Mentorship Reflection
In the Navy and Marine Corps providing feedback and counseling to Sailors and Marines is a
critical skill that every leader must possess. For this assignment, I was tasked with providing
counseling and guidance to a struggling 3/C Midshipmen in my company on how they could
improve in meeting the standards with regards to morally, mentally, and physically. For the
counseling, I chose 3/C Burns who was struggling academically with a D at six weeks in
Thermodynamics, a major course in his matrix. With this Midshipman struggling to meet the
mission mentally, I was keen on attacking the issue before it developed into a major problem by
providing advice, counseling, and a personal story of being in his place before. After overhearing in
company area that MIDN 3/C Burns was struggling academically I decided to step in. I approached
3/C Burns and asked him if I could talk to him about his grades later that night, in which he agreed.

On the positive side, I believe that by providing the struggling 3/C with a plan to adequately address
his problem with outside resources that could help assist him in raising his grade was helpful. That
night when I concluded counseling I was certain that 3/C Burns would begin to utilize the outside
resources that I had mentioned. On the other hand, I quickly noticed that I had an area in which I
could have improved. The area I believe could have been improved was the counseling coming off
as, discipline. I say this for when I talked with Burns in the hallway about setting up the counseling
he gave me a weird reaction as if he was in trouble. This continued when we met, as grades are often
times a sore subject with students and telling him to get assistance could have been seen as a
punishment for having a bad

Service Academy Application Analysis
The reason why the service academy is where I want to attend is because after observing both of my
sisters, attend and graduate from University of Michigan: Ann Arbor, a public university. The
comparison between service academy and public university is distinguishable, the camaraderie
shown at the academy is the biggest factor as well as opportunities available and the feeling of the
campus. First, camaraderie at the academy is my initial reason, how teamwork between the
midshipman is primary instinct and the willingness to help without asking or being the first thought
is astonishing. Second, the opportunities to be able to help in a greater extent is another reason, my
purpose of pursuing higher education is to become an epidemiologist in

Sexual Assault And Rape During The World Today
Two of the most serious public health and social issues faced in the world today are sexual assault
and rape. Sexual assault and rape are words that are often used interchangeably but the terms have
two distinct definitions. The United States Department of Justice defines sexual assault as any type
of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Sexual
activities that fall under the definition of sexual assault include forced sexual intercourse, forcible
sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape.
Research in this area is extremely important because so many people are uneducated about sexual
assault and rape. For the purpose of this paper, I conducted your research by utilizing news articles,
empirical articles, the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program (UCR) and the United States'
Department of Justice and several websites who advocate against sexual assault and rape. In
addition, I included an article and its methodology of the peer reviewed article entitled Trauma
Exposure, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Problem Drinking in Sexual Assault Survivors. In
accordance with the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program (UCR) and the National Incident–
Based Reporting System (NIBRS) rape is no longer defined as "The carnal knowledge of a female
forcibly and against her will" but is now defined as the "Penetration, no matter how slight, of the
vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex

Aristotle And Virtue
"Aristotle and the Ethics of Virtue and Character" explains the "theories" that make up a moral
situation. First, we have expectations for the outcome of a moral situation to be utilitarian or
sometimes produce another desirable result. We also have restraints that govern the actions we make
to produce those outcomes. Last, certain character traits define who is prepared to perform the
necessary actions and be content with the results. Aristotle's "The Moral Virtues" explains how the
mean of an excess and a deficit is the virtue. It is nearly impossible to act perfectly within the mean,
which is why Aristotle recommends that one keep away from the extreme that is more opposed to
the mean, be wary of pleasant things, and notice the direction (toward excess or deficit) toward
which one, personally, will tend. Finally, in "Habit and Virtue," Aristotle defines virtue as a result of
habituation. Character is developed through the repetition of activities, and therefore the aim of the

Mckenna, believes that flexibility is the most important virtue for a 3/C midshipman. He explained
this by noting the unique place of a third class in a company. First, a 3/C must use the followership
learned as a plebe in order to learn from the upperclassmen who run the company, especially since
the youngsters were shotgunned and are having to learn an entirely new company system. But, along
with following the 2/C and 1/C, a 3/C is immediately expected to lead a plebe, which requires
flexibility in itself. A 3/C must find the line between being a friend and a superior to the plebe,
sometimes switching between the roles. Mr. Mckenna sees the increase in freedom of 3/C as a
difficult increase in responsibility because you suddenly expected to follow and lead but without as
many people constantly watching. If a 3/C is rigid in her ways, she will be unable to follow, learning
a new company's ways, and unable to lead, changing her ways to help develop someone other than

How Does Westerfeld Use Literary Elements In Leviathan
The use of literary elements is widespread in Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. This is shown when
Westerfeld uses dramatic irony to highlight a character's cluelessness. At a certain instance the
character, Alek, is comparing himself to another character, Dylan. Westerfeld writes, "In a way
Dylan was the sort of boy Alek would have wanted to be if he hadn't been the son of an archduke"
(327). This statement is ironic due to the fact that the "boy" Alek is referring to is actually a girl
masquerading as a boy. At this point in the book, the reader is fully aware that Dylan is actually a
girl, but none of the other characters know, thus making it an instance of dramatic irony. The author
likely chose to use this literary element to remind the reader that the characters have been left in the
dark about Dylan's true gender. This use of dramatic irony aided in reminding the reader about one
of the larger story elements present in Leviathan. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the story, Alek and his allies see some of their enemies ahead of them attempting to locate
their position. To avoid being spotted or worse, they are forced to walk very slowly in their
mechanical walking–vehicle. To further emphasize the low speed of of the machine, Westerfeld
writes, "With the engines at quarter power, the massive feet moved slowly–––like walking through
syrup" (169). This statement is a simile because it compares the low power of the engines to being
submerged in syrup using the connecting word "like." Westerfeld chose to compare these two things
because the mechanical walker was moving very slowly, just like how something would move
through a thick substance like syrup. To conclude, this use of a simile helped to show a clearer

Thomas Cochrane 's Life And Life
Thomas Cochrane was born on December 14, 1775 in Annsfield, Scotland. He was the eldest son of
Archibald and Anna Gilchrist Cochrane, and had three brothers: Archibald, Basil and William.
Thomas received little to no formal schooling, which taught him to be self–reliant and practical.
Thomas shared his eccentricity and intellectual curiosity with his father, a scientist and inventor. In
November of 1784, Anna Cochrane passed away. Soon after, Thomas was sent to Mr. Chauvet's
military academy in Kensington, London. His father had secured this role for Thomas through
aristocratic connections, however, it was not Thomas' dream. In 1792, Thomas finished military
schooling, but decided to join the navy instead. Thankfully for Thomas, his uncle, ... Show more

When Thomas came aboard, the Hind had been ordered to prepare to go south. In fall of 1793, his
uncle learned he had been appointed to command the Thetis. The crew was transferred and Thomas
was given the opportunity to prepare the ship for sea. Had inherited from his father an intense
passion for understanding how things worked and how they could be improved. Over the next two
years, Thomas learned all aspects of a ship, including how to do each specialist trade and how to
handle a boat in all weather conditions. This practical working knowledge of a ship and seamanship
would prove to benefit him greatly when he commanded his own vessel. On April 13, 1795,
Cochrane joined the Africa, a 64–gun ship. He spent 5 weeks as acting lieutenant. He eventually
reboarded the Thetis as acting second lieutenant and waited for an official promotion. These skills
allowed Thomas to take the lieutenant 's exams, which he passed in 1796. Soon after, Cochrane was
appointed as lieutenant on the flagship the Resolution. It was an extremely peaceful boat; the
officers got along and the crew was enjoyed their work, but cochrane understood that promotion was
not likely aboard the Resolution. In 1798, he reboarded his uncles frigate and sailed for EnglanD
where he was appointed eighth lieutenant on Lord Keith's flagship HMS Barfleur, serving in the
Mediterranean.
Because of his natural independent disposition, Cochrane never failed to irritate some of the

Naval Academy Application Essay Sample
Since I was young I have had the upmost admiration for our nation's elite fighting force. I was
captivated by the idea of being a part of an organization comprised of proud Americans with shared
values of selflessness, honor, and loyalty. I was raised by two devoted parents with strong principles
who dedicated their lives to serving others in their respective medical careers. At a young age I
joined the cub scouts followed by a transition into boy scouts where I was instilled with the values
of honor, duty and teamwork. I actively served my community developing a passion for continued
service. Fortunately, I was accepted to the Naval Academy and I set out with my twin brother to
Annapolis. We are the first in our family to join the military and hope to make military service a
family tradition.
While attending the Naval Academy, I majored in quantitative economics and served in a variety of
leadership positions. As a midshipman I learned invaluable lessons about both how to be an
effective Naval Officer of compassion and character as well as how far I can push myself personally
and professionally. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

solving problems throughout my career. In mathematics, I learned the languages of linear algebra,
multi–dimensional calculus, probability and statistics. In these courses I used mathematical
techniques to solve optimization problems that can directly relate to logistical and scheduling
problems in the military. It was common for my mathematic and economic classes to have group

All of us played intramural sports for around three hours. After playing a few games of touch

never had the opportunity to be surrounded by such a diverse crowd. Once we had finally finished
up and headed back to our rooms, we had the chance to meet our roommates and then our squad.
The seminar had us grouped into three increasingly smaller elements: company, platoon, and squad,
with squad being the tightest knit consisting of around six people. I soon discovered that I was lucky
for the reason that my roommate and I were squad mates. The entire week, any candidate I asked
were not in the same squad with their roommate. Once we had time to become acquainted, we were
escorted to dinner, where our squad leader began to learn about us, and we became closer with her.
The following few days were challenging, but we fell into sort of a routine. We woke up early,
around 5:00 A.M, then we would jog to the football field and have our morning PT. After that we
would grab a shower and head to breakfast. Academic classes followed that and then lunch. These
two days proved to be the dullest and provided the least excitement; however, there were

For our shortened version, the Trials would run from 7:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. At breakfast that
morning, the excitement at the table was obvious, especially once our squad leader got out her
camouflage face paint out and started to put it all over herself and us, making us look as though we
were true warriors. From there, we made our way through the early morning mist to the place where
our company would be starting at: Hospital Point. Our squad leader had told us that the most
difficult phase would probably be the one known as "Wet & Sandy," and also that we would be
starting in that particular phase. Basically it consisted of a few PT warm–up workouts, and then on
to the main event. We linked arms on a two–feet wide beach and walked out into the river. Once the
water, which was surprisingly warmed us all up because of the cold air, reached our thighs, we were
instructed to sit. We proceeded to do thirty sit ups in the water as a unit because our arms were still
linked. We then walked back to the beach and rolled in the sand until we were covered, becoming

Essay On WEPO
The new Weapons Petty Officer (WEPO) requirement in the Ordnance manual is detrimental to the
Patrol boat fleet without a Maritime Enforcement Specialist (ME) or Gunners Mate (GM) billet. The
new requirement of a WEPO having to be an E–6 at an afloat unit with three or less officers is not
beneficial to the 87' cutter fleet. Keep in mind that units without a ME or GM will traditionally have
a Boatswains Mate (BM) as the WEPO. With this recent change in the ordnance manual, the
Operation Petty Officer (OPS) on board 87's is now required to be designated as the WEPO. This
creates three unforeseen issues to include, but not limited to Training, Man–power, and extra
duties/responsibilities. First, let's glance at the training aspect of becoming a WEPO in today's Coast
Guard. The weapons system program is tracked by a navy program called the "3M" program. This
system has only been relevant to the coast guard since the last 5–6 years. The training takes
approximately 8+ hours to complete just to become certified to run the maintenance program which
in itself is not trouble–free to complete. Once the training is complete and you are certified to run
the 3M program, you must now build your maintenance schedules which are extremely time
consuming and tedious. This is just the administrative portion not including physically conducting
the required maintenance. The training is inadequate at best, to become proficient with the 3M
program since it is difficult to comprehend in nature and

Naval ROTC Career Analysis
As a midshipman in the Buccaneer Battalion, I have spent the last two years of my Naval ROTC

self–improvement is no simple feat, I know it is a worthy effort. Rather ironically, adversity actually
proved to be an outstanding testament to my commitment to a naval career, and when I was found to
have a medical condition I rose to the challenge. Since my initial diagnosis, I have undergone

Plebe Monologue
In preparation for writing this letter, I took the liberty of investigating the life of a Midshipman,
particularly the life of a Plebe. As I sifted through the details of your unimaginably rigorous
summer, my mind swelled with a pervasive sentiment of admiration for you and your fellow Plebes.
Strength, fortitude, courage, selflessness, and genius come in many forms, and what is perhaps the
most awe–inspiring characteristic of the Plebe summer is that it encapsulates all of these intangibles
and more in a highly concentrated, intense manner. Trying to consider and internalize just how
courageous you are is a frivolous exercise; I will never comprehend the commitment you make,
never comprehend the devotion you give, never comprehend the selflessness you exude, never
comprehend the fortitude you possess. Because of my academic successes and social priorities,
several individuals have celebrated me as a "motivated" and "nice" or "good" person, but when I
compare myself to you, your motivation and goodness indubitably surpass my own, and for that fact
I gain nothing but an unquantifiable respect and admiration for you; you are an extraordinary

Regulate Use of Cell Phones on the Road
When a cell phone goes off in a classroom or at a concert, people are irritated, but at least lives are
not endangered. When on the road, however, irresponsible cell phone users are more than irritating:
They are putting our lives at risk. Many of us have witnessed drivers so distracted by dialing and
chatting that they resemble drunk drivers, weaving between lanes, for example, or nearly running
down pedestrians in crosswalks. A number of bills to regulate use of cell phones on the road have
been introduced in state legislatures, and the time has come to push for their passage. Regulation is
needed because drivers using phones are seriously impaired and because laws on negligent and
reckless driving are not sufficient to punish offenders ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The latter statistic is interesting, for it suggests that those who carry phones in their cars may tend to
be more negligent or prone to distractions of all kinds than those who do not. Some groups have
argued that state traffic laws make legislation regulating cell phone use unnecessary. Sadly, this is
not true. Laws on traffic safety vary from state to state, and drivers distracted by cell phones can get
off with light punishment even when they cause fatal accidents. Although the midshipman
mentioned earlier was charged with vehicular manslaughter for the deaths of John and Carole Hall,
the judge was unable to issue a verdict of guilty. Under Maryland law, he could only find the
defendant guilty of negligent driving and impose a $500 fine (Layton C1). Such a light sentence is
not unusual. The driver who killed Morgan Pena in Pennsylvania received two tickets and a $50
fine––and retained his driving privileges (Pena). In Georgia, a young woman distracted by her
phone ran down and killed a two–year–old; her sentence was ninety days in boot camp and five
hundred hours of community service (Ippolito J1). The families of the victims are understandably
distressed by laws that lead to such light sentences. When certain kinds of driver behavior are shown
to be especially dangerous, we wisely draft special laws making them illegal and imposing specific
punishments. Running red lights, failing to stop for a school bus, and drunk driving are obvious

Reflection Of Master And Commander
Master and Commander, produced in 2003 is about the Napoleonic Wars. Although not based on a
true story, Master and Commander shows a historically accurate depiction of life on a warship. The
film is set in the Atlantic Ocean, headed towards the Pacific. After receiving orders to "burn, sink, or

ship. After the a long run of the Ships evading each other, the HMS Surprise finally takes over the
Acheron. Throughout the duration of this film, many Midshipman are portrayed doing their daily
duties, during a time of war. The Midshipman vary in age and backgrounds, but are all loyal to their
captain. While under fire, many of the midshipmen were tested in strength, perseverance, the ability
to lead and follow directions in intense situations. Having only been a Midshipman for a semester, I

Summary: Impacts Of The Nicaraguan Canal
Impacts of the Nicaraguan Canal The U.S. Navy currently possesses the world's largest fleet in the
world. China, however, has been investing hundreds of billions of dollars each year into its military
and power projecting defenses. It is estimated that the Chinese navy's fleet will outnumber the U.S.
by 2020. Not only is China expanding in sheer numbers, but it is also expanding its assertion for
dominance in the Western Hemisphere. Two years ago, Nicaragua granted a Chinese company the
right to build an alternative to the Panama Canal. When finished, the canal will stretch along the
entirety of Nicaragua, dividing the country in two, to allow large vessels to travel through it. Less
than a month ago, official construction of the canal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wang Jing, a multi–billionaire from China, was offered a 100–year concession by the Nicaraguan
government to build the Canal. The project is estimated to cost between $40–50 billion which Jing
claims to raise through his unnamed "outside investors" (foreign policy). This alone is enough for
skeptics, as well as the U.S., to suspect that the Chinese government is secretly funding the project.
In fact, there is reason to believe that this canal will not just be used for trade, but for a Chinese
strategic advantage in Central America. China has been pouring money into their own navy over the
past few years; its fleet is projected to boast "about 82 submarines...within five to eight years"
(defensetech). At present day, China still maintains more than double of the U.S.'s supply of
submarines. The canal's physical dimensions show that it will be "28 meters [deep]...enough for
Chinese submarines to quickly and covertly cross between...oceans" (foreign policy). The Panama
Canal, by contrast, restricts vessels traveling through it by about 12 meters. There is absolutely no
reason for the Nicaraguan canal to be 28 meters deep when it comes to trading and exporting
purposes; this makes it seem even more believable for the Chinese to use it for strategic purposes.
Compounding this information with the recent and drastic growth of the Chinese fleet, it is no
wonder why the U.S. is concerned. Another reason for suspecting the Chinese government's
involvement is the lack of knowledge about the project leader, Wang Jing. Reportedly, he earned his
billions of dollars in the telecommunications industry in a company, also run by the government.
This political tie to the Chinese government is yet another supporting factor to the alleged intentions
of the country's military. It is important for the U.S. to keep an eye on

United States Naval Academy
(USNA)
The United states naval academy is a school in Annapolis, Maryland at Fort Severn. It is not only
built on top of Fort Severn but also built on the base blocks of advancement and resilience to
achieve higher goals. USNA has one of the greatest histories of any colleges. Starting in 1845, the
institution was only a miniscule 10 acres to its now 338. As well as they had important dates to
progress academically and including women into midshipmen.

The institution first started as just a Naval School on 10 acres in Annapolis, Maryland. The location
of the school was originally intended to keep the students excluded from the temptations and
distractions that necessarily connect with a large and populous city environment. In 1850 the Naval
School became the United States Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effect requiring
midshipmen to study at the Academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer. The U.S.
Navy grew over the years and with that, the Academy expanded with it. The campus of 10 acres
increased to 338. The original student body of 50 midshipmen grew to a brigade size of 4,000.
Modern granite buildings replaced the old wooden structures of Fort Severn. In 1933, the naval
academy started to award bachelor degrees in sciences. The Academy later replaced a fixed
curriculum taken by all midshipmen with the present core curriculum plus 18 major fields of study.
In 1976, they took a large step and started to accept women into the midshipmen program. Even

The Dangers Of Texting And Car Driving
When a cell phone goes off at an event that is meant to be silent, everybody looks and gives an
inside look at that person, but at least our lives are not endangered. While we are on the road,
careless cellphone users are more than annoying, they are putting our lives at risk! Most of us have
seen some people behind the wheel of a car driving as if they are drunk, when really they are
texting... They're putting our lives at risk. We all have witnessed distracted drivers that can't drive
between the lines or even run off the road. There has been many laws that has been passed that
prohibits texting and driving, but they all seem to be ignored by many people. A number of bills to
regulate use of cellphones on the road have been introduced in state legislatures, and the time has
come to push for their passage. Regulation is needed because drivers using phones are seriously
impaired and because laws on negligent and careless driving are not sufficient to punish offenders.
No one can deny that cell phones have caused traffic deaths and injuries. Cell phones were
implicated in three fatal accidents in November 1999 alone. Early in November, two–year–old
Morgan Pena was killed by a driver distracted by his cell phone. Morgan's mom, Patti Pena, reports
that the driver "ran a stop sign at 45 mph, broadsided my vehicle and killed Morgan as she sat in her

Why Democracy Robert Dahl Summary
No matter where one goes there will always be a set of rules that govern what behaviors are
acceptable, and therefore create a certain society around that. Robert Dahl wrote the essay entitled
"Why Democracy?" to explain the effects of government own its citizens. The Midshipman
Regulations are no exception to influencing the society of the regiment. They create a society that
closely mirrors the society Dahl envisions in his essay. The Midshipman Regulations intentionally
create a certain kind of atmosphere that provides an outlet for moral responsibility, to develop as a
person, but at the same time restricts numerous freedoms. Dahl's idea of a democratic society

Dahl envisions a society "that insures its citizens a broad range of personal freedom...," whereas the
Midshipmen Regulations certainly do not grant numerous freedoms like Dahl would have
envisioned (101). In a pure democracy everyone has a say, so no one will willingly give up their
personal freedoms and rights. The regulations only work because the midshipmen agree to follow
rules like Plebes shall not talk in the hallways, Delano, or outdoors. Dahl's society with abundant
freedom is advantageous in the long run, whereas the society created from the Midshipman
Regulations is superior in the short term. If one is subject to strict, relentless rule, they are bound to
rebel such as what lead to the American Revolution, hence Dahl's society is better for the long term.
Now looking at the regulations, it builds character and toughness, but after a certain period it
becomes impractical and counterproductive like writing the "Standards of Conducts" five times. For
that reason, the Midshipmen regulations become less strict the longer they are here so that the
midshipmen do not go insane. Both of the two societies have different views on freedom, but still
produce people of character. The two societies formed from Dahl's perfect democracy and the
Midshipmen Regulations have several of the same characteristics, such as practicing moral
responsibility and developing as a person. However,

Preparing To Lead: My Leadership Action Plan
Preparing to Lead: My Leadership Action Plan
As a midshipman at the Naval Academy, my Leadership Purpose Statement is to influence those I
lead through my integrity and civility to accomplish the mission to develop them mentally, morally
and physically as future military leaders.
I define integrity as "doing the right thing even when no one is looking". My father, a 1986 graduate
of the Naval Academy and a Naval Supply Corps Officer in the fleet always said this to me and my
sister as we were growing up. Being raised with that motto, I have always tried to live by that level
of integrity. In our lessons on integrity, I took away that "Doing what is right, and being willing to
defend our actions, even at the sacrifice of ourselves, is the ... Show more content on

The experiences I learned from his leadership style will help me define my leadership as a First
Class midshipman in the Brigade. My father communicates well and helps the people he is around
have purpose, direction and motivation. He is no longer in the military. He now leads over a hundred
people at a consulting company that supports the Department of Defense and Homeland Security.
His integrity and civility make his leadership effective which has resulted in his business sector
being very successful and efficient. The people that work for him tell me how much they enjoy
working for him because of the way he makes them feel about themselves and as a team. Integrity
and civility are not easy traits to attain as a leader. Stephen Carter even characterizes that to attain
both integrity and civility is a struggle to attain and that you must become a student of both to
successfully lead with both. It takes self sacrifice and effort to do the right thing when no one is
looking. It takes strong character and discipline to treat others the way you would like to be treated.
I know how I felt growing up in my father's household and I see how he treats the people that work
for him. I have learned integrity and civility from him and although I have only been able to
demonstrate it to my fellow plebes up to this point at the Naval Academy, I plan to continue to
enhance these traits in my leadership style as a Youngster and eventually as a Firstie. I believe
people respond to the way they are treated by their leader. As a future leader at the Naval Academy I
believe both integrity and civility are traits that will help me successfully lead and successfully
fulfill my Leadership Purpose

Being An Effective Leader For Your People
When asked to envision myself in a future leadership role, the first thing that comes to mind is my
future self as a first class midshipman, simply because that will be the first actual role I will get to
assume. Exactly what billet I would hold is hard to say, but I do not believe the position is all that
important. What is important, I feel, is how you treat those around you and those under you.
However, for the sake of writing, I will assume I will be a squad leader. Throughout this course, we
have discussed multiple parts of leadership that are central to being an effective leader. While each
part we have studied is different, they all have the same idea: being an effective leader for your
people. I will best be prepared to succeed by putting to practice these different parts and focusing on
their development for the future. Specifically, those leadership traits I would aim to develop are the
ability to reflect better and servant leadership. An important part of leadership, as we deemed, is
one's ability to reflect: to learn from previous or current situations, and to put to practice what you
have learned. Reflection does not have to be a long, drawn–out process that requires hours of your
time or journaling. Though these things can be a part of reflection, reflecting only has to take a
moment. The point of reflection is to analyze a certain situation by taking a step back, looking
through a different scope, and realizing that which could have been done differently.

Personal Narrative: My Growing Up Military
I grew up military. I grew up not knowing everything my step–father did and learning to accept that
I never would. I grew up to extra limitations. I grew up having to look respectable at all times. I
grew up to doing what I was told and not being able to ask why. Asking why was a luxury I never
had. The move out was always talked about as some great relief, about how I was supposed to be so
carefree and able to do as I pleased for once. I was always told to save my rebellious years for until
after I left as it was supposed to only affect my future but as I discussed before, my actions have a

Mobile Phone Uses : Safety And The Use Of Cell Phones
When a cell phone goes off in a classroom or at a concert, we are irritated, but at least our lives are
not endangered. When we are on the road, however, irresponsible cell phone users are more than
irritating: They are putting our lives at risk. Many of us have witnessed drivers so distracted by
dialing and chatting that they resemble drunk drivers, weaving between lanes, for example, or nearly
running down pedestrians in crosswalks. A number of bills to regulate use of cell phones on the road
have been introduced in state legislatures, and the time has come to push for their passage.
Regulation is needed because drivers using phones are seriously impaired and because laws on
negligent and reckless driving are not sufficient to punish offenders. No one can deny that cell
phones have caused traffic deaths and injuries. Cell phones were implicated in three fatal accidents
in November 1999 alone. Early in November, two–year–old Morgan Pena was killed by a driver
distracted by his cell phone. Morgan's mother, Patti Pena, reports that the driver "ran a stop sign at
45 mph, broadsided my vehicle and killed Morgan as she sat in her car seat." A week later,
corrections officer Shannon Smith, who was guarding prisoners by the side of the road, was killed
by a woman distracted by a phone call (Besthoff). On Thanksgiving weekend that same month, John
and Carole Hall were killed when a Naval Academy midshipman crashed into their parked car. The
driver said in court that when he looked up from the cell phone he was dialing, he was three feet
from the car and had no time to stop (Stockwell B8). Expert testimony, public opinion, and even
cartoons suggest that driving while phoning is dangerous. Frances Bents, an expert on the relation
between cell phones and accidents, estimates that between 450 and 1,000 crashes a year have
someconnection to cell phone use (Layton C9). In a survey published by Farmers Insurance Group,
87% of those polled said that cell phones affect a driver's ability, and 40% reported having close
calls with drivers distracted by phones. Many cartoons have depicted the very real dangers of
driving while distracted (see Fig. 1). Scientific research confirms the dangers of using phones while

Explain Why I Want To Attend A Naval Academy
I want to attend the United States Naval Academy for a variety of reasons, but my primary
motivation is that I want to serve as an officer in the United States Navy. The concept of purpose
best describes why I want to become a Naval Officer. Throughout high school, I have cherished my
opportunities to lead teams towards the accomplishment of meaningful goals, such as collecting
life–saving blood for nearby hospitals, and assisting struggling students and community members.
These service opportunities are deeply meaningful to me, but as I have learned from my grandfather,
who served in the U.S. Army during World War Two, my step–father, a retired U.S. Air Force

Naval Academy offers an exceptional education and impressive academic internships with
institutions such as NASA & Boeing and summer training cruises within the Navy itself. These
challenging opportunities will enable me to further develop my leadership & critical thinking skills.
I have successfully used these skills in the past, but a Naval Academy education will further refine
them, allowing me to serve my country fully, both on active duty and in the years to follow. In
September, I had the opportunity to visit the Naval Academy for a "Candidate Visit Weekend."
During my two–night visit, I was paired with a current midshipman, whom I accompanied to
classes, meals, and a sports practice. Personally experiencing daily life at the Academy and meeting
current midshipmen has reinforced my desire to join their ranks. The most inspiring thing about the
midshipmen I met was the effort that they put into succeeding. Being a part of this culture, even for
two days, has shown me that I can work just a little harder, and that I can push myself just a little
further. Since returning home, I have done just that in numerous ways. My goal of serving our
country with meaningful purpose and responsibility is clear to me. I am confident that attending the
United States Naval Academy is the most effective way for me to achieve this objective, and for this

With rules such as "Plebes will greet all midshipmen" and "All room items should be stowed
according to Reef Points, with not gear adrift" the regulations hold midshipmen to a higher standard
which makes them develop as a person over time. An aspect of Dahl's prefect society is also that the
laws enable one to develop as a person. He expressed, "At birth, most human beings possess the
potentiality for developing these qualities. Whether and how much they actually develop them
depends on many circumstances, among which is the nature of the political system in which a
person lives" (Dahl 105). Without the ability to make to makes choices freely one cannot learn from
their mistakes since they are never able to make them. In a democracy one has to ability to make the
choice whether or not follow the rules, and then can learn from the consequences good or bad from
the decision they made. Dahl also claims that the people who live in a democracy are the most
mature and developed, since they can fight for their own interests. Fighting for one's best interest
develops one as a person since one has to think for themselves and grow as a person. When
analyzing the two, one finds that the regulations and what Dahl describes both nurture a society in

T-V-Pointer Experience
Firstly I would like to start off by mentioning I am an Engineer so my week was different than the

keeping my skills sharp for the merchant fleet I will soon be joining. Every time I take a trip on the
T/V Kings Pointer I am impressed at how my shipmates and I are able to safely navigate and operate
a vessel. This is a true testament to the education we receive at the Academy and during our time at

Shipyards have produced, was just icing on the cake compared to the Countless US Naval destroyers

Effects Of European Imperialism On Aboriginal Society
The indigenous cultures of Australia are the oldest living cultural history in the world and have
occupied the land for at least 50,000 years. Prior to European colonisation Aboriginal people lived a
semi–nomadic, hunting and gathering lifestyle. European settlement of Australia beginning in 1788
had devastating impacts the on existing indigenous population such as the introduction of many
fatal, foreign diseases and loss of land and resources. European establishment brought rapid changes
to Aboriginal society; in particular disease brought by the settlers played a fundamental role in the
breakdown of Indigenous society. Prior to the Macassan visits and the arrival of the Europeans,

When European settlers arrived they did not understand the Aboriginals land ownership system as it
was very different from their own. Upon European arrival the settlers declared the land as 'terra
nullius' (land belonging to no one) and took ownership of the land. The colonial government sold
and leased land to the settlers completely ignoring the deep spiritual connections the Aborigines had
with the land. By 1870s all fertile areas were taken from the Aboriginals and given to the white
settlers. The Europeans built fences, which prevented movement of native fauna and introduced hard
hoofed animals that destroyed the waterways and much of the plant life; this impacted the
Indigenous greatly as it reduced their access to resources. T.L Mitchell in a Journal of Expedition
outlines the impacts of the introduced animals "by thus treading the water into mud, or by drinking
it up, they literally destroy the whole country for the Aborigines, and thereby also banish from it the
kangaroos, emus, and other animals on which they live... that our 'clove foot' should appear
everywhere.". However Aboriginals fought for their land and adopted many of the European tactics
like letters and protests. British settlement led to a reduction of access to land and water sources for
the Indigenous people which reduced their

World War I, David Farragut
I, David Farragut, was born as James Glasgow Farragut on July 5, 1801 to my mother Elizabeth
Shine and my father, Jorge Antonio Farragut–Mesquida, in Campbell's Station, Tennessee. I am not
fully Hispanic, however, my father Jorge was an immigrant that worked as a merchant seaman and
was born on the Spanish island of Minorca. We are both descendants of the great conquistador Don

Example Of Conformity Essay
Earlier this semester, some friends and I were talking loudly and before we were about to step
outside we saw other Midshipmen were standing at attention. Though we did not directly hear
colors, we recognized from the people around us that we should also come to attention. Conformity
in this case was good because if we did not come to attention then it could have been a sign of
disrespect even if it was not intentional. Though there is no way to make this example "better," I
think conformity in situations outside of this example can cause people to lose their individuality.
Sometimes people are scared to be different, and because of that, they try to do what is normal. The
room next to mine in Bancroft Hall is a three man room, and one of the Midshipmen in that room
always stayed up late to shine his shoes. His roommates requested that he stop doing this, or
possibly do it earlier. The Midshipman shining his shoes agreed to the request made by his peers.
This is an example of compliance. It is not obedience because the order did not come from an

Mentorship Reflection

  • 1. Mentorship Reflection In the Navy and Marine Corps providing feedback and counseling to Sailors and Marines is a critical skill that every leader must possess. For this assignment, I was tasked with providing counseling and guidance to a struggling 3/C Midshipmen in my company on how they could improve in meeting the standards with regards to morally, mentally, and physically. For the counseling, I chose 3/C Burns who was struggling academically with a D at six weeks in Thermodynamics, a major course in his matrix. With this Midshipman struggling to meet the mission mentally, I was keen on attacking the issue before it developed into a major problem by providing advice, counseling, and a personal story of being in his place before. After overhearing in company area that MIDN 3/C Burns was struggling academically I decided to step in. I approached 3/C Burns and asked him if I could talk to him about his grades later that night, in which he agreed. On November 3, 2016 Midshipmen Burns and I met inside his room to discuss his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the positive side, I believe that by providing the struggling 3/C with a plan to adequately address his problem with outside resources that could help assist him in raising his grade was helpful. That night when I concluded counseling I was certain that 3/C Burns would begin to utilize the outside resources that I had mentioned. On the other hand, I quickly noticed that I had an area in which I could have improved. The area I believe could have been improved was the counseling coming off as, discipline. I say this for when I talked with Burns in the hallway about setting up the counseling he gave me a weird reaction as if he was in trouble. This continued when we met, as grades are often times a sore subject with students and telling him to get assistance could have been seen as a punishment for having a bad ... • 3. Service Academy Application Analysis The reason why the service academy is where I want to attend is because after observing both of my sisters, attend and graduate from University of Michigan: Ann Arbor, a public university. The comparison between service academy and public university is distinguishable, the camaraderie shown at the academy is the biggest factor as well as opportunities available and the feeling of the campus. First, camaraderie at the academy is my initial reason, how teamwork between the midshipman is primary instinct and the willingness to help without asking or being the first thought is astonishing. Second, the opportunities to be able to help in a greater extent is another reason, my purpose of pursuing higher education is to become an epidemiologist in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Sexual Assault And Rape During The World Today Two of the most serious public health and social issues faced in the world today are sexual assault and rape. Sexual assault and rape are words that are often used interchangeably but the terms have two distinct definitions. The United States Department of Justice defines sexual assault as any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Sexual activities that fall under the definition of sexual assault include forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape. Research in this area is extremely important because so many people are uneducated about sexual assault and rape. For the purpose of this paper, I conducted your research by utilizing news articles, empirical articles, the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program (UCR) and the United States' Department of Justice and several websites who advocate against sexual assault and rape. In addition, I included an article and its methodology of the peer reviewed article entitled Trauma Exposure, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Problem Drinking in Sexual Assault Survivors. In accordance with the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program (UCR) and the National Incident– Based Reporting System (NIBRS) rape is no longer defined as "The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will" but is now defined as the "Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex ... • 7. Aristotle And Virtue "Aristotle and the Ethics of Virtue and Character" explains the "theories" that make up a moral situation. First, we have expectations for the outcome of a moral situation to be utilitarian or sometimes produce another desirable result. We also have restraints that govern the actions we make to produce those outcomes. Last, certain character traits define who is prepared to perform the necessary actions and be content with the results. Aristotle's "The Moral Virtues" explains how the mean of an excess and a deficit is the virtue. It is nearly impossible to act perfectly within the mean, which is why Aristotle recommends that one keep away from the extreme that is more opposed to the mean, be wary of pleasant things, and notice the direction (toward excess or deficit) toward which one, personally, will tend. Finally, in "Habit and Virtue," Aristotle defines virtue as a result of habituation. Character is developed through the repetition of activities, and therefore the aim of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mckenna, believes that flexibility is the most important virtue for a 3/C midshipman. He explained this by noting the unique place of a third class in a company. First, a 3/C must use the followership learned as a plebe in order to learn from the upperclassmen who run the company, especially since the youngsters were shotgunned and are having to learn an entirely new company system. But, along with following the 2/C and 1/C, a 3/C is immediately expected to lead a plebe, which requires flexibility in itself. A 3/C must find the line between being a friend and a superior to the plebe, sometimes switching between the roles. Mr. Mckenna sees the increase in freedom of 3/C as a difficult increase in responsibility because you suddenly expected to follow and lead but without as many people constantly watching. If a 3/C is rigid in her ways, she will be unable to follow, learning a new company's ways, and unable to lead, changing her ways to help develop someone other than ... • 9. How Does Westerfeld Use Literary Elements In Leviathan The use of literary elements is widespread in Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. This is shown when Westerfeld uses dramatic irony to highlight a character's cluelessness. At a certain instance the character, Alek, is comparing himself to another character, Dylan. Westerfeld writes, "In a way Dylan was the sort of boy Alek would have wanted to be if he hadn't been the son of an archduke" (327). This statement is ironic due to the fact that the "boy" Alek is referring to is actually a girl masquerading as a boy. At this point in the book, the reader is fully aware that Dylan is actually a girl, but none of the other characters know, thus making it an instance of dramatic irony. The author likely chose to use this literary element to remind the reader that the characters have been left in the dark about Dylan's true gender. This use of dramatic irony aided in reminding the reader about one of the larger story elements present in Leviathan. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the story, Alek and his allies see some of their enemies ahead of them attempting to locate their position. To avoid being spotted or worse, they are forced to walk very slowly in their mechanical walking–vehicle. To further emphasize the low speed of of the machine, Westerfeld writes, "With the engines at quarter power, the massive feet moved slowly–––like walking through syrup" (169). This statement is a simile because it compares the low power of the engines to being submerged in syrup using the connecting word "like." Westerfeld chose to compare these two things because the mechanical walker was moving very slowly, just like how something would move through a thick substance like syrup. To conclude, this use of a simile helped to show a clearer image of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Thomas Cochrane 's Life And Life Thomas Cochrane was born on December 14, 1775 in Annsfield, Scotland. He was the eldest son of Archibald and Anna Gilchrist Cochrane, and had three brothers: Archibald, Basil and William. Thomas received little to no formal schooling, which taught him to be self–reliant and practical. Thomas shared his eccentricity and intellectual curiosity with his father, a scientist and inventor. In November of 1784, Anna Cochrane passed away. Soon after, Thomas was sent to Mr. Chauvet's military academy in Kensington, London. His father had secured this role for Thomas through aristocratic connections, however, it was not Thomas' dream. In 1792, Thomas finished military schooling, but decided to join the navy instead. In fall of 1793, his uncle learned he had been appointed to command the Thetis. The crew was transferred and Thomas was given the opportunity to prepare the ship for sea. Had inherited from his father an intense passion for understanding how things worked and how they could be improved. Over the next two years, Thomas learned all aspects of a ship, including how to do each specialist trade and how to handle a boat in all weather conditions. This practical working knowledge of a ship and seamanship would prove to benefit him greatly when he commanded his own vessel. On April 13, 1795, Cochrane joined the Africa, a 64–gun ship. He spent 5 weeks as acting lieutenant. He eventually reboarded the Thetis as acting second lieutenant and waited for an official promotion. These skills allowed Thomas to take the lieutenant 's exams, which he passed in 1796. Soon after, Cochrane was appointed as lieutenant on the flagship the Resolution. It was an extremely peaceful boat; the officers got along and the crew was enjoyed their work, but cochrane understood that promotion was not likely aboard the Resolution. In 1798, he reboarded his uncles frigate and sailed for EnglanD where he was appointed eighth lieutenant on Lord Keith's flagship HMS Barfleur, serving in the Mediterranean. • 13. Naval Academy Application Essay Sample Since I was young I have had the upmost admiration for our nation's elite fighting force. I was captivated by the idea of being a part of an organization comprised of proud Americans with shared values of selflessness, honor, and loyalty. I was raised by two devoted parents with strong principles who dedicated their lives to serving others in their respective medical careers. At a young age I joined the cub scouts followed by a transition into boy scouts where I was instilled with the values of honor, duty and teamwork. I actively served my community developing a passion for continued service. Fortunately, I was accepted to the Naval Academy and I set out with my twin brother to Annapolis. We are the first in our family to join the military and hope to make military service a family tradition. While attending the Naval Academy, I majored in quantitative economics and served in a variety of leadership positions. As a midshipman I learned invaluable lessons about both how to be an effective Naval Officer of compassion and character as well as how far I can push myself personally and professionally. ... In mathematics, I learned the languages of linear algebra, multi–dimensional calculus, probability and statistics. In these courses I used mathematical techniques to solve optimization problems that can directly relate to logistical and scheduling problems in the military. Personal Narrative: The Naval Academy Summer Seminar Countless students my age have their shorter, easier to attain goals planned out for the not–so– distant future, whether it be graduating college or to just making it through high school. I may be no different; however, several people may say that my ambitions are further reaching into my future. My ultimate goal is to become a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and, then, to serve my country as a member of the largest navy in the world. I took the first step to my dream this summer as I attended NASS, or the Naval Academy Summer Seminar. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All of us played intramural sports for around three hours. After playing a few games of touch football, I had my first opportunity to familiarize myself with people from all around the country and world. Each one had a unique story and background, and it somewhat surprised me since I had never had the opportunity to be surrounded by such a diverse crowd. Once we had finally finished up and headed back to our rooms, we had the chance to meet our roommates and then our squad. The seminar had us grouped into three increasingly smaller elements: company, platoon, and squad, with squad being the tightest knit consisting of around six people. I soon discovered that I was lucky for the reason that my roommate and I were squad mates. The entire week, any candidate I asked were not in the same squad with their roommate. Once we had time to become acquainted, we were escorted to dinner, where our squad leader began to learn about us, and we became closer with her. The following few days were challenging, but we fell into sort of a routine. We woke up early, around 5:00 A.M, then we would jog to the football field and have our morning PT. After that we would grab a shower and head to breakfast. Academic classes followed that and then lunch. These two days proved to be the dullest and provided the least excitement; however, there were challenging by forcing us to stay awake and participate for a long period of time. At breakfast that morning, the excitement at the table was obvious, especially once our squad leader got out her camouflage face paint out and started to put it all over herself and us, making us look as though we were true warriors. From there, we made our way through the early morning mist to the place where our company would be starting at: Hospital Point. Our squad leader had told us that the most difficult phase would probably be the one known as "Wet & Sandy," and also that we would be starting in that particular phase. Basically it consisted of a few PT warm–up workouts, and then on to the main event. We linked arms on a two–feet wide beach and walked out into the river. Once the water, which was surprisingly warmed us all up because of the cold air, reached our thighs, we were instructed to sit. We proceeded to do thirty sit ups in the water as a unit because our arms were still linked. We then walked back to the beach and rolled in the sand until we were covered, becoming what Navy SEALs refer to as "sugar cookies." • 19. Essay On WEPO The new Weapons Petty Officer (WEPO) requirement in the Ordnance manual is detrimental to the Patrol boat fleet without a Maritime Enforcement Specialist (ME) or Gunners Mate (GM) billet. The new requirement of a WEPO having to be an E–6 at an afloat unit with three or less officers is not beneficial to the 87' cutter fleet. Keep in mind that units without a ME or GM will traditionally have a Boatswains Mate (BM) as the WEPO. With this recent change in the ordnance manual, the Operation Petty Officer (OPS) on board 87's is now required to be designated as the WEPO. This creates three unforeseen issues to include, but not limited to Training, Man–power, and extra duties/responsibilities. First, let's glance at the training aspect of becoming a WEPO in today's Coast Guard. The weapons system program is tracked by a navy program called the "3M" program. This system has only been relevant to the coast guard since the last 5–6 years. The training takes approximately 8+ hours to complete just to become certified to run the maintenance program which in itself is not trouble–free to complete. Once the training is complete and you are certified to run the 3M program, you must now build your maintenance schedules which are extremely time consuming and tedious. This is just the administrative portion not including physically conducting the required maintenance. The training is inadequate at best, to become proficient with the 3M program since it is difficult to comprehend in nature and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If you look to your right you will notice something that very admirable to this school. Although, the stadium and the NROTC building is very nice, I would like to focus on the display. It was donated by the Naval Air Museum which is located in Pensacola, Florida. • 23. Naval ROTC Career Analysis As a midshipman in the Buccaneer Battalion, I have spent the last two years of my Naval ROTC career developing my technical skills to become a nuclear submarine officer. While seeking constant self–improvement is no simple feat, I know it is a worthy effort. Rather ironically, adversity actually proved to be an outstanding testament to my commitment to a naval career, and when I was found to have a medical condition I rose to the challenge. Since my initial diagnosis, I have undergone surgery and fully recovered, but more importantly, I have proven my unwavering commitment to commissioning as a nuclear officer. The experience was a lesson in mental fortitude and I fought to achieve a high physical and academic standard to rank competitively for the nuclear Navy. As a technical ... The specifics of this condition were not nearly as important as the hindering effect it had on my ability to perform in physical training. To account for this shortfall, I ran every day to meet the standards of the NROTC. Regardless of the efforts I put forth, I was not content with meeting the minimal requirements. Determined to overcome this physical obstacle with greater success, I met with experts and they presented an ultimatum, struggle through the program or undergo corrective surgery. Knowing the recovery would be challenging, especially having physical therapy during a critical year of Industrial Engineering, I recognized the greater purpose behind my commissioning source and went forward with the procedure. It was during the recovery process that I gained insight into the nature of self–improvement. At a very young age my parents taught me to value discipline, manners, and to show and treat people with respect. In addition to these 'staples' of my upbringing, excelling in academics and on the athletic fields was where I further grew as a leader and learned to work with others to further distinguish myself from my peers. I knew based on my priorities and values that I was different from others by not only the way I carried myself but how I spoke to my peers and elders and the respect that I commanded. The personal experiences I have had along the way have aided in shaping my character. For example, this year I had the privilege of being elected to the board of my school's National French Honor Society. Our induction ceremony for new members was taking place and much preparation had to be done in a short amount of time. As a new board member, I took charge and made sure every detail of the ceremony was perfect. From decorations, food, audio and video, I did it all. My teacher and head of the honor society was very impressed by my leadership and "take charge" approach that she appointed me the new President of the French Honor Society for the 2015–2016 school years. That event allowed me to see my true potential as someone who works well with others as a leader, and my ability to work under pressure to achieve results. I have always strived to be the best I can be and excel at whatever task I set out to do. By having the opportunity to attend The United States Naval Academy, it would allow me to continue to challenge myself academically as well as strengthen my leadership and discipline. I would also be honored to serve my country as an officer, giving back to this great country that has been so good to me and my family for generations. As I sifted through the details of your unimaginably rigorous summer, my mind swelled with a pervasive sentiment of admiration for you and your fellow Plebes. Strength, fortitude, courage, selflessness, and genius come in many forms, and what is perhaps the most awe–inspiring characteristic of the Plebe summer is that it encapsulates all of these intangibles and more in a highly concentrated, intense manner. Trying to consider and internalize just how courageous you are is a frivolous exercise; I will never comprehend the commitment you make, never comprehend the devotion you give, never comprehend the selflessness you exude, never comprehend the fortitude you possess. Because of my academic successes and social priorities, several individuals have celebrated me as a "motivated" and "nice" or "good" person, but when I compare myself to you, your motivation and goodness indubitably surpass my own, and for that fact I gain nothing but an unquantifiable respect and admiration for you; you are an extraordinary person, and I use the word "extraordinary" judiciously. ... Many of us have witnessed drivers so distracted by dialing and chatting that they resemble drunk drivers, weaving between lanes, for example, or nearly running down pedestrians in crosswalks. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The latter statistic is interesting, for it suggests that those who carry phones in their cars may tend to be more negligent or prone to distractions of all kinds than those who do not. Some groups have argued that state traffic laws make legislation regulating cell phone use unnecessary. Sadly, this is not true. Laws on traffic safety vary from state to state, and drivers distracted by cell phones can get off with light punishment even when they cause fatal accidents. Although the midshipman mentioned earlier was charged with vehicular manslaughter for the deaths of John and Carole Hall, the judge was unable to issue a verdict of guilty. Under Maryland law, he could only find the defendant guilty of negligent driving and impose a $500 fine (Layton C1). Such a light sentence is not unusual. The driver who killed Morgan Pena in Pennsylvania received two tickets and a $50 fine––and retained his driving privileges (Pena). In Georgia, a young woman distracted by her phone ran down and killed a two–year–old; her sentence was ninety days in boot camp and five hundred hours of community service (Ippolito J1). The families of the victims are understandably distressed by laws that lead to such light sentences. When certain kinds of driver behavior are shown to be especially dangerous, we wisely draft special laws making them illegal and imposing specific punishments. • 33. Summary: Impacts Of The Nicaraguan Canal Impacts of the Nicaraguan Canal The U.S. Navy currently possesses the world's largest fleet in the world. China, however, has been investing hundreds of billions of dollars each year into its military and power projecting defenses. It is estimated that the Chinese navy's fleet will outnumber the U.S. by 2020. Not only is China expanding in sheer numbers, but it is also expanding its assertion for dominance in the Western Hemisphere. Two years ago, Nicaragua granted a Chinese company the right to build an alternative to the Panama Canal. When finished, the canal will stretch along the entirety of Nicaragua, dividing the country in two, to allow large vessels to travel through it. Less than a month ago, official construction of the canal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wang Jing, a multi–billionaire from China, was offered a 100–year concession by the Nicaraguan government to build the Canal. The project is estimated to cost between $40–50 billion which Jing claims to raise through his unnamed "outside investors" (foreign policy). This alone is enough for skeptics, as well as the U.S., to suspect that the Chinese government is secretly funding the project. In fact, there is reason to believe that this canal will not just be used for trade, but for a Chinese strategic advantage in Central America. China has been pouring money into their own navy over the past few years; its fleet is projected to boast "about 82 submarines...within five to eight years" (defensetech). At present day, China still maintains more than double of the U.S.'s supply of submarines. The canal's physical dimensions show that it will be "28 meters [deep]...enough for Chinese submarines to quickly and covertly cross between...oceans" (foreign policy). The Panama Canal, by contrast, restricts vessels traveling through it by about 12 meters. There is absolutely no reason for the Nicaraguan canal to be 28 meters deep when it comes to trading and exporting purposes; this makes it seem even more believable for the Chinese to use it for strategic purposes. Compounding this information with the recent and drastic growth of the Chinese fleet, it is no wonder why the U.S. is concerned. Another reason for suspecting the Chinese government's involvement is the lack of knowledge about the project leader, Wang Jing. Reportedly, he earned his billions of dollars in the telecommunications industry in a company, also run by the government. This political tie to the Chinese government is yet another supporting factor to the alleged intentions of the country's military. It is important for the U.S. to keep an eye on ... Robert Dahl wrote the essay entitled "Why Democracy?" to explain the effects of government own its citizens. The Midshipman Regulations are no exception to influencing the society of the regiment. They create a society that closely mirrors the society Dahl envisions in his essay. Dahl envisions a society "that insures its citizens a broad range of personal freedom...," whereas the Midshipmen Regulations certainly do not grant numerous freedoms like Dahl would have envisioned (101). In a pure democracy everyone has a say, so no one will willingly give up their personal freedoms and rights. The regulations only work because the midshipmen agree to follow rules like Plebes shall not talk in the hallways, Delano, or outdoors. Dahl's society with abundant freedom is advantageous in the long run, whereas the society created from the Midshipman Regulations is superior in the short term. If one is subject to strict, relentless rule, they are bound to rebel such as what lead to the American Revolution, hence Dahl's society is better for the long term. Now looking at the regulations, it builds character and toughness, but after a certain period it becomes impractical and counterproductive like writing the "Standards of Conducts" five times. For that reason, the Midshipmen regulations become less strict the longer they are here so that the midshipmen do not go insane. Both of the two societies have different views on freedom, but still produce people of character. The two societies formed from Dahl's perfect democracy and the Midshipmen Regulations have several of the same characteristics, such as practicing moral responsibility and developing as a person. Exactly what billet I would hold is hard to say, but I do not believe the position is all that important. What is important, I feel, is how you treat those around you and those under you. However, for the sake of writing, I will assume I will be a squad leader. Throughout this course, we have discussed multiple parts of leadership that are central to being an effective leader. While each part we have studied is different, they all have the same idea: being an effective leader for your people. I will best be prepared to succeed by putting to practice these different parts and focusing on their development for the future. Specifically, those leadership traits I would aim to develop are the ability to reflect better and servant leadership. An important part of leadership, as we deemed, is one's ability to reflect: to learn from previous or current situations, and to put to practice what you have learned. Reflection does not have to be a long, drawn–out process that requires hours of your time or journaling. Though these things can be a part of reflection, reflecting only has to take a moment. Whether and how much they actually develop them depends on many circumstances, among which is the nature of the political system in which a person lives" (Dahl 105). Trips like the ones that take place on the T/V Kings Pointer require midshipman that are diligent, committed, and personable in a close quarters environment but at the same time our ability to stay composed under pressure and perform exceptionally well is what sets a true Kings Pointer ... While seeking constant self– improvement is no simple feat, "strategic deterrence" through nuclear capability is a greater purpose that is worth the extra efforts. My greatest satisfaction, as a technical student, is understanding the practical uses of fundamental mathematics and science models. I am seeking a career which holds the challenge of grasping many technical concepts and applying them a larger solution. That problem solving style is evident in the US Navy's projection of nuclear power to deter global conflict. As such, I can think of no greater honor than to graduate ... • 57. Effects Of European Imperialism On Aboriginal Society The indigenous cultures of Australia are the oldest living cultural history in the world and have occupied the land for at least 50,000 years. Prior to European colonisation Aboriginal people lived a semi–nomadic, hunting and gathering lifestyle. European settlement of Australia beginning in 1788 had devastating impacts the on existing indigenous population such as the introduction of many fatal, foreign diseases and loss of land and resources. European establishment brought rapid changes to Aboriginal society; in particular disease brought by the settlers played a fundamental role in the breakdown of Indigenous society. Prior to the Macassan visits and the arrival of the Europeans, Aborigines were generally free from disease however introduced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When European settlers arrived they did not understand the Aboriginals land ownership system as it was very different from their own. Upon European arrival the settlers declared the land as 'terra nullius' (land belonging to no one) and took ownership of the land. The colonial government sold and leased land to the settlers completely ignoring the deep spiritual connections the Aborigines had with the land. By 1870s all fertile areas were taken from the Aboriginals and given to the white settlers. The Europeans built fences, which prevented movement of native fauna and introduced hard hoofed animals that destroyed the waterways and much of the plant life; this impacted the Indigenous greatly as it reduced their access to resources. T.L Mitchell in a Journal of Expedition outlines the impacts of the introduced animals "by thus treading the water into mud, or by drinking it up, they literally destroy the whole country for the Aborigines, and thereby also banish from it the kangaroos, emus, and other animals on which they live... that our 'clove foot' should appear everywhere.". However Aboriginals fought for their land and adopted many of the European tactics like letters and protests. British settlement led to a reduction of access to land and water sources for the Indigenous people which reduced their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Nancy Bell I read the poem "The Yarn of Nancy Bell" by W.S. Gilbert. The poem tells a gruesome yet humorous story about a naval man who ends up losing his sanity from a cannibalistic experience after a ship accident. The speaker of the poem is a character who is retelling a story that they have heard from someone else. As for the story, the characters are the ten surviving crew members of the Nancy Bell ship which include the man, the cook, the captain, a shipmate, a boatswain, a midshipman, and the captain's gig crew. The setting took place on the shore from Deal to Ramsgate in the beginning with the narrator and then in the Indian Sea for the rest of the story where the characters were stranded. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man... A woman is human," Vera Narzarian said. Leviathan, by Scott Westerfeld, is about Alek–a young archduke of Austria–whose parents were murdered, his mentors then kidnapped him to save him and headed to the Switzerland border. While at the same time, Deryn–a midshipman aboard the Leviathan who is pretending to be a boy–has been shot down by Clanker aeroplanes and rested on the floor of a snow–covered valley–the same valley that Alek was in at the Switzerland border. Alek and Deryn then meet and become allies for what else will come. The author revealed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this situation, Deryn, Newkirk, another middy, and Mr. Rigby, their officer, were on top of the Leviathan. After a Clanker aeroplane almost crashed into the Leviathan, Mr. Rigby slipped and started sliding of the edge of the ship after being hit by parts of the plane, dragging the rope that Newkirk was attached to. Newkirk then proceeded to take out his rigging knife to cut his rope from Deryn's to save her. "But it was too late–the rope connecting him to Rigby was straightening fast. Newkirk looked up at her hopelessly his had moving to the rigging knife at his belt."(212) Deryn then threw herself off the other side of the ship as quick thinking to try to help. The quick thinking worked, because it stopped the falling long enough for other crewmembers to pull up on the rope saving three people. Unfortunately, the Leviathan was falling from the sky and there was nothing to do to help it. "On the spine a squad of riggers held her line, in a tug of war with something on the other side of the ship."(213) Theme was developed by showing that girls are a lot of times smarter than boys by saying that Deryn was the one that jumped off the edge of the ship. • 63. Service Academy Application Research Paper My want to attend a service academy came as a surprise to no one. Both of my parents served in the military and in a traditional kid fashion I wanted to be just like them. But the last thing my parents wanted was for me to enlist. They always told me I was too smart to not get a college education and to enter the military as an officer. I chose the Navy as my first choice after listening to my stepfather's stories about his time on a fast attack submarine. Now I was set on this path to hopefully one day become a Midshipman and Naval Officer at probably around the age of eight or nine. As I grew up and matured in my academic interests I found that my best subjects as well as those I shared the most interest in were those containing math and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Naval Academy Application Essay Sample My goal in attending the United States Naval Academy and becoming an officer in the Navy is to provide myself ample opportunities to reach my established life goals. I plan to pursue a career in aerospace engineering, and developing that career through the Naval Academy will help me to achieve the dreams I have had since childhood. The character and integrity I have developed through life experiences will aid me in reaching these goals and while attending the Naval Academy. I decided early on in High School that my goal was to attend college for a degree in aerospace engineering, moving on to work as an engineer. When I was very young, I read all types of books on planes. Naval aircraft, along with aircraft carriers, always fascinated me. By the time high school came around, I decided I wanted ... The trip consisted of a ten day trek through mountainous terrain near Cimarron, New Mexico. Along the way, I faced many challenges that helped boost my self–confidence and my respect for myself and others. Some of these challenges included climbing a twelve thousand foot mountain, having two crew members leave due to injuries, and facing my fear of rock climbing. Climbing Baldy Mountain was an exhilarating yet challenging experience by itself, increasing both my self–confidence and pride. After losing two crew members to injuries later in the week, every other crew member had to carry more crew gear. By the end of the week, I was carrying seventy pounds in my backpack, equivalent to about sixty percent of my body weight. This challenged my physical and emotional integrity, forcing me to stay calm and persevere even when my exhausted mind and body wanted to give up. Without any family affiliation or bases near my rural community, I had almost no exposure to the military but was dedicated to serving my country. Recently in my last year of the NROTC program, I have been privileged with an acceptance into the Navy Medical Corps. I fulfill a duty responsibility to myself, my community, my country, and my world. Ever since I was a kid, I always had big dreams and goals for my life. Now that I have more experience and I have started my college career, I continue to set high goals and standards for myself because my primary job is being a leader of one. This is why I have a responsibility to my curiosity, passions and my education. I am currently enrolled in the College of Engineering as well as the Honor College. • 71. A Narrative Essay About Joining The Navy I have always had a fascination with the ocean. I recall standing on the Jersey Shore, watching the waves crash upon the coast with a transfixed gaze, in awe of the indomitable blue expanse that humans could only dream to subjugate. This view remained steadfast in my mind until May 2003, where I first observed that which could indeed dominate the waves; the ships of the United States Navy. It was during this time that I attended Fleet Week for the first time in New York, and I was completely enthralled. The ships before me were marvels, destroying my belief regarding the unyielding ocean; these ships conquered the sea regularly. They radiated power, respect, and esteem. The sailors that maintained and ran the ship beamed professionalism, honor, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I soon found I could become a leader of sailors, and although a more difficult path than enlistment, this newfound route appealed to me. A presentation from an alumni of my high school and the Naval Academy introduced me to the institution, and every word he said resonated within me, bringing me back to my viewing of the ships and the sailors for the first time. I left that presentation with a goal that I have not stopped working towards; to become a midshipman and subsequently an officer in the United States Navy. As one of the most respected schools in the world, the Naval Academy would most certainly help me achieve my goals. For the short term, I desire to work with the propulsion systems of nuclear submarines, and no other university on the planet could give me the training and know–how on this matter like the Naval Academy. For the long term, I desire to become a JAG Officer. The reputation and academic esteem of the Naval Academy would allow me to attend the best law school possible, which in turn would allow me to serve my branch and my nation at a higher level than I otherwise would be able ... • 73. World War I, David Farragut I, David Farragut, was born as James Glasgow Farragut on July 5, 1801 to my mother Elizabeth Shine and my father, Jorge Antonio Farragut–Mesquida, in Campbell's Station, Tennessee. I am not fully Hispanic, however, my father Jorge was an immigrant that worked as a merchant seaman and was born on the Spanish island of Minorca. We are both descendants of the great conquistador Don Pedro Farragut who served the King of Aragon during the 13th century. I lived in Tennessee until 1807, because my dad was stationed at New Orleans. At the age of 17, I left my family to go to the Porter family. My mother died of a yellow fever epidemic in 1808, however, she and my father were taking care of a naval officer named David Porter. His son, David Porter Jr., adopted me as a step– son, whom I would later serve for as a midshipman. I first went into battle in the war of 1812, where I was aboard the vessel called the Essex which patrolled the South American region to hunt down British vessels. During the war, many British vessels had me surrounded me and killed 58 people of my step–dad's crew. Yet, he saw my great ability to withstand pressurizing situations. During that war, I also changed my name to David in honor of my step–dad. In 1823, I married my first wife from Norfolk, Virginia, called Susan Merchant. Two years after my ... • 75. Example Of Conformity Essay Earlier this semester, some friends and I were talking loudly and before we were about to step outside we saw other Midshipmen were standing at attention. Though we did not directly hear colors, we recognized from the people around us that we should also come to attention. Conformity in this case was good because if we did not come to attention then it could have been a sign of disrespect even if it was not intentional. Though there is no way to make this example "better," I think conformity in situations outside of this example can cause people to lose their individuality. Sometimes people are scared to be different, and because of that, they try to do what is normal. The room next to mine in Bancroft Hall is a three man room, and one of the Midshipmen in that room always stayed up late to shine his shoes. His roommates requested that he stop doing this, or possibly do it earlier. The Midshipman shining his shoes agreed to the request made by his peers. This is an example of compliance. It is not obedience because the order did not come from an authoritative figure. It was important for the roommates to agree on a time to cut off the lights because they ...
