Abstract
The poem “Song of Everlasting Sorrow” (Changhen ge) was written by Bai Juyi
during the Tang Dynasty. While Bai Juyi was still alive, the poem was intro-
duced to Korea and Japan. This chapter discusses the canonization process of
Changhen ge across East Asia, which is reflected not only in the transcriptions
of Bai’s poem but also in the illustrations based on his story. Appreciating the
romantic love story of Emperor Xuan Zong and Lady Yang, Japanese painters
began to create Changhen ge paintings during the Heian period (794–1185). By
contrast, ancient Chinese and Korean literati emphasized the allegorical and
didactic aspects of painting. As a result, the theme of Changhen ge was not as
popular as “Emperor Xuan Zong’s Flight to Shu” (明皇幸蜀) in relevant paintings.
