The American Dream in The Great Gatsby Essay
American literature is much different from literature most authors write today. American
literature has meaning and a sturdy purpose. Three words with important meaning in society appear
in
American literature. The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or
restraint is the legal definition of freedom. Freedom allows people to express anything or do
anything
they want to if it doesn't offend people and as long it isn't violating any rights of others. Without
freedom a lot of things would be stolen away from us. The state of being equal, especially in status,
rights, and opportunities is the legal definition for equality. Equality provides a safety barrier for
people
because is assures them that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea of
taking a frog would not have crossed the mind of someone's head and caused them to think that they
were doing a bad thing. In his time, people had the freedom to go take a frog and have no
consequences
or fussing after it was all said and done. In today's society if someone were to read this story now
and
read about how a man used a frog just for a bet they would ask many questions in their head about
the
wellbeing of the frog and what happened to the frog after it was used. People today are more
cautious
about nature and animals and how both should be treated. In Twain's time it was not a huge concern
because of the time it was and because of other things going on around them. Their freedoms were
different in what types of things they had freedom in and what types of things were strictly
outlawed. "
"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning
over
in my mind ever since. "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember
that
all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."" (Fitzgerald, 1). This quote
from The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald represents the freedom of speech. The way this
sentence
is stated implies that people could criticize each other whenever they wanted too. This is also true in
this time

The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain
"Mark Twain's story about a young boy and his journey down the Mississippi was the first great
novel to speak in a truly American voice." Quoted from the back of The Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn, this sentence suggests the novel to be an American classic, even to go so far as to say The
American Classic, as it later goes on to say that it: "influenc[ed] subsequent generations of writers."
Based on this summary paragraph, one receives a general idea of this book's importance to
American literature, but why does this novel hold such value? What makes this novel an American
classic? Before this question can be answered, the definition of an American classic must be firmly
in place. According to the two sources investigated, an American classic is also an expression of the
times in which it was written, is "able to endure the test of time," presents truths and themes that are
relevant to all people, reflects beliefs of self–reliance and independence as are from the frontier
days, features a lively streak of humor and includes connections to other works (Qualities of Classic
Literature, Main Characteristics of American Literature). With this in mind, proceed to the
subsequent paragraphs for evidence that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is The Classic
American novel. To begin, a discussion of the time period in which Huckleberry Finn takes place is
in store. There are countless examples present in the text that paint a vivid image of the culture of
this time period. One

Themes Of Insanity, And Depression In Latin American...
"Someone behind me also stepping on stones, leaves: if I slow down, he slows down; if I run, he
runs. I turn: nobody." This quote is by Octavio Paz that reveals the theme of depression and
unhappiness. Unhappiness and depression are common themes throughout Latin American
literature. There are other themes that can lead the reader to the theme of unhappiness. The themes
depression, insanity, and death all lead to the major theme of unhappiness.
Depression is a common theme throughout all writing, and it can relate to other major themes such
as unhappiness. "Someone behind me also stepping on stones, leaves: if I slow down, he slows

William Faulkner 's Barn Burning
William Faulkner wrote many of his stories to take place in the south. The reason for this is he was
born and lived in Mississippi and because of this the south had a special place in his heart. Faulkner
used his own life and issues of his day to create a county in Mississippi where all of his stories take
place. Faulkner was a very inspirational writer for people living in southern states. Using his own
personal experiences as well as taking inspiration from his favorite writers, William Faulkner wrote
"Barn Burning" and his other works about the struggles of living life in the south for white and
black people during the civil rights movement.

When asked if he wrote good contemporaries Faulkner said, "All of us failed to match our dream of
perfection. It is our job to learn from another's failure, so we can be great"(Stein). Faulkner
acknowledged that no person on this earth is perfect and that we all make mistakes in our lives but
he also understood that it is through those mistakes of the people before us and even our own that
we learn to grow as a person and not to make the same mistakes and to find a way for us to become
the best person we can be.
Faulkner knew that he was responsible for inspiring people to write the same way he was inspired
by the writers that came before him. After being asked about who inspired him as a writer the most
Faulkner responded, "He was the father of my generation of American writers and the tradition of
American writing which our successors will carry on. He has never received his proper evaluation.
Dreiser is his older brother and Mark Twain the father of them both"(Stein). Faulkner knew that
without the people who came before him he wouldn't have written about the things he did. He knew
that he was not the beginning of a new generation of writers and writing style but one of the writers
who got to partake in one of the greatest times of writing in American history.
Faulkner's writings were a major influence for people to fight against social injustice. In this scene

White Women : Shapeshifters Of America Essay
White Women: Shapeshifters of America Throughout our history, there have been many incidents
that have helped shaped American culture. Many of these incidents have substantially affected
women. To counter these phenomena, women work as shapeshifters. That is to say, they shift and
morph their ethics and endeavors in order to adapt to their external, social environment. From the
glamorization of woman's confinement in Cotton Mather's "The Captivity of Hannah Dustan" to
overcoming political and social exclusion in Elizabeth Cady Stanton's "Declaration of Sentiments"
and, finally, to the emersion of female sexual liberty in Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a
Slave Girl, we can observe how women become different iconic symbols of America through using
religion and moral persuasion as methods to fight the tyrannies that oppress them. Cotton Mather's
historical recount, "The Captivity of Hannah Dustan," brings to light the pure American fantasy of
the white woman's captivity. Taken captive in 1675 by a group of Indians during King William's
War, Hannah eventually fought her way to freedom by killing her oppressors while they slept. She
then fled with their scalps and received great congratulations from her friends and even a "a very
generous token of favor" from the Governor of Maryland himself. In the American genre of
captivity, the captive is almost always a conventional, innocent, white woman who, according to
Mather, "stand[s] passively under the strokes of evil,

The History of American Literature
The history of American Literature starts well before this land was even called America. It has been
a great evolution to come from tribal symbols and drawings to today's Stephen King and Danielle
Steele. Literature has gone through many phases and was impacted by great events and ideas in
American history. The earliest form of literature in what would one day be known as America were
far from what modern day people would consider "Literature". The Natives who inhabited this land
first had unwritten ways of passing on experiences, beliefs, and stories. Natives relied heavily on the
verbal telling of these stories to younger generations. The same stories, fables, or belief structures
were told repeatedly, each time identical to the last, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mather's rewarding career included writings on science and medicine as well as theology and
history. His Sentiments on the Small Pox Inoculated (1721) was instrumental in introducing the
smallpox vaccine to New England. A new genre for American writers, the travel narrative, would
become especially influential late in the 1700s. Travel narratives include Travels Through the
Interior Parts of North America (1778) by Jonathan Carver and Travels Through North and South
Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee Country, etc (1791) by William Bartram .
Travel stories often blended observations on nature and landscape with tales of personal courage and
achievement. The first American newspaper, the Boston News–Letter, was founded in 1704, and
joined by the Boston Gazette in 1719. At a time when newspaper journalism was concerned
primarily with reporting political events, the New–England Courant, started by James Franklin in
1721, became the first newspaper to include literary entertainment. Franklin's younger brother
Benjamin Franklin published humorous social commentary in the Courant under the pen name of
Silence Dogwood . Magazines also appeared for the first time in the colonies during the mid–1700s.
Before 1800 magazines were concerned primarily with measuring America's developing culture
against the British model. During the 1700s Boston and Philadelphia became centers of publishing
in addition to being political and commercial centers.

Literary Realism : A Movement
Taylor Jones
Professor Anderson
American Literature II
11 October 2015
Literary Realism Realism was a movement in literature that followed Romanticism. In sharp
contrast to Romanticism, everyday things characterized the writing of this time period. The use of
authentic settings, relatable characters, and plotlines made realism what it was. In order to support
the goals of these works, authors, for the first time, created stories that truly represented class and
gender. The topics of class and money often appeared in these works. The people targeted for a story
of realism was generally the new middle class. This was the first time that the middle class was
really acknowledged in literature. Realism is all about being true to what actually happens; the
author tells all that is real even when the truth may be ugly or socially deviant of the time.
Romanticism in literature took hold in the U.S from 1830–1865. Romanticism was generally based
upon love, optimism or opportunity. Basically, this was a time of growth for the United States, and
the literature reflected that. After this time, the country 's immigrant population and working base
grew, and changes in industry began to change the way that people lived. During this time period
machines were being built, manufacturing became easier, urban areas expanded; cities became the
center of the action. Ultimately, this industrialization and urbanization led to changes both socially
and economically. All of this, created a divide

Double Consciousness In Dubois's Souls Of The Black Folk
DuBois's narration style in the first chapter of Souls of the Black Folk is very familiar, natural,
almost as if he is telling you the story himself. He begins the first chapter with the main problem of
every black American: the problem of double consciousness, ability to understand two different
points of view at the same time. Specifically, to understand what it means to be black and American
at the same time. The quote that exemplifies this best reds, "One ever feels two–ness, –an American,
a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body,
whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder (2). I think this idea of double
consciousness will continue to be prevalent throughout the entire book. DuBois's notion of double
consciousness consists of being split between "two warring ideals" one "American", another
"Negro;" you must see yourself how a white American might perceive you, which at that time was
negative. What also struck me as interesting was the fact that while telling his personal
autobiography, DuBois shows how his community shaped him because he lives a life of two parts
and it is the color line that divides his life. In this first essay, Du Bois cites that there is one question
that most white men want to ask black men: "how does it feel to be a problem" (7) and while
nobody ever directly asks this question, they make it known that this is what they wish to know, to
understand. Throughout the

Types Of Ambiguity In Poetry
22. Altar Poem Also known as 'Carmen Figuratum' or 'L shaped' poem, or 'hieroglyphic poem'. It
refers to a poem in which the words, lines and characters, or stanzas are arranged in such a way that
when looked carefully as a whole, readers see that they make a design on the page and take the
shape of the subject of the poem. The shape can be of any type and depends upon the poet's
arrangement of lines. A notable example is THE ALTAR by GEORGE HERBERT.
23. Ambiguity Also 'plurisignation' deals with figurative language. The word ambiguity is taken
from the Latin word 'ambiguus', meaning 'doubtful'. Ambiguity shows words' double or multiple
meanings. To ambiguity, WILLIAM EMPSON has written the work SEVEN TYPES OF
AMBIGUITY (1930). He criticized the seven types of ambiguities found in the poetry. An
ambiguity is represented as a puzzle to Empson. Empson reads poetry as an exploration of conflicts
within the author. In his third edition of THE SEVEN TYPES OF AMBIGUITY (1953 III Ed. And
1930 I Ed.), Empson defines ambiguity:
"An ambiguity, in ordinary speech, means something very pronounced, as rule witty or deceitful. I

Anachronism, derived from the Greek word 'ana'– 'backwards or against' + 'khronos' 'time', means

result of writer's either carelessness or his lack of research. It may be intentional. The intentional
anachronism is found in literature and helps audience for the purpose of comedy or shock. It may be

Observations on Magical Realism Essay
Observations on Magical Realism
What is magical realism? Many people have conflicting ideas about when and who first used the
term. It is likely that most people are completely confused when confronted with this subject, but
after they read a few papers on magical realism, it becomes a little clearer. The papers that Amaryll
Chanady, Luis Leal, Angle Flores, Franz Roh, and Scott Simpkins wrote have been helpful in
studying the history and theory of magical realism. Each paper has many good points in it, but the
authors argue so much over who is right or wrong that it is hard to decide who to agree with.
Angel Flores has several good points in his essay on magical realism. He says that it "has been
studied mostly through the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He used "magical" instead of "mystical" to show that "the mystery does not descend to the
represented world but rather hides and palpitates behind it" (qtd in Leal 120). Roh says,
"Expressionism shows an exaggerated preference for fantastic, extraterrestrial, remote objects." He
also says that "it employs various techniques inherited from the previous period, techniques that
endow all things with a deeper meaning and reveal mysteries that always threaten the secure
tranquillity of simple and ingenuous things" (16–18). Then he states that Expressionism is shown by
"varied designs of spherical, colored, and deformed shapes" while Impressionism is by "exquisite
colors" (19). Roh believes that "Post–Expressionism offers is the miracle of existence in its
imperturbable duration" (22). He then goes on to say that "this new art is situated resolutely between
extremes, between vague sensuality and highly structured schematics, as true philosophy may be
located between ingenuous realism and exalted idealism" (23). Art can also have a spiritual
meaning. Roh says in art "the point is not to discover the spirit beginning with objects but, on the
contrary, to discover objects beginning with the spirit" (24).
Luis Leal disagrees with several of the things that Flores says. He believes that it was Roh, not
Borges, that first used magical realism (120). He also states that it

Frederic Henry: Code Hero
A Hemingway Code Hero is a trait that almost every main character of Ernest Hemingway's novels
possesses. According to Hemingway, a Code Hero is a man (or woman) who lives correctly and
demonstrates respect for honor and courage during a chaotic and stressful world. There is a
particular pattern to how a Code Hero conducts his or her life on a day to day basis. In the novel A
Farewell to Arms, Frederic Henry is the Code Hero because fate is a determining role in his life's
events, he lives in the here and now, and he shows grace under pressure.
The first and most accurate trait that Frederic Henry exemplifies is that fate plays a determining role
in his life events. Fate rules almost every single major event in the novel. Frederic's ... Show more

He does not imagine life after death, so he seeks all rewards while he is alive. He does what he
wants and does not consider the results of his actions. He has no remorse for abandoning the Italian
army; just pleasure because he can finally be with his Catherine. He makes all of his decisions based
on what would make him happy or suit him best in that particular instance. When he jumps into the
river to escape the Italian soldiers he does not think of the consequences of being caught. Henry just
thinks of his escape. This is also the case with his and Catherine's journey to Switzerland, because
Henry only thinks of getting away with his pregnant lover. Catherine drives most of his reckless
behavior, because nothing else matters to him. Without Catherine, Henry is nothing. "Always I
wanted to see Catherine," he says in chapter nineteen. With no fear of death, Frederic Henry is free
to act on impulse as much as he wishes. He can drink himself into jaundice, he can frequently attend
brothels, or he can flee the country with the love of his life. Frederic Henry lives in the here and now
and lives his life to the fullest.
The final trait of the Hemingway Code Hero that Frederic Henry owns is his grace under pressure;
he is fearful but not afraid to die. This is shown multiple times throughout A Farewell to Arms,
whenever he is faced with death. First,

Writers of the 1920's Essay
Writers of the 1920's
The 1920's had many influential writers in literature. While reaching this time period it is almost
certain that the names William Faulkner, Earnest Hemingway, and F. Scott Fitzgerald will be found.
Each of the writers has their own personal style of writing and each one of the lives has influenced
what they write about to even the way they each portray their literature.
William Cuthbert Faulkner was born into a financially stable family from New Albany, Mississippi.
Faulkner dropped out of high school to work in his grandfathers store. While at the store Faulkner
found out he enjoyed writing. Faulkner enrolled at U of Mississippi to pursue his his passion of
writing. ("William Faulkner",Discovering Authors) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hemingway was a very effective writer. He gets his point across to his readers in a very direct way.
His novels included incidences from his life that he had encountered on a daily basis. ("Earnest
Hemingway", Discovering Authors)
F. Scott Fitzgerald was an incredible writer. He often uses incidences from his life in his writings.
Fitzgerald fell in love with Zelda Sayre and married her. They lived all over the United States and
Europe.(Eble 22)
In his writings his life with Zelda is highly portrayed. In the writing of The Basil and Duke Lee
Stories there are a lot of similarities to his life. These stories are almost a diary of his life in a
fictional form.(Eble 22–24) The most popular of Fitzgerald's writings is The Great Gatsby. This is
because Fitzgerald's writing style had matured so much from his earlier works. The book offers
great insight in to his adult life, showing how truely unhappy he was. (Eble 86–88)
Each of these writers have contributed a great deal to American literature. Faulkner, Hemingway,
and Fitzgerald's lives had a great impact on their fiction. Through their writing, readers can begin to
understand the happenings of that decade. The twenties are always going to be remembered through
their works.

The Works of Phillis Wheatley Essay examples
The Works of Phillis Wheatley
Biography:
Phillis Wheatley was born in West Africa around 1753. Sometime after her birth, she was brought to
America and purchased by John Wheatley in 1761. He turned Phillis over to his wife, Susanna, to
work as a personal maid. After realizing Phillis' intellect, the Wheatley family encouraged Phillis to
study the Bible and read English and Latin literature, history and geography.
Wheatley's first poem was published in a Rhode Island newspaper in 1767. Poems on Various
Subjects consisted of thirty–eight poems written by Wheatley, and it could be found in London in
1773. Wheatley died on December 5, 1784.*

There are many ways in which this poem could be read. A white could have read it as either a
submissive praise of Christianity or a belief that a slave believed in equality. An African–American
could have read it with similar perspectives. The whites would have found the submissive reading to
be more favorable, and the African–Americans would have favored the reading of equality.
However, it was doubtful that many, if any blacks, were permitted to read any of Wheatley's work.
Wheatley tended to write many religiously based poems. They all consisted of her true opinions.
They ranged from speaking about dead reverends that she respected to her opinions about the lives
of Atheist and Deist.
"Atheism" called out the downfalls that Wheatley believed to be corrupting the lives of those that
did not believe in God. She accused Atheists of being self–centered and selfish, and she wrote, "
[t]hy heart in unbelief will harder grow...Thy unbelief disturbs the peaceful mind" (Wheatley 130).
Since Wheatley had found her freedom in her Christianity, she felt as though Christianity was the
sole road to happiness during and after life. Wheatley knew what she believed in, and she was not
afraid to let the world know. The Deists were not safe from Wheatley's criticism either. She accused
the Deists of being the children of Satan (Wheatley 131). Some people might have found

Essay on Racism in Children's Literature
For my research project I chose the topic of Racism in Children's Literature. I chose this area of
study because it is something that bothers me and I know as a child in school I was very
uncomfortable with assignments that dealt with racism. One day I would like to make a difference to
all the people who are affected by racism. My hypothesis states that if educators are better trained to
deal with the delicate subject of racism in children's literature, books would not be banned, yet

There has been a move by many to ban these books, but is that really the answer to the problem? As
a mother, secure in my belief, I want my children to read these books. I want my children to be
angry, to form their own opinions based on what they read, to understand what people in other times
were put through, and most importantly, I want them to understand who wrote these books and why
they were written. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has over two hundred references of the "N"
word. However, Ernest Hemingway said, "All modern American literature comes from one book by
Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. It's the best book we've ever had." These angry words full of
hatred were called the best by one of the most known authors in the world, why? I read this book in
high school myself. I served many afterschool detentions because I refused to read aloud the words
of hate. I did not connect to it then, yet as I have aged I believe it was the way the book was taught.
Why did my teacher not tell us more of the background of Mark Twain? Mark Twain was not a
racist, yet it took me many years to realize that. I finally found a respect for him that I should have
known before I turned that first page. Even though the book has many racial slurs, it shows that not
just a friendship, but a strong bond could be formed between a young white boy and a black man.

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Romanticism and modernism are two philosophical thoughts so unlike each other, modernism
embracing the cold truth of reality in the industrialized world of 1920s America, romanticism this
same world through rose filtered lenses, summed up in the words of Mr. F. Scott Fitzgerald, "we are
all just humans... drunk on the idea that love, only love, could heal our broken bones." Fitzgerald
was a romantic living in the modernist 1920s, and his classic work The Great Gatsby was certainly a
romantic book, and thusly did not succeed in his time; in fact, it did not succeed until after his death
in the 1940s. Fitzgerald saw the green light, but it was just as out of reach to him as it was to Mr.

He found success on the tail of his book This Side of Paradise, which rapidly elevated him to

He had a lavish life, a romanticized life, so he dreamed romantically. Going into publishing Gatsby,
he had romantic hopes, expecting it to well outsell his other books, and he was shocked when sales
fell flat. Then, the "Jazz Age" gave way, and the Great Depression set in. People didn't want to read
about people living fabulously, dancing, driving around in flashy cars, and guzzling their alcohol,
they wanted grittier works that reflected their gritty lives. Fitzgerald tried cranking out another book,
Tender is the Night, and again, fell flat. He had lost his magic, it would seem, and with the loss of
his magic came the loss of the padding inside his pockets. Zelda suffered a serious of mental
breakdowns, and Scott was left in charge of their daughter. He hoped and dreamed for a wonderful
life, while having to support his daughter, Scottie, through private school and college, and his wife
in her countless trips to private sanitariums. The rest of the Fitzgeralds' lives were dreary, Zelda
having to bus tables in between her trips to asylums, and Scott dying in 1940. Then, suddenly,
Gatsby hit gold, and established its worth in the world. In 1945, 155,000 copies were shipped

Finding Truth in Lies in Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to...
Finding Truth in Lies in A Farewell to Arms
The foundation of Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms is based on lies. Hemingway exposes the
reality, or truth, of love and war by presenting the story of Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley,
lives ironically entrenched in lies. Henry in particular assumes a different role at every turn,
pretending, for example, to be a soldier, a civilian, a doctor or Barkley's dead fiancé.
The lies in Henry's life begin when he joins the Italian army. Here, he pretends to be "one of the
guys," silently siding with their bawdy humor and macho activities and not the morality of the
priest. Hemingway best displays this conflict in the scene where the priest urges Henry to visit
Abruzzi while the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Henry pretends to be a civilian, adopting many different forms of that which is anything but military
dress.
Also, when the Swiss authorities question the purpose of Henry and Barkley's presence in
Switzerland, he again must pretend to be other than an American member of the Italian army. Henry
says to the officials he is a "sportsman" in Switzerland for "the winter sport" (279, 280). He also
tells the officials he "has been studying architecture. My [Henry's] cousin has been studying art"
(280). Henry uses this blatant lie to become a civilian, hiding his military background.
Others also understand Henry's tendency to pretend. For example, Rinaldi comments that Henry
"only pretend[s] to be an American" (66). The priest later contradicts this statement: "You [Henry]
are a foreigner. You are a patriot" (71). Henry often plays the role of the patriotic Italian, then the
role of the patriotic American, then the role of the concerned observer, while never committing to
any one ideology. Rinaldi and the priest have seen this change in facades within Henry, as he
assumes different defining characteristics.
One of Henry's greatest lies centers around his relationship with Barkley. Initially, Henry wants
Barkley only for physical satisfaction, and he will do whatever she wants to get some. He tells her
he loves her with the hope that the declaration will prompt her to kiss him: "I lied. 'I love you' " (30).

image of isolation given to us when Garcia Marquez writes of Father Gonzaga having to write and
send a letter to the bishop. The time period of the story is established as modern day when it is
written "...in determining the difference between a hawk and an airplane...(Garcia Marquez 442)."
The town's people are portrayed as simple, primitive and crude as demonstrated when Garcia
Marquez writes "...they did not have the heart to club him to death." and then instead Pelayo
"...dragged him out of the mud and locked him up with the hens in the wire chicken coop (441)."
After the child's fever breaks Pelayo and Elisenda "felt magnanimous and decided to put the angel
on a raft with fresh water and provisions for three days and leave him to his fate on the high seas
(441)."
The town's people treat the angel as one would a steer when they burn him with a branding iron to
see if he is alive.
Though we are led to a religious history of strong Catholic background, Marquez shows us that
things have changed. "...the whole neighborhood in front of the chicken coop having fun with the
angel without the slightest reverence...(442)" Marquez is telling us that despite the early beliefs that
angels were to be put on a pedestal and extremely respected and even awed that this is not the case
now. In earlier Catholic beliefs angels were believed in, without question.

East of Eden Essay: Criticism of East of Eden
Criticism of East of Eden
Possibly the best piece of criticism I discovered was an essay by Joseph Wood Krutch. Krutch
begins by making a statement praising the enormous amount of energy that is required for a book
with the scope of East of Eden. Very briefly, Krutch summarizes the novel and draws an analogy
between it and The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann. Krutch points out that in this novel,
Steinbeck has avoided falling into the trap of writing a melodramatic as he has in some other pieces.
Krutch says of Steinbeck: "Never, I think, not even in The Grapes of Wrath, has he exhibited such a
grip upon himself and his material." (Krutch 370) Krutch points out that, especially in the first third
of the book, the character ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this extremely well written review, Webster shows us how Steinbeck, for the first time, writes
about humans with a sense of morality and dignity instead of naturalistic subjects of society.
(Webster 370) Webster points out how even though characters are supposed to be all good or all bad;
a sense of possible change is always lingering about them. (Webster 370) In close, Webster states
that East of Eden is "a sprawling narrative full of unguided life and... a novel that convincingly
demonstrates that he is still one of the most important writers of our time." (Webster 370)
The last two reviews I used were found it a rather unlikely place, Dave Cymbalisty, in an
Amazon.com user review was able to shed a light that I did not discover on my own and I found in
no other critical review. Cymbalisty called the novel overall "Deadly realistic, as beautiful and
revolting as is the actual human potentiality for good and evil." (Amazon) then continues on to
compare each of the major characters in the book to a character temperament we see in our own
lives. He shares my own feeling of inadequacy when attempting to summarize this "vast epic story".
Cymbalisty identifies the dénouement of the work as the scene in

The Use of Magical Realism in Laura Esquivel's Like Water...
Latin American literature is perhaps best known for its use of magical realism, a literary mode
where the fantastical is seamlessly blended with the ordinary, creating a sort of enhanced reality.
Though magical realism is practiced by authors from other cultures, the works of authors Salman
Rushdie and Toni Morrison, for example, are notable examples of non–Latin works in which
magical realism has been used to both great effect and great celebration, it is in the works of Latin
American authors where the style has flourished and made its mark on the literary world. Yet even
in Latin American works we can find many different kinds of magical realism, all used to achieve a
different end. In the works of the Cuban poet and novelist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Esquivel's novel follows the tradition of magical realism in its purest form and creates a welcome
entry into the Latin American canon whereas Borges' stories, most written more than forty years
prior to the publication of Esquivel's novel, use magical realism in a much more complex way and
ultimately forge a literary tradition of their own. From the very first page of Laura Esquivel's Like
Water for Chocolate it is clear that the real world in which her characters inhabit shall be greatly
exaggerated. When Esquivel's narrator describes Tita as being so sensitive to onions that "when she
was still in my great–grandmother's belly her sobs were so loud that even Nacha, the cook, who was
half deaf, could hear them easily." (Esquivel, p. 5) the reader encounters something at once
refreshing, as is always the case when one experiences the supernatural where least expected, and
yet ancient at the same time. While Esquivel could have attempted to tell her story, really the tale of
a (mostly) unrequited love, in a straightforward manner, the casual inclusion of the extraordinary
places it immediately in the tradition of magical realism. Esquivel's novel is awash in such images
and these might have been jarring to casual English readers had it not followed so closely in the
tradition of what is perhaps the most famous and most widely–read work of magical realism,
Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude. Esquivel's novel, like

Theme Of Honor In Chronicle Of A Death Foretold
IB English A: Literature HL
Written Assignment
Word Count: 1,277 An Investigation into Honor in Chronicle of a Death Foretold
According to Epic World History, Latin American men consider honor both a prized personal
possession and a crucially important expression of one's public self ("Epic World History"). To lose
one's honor was to become low and tarnished in society's eyes. Chronicle of a Death Foretold tells a
story of horrific murder driven by the loss of honor through a journalistic view. In the novella,
Chronicle of a Death Foretold, through the actions and thoughts of the Vicario brothers and
townspeople, Gabriel García Marquez highlights the absurdity of the "code of honor" and critiques
the flaws in Latin American society.
With the defensive actions of the Vicario brothers, Marquez scrutinizes how Latin American society
uses the 'code of honor' as a justification for vengeful acts. Following the crime, the Vicario brothers
speak on trial, defending their innocence: "It was a matter of honour" (29). Marquez uses the self–
justifying tone of the phrase 'matter of honor' to criticize that within Latin American society, people
do not falter to commit such heinous crimes, and perceive such acts as ways to regain honor. The
Vicario brother's justification of homicide therefore reflects the society's twisted perception of
honor. The Vicario's brother's self–reassurance is also conveyed through the numerous times they
announced, "We are going to kill Santiago Nasar"

The American Dream : A Concept Known By All
The American Dream The American Dream: a concept known by all, but deciphered distinctly
throughout time. Coined by historian James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America, the
term "American Dream" was explained as the "dream of a land in which life should be better and
richer and fuller for everyone . . ." (214). People immigrated to America from all over the world in
order to enhance their circumstances and eventually achieve this idealistic vision. However, realism
has shattered the American Dream, revealing an illusion of an optimal life that has misled a myriad
of people. A stereotypical dream that was shared by many was to own a house in a small town or
suburban area surrounded by grass and a countless number of trees, "where a man and his wife
[could] grow graciously old, warmed by the radiance of well–washed children and grandchildren"
(Steinbeck). George and Lennie from John Steinbeck 's Of Mice and Men let a dream similar to this
lead them through their lives; they planned to "get [their] jack together and . . . have a little house
and a couple of acres an ' a cow and some pigs . . ." (Steinbeck 8). The crave of such a utopia had
been continually demonstrated since the discovery of America. Walt Whitman 's poem "I Hear
America Singing" established one of many interpretations of what an ideal country should be: "Each
singing what belongs to him or her and none else . . . Singing with open mouths their strong
melodious songs."

Sublime Elements in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura...
The novel Like Water for Chocolate, published in 1989, was written by Laura Esquivel who is of
Spanish heritage. She lives in Mexico, and Like Water for Chocolate was her first novel. I feel that
in the story Laura Esquivel gives a lot of magical elements that are treated as real in order to evoke
emotions about love, but it also employs many features of sublime literature.
In Like Water for Chocolate, a girl named Tita was born. When she was first born, it mentions that
she was literally washed into this world on a great tide of tears that spilled over the edge of the table
and flooded across the kitchen floor (6). This occurrence appears to be a magical element rather than
the sublime. A baby cannot be washed into the world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By crying one tear into the wedding cake, Tita ruined the whole wedding cake and affected a
multitude of people.
Another magical characteristic in the story is that Gertrudis's body was giving off so much heat that
the wooden walls of the shower began to split and burst into flame (54). Terrified, she thought that
she would be burnt to death, and she ran out of the little enclosure just as she was, completely naked
(54). This happening is a magical element; however, it also could be linked to the sublime literature
as well because it is an example of Longinus' notion of intensification using sublime language. Also,
the scent of roses given off by Gertrudis's body a long, long way (54), all the way to town, where the
rebel forces and the federal troops were engaged in a fierce battle is a magical realist element as well
as an example of the intensification accomplished by sublime language (Longinus).
Further into the story, Tita removed the boy from her breast: a thin stream of milk sprayed out. Tita
could not understand it. It was not possible for an unmarried woman to have milk, short of a
supernatural act, unheard of in these times (76). This occurrence is both magical and sublime.
Something like this can not happen and, therefore, is magical, yet it also presents a lofty image of
lone, which is keeping with Longinus' notion of the

Writers And Editors On Canovista Restoration Essay
The story begins with the invention of writing, and it is from that time that writing and literature

we can know what everything that had happened in centuries ago. However, while reading a book,

authors about current issues, including politics. The political relationship – is evident in literature

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Great Gatsby is a classic American novel that provides the readers with insights into people's
minds, a unique decade, and the American Dream. With such a classic novel, there are,
understandably, many movies based on it. Movies aren't often accurate representations of the novel.
As such, it is a good experience to analyze the many movies based on a classic novel in order to
better understand the story and the many ways that it could be interpreted. Although every movie
about the Great Gatsby wasn't watched, a comparison of even two to the novel in question may
prove to give deeper insights to the story. Here we shall analyze the main elements of the Great

Although both movies made the setting similar, the 2013 version did a slightly better job in
representing the novel in that the house was plenty filled with books. Between the East Egg and
West Egg, the East Egg is the proper land of those belonging to old money while West Egg is the
wild land of those belonging to new money. By using narration, the 2013 version showed this off
better. Fitzgerald describes the Valley of Ashes as gray, nondescript, and desolate. The 1974 version
did a better job in that it kept all the color out, showing off how desolate and nondescript it was
supposed to be. Overall though, the 2013 version represented the settings better. Another element to
consider is that of time period accuracy. In the novel, the time is set in the twenties. The music of the
time was mainly jazz, best represented by the 1974 version as it kept strictly to jazz unlike the 2013
version. Further, the dancing included some of the new dances that go with the jazz age as well as
the classic ballroom dancing. As with the music, the 1974 version was more accurate of the time.
Girls of the time were sporting all kinds of different bobs and other short hairstyles. Though both
movies kept the look mostly accurate, the 1974 version did a better job in the dress, attitude, and
such while the 2013 version oversexualized some aspects. An important part of the twenties was that

Lady Brett Ashley is a very tart character. She goes after men and has sex with them and then they

Charles Darwin And His Theory Of Evolution
By the end of the nineteenth century, American literature began to shift away from romanticism,
which had been the primary style seen among American novelists up to and for some time after the
Civil War. With the departure from romanticism came the journey into the realm of realism. If
Romanticism can be described as searching past the obvious in search of the ideal, then Realism is
diving into the obvious to explore the ugliness, misery, and hopefully the truth of the world. In
general, Literary Realism attempts to depict life as it is, with joys and sorrows, ups and downs.
However, American Realism tends to focus more on the darker side of life, for not only had the

Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and James' Daisy Miller: A Study, some of their
respective most popular works, are perfect examples of their own forms of realism. Demonstrating
that Realist works tend to be more focused on the characters and environment than on development
of the plot, constantly throughout Huck Finn are instances of Twain taking up numerous paragraphs
with Huck 's detailed description of the nature and river around him. "The river looked miles and
miles across. The moon was so bright I could a counted the drift logs that went a slipping along,
black and still, hundreds of yards out from shore" (Twain, pg. 129). These descriptions have nothing
to do with the plot but are a digression from it. However, the river 's description enhances the
portrayal of the region, which further enhances the experience of reading the novel. Though you
cannot see the river, you can sense and feel its size through Huck 's words. Digression from the plot
is a realist technique of better representing the culture and environment of the characters being
portrayed. But what particularly made his portrayal of life on the banks of the Mississippi stand out
as a piece of realist literature was Twain's implementation of the natural idiom used by those native
to the frontier as well as a mixture of dialects. As Twain

Change In Latin American Literature

away their desires to accomplish what they need to do is a stronger person. That is an important
lesson. Literature not only is for entertainment but is used to teach lessons. Lessons help a person
grow. Throughout Latin American literature there are many themes. However in Mexican literature,
the theme of a personal journey is frequent. Throughout personal journeys, one goes through an
early stage of memories, changing of self and then remembering the hard times and their past self.

While Twain's book was rubbing Mrs. Smiley the wrong way, she grew critical of American
Literature all together. She pondered about the definition of American Literature and concluded that
"we have lost the subject of how various groups who may not escape to the wilderness are to get
along in society". This notion, valid as it may be, is in the end a moot point. It is just not possible for
a vast majority of the people to escape to the wilderness due to the various social relations that
reside. Few of us can be in Huck's situation, to not have a family or a place to call home, a rather
lonesome position, but an advantageous one for sailing down the Mississippi. Huck is lucky to have
a friend such as Jim to sail along side him, because the trip could have been a quite deal more
lonesome. Escaping to the wilderness can be just as unattractive as being restricted by society. Like
Huck dashing towards the towns and fleeing straight back to the river, we always dream of the
opposite of what we already have, but never truly reaching an equilibrium. What, then, is even the
point of romantic freedom if it but an illusion? We can take the alluring aspects from the illusion and
learn from them. It isn't the illusion that we want, for it has its own problems like an angry town

"A Rose for Emily" Literary Analysis In "A Rose for Emily", William Faulkner uses setting,
character development, and stylistic devices to express the mystery of Emily and the somewhat
gossip–obsessed attitude the townspeople have towards Emily. Faulkner uses the setting to convey
the mystery surrounding Emily and her actions. For example, Faulkner writes " knocked at the door
through which no visitor had passed since she ceased giving china–painting lessons eight or ten
years earlier." This quote shows the mystery of her house and how nobody knows what is in it or
what goes on inside of it. The townspeople are wondering what goes on behind Miss Emily's closed

The townspeople are very interested in everything about her it seems and this is just another topic
they gossip about. Another example of Miss Emily's character change and how it relates to the
mystery surrounding her is at first she starts going out "on Sunday afternoons driving in the yellow–
wheeled buggy and the matched team of bays from the livery table." Then, later on, she wants
poison for some odd reason and says "I want arsenic, The druggist looked down at her. She looked
back at him, erect, her face like a strained flag.... What you are going to use it for. Miss Emily just
stared at him."(pg.651) Miss Emily is performing many strange actions that spark the interest of the
townspeople. The inhabitants of the town try to give any explanation for the mystery of why she's
buying the poison, such as she is going to commit suicide. Her actions are just encouraging the
townspeople to gossip about the mystery. Faulkner utilizes stylistic devices such as imagery, and
figurative language to express the townspeople and their feeling towards Emily. For example, the
author describes Miss Emily in great detail such as "her eyes, lost in the fatty ridges of her face,
looked like two small pieces of coal pressed into a lump of dough as the moved from one face to

Dante 's View Of Hell And Purgatory
When one thinks about the idea of hell, they often find their minds wandering back to the great work
of Dante Alighieri in The Inferno, or better known as Dante's Inferno. In this story, Dante is lead
through the nine circles of hell with his tour guide, Virgil the Roman poet to meet the final
destination of heaven. "Major and startling innovations, such as the choice of the poet Vergil as
Dante 's guide through both hell and purgatory and the inclusion in the Comedy of characters taken
from classical antiquity, demonstrate the importance that ancient Roman literature, history, and
mythology held for "the chief imagination of Christendom," as Yeats defined our poet," (Scott).

While Christianity has been divided into many different churches such as the Catholics, Baptists,
and Presbyterians, the same theological ideas remain. It is generally believed that one who does
good actions will be rewarded with the right to enter Heaven. While those who display negative
moral actions will be forced into the fiery gates of hell. This is the man basis of religion in America.
There are many other types of religions that have the same type of ideas. "Death could scarce be
more bitter than that place! But since it came to good, I will recount that all that I found revealed
there by God's grace," (Pg. 28). Thus, as so many people believe in religion and the ideas behind it,
it is easily seen that the threat of hell is something that can alter the actions of humans. Even
America was founded on the idea of living under God, as stated in several documents. If the threat
of hell was nonexistent, or had no profound effect on human actions, then religion wouldn't hold
such a high standard in any society. "In accusing the popes of making gold and silver their gods,
Dante is repeating the characteristic denunciation of idolatry leveled by the Old Testament prophets
against religious authorities," (Franke). Religion holds a high position in everyday life's, even Dante,
as it does present the threat of hell which will change a person's actions. Similar to religious reasons,
the threat of hell does affect a person's moral actions

theme is the importance of love and loss in a male emale relationship. These two lovers were so

He had just suffered a major loss and dealt with it in the only way that he knew; through alcohol.
Although drinking at this point was not actually mentioned directly, we can nevertheless assume that
he was going to make this connection just because of the setting in the rain. This book had many
examples of symbolism and they all point to the fact that there is always a terrible price to pay for
weak actions or for blind love.
The word choice and ordering of detail of this book also leads one to believe that they are reading a
classic. Hemingway's style is one of simple, straightforward dialogue with the absence of slang.
Many generations of readers can read and understand the story. An example of this simplicity of
dialogue is as follows:
'Where do you want to go, Cat?'
'Montreux.'
'It is a very nice place,' the official said. 'I think you will like that place.'
'Here at Locarno is a very nice place,' another official said' (Hemingway 282).
Although this simple dialogue is very easy to read, it is also very powerful in it's directness and
simplicity. On the other hand, his use of language when describing scenery is very elaborate.
The next year there were many victories. The mountain that was beyond the valley and
the hillside where the chestnut forest grew was captured and there were victories beyond
the plain on the plateau to the south and we

Ernest Hemmingway: Shifting Gender Roles in The Sun Also...
Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Chicago, Illinois. Hemingway was an American
author and journalist. Kemen Zabala author of "HEMINGWAY: A STUDY IN GENDER AND
SEXUALITY" states that Hemingway was commonly known for portraying the sterile and
disillusioned environment created by the massive human loss of World War I. Perhaps his exposure
to the atrocious nature of war as a Red Cross ambulance driver in the Europe during World War I
aided and further influenced his literary capturing of warfare and how it had affected the "Lost
Generation". Hemingway himself popularized this term, it indicates the coming of age generation
during World War I. Ashley Torres, author of "Gender Roles Shift in Ernest Hemingway's The Sun
Also Rises" claims that the "Lost Generation" mirrors the disenchanted and hopeless attitudes
generated by the war. Although the war resulted in the loss of millions of men, changing the social
and cultural customs, the youths of the "Lost Generation" were "battered but not lost" (Gerald,
Kennedy "American Literature Vol. 63" (Jun. 1991), p. 192). As a result, the strict gender roles set
by the preceding Victorian era, did not apply anymore, as women now took on many jobs meant for
men. With a newfound sense of experimentation, the men and women of the "Lost Generation"
could reverse gender roles freely. This paper will analyze the shift in gender roles found
predominantly in Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises.

Flannery O'Connor and Her Works
Flannery O'Connor
"I am a writer because writing is what I do best,"
Known for her unique collection of short stories, Flannery O'Connor had a major impact on the
writing industry during the 20th century. She is still to this day considered one of the most famous
American authors. She very well shows that your life really impacts your writing technique, and
tone of writing.
She was born March 3rd, 1925. O'Connor was raised by two very Catholic parents in Savanna,
Georgia. Her father, Edward Francis O'Connor, worked as a real estate agent and was a World War II
veteran. O'Connors mother, Regina Lucille O'Connor, was a very social woman and a stay at home
mother. O'Connor was the only child of Edward and Regina, and was always a different type of girl.
She was that type of girl who would always be alone on the playground during recess, talking to
herself. She didn't have many friends, her only "friends" were her chickens, who she would knit
clothes for. She had an interest of fowls, especially with oddities.
When O'Connor was 12, her father took a position with the American Legion Post of Georgia and
spent most of his time traveling. Edward was traveling so much that he and the family started to
neglect financial obligations, and ended up having to move to Milledgeville. A few years later, when
O'Connor was 15, her father died at age 45 from Lupus. O'Connors father was always on the road,
so he was hardly at home. With him always gone and then his passing, it was clear that

The Different Lives of Jake Barnes and Brett Ashley in...
In the novel The Sun Also Rises we read about two characters that seem to depend on each other.
Ernest Hemingway writes this story ingeniously to show how these two characters are intertwined
with one another. One character can't get away from the other because of the friendship they share.
We have to look at the lives of Jake Barnes and Brett Ashley from both points of view to understand
how they are complicated.
Brett Ashley was a different type of lady. She drinks all the time and enjoys the company of men.
When she feels unhappy she drinks more. Hemingway's character the count said, "Let's enjoy a little
more of this," Brett pushed her glass forward. The count poured very carefully. "There, my dear.

He served in war and lost his ability to physically pleasure women. He tries to enjoy the simple
things in life but ends up having to put up with Brett and her issues. Jake is an author and works his
office in Paris. Fishing and watching bull fights are his hobbies. In Pamplona, Jake and his guests
were allowed to stay at the Hotel Montoya because Jake was considered an aficionado.
Aficion means passion. An aficionado is one who is passionate about
the bull–fights. All the good bull–fighters stayed at Montoya's hotel;
that is, those with aficion stayed there. The commercial bull–fighters
stayed once, perhaps, and then did not come back. (136)
Jake loses his aficionado status when he introduces Brett to Pedro. Jake's biggest fault is his love for
Brett because she will only love him as a good dependable friend.
Jake and Brett's relationship with one another is ridiculous. Brett goes out with other men and gets
drunk. Jake loves and hates Brett for the actions she takes. Brett tells Jake that she loves him and
talks about the other men she has been with. Jake tells her that she is being drunk and to shut up
about it. Brett leaves the men she has been with just to come back to Jake for support. Jake loves

Emily Dickinson and Adrienne Rich Essay
Emily Dickinson and Adrienne Rich
The modernist period, stretching from the late 19th century to approximately 1960, is a very distinct
phase in the progression of American literature, employing the use of novel literary techniques
which stray away from the traditional literary styles observed in the time preceding the period.
Modernist writers explore new styles themes, and content in their compositions, encompassing
issues ranging from race (Kate Chopin) to gender (H.D.) to sexuality (James Baldwin), as well as
many others. The Modernist movement, however novel and unique, did not develop spontaneously.
A few writers leading up to the movement exhibit obvious modernist views in their writing. These
include male writers Ralph ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rich, a writer extremely interested in Emily Dickinson's life and poetry, was also deeply influenced
by her. Rich composed poems, essays, and criticism about Dickinson, borrowed lines from her
poetry, and even drew parallels between her own life and Dickinson's. Similarities between the two
poets also extended to style within their writing, as well as modernist themes that both advocate,
especially feminism. To understand the extent that Dickinson's modernist tendencies shine through
in Adrienne Rich's writings, it is important to first explore the impact Dickinson had on Rich's life
and compositions in general. It is no accident that Rich adapts styles and themes from Dickinson's
poetry; many parallels can be drawn between Dickinson's and Rich's life, including how "she [like
Dickinson] set herself apart [from society's framework] in order to define her own emotional and
social territory" (Martin, 171). Also, both writers revered and feared their fathers, even though both
chose to pit themselves "in opposition to [their fathers], to live according to [their] own premises"
(Langdell, 166). Although Rich states that she could not have lived her life the way Emily Dickinson
does in her essay "Vesuvius at Home: the Power of Emily Dickinson (1975)," she also admits that
she has "come to understand her necessities [and] could have been a witness in her defense" (Rich,
158). Rich admires Dickinson, even calling some poems of her own mere "imitations"

The American Dream in The Great Gatsby Essay

  • 1. The American Dream in The Great Gatsby Essay American literature is much different from literature most authors write today. American literature has meaning and a sturdy purpose. Three words with important meaning in society appear in American literature. The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint is the legal definition of freedom. Freedom allows people to express anything or do anything they want to if it doesn't offend people and as long it isn't violating any rights of others. Without freedom a lot of things would be stolen away from us. The state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities is the legal definition for equality. Equality provides a safety barrier for people because is assures them that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The idea of taking a frog would not have crossed the mind of someone's head and caused them to think that they were doing a bad thing. In his time, people had the freedom to go take a frog and have no consequences or fussing after it was all said and done. In today's society if someone were to read this story now and read about how a man used a frog just for a bet they would ask many questions in their head about the wellbeing of the frog and what happened to the frog after it was used. People today are more cautious about nature and animals and how both should be treated. In Twain's time it was not a huge concern

"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."" (Fitzgerald, 1). This quote from The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald represents the freedom of speech. The way this sentence is stated implies that people could criticize each other whenever they wanted too. • 4. The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain "Mark Twain's story about a young boy and his journey down the Mississippi was the first great novel to speak in a truly American voice." Quoted from the back of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, this sentence suggests the novel to be an American classic, even to go so far as to say The American Classic, as it later goes on to say that it: "influenc[ed] subsequent generations of writers." Based on this summary paragraph, one receives a general idea of this book's importance to American literature, but why does this novel hold such value? What makes this novel an American classic? Before this question can be answered, the definition of an American classic must be firmly in place. According to the two sources investigated, an American classic is also an expression of the times in which it was written, is "able to endure the test of time," presents truths and themes that are relevant to all people, reflects beliefs of self–reliance and independence as are from the frontier days, features a lively streak of humor and includes connections to other works (Qualities of Classic Literature, Main Characteristics of American Literature). With this in mind, proceed to the subsequent paragraphs for evidence that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is The Classic American novel. To begin, a discussion of the time period in which Huckleberry Finn takes place is in store. There are countless examples present in the text that paint a vivid image of the culture of this time period. One ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Faulkner knew that he was responsible for inspiring people to write the same way he was inspired by the writers that came before him. After being asked about who inspired him as a writer the most Faulkner responded, "He was the father of my generation of American writers and the tradition of American writing which our successors will carry on. He has never received his proper evaluation. Dreiser is his older brother and Mark Twain the father of them both"(Stein). He knew that he was not the beginning of a new generation of writers and writing style but one of the writers who got to partake in one of the greatest times of writing in American history. • 10. White Women : Shapeshifters Of America Essay White Women: Shapeshifters of America Throughout our history, there have been many incidents that have helped shaped American culture. Many of these incidents have substantially affected women. To counter these phenomena, women work as shapeshifters. That is to say, they shift and morph their ethics and endeavors in order to adapt to their external, social environment. From the glamorization of woman's confinement in Cotton Mather's "The Captivity of Hannah Dustan" to overcoming political and social exclusion in Elizabeth Cady Stanton's "Declaration of Sentiments" and, finally, to the emersion of female sexual liberty in Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, we can observe how women become different iconic symbols of America through using religion and moral persuasion as methods to fight the tyrannies that oppress them. Cotton Mather's historical recount, "The Captivity of Hannah Dustan," brings to light the pure American fantasy of the white woman's captivity. Taken captive in 1675 by a group of Indians during King William's War, Hannah eventually fought her way to freedom by killing her oppressors while they slept. She then fled with their scalps and received great congratulations from her friends and even a "a very generous token of favor" from the Governor of Maryland himself. In the American genre of captivity, the captive is almost always a conventional, innocent, white woman who, according to Mather, "stand[s] passively under the strokes of evil, ... It has been a great evolution to come from tribal symbols and drawings to today's Stephen King and Danielle Steele. Literature has gone through many phases and was impacted by great events and ideas in American history. The earliest form of literature in what would one day be known as America were far from what modern day people would consider "Literature". Travel narratives include Travels Through the Interior Parts of North America (1778) by Jonathan Carver and Travels Through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee Country, etc (1791) by William Bartram . Travel stories often blended observations on nature and landscape with tales of personal courage and achievement. At a time when newspaper journalism was concerned primarily with reporting political events, the New–England Courant, started by James Franklin in 1721, became the first newspaper to include literary entertainment. • 14. Literary Realism : A Movement Taylor Jones Professor Anderson American Literature II 11 October 2015 Literary Realism Realism was a movement in literature that followed Romanticism. In sharp contrast to Romanticism, everyday things characterized the writing of this time period. The use of authentic settings, relatable characters, and plotlines made realism what it was. In order to support the goals of these works, authors, for the first time, created stories that truly represented class and gender. The topics of class and money often appeared in these works. The people targeted for a story of realism was generally the new middle class. This was the first time that the middle class was really acknowledged in literature. Realism is all about being true to what actually happens; the author tells all that is real even when the truth may be ugly or socially deviant of the time. Romanticism in literature took hold in the U.S from 1830–1865. Romanticism was generally based upon love, optimism or opportunity. Basically, this was a time of growth for the United States, and the literature reflected that. After this time, the country 's immigrant population and working base grew, and changes in industry began to change the way that people lived. During this time period machines were being built, manufacturing became easier, urban areas expanded; cities became the center of the action. Ultimately, this industrialization and urbanization led to changes both socially and economically. All of this, created a divide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Double Consciousness In Dubois's Souls Of The Black Folk DuBois's narration style in the first chapter of Souls of the Black Folk is very familiar, natural, almost as if he is telling you the story himself. He begins the first chapter with the main problem of every black American: the problem of double consciousness, ability to understand two different points of view at the same time. Specifically, to understand what it means to be black and American at the same time. The quote that exemplifies this best reds, "One ever feels two–ness, –an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder (2). I think this idea of double consciousness will continue to be prevalent throughout the entire book. DuBois's notion of double consciousness consists of being split between "two warring ideals" one "American", another "Negro;" you must see yourself how a white American might perceive you, which at that time was negative. What also struck me as interesting was the fact that while telling his personal autobiography, DuBois shows how his community shaped him because he lives a life of two parts and it is the color line that divides his life. In this first essay, Du Bois cites that there is one question that most white men want to ask black men: "how does it feel to be a problem" (7) and while nobody ever directly asks this question, they make it known that this is what they wish to know, to understand. It refers to a poem in which the words, lines and characters, or stanzas are arranged in such a way that when looked carefully as a whole, readers see that they make a design on the page and take the shape of the subject of the poem. The shape can be of any type and depends upon the poet's arrangement of lines. A notable example is THE ALTAR by GEORGE HERBERT. 23. Ambiguity Also 'plurisignation' deals with figurative language. The word ambiguity is taken from the Latin word 'ambiguus', meaning 'doubtful'. Ambiguity shows words' double or multiple meanings. To ambiguity, WILLIAM EMPSON has written the work SEVEN TYPES OF AMBIGUITY (1930). He criticized the seven types of ambiguities found in the poetry. An ambiguity is represented as a puzzle to Empson. Empson reads poetry as an exploration of conflicts within the author. In his third edition of THE SEVEN TYPES OF AMBIGUITY (1953 III Ed. And 1930 I Ed.), Empson defines ambiguity: "An ambiguity, in ordinary speech, means something very pronounced, as rule witty or deceitful. It is likely that most people are completely confused when confronted with this subject, but after they read a few papers on magical realism, it becomes a little clearer. The papers that Amaryll Chanady, Luis Leal, Angle Flores, Franz Roh, and Scott Simpkins wrote have been helpful in studying the history and theory of magical realism. Each paper has many good points in it, but the authors argue so much over who is right or wrong that it is hard to decide who to agree with. He also says that "it employs various techniques inherited from the previous period, techniques that endow all things with a deeper meaning and reveal mysteries that always threaten the secure tranquillity of simple and ingenuous things" (16–18). Then he states that Expressionism is shown by "varied designs of spherical, colored, and deformed shapes" while Impressionism is by "exquisite colors" (19). Roh believes that "Post–Expressionism offers is the miracle of existence in its imperturbable duration" (22). He then goes on to say that "this new art is situated resolutely between extremes, between vague sensuality and highly structured schematics, as true philosophy may be located between ingenuous realism and exalted idealism" (23). Art can also have a spiritual meaning. Roh says in art "the point is not to discover the spirit beginning with objects but, on the contrary, to discover objects beginning with the spirit" (24). Luis Leal disagrees with several of the things that Flores says. He believes that it was Roh, not Borges, that first used magical realism (120). He also states that it ... • 24. Frederic Henry: Code Hero A Hemingway Code Hero is a trait that almost every main character of Ernest Hemingway's novels possesses. According to Hemingway, a Code Hero is a man (or woman) who lives correctly and demonstrates respect for honor and courage during a chaotic and stressful world. There is a particular pattern to how a Code Hero conducts his or her life on a day to day basis. In the novel A Farewell to Arms, Frederic Henry is the Code Hero because fate is a determining role in his life's events, he lives in the here and now, and he shows grace under pressure. The first and most accurate trait that Frederic Henry exemplifies is that fate plays a determining role in his life events. Fate rules almost every single major event in the novel. Frederic's ... When he jumps into the river to escape the Italian soldiers he does not think of the consequences of being caught. Henry just thinks of his escape. This is also the case with his and Catherine's journey to Switzerland, because Henry only thinks of getting away with his pregnant lover. They lived all over the United States and Europe.(Eble 22) In his writings his life with Zelda is highly portrayed. In the writing of The Basil and Duke Lee Stories there are a lot of similarities to his life. These stories are almost a diary of his life in a fictional form.(Eble 22–24) The most popular of Fitzgerald's writings is The Great Gatsby. This is because Fitzgerald's writing style had matured so much from his earlier works. The book offers great insight in to his adult life, showing how truely unhappy he was. (Eble 86–88) Each of these writers have contributed a great deal to American literature. Faulkner, Hemingway, and Fitzgerald's lives had a great impact on their fiction. Through their writing, readers can begin to understand the happenings of that decade. The twenties are always going to be remembered through their works. Sometime after her birth, she was brought to America and purchased by John Wheatley in 1761. He turned Phillis over to his wife, Susanna, to work as a personal maid. However, it was doubtful that many, if any blacks, were permitted to read any of Wheatley's work. Wheatley tended to write many religiously based poems. They all consisted of her true opinions. They ranged from speaking about dead reverends that she respected to her opinions about the lives of Atheist and Deist. "Atheism" called out the downfalls that Wheatley believed to be corrupting the lives of those that did not believe in God. She accused Atheists of being self–centered and selfish, and she wrote, " [t]hy heart in unbelief will harder grow...Thy unbelief disturbs the peaceful mind" (Wheatley 130). Hemingway exposes the reality, or truth, of love and war by presenting the story of Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, lives ironically entrenched in lies. Henry in particular assumes a different role at every turn, pretending, for example, to be a soldier, a civilian, a doctor or Barkley's dead fiancé. The lies in Henry's life begin when he joins the Italian army. Henry pretends to be a civilian, adopting many different forms of that which is anything but military dress. Also, when the Swiss authorities question the purpose of Henry and Barkley's presence in Switzerland, he again must pretend to be other than an American member of the Italian army. Henry says to the officials he is a "sportsman" in Switzerland for "the winter sport" (279, 280). He also tells the officials he "has been studying architecture. My [Henry's] cousin has been studying art" (280). Henry uses this blatant lie to become a civilian, hiding his military background. Others also understand Henry's tendency to pretend. For example, Rinaldi comments that Henry "only pretend[s] to be an American" (66). The priest later contradicts this statement: "You [Henry] are a foreigner. You are a patriot" (71). Henry often plays the role of the patriotic Italian, then the role of the patriotic American, then the role of the concerned observer, while never committing to any one ideology. Rinaldi and the priest have seen this change in facades within Henry, as he assumes different defining characteristics. One of Henry's greatest lies centers around his relationship with Barkley. Latin American literature is perhaps best known for its use of magical realism, a literary mode where the fantastical is seamlessly blended with the ordinary, creating a sort of enhanced reality. Though magical realism is practiced by authors from other cultures, the works of authors Salman Rushdie and Toni Morrison, for example, are notable examples of non–Latin works in which magical realism has been used to both great effect and great celebration, it is in the works of Latin American authors where the style has flourished and made its mark on the literary world. From the very first page of Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate it is clear that the real world in which her characters inhabit shall be greatly exaggerated. When Esquivel's narrator describes Tita as being so sensitive to onions that "when she was still in my great–grandmother's belly her sobs were so loud that even Nacha, the cook, who was half deaf, could hear them easily." (Esquivel, p. 5) the reader encounters something at once refreshing, as is always the case when one experiences the supernatural where least expected, and yet ancient at the same time. While Esquivel could have attempted to tell her story, really the tale of a (mostly) unrequited love, in a straightforward manner, the casual inclusion of the extraordinary places it immediately in the tradition of magical realism. Esquivel's novel is awash in such images and these might have been jarring to casual English readers had it not followed so closely in the tradition of what is perhaps the most famous and most widely–read work of magical realism, Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude. To lose one's honor was to become low and tarnished in society's eyes. Chronicle of a Death Foretold tells a story of horrific murder driven by the loss of honor through a journalistic view. In the novella, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, through the actions and thoughts of the Vicario brothers and townspeople, Gabriel García Marquez highlights the absurdity of the "code of honor" and critiques the flaws in Latin American society. With the defensive actions of the Vicario brothers, Marquez scrutinizes how Latin American society uses the 'code of honor' as a justification for vengeful acts. Following the crime, the Vicario brothers speak on trial, defending their innocence: "It was a matter of honour" (29). Marquez uses the self– justifying tone of the phrase 'matter of honor' to criticize that within Latin American society, people do not falter to commit such heinous crimes, and perceive such acts as ways to regain honor. The Vicario brother's justification of homicide therefore reflects the society's twisted perception of honor. The Vicario's brother's self–reassurance is also conveyed through the numerous times they announced, "We are going to kill Santiago Nasar" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. The American Dream : A Concept Known By All The American Dream The American Dream: a concept known by all, but deciphered distinctly throughout time. Coined by historian James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America, the term "American Dream" was explained as the "dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone . . ." (214). People immigrated to America from all over the world in order to enhance their circumstances and eventually achieve this idealistic vision. However, realism has shattered the American Dream, revealing an illusion of an optimal life that has misled a myriad of people. A stereotypical dream that was shared by many was to own a house in a small town or suburban area surrounded by grass and a countless number of trees, "where a man and his wife [could] grow graciously old, warmed by the radiance of well–washed children and grandchildren" (Steinbeck). George and Lennie from John Steinbeck 's Of Mice and Men let a dream similar to this lead them through their lives; they planned to "get [their] jack together and . . . have a little house and a couple of acres an ' a cow and some pigs . . ." (Steinbeck 8). The crave of such a utopia had been continually demonstrated since the discovery of America. Walt Whitman 's poem "I Hear America Singing" established one of many interpretations of what an ideal country should be: "Each singing what belongs to him or her and none else . . . Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She lives in Mexico, and Like Water for Chocolate was her first novel. I feel that in the story Laura Esquivel gives a lot of magical elements that are treated as real in order to evoke emotions about love, but it also employs many features of sublime literature. In Like Water for Chocolate, a girl named Tita was born. When she was first born, it mentions that she was literally washed into this world on a great tide of tears that spilled over the edge of the table and flooded across the kitchen floor (6). This occurrence appears to be a magical element rather than the sublime. A baby cannot be washed into the world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By crying one tear into the wedding cake, Tita ruined the whole wedding cake and affected a multitude of people. Another magical characteristic in the story is that Gertrudis's body was giving off so much heat that the wooden walls of the shower began to split and burst into flame (54). Terrified, she thought that she would be burnt to death, and she ran out of the little enclosure just as she was, completely naked (54). This happening is a magical element; however, it also could be linked to the sublime literature as well because it is an example of Longinus' notion of intensification using sublime language. Also, the scent of roses given off by Gertrudis's body a long, long way (54), all the way to town, where the rebel forces and the federal troops were engaged in a fierce battle is a magical realist element as well as an example of the intensification accomplished by sublime language (Longinus). Further into the story, Tita removed the boy from her breast: a thin stream of milk sprayed out. Tita could not understand it. It was not possible for an unmarried woman to have milk, short of a supernatural act, unheard of in these times (76). This occurrence is both magical and sublime. Something like this can not happen and, therefore, is magical, yet it also presents a lofty image of lone, which is keeping with Longinus' notion of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby is a classic American novel that provides the readers with insights into people's minds, a unique decade, and the American Dream. With such a classic novel, there are, understandably, many movies based on it. Movies aren't often accurate representations of the novel. As such, it is a good experience to analyze the many movies based on a classic novel in order to better understand the story and the many ways that it could be interpreted. Although every movie about the Great Gatsby wasn't watched, a comparison of even two to the novel in question may prove to give deeper insights to the story. Although both movies made the setting similar, the 2013 version did a slightly better job in representing the novel in that the house was plenty filled with books. Between the East Egg and West Egg, the East Egg is the proper land of those belonging to old money while West Egg is the wild land of those belonging to new money. By using narration, the 2013 version showed this off better. Fitzgerald describes the Valley of Ashes as gray, nondescript, and desolate. The 1974 version did a better job in that it kept all the color out, showing off how desolate and nondescript it was supposed to be. Overall though, the 2013 version represented the settings better. Another element to consider is that of time period accuracy. In the novel, the time is set in the twenties. The music of the time was mainly jazz, best represented by the 1974 version as it kept strictly to jazz unlike the 2013 version. Further, the dancing included some of the new dances that go with the jazz age as well as the classic ballroom dancing. As with the music, the 1974 version was more accurate of the time. Girls of the time were sporting all kinds of different bobs and other short hairstyles. Though both movies kept the look mostly accurate, the 1974 version did a better job in the dress, attitude, and such while the 2013 version oversexualized some aspects. Charles Darwin And His Theory Of Evolution By the end of the nineteenth century, American literature began to shift away from romanticism, which had been the primary style seen among American novelists up to and for some time after the Civil War. With the departure from romanticism came the journey into the realm of realism. If Romanticism can be described as searching past the obvious in search of the ideal, then Realism is diving into the obvious to explore the ugliness, misery, and hopefully the truth of the world. In general, Literary Realism attempts to depict life as it is, with joys and sorrows, ups and downs. However, American Realism tends to focus more on the darker side of life, for not only had the nation just undergone a Civil War, but this was also the time of Charles ... Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and James' Daisy Miller: A Study, some of their respective most popular works, are perfect examples of their own forms of realism. Demonstrating that Realist works tend to be more focused on the characters and environment than on development of the plot, constantly throughout Huck Finn are instances of Twain taking up numerous paragraphs with Huck 's detailed description of the nature and river around him. "The river looked miles and miles across. The moon was so bright I could a counted the drift logs that went a slipping along, black and still, hundreds of yards out from shore" (Twain, pg. 129). These descriptions have nothing to do with the plot but are a digression from it. However, the river 's description enhances the portrayal of the region, which further enhances the experience of reading the novel. Though you cannot see the river, you can sense and feel its size through Huck 's words. Digression from the plot is a realist technique of better representing the culture and environment of the characters being portrayed. But what particularly made his portrayal of life on the banks of the Mississippi stand out as a piece of realist literature was Twain's implementation of the natural idiom used by those native to the frontier as well as a mixture of dialects. While Twain's book was rubbing Mrs. Smiley the wrong way, she grew critical of American Literature all together. She pondered about the definition of American Literature and concluded that "we have lost the subject of how various groups who may not escape to the wilderness are to get along in society". This notion, valid as it may be, is in the end a moot point. It is just not possible for a vast majority of the people to escape to the wilderness due to the various social relations that reside. Few of us can be in Huck's situation, to not have a family or a place to call home, a rather lonesome position, but an advantageous one for sailing down the Mississippi. Huck is lucky to have a friend such as Jim to sail along side him, because the trip could have been a quite deal more lonesome. Escaping to the wilderness can be just as unattractive as being restricted by society. Like Huck dashing towards the towns and fleeing straight back to the river, we always dream of the opposite of what we already have, but never truly reaching an equilibrium. Then, later on, she wants poison for some odd reason and says "I want arsenic, The druggist looked down at her. She looked back at him, erect, her face like a strained flag.... The inhabitants of the town try to give any explanation for the mystery of why she's buying the poison, such as she is going to commit suicide. Her actions are just encouraging the townspeople to gossip about the mystery. Faulkner utilizes stylistic devices such as imagery, and figurative language to express the townspeople and their feeling towards Emily. This is the man basis of religion in America. There are many other types of religions that have the same type of ideas. "Death could scarce be more bitter than that place! Kemen Zabala author of "HEMINGWAY: A STUDY IN GENDER AND SEXUALITY" states that Hemingway was commonly known for portraying the sterile and disillusioned environment created by the massive human loss of World War I. Perhaps his exposure to the atrocious nature of war as a Red Cross ambulance driver in the Europe during World War I aided and further influenced his literary capturing of warfare and how it had affected the "Lost Generation". Hemingway himself popularized this term, it indicates the coming of age generation during World War I. Ashley Torres, author of "Gender Roles Shift in Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises" claims that the "Lost Generation" mirrors the disenchanted and hopeless attitudes generated by the war. Although the war resulted in the loss of millions of men, changing the social and cultural customs, the youths of the "Lost Generation" were "battered but not lost" (Gerald, Kennedy "American Literature Vol. 63" (Jun. 1991), p. 192). As a result, the strict gender roles set by the preceding Victorian era, did not apply anymore, as women now took on many jobs meant for men. With a newfound sense of experimentation, the men and women of the "Lost Generation" could reverse gender roles freely.
