2. Finding Inspiration
When researching magazines and
looking into the genre of Indie
Alternative I noticed the variety in
mise en scene. I wanted to create
my own photos that have very
interesting and appropriate mise en
scene. In order to effectively do this
I have researched photoshoots and
different locations that occur in the
image of different alternative artists
to ensure I can appeal to my target
market.
3. White Plain Background
Featuring: The 1975, Imagine Dragons, James Bay and Bjork.
I think a white background is effective as it reflects the alternative genre of standing out just as
the way a figure stands out on a white background. The lighting differs in the images, a high
exposure high light gives a more thoughtful final image whereas the lower lighting reveals
shadows and interprets a casual and relaxed feel to the photo. I like this minimal mise en scene
and I will include it in my magazine, this will be effective for my front cover.
5. Outdoors/Foliage
I really like the look that a photo with this type of mise en scene gives
out. The foliage makes the image look friendly but also easily interprets
the genre of alternative. I think the styling can be made to compliment
the surroundings. This mise en scene is commonly used which confirms
that it is appropriate for my target market and will appeal to them. Most
of the images I have chosen have quite a pale exposure, I could edit my
images effectively to get this type of look. However, I like the photo of St
Vincent that looks quite bright, fresh and eye catching. I think that
against a crisp which background in my magazine a photo taken with
this mise en scene will stand out and look polished and very effective in
my magazine. The foliage adds variety to the images without making
them look chaotic and unappealing.
6. Bricks
Featuring bricks in my photos will
give my magazine a familiar edge
leaning towards an alternative
genre. The bricks ensure a very
casual and ‘cool’ vibe that my
target market would engage with. I
think I can create a strong photo
interpreting a brick background. I
think an image like this would look
appealing on my contents page.
