Space 170 Bi Fall 2016
Grant Robbins Astronomy 170 BI Fall 2016 Actually observing the sky through the campus Steward
Observatory telescope brought perspective to just how lucky we are in Tucson to have such amazing
resources to study the sky. The location of the telescope is amazing; right in the middle of our historic
campus which allows the general public accessibility to something that might otherwise be reserved
for astronomers or scientists. Having a 21 telescope to view the night sky expands the field of view
that wouldn t be as wide ranging with an ordinary telescope. Having looked through telescopes that
were probably 4.5 previously, I wasn t really sure what to expect looking through a scientific version.
Clear weather in late November and having a night sky ordinance in Tucson also allows optimum
viewing opportunities year round. Thanks to a local ordinance that strictly limits artificial light
pollution, Tucson supposedly has the darkest night skies of any city its size in the country. Seeing
Stars in Tucson s Brilliant Night Sky. The Washington Post. WP Company, n.d. Web. 05 Dec. 2016.
For a city of 500,000, Tucson is an astonishingly good place for stargazing. I was already aware that
the magnification quality of the telescope influences exactly what is visible through the eyepiece.
Knowing a telescope s optical system captures an image like a camera lens. I realized my eyes had to
adjust to the dark. At first I had a difficult time seeing things until I

Symptoms And Treatment Of Cancer Patients
1.Introduction:
The numbers of people who are dying due to crucial diseases such as cancer have increased, according
to world health organization (WHO) cited in Jane et al (2008), in
2005, 7.6 million people died from cancer, a figure expected to increase to 9 million people by 2015 ,
and increasing further to 11.4 million dying in 2030. Therefore, scientists have attempted to find
appropriate solution for those problems. Since the nineteenth century, solutions have been introduced
by scientists, that use radiation for the diagnosis of diseases instead of surgery (Pope, 1999), which
has led to great
advances in medicine because diagnostic technology such as CT and X rays scanning, nuclear
medicine (PET) and mammography, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

interactions are in two main different ways:if ionizing radiationdirectly interacts,it is

2.1.1 Charged particle: This type interacts directly with matter, which can be
generatedfrom fast electrons such as Beta particles or from heavy charged particle
such as; alpha particle.
Beta particle:Most radioactive nucleuses are not stable. Therefore, they start
emitting radiation to be stable, Beta particle is of the type radiation (Graham et al,2012).
This is emitted by radioactive nucleus, the atomic mass number of radioactive nucleus

Thus, z= is atomic mass number of radioactive nucleus
A= Atomic number
X= is radioactive nucleus before emitting
Y= Radioactive nucleus after emitting
Secondly: Alphaparticle produces from the same way of Beta particle; how

Where The Magic s At
Where the Magic s At
Each time spent there is different. The people I m with are different, the conversations, and the
adventures. Whether I m with my extended family, whose first time it was being at Disneyland or with
my cousins and friends from youth group, and doing things I ve never done before. Like riding the
horseless carriage, or going to Toon town and visiting Minnie s house. Then there was a time where
my family had a little vacation and stayed at Disneyland for three days. And then there are the times,
that you make a spontaneous decision with your sisters one summer, and decide to get an annual pass,
to fill your weekends with things to do. I found myself eating at the Carnation café, eating the famous

on who you re with. Sometimes silence fills the air, with its presence. Other times silence doesn t
make itself known. This car ride was different, we chatted away about our favorite rides at
Disneyland, how our winter break has been, and how it had been way too long since we ve last seen
each other. Suddenly silence, showed up but not in the way that we expected. Shortly after, everyone
was closing their eyes and taking a nap, as we realized that we had a long day ahead of us. Upon this,
we arrived at the park at around 8, and were greeted by millions of cars. There were cars from myriads
of different places. Cars from Arizona, Colorado, Utah and even London! After what felt like hours,
we finally found a parking spot at the Goofy structure and headed down to the escalators to get our
bags checked. While we were in line, our older sister pointed out that Cassandra, Grace and I were
matching in our green parkas and grey hoodies. We laughed about the fact that Aylin didn t get the

the front gates of Disneyland Resort.

The Lovely Bones And Middlesex
Throughout The Lovely Bones and Middlesex, Alice Sebold and Jeffrey Eugenides, respectively,
articulate the emotional journeys that both of their characters endure when faced with grief. Although
they bear similarities, such as how both characters are able to move towards the idea of acceptance,
the differences between The Lovely Bones and Middlesex are clear in the paths that each character
takes in the various stages of grief to reach their destination of inner peace. Elisabeth Kübler Ross, a
Swiss American psychiatrist, studied the various stages of grief and describes them as: not linear;
neither are they equal in their experience. People s grief s, and other reactions to emotional trauma, are
as individual as a fingerprint. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The gene is not expressed until it travels three generations down to Calliope Stephanides, the narrator.
She identifies herself as female and is brought up as so until she hits puberty and male traits start
surfacing. These changes lead to the unveiling of Callie s intersex nature. Callie flees out of fear of
rejection and creates a new male identity for herself as Cal, narrates the story in present day as a 41
year old man.
The first step in moving towards acceptance is denial or isolation. Denial is a momentary defence for
oneself when faced with misfortune; it is the refusal to acknowledge the reality of the circumstances at
hand. In The Lovely Bones, Jack s reaction when initially dealing with his daughter s death reflects on
an aspect of grief in which he retreats into himself. As Susie watches over her family, she begins to
watch her father drift away and goes on by saying, By the time my father turned back to the living
room, he was too devastated to reach out to my mother sitting on the carpet or my sister s hardened
form nearby. He could not let them see him (Sebold 29). Jack s response to his daughter s death is a
desire to be alone, not wanting his family so see him as he sees himself; fragile and weak. It is this
isolation that what keeps him from facing the harsh truth of his daughter s murder. He persists that

Essay On Duchenne s Muscular Dystrophy
Duchenne s muscular dystrophy is one of the most common forms over childhood muscular dystrophy
and primarily affects boys; in total there are 30 different forms of muscular dystrophy 50% being
duchenne s muscular dystrophy (NIH, 2013). This type of muscular dystrophy usually begins to show
symptoms around the pre school age and affects the lower extremities first. By the age of twelve, most
boys are in a wheelchair as the trunk muscles being to weaken leading to scoliosis and kyphosis.
Eventually the diaphragm begins to weaken and young men with Duchenne s muscular dystrophy will
need assistance with breathing through the use of a ventilator (Naff, C. 2012). According to the 1st
Edition of Perspectives on Disease and Disorders Muscular Dystrophy by the age of eighteen most
young men would have experienced a cardio myopathy (weakening or the heart muscle) (Naff, C.
2012). Duchenne s muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a chromosome X linked and genetically inherited
neuromuscular disease. The New England Journal of Medicine reports that Duchenne s muscular

Melting Glaciers are Devastating for Wetlands Essay
Melting Glaciers: Great News for Titanic, Devastating for Wetlands Overview This essay is dedicated
to the importance of wetlands and the impending danger of rising sea levels due to global warming.
Historically we humans have taken for granted the numerous vital roles played by wetlands in our
ecosystem and viewed them only as unpleasant and undesirable. So we have destroyed much of our
wetlands, and now that we finally see how important they are we are going to lose what little wetlands
remain to rising sea levels. What are wetlands? Wetlands are, quite simply wet lands. The word
wetlands is the collective term for marshes, swamps, bogs, and similar areas. Here in Florida,
wetlands are quite abundant. They can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, continued use of navigation channels, canals, and flood control levees continue to convert
significant amounts of wetlands to open water by blocking the ability of the wetlands to keep up with
rising sea levels. Back to Contents Why are wetlands important? Wetlands play a vital role in our
intricate Earth system, having a strong effect on all of the different components, especially the
hydrosphere and biosphere. Often, runoff water from uplands is intercepted by wetlands where
pollutants are removed or transformed before reaching the water resources. Wetlands are also
important reservoirs for the watershed, which is the region or area drained by a river, stream, etc.
Wetlands are also useful as a natural protection from flooding, from shore line and stream bank
erosion, and storm damage. The wetlands hold the soil in place with their roots, reduce the velocity of
streams and river currents, and absorb wave energy thus buffering the shorelines against strong waves
from heavy, even tropical storms. More strongly felt, however, is the importance of . Many diverse
species of plants and animals, particularly amphibians, fish and birds depend on wetlands for food
and/or habitat. More than one third of the United States threatened and endangered species depend
solely on wetlands for habitat, while another twenty percent use or inhabit them at

Fellowship Of The Ring Movie And Book Comparison Essay
The Fellowship of the Ring Book/Movie Comparison Written by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of
the Ring was released in 1954; it is the first book in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The plot centers
around a young hobbit, Frodo Baggins, who must embark on a treacherous journey to destroy the One
Ring. He is accompanied by Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Some of the other key characters include
Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Boromir, and Gimli. A movie adaptation was released in 2001. Although it
is tremendously rare, in this case, the movie adaptation more efficiently tells the story than the book.
The book commences with Bilbo Baggins one hundred and eleventh birthday celebration (Tolkien 21
30). At the end of his party, Bilbo announces that he is going to depart. Suddenly, he mysteriously
vanishes, and the crowd is astounded (Tolkien 30). Bilbo quickly runs to his home, grabs his
belongings, and walks out the door, vowing never to return. However, right before he departs, he is
briefly visited by Gandalf the wizard. Gandalf encourages him to leave behind a ring (Tolkien 33 34).
At this point in the story, the reader has no clue about the significance of the ring or ... Show more

However, sometimes this acute detail is unnecessary. For an example: throughout the book, Frodo and
his companions spend a large portion of time wandering through the woods, avoiding the Black Riders
who desire to seize the One Ring from Frodo (Tolkien 70 145). All of this time spent wandering is not
important to the story and can quite quickly make the reader lose interest or become bored. While it is
necessary to show Frodo traveling, it is not necessary to have seventy five pages dedicated to traveling
through the woods. In the movie, the time spent traveling through the woods is very brief (Jackson).
This helps the viewer stay engaged in the story. The movie keeps only the important events, which
gives the viewer an easier understanding of the

Slavery In New Jersey City Essay
No matter what difficulties lay ahead, there was only one goal, to be free. It was the road to freedom;
it was a challenge that needed to be completed. According to The Underground Railroad in Jersey City
written by Carmela Karnoutsos Jersey City was the last station on the Underground Railroad route
through New Jersey. Tens of thousands of fugitive slaves arrived here from several states, such as
Maryland, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. From these states, they traveled to the Delaware
River where they crossed over to New Jersey to continue on to Jersey City. The crossing of the slaves
was in the same area of Jersey City as the Dutch settlement of New Netherlands at Harsimus, where
slavery was introduced in the 1640s. The effects that Jersey City s underground railroad had on former
slaves who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For Jersey City to undergo this event is majorly significant because it is such a small city with such
great history. Slaves/former slaves were traveling the Underground Railroad, the secretive path of safe
houses that led thousands of slaves to freedom in the North before the Emancipation Proclamation of
1863. The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 implies that freeing the slaves in certain territories
were still against the Union. However, the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 did not free all slaves
due to the fact that the proclamation did not cover the states that were slave colonized states. New
Jersey alone had as many as four routes, with all of them coming into Jersey City. Those routes
extended from the Mason and Dixon Line and the Valley of the Ohio on the South, to the Canadian
border on the North. Jersey City played a crucial role in that era being that numerous individuals
passed through the city. As the last stop in New Jersey, even before criminal slaves reached New York;
approximately 60,000 escaped slaves traveled through Jersey

Double Indemnity And Lighting Techniques In 1940 s Film
In any classic 1940 s cinema the most distinct attribute is the use of lighting and lighting techniques.
Although filmed without colour, experiencing budget limitations and technology disadvantages
lighting in film noir exceeded without obstruction. Billy Wilder used many lighting techniques
throughout the production of Double Indemnity, his use of lighting formulated the intended
atmosphere of scenes. The first lighting technique that is presented to the audience is within the
opening credits, an extremely bright backlight casts a man on crutches into a complete shadow. The
ominous figure loiters towards the screen inching closer with every introducing credit, the mysterious
shadow man intimidates the audience with every step. The wounded

Critical Analysis Of Robert Reich s Inequality For All
In the documentary titled Inequality for All , Robert Reich attempts to describe to the audience and his
students reasons for the income inequality found in the United States. Inequality for All showed an
endearing and caring side of Reich, where he made himself seem human and fallible. I found myself
personally enjoying this side of him, the short aging man who, although a Rhodes Scholar drives a
Cooper and holds himself above politics.
After reflection and research, one can quickly see where Mr. Reich uses emotion and imagery to build
a false argument. His attempts to pull the emotional strings of the audience begin with his extreme
shortness caused by a medical affliction. We move to Reich driving an inexpensive car with a manual
transmission. Then we meet a woman having difficulty making ends meet and crying while relating
her story. Reich shows the audience and his students a Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) graph
with a hockey stick curve so sharp it was astounding. I had to pause the film so I could research this
graph as the visual was so extraordinary. I found an online interactive graph of the DJIA using data for
the last 8 or 9 decades. I could not create any data set that produced the theatrical image shown in the
film. This, however, is typical Robert Reich, shocking graphs with no numbers. He just uses them as
pictures to demonstrate an emotional point, never mind there is no substance, just emotion.
Attempting to illustrate the income inequality, we were introduced to the graph showing a U shaped
curve . Reich, Saez and Piketty wanted to present that curve represented income disparity from 1900
to present day. Reich and his cohorts wanted to focus on the timeline of the graph from around 1920 to
1940. It seems this was a time where the income differential was much less than present day and they
want to get back to that time.

Twelfth Night Duality
In Act 1, Scene 2 of Twelfth Night, as Viola lays down her plans before the captain, she speaks about a
major theme of the play: the way a person seems outwardly versus their true self. Viola says she is
aware people cannot be trusted based on their looks, but trusts the captain. She then requests his help
so she can be dressed as a boy for the remainder of the play. The way she behaves also hits on another
theme, the contrast between people that can act as a balance. Through comparison, she can be seen as
a counterbalance to Sebastian in the way they both conduct themselves. The majority of the characters
have a twin of their own to act as a sort of foil. Exploring this passage (1.2.96 108) will help see the
double themes of duality that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As if extending the idea of the twins, Viola and Sebastian, nearly everyone seems to have their
complementary twin. As mentioned earlier, Viola takes charge and makes her own plans while
Sebastian seems to operate on whims. There is also a difference in their outlooks. Viola is easily
assured that her brother may still be alive, while Sebastian is certain his sister is dead. Olivia and
Orsino also act as the counterbalance to one another. While both are absorbed in their own melancholy
moods, Orsino does it for the love he desires and Olivia does it for loved ones she s lost. Despite their
opposing approaches towards wooing, they both end up with a love of their own. Another interesting
counterbalance is between the captain and Antonio. The captain saved Viola, but after accepting
money to help her, he went his separate way, never expressing feelings for her. In contrast, Antonio
rescued Sebastian, then gave him money and followed him, all the while expressing love for him.
Then there is Sir Toby and Malvolio, perhaps two of the most evident opposites in the play because of
the way Malvolio actively opposes Sir Toby. Malvolio is somber and serious. He wants people to
respect him and kisses up to Olivia. Sir Toby, however, is more of a clown than Feste, staying up to all
hours of the night, drinking and carelessly waking the house with his singing. Malvolio does what he
can to seem above his station, but Sir Toby does not worry what others think and often seems below
his station. Though, with a character like Malvolio, finding people to be his opposite is no chore; Feste
and Maria could also work to contrast with him, but Malvolio and Sir Toby s hatred of each other do
seem most

It s Time To Raise Of Pigs In High School
Thanks to the Future Farmers of America there are several reasons to raise a pig during one s years in
high school. However, these motives may be unclear to the naked eye of a visitor. For example, I
managed to befriend a foreign exchange student from Denmark this year and the concept of raising a
pig simply to slaughter it and present its carcass to a crowd of people who would proceed to bid
ridiculous amounts of money with each raise of a card. Though it may seem morbid, this entire
process can be quite beneficial to an average high school student. The very first thing to do when
considering raising a pig is designating a place for it to live during its stay with you. This spot should
have unlimited access to both sunlight and shade, water and food, and some puddles for it to cool off
in would not be too bad. However, the pig should be in a safe environment where it cannot be
scratched by any sharp objects that may cause harm to the product and the ... Show more content on

The carcass is basically the product in this aspect, and therefore must be taken care of. The cuts made
on the meat must be nearly perfect or else it can cost quite a bit of money. At this time you are simply

hacksaw is used to cut the front shoulder off along with the back ham. The front shoulder will then be
used for meat such as sausage that will not be sold. However, the hams are very important and
expensive. The same story goes for the bacons. These two sets of meat can easily bring in over a
thousand dollars. However, at this first session of cutting there is not much you can do aside from

The King Of Thailand s Philosophy Of Sufficient Economy
This paper takes a look at the King of Thailand s philosophy of Sufficiency Economy which contains
a Buddhist belief that stresses the middle path as a prime principle for proper conduct by all levels of
the population. Its application begins from the level of individuals and families through to
communities and the nation itself in terms of development and administration. Thailand was well
known for its agricultural commodities and being one of the world s top rice exporters despite being a
developing country faced with challenges such as economic growth and poverty. The World Bank
coined Thailand as the fastest emerging economy during the latter part of the 1980 s where growth
was stimulated by foreign and domestic investment and borrowing.

The National Education Act 1999 and the Constitution of the Kingdom 1997 urged for a reform in
education and significant changes were made to all levels of education nationally. The reforms in
education focused on improving the quality of teaching practices and had adopted some principles of
the King s philosophy of Sufficient Economy . The King articulated in a 1974 royal speech, If one
focuses only on rapid economic expansion without making sure that such a plan is appropriate for our
people and the condition of our country, it will inevitably result in various imbalances and eventually
end up as failure or crisis in other countries (Cited by He Changchui at International Workshop on

path of conducting a way of life enhancing the development of the whole nation. The King
emphasizes the importance of management in order to ease the country s pains endured from the

Character Analysis Of Mrs. Mallard
Mrs. Mallard: Not the Typical Woman
We are introduced to Kate Chopin s Story of an Hour, in which the central character, Mrs. Mallard,
receives false news of her husband s passing due to a tragic train accident. Mallard represents the
many unprivileged women of her time, bound to a marriage they may or may not be happy with.
Mallard s character is reflected through her peculiar response to the appalling message, as it was not
what one the reader would expect from a woman of Mallard s era. This aspect reveals that not
everything in her life was ideal. Therefore, Chopin must set this character free from the shackles that
chain her to a life in an unhappy marriage and dependency of a housewife on her husband for
everything, by killing her. Chopin could argue that no other solution was accessible for Mrs. Mallard.

Mallard to the news of her husband s death often left readers puzzled as to why she did not break
down into a hysterical crying fit, as expected of a woman who just learned her husband will not be
coming home to her. Chopin s distinctive claim describes Mallard s initial response in a clear, sharp,
manner: She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to
accept its significance. (Chopin 395) Chopin illustrates the idea that Mrs. Mallard was not paralyzed
by the death of her significant other. Rather she accepted it, which strays her persona away from that
of many women who have been in that exact situation. She displays a sign of grief when the news is
freshly given, but as Mallard comes to the realization of a life without the mandatory input or
association of her husband, she eases up and descends to her room and sits in the armchair facing an
open window. She begins to fantasize about life beyond the house in which she has been trapped for
so long, unable to live a life without having her decisions made for her. With her husband out of the

Separate Peace Theme
Law and order is a synonym for peace; however often to obtain peace law and order must be broken.
Though this is true, peace is not all encompassing. Not only can peace can be found in some parts of
life and lacking in others, but peace has many types that affect each part of daily life. A Separate Peace
by John Knowles explores the relationship between external and internal peace. When external
societal peace is disrupted people become willing to commit a kind of suicide by breaking the rules in
an effort to obtain inner peace. Daily life is heavily affected by different forms of peace. External
societal peace, is the peace that is not in an individual s control. For example, war, conflicts in
relationships, and random acts of violence are $$#Break#$$ Many rules that people are forced to
follow violate their own personal values and morals. As a result, when external peace is disrupted
people decide that it is alright to add to the disruption if their values would be upheld through doing
so. The text states, Phineas didn t really dislike West Point in particular or authority in general, but just
considered authority the necessary evil against which happiness was achieved by reaction, the
backboard which returned all the insults he threw at it (11). This quote contradicts the statement that
breaking the rules can enable someone to obtain inner peace because it states that authority returns
some sort of punishment any time you break the rules. This is true, and therefore supports the idea that
breaking the rules is a kind of suicide. In some cases the suicide can be literal. For example, Phineas
insists on jumping off the tree everyday to cope with the war. Surviving the jump everyday causes him
to achieve inner peace because it is a way of getting over his fear of going to the war. This is a literal
suicide because as shown later in the book the jump from the tree is very dangerous and ultimately
killed him. Breaking the rules can also be a metaphorical suicide because even though internal peace
is being met it causes other external peace to be disrupted. According to Merriam Webster dictionary,
the definition of suicide it the act of taking one s own life voluntarily as well as the ruin of one s own
interests. Gene breaks the rules and goes to the beach with Phineas for a night. This is a metaphorical;
kind of suicide because it is against his own interests when he fails his test the next day. Overall, this
illustrates how breaking the rules leads to a kind of

Examples Of Medical Discourse
Medical Discourse
An example of a major discourse operating in the contemporary world is a medical discourse. Frow
states that discourse is a mode of organization of knowledge in relation to material institutions (2005,
pg. 93); some of these institutions include hospitals, government health care, and the World Health
Organization.
Constructs the topic:
According to Hall, discourse is the production of knowledge through language (1997, pg. 44) and it is
through discourse that the topic is constructed. It is because of medical discourse that we have a
universal definition of health and a set of socially accepted rules that dictate how we should talk about
and discuss illness. Medicine is the term we use to describe the science of treating ... Show more

93) which lends itself to the idea that medical interaction is shaped by the context in which it takes
place (Anspach 1988, pg. 358). In a hospital, when doctors or nurses are discussing patients, the
language would usually be technical and clinical, perhaps using abbreviations and slang, and that is
what makes sense in the context of that conversation. However, if a doctor were to be talking to the
patient instead, the language would still be quite scientific but the doctor would likely adjust what they
re saying so the patient can understand them better. Both of these are customary ways of
communicating within the medical discourse and are accepted because of their individual contexts; as
Frow put it, certain regimes of treatment...are legitimized and prevail against others (2005, pg. 12).
However, if a patient went to the hospital and told the doctor they were getting migraines because of a
blockage in their third eye chakra the doctor would assert that that wasn t the case and would then
ascribe the patient s symptoms to a legitimate illness. The fact that the patient thought their illness was
related to their chakras would make sense if they had gone to a naturopath, but in the context of
modern medicine and the medical discourse this seems

Bracero Program Case Study
The Bracero Program was a program designed to accommodate farmers from the U.S. with man
power for the harvesting of the fields while their own men were away from home at war. Furthermore,
this program provided permission for those men coming in from Mexico to continually work in the
U.S. for a total of six months. However, due to the fine print written in on the agreement between
Mexico and the U. S. regarding the Bracero Program, it indicated that the U.S. employers would be
held accountable to providing certain criteria for the Mexican employees during their employment. In
addition, the farmers saw this added incentive as a burden and therefore, looked to less expensive
labor, which meant hiring on those Mexicans who crossed the border illegally.

1. How is Yale s investment philosophy reflected in its strategic asset allocation? Yale s investment
philosophy is one of the critical factors that played into the success of the fund s performance in the
past years. The philosophy is based on 5 principles: focus on equity, diversification, opportunities in
inefficient markets, outside managers and alignment of manager s incentives with Yale s interests. In
the paragraphs below I will discuss how each of these principles is reflected in the endowment s asset
allocation, as shown from Exhibit 1. Yale s belief in equities is reflected through the endowment s
heavy allocation in equity from 1985 2010. The weight allocation, however, is heavier in the earlier
years (1985 1999) than in later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As asset allocation has reached the efficient frontier, the role of having superior fund manager is
becoming more critical. Manager s selection is a factor that differentiates Yale from other
endowments. 3. What are the factors underlying Yale s investment philosophy and process which
account for its successful investment performance? [In other words, in business jargon, what are the
value drivers of the so called Yale model ?] The combination of five factors in Yale s investment
philosophy plays an important role to Yale s successful investment performance. However, among the
five factors, the most critical and non replicable factors are Yale s ability to identify and invest in
inefficient markets and to hire superior managers with aligned incentives; all of which came from
expertise and years of experience in the industry. David Swansen s expertise, in particular, plays a big
role. The success of the model is attributed to Yale s ability to combine both quantitative analysis
(mean variance analysis) with market judgments to structure its portfolio. In addition, Yale also uses
statistical analysis to actively test their models with factors affecting the market, therefore

The Taiping Rebellion In China During The 19th Century
The Taiping Rebellion occurred in China during the 19th century, specifically during the time period
of 1850 1864. It is cited as being the largest and most successful rebellion that occurred during the
19th century. The two forces that were a part of this rebellion were the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom,
also known as the Hakka s, and the Qing dynasty, also known as the Manchus. The main cause of the
rebellion was that Hong Xiuquan, a Hakka and the main leader of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom,
received a vision that he was the brother of Jesus and was sent to overthrow the Qing dynasty. Other
causes included minority rule and economic issues, such as farmers getting overtaxed. In this paper, I
will discuss the goals of the rebellion, revitalization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A messianic movement is a movement that emphasizes the participation of a divine savior in human
flesh in the mazway transformation (Wallace 1956). There is no doubt that the rebellion wasn t a
messianic movement. Xiuquan himself said that he was sent to get rid of the evils. He preached the
Bible to the citizens and told them to abide by a Christian lifestyle. Xiuquan created the Heavenly
Kingdom on earth (Class Notes). This was the capital and the epicenter of the rebellion. The main
focal point of the rebellion. The western world only cared about the Taiping Rebellion because it could
only benefit them after it was all said and done. Western governments only cared if the Taiping s could
have a stable, well planned government to trade with (Gray 72). If the Taiping s could do that, then
western governments would get out all religious restrictions. This was a big issue with the British
Board of Trade, they only wanted to trade with them. Also, Hakka s didn t like you and wanted you

Space Exploration Thesis Statement
Thesis Statement: Space exploration would help achieve a better future, pursuit the economy, and
increase raw material.
Looking down the road, space exploration and the benefits it yields in medicine and information
technology should not be overlooked.
Mars exploration is one of the most important future upcoming concepts for colonization. To pursue
these goals, all of our future missions will be driven by scientific questions that will continuously
evolve as we make new discoveries. New technologies will let us explore mars in ways we have
before, concluding in higher resolution images, and even the return of Martian soil for studies in

Oedipus Complex, Penis Envy, And The Tragedy Of Hamlet
Although it may be a difficult idea to grasp, Shakespeare employed some of Sigmund Freud s
concepts long before Freud himself was even a figment of his ancestor s imagination. Many scholars
discuss Shakespeare s use of the Oedipus complex, penis envy, and many of Sigmund Freud s other
famous concepts and while a proxy family may not be a Freudian concept specifically, it certainly
enables them. Many of Shakespeare s works include a main character who has a strained relationship
with their parent or guardian, but also included in the play is a parental figure, with some conceivably
questionable actions or circumstances, and links can be made, through the text, indicating respectful
relationships between these characters. The concept of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

One may ask, What could have gone so wrong in their relationship to cause Falstaff s close friend to
abandon him? There are many speculations to the cause, including, but not limited to, the idea
stemming from Prince Hal s soliloquy in 1 Henry IV, 1.2.173 195, that in order for others to see or
believe his best, they must first see his worst. Prince Hal s treatment of Falstaff leads one to question
their relationship, introduced in 1 Henry IV. In this relationship one finds the notion that Prince Hal
used Falstaff as a proxy father. The analysis of this concept will be based on textual scenes from The
Norton Shakespeare and Orson Welles film, Falstaff Chimes at Midnight.
The first scene where readers see Falstaff as Prince Hal s proxy father is in Act 2, Scene 5 of 1 Henry
IV. In this scene one reads Falstaff s telling of how he, Gadshill, Peto, and Bardolph were robbed after
they had robbed the travelers. He tells Prince Hal that first there were two robbers, then four, seven,
nine, and finally eleven. From the beginning of the play, readers can tell what kind of character
Falstaff is; he was never endowed with great possessions, respect, or status like Prince Hal, so his
stories were a way to get attention, even if it was because the others were laughing at his
ridiculousness. As Falstaff s story becomes even wilder Prince Hal becomes more incredulous, not
believing how exaggerated the story has become, and is evident in Welles Falstaff Chimes at

Sir Thomas More s Utopia Chapter 1
Sir Thomas More, in his book, Utopia , dives into the thought of a perfect world. More contrast the
fallacies in which his society lives on to those of a functional society described by Raphael Hythloday,
an explorer and philosopher. Divided into two parts, I will be discussing a major issue asserted in
Book I: the just and unjust treatment of thieves , and how we can change our treatment of inmates in
today s world in a way that brings more good than harm by making inmates do communal work
instead of having them uselessly locked up in a cell. The beginning of book I is a reflective and
indulging conversation between More, Peter Gile, a close friend of More, and Raphael Hythloday.
Throughout their conversation, Hythloday illustrates his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He mentions how kings make their servants useless by making them do effortless and impractical
tasks, so when they are too old to continue their service they go broke, hopeless, and hungry. This
leads them to theft. Hythloday mentions, [Noblemen and kings] carry about them a great number of
idle fellows, who never learned any art by which they may gain their living , which causes them to
steal when they have nothing to eat (CITE7). Furthermore, he describes how noblemen take away
farm land from the settlers and then inflate the prices of food, and what can those who are dismissed
by them do, but either beg or rob? (CITE10). More here is trying to say that bad governing creates
these thieves that later go on to be hanged unfairly due to the cause of kings and noblemen doings,
what else can be concluded from this, but that [kings and noblemen] first make thieves and then
punish them? (CITE11). This concept is rather interesting because it makes us think that maybe the
greed of our leaders, as well as ours, create these thieves and criminals in the first place. For instance,
war, in which Hythloday also concludes that war is never good to either side, creates these criminals,
and we can see it in today s world too. The invasion of nations creates tension and aggressiveness,
which creates enemies, or terrorists as we might call them, but in reality, we were the ones that created

Ode To A Grecian Urn Essay
A non static immobility of human world; in the light of Ode on a Grecian Urn
Mavra Tanveer, Anam Kanwal, Maratab Abid, Sumera Batool
Abstract
This research paper studies the mortality of human world and the immortality of art via the poem Ode
to a Grecian Urn . In this paper, we study the difference between imagination and reality through
human sculpture on Urn. People in art are frozen perfectly but the living individuals are imperfect.
Keywords: Paradox, sensual imagery, binary opposition, mortality and immortality.

He juxtaposes the mortality of man with the immortality of art. He through sculpture sees the picture
of reality via imagination as if were alive. He used to flight away in a world of imagination but comes
back in reality; as an alarm clock wakes us up from the world of dreams. He in this poem wants to tell
about the still immobility of a man through art. The urn passes through many ages without dying. It is
alien to all ideas and concepts. It forms a paradox for the human beings in the side of urn. People are
immortal but the art described by the poet shows the people frozen in time. As doth eternity
People on a urn haven t confront aging and death and are forever young. He examines the picture of a
piper who is playing to his lover. Keats has escaped from the reality that his love is undying. The

Four Major Sects Of Judaism Essay
Judaism of the second temple period, from the fifth century BC to the first century AD, is key to
understanding Jesus life and work (Wenham Walton, 2011, p. 25). Maintaining their identity, socially
and religiously, was intrinsic to their existence after their release from captivity. Core beliefs and
practices remained, but over time, varying understandings of how to live out their faith life became
evident among various groups. This essay will define the purpose of the synagogue in 1st century of
Judaism, describe the characteristics and beliefs of four major sects of Judaism, and describe their
expectations regarding the coming of the Messiah.
The purpose of the synagogue was a meeting place for worship that focused primarily on reading of
the Torah and prayer. During the time of the Babylonian exile, temple worship was not possible. ...

43). While there were a number of groups who fell into this category, true zealots were those
attributed to the Jewish War from 66 AD forward who were committed to violent revolution against
the Romans (Wenham Walton, 2011, p. 43).
A number of pieces of literature exist that coincide with the awaited messiah as noted above. The
Pharisees anticipated a messiah of earthly king stature, and militarily he may purge Jerusalem from
nations that trample her down [Pss Sol. 17:23f] (Wenham Walton, 2011, p. 38). However, the Essenes
beliefs resonate closely with the following passage: They shall depart from none of the counsels of the
law to walk in the stubbornness of their hearts (...) until there shall come the Prophet and the Messiahs
of Aaron and Israel [1QS 9:10f] (Wenham Walton, 2011, p. 38).
Defined by their past, Jews in the 1st century fought to maintain their core identity. However, there
were differences in beliefs causing the formation of a number of dominant sects within

Human-Less Warriors Essay
As bloody wars drag on in Iraq and Afghanistan the United States military increasingly turns to human
less warriors to stem the loss of lives. The MQ 1 Predator and MQ 9 Reaper aerial drones are seeing
an increase in use, while remote controlled robots are being used to dispose of improvised explosive
devises. At what point do these computer systems move from machines capable of unethical actions,
to machines whose very existence is unethical? I argue that fully automated systems should not be
used in an offensive manner; rather they can only see ethical uses in limited defensive roles. In
exploring this question I will draw on the only fully autonomous US armed forces weapon system I
am aware of, the Phalanx CIWS, a missile defense system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Phalanx checks that the missile is coming toward the ship, it does this to avoid shooting down friendly
missiles. It checks to see if the missile is able to hit the ship, based on its speed and heading. It also
checks to see if the missile fits within a velocity bracket in which missiles tend to fall. These are not
an exhaustive list of fail safes to ensure Phalanx only engages enemy projectiles, however it gives an
idea of the design thinking behind the system.
I believe that Phalanx CIWS falls into the third category presented in Who s in Charge of the Chip?,
that category being machines capable of harmful consequences. I believe it falls into this one by the
process of elimination, it isn t designed with a malicious intent, quite the opposite, its intent is to
protect. Secondly, it seems to have been designed with safety in mind as there are a battery of
conditions that must be fulfilled in order for the gun to fire. This leaves only the third category as a
possibility. As I am about to show the Phalanx has been shown capable of causing bad consequences. I
found two instances where a Phalanx system has acted in a way we would deem undesirable. First, in
February 1991, during the First Gulf War, a Phalanx system aboard the frigate USS Jarrett fired upon
the battleship USS Missouri. The ships were around three miles apart when they fell under attack from
an Iraqi missile.

Fox says, I d rather die naked and freezing than come here for protection (Boyden, pg 354) which
shows that Fox would rather die with absolutely nothing then live with the crows, their allies. In what
world does one not ask or accept help from their allies? Obviously in a proud and arrogant one. After
the Wendat had been decimated by the smallpox outbreak, they kept to themselves even more than
before. Another example of how the Wendat s pride causes issues is when Bird is negotiating peace
with the Iroquois he loses the Wampum. Instead of asking for forgiveness, he decides to go into battle.
Bird states, our story meant for these people who are our enemy, has been lost...I now know that the
course we are on...is a course of warfare. (Boyden, page 108) Bird does not even consider reasoning
with them or holding negotiations. The Wendat pride has caused its people many issues and ultimately
their own unfortunate demise. Though the Wendat were not solely responsible for their extirpation,
they played a large part of what happened to them because of how they were arrogant and chose to
disrespect those who wished to help them. Another factor that led to the demise of the Wendat people
is because they chose to ignore the pleas of their people and the prophetic dreams that warned them.
They also became entranced by the wealth the Europeans had to offer, so much so that they began to
shape their way of life around it. With all the problems the Wendat faced, it is a miracle that there are

Not Having Kids Research Paper
My mom has constantly shared snippets of stories from her past with me, so I have been given a

journey to be having my sister and me.
It wasn t until my mom was in her early thirties that she even considered having kids. Before then, she
had gone through her life with the idea of not having kids at all. That changed when a few of her

Development Of The Sports Broadcasting
Can you imagine a world in which the only way you could view a sporting event was if you actually

development of the Sports Broadcasting industry and more importantly the rights and regulations
associated with the industry set the pace to allow the world of sports media to advance to the point it is
at today. The main steps that were taken in this advancement include the development of technology,
the development of the Sports Broadcasting Act, and most importantly the progression of case law

This invention caused the sports broadcasting industry to explode, because in May of 1939 Princeton
and Columbia s baseball teams participated in the first nationally televised sporting event. From that
point on sports were changed forever, opening the doors for professional sports teams to capitalize on
the potential revenue that the broadcasting rights of their games could generate. Now that this business
was booming, the only issue was that it had no regulation outside of The Sherman Act. The Sherman
Act is a piece of legislation that prevents monopolies from forming and it helps competition continue
to thrive and be present in all markets. So this lack of regulation caused fans to be very limited in
terms of what teams they could watch play. In most cases, fans were only able to watch their home
team, which left few options for the fans, left little room for universal growth for the NFL, and most
importantly was breaking the antitrust laws. This issue of breaking antitrust laws is the most
prominent legal issue involved in broadcasting rights, and it had to be resolved in order to keep the
professional leagues from collapsing. Well, this issue came to a head in two court cases that will be
discussed in the case law portion of this piece. The result of these cases brought about the birth of the
Sports Broadcasting Act in 1961. The Sports Broadcasting Act, gave professional sports

The Hubble Space Telescope is one of the most amazing machines in orbit right now. In 1946, an

clearer images that are even far from earth than any ground telescope. This idea was very extravagant
because no one had yet launched a rocket into outer space. As the US space program excelled quickly
over the early years, Spitzer lobbied NASA and Congress to develop a space telescope. In 1975, the
European Space Agency and NASA began to develop the telescope that would change astronomy for

Walt Disney Case Analysis
The Walt Disney Company (DIS) is a well known entertainment and media powerhouse. While its two
most iconic theme parks are located within the US, the company also has parks in France, Japan, and
Hong Kong among other places. The media sector of Disney consists of some of the biggest names in
entertainment. Aside from its namesake Disney outlet, Disney is also the parent company of ESPN,
Lucas Films Ltd., ABC Network, and Marvel Studios. From a broader perspective, Disney seems
poised to make investors happy. While cord cutting (moving from tradition tv to online streaming
services) along with a decrease in subscribers to its ESPN network has hurt the company, recent
moves to enter the media streaming services segment seem promising. In addition, the current
government administration has announced plans to reduce the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20%.
The new administration has also proposed a way for companies to bring in overseas profits without
being taxed. This of course is good news for Disney and its international operations. With a market
cap of $151.4 billion, Disney is without a doubt a large cap stock. Its beta of 1.34 indicates it is 34%
more volatile than the market. However, this also points to higher potential returns. While Disney s
dividend yield of 1.59% isn t the most impressive, it signifies that the companies is reinvesting its
earnings into other business ventures which would reward investors with capital gains. With a PE ratio
of 17.34,

  • 2. Space 170 Bi Fall 2016 Grant Robbins Astronomy 170 BI Fall 2016 Actually observing the sky through the campus Steward Observatory telescope brought perspective to just how lucky we are in Tucson to have such amazing resources to study the sky. The location of the telescope is amazing; right in the middle of our historic campus which allows the general public accessibility to something that might otherwise be reserved for astronomers or scientists. Having a 21 telescope to view the night sky expands the field of view that wouldn t be as wide ranging with an ordinary telescope. Having looked through telescopes that were probably 4.5 previously, I wasn t really sure what to expect looking through a scientific version. Clear weather in late November and having a night sky ordinance in Tucson also allows optimum viewing opportunities year round. Thanks to a local ordinance that strictly limits artificial light pollution, Tucson supposedly has the darkest night skies of any city its size in the country. Seeing Stars in Tucson s Brilliant Night Sky. The Washington Post. WP Company, n.d. Web. 05 Dec. 2016. For a city of 500,000, Tucson is an astonishingly good place for stargazing. I was already aware that the magnification quality of the telescope influences exactly what is visible through the eyepiece. Knowing a telescope s optical system captures an image like a camera lens. I realized my eyes had to adjust to the dark. At first I had a difficult time seeing things until I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Symptoms And Treatment Of Cancer Patients 1.Introduction: The numbers of people who are dying due to crucial diseases such as cancer have increased, according to world health organization (WHO) cited in Jane et al (2008), in 2005, 7.6 million people died from cancer, a figure expected to increase to 9 million people by 2015 , and increasing further to 11.4 million dying in 2030. Therefore, scientists have attempted to find appropriate solution for those problems. Since the nineteenth century, solutions have been introduced by scientists, that use radiation for the diagnosis of diseases instead of surgery (Pope, 1999), which has led to great advances in medicine because diagnostic technology such as CT and X rays scanning, nuclear medicine (PET) and mammography, ... Whether I m with my extended family, whose first time it was being at Disneyland or with my cousins and friends from youth group, and doing things I ve never done before. Like riding the horseless carriage, or going to Toon town and visiting Minnie s house. Then there was a time where my family had a little vacation and stayed at Disneyland for three days. Car rides at times can be awkward depending on who you re with. Sometimes silence fills the air, with its presence. Other times silence doesn t make itself known. This car ride was different, we chatted away about our favorite rides at Disneyland, how our winter break has been, and how it had been way too long since we ve last seen each other. Suddenly silence, showed up but not in the way that we expected. Shortly after, everyone was closing their eyes and taking a nap, as we realized that we had a long day ahead of us. Upon this, we arrived at the park at around 8, and were greeted by millions of cars. There were cars from myriads of different places. Cars from Arizona, Colorado, Utah and even London! After what felt like hours, we finally found a parking spot at the Goofy structure and headed down to the escalators to get our bags checked. While we were in line, our older sister pointed out that Cassandra, Grace and I were matching in our green parkas and grey hoodies. We laughed about the fact that Aylin didn t get the memo as she was donning a brown leather jacket. Thereafter, we embarked on the tram that took us to the front gates of Disneyland Resort. • 6. The Lovely Bones And Middlesex Throughout The Lovely Bones and Middlesex, Alice Sebold and Jeffrey Eugenides, respectively, articulate the emotional journeys that both of their characters endure when faced with grief. Although they bear similarities, such as how both characters are able to move towards the idea of acceptance, the differences between The Lovely Bones and Middlesex are clear in the paths that each character takes in the various stages of grief to reach their destination of inner peace. Elisabeth Kübler Ross, a Swiss American psychiatrist, studied the various stages of grief and describes them as: not linear; neither are they equal in their experience. The gene is not expressed until it travels three generations down to Calliope Stephanides, the narrator. She identifies herself as female and is brought up as so until she hits puberty and male traits start surfacing. These changes lead to the unveiling of Callie s intersex nature. Callie flees out of fear of rejection and creates a new male identity for herself as Cal, narrates the story in present day as a 41 year old man. The first step in moving towards acceptance is denial or isolation. Denial is a momentary defence for oneself when faced with misfortune; it is the refusal to acknowledge the reality of the circumstances at hand. In The Lovely Bones, Jack s reaction when initially dealing with his daughter s death reflects on an aspect of grief in which he retreats into himself. As Susie watches over her family, she begins to watch her father drift away and goes on by saying, By the time my father turned back to the living room, he was too devastated to reach out to my mother sitting on the carpet or my sister s hardened form nearby. He could not let them see him (Sebold 29). Jack s response to his daughter s death is a desire to be alone, not wanting his family so see him as he sees himself; fragile and weak. It is this isolation that what keeps him from facing the harsh truth of his daughter s murder. He persists that Nothing is ever certain (Sebold 22) and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Melting Glaciers are Devastating for Wetlands Essay Melting Glaciers: Great News for Titanic, Devastating for Wetlands Overview This essay is dedicated to the importance of wetlands and the impending danger of rising sea levels due to global warming. Historically we humans have taken for granted the numerous vital roles played by wetlands in our ecosystem and viewed them only as unpleasant and undesirable. So we have destroyed much of our wetlands, and now that we finally see how important they are we are going to lose what little wetlands remain to rising sea levels. What are wetlands? Wetlands are, quite simply wet lands. The word wetlands is the collective term for marshes, swamps, bogs, and similar areas. Here in Florida, wetlands are quite abundant. They can ... However, continued use of navigation channels, canals, and flood control levees continue to convert significant amounts of wetlands to open water by blocking the ability of the wetlands to keep up with rising sea levels. Back to Contents Why are wetlands important? Wetlands play a vital role in our intricate Earth system, having a strong effect on all of the different components, especially the hydrosphere and biosphere. Often, runoff water from uplands is intercepted by wetlands where pollutants are removed or transformed before reaching the water resources. Wetlands are also important reservoirs for the watershed, which is the region or area drained by a river, stream, etc. Wetlands are also useful as a natural protection from flooding, from shore line and stream bank erosion, and storm damage. The wetlands hold the soil in place with their roots, reduce the velocity of streams and river currents, and absorb wave energy thus buffering the shorelines against strong waves from heavy, even tropical storms. More strongly felt, however, is the importance of . Many diverse species of plants and animals, particularly amphibians, fish and birds depend on wetlands for food and/or habitat. • 9. Fellowship Of The Ring Movie And Book Comparison Essay The Fellowship of the Ring Book/Movie Comparison Written by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 1954; it is the first book in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The plot centers around a young hobbit, Frodo Baggins, who must embark on a treacherous journey to destroy the One Ring. He is accompanied by Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Some of the other key characters include Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Boromir, and Gimli. A movie adaptation was released in 2001. Although it is tremendously rare, in this case, the movie adaptation more efficiently tells the story than the book. The book commences with Bilbo Baggins one hundred and eleventh birthday celebration (Tolkien 21 30). At the end of his party, Bilbo announces that he is going to depart. Suddenly, he mysteriously vanishes, and the crowd is astounded (Tolkien 30). Bilbo quickly runs to his home, grabs his belongings, and walks out the door, vowing never to return. However, right before he departs, he is briefly visited by Gandalf the wizard. Gandalf encourages him to leave behind a ring (Tolkien 33 34). For an example: throughout the book, Frodo and his companions spend a large portion of time wandering through the woods, avoiding the Black Riders who desire to seize the One Ring from Frodo (Tolkien 70 145). All of this time spent wandering is not important to the story and can quite quickly make the reader lose interest or become bored. While it is necessary to show Frodo traveling, it is not necessary to have seventy five pages dedicated to traveling through the woods. In the movie, the time spent traveling through the woods is very brief (Jackson). This helps the viewer stay engaged in the story. The movie keeps only the important events, which gives the viewer an easier understanding of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Slavery In New Jersey City Essay No matter what difficulties lay ahead, there was only one goal, to be free. It was the road to freedom; it was a challenge that needed to be completed. According to The Underground Railroad in Jersey City written by Carmela Karnoutsos Jersey City was the last station on the Underground Railroad route through New Jersey. Tens of thousands of fugitive slaves arrived here from several states, such as Maryland, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. From these states, they traveled to the Delaware River where they crossed over to New Jersey to continue on to Jersey City. The crossing of the slaves was in the same area of Jersey City as the Dutch settlement of New Netherlands at Harsimus, where slavery was introduced in the 1640s. The effects that Jersey City s underground railroad had on former slaves who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For Jersey City to undergo this event is majorly significant because it is such a small city with such great history. Slaves/former slaves were traveling the Underground Railroad, the secretive path of safe houses that led thousands of slaves to freedom in the North before the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 implies that freeing the slaves in certain territories were still against the Union. However, the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 did not free all slaves due to the fact that the proclamation did not cover the states that were slave colonized states. New Jersey alone had as many as four routes, with all of them coming into Jersey City. Those routes extended from the Mason and Dixon Line and the Valley of the Ohio on the South, to the Canadian border on the North. Jersey City played a crucial role in that era being that numerous individuals passed through the city. • 12. Critical Analysis Of Robert Reich s Inequality For All In the documentary titled Inequality for All , Robert Reich attempts to describe to the audience and his students reasons for the income inequality found in the United States. Inequality for All showed an endearing and caring side of Reich, where he made himself seem human and fallible. I found myself personally enjoying this side of him, the short aging man who, although a Rhodes Scholar drives a Cooper and holds himself above politics. After reflection and research, one can quickly see where Mr. Reich uses emotion and imagery to build a false argument. His attempts to pull the emotional strings of the audience begin with his extreme shortness caused by a medical affliction. We move to Reich driving an inexpensive car with a manual transmission. Then we meet a woman having difficulty making ends meet and crying while relating her story. Reich shows the audience and his students a Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) graph with a hockey stick curve so sharp it was astounding. I had to pause the film so I could research this graph as the visual was so extraordinary. I found an online interactive graph of the DJIA using data for the last 8 or 9 decades. I could not create any data set that produced the theatrical image shown in the film. This, however, is typical Robert Reich, shocking graphs with no numbers. He just uses them as pictures to demonstrate an emotional point, never mind there is no substance, just emotion. Attempting to illustrate the income inequality, we were introduced to the graph showing a U shaped curve . Reich, Saez and Piketty wanted to present that curve represented income disparity from 1900 to present day. Reich and his cohorts wanted to focus on the timeline of the graph from around 1920 to 1940. It seems this was a time where the income differential was much less than present day and they want to get back to that time. News flash gentlemen, that was the World War I and Great Depression era. Capital was devalued or lost at such a tremendous level, we developed a capitalized name for it. We teach school children of these times, but the documentary seems to ignore or gloss over it. • 13. Twelfth Night Duality In Act 1, Scene 2 of Twelfth Night, as Viola lays down her plans before the captain, she speaks about a major theme of the play: the way a person seems outwardly versus their true self. Viola says she is aware people cannot be trusted based on their looks, but trusts the captain. She then requests his help so she can be dressed as a boy for the remainder of the play. The way she behaves also hits on another theme, the contrast between people that can act as a balance. Through comparison, she can be seen as a counterbalance to Sebastian in the way they both conduct themselves. The majority of the characters have a twin of their own to act as a sort of foil. Exploring this passage (1.2.96 108) will help see the double themes of duality that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As if extending the idea of the twins, Viola and Sebastian, nearly everyone seems to have their complementary twin. As mentioned earlier, Viola takes charge and makes her own plans while Sebastian seems to operate on whims. There is also a difference in their outlooks. Viola is easily assured that her brother may still be alive, while Sebastian is certain his sister is dead. Olivia and Orsino also act as the counterbalance to one another. While both are absorbed in their own melancholy moods, Orsino does it for the love he desires and Olivia does it for loved ones she s lost. Despite their opposing approaches towards wooing, they both end up with a love of their own. Another interesting counterbalance is between the captain and Antonio. The captain saved Viola, but after accepting money to help her, he went his separate way, never expressing feelings for her. In contrast, Antonio rescued Sebastian, then gave him money and followed him, all the while expressing love for him. Then there is Sir Toby and Malvolio, perhaps two of the most evident opposites in the play because of the way Malvolio actively opposes Sir Toby. Malvolio is somber and serious. He wants people to respect him and kisses up to Olivia. Sir Toby, however, is more of a clown than Feste, staying up to all hours of the night, drinking and carelessly waking the house with his singing. Malvolio does what he can to seem above his station, but Sir Toby does not worry what others think and often seems below his station. • 14. It s Time To Raise Of Pigs In High School Thanks to the Future Farmers of America there are several reasons to raise a pig during one s years in high school. However, these motives may be unclear to the naked eye of a visitor. For example, I managed to befriend a foreign exchange student from Denmark this year and the concept of raising a pig simply to slaughter it and present its carcass to a crowd of people who would proceed to bid ridiculous amounts of money with each raise of a card. Though it may seem morbid, this entire process can be quite beneficial to an average high school student. The very first thing to do when considering raising a pig is designating a place for it to live during its stay with you. This spot should have unlimited access to both sunlight and shade, water and food, and some puddles for it to cool off in would not be too bad. However, the pig should be in a safe environment where it cannot be scratched by any sharp objects that may cause harm to the product and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The King Of Thailand s Philosophy Of Sufficient Economy This paper takes a look at the King of Thailand s philosophy of Sufficiency Economy which contains a Buddhist belief that stresses the middle path as a prime principle for proper conduct by all levels of the population. Its application begins from the level of individuals and families through to communities and the nation itself in terms of development and administration. Thailand was well known for its agricultural commodities and being one of the world s top rice exporters despite being a developing country faced with challenges such as economic growth and poverty. The King articulated in a 1974 royal speech, If one focuses only on rapid economic expansion without making sure that such a plan is appropriate for our people and the condition of our country, it will inevitably result in various imbalances and eventually end up as failure or crisis in other countries (Cited by He Changchui at International Workshop on Sufficiency Economy on 27 July 2006). • 16. Character Analysis Of Mrs. Mallard Mrs. Mallard: Not the Typical Woman We are introduced to Kate Chopin s Story of an Hour, in which the central character, Mrs. Mallard, receives false news of her husband s passing due to a tragic train accident. Mallard represents the many unprivileged women of her time, bound to a marriage they may or may not be happy with. Mallard s character is reflected through her peculiar response to the appalling message, as it was not what one the reader would expect from a woman of Mallard s era. This aspect reveals that not everything in her life was ideal. Therefore, Chopin must set this character free from the shackles that chain her to a life in an unhappy marriage and dependency of a housewife on her husband for everything, by killing her. Chopin could argue that no other solution was accessible for Mrs. Mallard. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mallard to the news of her husband s death often left readers puzzled as to why she did not break down into a hysterical crying fit, as expected of a woman who just learned her husband will not be coming home to her. Chopin s distinctive claim describes Mallard s initial response in a clear, sharp, manner: She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. (Chopin 395) Chopin illustrates the idea that Mrs. Mallard was not paralyzed by the death of her significant other. Rather she accepted it, which strays her persona away from that of many women who have been in that exact situation. She displays a sign of grief when the news is freshly given, but as Mallard comes to the realization of a life without the mandatory input or association of her husband, she eases up and descends to her room and sits in the armchair facing an open window. She begins to fantasize about life beyond the house in which she has been trapped for so long, unable to live a life without having her decisions made for her. • 17. Separate Peace Theme Law and order is a synonym for peace; however often to obtain peace law and order must be broken. Though this is true, peace is not all encompassing. Not only can peace can be found in some parts of life and lacking in others, but peace has many types that affect each part of daily life. A Separate Peace by John Knowles explores the relationship between external and internal peace. When external societal peace is disrupted people become willing to commit a kind of suicide by breaking the rules in an effort to obtain inner peace. Daily life is heavily affected by different forms of peace. External societal peace, is the peace that is not in an individual s control. For example, war, conflicts in relationships, and random acts of violence are $$#Break#$$ Many rules that people are forced to follow violate their own personal values and morals. As a result, when external peace is disrupted people decide that it is alright to add to the disruption if their values would be upheld through doing so. The text states, Phineas didn t really dislike West Point in particular or authority in general, but just considered authority the necessary evil against which happiness was achieved by reaction, the backboard which returned all the insults he threw at it (11). This quote contradicts the statement that breaking the rules can enable someone to obtain inner peace because it states that authority returns some sort of punishment any time you break the rules. This is true, and therefore supports the idea that breaking the rules is a kind of suicide. In some cases the suicide can be literal. For example, Phineas insists on jumping off the tree everyday to cope with the war. Surviving the jump everyday causes him to achieve inner peace because it is a way of getting over his fear of going to the war. This is a literal suicide because as shown later in the book the jump from the tree is very dangerous and ultimately killed him. Breaking the rules can also be a metaphorical suicide because even though internal peace is being met it causes other external peace to be disrupted. According to Merriam Webster dictionary, the definition of suicide it the act of taking one s own life voluntarily as well as the ruin of one s own interests. Gene breaks the rules and goes to the beach with Phineas for a night. This is a metaphorical; kind of suicide because it is against his own interests when he fails his test the next day. In a hospital, when doctors or nurses are discussing patients, the language would usually be technical and clinical, perhaps using abbreviations and slang, and that is what makes sense in the context of that conversation. However, if a doctor were to be talking to the patient instead, the language would still be quite scientific but the doctor would likely adjust what they re saying so the patient can understand them better. Both of these are customary ways of communicating within the medical discourse and are accepted because of their individual contexts; as Frow put it, certain regimes of treatment...are legitimized and prevail against others (2005, pg. 12). However, if a patient went to the hospital and told the doctor they were getting migraines because of a blockage in their third eye chakra the doctor would assert that that wasn t the case and would then ascribe the patient s symptoms to a legitimate illness. The fact that the patient thought their illness was related to their chakras would make sense if they had gone to a naturopath, but in the context of modern medicine and the medical discourse this seems ... In the paragraphs below I will discuss how each of these principles is reflected in the endowment s asset allocation, as shown from Exhibit 1. However, among the five factors, the most critical and non replicable factors are Yale s ability to identify and invest in inefficient markets and to hire superior managers with aligned incentives; all of which came from expertise and years of experience in the industry. David Swansen s expertise, in particular, plays a big role. There are many speculations to the cause, including, but not limited to, the idea stemming from Prince Hal s soliloquy in 1 Henry IV, 1.2.173 195, that in order for others to see or believe his best, they must first see his worst. Prince Hal s treatment of Falstaff leads one to question their relationship, introduced in 1 Henry IV. In this relationship one finds the notion that Prince Hal used Falstaff as a proxy father. The analysis of this concept will be based on textual scenes from The Norton Shakespeare and Orson Welles film, Falstaff Chimes at Midnight. The first scene where readers see Falstaff as Prince Hal s proxy father is in Act 2, Scene 5 of 1 Henry IV. In this scene one reads Falstaff s telling of how he, Gadshill, Peto, and Bardolph were robbed after they had robbed the travelers. He tells Prince Hal that first there were two robbers, then four, seven, nine, and finally eleven. From the beginning of the play, readers can tell what kind of character Falstaff is; he was never endowed with great possessions, respect, or status like Prince Hal, so his stories were a way to get attention, even if it was because the others were laughing at his ridiculousness. These are not an exhaustive list of fail safes to ensure Phalanx only engages enemy projectiles, however it gives an idea of the design thinking behind the system. I believe that Phalanx CIWS falls into the third category presented in Who s in Charge of the Chip?, that category being machines capable of harmful consequences. I believe it falls into this one by the process of elimination, it isn t designed with a malicious intent, quite the opposite, its intent is to protect. Secondly, it seems to have been designed with safety in mind as there are a battery of conditions that must be fulfilled in order for the gun to fire. This leaves only the third category as a possibility. As I am about to show the Phalanx has been shown capable of causing bad consequences. • 34. Development Of The Sports Broadcasting Can you imagine a world in which the only way you could view a sporting event was if you actually attended the game in person? Well, that s how the world used to be at the turn of the 20th century. The development of the Sports Broadcasting industry and more importantly the rights and regulations associated with the industry set the pace to allow the world of sports media to advance to the point it is at today. The main steps that were taken in this advancement include the development of technology, the development of the Sports Broadcasting Act, and most importantly the progression of case law involving sports broadcasting rights through the reviewing of many cases. In order to be able to grasp how sports broadcasting rights became how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This invention caused the sports broadcasting industry to explode, because in May of 1939 Princeton and Columbia s baseball teams participated in the first nationally televised sporting event. From that point on sports were changed forever, opening the doors for professional sports teams to capitalize on the potential revenue that the broadcasting rights of their games could generate. Now that this business was booming, the only issue was that it had no regulation outside of The Sherman Act. The Sherman Act is a piece of legislation that prevents monopolies from forming and it helps competition continue to thrive and be present in all markets. So this lack of regulation caused fans to be very limited in terms of what teams they could watch play. In most cases, fans were only able to watch their home team, which left few options for the fans, left little room for universal growth for the NFL, and most importantly was breaking the antitrust laws. This issue of breaking antitrust laws is the most prominent legal issue involved in broadcasting rights, and it had to be resolved in order to keep the professional leagues from collapsing. Well, this issue came to a head in two court cases that will be discussed in the case law portion of this piece. The result of these cases brought about the birth of the Sports Broadcasting Act in 1961. The Sports Broadcasting Act, gave professional sports ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Essay on Hubble Telescope The Hubble Space Telescope is one of the most amazing machines in orbit right now. In 1946, an astrophysicist named Dr. Lyman Spitzer proposed that a telescope in space would reveal better and clearer images that are even far from earth than any ground telescope. This idea was very extravagant because no one had yet launched a rocket into outer space. As the US space program excelled quickly over the early years, Spitzer lobbied NASA and Congress to develop a space telescope. In 1975, the European Space Agency and NASA began to develop the telescope that would change astronomy for ever. In 1977, Congress approved funding for the development of the space telescope and NASA named Lockheed Martin Aerospace Company as the prime contractor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scientists came up with a solution to correct the defect in which they came up with a replacement contact lens called COSTAR. The Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement consisted of several minute mirrors that would intercept the beam of the flawed mirror and relay the corrected beam to the scientific instruments at the focus of the mirror. The Hubble telescope is a compound telescope design where light enters the telescope through the opening and bounces off the primary mirror to a secondary mirror. Then the secondary mirror reflects the light through a hole in the center of the primary mirror to a focal point behind the primary mirror. At the focal point, half transparent mirrors distribute the light to the various scientific instruments. The Hubble Telescope mirrors are made of glass and coated with multiple layers of pure aluminum that are three millionths of an inch thick and a coat of magnesium fluoride that is one millionth of an inch thick to make them reflect visible, infra red and ultraviolet light. The primary mirror weighs 1825 pounds and the secondary mirror weighs in at 27.4 pounds. By looking at the different wavelengths or the spectrum of light from a celestial object, you can tell many of its properties and features. To do this, the Hubble Telescope is equipped with various scientific instruments. Each instrument used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Walt Disney Case Analysis The Walt Disney Company (DIS) is a well known entertainment and media powerhouse. While its two most iconic theme parks are located within the US, the company also has parks in France, Japan, and Hong Kong among other places. The media sector of Disney consists of some of the biggest names in entertainment. Aside from its namesake Disney outlet, Disney is also the parent company of ESPN, Lucas Films Ltd., ABC Network, and Marvel Studios. From a broader perspective, Disney seems poised to make investors happy. While cord cutting (moving from tradition tv to online streaming services) along with a decrease in subscribers to its ESPN network has hurt the company, recent moves to enter the media streaming services segment seem promising. In addition, the current government administration has announced plans to reduce the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20%. The new administration has also proposed a way for companies to bring in overseas profits without being taxed. This of course is good news for Disney and its international operations. With a market cap of $151.4 billion, Disney is without a doubt a large cap stock. Its beta of 1.34 indicates it is 34% more volatile than the market. However, this also points to higher potential returns. While Disney s dividend yield of 1.59% isn t the most impressive, it signifies that the companies is reinvesting its earnings into other business ventures which would reward investors with capital gains.
