This poster advertises Sunderland College to attract new students. It features a photo of a student in the college library to portray a positive student experience. It includes the college logo, contact information, and a call to action to apply by a certain deadline. While the lighting and text placement could be improved, overall it effectively markets the college to its target audience of school leavers and young adults. The student reflected on the process of creating the poster, what elements worked well to meet the brief, and aspects that could be strengthened in future projects.
1. Market Research for Media
This is a group of informational pamphlets/booklets which
contain information about Erasmus+ and the booklets each go
over a portion of information you may need regarding Erasmus as
a whole. It includes separate pamphlets for different ages
regarding education, like how there is one for the youth and what
they offer to them and adults, as there will be different
information for the two age groups and the youth one may include
information for parents or guardians.
What I like about this is how professionalit looks in terms to
what the product is for. The design actually looks like it would be
something for a school/college/general educational
company/course. The colours aren’t too bold however they also
aren’t dull to the point where it wouldn’t catch someone’s eye,
The editing is also done well as they found a way to actually incorporate the people included in the course
to the front cover to make it more if anything believable to those who would be reading the pamphlets.
If I’m being honest, I can’t say I have anything I dislike about these pamphlets/booklets as they look well
done and I would read one, had I had the chance and I was interested in Erasmus+.
If I were to think of this when creating my own work then I would like to take the colour scheme from it
possibly as they all work together in a way that attracts the eye. I may also use a similar font because the
way it stands on the page isn’t too outlandish and, in your face, however it also isn’t too dull to the point
where you wouldn’t want to use any of it. Overall, I would want to use this as an inspiration if anything as
I feel like this would be a good place to come for inspirations and ideas in every aspect.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is an advert for the state university of Arkansas regarding the scholarships and the
deadlines for admissions. It had the date of the final day of admissions, the logo of the
university, a contact number and their name and which social media platforms they’re
on.
If I’m being honest, I cannot find a single thing I like in this poster except maybe that
they have included their contact information because that would be usefulfor those who
need to put in their admissions documents.
I have many, many things that I personally find bad about this poster but to start off with I will start with
the font they used for the words “scholarship deadline.” The font they used honestly doesn’t fit into the
poster at all when you look at it in the context that this is a university advert. It honestly makes the advert
look cheap and quickly done by a student. It looks childish when you look at it and realise that this is a
university advert which has a font that clears out the middle of its letters, it doesn’t fit in at all with this.
Next, I would like to mention that they have used fur as a background of the poster which I think is
completely inappropriate for a university poster, especially given that this is supposed to be targeted to
young adults and up. They instead should have used maybe a plain background of any colour; they could
have even sued a plain black matte background to replace the furry background that they for some reason
decided to use. Another thing is that yes, they have included their contact information however it is in such
a small font compared to the rest and it doesn’t even include an email however it instead has a number and
a website. Overall, I find this poster to be unfit given that it is supposed to be for a university.
I’m being honest, I would not take much from this poster except from the fact I would also include the
college’s logo and then I would also include the colleges social media like they have on their poster as I
feel some images from the college’s social media may attract young adults/schoolleavers more than a
pamphlet given their age.
2. This is a poster advertising Berkshire University; I assume to make people want
to enrol to the university or at least begin to think about enrolling into Berkshire
University. The poster includes a large piece of text and it’s obvious that they are
trying to gather applicants for their University.
What I like about this poster is that they have included images of their students in
their poster as, just like past posters, I think It adds a hint of persuasiveness to
posters as seeing students who look happy in advertisements for a university, I’m
interested in makes me feel like I, myself, would be happy at that University.
Another think I like about this poster is that they have used soft colours in their
poster as if the colours were too bold and bright. It wouldn’t attract me to the
poster as I find it unprofessional for a professional establishment such as
Berkshire University. I also like how they have included links to look into
applying to the university unlike other posters. I have covered/seen.
What I don’t like about the poster is how little text there actually is on the poster about the university, it
adds a slogan to attract me and it tells us clearly that they are accepting applicants however they don’t
include a phone number or even an address if I wanted to go and look at the university myself, I don’t
think that someone should have to look up information such as this.
What I would use about the poster in my own work is probably the idea of using softer colours compared
to bright, in your face colours. I find it deterring when a so-called professional establishment had bright,
unneeded colours on their posters. Colleges and Universities are for young adults, not children so it doesn’t
make sense to me.

I had tried out this plan however I ended up not doing this as I found that it just didn’t end up fitting the
idea I had in my head and I ended up coming up with an idea that made me happier than the idea above.
This idea was supposed to be a pamphlet that would include a lot of information to include entice people
into coming to Sunderland College however after thinking about it I came to the decision that taking the
target audience into account, I decided doing something more simplistic would instead appeal to those I
wanted the advertisement to appeal to. I wanted this poster to come across as being for young adults and to
me, a young adult, blocky text and dull colours don’t catch my attention at all and wouldn’t persuade me to
apply to Bede like I did.
I also changed my original plan because I began to do my own market research on what other colleges and
universities did to appeal to people my age and I realised that my own idea didn’t fit at all into the
consecutive ideas that all the posters shared, at least the ones that I found interesting. This then persuaded
me to change into my idea into a poster with little information on it, I knew this would appeal to school
leavers/Young adults and to be fair I enjoyed making it a lot more than I did when I was making or even
planning the poster.
My peers also have given me feedback and told me that the original plan of the pamphlet would not
interest them if they had a choice between a poster and a pamphlet which I took into mind during the re-
planning phase. Not to say I don’t agree with them but I took this with the mindset that they were part of
my target audience and that me, as the provider should take their opinions and advice as something I
should apply to my own work.
4. My Evaluation of my work:
How I met the brief:
I feel that the piece of work I produced fits the brief we were given quite well, as the brief we were given
is that we were to make a piece of advertising to advertise the college, so that we attract some new people
to apply to the college. I myself, produced a poster to advertise the college with the idea of what would
have attracted me to the college had I seen it. My original idea wouldn’t have fit the brief in my opinion, as
it would have been a pamphlet about the courses the college offers, and the idea barely attratced me
nevermind all others my age interested in the college.
My Target Audience for this piece of work and how to appeal to them:
My target audience for this piece of work would be schoolleavers, teenagers ages 15-17 who weren't
previously in education or people over the age of 18 who are planning on attending college. However, this
specific poster that I’m making, in my opinion, appeals more towards teenagers rather than the adults who
are seeking education. I find this to be because I myself am within the age range of schoolleavers and
therefore my work is made in the mindset that it appeals to me, a seventeen-year-old, instead of appealing
to the older generation.
Given the chance that I would be making more pieces advertising the college, I have a few ways I would
attempt to appeal to those who may be interested in applying to college. One of these ways would be to
focus on the discounts that come with being a student, because in my own time being a student, I've found
that many of the students enjoy the perks/discounts that come with being a college student very much. I've
even found that to some people find the perks of being a college student to be persuasive towards their
decision making on which they would attend. Take Bede as an example, unlike other colleges Bede
campus has its own gym, a Starbucks, access to many computers all over campus and a refectory that you
are able to go to for hours out of the day to get both cold and hot food along with many kinds of drinks. It’s
also around places that are fun to go to during the breaks we sometimes have during classes such as the
park right next to campus. Another way I think that we could appeal to schoolleavers is through the use of
social media. If the college has an active social media which is updating people who are interested in what
happens throughout the year such as trips and visits to and from universities throughout the country. A
potential way to persuade people to apply to colleges could also be by attempting to influence parents as
when it comes down to it, children will take their parents opinion and keep it in the back of their mind
when thinking about where they want to apply to. Finally, a way I think that we could appeal to potential
students would to be advertise the college using the people who have left and went on to go to great
universities or get good jobs, because it shows that the college obviously can help people towards getting a
good life, however they define “a good life” that is.
How I followed the appropriate codes and conventions:
Use of camera – To be fair my poster didn’t take much in terms of using a camera however I used a
camera to do a photoshoot of different facilities around the college, and with my prior knowledge of
cameras it didn’t take much time, however I took photos at differnet angles and used different options on
the camera to attempt to take shots of the facilities that all had different aspects to them. I also tried a video
and it came out nothing like I wanted it to so I immediately shut down that idea from my list of possible
products.
5. Setting – My choice of photo, I feel, is very fitting for the product I made for the college. I feel this
because of the fact that the photo is set in the library of the college, and it also includes my fellow students
which I feel is a very persuasive element of the image. After hearing from my classmates too, I feel that
they too agree that the setting is extremely fitting for the product I was asked to make.
Editing/Lighting/Colours - Although there isnt as much editing as there could have potentially been, I
think that the things I did edit came out better than I had expected them too after taking a few years off of
photoshop and having to reintroduce myslef to all of the tools again however I hope in future products that
the standards of what is good and what isnt uses the editing on this as the lower end of the spectrum. To be
honest I feel that the editing cuased the lighting to look less professional than I possible could have made it
look however I feel with more experience I can make this no longer a problem when it comes to my work
on future products. I feel that the colours are fitting enough for the product given that I didn’t have many
options for the colours, seeing as the image is based in the college library, something I have no power over
the interior of.
Visual composition (Layout) - I feel that after some editing the layout of the poster is fairly good compared
to what it could have been. None of the text or images block the visiual centre of the poster which is the
image of my fellow student and instead it is in the corner at the top of the page where it isnt an intrusion
but is also easy to see and eyecatching to the viewer. I also feel that putting the student in the centre of the
image was a good idea on my part as its more visually pleasing than if she were off the the side randomly.
Text - For the text on my poster I used that specific one as I felt that It paired well with the text the college
uses on their logo and their slogan, it took me a short while of sorting through the various texts available to
settle on this one however after all my searching this was the only one I felt paired extremely well with the
one the school uses whilst also not being the exact same font. I wanted to use the same at first but instead
added a little diversity into my fonts.
6. The process of making my poster:
I started off this poster by doing a photoshoot of facilities around the college such as the refectory and the
library, ect. I then made a contact sheet in photoshop with these images to make it easier to look at when
making choices.
Then I decided to use a photo of my fellow student in the library as I felt it was fitting towars the theme I
was going for, which was basically just the students at the college as to me, I find it persuasive seeing
students from the college, as if others are enjoying it, seeing them do so makes me feel like I will also
enjoy it.
Then I messed around cropping the photo until I also messed colours until I found something I was
satisfied with, which took me a while because Im indecisive, regardless:
7. After this I added the College Logo and some other details that were required, such as the address of the
college and contact information such as the college website and number, because it being a poster for
admissions, I figured people would want details for the actual college.
With advice from Emma, I then began to include small details such small. snappy pieces of text which
made it clear that the poster was about college admissions then in a fun, small circle I included the date
that admissions started for late comers as I felt it added a small flair to the poster that other posters
advertising things/colleges. Then Boom! I was done!
Finished Product:
8. Concluding thoughts:
What I feel went well with this piece of work is a variety of things. One example is the image I used in my
poster to promote the college. I feel that the image fits into the poster well because of its setting which is
the library located on campus and not only that but it also includes a student attending the college too,
which makes the image even more persuasive I feel, as seeing people my age on a poster promoting a
college would attract me more than if it were an image of an adult student or a random lecturer. Another
example is that I have included the vital information for the college on the poster as well as the colleges
logo. The way ive included the colleges information is good because it gives people many ways to find out
information about the college that they could be interested in, or it even gives them the ability to go on a
tour of the college campus, both virtually and in person. A final way I feel I did well with my poster is the
way I have included a small, snappy piece of text in a small shape, which I felt was more fitting for a
poster that is aimed towards school leavers or teenagers in general as a large chunk of text doesn’t
particularly appeal to the younger generations.
What I feel I could have done better is a few small things. One of these things is the lighting on the image
that I used. After I edited the image I improved the lighting in my opinion howver something about it still
feels a bit off to me, however after editing it in different ways I cant say I came out with anything I liked
more than what I used. However I feel with more experience this issue will no longer be a problem in the
future. Another small issue I have is that the text always feels slighly out of place, especially the “VPA -
Art and Media” however after consideration I feel that leaving it where it is still feels better than the few
places I moved it to on the image. The “ Potential to be Amazing” is also slightly out of place however not
9. enough that I feel it would impact people opinion on my piece of work. Another thing I would keep in
mind for my next piece of work for the college is to make the colleges details slightly larger as after
looking at my finished product on a different computer than the macs at schoolI feel the text is too small
and people may stuggle to read it.
However, after taking all of this into consideration I am still happy with my piece of work as I feel that it is
a good piece of work for my very first piece of work at the college. My skills on different applications
definitely need to be improved for future projects however given what I know now as a new student, my
work is well done and reflects what I am able to do well enough. I feel that for future products I should try
making different types of work, such as a video or a podcast or something as I feel that if I work on a
broad amount of things it would benefit me when it comes to the end of my course.
