4. Definition of key terms
• Serif / Sans serif is a small decorative line
added as embellishment to the basic form of a
character. Typefaces are often described as
being serif or sans serif.
6. Definition of drop cap
• A large initial letter which drops below the
first line of a paragraph, its usually used at the
beginning of a book or section.
8. Kerning
• Kerning is the process of adjusting the spacing
between two characters in a font,
• Usually to give the font an overall more
aesthetically pleasing look.
9. Tracking
• Tracking, or Letter-Spacing, is a consistent
increase, or decrease, of space between
letters.
10. • Tracking is the spacing between a whole word
or block of text,
• Whereas Kerning is just for an individual pair
of letters, rather than a whole word.
11. Bleed
• Bleed is a term for printing that goes beyond
the sheet, to be trimmed off. Or in the case of
a double page spread; an image that goes
beyond the one page and on to the next.

of just one. This is a result of bleeding.
13. Drop Cap
• In written or published work; A drop cap, or
initial, is a letter at the beginning of a word or
paragraph that is larger than the rest of the
text.
