16th Century
Everyone strives to be great and leave a lasting legacy. This includes the nations of the present, present, and future. But, how do nations become great?
Powerful militaries, strong economies, and stable internal affairs are what make nations great, but how are these achieved? The answer to this question
can be found by looking at the past. One time period to observe is the 15th and 16th centuries. In this time many civilizations rose to new heights across
the globe. Obviously the greatest of the time would be the place to look. So, what is the greatest civilization of these centuries? Like the civilizations of
modern times the nations of that time were faced with unseen obstacles, mostly surrounding an unprecedented connectedness. The Ottomans... Show

Their government was entirely based on connections. Many administrative duties were delegated to regional leaders by the sultan and under these
leaders were more delegated duties. This meant that their whole government was a complicated web of connections. The government was fair and
stable because the people who ran it were very close to the people they were making rules for. Given their remarkable size and diversity it is
impressive that they never had any large scale revolts. Their empire included Muslims, Jews, and Christians. Despite the conflicts between these groups
the Ottomans were able to quell their differences by assigning religious leaders to each province, further increasing the web of connection within the
empire. Critics of the Ottoman will say that their government was too spread, without a clear leader. On the other hand, the sultan was quite powerful,
as evidenced by Suleiman the Magnificent. He was a legendary leader and as sultan vastly improved the Ottoman empire. The Ottomans ruled with a
firm, but steady hand. This hand was held together by a complex network of connections. The Ottomans were undoubtedly great, with their mighty
military, robust economy, and firm governing. They achieved their greatness through embracing the power of connections. Being an undisputed power
during the 15th and 16th century, many nations of the present and future will attempt to reach such power. Their legacy

The Ottoman Empire : European Influence Of The Ottoman Empire
The Ottoman empire was one of the most successful and powerful empires of their time. The empire was built to become the largest and most
influential of the multitude of Muslim empires. The empire lasted many years because of its strong janissary army and rulers. It had sultans that
conquered lands throughout Europe, Africa and Asia around the Anatolia region. Their military expanded over and into much of Europe, along with
Islam. Though power shifted towards Europe, this shift was not inevitable.
European dominance of the Anatolia region was avoidable because of the Ottoman Empire. Prior to the empire, there was dynastic civil warfare in this
region. Mehemed II the conqueror, who is considered the real creator of the empire, took a newly built and advanced navy across Pera to the
Bosporus, to attack both of the walls of Constantinople in order to conquer the city. He later renamed it Istanbul. Selim the Grim created the Ottoman
navy, which effectively captured Mesopotamia, Egypt and Syria and was then able to acquire the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Sultan Suleiman
drove the Ottoman Empire to conquering most of its lands. Suleiman conquered great cities, and introduced military machines to the great Ottoman
Empire. Most of the lasting history of this empire relies on the achievements made by this one ruler. For example, "Suleiman doubled the size of the
empire and oversaw its expansion throughout the Balkans and Hungary and as far west as Vienna. He also oversaw

Eighteenth Century Ottoman Empire The Ottoman Empire was a state founded by Turkish tribes under Osman Bey in 1299. Under the leadership of
Mehmed II, this fledgling nation became an empire with the conquest of Constantinople in 1452 by Mehmed II. The Ottoman Empire continued in its
imperial form until it became the Republic of Turkey in 1923. As an empire, it was the most powerful state in the world with 32 provinces during the
seventeenth century. In the last half of the seventeenth century, the Ottoman Empire functioned under the rule of the Koprulu family, a notable family
of imperial bureaucrats from Albania who overhauled the bureaucracy and instituted military reforms. After the fall of... Show more content on

The Janissary corps distinct social class and special privileges soon brought more harm than good to the Sultans of the eighteenth Century. The group
of men grew corrupt and lived above the law. Not even the poor were given mercy. A prime example of this can be found in Lady Montague's Turkish
Embassy Letters, where the janissaries slaughter and feast on the poor's livestock then require the households to pay teeth money. The lawlessness of
these men grew so unbearable that Lady Montague also observes and writes about, how "'tis the Emperor's interest to flatter [the janissaries]" (Montagu,
105). The groups' power became unchecked and tension between the Sultans and janissaries magnified.
Ahmed III was the first ruler of the eighteenth century. His close ties to the European rulers lead to prosperous relations with the French and
Swedish. Ahmed, during his reign, afforded refuge to Charles XII of Sweden after the Swedish defeat under the hands of Peter I of Russia in the
Battle of Poltava of 1709. In response to the Swedish defeat, Ahmed declared war against Russia and won the Ottoman Empire's most notorious
victory over Russia. Never before had the Ottoman forces come so near to breaking the Russian power. The invasion, however, was halted in response
to the incursion of Safavids. Aside from the war, Ahmed left the finances of the Empire in a flourishing state

Suleiman The Magnificent Research Paper
Despite being an absolute ruler of the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman the Magnificent protected religious freedoms because of the history of Muslims,
Christians, and Jewish people living peacefully in millets. Suleiman the Magnificent was born on November 6, 1494. His father was Selim the First and
his mother was Hafsa Sultan. At age seven, he went to school and studied in literature, science, literature, marital tactics and theology. According to the
Venetian envoy Bartolomeo Contarini, " Suleiman was friendly, good–humored, enjoyed reading, knowledgeable and made good judgments."
Suleiman's early leadership started in his late teens. During his father's rule, he became governor of Kaffa in Crimea at the age of seventeen. Then,

The virgins all lived in the palace and the living spaces they lived in soon became the harem. The harem is where only the most beautiful women
lived. Their duty was to bear the sultan sons. His wife was named Roxellana. She was a daughter of an impoverished Christian priest from Ukraine.
She was a part of the harem gaining her way to the top by being the favorite of the sultan. Suleiman fell in love with her and she gave him six sons and
two daughters. Suleiman the Magnificent is an absolute ruler which means that he took all power in his empire. During his rule, Suleiman expanded his
empire into Europe. He extended the empire in Greece, Bulgaria, Egypt, Hungry, Macedonia, Romania, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, some of

Isaac Asimov I Robot Quotes
The book I, Robot is a fictional story written by Isaac Asimov. It was first published on December 2nd, 1950, but it is still a famous classic read
today. In the following two paragraphs, I want to relate two quotes from the novel to a personal connection as well as a text–to–text connection
respectfully. Let's start with the text–to–text connection. In the beginning of the novel where my first quotation is found, we are introduced to Gloria,
an innocent child, and Robbie the robot, who was Gloria's best buddy and caregiver. During the beginning of the novel, Gloria was furious that her
mother correlated Robbie to a machine, as Gloria thought the contrary to her mother. She believed that "he was a person just like you and me and he
was [her] friend" (Asimov 28), and while robots are not human and are not made of flesh and blood, Gloria believed that the robots are capable of
feeling and interacting with humans just as if humans were interacting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In "Black + White = Black" by Lawrence Hill, Hill explains the segregation between Blacks and Whites and how Whites didn't treat Blacks as
people because of their colour. This is similar to how Gloria's mother does not treat robots as humans, but rather as a "nasty old machine" (Asimov
28), and this shows how Gloria's mother and Whites show no respect to the other "species" due to their own personal judgments and beliefs, which are
falsely created by themselves. Both represent isolation of a certain "species" due to the mistrust, tension, and stereotypes they have between one
another, and both show that even though there is no valid reason as to why they should not trust one another, there is still conflict between the Blacks
and Whites nowadays in all parts of the world just like there is conflict between Gloria's mother and the

Analysis Of Issac Asimov's I Robot
Robots are a more important part of society now then they have ever been. Issac Asimov lived in a time where robots were merely an idea, but that
didn't stop him from using this idea of a robot to represent different aspects of humanity throughout the chapters of his book I, Robot. Asimov's book
reflects on human nature and what it means to be human. Reflecting can help people to better understand themselves and the people that surround
them. One part of human nature that Asimov brings up is the idea that even lies with good intentions can cause harm. In I, Robot, one of the robots has
the ability to read minds, but the first "Law of Robotics" does not allow robots to harm human in any way, including hurt feelings. "Do you suppose that
if I asked a question, it wouldn't give exactly that answer that one wants to hear? Wouldn't any other answer hurt us, and wouldn't Herbie know that?"
(Asimov 108). This robot was doing everything it could not to hurt any of the humans and it did this by lying to them. This is something that many
people can relate to, whether it is lying to someone by telling them they threw a good party or that it couldn't be attended because of a fake
appointment, telling the truth wouldn't benefit anyone. By recognizing that lying is a part of human nature, it can be understood why someone might
choose to lie. The relationships made throughout life would only benefit from empathizing with another's thought process. Asimov adds to the idea of

Lack Of Emotions Revealed In The Film I, Robot
The movie I, Robot follows a cop in the year 2035 that is investigating a crime at U.S. Robots and Mechanical Men or USR Dr. Alfred Lanning was
murdered but it wasn't a typical murder. The cop is played by Will Smith and his character is named Del Spooner. There seems to be something odd
even in the beginning of the film almost a lack of trust. Detective Del Spooner is later to be revealed as being paranoid by everyone around him. The
problem is that he feels alone in his prejudice towards technology, particular robots. There are tons of paranoia in our current society that runs along
the same lines. The films effect on me showed me how too much reliance on technology can be bad. The solution on the overreliance of technology

The solution on the overreliance of technology dwells within our humanity. Will Smith's character states to Sonny, "You are just a machine. An
imitation of life. Can a robot write a symphony? Can a robot turn a canvas into a beautiful masterpiece?", and Sonny acknowledges this (Mark &
Davis, 2004). Our current culture seems to be making robots more human and humans more robotic. Asimo made by Honda displays some amazing
feats such as running, walking up stairs and playing the violin (Honda, 2016). There seems to be a battle between our humanity and intellect. For
example, the internet or a robot could have them programed into them has the text of Shakespeare. Watson was created by IBM and can find
information will super algorithms
(IBM, 2016). This is amazing technology but humanity is simplified by being belittled into a role of memorization. The arts are what make us who
we are and our technology is an art form. They are our dreams come to

Mrs. Young- Personal Narrative Essay
Mrs. Young– Personal Narrative
In my life, I have experienced many things. Some things in my life have been happy, some things sad, and some things that I dare not mention.
When I was in high school, I did not want to go to college. All I wanted to do was to drink and drug myself to death. In one year, my life changed
more than all my other years combined because of one person's actions. I still do not know if she realizes how much she helped me. Out of the many
lessons that she taught me while she was my teacher, one overshadows the others. I learned how to care about others and not always think about
myself first. This has been the most important life lesson that I have learned so far. This person was my A. P.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Time was not an issue to this woman; we would spend three days on one problem so that everyone would understand it. She really took her time.
She did not want us to learn the stuff then forget it the next day. Most teachers are just worried about people passing their class. Mrs. Young
wanted the best for us. Not only was she a good person, but she had a way of getting information down to our level where we could understand it.
If it were not for her, I might be in the gutter somewhere. Tabitha Young was not just a teacher; she was also one of my friends. Now everyone
knows that teachers in North Carolina do not make that high of a salary. This did not matter to her; she would give anyone her last dollar if they
needed it for any reason. None of us truly understood how much this teacher cared about her students until one day. The day started out as any normal
day. All of the students were just sitting there chatting away with each other. Then as our teacher walked in the door, we all noticed that something
was wrong. She did not have her usual angelic look about her. This look was of sadness. One individual asked her what was wrong. She then
proceeded to tell us what was wrong. A student she had been working with had dropped out ofschool. She then started crying like no one else I have
ever seen cry before. She cried from the heart. We all knew that she was hurting. One of my fellow classmates got up and gave her a hug. All of

The Triumph of Christianity in the Roman Empire Essays
Christians went from being persecuted to dominating Rome rather quickly. In a world where separation between church and state does not exist, a
Christian becoming the sole emperor of Rome symbolized a huge turning point in history. The power switched and the Pagans in turn became
persecuted. Christians rose up and took control of all aspects of Roman society. The Pagan past was destroyed, banned, or forgotten about. Those
Christians that did not agree with how things were being run either left the empire and became monks or formed their own sect. All of Rome changed.
The part that interested me the most in these readings were those that strayed away from the standard Christianity that the emperor instated and

Like the monks they too believed in "penance, suffering, and martyrdom" (164). Led by Donatus, this movement dominated North Africa. The church
was not purely religious; however, its underlay was a revolutionary social movement. It was popular among peasants due to promises of reversing roles
of slaves and masters. What confuses me is that the base of their religion seems very much involved with the government. That alone would not be
surprising, since many religions share that quality; but, Donatus "insisted on complete separation of this Spirit–directed Church from the state" (164).
Separation of church and state was a big issue in the beginning of Christianity, mostly because it didn't exist. God supposedly chose the emperor
Constantine and in turn Constantine chose Christianity as the empire's official religion. The union of church and state may not have been as great a
problem if freedom of speech had also existed. It seems weird to imagine a right that I have taken for granted all of my life not to be present. Pagans
experience a loss of political rights and status. Anti–pagan and anti–Semitic preaching rallied everyone against the "outsiders." Those, such as the
popes, that enjoyed high ranks in Christianity now enjoyed high ranks in the government. Those, such as the emperor, that enjoyed high ranks in the
government now enjoyed high ranks in Christianity. The line

Ali And The Decline Of The Ottoman Empire
Following the death of Suleyman I in 1566, the Ottoman empire began a period of decline led by a succession of poor sultans. The palace government
broke up into numerous, corrupt factions, and problems with theft led to financial losses. While coinage was losing value and causing inflation, the
once–advanced empire fell behind technologically. Selim III came to power in 1789 with hopes of reviving the Ottoman army, but fell short when the
older janissary troops resisted and overthrew him. At the same time, nationalist feelings, inspired by the now–free Greece and self–ruled Serbia, were
stirring among the Ottoman people. As Europeans were expanding their territory through 20th and 21st century imperialism, these weaknesses of the

Russia hoped to gain access to the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, and twice Persia was forced to give up territories to Russia. Britain hoped to
gain control of Afghanistan in order to use it as a buffer between India and Russia. In 1857, despite resistance, Persia was forced to give up all claims
to Afghanistan. Persia as a nation lacked the funds to develop its abundant resources. In order to raise capital and increase their economic standing, the
Persian rulers began granting concessions, which allowed businesses to purchase the right to operate in a certain place or to develop a certain product,
to Western businesses. The willingness of the leaders to sell concessions and the refusal of the people to allow Western influence in their countries
created tensions. In one such instance, Jamal al–Din al–Afghani staged a tobacco boycott to protest Nasir al–Din's selling of a concession to a British
company to export Persian tobacco. The boycott was effective, and leaders were forced to cancel the concession. However, growing unrest as a result
created proved uncontrollable. In 1907, Russian and Britain had taken over the country and divided it into their own spheres of influence. The
economic control exercised over Persia thereafter is similar to the economic imperialism that many European imperialists utilized in Muslim

Origins of the Apple Computer Company Essay
Did you know that the Apple computer started in someone's garage? Many people do not know how it all started. Today, Apple Computer
Incorporated, formerly known as Apple Computer Company, dominates the technological industry with Mac, iPod, and iPhone sales. Apple had its best

the inventions of the Apple I and Apple II computers, which revolutionized the computer industry of the 1970s and 1980s.

towards computers would lead to the development of the first Apple computer. In 1971, Steve and his friend Bill Hernandez designed a pretty
good computer and his mother was impressed. She contacted a local newspaper company to do a report on it. They were very excited to explain
the operation and specs to the reporter, but that is not how it happened. When the reporter came to see the computer, they started the computer up
and the blinking lights came on. After that, someone stepped on the power cord, which caused the computer to start smoking, and then stopped
working. The reporter quickly left and only wrote a small article on their computer (Kendall 18). Steve decided it was time to choose a school based

Three Laws Of Robot Essay
The Effectiveness of Isaac Asimov`s Three Laws of Robotics
In 1950 a collection of short stories by Isaac Asimov gathered under a name I, Robot was first published commencing a whole new era in the field of
fiction. "Asimov first explicitly introduced the Three Laws of Robotics in the short story "Runaround," published in the March 1942 issue of
Astounding Science Fiction. In his 1985 novel Robots and Empire, Asimov formulated an additional Zeroth Law, to stand above the original three: "No
harm to humanity, or, allowing any harm to humanity by inaction." Other science fiction writers have explored similar ideas, sometimes anticipating
Asimov's laws and sometimes expanding on them." (Wallach 219) It was the first book to use the word "robot" ... Show more content on

Indeed, a robot should have some system of self–preservation reflexes as long as they do not interfere with its prime responsibilities. But, as
mentioned before, robots can under certain circumstances interpret the Laws differently and what is more important can be seen as a better version
of a human being. Asimov (3) wrote through the words of Susan Calvin: "Then you don't remember a world without robots. There was a time when
humanity faced the universe alone and without a friend. Now he has creatures to help him; stronger creatures than himself, more faithful, more
useful, and absolutely devoted to him. Mankind is no longer alone. Have you ever thought of it that way? ... They're a cleaner, better breed than we
are." In this sense robots deserve to be considered as equals to humans and even more than that, as superior beings. Robots that serve are just a first
step on the way to developing artificial intelligence opening new possibilities to no end. However, Asimov`s Three Laws do not go beyond the

Death Comes Swift Essay
Death comes swift. I lied awake in bed, unsure of what would happen to me now that Nan was dead. She was all I had for the last 16 years, and
while she wasn't accepting of who, what, I am... I know she still had some love for me. My thoughts swirled in my head much as they had for the
past week: "where will I go?", "What if they find out about me?", "What if I am discovered?" I knew from my grandmother that something terrible
would happen if anyone discovered my... abilities. By the age of nine I had been aloof and withdrawn in school, fearful that I might reveal myself to
someone. She forced me to church with her, begging the lord to extract my "devil's gifts" as she called them. I had one saving grace with my abilities,
she never... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I rolled the cheap rental fabric of the sleeve between my fingers before walking to my dresser and pulling out my underwear. I grabbed a pair of plain
boxers from the front and looked down at the boring pattern. "Might as well be a little different" I muttered, as i pulled the old drawer all the way
out, feeling around for the pair of fitted boxer briefs I had secretly gotten for myself. The pale blue went well with my pale skin, the spunky girl at
the store said so herself. It was one of the few acts of rebellion I had done up to that point. I still remembered how nervous I was going into the
alternative store in the local mall, I shook as I looked at all the crude jokes and sexual things inside. She came up out of nowhere and asked if I needed
any help. I stammered out "No, I–I'm alright thanks." She must have known I was nervous because she just smirked and said "Here let's find you a
souvenir." I only nodded and followed her around the store as she asked me about what I liked, what I was into, etc. I couldn't help but stair at her
amazingly colored hair, it shimmered in the dim light like a peacocks feathers; radiating out from a vibrant green, to blue, and purple. As we passed
by the "sexy" underwear section of the story, my eyes landed on the pair of underwear. Right away she noticed and said "Great choice! I bet he'll love
them" with a wink. I clammed up as soon as she said 'he', and of

Should College Athletes Be Paid?
Should College Athletes be Paid? Most American people like sports. College Sports have been growing up every year and universities and athletes
are more competitive every year. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) was founded in 1906 to protect young people from the
dangerous and exploitive athletics practices of the time and continues to implement that principle with increased emphasis on both athletics and
academic excellence (NCAA 2012). The NCAA make and apply the rules in college sports. One of the most pressing issues in Today's sport world is
if College athletes should be paid. Sports such as baseball, football and basketball generate giant amounts of revenue every year and has become the
NCAA in a multi–billion... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The NCAA definitely should share a little more with the athletes. The first and easiest argument that people use to fight against payment for
college athletes is saying that college athletes get pay because they get a free education. Analyzing this statement we can say that free tuitions
education is not everything that college athlete's needs. A full scholarship in a DIV 1 university cost to the school between $25,000 and $40,000
per year which means $100,000 over 4 years, it sounds like a lot of money, but is it enough? A Full scholarship in a DIV 1 university will cover
just the basic needs that athletes require. Is it fair to cover just the basic needs of an athlete who generate to the school a big revenue? For
example, according to Economist John Leonard in the book Microeconomics for Today by Irving B. Tucker a star college football player generates
around $100.000 per year; Joe Wyoming All American quarterback of the Nebraska State University let his University to play in the Sugar Bowl;
Nebraska State University received 5 million for the appearance and his scholarship was not even 1% of the money that a football season generate
for the school (John Leonard). Also, if the NCAA do not want to pay their players, they should let them get a job like any other student. But, they
don't. The NCAA restrict their athletes from having jobs because they do not want to athlete's performance being affected in any way. It also means, if
a fan wants to buy an

Why Is It So Important To The Ottoman's Defeat?
Throughout the history of many successful countries, there were times of war and despair. Wars not only destroy humans and buildings, but cultures
and ideas as well. For one country, its harmonious state of peace was terminated. When the Ottoman Empire attacked the Hungarians in the sixteenth
century, they triggered numerous conflicts lasting many years that would leave devastating battle scars on Hungary's face. It all started when the Sultan
of the Ottoman's waged a war that would change the route of Hungary's history forever: The Battle of MohГЎcs. Long before this battle for conquest
could have begun, the Ottomans were greatly threatened by a force from the East. The Persian Safavi dynasty was one of the most dominant powers
between 1501 and 1510.1 They conquered much of Mesopotamia as well as the majority of modern day Iran along with other lands... Show more

In August of 1514, Selim led a group of janissaries to defeat the Safavi cavalry.5 A couple years after this victory, he set his eyes on a new threat that
was quite valuable. It was rumored that the Egyptians and the Persians would start an alliance to wipe out the Ottoman Empire in Europe. As soon as he
heard this, he knew what he had to do. Taking over Egypt not only eliminated his new threats, but also unveiled a new advantage. Egypt had some of
the most productive grain farms at that time. Knowing how crucial this victory would mean for his people, he wasted no time and attacked first. From
August 1516 to January 1517, Selim was able to conquer Egypt as well as Syria.6 The conquest not only eliminated future threats, but also allowed the
Ottomans to dictate many commercial trade routes through European countries, for the people could never have enough grain to feed their people.
Despite these accomplishments, the sultan was far from satisfied. The next step to dominance would be to capture

Suleyman was one of the most respected and powerful sultan's to take the throne of the Ottoman Empire. This logo exemplifies both his power and his

His military aspect is shown through the use of the Kilij, which was a type of sword used by the Ottoman's (Ottoman Kilij). The legal scale and the
Kilij represent the key values of law and war, which were both essential to Suleyman's successful rule. This logo should be used throughout the
Ottoman Empire and especially in the main cities, as it will show Turks and Arabs Suleyman's beliefs. Since Suleyman was highly religious, the
setting should be at the front of mosques, so that muslims would realize his devout personality. Muslims will be able to look up to him, as they can
see him as a religious leader. Suleyman was also a very wise and knowledgable man, as shown through his fluency in six different lagnguages: Ottoman
Turkish, Arabic, Serbian, Chagatai Turkish, Farsi, and Urdu (Szczepanski). This is used in the motto, in order to demonstrate his knowledge. The motto

The devices connected with I2C bus are either master nodes or slave nodes. The master node generates the clock and initiates communication with
slaves while the slave node receives clock signal and give a response to the master when its address is requested. It is necessary to stress that I2C bus is
a multi–master bus which means any number of master nodes can be attached. Usually a bus device operates in one or two modes of four modes
operation which are master transmit, master receive, slave transmit and slave receive. Initially the master starts master transmit mode by sending a
start bit followed by the address of the slave it wished to communicate with, after this a command would be sent and tells the slave whether it would

Alex slowly shakes his head. "Well... to put it short. A witch cursed the king and queen to never have children, and when she was about to be out on

Summary Of The Film Irobot
Underneath the sound effects, costumes and out–of–world context, films of science fiction frequently contain hypothetical implications that mimic
modern society in the way that artificial and biological life communicate. The film IRobot (2004) directed by Alex Proyas, leads readers through the
year 2035 where humans and robots life side by side, until detective Del Spooner discovers a conspiracy that may enslave the human race. IRobot
comments on the notion that, "Art Imitates Life" by using film codes, such as camera shots and colour to identify the importance of the unification of
artificial and biological intelligence, and that humankind's quest to evolve can lead to a lack of individuality. Symbolic and audio codes reveal that
technological and human power can be a corrupting force in both the fictional world and modern society. IRobot encourages viewers to take the
messages about technological danger and look at our own current society to question these controversial issues. Humans have always been ambitious,
willing to create the new and impossible, yet this has caused humankind itself to lose the spark that is their own individuality. Through symbolic and
audio codes, IRobot portrays the signification of independence and the blurred identity of our present time. IRobot displays the exaggerated lack of
character that is making society to become followers rather than leaders. At the orientation of the film, viewers see a long shot of Del Spooner walking

Architect of the Byzantine Legacy Essay examples
Architect of the Byzantine Legacy
Byzantine Emperor Justinian was the bold architect of a revitalized Byzantine Empire that would leave a lasting legacy for Western Civilization. As
much of Europe entered the Dark Ages, Justinian's vision of a restored Roman Empire would reverse the decline of the Byzantine Empire and lay a
firm foundation that would allow the Byzantine Empire to survive for centuries to come.
Justinian, whose full name was Flavius Anicius Julianus Justinianus, was born around 483 AD at Tauresium in Illyricum in theBalkans of present–day
central Europe. He was the nephew of Byzantine Emperor Justin, the son of Justin's sister Vigilantia (Fortescue).

Rome would become the capital of the Empire's western territories, while the city of Byzantium (present–day Istanbul in modern–day Turkey) was
renamed Constantinople and made the new capital of the Roman Empire (Bury 69).
From its peak under the Roman Emperors Constantine and Diocletian in the 300's, Rome importance in the Empire began to shrink. The commercial
and cultural growth of the provinces in Greece and the Near East had eclipsed the once–robust culture of Rome, where growing trade with the Far East
was creating new wealth. The Christian emperors felt more at home in the East, where Christianity, the new official religion of the Roman Empire, was
stronger and closer to its roots in Palestine, rather than in the more–pagan West (Norwich 11).
Forced from their homelands in Central and Eastern Europe by the savagery of the invading Huns, Germanic barbarian tribes invaded the western
territories of the Empire. Under constant attack, the western Empire began to shrink, losing centuries worth of territorial gains in Britain, Gaul, Spain,
and North Africa to the barbarian tribes, while the eastern territories remained strong, vital and secure. In 378, they dealt the Roman Empire a major
blow at the Battle of Adrianople (now Edirne in modern–day European Turkey), near Constantinople. In

"So what's the deal, Cap? You not gonna unwind a little bit while we're here?" Wyatt McKenzie looked at his young navigator and smiled slightly. At

It seems several of the world's greatest discoveries are on accident. Over the next several years the French and the English attempted settlements
and control on Madagascar but failed miserably, one memorable Christmas day 1672 local tribe members attacked Fort Dauphine (the current
French colony) brutally and purposefully killing fourteen men and thirteen women. This massacre is rumored to have been because these fourteen
men deserted and divorced native Malagasy women in order to marry younger and purer French women. This battle lasted a long eighteen months
as the French remained barricaded in their fort while the angry tribal members raged battle. In 1674 thirty remaining men and the one widow were

internal and external factors. Internally, the Ottomans dealt with numerous problems. First, after the death of Suleiman the Magnificent, the sultans
became weak, less energetic, and the empire suffered increasing corruption. Moreover, the Janissaries became a huge problem as they demanded higher
wages, and became very rebellious. Additionally, the size of the Ottoman Empire became problematic. The ottomans failed to keep control over their
empire, failed to expand, and as a result their economy was affected. Externally, Portuguese circumnavigation around Africa to India opened new spice
routes to Asia. As a result, the Ottoman Turks lost their monopoly on spice trade costing them a lot of money. Also, the Spanish Empire brought huge
amount of Gold and Silver into Europe which resulted in inflation and other troubles for the Ottoman Empire. The

NCAA Atheltics: Young Money Essay
To pay or not to pay, that is the question. This question, one of disparity, confronts the NCAA all the time today. Football and basketball players
generate billions of dollars in revenue for their schools but do not receive any. College athletes cannot be paid because of the "no pay" rules and the
"Principle of Amateurism." The NCAA will not have to deal with as many rule violations and scandals. Plus, the NCAA could still label an
amateurism principle without actually crossing the line with professionalism. Because athletes are focusing solely on sports and have no time to do
anything else, athletes need money to support themselves. Not only does the school acquire revenue from ticket sales, apparel and sponsorships, but it

Shapiro also offered the players services that included entertainment, yacht rentals, paid vacations, prostitutes, nightclubs, jewelry, and abortions.
Not all of what he offered was right but he still should have been allowed to pay the players bounties. The bounties he paid players caused him to
suffer in court the most. He was sentenced to a total of twenty years in federal prison. Also, at Ohio State University, five players were suspended
for five games for trading signed memorabilia for cash and tattoos at a tattoo parlor. Because of the "no pay" rules, student athletes cannot receive
any pay from that sport or any form of future assistance. Should the "no pay" rules no longer be a factor, the NCAA would not have to deal with as
many scandals that involve the paying of athletes. The only way to eliminate or greatly reduce the number of scandals is by implementing a change in
the NCAA Division I Manual.
Not only do the players play hard for the school, but they also have the potential to earn money through commercial signings and endorsements by third
party sponsors. The NCAA should lift the "Principle of Amateurism" and establish a newer one that resembles the one of the Olympics. The Olympics'
amateur model resembles the NCAA's "Principle of Amateurism" except for the fact that they do not have restrictions on commercial opportunities
such as

The Christian Influence on The Middle Ages Essay
In 312 CE, Roman Emperor Constantine achieved a victory at the Milvian Bridge. The night previous to this battle, Constantine dreamt of a cross
inscribed in hoc signo vinces, in this sign you will conquer. As trivial as this dream may seem, it ultimately signified the beginning of the rise of
Christianity. With his victory, Emperor Constantine converted toChristianity and supported and encouraged it throughout the empire. In 313 CE,
another milestone occurred as the emperors, both Constantine I of the West and Licinius of the East, signed the Edict of Milan declaring that the
Diocletianic Persecution would end, and Christianity would be tolerated in the Roman Empire. This religion began to flourish as people quickly
converted from pagan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the most important contributors of this time was Saint Benedict of Nursia. To guide Christians pursuing such a life, St. Benedict wrote Regula
Benedicti, The Rule of Saint Benedict. This book was composed of precepts for monks to follow as they lived in communal monasteries under an
abbot. Ideally, poverty, chastity, and obedience were the most sought after traits that one should follow. Saint Benedict instructed monks to participate
daily in written prayers, devotionals, manual labor, and commanded a pledge of poverty, chastity, and obedience (Benedict).
Because these rules are not just spiritually beneficial, secular impacts were gained from the monasteries way of life. Monks became a hero of the
people of the medieval times in countless ways. These monks were examples to all of a righteous way of living. When monks devoted their lives to
God, others saw the devotion exemplified in daily life. The humility the monks strived for implicated "a humble heart", "serious and humble speech",
"doing nothing except what is commended by his superiors", and "being content with the worst of everything"(Benedict). This lifestyle could infinitely
increase the quality of life for any person as it provided an example for people to become helpful, moral citizens, regardless of religious affiliation. As
Christianity and monasteries became more popular amongst people, monks traveled to

Three Laws Of Robotics
The Three Laws of Robotics were formulated by Isaac Asimov with the aim of creating a trusted protection of humans from robots and vice versa.
However, Asimov's short stories quite usually challenge the rules that he has created. This essay will discuss three Asimov short stories that present
us with certain flaws in regards to the Three Laws of Robotics. The three stories will be 'Liar!', 'Runaround', and 'That Thou Art Mindful of Him'.
Through 'Liar!', Asimov is able to question the meaning of harm, he is thus able to show that a problem will arise when considering what sort of harm
robots can protect us from. Through the short story "Runaround", Asimov questions the importance of each Law, creating scenarios in which a robot
has to disobey... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this short story, it is seen that a development which is meant to enhance the ability of robots to adhere to the Three Laws leads to the opening of
a whole new realm of problems. Keith Harriman, director of US Robots, explains that a certain model of robots is being reproduced to have the
ability to weigh every human being giving it an order in terms of factors such as age, gender and intelligence (Asimov 1974: 609–610).
Understandably, this supposed improvement to the robot is meant to ensure that the robots' ability to follow the rules is improved. More
specifically, it is meant to strengthen their adherence to the Second Law, which states, "A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings
except where such orders would conflict with the First Law" (Asimov 1974: page 605). However, in practice, this development would actually
break the First Law of Robotics. Keith Harriman states, "A robot they say, has no right to brand this person or that person as inferior. By accepting
the orders of A in preference to that of B, B is branded as of less consequence than A and his human rights are violated." (Asimov 1974: page 609)
This statement illustrates that a robot that follows an order of one human being in favour of another, would be breaking the First Law of Robotics
because the other human being would feel inferior and would be

Essay Roman Pool
Roman Pool
The private residence built by newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst in San Simeon, California is quite a site to behold. Originally named
La Cuesta Encantada it is now often referred to as Hearst Castle. It is located on a hilltop overlooking the Pacific Ocean in the Santa Lucia
Mountains. The estate took 28 years to build and includes the main house, guest houses, two pools, and acres of gardens, terraces and walkways. Its
rooms and gardens are decorated with an impressive collection of antiques from around the world. One particularly interesting building is the Roman
Pool.

274.) Only guests of Hearst were allowed to use his pool whereas anyone could go into the Baths of Caracalla. Both the Roman Pool and the baths
could be used by men and women. The main function of the pool and the baths was for recreation and socializing. Hearst's pool was not used for
bathing.
The Roman Pool is decorated from ceiling to floor with 1" square mosaic tiles. These glass tiles, called smalti, are either colored (mainly blue or
orange) or are clear with fused gold inside. The intense colors and shimmering gold of the tiles combine to create a breathtaking effect. The designs
created by the tiles were developed by muralist Camille Solon. The inspiration for some of these designs came from the 5 C. Mausoleum of Galla
Placidia (Kastner, p. I–261.)
Galla Placidia was the daughter of Roman emperor Theodosius. She built a cruciform oratory for her own mausoleum where she was to lie between her
brother Honorius and her son Valentinian. This monument to her is located in Ravenna, Italy (Hutton, p. 203.)
Hearst was affected by the beauty of the mosaics in the mausoleum and incorporated similar styles into his Roman Pool. The walls of the mausoleum
are marble but the vaulted arches are composed of blue and gold smalti. The roofs and dome are covered with mosaics of night blue, powdered with
stars (Hutton, p. 204.) The Roman Pool is similar to the mausoleum with its blue and gold color scheme and stylized star

16Th Century

  • 1. 16th Century Everyone strives to be great and leave a lasting legacy. This includes the nations of the present, present, and future. But, how do nations become great? Powerful militaries, strong economies, and stable internal affairs are what make nations great, but how are these achieved? The answer to this question can be found by looking at the past. One time period to observe is the 15th and 16th centuries. In this time many civilizations rose to new heights across the globe. Obviously the greatest of the time would be the place to look. So, what is the greatest civilization of these centuries? Like the civilizations of modern times the nations of that time were faced with unseen obstacles, mostly surrounding an unprecedented connectedness. The Ottomans... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their government was entirely based on connections. Many administrative duties were delegated to regional leaders by the sultan and under these leaders were more delegated duties. This meant that their whole government was a complicated web of connections. The government was fair and stable because the people who ran it were very close to the people they were making rules for. Given their remarkable size and diversity it is impressive that they never had any large scale revolts. Their empire included Muslims, Jews, and Christians. Despite the conflicts between these groups the Ottomans were able to quell their differences by assigning religious leaders to each province, further increasing the web of connection within the empire. Critics of the Ottoman will say that their government was too spread, without a clear leader. On the other hand, the sultan was quite powerful, as evidenced by Suleiman the Magnificent. He was a legendary leader and as sultan vastly improved the Ottoman empire. The Ottomans ruled with a firm, but steady hand. This hand was held together by a complex network of connections. The Ottomans were undoubtedly great, with their mighty military, robust economy, and firm governing. They achieved their greatness through embracing the power of connections. Being an undisputed power during the 15th and 16th century, many nations of the present and future will attempt to reach such power. Their legacy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Ottoman Empire : European Influence Of The Ottoman Empire The Ottoman empire was one of the most successful and powerful empires of their time. The empire was built to become the largest and most influential of the multitude of Muslim empires. The empire lasted many years because of its strong janissary army and rulers. It had sultans that conquered lands throughout Europe, Africa and Asia around the Anatolia region. Their military expanded over and into much of Europe, along with Islam. Though power shifted towards Europe, this shift was not inevitable. European dominance of the Anatolia region was avoidable because of the Ottoman Empire. Prior to the empire, there was dynastic civil warfare in this region. Mehemed II the conqueror, who is considered the real creator of the empire, took a newly built and advanced navy across Pera to the Bosporus, to attack both of the walls of Constantinople in order to conquer the city. He later renamed it Istanbul. Selim the Grim created the Ottoman navy, which effectively captured Mesopotamia, Egypt and Syria and was then able to acquire the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Sultan Suleiman drove the Ottoman Empire to conquering most of its lands. Suleiman conquered great cities, and introduced military machines to the great Ottoman Empire. Most of the lasting history of this empire relies on the achievements made by this one ruler. For example, "Suleiman doubled the size of the empire and oversaw its expansion throughout the Balkans and Hungary and as far west as Vienna. He also oversaw ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Under the leadership of Mehmed II, this fledgling nation became an empire with the conquest of Constantinople in 1452 by Mehmed II. The Ottoman Empire continued in its imperial form until it became the Republic of Turkey in 1923. As an empire, it was the most powerful state in the world with 32 provinces during the seventeenth century. The Janissary corps distinct social class and special privileges soon brought more harm than good to the Sultans of the eighteenth Century. The group of men grew corrupt and lived above the law. Not even the poor were given mercy. A prime example of this can be found in Lady Montague's Turkish Embassy Letters, where the janissaries slaughter and feast on the poor's livestock then require the households to pay teeth money. The lawlessness of these men grew so unbearable that Lady Montague also observes and writes about, how "'tis the Emperor's interest to flatter [the janissaries]" (Montagu, 105). The groups' power became unchecked and tension between the Sultans and janissaries magnified. Ahmed III was the first ruler of the eighteenth century. His close ties to the European rulers lead to prosperous relations with the French and Swedish. Ahmed, during his reign, afforded refuge to Charles XII of Sweden after the Swedish defeat under the hands of Peter I of Russia in the Battle of Poltava of 1709. In response to the Swedish defeat, Ahmed declared war against Russia and won the Ottoman Empire's most notorious victory over Russia. Never before had the Ottoman forces come so near to breaking the Russian power. The invasion, however, was halted in response to the incursion of Safavids. • 6. Isaac Asimov I Robot Quotes The book I, Robot is a fictional story written by Isaac Asimov. It was first published on December 2nd, 1950, but it is still a famous classic read today. In the following two paragraphs, I want to relate two quotes from the novel to a personal connection as well as a text–to–text connection respectfully. Let's start with the text–to–text connection. In the beginning of the novel where my first quotation is found, we are introduced to Gloria, an innocent child, and Robbie the robot, who was Gloria's best buddy and caregiver. During the beginning of the novel, Gloria was furious that her mother correlated Robbie to a machine, as Gloria thought the contrary to her mother. She believed that "he was a person just like you and me and he was [her] friend" (Asimov 28), and while robots are not human and are not made of flesh and blood, Gloria believed that the robots are capable of feeling and interacting with humans just as if humans were interacting... Both represent isolation of a certain "species" due to the mistrust, tension, and stereotypes they have between one another, and both show that even though there is no valid reason as to why they should not trust one another, there is still conflict between the Blacks and Whites nowadays in all parts of the world just like there is conflict between Gloria's mother and the ... • 7. Analysis Of Issac Asimov's I Robot Robots are a more important part of society now then they have ever been. Issac Asimov lived in a time where robots were merely an idea, but that didn't stop him from using this idea of a robot to represent different aspects of humanity throughout the chapters of his book I, Robot. Asimov's book reflects on human nature and what it means to be human. Reflecting can help people to better understand themselves and the people that surround them. One part of human nature that Asimov brings up is the idea that even lies with good intentions can cause harm. In I, Robot, one of the robots has the ability to read minds, but the first "Law of Robotics" does not allow robots to harm human in any way, including hurt feelings. "Do you suppose that if I asked a question, it wouldn't give exactly that answer that one wants to hear? Wouldn't any other answer hurt us, and wouldn't Herbie know that?" (Asimov 108). This robot was doing everything it could not to hurt any of the humans and it did this by lying to them. This is something that many people can relate to, whether it is lying to someone by telling them they threw a good party or that it couldn't be attended because of a fake appointment, telling the truth wouldn't benefit anyone. By recognizing that lying is a part of human nature, it can be understood why someone might choose to lie. The relationships made throughout life would only benefit from empathizing with another's thought process. Asimov adds to the idea of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In a world where separation between church and state does not exist, a Christian becoming the sole emperor of Rome symbolized a huge turning point in history. What confuses me is that the base of their religion seems very much involved with the government. That alone would not be surprising, since many religions share that quality; but, Donatus "insisted on complete separation of this Spirit–directed Church from the state" (164). Separation of church and state was a big issue in the beginning of Christianity, mostly because it didn't exist. God supposedly chose the emperor Constantine and in turn Constantine chose Christianity as the empire's official religion.
  • 22. Why Is It So Important To The Ottoman's Defeat? Throughout the history of many successful countries, there were times of war and despair. Wars not only destroy humans and buildings, but cultures and ideas as well. For one country, its harmonious state of peace was terminated. When the Ottoman Empire attacked the Hungarians in the sixteenth century, they triggered numerous conflicts lasting many years that would leave devastating battle scars on Hungary's face. It all started when the Sultan of the Ottoman's waged a war that would change the route of Hungary's history forever: The Battle of MohГЎcs. Long before this battle for conquest could have begun, the Ottomans were greatly threatened by a force from the East. The Persian Safavi dynasty was one of the most dominant powers between 1501 and 1510.1 They conquered much of Mesopotamia as well as the majority of modern day Iran along with other lands... In August of 1514, Selim led a group of janissaries to defeat the Safavi cavalry.5 A couple years after this victory, he set his eyes on a new threat that was quite valuable. It was rumored that the Egyptians and the Persians would start an alliance to wipe out the Ottoman Empire in Europe. As soon as he heard this, he knew what he had to do. Taking over Egypt not only eliminated his new threats, but also unveiled a new advantage. Egypt had some of the most productive grain farms at that time. Knowing how crucial this victory would mean for his people, he wasted no time and attacked first. From August 1516 to January 1517, Selim was able to conquer Egypt as well as Syria.6 The conquest not only eliminated future threats, but also allowed the Ottomans to dictate many commercial trade routes through European countries, for the people could never have enough grain to feed their people. The legal scale and the Kilij represent the key values of law and war, which were both essential to Suleyman's successful rule. This logo should be used throughout the Ottoman Empire and especially in the main cities, as it will show Turks and Arabs Suleyman's beliefs. Since Suleyman was highly religious, the setting should be at the front of mosques, so that muslims would realize his devout personality. Muslims will be able to look up to him, as they can see him as a religious leader. • 29. Summary Of The Film Irobot Underneath the sound effects, costumes and out–of–world context, films of science fiction frequently contain hypothetical implications that mimic modern society in the way that artificial and biological life communicate. The film IRobot (2004) directed by Alex Proyas, leads readers through the year 2035 where humans and robots life side by side, until detective Del Spooner discovers a conspiracy that may enslave the human race. IRobot comments on the notion that, "Art Imitates Life" by using film codes, such as camera shots and colour to identify the importance of the unification of artificial and biological intelligence, and that humankind's quest to evolve can lead to a lack of individuality. Symbolic and audio codes reveal that technological and human power can be a corrupting force in both the fictional world and modern society. IRobot encourages viewers to take the messages about technological danger and look at our own current society to question these controversial issues. Humans have always been ambitious, willing to create the new and impossible, yet this has caused humankind itself to lose the spark that is their own individuality. Through symbolic and audio codes, IRobot portrays the signification of independence and the blurred identity of our present time. IRobot displays the exaggerated lack of character that is making society to become followers rather than leaders. Rome would become the capital of the Empire's western territories, while the city of Byzantium (present–day Istanbul in modern–day Turkey) was renamed Constantinople and made the new capital of the Roman Empire (Bury 69). From its peak under the Roman Emperors Constantine and Diocletian in the 300's, Rome importance in the Empire began to shrink. The commercial and cultural growth of the provinces in Greece and the Near East had eclipsed the once–robust culture of Rome, where growing trade with the Far East was creating new wealth. The Christian emperors felt more at home in the East, where Christianity, the new official religion of the Roman Empire, was stronger and closer to its roots in Palestine, rather than in the more–pagan West (Norwich 11). Forced from their homelands in Central and Eastern Europe by the savagery of the invading Huns, Germanic barbarian tribes invaded the western territories of the Empire. Under constant attack, the western Empire began to shrink, losing centuries worth of territorial gains in Britain, Gaul, Spain, and North Africa to the barbarian tribes, while the eastern territories remained strong, vital and secure. • 41. Three Laws Of Robotics The Three Laws of Robotics were formulated by Isaac Asimov with the aim of creating a trusted protection of humans from robots and vice versa. However, Asimov's short stories quite usually challenge the rules that he has created. This essay will discuss three Asimov short stories that present us with certain flaws in regards to the Three Laws of Robotics. The three stories will be 'Liar!', 'Runaround', and 'That Thou Art Mindful of Him'. Through 'Liar!', Asimov is able to question the meaning of harm, he is thus able to show that a problem will arise when considering what sort of harm robots can protect us from. Through the short story "Runaround", Asimov questions the importance of each Law, creating scenarios in which a robot has to disobey... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this short story, it is seen that a development which is meant to enhance the ability of robots to adhere to the Three Laws leads to the opening of a whole new realm of problems. Keith Harriman, director of US Robots, explains that a certain model of robots is being reproduced to have the ability to weigh every human being giving it an order in terms of factors such as age, gender and intelligence (Asimov 1974: 609–610). Understandably, this supposed improvement to the robot is meant to ensure that the robots' ability to follow the rules is improved. More specifically, it is meant to strengthen their adherence to the Second Law, which states, "A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law" (Asimov 1974: page 605). However, in practice, this development would actually break the First Law of Robotics. Keith Harriman states, "A robot they say, has no right to brand this person or that person as inferior. By accepting the orders of A in preference to that of B, B is branded as of less consequence than A and his human rights are violated." (Asimov 1974: page 609) This statement illustrates that a robot that follows an order of one human being in favour of another, would be breaking the First Law of Robotics because the other human being would feel inferior and would be ... Only guests of Hearst were allowed to use his pool whereas anyone could go into the Baths of Caracalla. Both the Roman Pool and the baths could be used by men and women. The main function of the pool and the baths was for recreation and socializing. Hearst's pool was not used for bathing. The Roman Pool is decorated from ceiling to floor with 1" square mosaic tiles. These glass tiles, called smalti, are either colored (mainly blue or orange) or are clear with fused gold inside. The intense colors and shimmering gold of the tiles combine to create a breathtaking effect. The designs created by the tiles were developed by muralist Camille Solon. The inspiration for some of these designs came from the 5 C. Mausoleum of Galla Placidia (Kastner, p. I–261.) Galla Placidia was the daughter of Roman emperor Theodosius. She built a cruciform oratory for her own mausoleum where she was to lie between her brother Honorius and her son Valentinian. This monument to her is located in Ravenna, Italy (Hutton, p. 203.) Hearst was affected by the beauty of the mosaics in the mausoleum and incorporated similar styles into his Roman Pool. The walls of the mausoleum are marble but the vaulted arches are composed of blue and gold smalti. The roofs and dome are covered with mosaics of night blue, powdered with stars (Hutton, p. 204.) The Roman Pool is similar to the mausoleum with its blue and gold color scheme and stylized star
