The student created a magazine targeted at 15-19 year old females. They used conventions like consistent cover lines and page numbers to organize the magazine. Photoshop was used to edit images and create a cohesive color theme. Feedback was gathered from the target audience to design the magazine for their interests, which included fashion, music, and celebrity news. Both print and digital versions were considered to appeal to modern audiences. Overall, the student felt they improved in laying out the magazine and understanding their target based on this project.
2. I believe my magazine has been filled with quite a lot of conventions running through it.
One of the ways to show this is the vast majority of cover lines I have used throughout
the magazine and showing continuity by putting the main headline/selling point on all
four pages of the magazine to show a consistent pattern, the cover lines are also
relatable to the target audience mostly having content of fashion or female artist which
young teenage girls may look up too. Professional and well established magazines
such as NME and Q direct their cover lines to the target audience that they are trying to
sell it too, if this is not portrayed properly in the magazine a target audience will not be
interested.
The cover lines are matched with the black highlight used on them (Photoshop effects)
to the colour theme of my magazine to show consistency again.
Another convention i have used on all of the pages of my magazine is the numbers on
the bottom left side of the magazine this is to help co ordinate pages to the target
audience and make it clearer for them to find things just like on published magazines.
Barcode, prices, issue number is another convention most magazines use on the front
cover page of magazines this helps the target audience know what they are looking to
pay and how far in the issue they are at.
A convention that I developed quite thoroughly was my slogan, I brainstormed many
ideas so that i could get one that would suit the nature of my magazine with all the
different genres it has and I'm quite pleased i came up with ‘The Best of Music Variety’
with the logo it matches quite well and looks professional at the same time. The logo
also took a long time to create but experience in Photoshop helped face that obstacle
quite fast and to a good standard.
3. The media in today's society represents young teenagers to be quite criminalised,
immature, irresponsible and especially teenage girls (my target audience) to get
pregnant a lot and not take responsibility of their own actions. However my
professional approach to the music magazine shows a different side to how young
teenage girls may be portrayed, even when they are starting to become a lot more
mature through teenage years. My music genre of pop is seen to be listened to many
young teens to represent the feeling that they are feeling at the time. The way I have
given a fashion element to the magazine also shows an mature approach to girls,
rather caring about drinking/sleeping around being immature they are starting to care
about their appearance and the way they are dressed. One way is the way I have
taken different shots in photography young teenage girls looking at this may wish to
look like the model and be more interested in fashion.
My Magazine represents: Maturity, emotion and a lot of fashion. Emotion because of
the way I have come up with my double page spread interview, giving it a personal
approach so young girls can relate to it and feel like someone is there for them.
Maturity by the way that the magazine has been laid out in a professional grown up
manner. Young teenage girls would not have a lot money to spend to buy magazines
so I tried to fit around the price of my magazine around their best fit, they may have to
use their money on stationary for college or fashion and I had to bear in mind how
frequently the magazine would be published as a teen life is busy, knowing that from
my own experience.
4. My Target audience is appealed to 15- 19 females, the stage from
transforming to a child’s mind to maturity:
My target audience would most likely would:
Go to college/school
Enjoy socialising with their friends
Keep up to date with latest trends
Shop at top shop/ Dorothy Perkins
Spend weekly shopping on fashion
Spend most of their time doing college work or going out with friends
Live with parents
Go through a hard stressful time in their life
Get a lot more responsibilities
Quite mature, understanding
Quite girly, like make up dressing up nice... Take care of their
appearance
Like gossip, celeb news
5. Media Institution is used for advertising, distribution, entertainment and
information purposes.
I believe that the way my magazine would be advertised somewhere
closely to where my target audience may be located such as colleges,
libraries, clothes stores etc or even bus stops.
The institution I believe it will fit in most well with would be a
independent organization who deals with fashion along side music and
celeb culture, I think if all of these work well together then it would
maximise the potential in my magazine by giving the right information to
the audience.
6. The demographic for my target audience would be:
Female,
All Races
15 – 19
Well established house
Working Class
British
All religions
Psychographics Include:
Strivers
Determined
Single
Interests – Politics
7. One of the ways I tried to attract my audience was to sharpen
my models eyes on Photoshop to make it stand out and look
directly into their eyes ‘direct address’ this is quite effective
because the model is very pretty and my target audience
would want to be as beautiful as my model. I have also used a
young music artist (model) for the front page and the double
page article to show some relation to young girls. I have also
added a cover line of the famous star and inspirational pop
star swift who most girls idolise.
8. Technology and programs was a big part of the creation of my
magazine. Thinking to myself if i was to hand make the magazine
would look so unprofessional and would be very productive to my
target audience. The use of Photoshop has helped me a lot in making
my images change drastically, the amazing tools that it has and the
effects that it is capable of. One thing i did come across which ticked
my mind was the use of E-Readers and Print to decide which one
would actually be best for my target audience. I should have created a
questionnaire to let me know what my target audience think. However
there is benefits to both, E – Readers can save costs and cut down on
pollution/ save time and Print can be a lot easier to read, more
accessible and more comfortable to read. But i have to take account
into the modern times, most things are becoming digital such as
appointments, ordering, technology is a huge part in today's society.
So i believe I should have both print and digital available to my target
audience.
9. Looking back at my magazine I think i have done a good job to maximise my
target audiences need and produce something to a good standard. My
experience and knowledge in Photoshop and even Microsoft publisher has gone
sky high i know how to use them and get the best out of them to create
something. I have also came to found out how different shots in photography can
portray something different and have a different effect in how the magazine is
portrayed and sends a message. I’ve also discovered the great use of website
DaFont for crazy and creative fonts, which was quite good as it gave me a wide
range of options to choose from.. I believe from my preliminary college magazine
task, i have advanced quite a lot in the way i have laud out the magazine to the
colour theme and to meeting my target audiences needs. My preliminary task i
believe was quite kiddyish and rushed, i didn’t spent a lot of time to see what my
target audience may want for the magazine. Also with photography i had the
chance to use different lenses for the music magazine than the preliminary task
one to get a whole different outlook to the magazine. I now have a better
understanding in how to create a music magazine or any magazine in this case
and know how to approach my target audience getting the best information out of
them possible to direct my magazine to them. If i was to do this task again i
probably would spend more time doing drafts and using more pictures for my
magazine so i can have a wide variety of options to choose from. Also experiment
a lot more with fonts and maybe different Photoshop brushes?
