The Confederate Flag As A Symbol Of American History
The Confederate Flag Recently there has been a big debate over the nation for the flying confederate
flag.Is the confederate flag a true symbol of "Heritage or Hate"? Many states in America's south had
the confederate flag as a part of their state flag, but this has been changed over the past few months.
The confederate flag has been known and flown for many battles over the past century and a half,
which was ever since thebeginning of the Civil War in 1861. Some people today see this flag as a
symbol of hatred and are willing to get rid of it by taking it down. On the other hand, some people
see this flag as a symbol of American history and want to keep this flag flying for heritage. The real
question is who is right and why? On July 10th, 2015 the confederate flag was finally taken down,
along with the pole it flew on.After one hundred and fifty–four years this flag will forever be gone.
Many people were happy and glad to see the confederate flag go because it has lately been seen as a
symbol of hate.On June 17th, there was a shooting massacre in Charleston, South Carolina that was
related to the confederate flag. This was all the more reason to take down the flag and to keep
people from egging on hatred toward African–American people. On July 8th, 2015 a debate was
held to see if the people wanted the flag to stay flying or to be taken down. "By 6:30 p.m.,the
chamber was engaged in an extended debate over a Pitts amendment that would remove the battle

The Battle Of The Civil War
Authors: Teni Adebayo– Blue Michael Mikhaiel–Red There were many major events that occurred
in the state of Texas, but none of them were as disastrous as the ones that happened in the Civil War.
The Civil War was the war with the most American deaths. Many battles happened in Texas, but in
the Civil War there were many significant battles that took place in Texas. The first battle of the
Civil war that was fought on Texas soil was the Battle of Sabine Pass. This battle was another
attempt by the Union to get part of Texas from the Confederacy. The reason why the Union was
trying to take part of Texas ,and the states southern of the Mississippi river back to the union, was
because of the cotton they produced. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another victory for the Confederacy. On July 1861 the Union Navy began another blockade at
Galveston Harbor. The union sent Harriet Lane flying a flag of truce. This meant if they did not
surrender they would attack them. Four of the Union 's steamers entered and went straight to where
Harriet Lane was. The Confederates saw this and started shooting at the Union. The U.S. Navy
answered back with guns. Finally the Union disabled one of the confederate 's guns at Fort Point,
then went for the other two. Two Rebel guns started firing on Union ships. The boat that Col. Cook
had sent now approached the Union ships and two of the Confederate officers boarded the U.S.S
Westfield. Renshaw demanded a surrender of Galveston or he would start shelling. Col. Cook
refused Renshaw 's terms, and Renshaw threatened to start shelling and made plans for towing the
mortar boat into position. One of the major Confederate officers wanted to talk to col. Cook,
because Commander Renshaw and him made a truce that will last for four days to make sure all the
women, children, and Aliens out of the city. Cook allowed this but added if Renshaw moved his
troop any closer that Cook would let his troops go south. Since this truce wasn 't written down it
caused problems later. The Confederates did indeed evacuate, taking everything they had including
their weapons, ammunition, supplies and whatever else they could carry. Renshaw did not think that

The Battle Of The American Civil War
The American Civil War was fought from April 12th 1861 to May 9th 1865 to mark the bloodiest
clash in American history. The civil war started as a result of differences between the free and slave
states over the authority of the national government to outlaw slavery in the Southern states. The
economy of the northern states had modernized and industrialization had taken root. They had
invested heavily in their transport system, financial industries and communications network. The
Southern economy produced cotton in large scale and relied slave labor. There was need to expand
their economic empire and outlawing slavery could be detrimental to its progress. When Abraham
Lincoln the candidate of antislavery Republican Party won the presidential election in 1860, the
southern states seceded organizing as the Confederates States of America. On April 12, 1861, they
opened fire on Fort Sumter at South Carolina. Lincoln called militia to suppress the rebels. Four
more states joined the rebels and by the end of 1861, several battles had taken place. (Nicholas
Greenwood Onuf, 2006) In 1861, military actions began in Virginia where non slave holding pro–
Union Virginians sought to secede from the Confederacy. McClellan in command of federal forces
in southern Ohio encountered small forces sent by Lee and won three significant battles. His
victories helped toward elimination of Confederate resistance in northwestern Virginia which had
refused to recognize secession. On May 6, Lee

The Battle Of Bull Run. The American Civil War Was Fought
The Battle of Bull Run
The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine whether the Union or
Confederacy would survive. The fight would take place between the North, called Union states and
the South, called Confederate states. The Confederate states wanted to leave the North and South
union and stand on their own.
The war started on April 12, 1861 when Confederate forces attacked a Union military base at Fort
Sumter in South Carolina. The reason the war started at this time was that Abraham Lincoln had just
been elected President in 1860. Abraham Lincoln wanted to end slavery but keep the union together.
The North had an increase of industry and the South still depended on farming the land. However,
the South ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The battle was also known as the Battle of First Manassas. This was the first major battle of the
Civil War. Even though the Union Army outnumbered the Confederate Army, the experience of the
Confederate Army made the difference and they won that battle.
The Confederate reinforcements had time to arrive by railroad because the Union 's forces were
slow positioning themselves. Even though the Union and Confederate sides had about 18,000 troops
in their first battle, they were not trained and they were led poorly. The outcome of this battle was a
Confederate victory. The Union forces suffered a disorganized retreat of their troops. Union troops
marched from the Federal capital in Washington, D.C. to strike a Confederate force along a small
river known as Bull Run. After fighting on the defensive for most of the day, the rebels rallied and
were able to break the Union right flank, sending them into a chaotic retreat towards Washington.
The Confederate victory gave the South a false confidence and shocked many in the North, who
realized the war would not be won as easily as they had hoped.
By July 1861, the northern press and the public were eager for the Union Army to make an advance
on Richmond, ahead of the planned meeting of the Confederate Congress there on July 20, 1861.
Encouraged by early victories of Union troops in western Virginia, and by the war fever spreading

The War between the States
The Civil War also known as the War Between the States was a war fought from 1861 to 1865. The
war was fought in the United States after seven Southern slave sates declared their separation to
form the Confederate States of America. The Southern states were known as the Confederacy. But,
the states that remained which were the Northern States were called the Union. The War was the
deadliest war in American history; it killed approximately 620,000 soldiers. The soldiers died from
combat, accidents, starvation, and diseases. The Southern States declared secession because they did
not want to get rid of slavery. However, the Northern States and Abraham Lincoln had abolished
slavery and were completely against it. This made the Southern states upset; it became the major
cause of The Civil War.
On April 12, 1861, the deadliest was begun, shots were fired. The Confederate soldiers attacked the
Union's Fort Sumter in South Carolina. General Beauregard sent Major Anderson a message an hour
before the attack saying he would fire if Anderson and his soldiers didn't surrender. An hour passed
and Anderson did not surrender so the firing began. Major Anderson and 68 of his soldiers were
inside the fort when the attack began. A couple months prior Anderson moved his troops from Fort
Moultrie to Fort Sumter, because he thought Fort Sumter was more protected. Fort Sumter had been
the only fort in South Carolina that was not seized. On the day of the attack when the Confederate
opened fire,

Slavery And The Civil War
Abraham Lincoln once said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." In the 1800s, the
American nation was slowly becoming a house divided against itself. The United States were no
longer united, mainly over the issue of slavery. In fact, many historians believe that, "From the
nation's founding, the issue of slavery threatened to tear the United States apart." ("The Civil War"
1). The issue of slavery was always kept at bay through the utilization of various compromises;
however a permanent solution was never sought after by the government. The peoples' perspective
of slavery differed by region. In the South, the economy was extremely reliant on farming and
agriculture. These areas required slave labor, so Southerners favored slavery. However, in the North,
many people were pro–abolition and called for the end of slavery ("Slavery: Three Points of View"
2). These varying ideals about slavery ultimately lead to the start of the Civil War. When Lincoln,
the Republican, pro–abolition candidate, won the Election of 1860, Southern states began to secede
from the United States. Within 6 months of Lincoln's election, the Confederate States of America
had been created ("The Civil War" 1). The Confederacy despised the principles of the North, or the
Union, and was ready to go to war in order to settle their differences. This war would forever change
life in America and even break down society's barriers between the races. In short, key battles and
the abolition of slavery are

The Civil War : The Greatest And Most Catastrophic War Essay
The Civil War is an essential event in America 's history. The Civil War determined what kind of
nation the United States would be. Would it be a breakable confederation of absolute states or an
indivisible nation with an absolute national government ? Northern victory of the war protected the
United States as one nation and ended the foundation of slavery which had separated the country
initially. However, those results came at the value of many lives.Nearly 625,000 American soldiers
lives were lost in all the wars combined. The Civil War was the greatest and most catastrophic battle
in the Western world. It was caused because of stubborn differences between free and slave states
over the government on whether or not to prohibit slavery amongst territories that were not yet
states. Once President Abraham Lincoln was elected and pledged to prevent slavery in those
territories , seven slave states withdrew and formed a new nation called the Confederate States of
America. Abraham Lincoln's administration refused to recognize the authority of secession. They
worried it would destroy the democracy. The event that caused the war was the Battle of Fort
Sumter.
To begin with, Fort Sumter is located in South Carolina. It is the main point of where the Civil War
started. The first shots were fired here. Fort Sumter was built after the War of 1812 to reassure the
defense of its southern harbors. After South Carolina withdrew from the Union, Union forces
inhabited the unfinished Fort

Communist Leader Joseph Stalin : The Death Of One Man
Communist leader Joseph Stalin once promulgated "The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of
millions is a statistic." Attesting to the manner in which war assimilates the mind into accepting
death, Stalin's words came to fruition in the minds of leaders during the American Civil War, a four
year strife over sectionalism. While both sides suffered heavy losses, the Union was ultimately able
to defeat the Confederates States of America in 1865 after the Confederates surrendered.
Nonetheless, such defeat could have been avoided in the case that the South held true to their values
and exhibited the resilience which many believed characterized the South. All in all, the Civil War

Thus, there is much to ask in regard to the question, "How did the South lose, when one takes into
considerations their numerous advantages?" Foremost the North, also referred to as the Union, had
their advantages in facets such as leadership, industry, etc. Therefore, they were secure logistically,
and strategically. Hence, when likened to Sun Tzu's proclamations, the Confederate's enemy, the
Union, were "[...] secure at all points." While the South was superior in some regards, neither side
was substantially dominant in comparison to the opposition. Initially, the South had decided on a
defensive strategy which seemed conducive to success when taking into consideration the state of
firearm technology at the time. In John Cook's address titled "Could the South have Won the War,"
he states "STRATEGY 1 – Davis 1 or "Cordon Defence" Strategy: This strategy was used for much
of the first year of the War and involved positioning troops around the whole of the periphery of the
Confederacy in an attempt to defend all of its territory, [...] In the wake of these Federal incursions,
the South abandoned their efforts to hold all of their territory." (Cook 4) Such sentiments affirm the
South's initial defensive strategy, which was viewed as an unequivocal strategy for the South to use.
Howbeit, the tumble to their eventual demise lied in the fact that they dismissed their original

The End Of The American Civil War
"The US Civil War was incontrovertibly the bloodiest, most devastating conflict in American
history, and it remains unknown – and unknowable – exactly how many men died in Union and
Confederate uniform" (Nasaw, 2012). At the end of the American Civil War, in 1865 slavery was
abolished, the military was greatly enhanced, and the great nation of America became whole again
with the North and South being brought together. In the mid 19th century, the United States of
America was experiencing an era of growth. The only problem was the North and South had an
economical difference. The North established manufacturing and industry. While the South's
economy was based on large–scaled farming, which relied on the labor of African American slaves
to grow and harvest certain crops. Tobacco and cotton were the main crops that was grown. After the
abolishment of the slaves in the North, the South felt like they were going to have to remove the
slaves also. They feared this because the people of the South knew that the economy was going to
fall tremendously. The abolishment of the slaves had spread westward and this is when the South
became concerned even more. "In 1854 the Kansas–Nebraska Act overturned the Missouri
Compromise's use of latitude as the boundary between slave and free territory and instead, using the
principle of popular sovereignty, decreed that the residents would determine whether the area
became a free state or a slave state" (Foner & Garraty, 1991). The people that

The Battle Of The Confederacy
In some ways the confederacy is more alive and active today than it was in the 1860s. Arguments
over its symbols, its flags, its leaders, its memorials, and its legacy have been almost constant over
the past several years. These battles are always about one thing, the meaning of the confederacy.
This usually devolves into an "it's about slavery, it's about states' rights" argument with neither side
listening to the other, each side convinced that it is right. Nevertheless, the question remains: what
did it mean to be a confederate during the Civil War? The men, women, and children who consider
themselves confederates during the 1860s created a nation, believed so strongly that they fought and
died to defend it, and then saw that nation disappear into nothing. How do you reconcile that lost?
How do you justify the pain and suffering that your family endured for it all to be in vain? You do it
through myth and legend; you do it with the hope that the idea of the confederacy lives on even
though the nation itself does not, and in that regard it succeeded. The ideal and myth of the
confederacy not only outlasted the confederacy itself, but transcended into the very essence of
American culture as the Lost Cause. The idea of the Lost Cause strives to show the war from the
perspective of south, in the best possible light. Developed by white southerners in a postwar climate
of economic, racial, and political uncertainty, the Lost Cause seeks to create a romanticized version

The Confederate States of America
Concerning the Confederate States of America, Representative Corrine Brown stated, "Southern
states in the Confederacy were not ready to give up their fight to secede or give up their way of life,
which was made possible in large part by the blood, sweat, and tears of African slaves." The
Confederate States of America was a group of eleven states that seceded from the Union as a result
of conflicting opinions of what a state's rights were. The Confederacy was characterized by three
major events, its formation, its part in the Civil War, and Reconstruction of the South following the
war.

only Congress could control the readmission of the Southern states, and it was now up to them to
direct Reconstruction (Grussendorf, 223).
When Congress passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867, what was once the Confederacy was divided
into five military districts with an officer over each of them. If a state wanted to be readmitted, it had
to ratify the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments, making slavery illegal and freed slaves, or
freedmen, citizens of the United States (Grussendorf, 224).
During the election of 1877, there was a dispute over the electoral votes. The Democrats agreed to
allow the Republican candidate Rutherford B. Hayes to become President, but only under certain
conditions. With what became known as the Compromise of 1877, Hayes would become the
president; but all troops must be removed from the South; Hayes must appoint at least one
Southerner to his Cabinet; and federal money must be given to help the South's economy recover
from the turmoil of Reconstruction. Reconstruction in the South ended with the Compromise of

The Civil War. America's bloodiest war since the creation of the country. It has been accounted that
over six hundred and twenty thousand deaths occurred during this major conflicts between The
Confederate and The Union States. Was there a turning point? A battle which changed the tide
completely? Among the major battles we can find The Battle of Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Stones

know it could've changed within a matter of minutes had the events occurred differently.
In order to understand how this war played out we must look it on all angles. The generals, leading
reasons, battle zones, tactics and dates are all critical details when researching on war topics. The
leading generals of the Union included Ulysses S Grant and George McClelland while the
confederates were led by Robert E Lee and Thomas Jackson. The countries divided were in need of
a leader who not only supported their actions but also felt the shared ideas; a president. The
Confederates chose Jefferson Davis and the Union chose Abraham Lincoln as president. The
presidential elections were a cause behind the revolt and secession of the Confederate states.
The battles of the Civil War affected the public emotionally, physically and economically. The battle

A culture is the beliefs and interests of a particular group of people. About 150 years ago, a proud
and noble culture was created in the Southern portion of the United States. It was created by
Southerners from all walks of life, ranging from the gentry to the "good ol' boys." They loved their
culture so much that they created a country. It was a country of blue skies, green hills, beautiful
meadows and forests, and old–fashioned Southern hospitality. There were large plantations that
grew some of the finest crops in the world. Though this country seemed Utopian, its creation soon

there were no casualties on either side. From April 17 to May 20, four more states seceded from the

The Civil War And The Confederate States Of America Essay
The American Civil War is a civil war between 1861 and 1865 involving the United States or ("the
Union") and the Confederate States of America ("the Confederacy"), led by Jefferson Davis,
consisting of eleven southern slave states that had seceded from the United States. The Union
included all abolitionist states and five "borderline" slave states and was headed by Abraham
Lincoln and the Republican Party. The latter was opposed to the expansion of slavery in the
territories held by the United States, and his victory in the presidential election of 1860 led to the
first secession of seven southern states, even before Lincoln took office. For four years, Southerners
or Confederates, commanded by Beauregard, Jackson, and Lee fought the Northerners or Federals,
commanded by Scott McClellan, Burnside, Sherman, and Grant, in a series of deadly battles, where
the successes and setbacks swayed between the protagonists.
The cause of the war
The Civil War was the culmination of a social, political, philosophical and economic crisis that
began at the birth of the United States. The question of slavery had not ceased dividing the country
since its foundation. In the 1850s, the question of the abolition of slavery became more and more
important Discussions in the Congress and the press between the opponents and the defenders of
slavery were ardent than ever. The southern states were anti–abolitionist because their economy was
essentially based on cotton monoculture, which required a

Gettysburg A Turning Point Essay
The Civil War of the United States was one of the foundations that made this country what it is
today. However, it is believed that one battle determined the outcome of this War. If this battle had
gone another way, the United States that we know today would not exist as it is. This is the battle of
Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg represents a vital turning point during the Civil War because it
was the battle with most casualties in the United States, it restored the faith of the Union Army and
the confederates never gained back the offensive position resulting in the Union Army gaining the
victory of this war.
According to General Meade, this three day battle (July 1st– 3rd, 1863) went down as follows. The

It was not until 7 pm that there were good reports of the union. Early evening of the 1st, Meade
ordered all troops to concentrate at Gettysburg because of the good reports. At 10 pm of the 1st he

the light to come out to arrange positions and inspect the field. By 7am he had place all the corps
where they belonged. While this happened, the confederates were going up to them. (Meade) The
Confederate army, then, started attacking the left so reinforcements were sent there leaving the right
vulnerable and Confederates took advantage and attacked right and advanced here. The quite lines
remained still until 1 pm on the 3rd then the Confederates started bombing and gunning over 125
guns (according to Meade). This continued for two hours but Meade ordered to not fire back, so the
Confederates started to advance toward the Union, believing that they were retreating. But when the
Confederates were on eyesight, the Union attacked. This ended the battle because it caught the
Confederate army by surprise. Meade felt that there was no possible way to express how well his
army had done in this battle and how hard they had fought. He claimed that the victory was a work
of all of the men who fought together with him, in addition to the help of God, and that this would
go on in time as a memorable thing (Meade, 325).

McClellan's apprehension robbed him of victory and allowed Lee's forces to consolidate prior to the
Battle of Antietam (Davis, 1999). If McClellan had defied Allan Pinkerton's human intelligence
information claiming the Confederacy consisted of 120,000 soldiers, he could have defeated Lee
prior to the battle of Antietam (Cannon, 1994). Lee relied heavily on J.E.B. Stuart's scout unit for
reconnaissance missions to gather intelligence on the enemy's position and troop strength (Cannon,
1994).
On September 17, 1862, the Union army attacked the Confederacy, with Union soldiers
outnumbering Confederate soldiers 87,000 to 35,000 (Davis, 1999). Lee knew he was outnumbered,
so he ordered Jackson's two divisions to support Hood's command on the Union left flank, while
Walker supported the right (Cannon, 1994). McClellan's battle plan consisted of simultaneous
attacks from the left and right side, with a final attack to the Confederate center. Union Regiment
commander Major General Brunside was late in initiating his attack, which threw off McClellan's
entire battle plan. The Confederate forces managed to stabilize their positon, while McClellan
reassessed his position. He sent troops to attack the center of the Confederate army, despite
staggering small arms fire (Stevens, 1994). The battle ended with overwhelming loses on both sides,
leaving the soldiers broken and unmotivated to finish the battle (Davis, 1999).

Differences: From Constitution To The Confederate States
In February 1861, the Southern States of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia
and Louisiana met in Montgomery Alabama to establish the Confederate States of America. During
this meeting, the state's decided on a new constitution that was adopted on March 11, 1861. The
constitution was very similar to the constitution of the United States, but with a few differences. One
difference is that there was a greater emphasis on the rights of the individual states and support of
slavery. States right and slavery were very important to the south and it, unfortunately became their
downfall. Another difference is the president is elected for one six year term and, once elected,

The Fluidity of the American Civil War
The American Civil War, widely known in the United States as simply the Civil War as well as other
sectional names, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union or
independence for the Confederacy. Among the 34 states in January 1861, seven Southern slave
states individually declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate
States of America. The Confederacy, often simply called the South, grew to include eleven states,
and although they claimed thirteen states and additional western territories, the Confederacy was
never diplomatically recognized by a foreign country. The states that remained loyal and did not
declare secession were known as the Union or the North. The war had ... Show more content on

Slavery was the central source of escalating political tension in the 1850s. The Republican Party was
determined to prevent any spread of slavery, and many Southern leaders had threatened secession if
the Republican candidate, Lincoln, won the 1860 election. After Lincoln had won without carrying a
single Southern state, many Southern whites felt that disunion had become their only option,
because they thought that they were losing representation, which would hamper their ability to
promote pro–slavery acts and policies.
Root causes
Slavery. Contemporary actors, the Union and Confederate leadership and fighting soldiers on both
sides believed that slavery caused the Civil War. Union men mainly believed the war was to
emancipate the slaves. Confederates fought to protect southern society, and slavery as an integral
part of it. From the anti–slavery perspective, the issue was primarily about whether the system of
slavery was an anachronistic evil that was incompatible with Republicanism in the United States.
The strategy of the anti–slavery forces was containment – to stop the expansion and thus put slavery
on a path to gradual extinction. The slave–holding interests in the South denounced this strategy as
infringing upon their Constitutional rights. Southern whites believed that the emancipation of slaves
would destroy the South's economy because of the alleged laziness of blacks under free labor.

Political Reasons For Confederate States
Some political reason is that the Confederate States of America which also (additionally called the
South) wanted each state more independent than the federation, or confederacy. This was
demonstrated by the Confederacy. Its constitution was virtually an exact facsimile of the United

how to make money. Slaves worked on the plantations owned by whites which that harvested

The incrementing number of free slaves contributed to the political reasons. From 60,000 in 1790

the South. But, their liberation was restricted with the law and cause racial prejudice. Sometimes
political rights were against them. Restrictions in the North were less rigorous but there was
additionally racial prejudice. Liberated blacks and white men fought for jobs. Violence was a big
thing arose in cities because of race.
Disunity within the Whig and Democratic Parties arose over territorial expansion, impinging on
slavery. The Southern Whigs went over to the Democratic Party side. The Northern Whigs went

The Civil War : A Building Block Of The Constitution
The Civil War was a building block of the Constitution we have today. If the Civil War would not
have been fought, the United States would look very different –– it would be divided, years behind
in its addressing of racial issues, and certain Constitutional issues, especially involving states' rights,
would never have been resolved. After decades of heated tensions between the Northern and
Southern states over state rights and federal authority, slavery and westward expansion it finally
exploded into the Civil war on April 12, 1861. The presidential election of anti–slavery republican
Abraham Lincoln in the year 1860 caused 7 southern states to secede from the union. After the first
shots of the civil war were fired 4 more states joined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The congress then kept the peace and agreed on a two part compromise granting Missouri its request
upon entering the union as a free state and also admitted Maine as a free state. The Missouri
compromise also was a product of an amendment that was passed creating an imaginary line across
the former Louisiana territory establishing the boundary of free and slave states. The Missouri
Compromise held the union together for about 30 years until it was repelled by the Kansas–
Nebraska act of 1854. The Kansas–Nebraska Act was passed by the U.S. Congress on May 30,
1854. It allowed people in the states of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether they
did or did not allow slavery within their borders repelling the Compromise which prohibited slavery
north of latitude 36°30´. Three years later, the Supreme Court in the Dred Scott case declared the
Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, stating that congress was prohibited by the 5th amendment
from depriving citizens from private properties such as slaves. Basically stating that even though the
north has banned slavery, they are still required to return fleeing slaves to their rightful owners. Fort
Sumter was the scene where it all went down. Located on Charleston Harbor in South Carolina was
a fort meant to protect the state from amphibious attacks. U.S. Major Robert Anderson took over the
unfinished fort not long after North Carolina Seceded from the Union. The Union forces

The United States And The Civil War
The lives that we live and the freedoms that we have today may be considered great for the majority
of our population. This could be attributed to the history of the United States and the civil war. What
would our country be like if the Confederacy won the war? How would our lives be impacted and
what freedoms would we have today if that were the case? What if the major Union victories were
actually Confederate victories? The following is just an idea of what potentially could have
happened if this were the case. There was intense fighting that occurred throughout the United and
Confederate States of America ranging from Texas and as far north as Pennsylvania as well as Naval

If the Confederate Army had been in control, the slaves would have eventually been freed due to the
Emancipation Proclamation established by Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
The battle of Fort Donelson took place in Tennessee during February of 1862. The significance of
this battle was that Fort Donelson was considered to be the heart of the Confederacy. Fort Donelson
was a Confederate built fortress used to control the Cumberland River. Fort Donelson was quickly
over–run by General Ulysses S. Grant and Union Forces. If the fighting at Fort Donelson were
reversed, the Union would not be able to use the fort as a staging area and would not allow them to
advance the front lines in their favor. With the Confederate Army occupying Fort Donelson, they
would be able to have a central point to bring casualties, make plans for future battles in the area,
and house their soldiers allowing for higher morale and a better rested fighting force. Remaining in
control of Fort Donelson would also allow for the Confederate to have better vantage points for
potential Union attacks.
Virginia was the location of the Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Appomattox Courthouse, which
were the first and last battles of the American Civil War. Virginia was also the home of the
Confederate capital, Richmond. The majority of the notable battles in Virginia were Confederate
victories, until around 1864–1865 when Richmond was set ablaze by the retreating Confederate
soldiers during a Union

Kentucky 's Role During The Civil War
Kentucky's Role during the Civil War The world has faced the dangers of war almost since the
beginnings of time, and America in the mid–1800's was no different. Despite the Union having won
its freedom from England during the Revolutionary War less than a century before, problems were
brewing internally within the young and rapidly expanding country. As slavery boomed in the
southern states, the North grew less and less content with this state of affairs. It is said that "to
southern whites, the Republican victory in 1860 presented an immediate danger to the slave–owning
republic that had existed since 1776" (Henretta, 2012, p. 418). Southerners were not ready to lose
one of their most valuable commodities, slaves, which they feared would happen under the
leadership of Abraham Lincoln, although he promised "to safeguard slavery where it existed but
vowed to prevent its expansion" (Henretta, 2012, p. 420). Unheeding of Lincoln's vows, and hoping
to preserve the individual state's rights, "radical southerners chose the dangerous enterprise of
secession" (Henretta, 2012, p. 418). This secession began first in the state of South Carolina, when
on December 20, 1860 a unanimous vote was taken " to dissolve 'the union now subsisting between
South Carolina and the other states'" (Henretta, 2012, p.418). This idea of secession spread quickly
to the surrounding southern states, resulting in five other states declaring secession within the
month. At a meeting of the seceding

The Constitution Of The Confederate States
The Constitution of the Confederate States of America was the supreme law of the Confederate
States of America, as adopted on March 11, 1861, and in effect from February 22, 1862 through the
conclusion of the American Civil War.[1] The Confederacy also operated under a Provisional
Constitution from February 8, 1861 to February 22, 1862.[2] The original Provisional Constitution
is currently located at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia,[3] and differs slightly
from the version later adopted. The final, hand–written document is currently located in the
University of Georgia archives at Athens, Georgia.[3]
In regard to most articles of the Constitution, the document is a word–for–word duplicate of the
United States Constitution. However, there are crucial differences between the two documents, in
tone and legal content, primarily regarding slavery.[1][4][5]

Mississippi's Civil War : A Narrative History
Mississippi's Civil War: A Narrative History begins by providing the account of the Nullification
Crisis that took place in 1832. The crisis began as a dispute between the state of South Carolina and
the federal government over a series of national tariffs that many of the southerners viewed as
excessive. (6) The leader of the nullification movement in Mississippi was John Anthony Quitman.
Quitman died in 1859 and Mississippi finally left the Union in 1861. (8) As a result of the
Nullification crisis, the Mexican War took place. Many Mississippians volunteered to fight with
much enthusiasm. After nearly two years of war, America won. (11) From 1840–1860 Mississippi's
population doubled to almost 800,000 residents and by 1860 Mississippi's institutions were
hopelessly entangled in the web of slavery. The cotton based agriculture increased the need for
slaves and by the eve of the Civil War slaves represented 55 percent of the state's total population.
(12) Mississippi's ordinance of secession officially took them out of the union in 1861 leading up to
the Civil War. (32) The Civil War began in 1861 and left many white Mississippians in permanent
mourning for lost loved ones. (3) The war hit close to home due to volunteer companies recruiting
locally. Almost everyone knew someone fighting within the war. (41) As of 1861, the blood of
Mississippians had not been spilled on Mississippi soil; however, that was about to be altered. (57)

Confederate Army Morality
The Confederate Army Moral over matter? The Civil War was a fight to the death on the principle of
setting another man free. It was a brutal for year battle, Union VS Confederacy, Yankees VS Rebels,
pledging their last measure. The Civil War is one of the most famous wars in the world. Most Civil
War information focuses on the victors, the Union/Yankees. The cause of this war began with the
Compromise of 1850 which tried to maintain political balance between free and slave states in
Congress. However, the election of 1860 was the final straw, causing the separation of the northern
and southern states. The southern states seceded because they feared Abraham Lincoln, now
president, would abolish slavery thus causing the Civil War. The Civil War began in 1861 at Fort
Sumter and ended when General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse in 1865.
While the Confederacy had undeniably talented generals, their well known arrogance may have
been the cause of their demise.

Confederate States Decided To Secede Essay
The Confederate States decided to secede from the United States in 1860 starting with South
Carolina and was followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama. Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas about 2
months later in 1861. The South justified seceding from the Union because the Northern states were
failing to do what was required of them, some states were elevating free blacks and using their votes
to support anti–slavery policies, and the Republican Party was planning to wage war on slavery
upon taking office. One of the reasons the South believed they were justified in seceding from the
Union is because the Northern states were failing to return fugitive or runaway slave back to where
they came from. It says in the constitution that if a slave runs to another state to escape work then
that state is to return them back to the state they ran away from. In the Texas State Legislature, A
Declaration of Causes Which Impel the State of Texas to Secede from the Federal Union", written in
1861, states "by solemn legislative enactments, have deliberately, directly or indirectly violated the

Essay On The Battle Of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most important battles, if not the most important battle from
the Civil War. The Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 between the Union and the Confederate
States of America. The Union was mainly made up of Northern states while the Confederate States
of America was mainly Southern states who had seceded from the nation. The Battle of Gettysburg
took place right in the middle of war in 1863, and was one of the bloodiest ever. The battle took
place in the 3rd year of the war, during the beginning of July on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd . The war
would continue for another 2 years and eventually, the Union would end up winning. The Battle of
Gettysburg was a major turning point in the war because of the amount of casualties that the armies
suffered, and since it was a major win and morale boost for the Union army.
To begin with, the Battle Gettysburg was one of the most brutal and bloody battles in the war. The
amount of casualties that both sides suffered was unreal and insanely high. These casualties cost
both armies a big chunk of men for the armies but it hurt the Confederate army more. In Document
B it states the total casualties for the Union army was 23,040 which was 27% of their army, while
for the Confederate army it was between 20,650 and 25,000 men which was 30–34% of their army
at Gettysburg. The Confederate army lost almost one–third of their army which attended Gettysburg
and this would turn out to have serious consequences for them. The Union army also lost a lot of
men, but it wasn't an as big percent of their army. Furthermore, in map B it compares the Gettysburg
casualties to the overall troops and men avalaible for both armies. It states the casualties for the
Union army which was 23,040 compared to the total size of the army, which was 918,000 and title
men of military age which was 6 million. The casualties at the Battle of Gettysburg, don't seem as
bad and it doesn't seem like its an as big chunk of the army. The Confederate Army on the other
hand suffered major losses. The total size of their army on December, 1863 was 278,000 and that
total men of military age was only 1.2 million. The Union had a little under 650,000 more troops

The Civil War, America 's Bloodiest Conflict, By Robert E....
The Civil War, America's bloodiest conflict, was lost not by Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson or
Joseph Johnston. It was lost by a man named Christopher Memminger, the first Treasury Secretary
of the Confederate States. Mismanagement of Southern economy was a signal that the South was
doomed from the beginning. Money drives every aspect of life, and every aspect of politics. From
fundamental beliefs about taxation to everyday life being made impossible by inflation, the Southern
economic policy seemed designed to do as much harm to the Confederate States as possible. The
Southern economic policy demonstrated that a war can be lost in the wallets and treasuries as easily
as it can be lost on the battlefield. The foundations of the Southern tax policy were a clear statement
on the South's beliefs in a small government. A small government meant a small treasury and not
much support from a central government. In Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephen's
"Cornerstone" speech, he highlighted the successes of state's being independent from contributing to
a common treasury when he commented on the construction of infrastructure in the South by saying
"What justice was there in taking this money, which our people paid into the common treasury on
the importation of our iron, and applying it to the improvement of rivers and harbors elsewhere?" A
weak central government was the intention of the Confederate's founding fathers when constructing
their nation, and that

Even after the first steps toward secession had been taken, he tried to keep the Southern states in the

On February 18, 1861, the provisional Congress of the Confederate States made him provisional
president. He was elected to the office by popular vote the same year for a 6–year term and was
inaugurated in Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederacy, on February 22, 1862. Davis
failed to raise sufficient money to fight the American Civil War and could not obtain recognition and
help for the Confederacy from foreign governments. He was in constant conflict with extreme
exponents of the doctrine of states' rights, and his attempts to have high military officers appointed
by the president were opposed by the governors of the states. The judges of state courts constantly
interfered in military matters through judicial decisions. Davis was nevertheless responsible for the
raising of the formidable Confederate armies, the notable appointment of General Robert E. Lee as
commander of the Army of Virginia, and the encouragement of industrial enterprise throughout the
South. His zeal, energy, and faith in the cause of the South were a source of much of the tenacity
with which the Confederacy fought the Civil War. Even in 1865 Davis still hoped the South would

The Battle Of The Civil War
America formed the United States through a revolution, which took place in the year 1776–83.
However, this unity was first shaken by the Civil War because some states wanted to separate
themselves from this unity that had lasted for approximately 100 years. The American Civil War is a
historic affair and one of the bloodiest battles in history of the US (Engle, & Krick, 2003). It is
considered one of the bloodstained happenings in the history of the US because more than 600, 000
people died. A majority of this number were soldiers. This fatal battle happened between the years
1861 to 1865.
The Civil War emerged because of several reasons. The causes of the civil war remain very
argumentative and it is always seen as a complex issue because many people have several reasons
why the war began. The difference of opinions between states in regard to slavery was major
concern and the reason why the battle began (Engle, & Krick, 2003). In 1850s, slavery was the
reason of a huge political tension. In the Northern, the Republican Party worked hard to end the era
of slavery. However, Southern had threatened a succession in case Abraham Lincoln would win the
fourth coming election. During the campaigns, Lincoln had promised that he would bring an end to
slavery and because of such promises; the Southern did not support him (McPherson, 2013). Despite
the division and lack of support from one end, Abraham Lincoln won the election. The tension rose
high because people from the

"Don't kneel to me. You must kneel to God only, and thank him for the liberty you will enjoy

Richmond in 1865. Although there are several different questions of why the North won the Civil
War, factors involving manpower, economy, military tactics and leadership, and presidential
leadership, are all parts of a puzzle historians have tried to put together for years. I believe that these
four factors should prove to be the most powerful reasons for the Union's destruction of the

Furthermore, drafting of Southern slaves robbed cotton farms and industries of male work. In
opposition to burning the cotton, the Vice– President of the Confederacy, Alexander H. Stephens,
proposed to gain profit by selling cotton in Europe, but by the time the idea had actually fallen into
place the Northern blockade had already become too tight. Currrent explains that "Not until
the third year of the war, however, did the government take complete control of cotton exports and
push them with determination. If this program had been taken earlier, probably Confederate finances
could have been made much stronger then they became" (Current 27). Fortunately for the
North it was much too late for this experiment to show any signs of its success.

The Confederate States of America (a.k.a. the Confederacy, the Confederate States, or CSA) were
the eleven southern states of the United States of America that withdrew from the Union somewhere
between 1861 and 1865. Seven states proclaimed their autonomy from the United States before
Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as president; four more did as such after the American Civil War
started with the Battle of Fort Sumter, when the CSA assaulted the U.S. The United States ("The
Union") held withdrawal unlawful and rejected acknowledgment of the Confederacy. Albeit no
European controls authoritatively perceived the CSA, British commerce sold it warships and
operated blockade runners to help supply it.

Shockingly for Davis, these credits were insufficient to triumph over the brutal difficulties postured
by his new position. His initial ubiquity was an aftereffect of war intensity and he didn 't have the
identity important to support it. He was impatient with individuals who couldn 't help disagreeing
him, and he had the deplorable propensity for awarding prominent posts to leaders who seemed
unsuccessful.
Texas joined the Confederate States of America on March 2, and afterward supplanted its
representative, Sam Houston, when he declined to take an oath to the Confederate States of
America. These seven states withdrew from the United States and took control of military/maritime
establishments, ports, and custom houses inside their limits, setting off the American Civil War.
A month after the Confederate States of America was established, on March 4, 1861, Abraham
Lincoln was sworn in as President of the United States. In his inaugural address, he contended that
the Constitution was a "more impeccable union" than the prior Articles of Confederation and
Perpetual Union, that it was a binding contract, and called the withdrawal "lawfully void." The
legitimate issue of whether the Constitution is a binding contract has seldom been tended to by
scholars, and still today is a fervently idea. He expressed he had no goal to attack Southern states,

When it became apparent to the Confederate leaders that mountaineers were deserting the
Confederate Army in large numbers, laws were passed that would punish deserters and their

recently passed laws. Once word got out the deserters were being hunted down and punished, the
bond between most mountaineers began to thicken. They would hide each other's men during the
day so that Confederate soldiers couldn't find them. Then come nightfall the soldiers would continue
their journeys home. Resentment for mountaineers soon grew and punishments for deserters were
soon executed on the spot without the written authorization of the proper military powers.
Punishments included on the spot execution, extreme beating and torture, robbing their houses,

Critical Reasoning And Battle Analysis Of Fort Wagner
Critical Reasoning and Battle Analysis of Fort Wagner The purpose of this narrative is to detail the
battle of Fort Wagner during the Civil War. This focus explains the defeat of Union forces and how
the implementation of intelligence assets may have resulted in Union victory. The use of
reconnaissance and scout assets by Union forces would have resulted in the success of the Union
Army at Fort Wagner. Fort Wagner was a key stronghold for Confederate forces, securing the
Charleston Harbor and protecting passage to the Rebel birthplace and Confederate capital of
Charleston, South Carolina. Union regiments stormed the beaches of Morris Island on 10 July 1863
with the intention of assuming control over Fort Wagner. The Confederate forces fortified the camp
with artillery and mortars, thwarting the Union Regiments' advances. The use of intelligence assets
would have revealed the Confederate Army's disposition, allowing the Union Army to refine their

Slavery and the American Civil War Essay
Slavery "War is at best barbarism....Its glory is all moonshine....War is hell. (Union General William

four years (1862–1865) a war was fought between both Northern Union states and Southern
Confederate states over the matter of slavery. During this time period many changes were happening
in the United States; the election of an anti–slavery president, Southern states trying to secede to

The thought that Confederates were the only who owned slaves is a common misconception;
actually both sides had owned slaves. The North did not completely disagree with slavery but the
fact that Southern states were trying to create their own laws and secede. This had angered both
sides leading to the Civil War. During war time both side realized that they couldn't not win without
drilling the men; teaching them how to shoot, and disciplining them. A group of drummers was the
key importance to the infantry; they would play a beat which let their soldiers know whether to
attack or retreat. This was a huge importance due to both sides constantly firing their weapons at
each other, it allowed for a distinct noise to be heard rather than a yell of 'Charge!" Back on the
home front women had to take charge as the male role in the house, since the men were at war
fighting. This allowed for women to actually have a voice in history rather than being pushed off to
the sideline. Women of this time period started taking interest in to men games, such as dominoes,
card games, and gambiling. During soldiers down time they were either resting or recovering
waiting for the next battle to commence. In The Civil War there were four main and important

these symbols need to be abolished as they are offensive to a significant number of Americans.
Though there might be many secondary reasons for the creation of the CSA and the start of the Civil
War, the primary reason was for the "right" of white people to enslave black people. The symbols

The Confederate Flag As A Symbol Of American History

 • 1. The Confederate Flag As A Symbol Of American History The Confederate Flag Recently there has been a big debate over the nation for the flying confederate flag.Is the confederate flag a true symbol of "Heritage or Hate"? Many states in America's south had the confederate flag as a part of their state flag, but this has been changed over the past few months. The confederate flag has been known and flown for many battles over the past century and a half, which was ever since thebeginning of the Civil War in 1861. Some people today see this flag as a symbol of hatred and are willing to get rid of it by taking it down. On the other hand, some people see this flag as a symbol of American history and want to keep this flag flying for heritage. The real question is who is right and why? On July 10th, 2015 the confederate flag was finally taken down, along with the pole it flew on.After one hundred and fifty–four years this flag will forever be gone. Many people were happy and glad to see the confederate flag go because it has lately been seen as a symbol of hate.On June 17th, there was a shooting massacre in Charleston, South Carolina that was related to the confederate flag. This was all the more reason to take down the flag and to keep people from egging on hatred toward African–American people. On July 8th, 2015 a debate was held to see if the people wanted the flag to stay flying or to be taken down. "By 6:30 p.m.,the chamber was engaged in an extended debate over a Pitts amendment that would remove the battle flag and substitute ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 3. The Battle Of The Civil War Authors: Teni Adebayo– Blue Michael Mikhaiel–Red There were many major events that occurred in the state of Texas, but none of them were as disastrous as the ones that happened in the Civil War. The Civil War was the war with the most American deaths. Many battles happened in Texas, but in the Civil War there were many significant battles that took place in Texas. The first battle of the Civil war that was fought on Texas soil was the Battle of Sabine Pass. This battle was another attempt by the Union to get part of Texas from the Confederacy. The reason why the Union was trying to take part of Texas ,and the states southern of the Mississippi river back to the union, was because of the cotton they produced. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another victory for the Confederacy. On July 1861 the Union Navy began another blockade at Galveston Harbor. The union sent Harriet Lane flying a flag of truce. This meant if they did not surrender they would attack them. Four of the Union 's steamers entered and went straight to where Harriet Lane was. The Confederates saw this and started shooting at the Union. The U.S. Navy answered back with guns. Finally the Union disabled one of the confederate 's guns at Fort Point, then went for the other two. Two Rebel guns started firing on Union ships. The boat that Col. Cook had sent now approached the Union ships and two of the Confederate officers boarded the U.S.S Westfield. Renshaw demanded a surrender of Galveston or he would start shelling. Col. Cook refused Renshaw 's terms, and Renshaw threatened to start shelling and made plans for towing the mortar boat into position. One of the major Confederate officers wanted to talk to col. Cook, because Commander Renshaw and him made a truce that will last for four days to make sure all the women, children, and Aliens out of the city. Cook allowed this but added if Renshaw moved his troop any closer that Cook would let his troops go south. Since this truce wasn 't written down it caused problems later. The Confederates did indeed evacuate, taking everything they had including their weapons, ammunition, supplies and whatever else they could carry. Renshaw did not think that ... • 5. The Battle Of The American Civil War The American Civil War was fought from April 12th 1861 to May 9th 1865 to mark the bloodiest clash in American history. The civil war started as a result of differences between the free and slave states over the authority of the national government to outlaw slavery in the Southern states. The economy of the northern states had modernized and industrialization had taken root. They had invested heavily in their transport system, financial industries and communications network. The Southern economy produced cotton in large scale and relied slave labor. There was need to expand their economic empire and outlawing slavery could be detrimental to its progress. When Abraham Lincoln the candidate of antislavery Republican Party won the presidential election in 1860, the southern states seceded organizing as the Confederates States of America. On April 12, 1861, they opened fire on Fort Sumter at South Carolina. Lincoln called militia to suppress the rebels. Four more states joined the rebels and by the end of 1861, several battles had taken place. (Nicholas Greenwood Onuf, 2006) In 1861, military actions began in Virginia where non slave holding pro– Union Virginians sought to secede from the Confederacy. McClellan in command of federal forces in southern Ohio encountered small forces sent by Lee and won three significant battles. His victories helped toward elimination of Confederate resistance in northwestern Virginia which had refused to recognize secession. On May 6, Lee ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 7. The Battle Of Bull Run. The American Civil War Was Fought The Battle of Bull Run The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine whether the Union or Confederacy would survive. The fight would take place between the North, called Union states and the South, called Confederate states. The Confederate states wanted to leave the North and South union and stand on their own. The war started on April 12, 1861 when Confederate forces attacked a Union military base at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The reason the war started at this time was that Abraham Lincoln had just been elected President in 1860. Abraham Lincoln wanted to end slavery but keep the union together. The North had an increase of industry and the South still depended on farming the land. However, the South ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The battle was also known as the Battle of First Manassas. This was the first major battle of the Civil War. Even though the Union Army outnumbered the Confederate Army, the experience of the Confederate Army made the difference and they won that battle. The Confederate reinforcements had time to arrive by railroad because the Union 's forces were slow positioning themselves. Even though the Union and Confederate sides had about 18,000 troops in their first battle, they were not trained and they were led poorly. The outcome of this battle was a Confederate victory. The Union forces suffered a disorganized retreat of their troops. Union troops marched from the Federal capital in Washington, D.C. to strike a Confederate force along a small river known as Bull Run. After fighting on the defensive for most of the day, the rebels rallied and were able to break the Union right flank, sending them into a chaotic retreat towards Washington. The Confederate victory gave the South a false confidence and shocked many in the North, who realized the war would not be won as easily as they had hoped. By July 1861, the northern press and the public were eager for the Union Army to make an advance on Richmond, ahead of the planned meeting of the Confederate Congress there on July 20, 1861. Encouraged by early victories of Union troops in western Virginia, and by the war fever spreading through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 9. The War between the States The Civil War also known as the War Between the States was a war fought from 1861 to 1865. The war was fought in the United States after seven Southern slave sates declared their separation to form the Confederate States of America. The Southern states were known as the Confederacy. But, the states that remained which were the Northern States were called the Union. The War was the deadliest war in American history; it killed approximately 620,000 soldiers. The soldiers died from combat, accidents, starvation, and diseases. The Southern States declared secession because they did not want to get rid of slavery. However, the Northern States and Abraham Lincoln had abolished slavery and were completely against it. This made the Southern states upset; it became the major cause of The Civil War. On April 12, 1861, the deadliest was begun, shots were fired. The Confederate soldiers attacked the Union's Fort Sumter in South Carolina. General Beauregard sent Major Anderson a message an hour before the attack saying he would fire if Anderson and his soldiers didn't surrender. An hour passed and Anderson did not surrender so the firing began. Major Anderson and 68 of his soldiers were inside the fort when the attack began. A couple months prior Anderson moved his troops from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter, because he thought Fort Sumter was more protected. Fort Sumter had been the only fort in South Carolina that was not seized. On the day of the attack when the Confederate opened fire, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 11. Slavery And The Civil War Abraham Lincoln once said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." In the 1800s, the American nation was slowly becoming a house divided against itself. The United States were no longer united, mainly over the issue of slavery. In fact, many historians believe that, "From the nation's founding, the issue of slavery threatened to tear the United States apart." ("The Civil War" 1). The issue of slavery was always kept at bay through the utilization of various compromises; however a permanent solution was never sought after by the government. The peoples' perspective of slavery differed by region. In the South, the economy was extremely reliant on farming and agriculture. These areas required slave labor, so Southerners favored slavery. However, in the North, many people were pro–abolition and called for the end of slavery ("Slavery: Three Points of View" 2). These varying ideals about slavery ultimately lead to the start of the Civil War. When Lincoln, the Republican, pro–abolition candidate, won the Election of 1860, Southern states began to secede from the United States. Within 6 months of Lincoln's election, the Confederate States of America had been created ("The Civil War" 1). The Confederacy despised the principles of the North, or the Union, and was ready to go to war in order to settle their differences. This war would forever change life in America and even break down society's barriers between the races. In short, key battles and the abolition of slavery are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 13. The Civil War : The Greatest And Most Catastrophic War Essay The Civil War is an essential event in America 's history. The Civil War determined what kind of nation the United States would be. Would it be a breakable confederation of absolute states or an indivisible nation with an absolute national government ? Northern victory of the war protected the United States as one nation and ended the foundation of slavery which had separated the country initially. However, those results came at the value of many lives.Nearly 625,000 American soldiers lives were lost in all the wars combined. The Civil War was the greatest and most catastrophic battle in the Western world. It was caused because of stubborn differences between free and slave states over the government on whether or not to prohibit slavery amongst territories that were not yet states. Once President Abraham Lincoln was elected and pledged to prevent slavery in those territories , seven slave states withdrew and formed a new nation called the Confederate States of America. Abraham Lincoln's administration refused to recognize the authority of secession. They worried it would destroy the democracy. The event that caused the war was the Battle of Fort Sumter. To begin with, Fort Sumter is located in South Carolina. It is the main point of where the Civil War started. The first shots were fired here. Fort Sumter was built after the War of 1812 to reassure the defense of its southern harbors. After South Carolina withdrew from the Union, Union forces inhabited the unfinished Fort ... • 15. Communist Leader Joseph Stalin : The Death Of One Man Communist leader Joseph Stalin once promulgated "The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic." Attesting to the manner in which war assimilates the mind into accepting death, Stalin's words came to fruition in the minds of leaders during the American Civil War, a four year strife over sectionalism. While both sides suffered heavy losses, the Union was ultimately able to defeat the Confederates States of America in 1865 after the Confederates surrendered. Nonetheless, such defeat could have been avoided in the case that the South held true to their values and exhibited the resilience which many believed characterized the South. All in all, the Civil War could have become a victory for the Confederate States of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, there is much to ask in regard to the question, "How did the South lose, when one takes into considerations their numerous advantages?" Foremost the North, also referred to as the Union, had their advantages in facets such as leadership, industry, etc. Therefore, they were secure logistically, and strategically. Hence, when likened to Sun Tzu's proclamations, the Confederate's enemy, the Union, were "[...] secure at all points." While the South was superior in some regards, neither side was substantially dominant in comparison to the opposition. Initially, the South had decided on a defensive strategy which seemed conducive to success when taking into consideration the state of firearm technology at the time. In John Cook's address titled "Could the South have Won the War," he states "STRATEGY 1 – Davis 1 or "Cordon Defence" Strategy: This strategy was used for much of the first year of the War and involved positioning troops around the whole of the periphery of the Confederacy in an attempt to defend all of its territory, [...] In the wake of these Federal incursions, the South abandoned their efforts to hold all of their territory." (Cook 4) Such sentiments affirm the South's initial defensive strategy, which was viewed as an unequivocal strategy for the South to use. • 17. The End Of The American Civil War "The US Civil War was incontrovertibly the bloodiest, most devastating conflict in American history, and it remains unknown – and unknowable – exactly how many men died in Union and Confederate uniform" (Nasaw, 2012). At the end of the American Civil War, in 1865 slavery was abolished, the military was greatly enhanced, and the great nation of America became whole again with the North and South being brought together. In the mid 19th century, the United States of America was experiencing an era of growth. The only problem was the North and South had an economical difference. The North established manufacturing and industry. While the South's economy was based on large–scaled farming, which relied on the labor of African American slaves to grow and harvest certain crops. Tobacco and cotton were the main crops that was grown. After the abolishment of the slaves in the North, the South felt like they were going to have to remove the slaves also. They feared this because the people of the South knew that the economy was going to fall tremendously. The abolishment of the slaves had spread westward and this is when the South became concerned even more. "In 1854 the Kansas–Nebraska Act overturned the Missouri Compromise's use of latitude as the boundary between slave and free territory and instead, using the principle of popular sovereignty, decreed that the residents would determine whether the area became a free state or a slave state" (Foner & Garraty, 1991). • 19. The Battle Of The Confederacy In some ways the confederacy is more alive and active today than it was in the 1860s. Arguments over its symbols, its flags, its leaders, its memorials, and its legacy have been almost constant over the past several years. These battles are always about one thing, the meaning of the confederacy. This usually devolves into an "it's about slavery, it's about states' rights" argument with neither side listening to the other, each side convinced that it is right. Nevertheless, the question remains: what did it mean to be a confederate during the Civil War? The men, women, and children who consider themselves confederates during the 1860s created a nation, believed so strongly that they fought and died to defend it, and then saw that nation disappear into nothing. How do you reconcile that lost? How do you justify the pain and suffering that your family endured for it all to be in vain? You do it through myth and legend; you do it with the hope that the idea of the confederacy lives on even though the nation itself does not, and in that regard it succeeded. The ideal and myth of the confederacy not only outlasted the confederacy itself, but transcended into the very essence of American culture as the Lost Cause. The idea of the Lost Cause strives to show the war from the perspective of south, in the best possible light. Developed by white southerners in a postwar climate of economic, racial, and political uncertainty, the Lost Cause seeks to create a romanticized version ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Confederate States Of America Research Paper The Confederate States of America Concerning the Confederate States of America, Representative Corrine Brown stated, "Southern states in the Confederacy were not ready to give up their fight to secede or give up their way of life, which was made possible in large part by the blood, sweat, and tears of African slaves." The Confederate States of America was a group of eleven states that seceded from the Union as a result of conflicting opinions of what a state's rights were. The Confederacy was characterized by three major events, its formation, its part in the Civil War, and Reconstruction of the South following the war. When Congress passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867, what was once the Confederacy was divided into five military districts with an officer over each of them. If a state wanted to be readmitted, it had to ratify the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments, making slavery illegal and freed slaves, or freedmen, citizens of the United States (Grussendorf, 224). During the election of 1877, there was a dispute over the electoral votes. The Democrats agreed to allow the Republican candidate Rutherford B. With what became known as the Compromise of 1877, Hayes would become the president; but all troops must be removed from the South; Hayes must appoint at least one Southerner to his Cabinet; and federal money must be given to help the South's economy recover from the turmoil of Reconstruction. About 150 years ago, a proud and noble culture was created in the Southern portion of the United States. It was created by Southerners from all walks of life, ranging from the gentry to the "good ol' boys." They loved their culture so much that they created a country. It was a country of blue skies, green hills, beautiful meadows and forests, and old–fashioned Southern hospitality. There were large plantations that grew some of the finest crops in the world. • 27. The Civil War And The Confederate States Of America Essay The American Civil War is a civil war between 1861 and 1865 involving the United States or ("the Union") and the Confederate States of America ("the Confederacy"), led by Jefferson Davis, consisting of eleven southern slave states that had seceded from the United States. The Union included all abolitionist states and five "borderline" slave states and was headed by Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party. The latter was opposed to the expansion of slavery in the territories held by the United States, and his victory in the presidential election of 1860 led to the first secession of seven southern states, even before Lincoln took office. For four years, Southerners or Confederates, commanded by Beauregard, Jackson, and Lee fought the Northerners or Federals, commanded by Scott McClellan, Burnside, Sherman, and Grant, in a series of deadly battles, where the successes and setbacks swayed between the protagonists. The cause of the war The Civil War was the culmination of a social, political, philosophical and economic crisis that began at the birth of the United States. The question of slavery had not ceased dividing the country since its foundation. In the 1850s, the question of the abolition of slavery became more and more important Discussions in the Congress and the press between the opponents and the defenders of slavery were ardent than ever. However, it is believed that one battle determined the outcome of this War. If this battle had gone another way, the United States that we know today would not exist as it is. This is the battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg represents a vital turning point during the Civil War because it was the battle with most casualties in the United States, it restored the faith of the Union Army and the confederates never gained back the offensive position resulting in the Union Army gaining the victory of this war. This continued for two hours but Meade ordered to not fire back, so the Confederates started to advance toward the Union, believing that they were retreating. But when the Confederates were on eyesight, the Union attacked. This ended the battle because it caught the Confederate army by surprise. Meade felt that there was no possible way to express how well his army had done in this battle and how hard they had fought. If McClellan had defied Allan Pinkerton's human intelligence information claiming the Confederacy consisted of 120,000 soldiers, he could have defeated Lee prior to the battle of Antietam (Cannon, 1994). Lee relied heavily on J.E.B. Stuart's scout unit for reconnaissance missions to gather intelligence on the enemy's position and troop strength (Cannon, 1994). On September 17, 1862, the Union army attacked the Confederacy, with Union soldiers outnumbering Confederate soldiers 87,000 to 35,000 (Davis, 1999). Lee knew he was outnumbered, so he ordered Jackson's two divisions to support Hood's command on the Union left flank, while Walker supported the right (Cannon, 1994). McClellan's battle plan consisted of simultaneous attacks from the left and right side, with a final attack to the Confederate center. Union Regiment commander Major General Brunside was late in initiating his attack, which threw off McClellan's entire battle plan. The Confederate forces managed to stabilize their positon, while McClellan reassessed his position. He sent troops to attack the center of the Confederate army, despite staggering small arms fire (Stevens, 1994). The Fluidity of the American Civil War The American Civil War, widely known in the United States as simply the Civil War as well as other sectional names, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union or independence for the Confederacy. Among the 34 states in January 1861, seven Southern slave states individually declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. Slavery was the central source of escalating political tension in the 1850s. The Republican Party was determined to prevent any spread of slavery, and many Southern leaders had threatened secession if the Republican candidate, Lincoln, won the 1860 election. After Lincoln had won without carrying a single Southern state, many Southern whites felt that disunion had become their only option, because they thought that they were losing representation, which would hamper their ability to promote pro–slavery acts and policies. Root causes Slavery. Contemporary actors, the Union and Confederate leadership and fighting soldiers on both sides believed that slavery caused the Civil War. Union men mainly believed the war was to emancipate the slaves. Confederates fought to protect southern society, and slavery as an integral part of it. From the anti–slavery perspective, the issue was primarily about whether the system of slavery was an anachronistic evil that was incompatible with Republicanism in the United States. The strategy of the anti–slavery forces was containment – to stop the expansion and thus put slavery on a path to gradual extinction. The slave–holding interests in the South denounced this strategy as infringing upon their Constitutional rights. • 45. Kentucky 's Role During The Civil War Kentucky's Role during the Civil War The world has faced the dangers of war almost since the beginnings of time, and America in the mid–1800's was no different. Despite the Union having won its freedom from England during the Revolutionary War less than a century before, problems were brewing internally within the young and rapidly expanding country. As slavery boomed in the southern states, the North grew less and less content with this state of affairs. It is said that "to southern whites, the Republican victory in 1860 presented an immediate danger to the slave–owning republic that had existed since 1776" (Henretta, 2012, p. 418). Southerners were not ready to lose one of their most valuable commodities, slaves, which they feared would happen under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, although he promised "to safeguard slavery where it existed but vowed to prevent its expansion" (Henretta, 2012, p. 420). Unheeding of Lincoln's vows, and hoping to preserve the individual state's rights, "radical southerners chose the dangerous enterprise of secession" (Henretta, 2012, p. 418). This secession began first in the state of South Carolina, when on December 20, 1860 a unanimous vote was taken " to dissolve 'the union now subsisting between South Carolina and the other states'" (Henretta, 2012, p.418). This idea of secession spread quickly to the surrounding southern states, resulting in five other states declaring secession within the month. At a meeting of the seceding ... The crisis began as a dispute between the state of South Carolina and the federal government over a series of national tariffs that many of the southerners viewed as excessive. (6) The leader of the nullification movement in Mississippi was John Anthony Quitman. Quitman died in 1859 and Mississippi finally left the Union in 1861. (8) As a result of the Nullification crisis, the Mexican War took place. Many Mississippians volunteered to fight with much enthusiasm. After nearly two years of war, America won. It was a brutal for year battle, Union VS Confederacy, Yankees VS Rebels, pledging their last measure. The Civil War is one of the most famous wars in the world. Most Civil War information focuses on the victors, the Union/Yankees. The cause of this war began with the Compromise of 1850 which tried to maintain political balance between free and slave states in Congress. However, the election of 1860 was the final straw, causing the separation of the northern and southern states. The southern states seceded because they feared Abraham Lincoln, now president, would abolish slavery thus causing the Civil War. Confederate States Decided To Secede Essay The Confederate States decided to secede from the United States in 1860 starting with South Carolina and was followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama. Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas about 2 months later in 1861. The South justified seceding from the Union because the Northern states were failing to do what was required of them, some states were elevating free blacks and using their votes to support anti–slavery policies, and the Republican Party was planning to wage war on slavery upon taking office. One of the reasons the South believed they were justified in seceding from the Union is because the Northern states were failing to return fugitive or runaway slave back to where they came from. It says in the constitution that if a slave runs to another state to escape work then that state is to return them back to the state they ran away from. The Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 between the Union and the Confederate States of America. The Union was mainly made up of Northern states while the Confederate States of America was mainly Southern states who had seceded from the nation. The Battle of Gettysburg took place right in the middle of war in 1863, and was one of the bloodiest ever. The battle took place in the 3rd year of the war, during the beginning of July on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd . The war would continue for another 2 years and eventually, the Union would end up winning. The Battle of Gettysburg was a major turning point in the war because of the amount of casualties that the armies suffered, and since it was a major win and morale boost for the Union army. To begin with, the Battle Gettysburg was one of the most brutal and bloody battles in the war. The amount of casualties that both sides suffered was unreal and insanely high. These casualties cost both armies a big chunk of men for the armies but it hurt the Confederate army more. In Document B it states the total casualties for the Union army was 23,040 which was 27% of their army, while for the Confederate army it was between 20,650 and 25,000 men which was 30–34% of their army at Gettysburg. The Confederate army lost almost one–third of their army which attended Gettysburg and this would turn out to have serious consequences for them. The Union army also lost a lot of men, but it wasn't an as big percent of their army. Furthermore, in map B it compares the Gettysburg casualties to the overall troops and men avalaible for both armies. It states the casualties for the Union army which was 23,040 compared to the total size of the army, which was 918,000 and title men of military age which was 6 million. The casualties at the Battle of Gettysburg, don't seem as bad and it doesn't seem like its an as big chunk of the army. The Confederate Army on the other hand suffered major losses. The total size of their army on December, 1863 was 278,000 and that total men of military age was only 1.2 million. The Union had a little under 650,000 more troops than the Confederate ... • 59. The Civil War, America 's Bloodiest Conflict, By Robert E.... The Civil War, America's bloodiest conflict, was lost not by Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson or Joseph Johnston. It was lost by a man named Christopher Memminger, the first Treasury Secretary of the Confederate States. Mismanagement of Southern economy was a signal that the South was doomed from the beginning. Money drives every aspect of life, and every aspect of politics. From fundamental beliefs about taxation to everyday life being made impossible by inflation, the Southern economic policy seemed designed to do as much harm to the Confederate States as possible. The Southern economic policy demonstrated that a war can be lost in the wallets and treasuries as easily as it can be lost on the battlefield. The foundations of the Southern tax policy were a clear statement on the South's beliefs in a small government. A small government meant a small treasury and not much support from a central government. In Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephen's "Cornerstone" speech, he highlighted the successes of state's being independent from contributing to a common treasury when he commented on the construction of infrastructure in the South by saying "What justice was there in taking this money, which our people paid into the common treasury on the importation of our iron, and applying it to the improvement of rivers and harbors elsewhere?" A weak central government was the intention of the Confederate's founding fathers when constructing their nation, and that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Immediately after confirmation of the election of Abraham Lincoln as president, the legislature of South Carolina convened. In a unanimous vote on December 20, 1860, the state seceded from the Union. During the next two months ordinances of secession were adopted by the states of Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Even after the first steps toward secession had been taken, he tried to keep the Southern states in the Union, although not at the expense of their principles. When the state of Mississippi seceded, he withdrew from the Senate. On February 18, 1861, the provisional Congress of the Confederate States made him provisional president. He was elected to the office by popular vote the same year for a 6–year term and was inaugurated in Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederacy, on February 22, 1862. Davis failed to raise sufficient money to fight the American Civil War and could not obtain recognition and help for the Confederacy from foreign governments. He was in constant conflict with extreme exponents of the doctrine of states' rights, and his attempts to have high military officers appointed by the president were opposed by the governors of the states. The judges of state courts constantly interfered in military matters through judicial decisions. Davis was nevertheless responsible for the raising of the formidable Confederate armies, the notable appointment of General Robert E. Lee as commander of the Army of Virginia, and the encouragement of industrial enterprise throughout the South. His zeal, energy, and faith in the cause of the South were a source of much of the tenacity with which the Confederacy fought the Civil War. Even in 1865 Davis still hoped the South would be able to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 63. The Battle Of The Civil War America formed the United States through a revolution, which took place in the year 1776–83. However, this unity was first shaken by the Civil War because some states wanted to separate themselves from this unity that had lasted for approximately 100 years. The American Civil War is a historic affair and one of the bloodiest battles in history of the US (Engle, & Krick, 2003). It is considered one of the bloodstained happenings in the history of the US because more than 600, 000 people died. A majority of this number were soldiers. This fatal battle happened between the years 1861 to 1865. The Civil War emerged because of several reasons. The causes of the civil war remain very argumentative and it is always seen as a complex issue because many people have several reasons why the war began. The difference of opinions between states in regard to slavery was major concern and the reason why the battle began (Engle, & Krick, 2003). In 1850s, slavery was the reason of a huge political tension. In the Northern, the Republican Party worked hard to end the era of slavery. However, Southern had threatened a succession in case Abraham Lincoln would win the fourth coming election. During the campaigns, Lincoln had promised that he would bring an end to slavery and because of such promises; the Southern did not support him (McPherson, 2013). Despite the division and lack of support from one end, Abraham Lincoln won the election. The tension rose high because people from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 65. Essay on Confederate States Of America "Don't kneel to me. You must kneel to God only, and thank him for the liberty you will enjoy hereafter" (Brinkley 414). President Abraham Lincoln spoke these words to a former slave that kneeled before him while walking the streets of the abandoned Confederate capitol of Richmond in 1865. Although there are several different questions of why the North won the Civil War, factors involving manpower, economy, military tactics and leadership, and presidential leadership, are all parts of a puzzle historians have tried to put together for years. I believe that these four factors should prove to be the most powerful reasons for the Union's destruction of the Confederate States of America. The presidential leadership of Lincoln will be ... In opposition to burning the cotton, the Vice– President of the Confederacy, Alexander H. Stephens, proposed to gain profit by selling cotton in Europe, but by the time the idea had actually fallen into place the Northern blockade had already become too tight. Currrent explains that "Not until the third year of the war, however, did the government take complete control of cotton exports and push them with determination. If this program had been taken earlier, probably Confederate finances could have been made much stronger then they became" (Current 27). Fortunately for the North it was much too late for this experiment to show any signs of its success. Between the North and the South, the North simply had the upper hand when it came to raising revenue for the war. "Of the Confederacy's income, to October 1864, almost 60 per cent was derived from the issue of paper money, about 30 per cent from the sale of bonds, and less than 5 per cent from taxation (the remaining 5 per cent arising from miscellaneous sources). • 67. The Confederate States Of America The Confederate States of America (a.k.a. the Confederacy, the Confederate States, or CSA) were the eleven southern states of the United States of America that withdrew from the Union somewhere between 1861 and 1865. Seven states proclaimed their autonomy from the United States before Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as president; four more did as such after the American Civil War started with the Battle of Fort Sumter, when the CSA assaulted the U.S. The United States ("The Union") held withdrawal unlawful and rejected acknowledgment of the Confederacy. Albeit no European controls authoritatively perceived the CSA, British commerce sold it warships and operated blockade runners to help supply it. Following Abraham Lincoln 's election as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shockingly for Davis, these credits were insufficient to triumph over the brutal difficulties postured by his new position. His initial ubiquity was an aftereffect of war intensity and he didn 't have the identity important to support it. He was impatient with individuals who couldn 't help disagreeing him, and he had the deplorable propensity for awarding prominent posts to leaders who seemed unsuccessful. Texas joined the Confederate States of America on March 2, and afterward supplanted its representative, Sam Houston, when he declined to take an oath to the Confederate States of America. These seven states withdrew from the United States and took control of military/maritime establishments, ports, and custom houses inside their limits, setting off the American Civil War. A month after the Confederate States of America was established, on March 4, 1861, Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as President of the United States. In his inaugural address, he contended that the Constitution was a "more impeccable union" than the prior Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, that it was a binding contract, and called the withdrawal "lawfully void." The legitimate issue of whether the Constitution is a binding contract has seldom been tended to by scholars, and still today is a fervently idea. When it became apparent to the Confederate leaders that mountaineers were deserting the Confederate Army in large numbers, laws were passed that would punish deserters and their families. Additionally Confederate soldiers were dispatched to catch the deserters to enforce the recently passed laws. Once word got out the deserters were being hunted down and punished, the bond between most mountaineers began to thicken. They would hide each other's men during the day so that Confederate soldiers couldn't find them. Then come nightfall the soldiers would continue their journeys home. Resentment for mountaineers soon grew and punishments for deserters were soon executed on the spot without the written authorization of the proper military powers. Punishments included on the spot execution, extreme beating and torture, robbing their houses, raping and/or beating their wives and children. This only served to expand the differences between mountaineers and the rest of the southerners and increased the number of desertions by mountaineer men. mountaineers and Unionists. Union forces in the Border States such as Kentucky or Maryland quickly figured out that mountaineers and Confederate forces were not working together effectively. (Union General William Tecumseh Sherman) A wise quote by an even wiser man, The Civil War was agreed a "hell". For four years (1862–1865) a war was fought between both Northern Union states and Southern Confederate states over the matter of slavery. During this time period many changes were happening in the United States; the election of an anti–slavery president, Southern states trying to secede to become their own independent country. These factors and many more including slavery were the main causes of The Civil War. To begin slavery was the main income for southern states. The thought that Confederates were the only who owned slaves is a common misconception; actually both sides had owned slaves. The North did not completely disagree with slavery but the fact that Southern states were trying to create their own laws and secede. This had angered both sides leading to the Civil War. During war time both side realized that they couldn't not win without drilling the men; teaching them how to shoot, and disciplining them. A group of drummers was the key importance to the infantry; they would play a beat which let their soldiers know whether to attack or retreat. This was a huge importance due to both sides constantly firing their weapons at each other, it allowed for a distinct noise to be heard rather than a yell of 'Charge!" Back on the home front women had to take charge as the male role in the house, since the men were at war fighting. This allowed for women to actually have a voice in history rather than being pushed off to the sideline. Women of this time period started taking interest in to men games, such as dominoes, card games, and gambiling. During soldiers down time they were either resting or recovering waiting for the next battle to commence. There are many symbols from the Civil War that embrace and celebrate the ideals of the Confederate States of America (CSA): the "stars and bars" of the CSA flag, high schools who are nicknamed "Rebels", and just a few miles from Lake Braddock is a major highway, the Jefferson Davis Highway, named after the President of CSA. Today, over 150 years after the creation of the CSA, these symbols need to be abolished as they are offensive to a significant number of Americans. Though there might be many secondary reasons for the creation of the CSA and the start of the Civil War, the primary reason was for the "right" of white people to enslave black people. The symbols that celebrate the Confederacy, therefore, are also symbols celebrating the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
