The And Incarceration Of The American Prison System
The American prison finds its origin in Europe. Like most things American we have adopted and
adapted many of our beliefs and customs from our mother land. The punishment of confinement was
rare and unheard of in America before Eighteenth century. The English concept of prison and
incarceration did not even take root until the late Eighteenth Century (Hirsch, 1992). Now,
American's cannot claim that they invented prisons or the concept of confining criminal offenders
within facilities that keep them separate from society. However, they can accredit themselves with
championing the concept of prison reformation. Much like its English counterpart the early
American prison system, which would one day grow to be an integral part of the expansive
American Criminal Justice System, had an ugly and brutal start. Confinement conditions for
Prisoners were harsh and unrelenting. Most Facilities designed to house criminal offenders were
over populated, under staffed, and lacked necessary resources to support their growing population of
inmates (Clear & Cole, 2003). However, over the years, America has made many strives to correct
the errors of their predecessors. This paper will detail the early American Prison System and its
journey through reformation to become the modern Prison system that we know today.
Early American Jails and Work Houses The first people to colonize America were not only settlers,
but convicts (Hirsch, 1992). During the beginning of the seventeenth century

An organisation's innovative capacity is influenced by its ability to mobilise knowledge,
technological skills and experience to create novelty in their product offerings, processes and
services (Gassmann, 2006; IBM Global Business Services, 2006). Knowledge is the basis of
innovation. However, the advantages associated with gaining an innovatory lead will be eroded over
time. The question is not one of whether or not to innovate, but
¨
rather how to do so successfully and continuously (Droge et al., 1994; McEvily and
Chakravarthy, 2002; Nonaka et al., 2003; IBM Global Business Services, 2006).
There is increasing recognition that an R&D centric strategy may not be enough to maintain an
innovation driven strategic advantage. To maintain an overall competitive edge the developed
economies must build their futures on knowledge combined with technology and innovation
(Chesbrough, 2005; Chesbrough et al., 2006; Miozzo and
Walsh, 2006; Ichijo and Nonaka, 2007). A knowledge advantage promotes success by ensuring that
emerging ideas, innovations and new products and services reach the market place (Tidd and Hull,
2003; Karmarkar, 2004). R&D must underpin knowledge creation and exploitation. This is
especially so in leading edge manufacturing enterprises such as the case company Honda. However,
it does not secure, on its own, economic well–being and

A Research Study On Business Schools
Leveraging research to enhance undergraduate business education
Luke Maass
Northwest Missouri State University
Student involvement in research activities in U.S. business schools used to be primarily offered to
graduate students. However, many universities are now offering undergraduate research
opportunities that can provide students with a deep understanding of the academic environment.
Research allows the exploration and questioning of significant issues in today's world.
This type of learning can provide students with more understanding than can be taught in a
classroom or read in a textbook. Research challenges students to engage in the process of identifying
and evaluating major issues and trends impacting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many examples of where this is already being implemented. MIT's business school has an
application for their Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). This program has
students involved in many different research topics such as the competition in telecommunications,
the impact of direct foreign investment on developing economies, and effects of taxes on corporate
decisions. Through these types of research they can connect what is learned in the classroom with
real business challenges. Perhaps making them a bit closer to the "real world" (Lewis). Teachers are
modifying their traditional ways of textbook teaching in the classroom to make available the ability
for students to develop and research their ideas and or topics. This can be summarized with 3 key
features. The first is context. Learning is efficient when the student has an interest in the topic. It
may be their background or culture that help them determine their subject of research. For example
a student studying International Business may choose a topic like 'business technology growth in
India'. Next is the nature of the student. The student researches and filters information. They actively
form and articulate their

Essay on Suspense of Stephen King
Stephen King a very popular story writer is most famous for his horror fiction stories. He has written
many books that have inspired other writers to write and other people to read more. He has made
many accomplishments that a lot of writers have never achieved. According to his biography, King
has sold fifty bestsellers, and has acted in a few movies that are based on his books. The use of
Suspense as a literary element is constant in books written by Stephen King. This will examine
Stephen King's life and the literary criticism of his short story, "The Two Dead Girls" The Green
Mile. In his works he blends elements of the traditional gothic, depressing and threatening tales with
those of the modern psychological suspenseful fiction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Green Mile, "The Two Dead Girls" is a very recognized work of Stephen King's. The book
series itself was so high–quality that it has also been produced as a movie. This dynamic anecdote is
about two girls who are raped and murdered. A man by the name of John Coffey committed the
dreadful crime. After his trial, Coffey is sentenced to death in the electric chair, which in the book
they called "Old Sparky," that is located in the state penitentiary at Cold Mountain. Paul Edgecombe
and Percy Wetmore, the guards watch over the men and women that die in the chair. Throughout the
book, the reader is lead to debate whether or not John Coffey is a devil in human form or a different
kind of being. Chapter 1 is part of the book which analyzes the thesis. In chapter 1 the author is
describing to the reader what the penitentiary looked and felt like. Another significant detail in this
part of the book is that King explains and describes the Green Mile. The last steps before a prisoner
sits in the electric chair to be killed are normally called the last mile. In this particular penitentiary,
the path to the chair was floored with tile. The planks on the floor had a lime green color to it, and
that is why they called it the green mile (King Pg 85). King describes the distance for the person that
had the bad fortune to walk it being a miserable long pace. The author also says that the look on the

Ethical and Other Legal Issues in the Workplace
Legal Analysis 10 Introduction Many reports and lawsuits have been registered related to ethical and
other legal issues in the workplace. Sexual harassment is one of the most registered lawsuits in the
courts over the past several years. The news of this ethical issue is common in multi–national
companies, political institutes, schools and colleges as well as military institutes. Because of this,
many bright professionals have lost their careers; a huge amount of cash has been paid in legal
settlements; there have been many devastated families; and the court has been compelled on
numerous occasions to make changes in legislation related to this issue. However, everything has
been changed with the new legislation. Now, there are certain aspects or laws that might not be
acceptable, which were accepted ten years ago (Marshall, 2005). Now, in this 21st century, our
workplace environment has changed drastically. With the passage of time, the number of working
women and working minorities in the society has been increased dramatically. No doubt, new
workplace legislation has succeeded to give confidence to the minorities to play their roles in the
economic activity. Now, it is very easy for everyone to work together with harmony and confidence.
Cultural and racial diversity is common in our workplace. The behavior of people towards accepting
this diversity is also very encouraging. Society is more educated and thinks that the cast, color or
culture of a person in the

The Problem Solving And Decision Making Process
There are many problem–solving and decision–making processes employed by many consultants all
over the world in coming up with decisions of renting or buying house. We all make decisions of
varying importance every day, so the idea that decision–making be a rather complicated task may at
first seem strange. However, in reality, some people are much poorer at decision–making than they
think (Thomas & Maurice, 2008). Making a decision implies that there is more than one choice to
be considered. More importantly, he or she should select the option that has the highest probability
of success or effectiveness as well as best fits with his goals, desires, lifestyle, or values. No
business process, such as buying or renting, can be approached by structuring of all the tasks that
need to be done in order for this process to work (Malthus, 1826). When making the decision either
to rent or buy a place to live, financial factors must be considered. The first step in the decision
making process is to determine whether or not the individual can afford to purchase a home. These
costs substantially exceed the initial payment and security deposit that would be required if a person
were renting instead of buying (Walsh, 2007). Before deciding to buy a home, the amount of
monthly payments against the income should be considered. Homeowners insurance and property
tax expenditures also should be taken in consideration. Expenses on home maintenance such as
carpet or a new roof also should be

Effects of Rap Music on Crime
Listening to Rap: Cultures of Crime, Cultures of Resistance
Julian Tanner, University of Toronto Mark Asbridge, Dalhousie University Scot Wortley, University
of Toronto
This research compares representations of rap music with the self–reported criminal behavior and
resistant attitudes of the music's core audience. Our database is a large sample of Toronto high
school students (n = 3,393) from which we identify a group of listeners, whose combination of
musical likes and dislikes distinguish them as rap univores. We then examine the relationship
between their cultural preference for rap music and involvement in a culture of crime and their
perceptions of social injustice and inequity. We find that the rap univores, also known as urban

In both the mainstream press (i.e., The New York Times) and publications targeting a predominately
black readership (i.e., Ebony and Jet), she finds rap lauded for the salutary lessons that it imparts to
black youth regarding the realities of urban living; likewise, rap artists are applauded for their
importance as role models and mentors to inner–city black youth. Thus, while rap has been framed
negatively, as a contributor to an array of social problems, crime and delinquency in particular, it has
also been celebrated and championed as an authentic expression of cultural resistance by underdogs
against racial exploitation and disadvantage. How these differing representations of rap might
resonate with audience members was not part of Binder's research mandate.2 Furthermore, while
she does acknowledge that journalistic perceptions of the racial composition of the rap audience are
not necessarily accurate – that more white suburban youth, even in the 1980s and 1990s, might have
been consuming the music than black inner–city youth – this acknowledgment does not alter her
enterprise or her argument. At this point in time, when the listening audience for rap music has both
expanded and become increasingly diverse, our research concerns how young black, white and
Asian rap fans in Toronto, Canada relate to a musical form still viewed primarily in terms

3.0 Causes of Stress
Stressors can be divided into those that arise from within an individual (internal), and those that are
attributable to the environment (external). Internal conflicts, non–specific fears, fears of inadequacy,
and guilt feelings are examples of stressors that do not depend on the environment. Internal sources
of stress can arise from an individual 's perceptions of an environmental threat, even if no such
danger actually exists. Environmental stressors are external conditions beyond an individual 's
control. Bhagat (1983) has reported that work performance can be seriously impaired by external
stressors. There are many aspects of organizational life that can become external stressors. These
include issues of structure, management 's use of authority, monotony, a lack of opportunity for
advancement, excessive responsibilities, ambiguous demands, value conflicts, and unrealistic
workloads. A person 's non–working life (e.g., family, friends, health, and financial situations) can
also contain stressors that negatively impact job performance. This can be summarized as follows. i.
Organizational factors– With the growth in organizational stress and

Supreme Court Decision-Making
Segal, Timpone and Howard's article 'Buyer Beware?' (2000) draws upon existing research into the
appointment of Supreme Court justices by seeking to empirically prove Robert Dahl's 1957 theory
that a justice's voting typically reflects the policy preferences of the president who appointed them,
thereby allowing presidents to achieve their policy goals even after leaving office (pp. 557–558).
The authors clarify this by stating that in the event of a clear correlation, concordance should not be
considered synonymous with responsiveness. Put simply, the research is not proposing that Supreme
Court justices are directly influenced by the decisions of the president who appoints them, but
merely that the president and appointee share the same political ... Show more content on

As Hulbary and Walker note in "The Supreme Court Selection Process" (1980), presidents may
consider a range of factors when selecting their desired justice, such as age, race, religion and the
likelihood of the nomination gaining the Senate's approval. Thus, it would be reductive to conclude
from Segal, Timpone and Howard's research that shared policy preferences are the primary goal of a
nominating president in all cases. The authors' rightfully acknowledge this by highlighting Dwight
Eisenhower's nomination of William J. Brennan, a justice far more liberal than his appointer who is
widely believed to have been chosen as a concession to northern liberals before the 1956 election
(pp. 569–570). A more recent example of this trend would be the 2016 nomination of Merrick
Garland to the Supreme Court by Barack Obama. While it is unlikely that the centrist Garland would
have been Obama's first choice to fill the vacant seat left by Antonin Scalia, he may now represent
the least–worst scenario, insofar as he stands a small chance of being approved by an obstructionist
Republican Senate. If this occurs, it would surely be treated as a victory by the current White House
administration. As such, it is important not to automatically conflate ideological differences between
president and justice with a "failed" appointment, a trap that the article occasionally falls into (p.

A Walk In The Clouds Review
In an era when harsh actuality of everyday life propels one to the realm of insanity, to a
pharmaceutically induced sleep, or to a dreadful state of existence, it is a pleasure for a fairytale
world to engulf an individual. Although for only a brief time of ninety minutes, that ninety minutes
is as refreshing as a relaxing soak in a warm tub of water. "A Walk in the Clouds" provides the
means of escape by way of a delightful romantic fantasy. At a time when movies seem compelled to
be asocial, when it is more effortless to smirk than to sigh, this film refreshingly takes us to a dream
world, if only for a time.Director Alfonso Arau brings sentiment to a story set in post–World War II

No sooner do they utter the final planning words than does the sound of shotgun fire sound. Her
father, Alberto Aragon (Giancarlo Giannini) meets and greets the new son–in–law with gun in hand.
He does not approve of a Gringo, and believe me, he makes it known throughout the film. That is,
until the end. Every other member of Victoria's family accepts Paul especially the patriarch of the

ever seen Quinn grace the screen.
Throughout "A Walk in the Clouds" he inserts his elderly wisdom and wit masterfully. One of the
most outstanding lines is when he tells Paul, who grew up in an orphanage, "You are an orphan no

and Sanchez–Gijon continually reaches an apex just before the kiss. Even after the harvesting of the
family's grape crop, and the ceremonial stomping of the grapes (this is a beautifully done scene of
detail and soft light), and at last, a loving kiss, Paul stops before the point of no return. He tells her

The Importance Of Private Speech
Question 4 (Language) The industrious classroom was bustling with children laughing, pretending,
communicating and a plethora of other activities. At this age they are engaging in private speech and
still in the process of developing their speech habits. Private speech is the act of children verbalizing
their thoughts in a sense as to guide their actions (Santrock, 2010). A child sitting by himself is
trying to mimic a pattern of colorful shapes on a piece of string. "Red, blue, green,.." he says out
loud as he places the respective shapes on the string. Private speech in this case would be him
saying each color aloud in order to guide the placement of each shape. Upon completion he smiles at
his creation then rushes to show it to the nearest adult. "Good job, Max!", the teacher exclaims to
him and asks him if can do another one for her. He says "Thank you.", and eagerly rushes back to
the shapes and empties his string ready to start anew. Finishing another pattern he rushes back to the
adult where he cheers because he is feeling happy that he did a great job on his pattern, the
instructor thought so as well. The young boy was very receptive in terms of the instructor's
comments. He knew that he had done a great job on his pattern when the teacher told him great job.
His reaction shows that he was able to understand that the teacher's statement was congratulatory
and a positive interaction, to which he responded with similar energy. Each of the work stations had

A Functional Service Economy Essay example
A Functional Service Economy
Green Business. Natural Capitalism. Eco–efficiency. An Eco–economy. These are terms used to
describe the desired (and often purely conceptual) transformation of the private sector, from one of
often flagrant resource use and disposal into a sustainable and ecologically concerned industry.
?The eco–efficiency imperative is based on the idea that companies must come to terms with the
new realities of population growth, increased evidence of global warming, ozone depletion, loss of
fertile soils and forests. These new realities will change the markets (customers' attitudes) and lead
to tougher government regulation. This will change the bottom–line of each company now and
increasingly in the future. Costs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
they want to use the products, or enjoy the service that it provides: ?What we want is transportation
from our car, cold beer from the refrigerator, and news or entertainment from our television?
(Hawken 1993). Businesses can use this concept as an approach to sustainability by selling a service
instead of a product.
The service industry answers the call of capitalism in that people are still purchasing and selling.
But the industry deviates from the traditional consumer–driven practices because the consumer only
uses the service of a product, but does not attain ownership of the product. This shift from product
consumption to the selling of service addresses and answers the challenge that human welfare is best
served by improving the quality and flow of desired services delivered, rather than by merely
increasing the total dollar flow?(Hawkins and Lovins 1999). The environmental benefit of an
industrial service economy lies in the fact that it is ?regenerative rather than depletive, one whose
products ?work within cradle to cradle lifecycles rather than cradle to grave cycles?? (Brown).
Services Instead of Products:
The potential environmental benefit of the service economy industrial model needs to be critically
investigated. We will introduce the logic behind the concept and offer economic arguments for and
against it, go over the legal issues of leasing and lending, and then critically look at two companies
which are trying to make the selling of service

Why Should Concealed Weapons Be Allowed In Schools

Concealed weapons should NOT be allowed in schools
Although people may say that school administration should be able to carry concealed weapons on
school campus for protection of themselves and their students, it is a very bad and dangerous
decision. Bringing concealed weapons into schools could cause many tragic things to happen such
as a child or teen to possibly pick up the weapon and harm themselves or others, having an
unintentional discharge occur in class and it could also cause an increase in violent behavior. So, no
administration has no business carrying concealed weapons to school for any reason. It's a bad idea
and would just cause heart ache and a lot of unneeded stress.

burglary, and larceny, according to an Aug. 2012 paper" (National Bureau of economic research).
With this being said the more availability for teenagers and young adults to get weapons the more
likely crime rates would increase. Not saying that every single teen or every single young adult who
gets or has a gun will turn into a criminal or participate in violent actions but, they are still
adolescent and will make mistakes. Especially if they are trying to fit in with a specific group of
people, they will pretty much do almost anything. They may steal, kill, injure, abuse, etcetera just to
be intertwined with those people. They could even steal the weapon from the administrator to use
for bad or give to someone else to use for bad. People are getting to be really persuasive especially
teenagers they get pulled in different directions every day. Even though we don't like admitting it
most of them are getting pulled in the wrong directions. Well bringing weapons into schools just
helps give them more of a reason to turn for the worst and do things that no person should do. These

Post modernists change from one philosophical position to another as they do not have a

Circle Of Friends Movie Analysis
Circle of Friends revolves around the lives and expectations of three young women, Benny, Eve, and
Nan, in 1950's Ireland. The girls were raised in the traditional Catholic faith in the small village of
Knockglen, Ireland with Nan moving to Dublin in her youth. They were taught to honor their
parents and shun any and all forms of sexuality. The three eventually meet again at university, where
they begin to challenge the traditional views that they have always taken as law. The movie
documents Benny, Nan, and Eve's desires to remain pure while also living lives that will bring them
happiness. The movie begins with Benny, Eve, and Nan taking their First Communion. The movie
then jumps forward to Benny and Eve leaving for their first day of college in Dublin, where they are
rejoined by Nan who had moved away earlier. There Benny meets Jack Foley, who she instantly
falls for. Her parents wish her to marry their business partner, Sean Walsh, but Benny is disgusted by
his unnerving advances and personality. Jack invites Benny to the university ball, where, after
dancing with other girls, he promises to not lead her on and kisses her. Each of the girls now has a
love interest: Benny with Jack, Eve with Aidan, and Nan with Simon Westward. Benny and Jack
each express their desire to have sex, but believe that premarital sex a sin. Benny rejects sex with
Jack, but Nan gives in to her desires and sleeps with Simon. After an argument with her family,

Long ago, there were monstrous creatures named Bog Noblins that are now supposed to be extinct.
However, Rye encountered a strange creature which looked like a Bog Noblin which convinced her
that they returned from Beyond the Shale, a forest. No one can protect the village – except an old,

This was a challenge because everyone despised the Luck Uglies and their crimes. Many people
thought it was not possible based on their crime record. It was also a challenge since Bog Noblins
were very dangerous. They could easily kill humans with their bare hands. For example, Rye almost
got killed by the monster, but she got squeezed by the throat instead. She did not die because
Harmless saved her from the monster. The theme of this book would be, "Sometimes things may not
seem how it really is." This is because the Luck Uglies, the so–called villains, protected the villagers
from the Bog Noblins, the monsters. Longchance had exiled the Luck Uglies from Village
Drowning because he thought they kidnapped Lady Longchance. The Luck Uglies hadn't done
anything wrong, but since they lived in Beyond the Shale, they were claimed guilty. Even after,
Longchance made the villagers hate the Luck Uglies, so that he would be valued more and treated

Correctional Facilities in The United States Essay
Throughout United States correctional history, it has been heavily debated as to whether or not
prisons have positive effects on inmates and society. Today, many prisons attempt to have a positive
impact on the lives of the inmates, while giving society the satisfaction on punishing criminals. The
correctional system achieves this goal through the use of four techniques. The four techniques used
by the correctional system include rehabilitation, deterrence, incapacitation, and retribution. These
four methods work individually as well as collectively to produce felons who can be productive
citizens of society. Firstly, one main, effective method used by correctional facilities today is
rehabilitation. Prisons aim of rehabilitation is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

inmate was quoted saying, "Please give me some education, or a trade, because I don't want to come
back to prison." (Cei) This show the positive effects of such programs will give this inmate a chance
to be productive in society. Correctional facilities use a wide range of programs to effectively
rehabilitate inmates. There are two categories for correctional programs, one category is habilitative
services, and the other is treatment programs. Habilitative services aim to teach inmates basic skills
needed for a productive life in society. These skills include education classes on reading and writing,
vocational training, religious programs, and life skill development. Education programs are the most
effective in prison because they help reduce recidivism by encouraging self–discipline, and
promoting a sense of investment that discourages criminality. Also, recidivism is reduced through
academic programs by increasing an offender's post release earnings and job security. (Quinn 249)
All federal prisons, and 91% of states prisons offer educational programs. This is significant because

Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser displaced Netscape's Navigator, in a turn of events that

The Night, The Side Of Paradise, And The Great Gatsby By...
F. Scott Fitzgerald, born in St. Paul, Minnesota, had many great works of the 1900's. He was a well–
educated man–earning his degree from Princeton University (Werlock). His parents, Edward and
Mary McQuillan Fitzgerald, were both Irish. The Side of Paradise was a major deciding factor by
the parents of Zelda Sayre of their marriage on April 3, 1920. Although many people adore his
works, Fitzgerald went through a time of Writer's Block and became a major alcoholic. Fitzgerald
died of a heart–attack on December 21, 1940 (Werlock). His most famous works are Tender is the
Night, The Side of Paradise, and The Great Gatsby.
F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (1925) is about a man, Nick Carraway, who is curious about
his neighbor–– a rich man named Jay Gatsby who is searching the love of his life, Daisy Buchanan.
The novel beings in West Egg, Long Island with Nick buying a new home, and is invited to a party
by Gatsby. Gatsby later learns that Daisy is Nick's cousin, therefore he later becomes good friends
with Nick to try to become closer to Daisy. After Daisy's husband finds out about Daisy and
Gatsby's affair, he confronts them, but Daisy decides that she loves Gatsby. Later, Daisy is driving
Gatsby's car and hit and murders a woman; the woman's husband figures out that the car was Jay
Gatsby's car and he murders Gatsby in his own home. F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (1925)

Moreover, the article relates this framework to other change frameworks that have been proposed by
various authors. Using a change situation in which two hotels under separate management were
merged or "complexed" to form a single operating entity under new ownership, we illustrate how
our model can be used to implement effective change. In particular, we explain the importance of
attending to each aspect of the change process, as well as demonstrating that the change has
achieved its purpose. We call our framework the "5–P model": purpose, priorities, people, process,
and proof. The change began in February 1998 when the Starwood Corporation bought the Westin
Hotels and Resorts Company, which managed the 758–room Swan Hotel and, shortly thereafter, the
Sheraton Hotel Corporation, which managed the 1,509–room Dolphin. Since the hotels are adjacent
to each other
and had been jointly marketed since 1996 by a marketing group organized by one of their joint
owners, Tishman Hotel and Realty Corporation, the logical next step was to seek a way to merge the
two hotels' management and operations. A complication associated with this merger was that each
hotel had its own specific history and way of doing things, as well as a distinct corporate culture.
The larger Dolphin's Sheraton culture and the smaller Swan's Westin culture were already
overshadowed by the omnipresent and dominant Disney culture. Nevertheless most

Wonder Woman And Harley Quinn
In the long legacy of DC comics there are two female archetypes who couldn 't be more different:
one is a paragon of virtue and one is a psychopath. One has an abusive relationship with an insane
criminal that defines her identity; the other encourages women and girls to fight for their
independence. One has decades of historical canon and an inception full of purpose; the other was
meant to be a one–off and a short amusement in a kids ' cartoon, but exploded into a phenomenon.
Despite their many differences, they are both beloved the world over. They hold constant interest for
fans over the years and, for many women, both mark milestones of feminism. To understand this
phenomenon more we will take a closer look at the characters of ... Show more content on

In a remarkable contrast, Harley Quinn was not conceived with so much planning and lofty
intentions. Her rise is a recent, completely unprecedented curve ball. She was only meant to be a
passing character in Batman: The Animated Series ,a mainstay of 90 's childhood. In a bizarre twist
of fate, and the right people knowing each other, Harley Quinn got her origin. The cartoon 's writer,
Paul Dini, watched a tape of his college buddy, comedy writer Arleen Sorkin, doing comedy bits in
Days of Our Lives as a weird court jester. The character's personality clicked with what Dini sought
for a girl in The Joker 's crew. As Abraham Riesman tells it, "When he saw Sorkin in clown makeup,
the pieces fell into place, and he came up with a silly little sidekick. He gave her the comic–book–y
name of Harley Quinn [...]". This odd turn of events even established Sorkin as the long–standing
voice actor for the new character. Despite their polar opposition , from their creation to how they act
within the comics, both women have to deal with their gendered reality as a part of their identity and
a big part of how the world interacts with them. Both handle their role as a woman with stark
contrast. Harley Quinn has no problem using her gender as sexual ammunition. It 's even part of her
origin story in Mad Love ,the Eisner–winning comic exploring her beginnings and relationship with
the Joker, Batman remarks that "even from the beginning Harley Quinn was no angel."

drastically. Shaving cream pies to the faces of players who got the game winning hit, and various

Economics: Good Choice of Major for Future CEOs
By Patricia M. Flynn and Michael A. Quinn* Abstract It is often suggested that Economics is a good
major for individuals interested in becoming business leaders. Despite this widespread assertion,
little research has been conducted on this topic. Using the Standard and Poor (S&P) 500 companies,

This process will provide an approach to making major decisions in your business future direction. I
think that the external audit can identify internal strengths and weaknesses and also, external threat.
By using the information that is gathered, you can establish long–term objectives and pursue the
correct strategies in your business. An external audit provides information on many different levels
in the business environment. Areas available for reviewing can be competitive activity, economic
conditions, social and cultural trends, demographic changes, political attitudes to business, and
regulatory changes. The outcome of an external audit can provide possible negative issues and
positive opportunities in the business environment. This could impact your decisions either way.
Certainly, new product development, market openings or closings, mergers and acquisitions, and
resource allocation will be valuable information. Ultimately it could impact the long–term decisions
made for the future success of the business.
Communication is a key factor in Crisis Management. Having an official individual designated to

Lance Quinn, God has call pastors to make disciples, which is seen in the Old Testament. He gives
Moses as an example of choosing experience men "how can I alone bear the load and burden of you
and your strife? Choose wise and discerning and experienced men from your tribes, and I will
appoint them as your heads" (Deut. 1:12–13). The qualities of the leaders had to reflect attributes of
God. These men had to have the ability to bring harmony even when great differences exists, and
had the ability of wisdom to penetrate the realities of life from God's perspective and to deal fairly
with all parties in a dispute. In the New Testament, the writer gives his example from a mandate
from Jesus: "And Jesus came up and spoke to then, saying, all authority has been given to Me in
heaven and on earth. God therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you
and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:18–20).
This shows the Great Commission that Jesus place on the disciples. Making disciples involves three
steps: going, baptizing, and teaching. It was assumed that when a person trusted in the Lord Jesus,
he or she would be baptized in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together. John MacArthur gives the
readers a chapter on frequently asked questions, which is a plus to the readers. Some of these
questions are as follows: To

The African Methodist Episcopal Church Essay examples
The African Methodist Episcopal Church also known as the AME Church, represents a long history
of people going from struggles to success, from embarrassment to pride, from slaves to free. It is my
intention to prove that the name African Methodist Episcopal represents equality and freedom to
worship God, no matter what color skin a person was blessed to be born with. The thesis is this:
While both Whites and Africans believed in the worship of God, whites believed in the oppression
of the Africans' freedom to serve God in their own way, blacks defended their own right to worship
by the development of their own church. According to Andrew White, a well– known author for the

ended slavery as a political institution. The discord of the war gave African–Americans in the South
freedom to worship among themselves. It was within this period that African–Americans, despite
contrary white opinion, developed and set up churches among themselves". In 1816, Richard Allen
founded the first African–American led church in the country, the African Methodist Episcopal
Church. The African Methodist Episcopal Church was the first major religious denomination in the
western world that originated because of sociological and not theological differences. It was the first
African–American denomination organized and incorporated in the US. The church was established
in what was known as the Blacksmith Shop Meeting House. "By 1786 blacks made up about 10
percent of the Methodist church in the United States, and though whites and blacks often worshiped
together, blacks enjoyed no real freedom or equality. Segregated seating was typical; the area
reserved for blacks was usually called the "Negro Pew" or the "African Corner."

Kurt Lewin and the Planned Approach to Change:
A Re–appraisal
Bernard Burnes
Manchester School of Management
 The work of Kurt Lewin dominated the theory and practice of change management
for over 40 years. However, in the past 20 years, Lewin's approach to change, particularly the 3–
Step model, has attracted major criticisms. The key ones are that his work: assumed organizations
operate in a stable state; was only suitable for small–scale change projects; ignored organizational
power and politics; and was top–down and management–driven. This article seeks to re–appraise
Lewin's work and challenge the validity of these views. It begins by describing Lewin's background

The article concludes by arguing that rather than being outdated, Lewin's Planned approach is still
very relevant to the needs of the modern world.
LEWIN'S BACKGROUND
Few social scientists can have received the level of praise and admiration that has been heaped upon
Kurt Lewin (Ash, 1992; Bargal et al., 1992; Dent and
Goldberg, 1999; Dickens and Watkins, 1999; Tobach, 1994). As Edgar Schein
(1988, p. 239) enthusiastically commented:
There is little question that the intellectual father of contemporary theories of applied behavioural
science, action research and planned change is Kurt Lewin.
His seminal work on leadership style and the experiments on planned change which took place in
World War II in an effort to change consumer behaviour launched a whole generation of research in
group dynamics and the implementation of change programs.
978 B. Burnes

resolution of social con– flict and, in particular, the problems of minority or disadvantaged groups.
Underpinning this preoccupation was a strong belief that only the permeation of democratic values
into all facets of society could prevent the worst extremes of social conflict. As his wife wrote in the
Preface to a volume of his collected work published after his death:
Kurt Lewin was so constantly and predominantly preoccupied with the task of advancing the

particular industry. Alternatively, the team might develop an entrepreneurial idea based on a new
technology.
The following reading provides a good background for thinking about how new technologies might
change organizations and ways in which things get done, so it is helpful to go over before the teams

A Research Study On Business Education
Running head: LEVERAGING RESEARCH TOENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE BUSINESS
EDUCATION 1
Leveraging research to enhance undergraduate business education
Luke Maass
Northwest Missouri State University
Authors note
This paper was prepared for
Student involvement in research activities in U.S. business schools used to be primarily offered to
graduate students. However, many universities are now offering undergraduate research
opportunities that can provide students with a deep understanding of the academic environment.
Research allows the exploration and questioning of significant issues in today's world.
This type of learning can provide students with more understanding than can be taught in a
classroom or read in a textbook. Research challenges students to engage in the process of identifying
and evaluating major issues and trends impacting businesses and society. Students also explore
potential business implications that can drive innovation (The Boyer Commission). One goal of
business school research is to enhance the prestige of the business school where the research is
done. There is evidence that research does achieve that goal, as "research has, historically, been
regarded as the primary determinant of a school 's prestige" (Armstrong, 1995: 103). For example,
Business Week magazine has added a research influence measure in its ratings of business schools.
If a school scores highly on that measure, it enhances the overall prestige ranking.

Kurt Lewin and complexity theories: back to the future?
Joumal of Change Management,
Vol. 4, No. 4, 309–325, December 2004
i" l Kurt Lewin and complexity theories: back to the future?
BERNARD BURNES
Manchester School of Management, University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology,
Manchester, UK
ABSTRACT Many writers acknowledge the significance of Kurt Lewin 's contribution to
organizational change. However, over the last 20 years, where the focus has been on rapid,
transformational change, Lewin 's work has increasingly become seen as outmoded and irrelevant to
the needs of modem organizations. It might be expected that this tendency would increase as
academics and practitioners draw on the work of complexity theorists to portray organizations as
complex, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many writers have argued that organizations are also complex systems which, to survive, need to
operate at the edge of chaos and have to respond continuously to changes in their environments
through just such a process of spontaneous self–organizing change (Lewis, 1994; Stickland, 1998;
Macintosh and MacLean, 1999, 2001; Hayles, 2000; Macbeth, 2002; Stacey, 2003).
This is a far cry from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, where the received wisdom was that change was
an incremental process (Quinn, 1980) and that the best way to manage this was through Kurt Lewin
's Planned approach to change (French and
Bell, 1990; Cummings and Worley, 2001). Given its group–based, consensual and relatively slow
nature. Planned change began to attract criticism in the 1980s from those questioning its
appropriateness in an era of radical organizational change
(Peters and Waterman, 1982; Wilson, 1992; Dawson, 1994; Buchanan and Storey,
1997; Hatch, 1997). The following quotation is perhaps typical of the criticisms levelled against
Lewin 's approach to change:
Lewin 's model was a simple one, with organizational change involving three stages; unfreezing,
changing and refreezing . . . This quaintly linear and

PQC/HH Community Business Analysis
As early as four years old, I have always felt a sense of responsibility to the community where I
lived. I remember reciting the names of different streets, schools, and notable businesses from the
backseat of my mother's Jeep in the miniature municipality of Muskegon Heights, Michigan. While
riding through the city, I witnessed the plague of our deprived community which lacked the
amenities of the neighboring towns we would travel to. When I moved across the United States not
only did I reside in another under–resourced community, I also learned this is a national epidemic
tearing apart cities throughout the country. Deciding to not just become an observer on this social
issue, I have honed my passion and thrust myself into fighting for economic ... Show more content

With that win came national attention and notable praise amongst the higher education community.
By the end of the 2011–2012 academic year, I accomplished feats I never imagined possible because
I understood the struggle local citizens endured in the Highland Hills community. It was my struggle
too. In April 2012, as I was wrapping up my year as Student Government Association President, the
HBCU Digest voted us the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Student Government
Association of the Year. I was also a runner–up for the HBCU Male Student of the Year, mainly for
leadership with the WE ARE NOT TRASH movement. The following month, Paul Quinn College
named me Student of the Year, an award I can only credit to the faculty, staff, and students for their
unwavering support. The Texas Association of Developing Colleges also honored me with a state
leadership award called, "a student growing from academia to global

Family Structure : Single Parent And Divorced
Single parent and divorced, shared–custody families have become more common place in American
society over the past fifty years. During the 1940s and 1950s, "85% of children lived in two–parent
families, 70% lived in an intact (biological or adoptive) two–parent family, and the remaining 15%
lived in two–parent stepfamilies..... however, since the 1970s, there has been a large increase in the
proportion of children living with never–married mothers (from 1.1% in 1970 to 6.7% in 1988) or
divorced mothers (from 3.5% in 1970 to 7.8% in 1988)" (Shiono and Quinn par. 2). Since there has
been an increase in divorced and never–married mothers taking care of families, there have been
countless studies done on how different family structures affect the children involved and the family
unit as a whole. I believe that the two biological parent family structure is the best for children and
society because it provides stability, allows for stable financial income, and also prevents role strain
for the parents. From a functionalist perspective, single parent and shared–custody families are seen
as unacceptable for society. Functionalists see the family as an important part of society, and all
parts must be functional to keep society balanced and running smoothly. When one part of the
society becomes dysfunctional, then the whole system breaks down. When the family unit, which is
a core part of society, breaks down there are numerous issues that can occur. The family becomes
dysfunctional

The And Incarceration Of The American Prison System

  • 1. The And Incarceration Of The American Prison System The American prison finds its origin in Europe. Like most things American we have adopted and adapted many of our beliefs and customs from our mother land. The punishment of confinement was rare and unheard of in America before Eighteenth century. The English concept of prison and incarceration did not even take root until the late Eighteenth Century (Hirsch, 1992). Now, American's cannot claim that they invented prisons or the concept of confining criminal offenders within facilities that keep them separate from society. However, they can accredit themselves with championing the concept of prison reformation. Much like its English counterpart the early American prison system, which would one day grow to be an integral part of the expansive American Criminal Justice System, had an ugly and brutal start. Confinement conditions for Prisoners were harsh and unrelenting. Most Facilities designed to house criminal offenders were over populated, under staffed, and lacked necessary resources to support their growing population of inmates (Clear & Cole, 2003). However, over the years, America has made many strives to correct the errors of their predecessors. This paper will detail the early American Prison System and its journey through reformation to become the modern Prison system that we know today. Early American Jails and Work Houses The first people to colonize America were not only settlers, but convicts (Hirsch, 1992). During the beginning of the seventeenth century ... An organisation's innovative capacity is influenced by its ability to mobilise knowledge, technological skills and experience to create novelty in their product offerings, processes and services (Gassmann, 2006; IBM Global Business Services, 2006). Knowledge is the basis of innovation. However, the advantages associated with gaining an innovatory lead will be eroded over time. The question is not one of whether or not to innovate, but ¨ rather how to do so successfully and continuously (Droge et al., 1994; McEvily and Chakravarthy, 2002; Nonaka et al., 2003; IBM Global Business Services, 2006). • 6. A Research Study On Business Schools Leveraging research to enhance undergraduate business education Luke Maass Northwest Missouri State University Student involvement in research activities in U.S. business schools used to be primarily offered to graduate students. However, many universities are now offering undergraduate research opportunities that can provide students with a deep understanding of the academic environment. Research allows the exploration and questioning of significant issues in today's world. This type of learning can provide students with more understanding than can be taught in a classroom or read in a textbook. Research challenges students to engage in the process of identifying and evaluating major issues and trends impacting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many examples of where this is already being implemented. MIT's business school has an application for their Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). This program has students involved in many different research topics such as the competition in telecommunications, the impact of direct foreign investment on developing economies, and effects of taxes on corporate decisions. Through these types of research they can connect what is learned in the classroom with real business challenges. Perhaps making them a bit closer to the "real world" (Lewis). Teachers are modifying their traditional ways of textbook teaching in the classroom to make available the ability for students to develop and research their ideas and or topics. This can be summarized with 3 key features. The first is context. Learning is efficient when the student has an interest in the topic. It may be their background or culture that help them determine their subject of research. For example a student studying International Business may choose a topic like 'business technology growth in India'. Next is the nature of the student. The student researches and filters information. He has written many books that have inspired other writers to write and other people to read more. He has made many accomplishments that a lot of writers have never achieved. According to his biography, King has sold fifty bestsellers, and has acted in a few movies that are based on his books. The use of Suspense as a literary element is constant in books written by Stephen King. This will examine Stephen King's life and the literary criticism of his short story, "The Two Dead Girls" The Green Mile. The Green Mile, "The Two Dead Girls" is a very recognized work of Stephen King's. The book series itself was so high–quality that it has also been produced as a movie. This dynamic anecdote is about two girls who are raped and murdered. A man by the name of John Coffey committed the dreadful crime. After his trial, Coffey is sentenced to death in the electric chair, which in the book they called "Old Sparky," that is located in the state penitentiary at Cold Mountain. Paul Edgecombe and Percy Wetmore, the guards watch over the men and women that die in the chair. Throughout the book, the reader is lead to debate whether or not John Coffey is a devil in human form or a different kind of being. Chapter 1 is part of the book which analyzes the thesis. In chapter 1 the author is describing to the reader what the penitentiary looked and felt like. Another significant detail in this part of the book is that King explains and describes the Green Mile. The last steps before a prisoner sits in the electric chair to be killed are normally called the last mile. In this particular penitentiary, the path to the chair was floored with tile. The planks on the floor had a lime green color to it, and that is why they called it the green mile (King Pg 85). King describes the distance for the person that had the bad fortune to walk it being a miserable long pace. The author also says that the look on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sexual harassment is one of the most registered lawsuits in the courts over the past several years. The news of this ethical issue is common in multi–national companies, political institutes, schools and colleges as well as military institutes. Because of this, many bright professionals have lost their careers; a huge amount of cash has been paid in legal settlements; there have been many devastated families; and the court has been compelled on numerous occasions to make changes in legislation related to this issue. However, everything has been changed with the new legislation. Now, there are certain aspects or laws that might not be acceptable, which were accepted ten years ago (Marshall, 2005). Now, in this 21st century, our workplace environment has changed drastically. With the passage of time, the number of working women and working minorities in the society has been increased dramatically. No doubt, new workplace legislation has succeeded to give confidence to the minorities to play their roles in the economic activity. Now, it is very easy for everyone to work together with harmony and confidence. Cultural and racial diversity is common in our workplace. The behavior of people towards accepting this diversity is also very encouraging. Society is more educated and thinks that the cast, color or culture of a person in the ... • 14. The Problem Solving And Decision Making Process There are many problem–solving and decision–making processes employed by many consultants all over the world in coming up with decisions of renting or buying house. We all make decisions of varying importance every day, so the idea that decision–making be a rather complicated task may at first seem strange. However, in reality, some people are much poorer at decision–making than they think (Thomas & Maurice, 2008). Making a decision implies that there is more than one choice to be considered. More importantly, he or she should select the option that has the highest probability of success or effectiveness as well as best fits with his goals, desires, lifestyle, or values. No business process, such as buying or renting, can be approached by structuring of all the tasks that need to be done in order for this process to work (Malthus, 1826). When making the decision either to rent or buy a place to live, financial factors must be considered. The first step in the decision making process is to determine whether or not the individual can afford to purchase a home. These costs substantially exceed the initial payment and security deposit that would be required if a person were renting instead of buying (Walsh, 2007). Before deciding to buy a home, the amount of monthly payments against the income should be considered. Homeowners insurance and property tax expenditures also should be taken in consideration. Our database is a large sample of Toronto high school students (n = 3,393) from which we identify a group of listeners, whose combination of musical likes and dislikes distinguish them as rap univores. • 24. Supreme Court Decision-Making Segal, Timpone and Howard's article 'Buyer Beware?' (2000) draws upon existing research into the appointment of Supreme Court justices by seeking to empirically prove Robert Dahl's 1957 theory that a justice's voting typically reflects the policy preferences of the president who appointed them, thereby allowing presidents to achieve their policy goals even after leaving office (pp. 557–558). The authors clarify this by stating that in the event of a clear correlation, concordance should not be considered synonymous with responsiveness. Put simply, the research is not proposing that Supreme Court justices are directly influenced by the decisions of the president who appoints them, but merely that the president and appointee share the same political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Hulbary and Walker note in "The Supreme Court Selection Process" (1980), presidents may consider a range of factors when selecting their desired justice, such as age, race, religion and the likelihood of the nomination gaining the Senate's approval. Thus, it would be reductive to conclude from Segal, Timpone and Howard's research that shared policy preferences are the primary goal of a nominating president in all cases. The authors' rightfully acknowledge this by highlighting Dwight Eisenhower's nomination of William J. Brennan, a justice far more liberal than his appointer who is widely believed to have been chosen as a concession to northern liberals before the 1956 election (pp. 569–570). A more recent example of this trend would be the 2016 nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court by Barack Obama. While it is unlikely that the centrist Garland would have been Obama's first choice to fill the vacant seat left by Antonin Scalia, he may now represent the least–worst scenario, insofar as he stands a small chance of being approved by an obstructionist Republican Senate. If this occurs, it would surely be treated as a victory by the current White House administration. As such, it is important not to automatically conflate ideological differences between president and justice with a "failed" appointment, a trap that the article occasionally falls into (p. ... • 30. The Importance Of Private Speech Question 4 (Language) The industrious classroom was bustling with children laughing, pretending, communicating and a plethora of other activities. At this age they are engaging in private speech and still in the process of developing their speech habits. Private speech is the act of children verbalizing their thoughts in a sense as to guide their actions (Santrock, 2010). A child sitting by himself is trying to mimic a pattern of colorful shapes on a piece of string. "Red, blue, green,.." he says out loud as he places the respective shapes on the string. Private speech in this case would be him saying each color aloud in order to guide the placement of each shape. Upon completion he smiles at his creation then rushes to show it to the nearest adult. "Good job, Max!", the teacher exclaims to him and asks him if can do another one for her. He says "Thank you.", and eagerly rushes back to the shapes and empties his string ready to start anew. Finishing another pattern he rushes back to the adult where he cheers because he is feeling happy that he did a great job on his pattern, the instructor thought so as well. The young boy was very receptive in terms of the instructor's comments. He knew that he had done a great job on his pattern when the teacher told him great job. The service industry answers the call of capitalism in that people are still purchasing and selling. But the industry deviates from the traditional consumer–driven practices because the consumer only uses the service of a product, but does not attain ownership of the product. This shift from product consumption to the selling of service addresses and answers the challenge that human welfare is best served by improving the quality and flow of desired services delivered, rather than by merely increasing the total dollar flow?(Hawkins and Lovins 1999). Why Should Concealed Weapons Be Allowed In Schools Alexis Pope Scruggs English 3 1 12/20/2016 Concealed weapons should NOT be allowed in schools Although people may say that school administration should be able to carry concealed weapons on school campus for protection of themselves and their students, it is a very bad and dangerous decision. Bringing concealed weapons into schools could cause many tragic things to happen such as a child or teen to possibly pick up the weapon and harm themselves or others, having an unintentional discharge occur in class and it could also cause an increase in violent behavior. So, no administration has no business carrying concealed weapons to school for any reason. It's a bad idea and would just cause heart ache and a lot of unneeded stress. "45–caliber ... The girls were raised in the traditional Catholic faith in the small village of Knockglen, Ireland with Nan moving to Dublin in her youth. They were taught to honor their parents and shun any and all forms of sexuality. The three eventually meet again at university, where they begin to challenge the traditional views that they have always taken as law. The movie documents Benny, Nan, and Eve's desires to remain pure while also living lives that will bring them happiness. The movie begins with Benny, Eve, and Nan taking their First Communion. The movie then jumps forward to Benny and Eve leaving for their first day of college in Dublin, where they are rejoined by Nan who had moved away earlier. There Benny meets Jack Foley, who she instantly falls for. Her parents wish her to marry their business partner, Sean Walsh, but Benny is disgusted by his unnerving advances and personality. The theme of this book would be, "Sometimes things may not seem how it really is." This is because the Luck Uglies, the so–called villains, protected the villagers from the Bog Noblins, the monsters. Longchance had exiled the Luck Uglies from Village Drowning because he thought they kidnapped Lady Longchance. The Luck Uglies hadn't done anything wrong, but since they lived in Beyond the Shale, they were claimed guilty. Even after, Longchance made the villagers hate the Luck Uglies, so that he would be valued more and treated better. In the end, he was considered the real villain of the ... Using a change situation in which two hotels under separate management were merged or "complexed" to form a single operating entity under new ownership, we illustrate how our model can be used to implement effective change. In particular, we explain the importance of attending to each aspect of the change process, as well as demonstrating that the change has achieved its purpose. We call our framework the "5–P model": purpose, priorities, people, process, and proof. The change began in February 1998 when the Starwood Corporation bought the Westin Hotels and Resorts Company, which managed the 758–room Swan Hotel and, shortly thereafter, the Sheraton Hotel Corporation, which managed the 1,509–room Dolphin. Since the hotels are adjacent to each other and had been jointly marketed since 1996 by a marketing group organized by one of their joint owners, Tishman Hotel and Realty Corporation, the logical next step was to seek a way to merge the two hotels' management and operations. A complication associated with this merger was that each hotel had its own specific history and way of doing things, as well as a distinct corporate culture. The larger Dolphin's Sheraton culture and the smaller Swan's Westin culture were already overshadowed by the omnipresent and dominant Disney culture. Nevertheless most ... She was only meant to be a passing character in Batman: The Animated Series ,a mainstay of 90 's childhood. In a bizarre twist of fate, and the right people knowing each other, Harley Quinn got her origin. The cartoon 's writer, Paul Dini, watched a tape of his college buddy, comedy writer Arleen Sorkin, doing comedy bits in Days of Our Lives as a weird court jester. The character's personality clicked with what Dini sought for a girl in The Joker 's crew. As Abraham Riesman tells it, "When he saw Sorkin in clown makeup, the pieces fell into place, and he came up with a silly little sidekick. He gave her the comic–book–y name of Harley Quinn [...]". This odd turn of events even established Sorkin as the long–standing voice actor for the new character. Despite their polar opposition , from their creation to how they act within the comics, both women have to deal with their gendered reality as a part of their identity and a big part of how the world interacts with them. Both handle their role as a woman with stark contrast. Harley Quinn has no problem using her gender as sexual ammunition. • 77. A Research Study On Business Education Running head: LEVERAGING RESEARCH TOENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE BUSINESS EDUCATION 1 Leveraging research to enhance undergraduate business education Luke Maass Northwest Missouri State University Authors note This paper was prepared for Student involvement in research activities in U.S. business schools used to be primarily offered to graduate students. However, many universities are now offering undergraduate research opportunities that can provide students with a deep understanding of the academic environment. Research allows the exploration and questioning of significant issues in today's world. This type of learning can provide students with more understanding than can be taught in a classroom or read in a textbook. Research challenges students to engage in the process of identifying and evaluating major issues and trends impacting businesses and society. Students also explore potential business implications that can drive innovation (The Boyer Commission). One goal of business school research is to enhance the prestige of the business school where the research is done. There is evidence that research does achieve that goal, as "research has, historically, been regarded as the primary determinant of a school 's prestige" (Armstrong, 1995: 103). For example, Business Week magazine has added a research influence measure in its ratings of business schools. If a school scores highly on that measure, it enhances the overall prestige ranking. ... • 79. Kurt Lewin and complexity theories: back to the future? Joumal of Change Management, Vol. 4, No. 4, 309–325, December 2004 i" l Kurt Lewin and complexity theories: back to the future? BERNARD BURNES Manchester School of Management, University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, Manchester, UK ABSTRACT Many writers acknowledge the significance of Kurt Lewin 's contribution to organizational change. However, over the last 20 years, where the focus has been on rapid, transformational change, Lewin 's work has increasingly become seen as outmoded and irrelevant to the needs of modem organizations. It might be expected that this tendency would increase as academics and practitioners draw on the work of complexity theorists to portray organizations as complex, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many writers have argued that organizations are also complex systems which, to survive, need to operate at the edge of chaos and have to respond continuously to changes in their environments through just such a process of spontaneous self–organizing change (Lewis, 1994; Stickland, 1998; Macintosh and MacLean, 1999, 2001; Hayles, 2000; Macbeth, 2002; Stacey, 2003). This is a far cry from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, where the received wisdom was that change was an incremental process (Quinn, 1980) and that the best way to manage this was through Kurt Lewin 's Planned approach to change (French and Bell, 1990; Cummings and Worley, 2001). Given its group–based, consensual and relatively slow nature. Planned change began to attract criticism in the 1980s from those questioning its appropriateness in an era of radical organizational change (Peters and Waterman, 1982; Wilson, 1992; Dawson, 1994; Buchanan and Storey, 1997; Hatch, 1997). The following quotation is perhaps typical of the criticisms levelled against Lewin 's approach to change: Lewin 's model was a simple one, with organizational change involving three stages; unfreezing, changing and refreezing . . . • 81. PQC/HH Community Business Analysis As early as four years old, I have always felt a sense of responsibility to the community where I lived. I remember reciting the names of different streets, schools, and notable businesses from the backseat of my mother's Jeep in the miniature municipality of Muskegon Heights, Michigan. While riding through the city, I witnessed the plague of our deprived community which lacked the amenities of the neighboring towns we would travel to. When I moved across the United States not only did I reside in another under–resourced community, I also learned this is a national epidemic tearing apart cities throughout the country. Deciding to not just become an observer on this social issue, I have honed my passion and thrust myself into fighting for economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With that win came national attention and notable praise amongst the higher education community. By the end of the 2011–2012 academic year, I accomplished feats I never imagined possible because I understood the struggle local citizens endured in the Highland Hills community. It was my struggle too. In April 2012, as I was wrapping up my year as Student Government Association President, the HBCU Digest voted us the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Student Government Association of the Year. I was also a runner–up for the HBCU Male Student of the Year, mainly for leadership with the WE ARE NOT TRASH movement. The following month, Paul Quinn College named me Student of the Year, an award I can only credit to the faculty, staff, and students for their unwavering support. The Texas Association of Developing Colleges also honored me with a state leadership award called, "a student growing from academia to global ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 83. Family Structure : Single Parent And Divorced Single parent and divorced, shared–custody families have become more common place in American society over the past fifty years. During the 1940s and 1950s, "85% of children lived in two–parent families, 70% lived in an intact (biological or adoptive) two–parent family, and the remaining 15% lived in two–parent stepfamilies..... however, since the 1970s, there has been a large increase in the proportion of children living with never–married mothers (from 1.1% in 1970 to 6.7% in 1988) or divorced mothers (from 3.5% in 1970 to 7.8% in 1988)" (Shiono and Quinn par. 2). Since there has been an increase in divorced and never–married mothers taking care of families, there have been countless studies done on how different family structures affect the children involved and the family unit as a whole. I believe that the two biological parent family structure is the best for children and society because it provides stability, allows for stable financial income, and also prevents role strain for the parents. From a functionalist perspective, single parent and shared–custody families are seen as unacceptable for society. Functionalists see the family as an important part of society, and all parts must be functional to keep society balanced and running smoothly. When one part of the society becomes dysfunctional, then the whole system breaks down. When the family unit, which is a core part of society, breaks down there are numerous issues that can occur. The family becomes dysfunctional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
