My Grandfather Essay
Narrator's grandfather was a black, freed slave who lived in a time where prejudicism was high,
though slavery was abolished. The narrator's grandfather was perceived as a very great man who did
not say much. Though when he laid on his deathbed, he revealed some surprising truth. Narrator's
grandfather told his son, "Son, after I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight. I never told you,
but our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days, a spy in the enemy's country ever
since I gave up my gun back in the Reconstruction." (qtd. Ellison 279). Though this can have
different connotations to it, it can essentially mean that the narrator's grandfather believes he is a
traitor to the black community because he has just kept ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ellison 286). Then the character wakes up with his grandfather's laughter in his ear. This relates to
an earlier incident when the narrator was given a scholarship in an envelope. The narrator had gotten
beaten and later received this envelope. The words "Keep This Nigger–Boy Running" essentially
means for the narrator to keep going and the advice the narrator's grandfather gave his working. If
the narrator keeps conforming to the whites, the blacks can get a head in society and segregation can
be limited or even abolished.
In the story "Two Kinds" Mr. Chong is a perfected representation of a flat character. Mr. Chong was
a retired deaf piano player who was teaching Jing–Wei, the protagonist, how to play the piano. Mr.
Chong's character really did not change too much throughout the story. He was a minor but effective
character in the story. Him being deaf played a major in role in the story. Jing–Wei later on
confessed, " I hit the wrong notes because I hadn't practiced enough, I never corrected myself" (Tan
209). Jing–Wei was lazy and did not practice so she just played in the rhythm so she did not get in
trouble. If the Mr. Chong was not deaf, he can correct these mistakes and the Jing–Wei could not be
lazy. Later on in the story Jing–Wei had to perform in front of her mom and her moms friends. She
did horrible in the performance and her mom got very mad at her because she wanted her to be a
prodigy. This caused a lot disupte amongst the both of them which caused the

My Grandfather
The last time I saw my grandfather in person was summer of 2015. He was visiting our family in the
US. I remember taking him to Washington D.C and we walked the whole day to all the museums
and monuments. I was exhausted at the end of the day and I was surprised that he was able to keep
up at age 72. Even about a month before he left, talking to him on video chat did not give me any
indication that he was going away anytime soon. What's remarkable about death is that it can come
so suddenly. Let alone for others, even he probably did not expect his death to come so suddenly.
For him, death means that he will go somewhere else depending on what his beliefs are. But for me,
death of my grandparent is very strange. Normally when I go back to China, I would stay at his
place. He is always around to handle the chores around the house and making demands of others
because of his teaching background and stubborn personality. But this time when I came back, it
wasn't the same. The subconscious expectation I had was completely shattered. I no longer hear that
loud shouting noise in the background, or that intellectual–toned conversation with his students. I
realized that I took for granted to what has been there for a long time, and when I lost it, I felt
extremely depressed. For the first week, sleeping became an issue for me, not because I wasn't tired
or anything, but because I was somewhat afraid of going to sleep. I fear that when I enter my
dreams, my grandfather would be

Eulogy For Grandfather
Life is a hard concept to understand because it can be there one minute, and gone the next. I have
experienced the death of some very important people in my life, my grandfather being one of them.
At the beginning of this year my great grandfather died, and after his death I realized that I took his
life for granted. From this horrible experience, I have learned to appreciate the time I have with the
people I love, and I have learned to show people my love rather than have people assume my love
for them. My family and I lived with our grandfather after our grandmother passed away. He was
having a difficult time living by himself; he was a double leg amputee and he was well into his
eighties. The best decision was to stay over at his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She said that grandpa was struggling to take a breath, and that he had began to wheeze. Giving him
some water was the only thing I could think to aid the cough. When I went into the kitchen I
grabbed a straw and filled a cup with water. I came into the room, and I held the cup up to my
grandpa. "Here you go Papaw. Sip." I whispered. He tried to sip the water, but couldn't because of
his cough. I gave the cup to my sister and she started dripping water in his mouth from the straw.
"I'm going to call uncle Randy." I told her. The wheezing seemed to be getting a little better, but I
had an eerie feeling about this. I called my uncle and told him to come over. He didn't live far so it
wouldn't take very long for him to get here. He came in not too long afterwards. He checked on him
and said, "It sounds like his cough is getting better. I don't know what else to do girls." He stayed for
a bit longer, but left once our grandpa had fallen back to sleep. I took a deep breath, and went back
into my room to finish my work. About thirty minutes later Mackenzie came through the door with
her eyes wide open and her face blanched. "I think PaPaw stopped breathing." She stuttered, "I think
he died." "What?" I replied, "Did you check his pulse?" She said no. So I rushed into the other
room. It was silent, and there was no coughing at all. I got closer, and stuck my hand in front of his
face to check his breathing and I couldn't feel anything. I frantically grabbed his wrist and

Upon his grandfather's death, it fell to Samuel to sort...
Upon his grandfather's death, it fell to Samuel to sort through former possessions. Samuel found
himself now in the dusty, cobwebbed attic of the old home, surrounded by a constellation of aged
trinkets: faded old photographs, medals and trophies from long distant contests, a plethora of dusty
and worthless relics. Samuel quickly surveyed the items, shuffling through boxes and turning the
occasional object over in his hand. It was depressing, sorting through this collection. It reminded
him of death and the ephemerality of existence. These objects had meaning once, but that meaning
died along with Samuel's grandfather.
What happens to an item when its owner dies? Nothing physical changes, but there is a fundamental
transformation; an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mist coalesced before him, forming at last into a monstrous blue dragon head, which looked
down at him and grinned.
"Samuel," the dragon spoke in a deep, booming voice, "by touching the arcane tablet, you have
summoned me from the realm of spirits. I have awoken in order to grant you three wishes. Only
when your wishes have been granted, may I return to my slumber."
Samuel was stunned, his mind reeling as he struggled to come to grips with what he was
experiencing. Is this a dream? Am I hallucinating? When he finally got a hold of himself, he turned
his attention back to the dragon head floating before him.
"What are you?" Samuel asked.
"I am a Djinn", the dragon answered, "I exist to serve one purpose."
"To grant wishes?"
"Yes –I will grant you three wishes," the dragon repeated.
"Well..." Samuel thought for a moment, "what can I wish for?"
"You may wish for anything you desire. If it is in my power, then your wish will be granted," the
dragon answered. Samuel believed the dragon.
Samuel thought long and hard. He had to be careful what he wished for. Whatever wish he made, he
had to leave no loopholes and make sure to avoid any unintended consequences. Sometimes the
most seemingly insignificant actions can have profound and unexpected consequences. Maybe it is
simply too dangerous to make any wishes, Samuel thought. Maybe no one is smart enough to ensure
the complete safety of a wish. Then an idea occurred to him. He had an idea for the perfect wish

My Grandfather Interview
The moment I was informed about this oral history report, only one person came to my mind when
deciding who to compose this project about. This person was my grandfather. He was an inspiration
in my life. This project has given me the opportunity to reflect back onto my grandfather's stories
and historical accomplishments for on March 19, 2012 was the day my grandfather Richard "Joel"
Pettingell left this earth. There was no such thing as a dull moment in my grandfather's life. The
time I got to spend with my grandfather filled my head with only a faction of the life he lived. To
help elaborate on the high lights of my grandfather's historical moments, I interviewed my uncle
James Pettingell. During the interview we chronologically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This allowed him to focus on studies while still being able to live out one of his dreams of being a
cowboy on his own ranch. He graduated from Colorado State University with three bachelor degrees
in engineering, physics, and mathematics. This lead him back into the class rooms where he tried to
become a mathematics professor. Although is knowledge surpassed the requirements of being an
excellent professor, this career was not meant for his life. He could not be trapped in a class room
for he needed to apply his skills out in the world to pursue his true passions. In his time out in
Colorado, he started his own small Western theme park. One of the highlights of the park was an
original stream train that ran down a one–mile train track which he hand–laid himself. Complaining
was not associated with my grandfather's life, unless the thought about him laying the one mile of
train tracks surfaced in a conversation. The reason being; it was the most excruciating project he had
ever accomplished. "After living out west, how did my grandfather continue his life when he moved
east?" As the years passed he eventually sold the amusement park only to move east in 1967 where
he became the curator of the Resnick Motor Museum in Ellenville New York. The Motor Museum
held over $1,000,000 worth of auto collectables. Summer

Jacob Portman had always felt closer to his grandfather than to his father. While he was growing up
he always loved to hear his grandfather's stories about where he had grown up. His stories were
about children with peculiar abilities. As Jacob started to grow up he stopped believing in his
grandfather's "fairytales". One day while Jacob was at work he gets a call from his grandfather
saying that "they" were after him. Jacob's family think that his grandfather is going crazy and seeing
things. He and his friend, Ricky, got to check on his grandfather, but Jacob can't find him. He heads

Character Analysis: Grandfather
For this essay the character I will be using is Grandfather. The one moment that I think that
Grandfather responded best when faced with adversity was when his heart started to act up and
Mattie was unconscious with the fever. I choose this moment because even though he was very sick,
and could barely walk, he decided to walk through an entire city to get her to safety, because she
might of died if he didn't, or he might of caught the fever himself if he has stayed where there were
so many mosquitoes, and so little portions of food and water "Fruit? I spun around, wide awake and
hungry, above me hung gnarled branches heavy with green speckled pears. I grabbed one and bit
into it, ignoring the juice that ran down my fingers and chin. I gathered as many pears as I could
carry and set off with new energy to find Grandfather. With food, we could hold out for days"
(Anderson 94), "Then, blackness" (Anderson 95). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

My Grandfather : The Life Of A Grandfather
When I was a child, my late grandfather and I spent every summer on the bank of the river ganges.
We would skip stones across the water, breaking the surface of incoming swells. We would wage
Wrs, with sticks for swords and shells for arrows, like the most fearsome of ancient kings and
queens. Idyllic. They never ended. Like the ebb and flow of the tide, under the azure and warmth of
the indian skies, these days continued. My earliest memories of my grandfather were couloured by
the times in these moments. Coating the wet–sand with the dryer sand grains on the bay, throwing
clay–sand bombs from his biomechanical trbuchet. Twiddling his toes amongst the cool baysand and
fiddling with his platinum–irridium vile. 20 years later I cant help but feel the same cool clay on the
bank .
As I emptied the black soot into the ganges, hoping that the tides would carry him toward.
As I emptied the black soot into his platimum–irridium vile, throwing it into the water hoping the
currents carry him toward the the under water city he so desired.
For most of the world my grandfather was a geologist, but to me he was an adventurer. An explorer
of lands vast and unknown. Yet looking back, I knew the reality of his tales were never as he made
them out to be. One might expect to find the desk of a geologist littered with an assortment of
grains, rocks and samples– yet he searched for one and only one precious rock; one he convinced
himself to believe lay under the remains of ancient sity

Meeting My Grandfather
The event on meeting my grandfather. The first time I met him was around the time when I was ten
or nine years old at my old house seeing tv . My mom passes me the home phone and I remember
seeing my mom happy when she passed the phone to me. On the other side of the phone was my
grandfather the first thing he said to me was "How are you doing Isaias." I said " everything is good
how about you grandpa." He took a while to respond back and said "Same here just the weather
being cold." I laugh a little of the way he responded so I say "How do you know about me and my
name." Grandfather responded "Your mom told me many things about you." I was thinking about
what to say next then I say " can you tell me something about you grandpa." It was an interesting
when we first talked to each other we had the simple conversation as a kid I didn't know he was my
grandfather. It took me a couple of minutes because of my Spanish was so bad but he knew what I
was trying to say to him. When I first talk to him I felt comfortable with because this is someone
that wants to hear what I have to say. I have never seen him the person or seen a picture of him at
the time but that really didn't matter at the time. I know it weird that I haven't seen a family picture
of him or anything like that. I asked my mom about it and she told me that my grandfather wasn't a
picture person. Later on, over many fun phone calls and years later I get to see him not in person but

Conservative Grandfather Interview
Interview: Conservative Grandfather, Liberal Father I interviewed my grandfather, a NAACP, 79
year old, Baptist born, Christian pastor who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When I asked
him if he approved of same–sex marriage, he said, "No, it is an abomination. Why would God create
one male and one female if gay couples were supposed to exist?" He also said, "Where in the Bible,
God's word, does it say that gay marriage is okay?" My grandfather did say that he does approve of
equal marriage rights for everyone. He does not believe gay people should marry in the first place,
but they should have equal rights when it comes to jobs and health care. He remembers being a
strong supporter of the Prop 8, but he says, "Now that society is progressing, everyone should have
equal rights. We are all humans." Lastly, my grandfather noted that he would never marry a gay
couple because it is against his religion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

never really had a hands–on experience with gay people or the gay movement. When my dad heard
about the SCOTUS decision, he was like "it's good that another group of people are fighting for
their civil rights and succeeding." Overall, my dad has no problem with gay marriage. He would not

My Grandfather Is A Hero
When you finally realize that someone in your family is a hero to not just one person, but to many,
your view of the world changes a bit. Especially when that person is a grandparent. In March of
2014, my grandfather, Raymond Weber, became a town hero in Hillsboro, ND. Early that morning, I
got up and said hello to my grandfather. He was just starting his day, and his day was busy. As
Police Chief of Hillsboro, he was required to clean out the town armory and make sure all the squad
cars were in working order (making sure the lights and sirens worked). He did this early in the
morning and then came back to pick me up so that I could shadow him as he worked. We did
miscellaneous jobs all day. My grandfather had me working on the jobs that he didn't want to do at
the office while he did the real work of paperwork and signing of other important papers that I
couldn't understand. The real surprise came later that night when we went into the town to do the
final round of the shift. My grandfather loaded me up in the squad car and started it. We drove
around town on his designated route before he was allowed to punch out and go home for the night.
After we finished, we stopped at the precinct so that he could make sure that there was someone
there for the next shift. We then proceeded to head back home. My grandfather decided that it would
be nice for us to go get something to eat, so we stopped at a nearby convenience store. We went in
and bought some pizza

My Grandfather Is A Grandfather
My Grandfather used to play a game with me when I was a child. Every time I would catch him
smoking a cigarette he would invest ten dollars towards my education. He had been a smoker for his
entire life but he would always tell me how this was helping him finally end his habit. I was too
young at the time to realize that there was no actual change in the frequency of his habit, and that I
would catch him out in the garage or in the backyard every time I saw him. As I continued to catch
my Grandfather my belief a difference was being made was going up instead of down, I felt like a
hero. I knew cancer was a terrible thing and had heard that smoking could cause it, but death was a
foreign concept at the time. At the age of nine my parents sat me down to discuss Grandpa's last
visit to the doctor. He had become the rule instead of the exception and had been diagnosed with
lung cancer. How could this have happened after all that I had accomplished with him, heroes are
not supposed to lose. Confusion and hopelessness were the emotions I felt at the time because
failure to prevent cancer seemed to inevitably lead to a failure to beat it. There was no game to play
that could cure my Grandfather once cancer had arrived. To alleviate my confusion and hopelessness
my parents introduced me to the doctor who was treating my Grandpa. He must have felt like he
was in a trivia speed round because I fired off questions faster than he could answer them. He never

Portrait of My Grandfather The person I have chosen to write about is my grandfather Juan "De
Dios" Martinez. My grandfather has been a very influential part of my life. The fact that I am in this
country, I owe to him and my grandmother and the struggles they endured coming here in the 60's.
His life has left an indelible impression on my life, and I feel an inescapable sense of gratitude and
responsibility to him; to succeed and show him that his efforts for our family where not in vain. My
grandfather was born in 1934, or so we think. The problem back in our native country, Puerto Rico,
was that back then often a birth certificate wasn't applied for until years after the person had been
born. Being from a family of campesinos, or rural farmers, it was very difficult to get to the town
center to register a child, so he is in his mid 80's. He is about my height, 5'7'' or so, but he seems
much shorter now, as the years of hard work have seen him hunch slightly and need the use of a
cane to move about. One of the things that always stands out to me about him are his hands. His
hands are rough and beaten up; his knuckles jut out like boulders on the side of a cliff and his veins
can clearly be seen from all the years of supplying energy to the very hands that carried me. What is
odd is that even with all that wear and tear, his hands give the gentlest embrace, all the while
looking still quite formidable to put down any threat if it should arise. Although still quite

Grandfather And Grandfather Essay
A bond between a grandfather and grandson is something that you will always remember and
always cherish in your heart. There are so many things that happens, such as learning experiences,
laughs and occasional arguments. I remember when I was six I started going with my grandpa every
Sunday after church. We would go to the gas station and he'd get gas while I'd sit in the truck and
mess around with all of the stuff he has in it. Always since I was little I wanted to drive my grandpas
truck, every time I'd get in I'd say. "Grandpa, couple more years and I can drive your truck so you
don't have too". "Finally I will get my chauffeur". I never knew what that meat for the longest time,
but I just played along that I knew ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When we do get into arguments it is not good, we both are saying and arguing about the same thing
but we just word it different. It is either that or we argue and it's because he knows a better where to
get it done and a faster way. I always keep in the back of my mind that I should just listen to him,
since one day I'll wake up and he will not be there to work with me anymore. This man can be the
funniest person of all time without even trying he just has that type of energy and connection that
when he talks it is just enjoyable and laughable. He tells me quite often. "If you can't lay down at
night and think instantly about something funny or enjoyable you are living life all wrong slick". I
take everything my grandpa says to me serious, he has been around longer and has done a lot more
than I have. So when we have conversations about life I take that personal and actually listen and try
to get something out of it. Listening to his stories about the "good ole days" as he likes to call it,
may be the best part of our relationship. Listening to the stuff that he used to do with his buddies
and what not reminds me of myself, by the stories that he has told. He did say that are some things
he can't tell me until I am old enough he never told me an age I to be so hopefully one of these days

My Grandfather : My Eulogy Of My Grandfather
My Grandfather
I have always had someone to depend on and who I looked up to. I often look back on what I have
acquired from my grandfather and try to use it in a way to better myself and my future. I believe
everyone should have someone like this in their life! There are many moments in life when you look
back and remember all the lessons and regrets that you use as a platform to assist in shaping your
future. I have done just that, and all the knowledge I currently use came from my grandfather. Many
people say that I was "spoiled as a child, I think of it as being well taken care of and loved.
Since my father was not around for a while when I was a little girl, my grandfather felt it was his
responsibility to be there for me and do what he thought was right. Being a little girl, I do not recall
everything, but my family has many stories that involve me and my grandfather. For instance, when
it was time for me to start eating baby food out of the jars, according to my family, in the 1980's
people were putting glass in baby food jars. My grandfather refused to let me eat baby food out of a
jar at all and he would prepare fresh fruits and vegetables, he continued this even when everything
was safe. I remember often spending time with my grandfather and quite a few memories we shared
together.
When it came to my grandfather there were no restrictions to what he would not give me or do for
me, even if it was not quite what I should have had. Still to this day my family rehashes how I am
spoiled and refer to me as "a papa's girl", which is what we all call my grandfather. There is a
specific memory I recall when I was younger, I was sitting on my grandfather's lap and we were
eating ice cream out of the tub with two spoons, this was "our thing". Another memory I recall; I
was allowed to get up in his semi, which at the time I remember thinking how enormous the truck
was and how amazed and excited I was. Many times, my family has mentioned how I was "the
boss", and when I wanted things a certain way, I got it!
Being spoiled to me, is not a terrible thing, I think of it as being well taken care of and loved. One
might think these are silly, but to me they are a perfect example of how one little memory impacted

The old rock monument looked small from Terry's office window, but rose high above the entrance
to the abandoned cave. The weather–faded names, now barely legible, could be seen just below a

It was only one of many such monuments honoring the dead that were strewn up and down the

My Grandfather As A Hero
Everyone has someone they look up to as a role model or someone they strive to be like in some
certain way. My grandfather is one of the most influential and important people in my life. He has
taught me many of the life lessons I carry with me on a daily basis. I cherish the stories and
experiences he has shared with me throughout life and would not trade them for anything in this
world. His qualities and the way he lives his life have been a good leading example to me that I
attempt to follow on a daily basis. To me, my grandfather is a symbol for how I should try to live my
life. He is a symbol that represents many of the things I think it takes to be considered a good
person. He is a symbol for the determination, selflessness, and positive attitude I want to have in this
life. One of the redeeming qualities that my grandfather possesses is his determination. His
determination has helped him reach many accomplishments and get him through some more
difficult times. My grandfather was a anaesthesiologist for many years before he retired recently.
His determination was a huge factor in helping him in college. While he was in college, he also had
to work in order to support his family. He did this until he received his doctorate and then became a
anaesthesiologist. My grandfather also use his determination to help him during his service in the

"Strength can Come in a Variety of Ways" My grandfather, Nunzio Mugavero, is the definition of
strength. Unfortunately, my grandfather had a major stroke in 2012 and his short–term memory is
completely wiped. Now my grandfather spends most of his days sitting in a retirement living
complex listening to Frank Sinatra and asking my grandmother where the bathroom is in his
apartment. This past Sunday my family and I celebrated his ninetieth birthday. At this party people
told a variety of stories about my grandfather both funny and heartfelt. My biggest takeaway from
this birthday was my realization of just how strong of a person my grandfather was and still is both
literally and mentally. My grandfather truly is the strongest man I have known and his experiences
have taught me that when life gets hard I must stay strong and persevere. Too start off, Nunzio
Mugavero was born on October 23rd, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. His time of birth was exactly two
years prior to the Great Depression. His parents had little money, were immigrants and had eleven
children. Nunzio was the oldest of the eleven and was forced to help around the house always being
given the hardest chores. The hardest chore being when he had to help deliver his youngest brother,
Peter. My grandfather had no medical experience whatsoever, but when his mother went into labor
and his dad was not around to help out my grandfather was brave enough to try and help out his
mother in whatever way possible. His parents

The Death Of My Grandfather
When a relative dies, there is no other feeling like this one. Whether it is an immediate relative or
not, it still hurts. A question that pops into the human mind is, "Why did this happen to my relative?"
or, "What could I have done to prevent this from happening?" Many times, as humans feel that there
is an answer to everything, even when there is not. Even before I was born, my grandfather loved
me. It was so hard for my mother to conceive me that I was known as a miracle baby to not only my
mom and dad, but my grandparents as well. I was born two months early and stayed in the hospital

want to wake me. Even then, I knew that he had always put me before his self, and that was one of
the most important things I would come to remember about him after he was gone. We spent much
of our time together sitting outside watching the people go down the street, while he told me stories
about my mom and how similar we were. I loved watching him speak because his words flowed so
gracefully as if he had practiced and memorized them for weeks before that day. My grandmother
would bring us some lemonade, or a piece of freshly fried chicken and tell us that it was getting dark
and we needed to come inside. He would grab my banana seat bike and wheel it into the garage as I
gathered my hula–hoop and jump rope following him into the garage. Inside as we would get ready
for bed, he would make me a cup of warm milk flavored with just a hint of orange to taste. My
grandmother would tuck me in as my grandfather bent over to give me a goodnight kiss right in the
middle of my forehead. Around the neighborhood, my

My Grandfather
My grandfather has gone for ten years. However, it was strange that he had often been in my dream
until now. In my dream, his figure was so clear that I could touch him. He always held my hand and
told me different fairy tales with a kind smile just like before. After several years of his death, I
finally realized that this is how a person's life connects to another one no matter life is over or not.
In the last few years of my grandfather's life, he got the Alzheimer's disease. It is a chronic disease
acting as decline of intellect and apparatus and change of selfhood. Therefore, sometimes my
grandfather was sober and amiable, but most of the time he was confused and irritable. He could not
recognize his family members: my grandmother, my mother, even me. He always thought we were
strangers, so we could not approach him. When he was ill, I hid in my room and furtively saw him
lose his temper. He sat in a wheelchair and shouted to my mother.
"Who are you! I want to go home! Let me back home!"
"This is your home... I am your daughter..." my mother cried and responded.
In just one year, this disease put my family into the depth of despair because we could not do
anything for my grandfather and just watched him in pain and helplessness. In my memory, that was
an unhappy experience which only had tear and sigh. During that period, I was still a child and the
only thing I can do was to keep silent. My mother told me that my grandfather was in illness and let

The Best Grandfather I could ever have
The Best Grandfather I could ever have
We all have someone in our lives who you can tell your honest thoughts, experiences and life stories
with. We also have those we can look to for some type of guidance, especially in the world we live
in today. My Grandfather, Joshua Jr. is very loyal, generous, and above all in my opinion, the best
role model I could ever have. Here are just a few reasons and examples why he is who he is.
My grandfather is loyal in all ways and in all perspectives. One can be a complete stranger to him
and he will be there for you. He is a man who will do his best to help you out. No matter how tough
or difficult the situation is, he is always there to give a lending hand. For one example, I remember

My grandfather, paid for my first two payments of the rent without me knowing ahead of time. Also
every year, to this day, my grandfather separates and cultivates at least two acres of his land to have
a garden filled with vegetables. After he collects all of what he wants from the garden, he would
take all of the remaining of the harvested crops, which could easily feed a small army, and give
everything away to all of his neighbors and his whole family. Who else would do something as kind
as that? This is just barely scratching the surface of what my grandfather does on a daily basis.
Finally my grandfather is the best role model one could ever have. He is a robust and a religious
man. He is the ideal of the perfect person, grandfather, great grandfather, and husband one could
ever have. For example; recently my grandmother passed away in the month of July of the year
2013. She had been diagnosed with dementia for the past twelve years. Her and my grandfather was
married for the last sixty–six years. Until the day she passed away, they both held hands together
everywhere they went. Another example would be the time when he saved my mom, my uncles, and
a guy that was dying in a burning car. When my mother was six years old, her and my three uncles
were riding in the backseat of my grandfathers 1958 Buick Skylark. They all were driving down the
highway when;" Bam!" the Buick got crashed from the back side. My grandfather hopped out of the
car,

Thanksgiving For Grandfather
It's coming close to Thanksgiving and it's time for giving thanks. One of the many things you can be
thankful for are the people in your life. For example, there are four people in my life who I am
thankful for. They are my dad, my grandpa, my Papa Max and my mom. I'm thankful for them
because they have helped and are still helping the world.
First, my dad. My dad is a policeman. He does a difficult and dangerous job of arresting criminals,
detecting crimes, and responding to emergency calls so we can live in a safety which makes the
world a safer place. Sadly, I do not see him often. Usually the only time I see him is if I wake up in
the middle of the night, or when I wake up to go to school.
Second, my grandpa and Papa Max. They

Summary : Time Travel Paradox
TIME TRAVEL PARADOX
A paradox is a proposition that leads to a conclusion that seems somewhat senseless or logically
unacceptable despite apparently sounding reasonable from acceptable premises. The statement may
also seemingly sound self–contradictory or even absurd but when investigated or explained may
prove to be genuine and quite well founded. Some paradoxes may be considered invaluable
arguments but still play a significant role in promoting critical thinking. Paradoxes have led to the
revelation of existing errors in definitions that were thought to be inflexible and meticulous, causing
the re–examination of some axioms of mathematics and logic, proving it to be invaluable. An
example of a paradox is in the contradiction of statements such as 'the previous sentence is false '; if
this statement is true, then the sentence is false, making the statement true. However, the statement
cannot be true and false at the same time, therefore making it impossible to tell if the statement is
true or false as it would contradict itself. This endless cycle is referred to as vicious circularity.
There exist many types of paradoxes. An example is that of the time paradox, also called the
temporal paradox or time travel paradox. It consists of not just a single puzzle but a series of them,
which shape and dictate our lives and destinies. Each distinct perspective towards time results in
numerous benefits and costs. Most people are usually totally unaware of the effect of time in our

Grand Loss Research Paper
A Grand Loss My Grandfather died on December 5th, 2015. I was 15 at the time and I had only just
started highschool as a junior a few months prior. I didn't get to see him recently before his death,
nor was I able to say goodbye to him before his passing. Instead, I got to wait patiently while the
man I respected for so long took his last breath. I watched as he passed away, right in front of my
eyes. People die. This is common knowledge people learn over the course of their own lives.
Whether it be experience from the passing of a friend or loved one, or they themselves are in the
same boat. At some point someone comes face to face with death. It is, however, different when a
child forces themselves to watch such a tragic incident on their own accord. It changes a person, be
it just a little, or to an extreme. I was the latter. I remember when my father told me the news. I was

The experience was honestly chilling. I couldn't remember a time I ever saw my Grandfather in a
state like he was then. He had always been strong and joyful, smiling at anyone who was willing to
spend the time to look. So, when I saw him, practically skin sticking to bone, it took everything I
had to not cry the streams of tears that screamed to pour out. He was someone who I always
respected, and now he was fighting to stay alive, and losing. His skin was turning gray. The hair on
his head had started to die, leaving only strands of dull white hair that speckled the top of his head.
The rest of his figure seemed small. He was sinking inside of the bed, the ability of movement
having left him long ago. His eyes were closed tightly, pain spreading along his face every so often.
I remember him scrunching up his face and his mouth opening and closing like he was calling for
help. Like he wanted someone to save him from the pain he was

The Movie ' Whale Rider ' By Niki Caro
In the movie "Whale Rider" by Niki Caro, the theme is subjugation of women and the main
character Paikea manages to surpass the patriarchal beliefs so she is a winner which is good for the
community and that makes for a happy ending.
The main event of this movie is when the whales answer Paikea's call for help and end up stranded
on the shore. The locals are unable to move the whales, after many attempts they give up and walk
away with sadness. Then, Pai climbs up on the whale and rides it out to sea, making the rest of the
whales follow. At that moment she is unafraid of dying and goes underwater with the whale. The
whales mean a lot to their community because they believe that their ancestor Paikea was saved by
the whales.
In the movie, Paikea decides to live up to her grandfather's expectations and to do so she challenges
the tradition by following her own path as a leader. An example of her determination is when she
learns how to fight with a taiaha by spying on the lesson through the window when Koro had told
her she couldn't learn it because she wasn't a boy. Her grandfather is the person with whom she is
always in confrontation. In fact, when the Marae was beginning she sat at the front row. Koro then
tells her to sit at the back because she is a girl, when she refuses to move he sends her away. On the
inside, Pai is trying to make Koro proud and to be a role model but she has to break the "rules" set
by Koro and the old traditions. Throughout the story she grows up

Grandfather Descriptive Essay
The image I have chosen is my grandfather blessing an excerpt from my uncle's mural in San
Antonio. The mural can be seen from the highway on the side of a laundromat. The mural is called
"Insomne de Amor" and was finished in 1999, then restored in 2009. All the realistic images on the
mural are of my family. When the mural was in the process of being restored, my uncle had staged
photos of us taken that he then turned into graphics before they were painted on the wall. The
excerpt is of my grandfather wrapping his arms around my sister and I as we look up to him. He is
wearing a superman shirt and has the sun haloing around his head radiating light to the rest of the
mural. When the mural unveiled to the public there was a ceremony and to end holy water was
handed out so those in attendance could bless the mural. A photo was taken my grandfather
choosing to bless the faces of my sister and I rather than himself. This picture was the one chosen
when an article about the mural was written in the local paper, and is the first result when the mural
is searched on the internet. The depiction on the mural and the photo taken at the unveiling is how I
know my grandpa to be–selfless and radiating.
Growing up I have seen and heard many stories of my grandpa always putting others before himself.

`` Cold Sassy Tree `` By Olive Ann Burns
The town of Cold Sassy is simply a traditional southern town. From family values to back alley
gossip, the citizens of Cold Sassy play the role of southern parody in society. On the outside it
appears to be genuine, caring and communal environment, but just like any community, its roots
grow far deeper than its outward appearance. This is not an accident either, as author Olive Ann
Burns writes this novel, Cold Sassy Tree, to emphasize intentionally the crooked nature of small,
southern towns, and by extension, southern heritage as a whole. Through her characters, Burns
paints a playful picture of misconception, polarization, conformity, and perseverance, and their
weaving in and out of the culture of her fictional town. It is ... Show more content on

Mill Town is, as its name boldly declares, the blue–collar hub of this southern sector. The citizens of
Mill Town work the mill, which provides much of Cold Sassy's resources. Despite this relationship,
the people of Cold Sassy see the people of Mill Town as lesser than themselves. When writing about
his encounters with Lightfoot McLendon, Will states, "The girl didn't seem to have heard yet that
nobody in Mill Town ever amounted to anything." (Burns 71) As much insight as this quote
provides into the thought processes of not only Will, but into the whole of Cold Sassy, Will further
illustrates the division when he discusses what people would think if they were to find out about his
forbidden feelings for Lightfoot. "I went from hoping I'd see Lightfoot to hoping I wouldn't. It was
one thing to like her at school and nobody know it. Here in Mill Town at my crosstie stage, folks
would suspicion her if they saw me acting friendly." (Burns 70) It is clear from these statements that
the people of Cold Sassy are heavily prejudiced against those that consider to be of a lower class.
This causes extreme division among the people, even to the extent that they cannot associate with
one another. While these examples of division are fairly obvious in the text of Cold Sassy Tree, the
final source of division among the people is far more subliminal. There exists in the roots of Cold
Sassy reliance upon tradition and cultural norms. They live by an unspoken

The Death Of My Grandfather
Life is full endless possibilities but in order to make life a little easier is by giving up. Sacrifice is
something important or value for the sake of other respect. The sacrifice I had made, was the death
of my grandfather. My grandfather was the only person I look up to very closely because he
understood me like no other. My grandfather lived in Puerto Rico and since I was six years old, we
have done everything that he and I could have possibly think about such as, every night we would
go to the beach, the park, the stores and enjoy the night outside in his yard. Our favorite place was
just the background of his home because he had roosters and I would always help him feed them.
Him and I just sat in the yard and talk for hours about our lives and we made many promises to each
other. However, the only issue was that my grandfather lived in Puerto Rico and I lived in New
York, so I only got to see him once a year. Sometimes I had to force my mother to let me go to
Puerto Rico or for him to come to New York to spend the holidays together. My grandmother would
get jealous sometimes because I use to always be with my grandfather, I always dependent on him
for everything, but one day he was at the doctors and I didn't know what was wrong. He tells me
everything and I realized he wasn't ready to tell me that he was dying because he knew I couldn't
handle it and he was right. When I found out he was suffering from lung cancer I started taking care

The most inspiring person I have in my life is my grandfather, Raing Chhorm. He is a father of 3
beautiful daughters. His wife, which is my grandmother, name is Heang Sok and my grandfather
always put his family first before his wellbeing. This man Is the most prideful human being I know
he never asks others for help. The reasons I'm so inspired by my grandfather is because he's
openminded, courageous, loving. Before my grandfather was a father he was a Cambodian Buddhist
monk. He was very big on helping others and as a job of a monk is to pass the teachings of buddha,
such as reincarnation, to keep a steady mind or even how a person is supposed to be allowed to have
chances to make them self–better. With being a monk, you go into a phase where you see yourself
becoming more and more openminded. Where judgements weren't allowed to even be thought in
your head. He's quick to anyone without even thinking twice on a person's intentions of trying to rob
him or if he was helping an suspicious person. When being openminded your open to suggestions
and new things, such as food, clothing, languages, etc. In the year off 2015, my grandfather was

It is important to be thankful because people need to understand how good we have it compared to
other kids. We also need to show gratitude. We need to live with more passion because it makes us a

cheese. Grateful! I am thankful for my grandparents. They turned me into the person I am today.
And that will stay with me forever. I´m really lucky theyŕe mine because they always call and see
what's going on and always send me candy and stuff for all the holidays. They always give the best

me. My grandpa can always go fishing. They are really awesome.

I love to tell stories about my childhood. Looking back now, through all of my life's experiences, it
almost feels like I was living in a fairy tale. It brings both joy and sadness to my heart when I share

how those things impacted my life today. The sadness comes from knowing that she will never get

Saturday was cleanup day and I helped my grandfather shovel the sawdust off of the meat market
floor. After the morning rush of customers, I took the shovel and began my journey. For most kids,
this was a lot of hard work, but I loved being my grandfather's little helper. I would take the giant
shovel and slide it across the floor, scooping more sawdust than I could pick up. I would spill half of
it back onto the floor. After the old sawdust was picked up, we would put new sawdust down so the
floor would be nice and clean. It was time for my favorite part of the day. After we cleaned up
everything, my grandfather and I would walk downtown to the Dime Store so I could spend my
savings! The Dime Store was like the Dollar General store is to us today. To me it was the biggest
toy store in the whole world! My grandfather would say "ok, you can pick two things, that's it". He
knew he had to set a limit or my arms would be loaded down with items when we reached the cash
register. I would have spent my limit and more. My grandfather taught me not to spend all of my
money. He would tell me, "save some for a rainy day". I often wondered what that meant. As I
placed my items on the counter, my grandfather said "are you sure that is what you want"? It was the

"The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance."–
Alan Watts
Throughout history; more specifically throughout different generations, we as human beings have
been subject to a certain amount of change within our society. As time goes by change is almost
inevitable among a nation. Change has occurred throughout history due to specific events that have
a ripple effect upon individuals. Whether the change is a result of advancing technology, social
climate, or foreign influence there is little chance of preventing the effect it will have on society. It is
difficult to argue that we have not seen a paradigm shift in social attitudes from generation to ...

When asked about his sense of community during his childhood, my Grandfather spoke about how
much his family and his neighbours relied on each other to survive and to keep each other in good
spirits. They helped farm each others land and in the end would split what was harvested. It was not
until doing further research that it became obvious to me just how important the interdependence of
this tight knit community was to their survival. Between 1943 and 1945 the Dutch people faced a
horrible famine that killed nearly 30,000 Dutch civilians which is an astronomical number for a two
years span. (Hitchcock, 98) Seeing as my Grandfather was so young at the time he was not able to
remember much about his times during the war, so instead I conducted some research on what life
might have been for a Dutch civilian during that time period. During the war time the Dutch
government was completely ran by Nazis and as a result many rules were implemented that were of
little benefit to the people of the country. For example men from ages 18–35 were forced to work in
munitions factories and do field work, Dutch people were handed out "ration cards" that would limit
the amount of food they could consume within the week. (Van der Zee, 3) Evidently this was a
difficult time for the Dutch people so I decided to then change the topic of discussion and ask my
Grandfather about his teenage years. To kick off the discussion the

Sometimes it is difficult for kids to become really close with their grandparents, but for me it was
easy. Ever since I met my grandpa, I have had this connection with Gramps that has just continued

Gramps. To me, he isn't just my grandpa, he is one of my friends because of the impact he has had
on my life. Gramps has turned me into who I am today. He has brown eyes that remind me of sweet
chocolate, they are always so easy to picture in my mind. I could stare into his eyes for days and it
would never get old. However, he has thick old glasses that cover his rich brown eyes. To go along
with his eyes, he is always wearing his polo shirts, with all different types of khaki pants. His
favorite polo is his pink polo, and when he wears it he always says, "real men wear pink." Every
time he says that, I still laugh no matter how many times that he has said it to me. To go along with
his outfit, he wears old brown shoes all the time unless he is doing athletics. One early morning,
when I was ten, I woke up to my mom saying, "Sean your grandparents are going to the soccer
tournament in Florida." From that moment on I realized how much Gramps cared for me, and him

with having to. As I matured, I would later discover my internal moral compass, and it would
consistently point me in the direction of the talks with my Grandfather for guidance. Eventually,
through the experiences of life, the hills and the valleys, my determination to apply what I learned
from my youth would have me arrive at a place in my life where my wife and children refer to me as
"a good man." What a humbling honor that is. I am thankful for the life that my Grandfather lived.
While alive, my Grandfather impacted those around him positively. He brought out the best in
others and sought to make a difference wherever he could; I choose to do the same. It is primarily
because of him that I eventually pursued a career in law enforcement. I desired a vocation that was
honorable; one that served and defended others. Law Enforcement allowed me to walk out in life the
values that he instilled in me. He has been gone for more than thirty–five years now, however to this
day, when people speak of him, the first thing they mention is that he was a good man. It is through

those who had just condemned him. Each of us makes our mark in life by how we live it and in how

Dave has a grandson that he wrote an important letter to. His grandsons name was Dylan. Dylan was
not old enough to read the letter yet, but Dave wrote it anyway. In the letter Dave wrote to Dylan,
Dave was telling Dylan about some of the things he has learned throughout his lifetime. He started
by telling dylan that just because everyone believes in one thing it does not make them all correct.
Dave Barry's short story "Dave Barry teaches his grandson life's lessons –beginning with the

Stage IV lung cancer. Over the course of the Summer of 2006, I watched the once statuesque man
that was my grandfather grow frail and disappear before my eyes. If I was not in his home, we were

understand what was happening and had a nurse hold my hand while I cried in the hallway. I was
scared for the unknown for him and my family. "What would the world be like without my
grandfather in it?", "Who would be there to take care of my grandmother?" a million questions
darted through my head but I felt the uncontrollable need to always be strong in his presence.
The end of summer was filled with an endless cycle of doctors appointments and hospital visits.
Each time a different nurse would grace my family with their presence. They always had skillful
hands when drawing blood and a gentle touch when comforting one of my family members. I would
spend much of my time talking to these unbelievably kind people and they always had just that extra
moment to spare for me. On August 4th, 2006, on the

My Grandfather
I hardly ever think about the lives my grand–parents and great–grand–parents led. Maybe this hig
tech world has desensitized us to our emotions, or maybe we have lost touch with our spiritual
selves. Whatever the case, it seems that in today's modern world, most people don't think or worry
about people who lived in a different time than today. Why should my ancestors be of importance to
me?
After thinking about this topic, I began to realize the importance of knowing more about my
relatives. Sometimes a family tree is written for reasons other than just being able to trace your
roots. Obviously, if it were not for my relatives I could not have existed. The gift of life is indeed a
gift, a gift I believe is only given to us once. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some people become popular because they are bad, others become popular because they are in the
right place at the right time. My grandfather was popular because he made a difference in many
people's lives. Whether it be from doing people a favor or giving them advice, he was always there
for his friends and family. Someday, I hope people will see me the same way they saw him. Seeing
the many people at his funeral was enough to make me wonder what kind of life he had, but all I
really knew about him was from my own experience.
I used to catch the bus to my grandparents house almost everyday after school. Since they were
already retired, they were the ones who took care of me after school while my parents were at work.
I remember the feelings of anticipation I had while riding the bus. I couldn't wait to go to my
grandparent's house. I would always walk two blocks from where the bus dropped me off and then
feel a sense of relief upon arriving at the house. Memories of then strike me as odd now, for I have
grown so much since I was in that routine, but the memories are still strong. I distinctly remember
the small black gate and the cement walk way that leads to the steps and the front door. Upon
entering the front door, how could I forget the living room? It had an early 20th century design as
did most of house. The parts that were newer were added on as my grandparents had children. The
house still felt like an old house to me, anyway. Anything older

My Grandfather Essay

  • 1. My Grandfather Essay Narrator's grandfather was a black, freed slave who lived in a time where prejudicism was high, though slavery was abolished. The narrator's grandfather was perceived as a very great man who did not say much. Though when he laid on his deathbed, he revealed some surprising truth. Narrator's grandfather told his son, "Son, after I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight. I never told you, but our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days, a spy in the enemy's country ever since I gave up my gun back in the Reconstruction." (qtd. Ellison 279). Though this can have different connotations to it, it can essentially mean that the narrator's grandfather believes he is a traitor to the black community because he has just kept ... This relates to an earlier incident when the narrator was given a scholarship in an envelope. The narrator had gotten beaten and later received this envelope. The words "Keep This Nigger–Boy Running" essentially means for the narrator to keep going and the advice the narrator's grandfather gave his working. If the narrator keeps conforming to the whites, the blacks can get a head in society and segregation can be limited or even abolished. In the story "Two Kinds" Mr. Chong is a perfected representation of a flat character. Mr. Chong was a retired deaf piano player who was teaching Jing–Wei, the protagonist, how to play the piano. Mr. Chong's character really did not change too much throughout the story. He was a minor but effective character in the story. Him being deaf played a major in role in the story. Jing–Wei later on confessed, " I hit the wrong notes because I hadn't practiced enough, I never corrected myself" (Tan 209). Jing–Wei was lazy and did not practice so she just played in the rhythm so she did not get in trouble. If the Mr. Chong was not deaf, he can correct these mistakes and the Jing–Wei could not be lazy. Later on in the story Jing–Wei had to perform in front of her mom and her moms friends. She did horrible in the performance and her mom got very mad at her because she wanted her to be a prodigy. • 3. My Grandfather The last time I saw my grandfather in person was summer of 2015. He was visiting our family in the US. I remember taking him to Washington D.C and we walked the whole day to all the museums and monuments. I was exhausted at the end of the day and I was surprised that he was able to keep up at age 72. Even about a month before he left, talking to him on video chat did not give me any indication that he was going away anytime soon. What's remarkable about death is that it can come so suddenly. Let alone for others, even he probably did not expect his death to come so suddenly. For him, death means that he will go somewhere else depending on what his beliefs are. But for me, death of my grandparent is very strange. Normally when I go back to China, I would stay at his place. He is always around to handle the chores around the house and making demands of others because of his teaching background and stubborn personality. But this time when I came back, it wasn't the same. The subconscious expectation I had was completely shattered. I no longer hear that loud shouting noise in the background, or that intellectual–toned conversation with his students. I realized that I took for granted to what has been there for a long time, and when I lost it, I felt extremely depressed. For the first week, sleeping became an issue for me, not because I wasn't tired or anything, but because I was somewhat afraid of going to sleep. I fear that when I enter my dreams, my grandfather would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Eulogy For Grandfather Life is a hard concept to understand because it can be there one minute, and gone the next. I have experienced the death of some very important people in my life, my grandfather being one of them. At the beginning of this year my great grandfather died, and after his death I realized that I took his life for granted. From this horrible experience, I have learned to appreciate the time I have with the people I love, and I have learned to show people my love rather than have people assume my love for them. My family and I lived with our grandfather after our grandmother passed away. He was having a difficult time living by himself; he was a double leg amputee and he was well into his eighties. The best decision was to stay over at his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She said that grandpa was struggling to take a breath, and that he had began to wheeze. Giving him some water was the only thing I could think to aid the cough. When I went into the kitchen I grabbed a straw and filled a cup with water. I came into the room, and I held the cup up to my grandpa. "Here you go Papaw. Sip." I whispered. He tried to sip the water, but couldn't because of his cough. I gave the cup to my sister and she started dripping water in his mouth from the straw. "I'm going to call uncle Randy." I told her. The wheezing seemed to be getting a little better, but I had an eerie feeling about this. I called my uncle and told him to come over. He didn't live far so it wouldn't take very long for him to get here. He came in not too long afterwards. He checked on him and said, "It sounds like his cough is getting better. I don't know what else to do girls." He stayed for a bit longer, but left once our grandpa had fallen back to sleep. I took a deep breath, and went back into my room to finish my work. About thirty minutes later Mackenzie came through the door with her eyes wide open and her face blanched. "I think PaPaw stopped breathing." She stuttered, "I think he died." "What?" I replied, "Did you check his pulse?" She said no. So I rushed into the other room. It was silent, and there was no coughing at all. I got closer, and stuck my hand in front of his face to check his breathing and I couldn't feel anything. I frantically grabbed his wrist and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Samuel found himself now in the dusty, cobwebbed attic of the old home, surrounded by a constellation of aged trinkets: faded old photographs, medals and trophies from long distant contests, a plethora of dusty and worthless relics. Samuel quickly surveyed the items, shuffling through boxes and turning the occasional object over in his hand. It was depressing, sorting through this collection. It reminded him of death and the ephemerality of existence. These objects had meaning once, but that meaning died along with Samuel's grandfather. What happens to an item when its owner dies? Nothing physical changes, but there is a fundamental transformation; an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mist coalesced before him, forming at last into a monstrous blue dragon head, which looked down at him and grinned. "Samuel," the dragon spoke in a deep, booming voice, "by touching the arcane tablet, you have summoned me from the realm of spirits. I have awoken in order to grant you three wishes. Only when your wishes have been granted, may I return to my slumber." Samuel was stunned, his mind reeling as he struggled to come to grips with what he was experiencing. Is this a dream? Am I hallucinating? When he finally got a hold of himself, he turned his attention back to the dragon head floating before him. "What are you?" Samuel asked. "I am a Djinn", the dragon answered, "I exist to serve one purpose." "To grant wishes?" "Yes –I will grant you three wishes," the dragon repeated. "Well..." Samuel thought for a moment, "what can I wish for?" "You may wish for anything you desire. If it is in my power, then your wish will be granted," the dragon answered. Samuel believed the dragon. Samuel thought long and hard. He had to be careful what he wished for. Whatever wish he made, he had to leave no loopholes and make sure to avoid any unintended consequences. Sometimes the most seemingly insignificant actions can have profound and unexpected consequences. Maybe it is simply too dangerous to make any wishes, Samuel thought. Maybe no one is smart enough to ensure the complete safety of a wish. Then an idea occurred to him. He had an idea for the perfect wish ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. My Grandfather Interview The moment I was informed about this oral history report, only one person came to my mind when deciding who to compose this project about. This person was my grandfather. He was an inspiration in my life. This project has given me the opportunity to reflect back onto my grandfather's stories and historical accomplishments for on March 19, 2012 was the day my grandfather Richard "Joel" Pettingell left this earth. There was no such thing as a dull moment in my grandfather's life. The time I got to spend with my grandfather filled my head with only a faction of the life he lived. To help elaborate on the high lights of my grandfather's historical moments, I interviewed my uncle James Pettingell. During the interview we chronologically ... He graduated from Colorado State University with three bachelor degrees in engineering, physics, and mathematics. This lead him back into the class rooms where he tried to become a mathematics professor. Although is knowledge surpassed the requirements of being an excellent professor, this career was not meant for his life. He could not be trapped in a class room for he needed to apply his skills out in the world to pursue his true passions. In his time out in Colorado, he started his own small Western theme park. One of the highlights of the park was an original stream train that ran down a one–mile train track which he hand–laid himself. Complaining was not associated with my grandfather's life, unless the thought about him laying the one mile of train tracks surfaced in a conversation. The reason being; it was the most excruciating project he had ever accomplished. "After living out west, how did my grandfather continue his life when he moved east?" As the years passed he eventually sold the amusement park only to move east in 1967 where he became the curator of the Resnick Motor Museum in Ellenville New York. The one moment that I think that Grandfather responded best when faced with adversity was when his heart started to act up and Mattie was unconscious with the fever. I choose this moment because even though he was very sick, and could barely walk, he decided to walk through an entire city to get her to safety, because she might of died if he didn't, or he might of caught the fever himself if he has stayed where there were so many mosquitoes, and so little portions of food and water "Fruit? I spun around, wide awake and hungry, above me hung gnarled branches heavy with green speckled pears. I grabbed one and bit into it, ignoring the juice that ran down my fingers and chin. • 15. My Grandfather : The Life Of A Grandfather When I was a child, my late grandfather and I spent every summer on the bank of the river ganges. We would skip stones across the water, breaking the surface of incoming swells. We would wage Wrs, with sticks for swords and shells for arrows, like the most fearsome of ancient kings and queens. Idyllic. They never ended. Like the ebb and flow of the tide, under the azure and warmth of the indian skies, these days continued. My earliest memories of my grandfather were couloured by the times in these moments. Coating the wet–sand with the dryer sand grains on the bay, throwing clay–sand bombs from his biomechanical trbuchet. Twiddling his toes amongst the cool baysand and fiddling with his platinum–irridium vile. 20 years later I cant help but feel the same cool clay on the bank . As I emptied the black soot into the ganges, hoping that the tides would carry him toward. As I emptied the black soot into his platimum–irridium vile, throwing it into the water hoping the currents carry him toward the the under water city he so desired. For most of the world my grandfather was a geologist, but to me he was an adventurer. An explorer of lands vast and unknown. Yet looking back, I knew the reality of his tales were never as he made them out to be. One might expect to find the desk of a geologist littered with an assortment of grains, rocks and samples– yet he searched for one and only one precious rock; one he convinced himself to believe lay under the remains of ancient sity ... • 17. Meeting My Grandfather The event on meeting my grandfather. The first time I met him was around the time when I was ten or nine years old at my old house seeing tv . My mom passes me the home phone and I remember seeing my mom happy when she passed the phone to me. On the other side of the phone was my grandfather the first thing he said to me was "How are you doing Isaias." I said " everything is good how about you grandpa." He took a while to respond back and said "Same here just the weather being cold." I laugh a little of the way he responded so I say "How do you know about me and my name." Grandfather responded "Your mom told me many things about you." I was thinking about what to say next then I say " can you tell me something about you grandpa." It was an interesting when we first talked to each other we had the simple conversation as a kid I didn't know he was my grandfather. It took me a couple of minutes because of my Spanish was so bad but he knew what I was trying to say to him. When I first talk to him I felt comfortable with because this is someone that wants to hear what I have to say. I have never seen him the person or seen a picture of him at the time but that really didn't matter at the time. I know it weird that I haven't seen a family picture of him or anything like that. I asked my mom about it and she told me that my grandfather wasn't a picture person. Later on, over many fun phone calls and years later I get to see him not in person but at a video chat. • 19. Conservative Grandfather Interview Interview: Conservative Grandfather, Liberal Father I interviewed my grandfather, a NAACP, 79 year old, Baptist born, Christian pastor who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When I asked him if he approved of same–sex marriage, he said, "No, it is an abomination. Why would God create one male and one female if gay couples were supposed to exist?" He also said, "Where in the Bible, God's word, does it say that gay marriage is okay?" My grandfather did say that he does approve of equal marriage rights for everyone. He does not believe gay people should marry in the first place, but they should have equal rights when it comes to jobs and health care. He remembers being a strong supporter of the Prop 8, but he says, "Now that society is progressing, everyone should have equal rights. We are all humans." Lastly, my grandfather noted that he would never marry a gay couple because it is against his religion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a norm. It does not personally affect me." He went on to talk about the fact that each person has a choice and freedom to do and say whatever they want in America. He also noted that my grandfather's response was so drastically different because of the generation gap. My grandfather never really had a hands–on experience with gay people or the gay movement. When my dad heard about the SCOTUS decision, he was like "it's good that another group of people are fighting for their civil rights and succeeding." Overall, my dad has no problem with gay marriage. • 21. My Grandfather Is A Hero When you finally realize that someone in your family is a hero to not just one person, but to many, your view of the world changes a bit. Especially when that person is a grandparent. In March of 2014, my grandfather, Raymond Weber, became a town hero in Hillsboro, ND. Early that morning, I got up and said hello to my grandfather. He was just starting his day, and his day was busy. As Police Chief of Hillsboro, he was required to clean out the town armory and make sure all the squad cars were in working order (making sure the lights and sirens worked). He did this early in the morning and then came back to pick me up so that I could shadow him as he worked. We did miscellaneous jobs all day. My grandfather had me working on the jobs that he didn't want to do at the office while he did the real work of paperwork and signing of other important papers that I couldn't understand. The real surprise came later that night when we went into the town to do the final round of the shift. My grandfather loaded me up in the squad car and started it. We drove around town on his designated route before he was allowed to punch out and go home for the night. After we finished, we stopped at the precinct so that he could make sure that there was someone there for the next shift. We then proceeded to head back home. My grandfather decided that it would be nice for us to go get something to eat, so we stopped at a nearby convenience store. We went in and bought some pizza ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. My Grandfather Is A Grandfather My Grandfather used to play a game with me when I was a child. Every time I would catch him smoking a cigarette he would invest ten dollars towards my education. He had been a smoker for his entire life but he would always tell me how this was helping him finally end his habit. I was too young at the time to realize that there was no actual change in the frequency of his habit, and that I would catch him out in the garage or in the backyard every time I saw him. As I continued to catch my Grandfather my belief a difference was being made was going up instead of down, I felt like a hero. I knew cancer was a terrible thing and had heard that smoking could cause it, but death was a foreign concept at the time. At the age of nine my parents sat me down to discuss Grandpa's last visit to the doctor. He had become the rule instead of the exception and had been diagnosed with lung cancer. How could this have happened after all that I had accomplished with him, heroes are not supposed to lose. Confusion and hopelessness were the emotions I felt at the time because failure to prevent cancer seemed to inevitably lead to a failure to beat it. There was no game to play that could cure my Grandfather once cancer had arrived. To alleviate my confusion and hopelessness my parents introduced me to the doctor who was treating my Grandpa. He must have felt like he was in a trivia speed round because I fired off questions faster than he could answer them. He never got annoyed or lost his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. My Grandfather Portrait of My Grandfather The person I have chosen to write about is my grandfather Juan "De Dios" Martinez. My grandfather has been a very influential part of my life. The fact that I am in this country, I owe to him and my grandmother and the struggles they endured coming here in the 60's. His life has left an indelible impression on my life, and I feel an inescapable sense of gratitude and responsibility to him; to succeed and show him that his efforts for our family where not in vain. My grandfather was born in 1934, or so we think. The problem back in our native country, Puerto Rico, was that back then often a birth certificate wasn't applied for until years after the person had been born. Being from a family of campesinos, or rural farmers, it was very difficult to get to the town center to register a child, so he is in his mid 80's. He is about my height, 5'7'' or so, but he seems much shorter now, as the years of hard work have seen him hunch slightly and need the use of a cane to move about. One of the things that always stands out to me about him are his hands. His hands are rough and beaten up; his knuckles jut out like boulders on the side of a cliff and his veins can clearly be seen from all the years of supplying energy to the very hands that carried me. What is odd is that even with all that wear and tear, his hands give the gentlest embrace, all the while looking still quite formidable to put down any threat if it should arise. Although still quite ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Grandfather And Grandfather Essay A bond between a grandfather and grandson is something that you will always remember and always cherish in your heart. There are so many things that happens, such as learning experiences, laughs and occasional arguments. I remember when I was six I started going with my grandpa every Sunday after church. We would go to the gas station and he'd get gas while I'd sit in the truck and mess around with all of the stuff he has in it. Always since I was little I wanted to drive my grandpas truck, every time I'd get in I'd say. "Grandpa, couple more years and I can drive your truck so you don't have too". "Finally I will get my chauffeur". I never knew what that meat for the longest time, but I just played along that I knew ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we do get into arguments it is not good, we both are saying and arguing about the same thing but we just word it different. It is either that or we argue and it's because he knows a better where to get it done and a faster way. I always keep in the back of my mind that I should just listen to him, since one day I'll wake up and he will not be there to work with me anymore. This man can be the funniest person of all time without even trying he just has that type of energy and connection that when he talks it is just enjoyable and laughable. He tells me quite often. "If you can't lay down at night and think instantly about something funny or enjoyable you are living life all wrong slick". I take everything my grandpa says to me serious, he has been around longer and has done a lot more than I have. So when we have conversations about life I take that personal and actually listen and try to get something out of it. Listening to his stories about the "good ole days" as he likes to call it, may be the best part of our relationship. Listening to the stuff that he used to do with his buddies and what not reminds me of myself, by the stories that he has told. He did say that are some things he can't tell me until I am old enough he never told me an age I to be so hopefully one of these days he just forgets and tells me. • 29. My Grandfather : My Eulogy Of My Grandfather My Grandfather I have always had someone to depend on and who I looked up to. I often look back on what I have acquired from my grandfather and try to use it in a way to better myself and my future. I believe everyone should have someone like this in their life! There are many moments in life when you look back and remember all the lessons and regrets that you use as a platform to assist in shaping your future. I have done just that, and all the knowledge I currently use came from my grandfather. Many people say that I was "spoiled as a child, I think of it as being well taken care of and loved. Since my father was not around for a while when I was a little girl, my grandfather felt it was his responsibility to be there for me and do what he thought was right. Being a little girl, I do not recall everything, but my family has many stories that involve me and my grandfather. For instance, when it was time for me to start eating baby food out of the jars, according to my family, in the 1980's people were putting glass in baby food jars. My grandfather refused to let me eat baby food out of a jar at all and he would prepare fresh fruits and vegetables, he continued this even when everything was safe. I remember often spending time with my grandfather and quite a few memories we shared together. When it came to my grandfather there were no restrictions to what he would not give me or do for me, even if it was not quite what I should have had. Still to this day my family rehashes how I am spoiled and refer to me as "a papa's girl", which is what we all call my grandfather. There is a specific memory I recall when I was younger, I was sitting on my grandfather's lap and we were eating ice cream out of the tub with two spoons, this was "our thing". Another memory I recall; I was allowed to get up in his semi, which at the time I remember thinking how enormous the truck was and how amazed and excited I was. Many times, my family has mentioned how I was "the boss", and when I wanted things a certain way, I got it! Being spoiled to me, is not a terrible thing, I think of it as being well taken care of and loved. One might think these are silly, but to me they are a perfect example of how one little memory impacted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The weather–faded names, now barely legible, could be seen just below a modern plaque placed above the old engravings, in an effort to keep their memory alive for at least another century. Terry owned and maintained the monument and the land around the cave entrance. It was only one of many such monuments honoring the dead that were strewn up and down the mountains, bearing witness more to the extremes of living in those mountains than the loss of life. This monument at the cave's entrance was to Terry much more personal than any of the others. Terry's grandfather's name was among the twelve miners carved into the base. Four ... My grandfather is one of the most influential and important people in my life. He has taught me many of the life lessons I carry with me on a daily basis. I cherish the stories and experiences he has shared with me throughout life and would not trade them for anything in this world. His qualities and the way he lives his life have been a good leading example to me that I attempt to follow on a daily basis. To me, my grandfather is a symbol for how I should try to live my life. He is a symbol that represents many of the things I think it takes to be considered a good person. He is a symbol for the determination, selflessness, and positive attitude I want to have in this life. One of the redeeming qualities that my grandfather possesses is his determination. His determination has helped him reach many accomplishments and get him through some more difficult times. My grandfather was a anaesthesiologist for many years before he retired recently. His determination was a huge factor in helping him in college. While he was in college, he also had to work in order to support his family. • 35. My Grandfather "Strength can Come in a Variety of Ways" My grandfather, Nunzio Mugavero, is the definition of strength. Unfortunately, my grandfather had a major stroke in 2012 and his short–term memory is completely wiped. Now my grandfather spends most of his days sitting in a retirement living complex listening to Frank Sinatra and asking my grandmother where the bathroom is in his apartment. This past Sunday my family and I celebrated his ninetieth birthday. At this party people told a variety of stories about my grandfather both funny and heartfelt. My biggest takeaway from this birthday was my realization of just how strong of a person my grandfather was and still is both literally and mentally. My grandfather truly is the strongest man I have known and his experiences have taught me that when life gets hard I must stay strong and persevere. Too start off, Nunzio Mugavero was born on October 23rd, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. His time of birth was exactly two years prior to the Great Depression. His parents had little money, were immigrants and had eleven children. Nunzio was the oldest of the eleven and was forced to help around the house always being given the hardest chores. The hardest chore being when he had to help deliver his youngest brother, Peter. My grandfather had no medical experience whatsoever, but when his mother went into labor and his dad was not around to help out my grandfather was brave enough to try and help out his mother in whatever way possible. Many times, as humans feel that there is an answer to everything, even when there is not. Even before I was born, my grandfather loved me. It was so hard for my mother to conceive me that I was known as a miracle baby to not only my mom and dad, but my grandparents as well. We spent much of our time together sitting outside watching the people go down the street, while he told me stories about my mom and how similar we were. • 39. My Grandfather My grandfather has gone for ten years. However, it was strange that he had often been in my dream until now. In my dream, his figure was so clear that I could touch him. He always held my hand and told me different fairy tales with a kind smile just like before. After several years of his death, I finally realized that this is how a person's life connects to another one no matter life is over or not. In the last few years of my grandfather's life, he got the Alzheimer's disease. It is a chronic disease acting as decline of intellect and apparatus and change of selfhood. Therefore, sometimes my grandfather was sober and amiable, but most of the time he was confused and irritable. He could not recognize his family members: my grandmother, my mother, even me. He always thought we were strangers, so we could not approach him. When he was ill, I hid in my room and furtively saw him lose his temper. He sat in a wheelchair and shouted to my mother. "Who are you! I want to go home! Let me back home!" "This is your home... I am your daughter..." my mother cried and responded. In just one year, this disease put my family into the depth of despair because we could not do anything for my grandfather and just watched him in pain and helplessness. In my memory, that was an unhappy experience which only had tear and sigh. During that period, I was still a child and the only thing I can do was to keep silent. My Grandfather, Joshua Jr. is very loyal, generous, and above all in my opinion, the best role model I could ever have. Here are just a few reasons and examples why he is who he is. My grandfather is loyal in all ways and in all perspectives. One can be a complete stranger to him and he will be there for you. He is a man who will do his best to help you out. • 45. Summary : Time Travel Paradox TIME TRAVEL PARADOX A paradox is a proposition that leads to a conclusion that seems somewhat senseless or logically unacceptable despite apparently sounding reasonable from acceptable premises. The statement may also seemingly sound self–contradictory or even absurd but when investigated or explained may prove to be genuine and quite well founded. Some paradoxes may be considered invaluable arguments but still play a significant role in promoting critical thinking. Paradoxes have led to the revelation of existing errors in definitions that were thought to be inflexible and meticulous, causing the re–examination of some axioms of mathematics and logic, proving it to be invaluable. An example of a paradox is in the contradiction of statements such as 'the previous sentence is false '; if this statement is true, then the sentence is false, making the statement true. However, the statement cannot be true and false at the same time, therefore making it impossible to tell if the statement is true or false as it would contradict itself. This endless cycle is referred to as vicious circularity. There exist many types of paradoxes. An example is that of the time paradox, also called the temporal paradox or time travel paradox. It consists of not just a single puzzle but a series of them, which shape and dictate our lives and destinies. Each distinct perspective towards time results in numerous benefits and costs. The Movie ' Whale Rider ' By Niki Caro In the movie "Whale Rider" by Niki Caro, the theme is subjugation of women and the main character Paikea manages to surpass the patriarchal beliefs so she is a winner which is good for the community and that makes for a happy ending. The main event of this movie is when the whales answer Paikea's call for help and end up stranded on the shore. The locals are unable to move the whales, after many attempts they give up and walk away with sadness. Then, Pai climbs up on the whale and rides it out to sea, making the rest of the whales follow. At that moment she is unafraid of dying and goes underwater with the whale. The whales mean a lot to their community because they believe that their ancestor Paikea was saved by the whales. In the movie, Paikea decides to live up to her grandfather's expectations and to do so she challenges the tradition by following her own path as a leader. An example of her determination is when she learns how to fight with a taiaha by spying on the lesson through the window when Koro had told her she couldn't learn it because she wasn't a boy. Her grandfather is the person with whom she is always in confrontation. In fact, when the Marae was beginning she sat at the front row. The mural can be seen from the highway on the side of a laundromat. The mural is called "Insomne de Amor" and was finished in 1999, then restored in 2009. All the realistic images on the mural are of my family. When the mural was in the process of being restored, my uncle had staged photos of us taken that he then turned into graphics before they were painted on the wall. The excerpt is of my grandfather wrapping his arms around my sister and I as we look up to him. He is wearing a superman shirt and has the sun haloing around his head radiating light to the rest of the mural. When the mural unveiled to the public there was a ceremony and to end holy water was handed out so those in attendance could bless the mural. From family values to back alley gossip, the citizens of Cold Sassy play the role of southern parody in society. On the outside it appears to be genuine, caring and communal environment, but just like any community, its roots grow far deeper than its outward appearance. This is not an accident either, as author Olive Ann Burns writes this novel, Cold Sassy Tree, to emphasize intentionally the crooked nature of small, southern towns, and by extension, southern heritage as a whole. Through her characters, Burns paints a playful picture of misconception, polarization, conformity, and perseverance, and their weaving in and out of the culture of her fictional town. It is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mill Town is, as its name boldly declares, the blue–collar hub of this southern sector. The citizens of Mill Town work the mill, which provides much of Cold Sassy's resources. Despite this relationship, the people of Cold Sassy see the people of Mill Town as lesser than themselves. When writing about his encounters with Lightfoot McLendon, Will states, "The girl didn't seem to have heard yet that nobody in Mill Town ever amounted to anything." (Burns 71) As much insight as this quote provides into the thought processes of not only Will, but into the whole of Cold Sassy, Will further illustrates the division when he discusses what people would think if they were to find out about his forbidden feelings for Lightfoot. "I went from hoping I'd see Lightfoot to hoping I wouldn't. It was one thing to like her at school and nobody know it. Here in Mill Town at my crosstie stage, folks would suspicion her if they saw me acting friendly." (Burns 70) It is clear from these statements that the people of Cold Sassy are heavily prejudiced against those that consider to be of a lower class. This causes extreme division among the people, even to the extent that they cannot associate with one another. While these examples of division are fairly obvious in the text of Cold Sassy Tree, the final source of division among the people is far more subliminal. There exists in the roots of Cold Sassy reliance upon tradition and cultural norms. They live by an unspoken ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. The Death Of My Grandfather Life is full endless possibilities but in order to make life a little easier is by giving up. Sacrifice is something important or value for the sake of other respect. The sacrifice I had made, was the death of my grandfather. My grandfather was the only person I look up to very closely because he understood me like no other. My grandfather lived in Puerto Rico and since I was six years old, we have done everything that he and I could have possibly think about such as, every night we would go to the beach, the park, the stores and enjoy the night outside in his yard. Our favorite place was just the background of his home because he had roosters and I would always help him feed them. Him and I just sat in the yard and talk for hours about our lives and we made many promises to each other. However, the only issue was that my grandfather lived in Puerto Rico and I lived in New York, so I only got to see him once a year. Sometimes I had to force my mother to let me go to Puerto Rico or for him to come to New York to spend the holidays together. My grandmother would get jealous sometimes because I use to always be with my grandfather, I always dependent on him for everything, but one day he was at the doctors and I didn't know what was wrong. He tells me everything and I realized he wasn't ready to tell me that he was dying because he knew I couldn't handle it and he was right. When I found out he was suffering from lung cancer I started taking care of him and helping ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. My Grandfather The most inspiring person I have in my life is my grandfather, Raing Chhorm. He is a father of 3 beautiful daughters. His wife, which is my grandmother, name is Heang Sok and my grandfather always put his family first before his wellbeing. This man Is the most prideful human being I know he never asks others for help. The reasons I'm so inspired by my grandfather is because he's openminded, courageous, loving. Before my grandfather was a father he was a Cambodian Buddhist monk. He was very big on helping others and as a job of a monk is to pass the teachings of buddha, such as reincarnation, to keep a steady mind or even how a person is supposed to be allowed to have chances to make them self–better. With being a monk, you go into a phase where you see yourself becoming more and more openminded. Where judgements weren't allowed to even be thought in your head. He's quick to anyone without even thinking twice on a person's intentions of trying to rob him or if he was helping an suspicious person. When being openminded your open to suggestions and new things, such as food, clothing, languages, etc. In the year off 2015, my grandfather was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. For some of you who do not know the function of your pancreas is to convert everything you eat into fuel for body's cells and also regulates blood sugar. The chances of fighting this cancer is 20% out of 100%. Some people get lucky and others don't have much luck, but the only thing you can do is to try to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Good Ole Day Research Paper I love to tell stories about my childhood. Looking back now, through all of my life's experiences, it almost feels like I was living in a fairy tale. It brings both joy and sadness to my heart when I share these memories with my daughter. The joy comes from remembering how things were back then and how those things impacted my life today. The sadness comes from knowing that she will never get to experience those things, therefore, she will only get to live them through me. Even now as a young woman, she will say to me from time to time, "mom, tell me a story about the Good Ole Days"! I grew up in a small town across the Florida/Georgia line. The trees towered over the dirt roads like canopies and you could follow a creek in the woods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Saturday was cleanup day and I helped my grandfather shovel the sawdust off of the meat market floor. After the morning rush of customers, I took the shovel and began my journey. For most kids, this was a lot of hard work, but I loved being my grandfather's little helper. I would take the giant shovel and slide it across the floor, scooping more sawdust than I could pick up. I would spill half of it back onto the floor. After the old sawdust was picked up, we would put new sawdust down so the floor would be nice and clean. It was time for my favorite part of the day. After we cleaned up everything, my grandfather and I would walk downtown to the Dime Store so I could spend my savings! The Dime Store was like the Dollar General store is to us today. To me it was the biggest toy store in the whole world! My grandfather would say "ok, you can pick two things, that's it". He knew he had to set a limit or my arms would be loaded down with items when we reached the cash register. I would have spent my limit and more. My grandfather taught me not to spend all of my money. He would tell me, "save some for a rainy day". I often wondered what that meant. As I placed my items on the counter, my grandfather said "are you sure that is what you want"? It was the same items every month, a bag of play money and a new receipt book, so I could pretend I was a cashier like the lady that worked at the grocery ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Inter Generational Interview Intergenerational Interview Report "The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance."– Alan Watts Throughout history; more specifically throughout different generations, we as human beings have been subject to a certain amount of change within our society. As time goes by change is almost inevitable among a nation. Change has occurred throughout history due to specific events that have a ripple effect upon individuals. Whether the change is a result of advancing technology, social climate, or foreign influence there is little chance of preventing the effect it will have on society. It is difficult to argue that we have not seen a paradigm shift in social attitudes from generation to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When asked about his sense of community during his childhood, my Grandfather spoke about how much his family and his neighbours relied on each other to survive and to keep each other in good spirits. They helped farm each others land and in the end would split what was harvested. It was not until doing further research that it became obvious to me just how important the interdependence of this tight knit community was to their survival. Between 1943 and 1945 the Dutch people faced a horrible famine that killed nearly 30,000 Dutch civilians which is an astronomical number for a two years span. (Hitchcock, 98) Seeing as my Grandfather was so young at the time he was not able to remember much about his times during the war, so instead I conducted some research on what life might have been for a Dutch civilian during that time period. During the war time the Dutch government was completely ran by Nazis and as a result many rules were implemented that were of little benefit to the people of the country. For example men from ages 18–35 were forced to work in munitions factories and do field work, Dutch people were handed out "ration cards" that would limit the amount of food they could consume within the week. (Van der Zee, 3) Evidently this was a difficult time for the Dutch people so I decided to then change the topic of discussion and ask my Grandfather about his teenage years. To kick off the discussion the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. My Grandfather Sometimes it is difficult for kids to become really close with their grandparents, but for me it was easy. Ever since I met my grandpa, I have had this connection with Gramps that has just continued to grow. Most people have nicknames for their grandparents, but for me it is plain and simple, just Gramps. To me, he isn't just my grandpa, he is one of my friends because of the impact he has had on my life. Gramps has turned me into who I am today. He has brown eyes that remind me of sweet chocolate, they are always so easy to picture in my mind. I could stare into his eyes for days and it would never get old. However, he has thick old glasses that cover his rich brown eyes. To go along with his eyes, he is always wearing his polo shirts, with all different types of khaki pants. His favorite polo is his pink polo, and when he wears it he always says, "real men wear pink." Every time he says that, I still laugh no matter how many times that he has said it to me. To go along with his outfit, he wears old brown shoes all the time unless he is doing athletics. One early morning, when I was ten, I woke up to my mom saying, "Sean your grandparents are going to the soccer tournament in Florida." From that moment on I realized how much Gramps cared for me, and him being there for me impacted who I was as a soccer player and as a person. However, the good news was, that was the beginning of the best trip of my life. We woke up at 7 am for our 9:30 am flight out of Cleveland Hopkins ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. My Grandfather As a young man, I was raised by my Grandparents. It was from my Grandfather that I learned how to be a man. From him, I acquired the value of a great work ethic, the importance of truthfulness, and of living a life that not only you but, of one that your family could be proud. My Grandfather would always say something impressing that having a good name would carry me further than anything else in life. There is an essay in Ideas Across Time: Classic And Contemporary Readings For Composition, by Igor Webb, in which Socrates makes a statement that reminds me of the words that I would often hear from my Grandfather. Plato writes, in Socrate's Defense (Apology), after being sentenced to death, Socrates tells the jury that "nothing can harm a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a young boy, I would often hear the older men tell me that there are "repercussions and consequences" for everything. While in my wild youth I never really understood this, until faced with having to. As I matured, I would later discover my internal moral compass, and it would consistently point me in the direction of the talks with my Grandfather for guidance. Eventually, through the experiences of life, the hills and the valleys, my determination to apply what I learned from my youth would have me arrive at a place in my life where my wife and children refer to me as "a good man." What a humbling honor that is. I am thankful for the life that my Grandfather lived. While alive, my Grandfather impacted those around him positively. He brought out the best in others and sought to make a difference wherever he could; I choose to do the same. It is primarily because of him that I eventually pursued a career in law enforcement. I desired a vocation that was honorable; one that served and defended others. Law Enforcement allowed me to walk out in life the values that he instilled in me. He has been gone for more than thirty–five years now, however to this day, when people speak of him, the first thing they mention is that he was a good man. It is through the life and death of my Grandfather that I understand what Socrates was attempting to leave with those who had just condemned him. • 71. Dave Barry Grandfather Is it important to know the life lessons that your grandparents have learned. A grandfather named Dave has a grandson that he wrote an important letter to. His grandsons name was Dylan. Dylan was not old enough to read the letter yet, but Dave wrote it anyway. In the letter Dave wrote to Dylan, Dave was telling Dylan about some of the things he has learned throughout his lifetime. He started by telling dylan that just because everyone believes in one thing it does not make them all correct. Dave Barry's short story "Dave Barry teaches his grandson life's lessons –beginning with the ketchup" is a high level comedy that uses wordplay and comic situations to convey the idea that although everyone thinks one thing it does not mean that everyone is correct. In "Dave Barry teaches his grandson life's lessons –beginning with the ketchup" the author uses high comedy to write a letter to his grandson. The author uses situations that would only be understood by people who have been in the situations. Most of the people who have experienced these situations are people such as teenagers and adults. • 75. The Day Of My Grandfather From the moment we are born, we begin to die. This is a piece of information we all learn in life but for some, we learn this lesson too soon. When I was 12 years old, I learned that my grandfather was very sick with a threatening illness that would snatch the air from his lungs. My grandfather had Stage IV lung cancer. Over the course of the Summer of 2006, I watched the once statuesque man that was my grandfather grow frail and disappear before my eyes. If I was not in his home, we were at the hospital or doctor's office running test after test. Each time a different angel with scrubs, better known as a nurse, would come into his room to check on him. Whenever these angels were around, I felt a sense of calm come over the room. Being ... I did not, at the moment, understand the magnitude of what was occurring around me. Everyday life continued without a blip. My grandparents and I would go to the movies, the beach, and to local diners. The first few weeks were filled with laughs and love until one day my grandfather collapsed while out at the store with my grandmother and me. The ambulance came to take him to the local hospital where he was admitted and later seen by his oncologist who told him that he did not have much time left. I started to understand what was happening and had a nurse hold my hand while I cried in the hallway. I was scared for the unknown for him and my family. "What would the world be like without my grandfather in it?", "Who would be there to take care of my grandmother?" a million questions darted through my head but I felt the uncontrollable need to always be strong in his presence. The end of summer was filled with an endless cycle of doctors appointments and hospital visits. Each time a different nurse would grace my family with their presence. They always had skillful hands when drawing blood and a gentle touch when comforting one of my family members. I would spend much of my time talking to these unbelievably kind people and they always had just that extra moment to spare for me. On August 4th, 2006, on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. My Grandfather I hardly ever think about the lives my grand–parents and great–grand–parents led. Maybe this hig tech world has desensitized us to our emotions, or maybe we have lost touch with our spiritual selves. Whatever the case, it seems that in today's modern world, most people don't think or worry about people who lived in a different time than today. Why should my ancestors be of importance to me? After thinking about this topic, I began to realize the importance of knowing more about my relatives. Sometimes a family tree is written for reasons other than just being able to trace your roots. Obviously, if it were not for my relatives I could not have existed. The gift of life is indeed a gift, a gift I believe is only given to us once. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some people become popular because they are bad, others become popular because they are in the right place at the right time. My grandfather was popular because he made a difference in many people's lives. Whether it be from doing people a favor or giving them advice, he was always there for his friends and family. Someday, I hope people will see me the same way they saw him. Seeing the many people at his funeral was enough to make me wonder what kind of life he had, but all I really knew about him was from my own experience. I used to catch the bus to my grandparents house almost everyday after school. Since they were already retired, they were the ones who took care of me after school while my parents were at work. I remember the feelings of anticipation I had while riding the bus. I couldn't wait to go to my grandparent's house. I would always walk two blocks from where the bus dropped me off and then feel a sense of relief upon arriving at the house. Memories of then strike me as odd now, for I have grown so much since I was in that routine, but the memories are still strong. I distinctly remember the small black gate and the cement walk way that leads to the steps and the front door. Upon entering the front door, how could I forget the living room? It had an early 20th century design as did most of house. The parts that were newer were added on as my grandparents had children. The house still felt like an old house to me, anyway.
