2. About me
• My name is Maddy Thompson and I am currently
attending South Downs College, studying
Multimedia Journalism.
• My favourite lessons at college are Digital
Communications, Photography and Factual
Writing.
• I enjoy writing creatively – I once had a story I
wrote published in a book!
3. After college
After college, I’m hoping to get a job in the
media industry (or an apprenticeship) with
possibly some work experience to my
name to better my chances. I am still
keeping my options open for University
however so that is still a possibility.
I’d want to do something that involves a lot
of writing such as a column writer or
involvement with a magazine or
newspaper.
I’m still unsure of what I hope to achieve as
a full time job however I’m hoping it will be
successful in the media industry.
Possible Universities
-Portsmouth University
-Bournemouth University
-Southampton University
-University of Brighton
4. Work experience
I haven’t yet managed to get any work
experience but I’m still trying – I recently sent a
letter to Portsmouth News and am hoping for a
reply at some point, whether that would be me
shadowing someone for the day or trying out
some of the work. I also need to ask other local
places such as Hampshire Chronicle.
6. University
When you go for university interviews, you’re
expected to show some of your work (or a
portfolio) and that typically means you’ve had to
use research to produce that.
7. Importance of research
• Research can either be primary or secondary – Primary
research is original research carried out which could be
interviews or questionnaires, and secondary research
makes use of information previously researched (could
have been for other purposes).
• For example, for my magazine assignment I used
primary research by creating a survey on Survey
monkey for people to answer. It allowed me to ask
specific questions that I needed and to collect relevant
information, making it important for the final piece.
8. Online portfolio
- My online portfolio includes some of my work
and examples of what I’ve done in college. It’s
good to have a collection as it shows all of
your work in one place and allows people to
see your skills/what kind of person you are.
- For example, here is a page from my portfolio:

10. Social Networking
I have created several social networking accounts,
however here are a couple I have been active on:
I have tried connecting with people on LinkedIn and
following on Twitter that are relevant to what I’m
doing – this will make sure that the feed is relevant
to me and gives me a possibility to get contacts.
11. The colours of the
magazine all flow together
and are suited to the
target audience of young
teenaged girls – however
it is slightly more
sophisticated so is more
likely going to appeal to
them.
12. Target audience profile for magazine
• Jessica, aged 17
• Shops at places such as Topshop or Urban
Outfitters
• Listen to artists such as Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith
and Adele
• Enjoys reading about fashion/music/lifestyle
• Enjoys travelling around
13. What went well/could be better
I feel my magazine effectively suits the target
audience because of the use of colour, content
and layout. I however feel that my photography
on the double page spread could have been a
little bit better by taking more time to perfect
the photos.
14. Photography
• My online portfolio includes some of my
photography work and my blog does too.
