1. Kickstarter
What is kickstarter and how
does it work?
Kickstarter is a site which funds
everything from films, games, and
music to art, design, and
technology. The site is full of
projects, which the audience can
support and fund.
Which area does it focus on? This site focuses on production as
the viewers of this site can green lit
the projects which get them to the
finished product. However it can be
seen as a combination of also
distribution as kickstarter is a way
of advertising their project.
When was the site launched? The site was launched in 2009,
and has already had 7.9 Million
people altogether pledge more
than $1.5 Billion, funding 78,000
projects, with thousands of creative
projects are raising funds right now
on Kickstarter.
Who owns it? Kickstarter has no parent company
as it is an independent based site,
however its founders are: Perry
Chen, Yancey Strickler, Charles
Adler.
How can we assess the site? They have an app and a website
How has it devolved?
The site was first launched in April 28 2009.
In October 31, 2012, Kickstarter opened up to projects based in
the United Kingdom,
Then followed by projects based in Canada on September 9, 2013,
2. Australia and New Zealand on November 13, 2013
And then Denmark, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden on September
15, 2014.
This site has been allowed to evolve and branch out to other countries
because of its growing audience of supporters, who pledged loads of
money to different projects. Whereas in the past this site would only be
available to American projects, as shown the site has been able to
branch out.
What impact has it had on the music industry?
This has had a positive effect on the prosumers of this site as this
platform as given artists the chance to showcase their work and get
funding for their music as a record label might have rejected them. From
the site they cane fund tours, recordings and even sell CDs of their
songs. This site also gives them the chance to create a fan base of loyal
supporters who might help them again.
With this being said it could have negative impacts on both the artists
and record labels. For the record label if people are looking for new
ways of selling their music, or audiences are looking for new unsigned
artists this means that the record label are making less money than they
could be. However it could be argued that this site attracts the niche
market that the record label can’t tap into, that if the artist became signed
they might lose that underdog quality that people liked them for in the
first place, this is how the kickstarter program could be a negative thing
for the artist.
Predictions for the future developments:
The site would wish to expand their range of how many countries can
get their projects funded, and add more genres and niche projects.
