Public Speaking Interview
Pamela Stovall
I interviewed Durward "Durk" Lynch he is in my field of interest where I want to work as one day. He is a Nurse Practitioner at the Vanden Bosh
Clinic and at the College Clinic. He gave information on his background and what drove him to be a Nurse Practitioner (NP). He really has had a lot of
experience, as I will explain to you what he has shared.
Durk was 18 years old graduating from high school and at the time he didn't have the goal or even thought to be a (NP). He was volunteering in a
hospital working with paralyzed patients. He was in his 1st year of college and majoring in Psychology. He really had an interest in writing on health
and disease. He used to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only time he had to talk in front of people was at a commencement ceremony. He doesn't really like to talk in front of a huge crowd. The last
question I asked was how important to success in your career is effective public speaking? He stated, "Public speaking is not a big event in my
career. It's not really what I do maybe I shy away from it. In my career I only talk one on one with my patients and there family. Everything I discuss
with my patients is private and confidential. So therefore I don't need to really give a speech among a crowd."
I really enjoyed the interview listening to his experience and made me want to strive even more to become a good Nurse Practitioner. His words were
really helpful and he gave me helpful tips on what route to take to get to my career goals. I thanked him for his time and thanked him for the helpful
advice. That was my interview that I chose to talk about according to my field I am interested

Our Time Wideman Summary
Do you have any idea how draining it is to be black in America? Rich or poor, educated or uneducated, famous or anonymous? Do you know what it
feels like to be classified as ghetto and lazy because you come from or live in the hood? Better yet have you ever been called "white washed"
because you seek a higher education, and are able to actually hold a conversation without saying the word "umm" in every other sentence? Do you
have any idea? I do. Not everyone is a direct result of their environment and bad choices. In the essay "Our Time" Wideman questions the idea of
black life in America and uses both he and his brother's story to explain how the choices we make in life are not always easy, and how sometimes
others may not always understand the reasons behind them. Throughout the essay he uses the voices of his brother Robby, His mother, and Himself to
express and convey the different perspectives through Robby's eyes. Widemen has to look past his own views... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Throughout Our Time there are several examples in which the voices of the different characters change. Widemen frequently interrupts this
narrative to talk about the problems he is having as a writer. "The hardest habit to break, since it was the habit of a lifetime, would be listening to
myself listen to him. That habit would destroy any chance of seeing my brother on his terms; and seeing him in his terms, learning his terms, seemed
the whole point of learning his story. (p. 437) He also praises his mother's remarkable capacity for she says is "trying on the other person's point of
view." He talks about Robby and how different memories of him confirm some of his actions, "won't take me no time to rob something, we stone
thieves."(p. 452) One of the main focus of the story is how the family dealt with the resentment towards the

Final Draft of paper 1 In the essay "Our Time" by John Edgar Wideman he often takes a break from the narrative to address that he has many
problems as a writer. He does this to try to consciously address these problems and hopefully solve these problems. He believes that if these problems
are not rectified he would destroy any chance he has at telling a truthful account of his brother's story. To rectify these problems he employs a variety of
unique techniques in his writing. Looking at these techniques it is not always 100% clear how these are fixing his problems. It is also evident that the
way he is writing may be going against a lot of things we were taught in school about our writing. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first of the three is Garth's death. When Garth died he lost his best friend, one of the few people that he truly loved. After Garth died Robby
got big into drugs, I think its cause he was depressed after the loss and wanted to forget. It was a major turning point in Robby's life and in my
opinion the most important of the three events that could have started the story. The second one is his own birth. People may wonder why this
wouldn't be the logical starting point seeing as how it's his birth and makes sense chronologically. The reason this can be seen as starting point of
his troubles isn't because he was born so it could happen as you'd probably think. It's because for as long as he could remember his birthday was
overshadowed. It was right after Christmas so it always felt a little insignificant compared to the biggest holiday of the year. There were also the
unfortunate events of death that seemed to follow his birthday around like a cloud. All of his Grandparents died near his birthday and that has to take a
toll on you. To have your birthday associated with the deaths of loved ones must be extremely hard. The third and final possible starting point is his
childhood home in Shadyside. Nothing particularly traumatizing happened in this passage but it's still important none the less. In this he talks about
how he grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood. He was around white people all the time and felt that they had it easier than him. Also

Essay about Discusses the Reliability of Specific Narrators
Discuss the reliability or otherwise of specific narrators employed in the texts that you have studied on this module.
When discussing the reliability of specific narrators within a text there is a need to look at the consistency of the narrators and also their
trustworthiness. It is also important to assess how the author has used the narrators within a novel and to what extent this use has on a readers view of
reliability. The novelsHeart of Darkness By Joseph Conrad and A Hero of Our Time By Mikhail Lermontov both contain more than one narrator. Heart
of Darkness has two narrators, an anonymous passenger on a pleasure ship who listens to Marlow's story and Marlow himself. The first narrator
speaks in the first person plural on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is the reader who has to decide on many occasions whether Marlow's opinions are close to the truth or way off.
The reader may find it easy to trust Marlow's opinions and also what he says because of how the story is told to them. Heart of Darkness is framed
by the narration of another nameless observer (which could quite easily be them). As a result, Marlow's whole story appears enclosed in quotation
marks. One reason for this may be that the reader feels as if he/she is hearing the tale as well. Having Marlow in front of us on the Nellie, we feel
the immediacy of his speaking voice and the actual sensation of a sailor spinning a yarn before us. If Conrad had written the whole novel in the
first person, getting rid of the primary narrator, he would have needed to leave out Marlow's hesitations and digressions, which are important to the
style of the novel. We would also miss the feeling that Marlow was working out the meaning of his tale as he went along and that he trusts us to be
a part of that process. A writer, unlike a speaker usually has things worked out in their head before hand. This working out of things alongside the
reader could be seen as a sign of reliability because it could be said that Marlow is trying hard to be truthful so he can work out a correct meaning. He
would come to false conclusions if he did not use the truth to get there.
Conrad lets us experience Marlow's sensations along with

The Great War Of Our Time
The Great War of Our Time was a pleasure to read. It was an emotional ride for me throughout the entire book. It made me laugh out loud; giggle to
myself, tear up, become upset and sometimes it caused a pleasant grin to grow across my face. From the beginning of this book to the very last page, I
thought was an easy read.
He starts the book off talking about the three primary missions of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA): collecting secrets clandestinely, conducting
all–source analysis for the president and his senior advisors, and undertaking actions covertly to further US foreign policy objectives. With this
being the agency's mission statement so to speak, I was very surprised to read how it was a competition within the agency although the entire
agency is suppose to be working toward one common cause, one common goal. Alec Station, arguably one of the most important CIA operational
units at the time was led by an officer who was not a trained operations officer. I agreed with Morell when he basically said that he found that to be
strange. Why wouldn't the CIA have put an experienced trained operations office as lead on this particular operational unit? After all, it was created to
follow Bin Ladin. Another question that I had was, again, here we have an operational unit whose sole job is to follow Bin Ladin but the agency does
not give the support that is needed by Alec Station to conduct its job properly.
This situation brought to light for me why the

Mikhail Lermontov's A Hero Of Our Time
Mikhail Lermontov's 'A Hero of our Time' is set in the 1840s, a crucial time in Russian history. Pechorin was a revolutionary character in Russian
literature due to his cynical and amoral personality that alienates him from all social strata. 'A Hero of our Time' generated a large amount of
outrage from the public due to Lermontov, claiming Pechorin to be the 'hero' of our its time. 'Bela' is a framed narrative portrayed from the views
of an old friend, Maxim Maximych, however, the story told by Maxim Maximych suggests it is an unjust and biased view of our 'hero' thus we as
readers are to depict the true 'hero' Pechorin is. Examining the chapter 'Bela,' his actions signify his capability to damage a society, demonstrating him
to be the callous and manipulative character he is. The first instance we see our 'hero's' destructive instincts is when he meets Bela. Despite his high
level of intelligence, he acts very much on instinct. Having met Bela on the night of 'her eldest sister's wedding,' his response was "Enchanting!". His
concern isn't that she's the daughter of the chief but rather it's her physical appearance that preoccupies him. This meeting with Bela brings out
Pechorin's impulsive nature. As he overhears a conversation between Azamat and Kazbich, with the former making an offer:"If you want, I'll steal my
sister for you... no–one has seen such a wife..." the two characters are in negotiation over the price of Azamat's sister, 'for your Karagyoz...I'll steal my

Time In The Play Our Town
If a book were to tell someone's life, how could you tell if it was the next day or the next year? Usually authors have different strategies to give
readers an idea of how much time has passed. However, this is especially harder in plays because the perception of time to readers is mainly
dependent on the verbal script of the characters. In the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder, his usage of the concept oftime is incorporated by major life
events such as their life as children, the wedding and a funeral with the help of the stage manager and the title of the acts.
To begin with the play is essentially about the lives of two neighboring families, the title of the first act "Daily lives" is appropriate and telling of the
beginning of the play. In the beginning of Act one it basically introduces the readers to the characters . The families are getting their kids ready for
school and the mothers meet with each other. The use of school and their morning routine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The major life events are summed up that way because that's what life in the town consisted of growing up, getting married then die. The play on
time by the author truly shows how many take their time alive for granted and how quickly it goes by. Such as when she chose to relive a day and
she noticed how everyone wasn't really taking everything in and enjoying themselves. The stage manager was the key tool in translating the authors
perspective of time to the readers and the acts being few kind of shows how quickly and empty her life was. In a nutshell she was just a young girl,
then got married and died. The message I personally got from the play was to live life to the fullest because I personally wouldn't want three relatively
short acts to describe my life from start to

Analysis Of Soldiers Home By Ernest Hemingway
Soldiers Home "It's a funny thing coming home. Nothing changes. Everything looks the same, feels the same, even smells the same. You realize what's
changed is you." – F. Scott Fitzgerald The devastating imagery soldiers witness in everyday life is stuck with them, and those memories eventually
come to the surface. There's nothing half as appreciable as coming home again. The short story presents the homecoming of an outcasted soldier
following the war. Krebs, Hemingway's main character, experiences frequent lonely sensations as he concludes that he, and the young girls that had
grown up were the only things that had changed in the town of Oklahoma when returning. The noticeable difference between the members of armed
forces returning from overseas duty and those who remained home creates an immense conflict in the story. That is, as it lies, the fraud that is
demanded for survival. In "Soldier's Home", Ernest Hemingway, the author develops a distaste for everything that had happened to Krebs in the war;
which may well be a deliberation of, though not restricted to, the livelihood being taken from soldiers today, coming home from war. Hemingway
reveals the short story through a narrator's voice. The narrator is not necessarily a bystander, as he recognizes, for the most part, that the war stripped
the soul from Krebs. It is made clear that Hemingway understands more than what can be physically observed about Krebs, as his feelings are
thoroughly detailed throughout.

Nick's Psychological Development in Ernest Hemingway's In Our Time In Hemingway's collection of short stories, In Our Time, we follow a
character by the name of Nick Adams. We are introduced to Nick in "Indian Camp" as a young boy, and follow him to adulthood in both Parts I and II
of "Big Two–Hearted River". Through this we see Nick develop and learn about some major facts of life. Nick is a character who is changes through
the effects of war on many different levels. Although Hemingway hardly mentions the war, he uses the stories to express different effects and
emotions caused by the war. In "Indian Camp" we meet Nick as he joins his father to help a pregnant Indian woman in labor. Nick's father, a doctor,

This shows that due to Nick's past, he is not ready for relationships with women. He does not want to live his life in the traditional manner that
Marjorie expects him to. Due to his lack of development, he cannot communicate and commit at this point in his life. It is also significant that the fish
they are trying to catch will not bite onto the line. This signifies Nick trying to tell Marjorie that now is not a time for commitment. He does not want
to get married, settle down, and give up his masculine life. The next interaction Nick has is with his friend Bill in "The Three Day Blow". The two
spend the entire time drinking while Nick questions his decision to break up with Marjorie. "The Three–Day Blow" can also represent a time in Nick's
life when only the most important things in his life are necessary. For Nick and Bill, the important thing to remain is their masculinity, including
their love of sports. For him to become a tough, manly man, Nick needs to "blow" his emotions about Marjorie out of his system. Bill tries to
convince Nick that he made the right decision in not wanting to get married. This is Nick's struggle to decide if he wants to be a "man's man", or a
"family man". He is trying to decide what type of person he wants to become, and whether that life includes marriage, love, and domesticity. Instead of
continuing to think this through, Nick and Bill

Our Time Is Up Analysis
The central aspects of documenting everyday life into a narrative that holds purpose and yet leaves the audience with a resounding message is the
essence of what a short film attempts to accomplish. Film connects the two paradigms of visual and emotional appeal, while still capturing what it
means to be human. From the monotonous to the exorbitant interior of the seemingly intricate parts that ultimately create the sum of our lives, the
subject of death in of its parts, is insensitive to the narratives that we place on ourselves. The affair of death within its incomparable and obstinate state
of the absolute is portrayed in a thoughtful way in short film "Our Time Is Up" by Rob Pearlstein, where a psychologist named Dr. Stern finds out he
only has six weeks to live. The attentive matter that is due in part of death is depicted in an unconventional way in which engages the audience in a
relatable and humorous way through the different yet personalized perspective of the characters in "Our Time Is Up". According to "Everything's An
Argument" by Andrea Lunsford, John Ruszkiewicz, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stern's diagnosis provokes a humorous response to his patients. Dr. Stern's patients are archetypes to the incessant fears that are perceptively life
consuming in contrast to Dr. Stern's situation. The dark humor evokes a response upon Dr. Stern's behalf to give tough love and an active approach to
resolve such issues. This humor manifests into slapstick and situational humor where the patients might not be aware of the reason of the sudden
change of methodology. This humor directly translates to the audience where the threat of death is seen less severe. Adding humor is a thoughtful and
qualitative approach to death as the director's reason of such is that death is inevitable however taking life less seriously is more enjoyable than wasting

Summary Of Ernest Hemingway'sBig Two Hearted River Part 1
Response 1 Ernest Hemingway's "Big Two Hearted River Part 1" appears as simple tale of a man going camping. It talks about his journey through a
burnt area of land. He ultimately sets up camp, has some fond memories of a friend, and then he goes to sleep. However the story, in my opinion, has a
much deeper meaning. Everything that happens in the story has a reason behind it being mentioned. Hemingway, I believe, shows Nick's growth
through analogies that often fly over the reader's head, including the transition from the burnt town to the river, the river conditions, and the trouts'
movement in the river and the sooty appearance of the grasshoppers. Hemingway sets the location for the story as soon as Nick gets off the train
"There was no town, nothing but the rails and the burned–over country. The thirteen saloons that had lined the one street of Seney had not left a trace"
( 133). A town that was once booming with people had been burnt down. Why did Hemingway point out the destroyed town? It would appear that the
focal point would be the town, but Hemingway quickly transitions into Nick going to a river. As the story says, "Nick looked at the burned–over
stretch of hillside, where he had expected to find the scattered houses of the town and then walked down the railroad track to the bridge over the
river. The river was there" (133). He sets the reader up by talking about a once great town now being burnt to a crisp. The idea here is to have the
reader thinking "man, all these people have lost their home." Despite this, it is clear that the town being burnt down is not the most important thing.
Hemingway could have easily told a story about the town; instead he quickly moved onto the river. The river is a very important and recurring piece
of the story. When Hemingway says, "Nick looked down into the clear, brown water, colored from the pebbly bottom" (133), Notice how he talks
about water being brown–colored from the pebbles. It's clear that the water has changed due to the fire. Despite the changes, the fish were still doing
just fine. Hemingway seems to drive home this point as he mentions, " It was a long long time since Nick had looked into a stream and seen trout.
They were very satisfactory.

This Way For The Gas Ladies And Gentlemen Summary
I definitely have never taken a class quite like this one, to say the least. Overall, I enjoyed the novels, the lectures, and brief Russian history very
much. There's a reason I never missed a class–I liked going. However, the attendance and participation was not ideal. It actually really pissed me off.
Not your fault–I understand where you're coming from with having attendance not a priority, especially due to health. But it does suck when students
take advantage. Yes, people get sick. Though, when students say they are simply "too busy," I don't buy it. It's a ridiculous excuse. We have a lot of
time during the day. On top of that, students enroll in a course fully knowing the days and hours the class is scheduled. So, yeah, miss a few days,...

I don't know about you, but when I read fiction with historical events involved, I'm engaged but unsettled. As if, I'm in the wrong to be reading these
words from this writer's voice who is attempting to create an already done past in order to give readers something enjoyable. "This Way for the Gas,
Ladies and Gentlemen" by Tadeusz Borowski has been one of those types. A heart–wrenching short story and I hate that I love it. Why do we like
reading about the past that's gone? More importantly, a past so horrific and cruel, then created into a fiction to please our curiosity of what we will
never understand? Facts and numbers can only go so far. If you can't tell already, I'm big on quotes. Almost every class I take, I find myself writing

my opinion. Moreover, it relates to the whole dilemma of translations as adaptations and interpretations... as you'll notice based off of these quotes.
The context of each quote is gone. Maybe, the all add up together, maybe they don't and are just random phrases. Meaning, even when we talk in the

In Our Time by Ernest Hemingway
In Our Time, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a collection of short stories that were published in 1925 and defined Hemingway's writing style from
there on. As a symbolic image of Hemingway himself, Nick Adams is faced with troubling relationships that ultimately define who he is. Life
experiences from young to old define show how Nick lives his love before, during, and after World War One. These experiences strengthen his
relationships, maturity, and masculinity. One of the most important themes, masculinity, is portrayed directly at the start of Hemingway'sshort story
collection starting with "Indian Camp." In the first short story the reader sees the novels protagonist, Nick Adams', "response to violence and suffering
inflicted on others will ultimately define his own sense of masculinity" (Frazier). Witnessing this dramatic event at such a young age will define
Nick's life and change the way he views certain aspects of life just from watching a woman give birth. Nick's maturity and responsibility are also
themes that are greatly exploited just as well as his masculinity. The reader first learns about Nick and his relationships with his girlfriend Marjorie in
the short story titled "The End of Something." The title of this section symbolically relates to what is happening because Nick and Marjorie get into an
argument which seems to end their relationship. Lisa Tyler states "what Hemingway seems to be suggesting inIn Our Time is that men's characters are

Nick's father does not want to answer his wife's questions, and when he does, he lies to her. He assumes that she will not understand his reasoning
for the argument he just had outside. In addition, his wife's religious demands for him to not lose his temper show that she does not want him to
be a stereotypical aggressive and protective male. Also, Christian Science religion does not believe in medicine, which means that she has no
respect for her husband's work. Nick's father decides to go hunting, where he can express his masculinity. When Nick decides to go with him, Nick
is also showing an interest in male to male interaction over male to female interaction with his mother. We see Nick at the end of the story, still
calling his father "daddy" and wanting to follow him around. If the family would interact more, then it is probable that Nick would be able to
develop more psychologically. He is still being treated like a little child, so he is still acting like one.
We next see Nick and his reactions to relationships. In "The End of Something" Nick breaks up with his girlfriend Marjorie. He expresses to her that
he is bored with his life and that they cannot stay together. This shows that due to Nick's past, he is not ready for relationships with women. He does

The 's Usage Of Chance And Coincidence As The Mode Of...
Lermontov's usage of chance and coincidence as the mode of expression of fate can be seen explicitly in "Princess Mary" and "The Fatalist," both
short stories from Pechorin's journal. "Princess Mary" retells the story of the time that Pechorin spent in the town of Pyatigorsk, a spa town located in
the Caucases. In Pyatigorsk, Pechorin encounters an old acquaintance of his, Grushnitsky, who Pechorin secretly dislikes despite his veil of friendship.
Also present in the town are Princess Ligovskaya and her daughter, the titular Princess Mary. Princess Ligovskaya and Princess Mary are very wealthy
and normally live in Moscow, where they live as eminent socialites. Grushnitsky is instantly captivated by the young Princess Mary and gradually...

Pechorin, now anxious at the probability of his survival, loses the toss and thus stations himself on the edge of the cliff. Pechorin, now doubting that
he will survive, gazes upon Grushnitsky with a degree of aristocratic fear, waiting for Grushnitsky to shoot. However as Grushnitsky stands just six
paces from the unarmed Pechorin, he loses his resolve to kill and exclaims, "I can't do it"(Lermontov 123). Yet he turns back toward Pechorin and fires
capriciously, merely grazing Pechorin's knee and causing him no harm. Knowing that Grushnitsky's second did not load his pistol, Pechorin has the
pistol loaded and proceeds to kill the unrepentant Grushnitsky.
Chance and Coincidence are thus used by Lermontov as the mode of expression of Fate in "Princess Mary." It was not fated for Pechorin to die at the
hand of Grushnitsky, thus chance compelled Grushnitsky to lose his will to kill Pechorin. Additionally, chance causes Grushnitsky's random shot at
Pechorin to merely graze Pechorin's leg. Because Pechorin was not predestined to die in this duel, everything unfolded precisely the way it needed to
in order to insure Pechorin's continued well–being. Conversely, the events of the duel occurred in such a way that assured Grushnitsky's death,
illustrating his predestination to die during the duel. Firstly, Pechorin would not have been able to shoot Grushnitsky if he did not know that a bullet
had not been loaded into his gun. Pechorin only gained

A Byronic Hero Of Our Time By Mikhail Lermontov
Pechorin ––– A Byronic Hero
A Hero of Our Time, written by Mikhail Lermontov, consists of 5 stories that reflect the life, the idea and the personality of the main character named
Pechorin. Pechorin is not a typical hero in romantic literature perspective; instead, he is a great representation of a pathetic Byronic hero that more
commonly appears in the time of Lermontov.
Different from a traditional hero and as a typical Byronic hero, Pechorin is reflected to be self–centered and manipulative in many parts of the story.
His selfishness is shown through his indifference to others and through the despicable methods of getting the things he wants. Pechorin is sexually
appealing, and could won the love of many beauties easily. However, he never really cherished his charming and tried to manipulate the girls in
the way he wants. When he flirts with a girl, mostly it is because he is temporarily enjoying their beauty and the pleasure he can get from them.
When he really falls in love with them, he still only knows to receiving the love from them and never really dedicates anything for his loves. When
he fell in love with Bela, he got her through a despicable trade of the horse of Kazbich with Bela's brother. This trade made Bela lost her brother and

Feminism In Our Time Analysis
Naomi Weisstein and Susan Brownmiller were powerful voices for women during the second wave of feminism in America. Their writings, "Kinder,
Kuche, Kirche as Scientific Law: Psychology Constructs the Female" and "Against Our Will: Men, Women, and Rape", found in the anthology
'Feminism in Our Time', reflected how throughout the 20th century, popular medical and psychological models were centered around men which
resulted in women receiving inaccurate and inappropriate treatments. They argued that the oppression of women was perpetuated through false
narratives under the guise of science but with no empirical evidence. Both Weisstein and Brownmiller harshly criticized the popular use of Freudian

Grigory Pechorin: The Superfluous Man
Mikhail Lermontov's protagonist, Grigory Pechorin, belongs to that group of literary characters known individually as the 'superfluous man.'; Generally
an intelligent, educated individual, the superfluous man would appear to be one who has been either unjustly treated or outcast by society in general.
The superfluous man attempts to find a place for himself in the world, but perhaps due to the combination of his talents, upbringing, personality and
intelligence, continually finds himself on the outs with his peers.
If the above definition is accepted as valid, then Pechorin might appear to be the consummate superfluous man. From the outpouring of his tale of woe

It would not even require major personality shifts, but rather a loosing of certain inhibitions, along with a different application of self–monitoring.
Pechorin claims that he does not enjoy bringing misery to others, and that when he does, he feels just as miserable. I do not hold the belief that a
person is incapable of changing – with the exception of a certain type of person – and those who refuse to make the
necessary changes are little better then a coward who runs from an engagement with the enemy. It is not logical behavior to inflict misery upon
oneself, without that misery being in the service of a higher ideal, and even then, it still runs contrary to the natural instinct for survival. The fact that a
very substantial portion of the populace engages in this very sort of illogical behavior does not constitute a defense for Pechorin, nor does it make the
behavior reasoned and logical.
The other sort of person, the sort that is incapable of changing, are the insane. Generally, they are not a concern, as once they are identified as such,
they are usually dealt with, these days by either medication or institutionalization. In general, most are incapable of fitting into society at large. One

Our Time Is Now Analysis
Colton Dixon is perhaps best known as the Mohawk styled Tennessee local who appeared on American Idol Season 11. His first album A
Messenger was the No. 1 selling album by a new Christian Artist in 2013, and his distinct tones and look have marked him as one of the best up
and coming Christian artists in the genre. Opening with the sounds of an "S.O.S." call, Dixon ushers in an intensity that thrusts the album into a
rock infused tale about the purpose of life. Synth, electro and voice over push for a crossover into "Our Time Is Now," and the fast pace of a rock
tune rich in electric guitar and a booming drum will get your heart racing. Saying, "Now let the old die, 'cause there is new life, forever starts from
now," this song, which in essence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pop infused with Dixon's trademark intensity, I admire the delivery of this song because it goes beyond what is expected. As a CCM release it
ticks all the boxes: the lyrics are truthful, the melody is catchy, and Christians flock to it. But beyond this, it is a powerful song that escalates to an
anthem that prompts people to step into a moment of worship and true surrender. With a melody that will stick in your head and innately make you
feel good for singing along, this was an obvious choice for a single. Stepping into "Loud And Clear," sharp rock tones are delivered through the
electric guitar, and an authoritative voice similar in style to Evermore's "Truth of the World," clears the space for Dixon to command a compelling
song. There is a purity and strength to Colton's voice, which enables him to deliver this song with authority and conviction. Less capable singers would
quickly become lost in the intensity of the instrumental, but we find Dixon coexists with this neatly and drives home the message of the

English Language Barriers
Even though some immigrants come into the U.S and go into the field of entrepreneurship by either starting from scratch or having the requirements
needed, it's harder for most immigrants to find employment with well–paying jobs because not all have a safe place to go home to and not every
immigrant comes into the U.S breaking the language barrier. Essentially, not every foreigner that comes to the U.S is prepared to handle the stress that
comes with communicating with one another, that can be experienced as a result of not knowing enough of the language to speak English and be
understood. This problem is presented, creating multiple obstacles for a newcomer to achieve their goals, either to obtain a good job to support their
family or hoping the money in the United States is better than what they earned in their original country. But because many lack the skill to
communicate with others, people who speak fluently English may get frustrated with those who can't connect or have difficulty understanding what
one is trying to get across to the other, decreasing the chance of the migratory to be granted a job, able to ace a job interview, open opportunities to find
a home, make friends or even struggle with great difficulty getting the information they need. Struggling with their fluency will impact dramatically
their self–esteem, causing one to feel ashamed and afraid due to them knowing they don't have the ease of speaking freely their broken English
without being laughed at or criticized. Furthermore, another disadvantage new settlers have is the insufficiency of transportation. When families
come in a hurry to the U.S, it's highly likely almost every newcomer doesn't have someone or a way to transit from one location to another. Let's
say, a man doesn't have access to a car to drive from his house to the building he works in. Let's not forget his workplace is on the other side of
town. He has a couple options now, to mount up earlier in the morning to walk to his workplace and still manage to arrive on time, take a bus to the
nearest stop to his work building until he can afford a car or ask a friend to give him a ride until he has saved enough. Saving enough money will take
a couple of months depending

Indian Camp and Soldiers Home Young Women as Objects Essay
Indian Camp and Soldiers Home Young Women as Objects
In Ernest Hemingway's short stories "Indian Camp" and "Soldier's Home," young women are treated as objects whose purpose is either reproduction
or pleasure. They do not and cannot participate to a significant degree in the masculine sphere of experience, and when they have served their
purpose, they are set aside. They do not have a voice in the narrative, and they represent complications in life that must be overcome in one way or
another. While this portrayal of young women is hardly unique to Hemingway, the author uses it as a device to probe the male psyche more deeply.

*Paragraph Break*When the doctor's exalted pose breaks down after the discovery of the Indian husband's bloody suicide, he seeks refuge in
dismissive rationalizations. Neither the woman nor her dead husband matter at this stage; the doctor simply wants to soothe Nick's feelings. He does
not want Nick to comprehend that his father is capable of "miscalculating greatly" (Flora 28), and thus he continues to treat the young woman who
gave birth as an object, diminishing his son's concerns with phrases like "very exceptional" and "hardly ever." In the end, the combination of the
sunrise and the fish in the lake help Nick to take his mind off the gory scene he has witnessed. His young, male feeling of certainty "that he would
never die" in all its glorious naivete is what prevails.
*Paragraph Break*In "Soldier's Home," Harold Krebs finds himself peculiarly removed from the young women he sees around him in his hometown,
even though he is apparently at an age when most men take a keen interest in female companionship. Shattered and drained by his experiences as a
fighting man in the First World War, he lacks the motivation to pursue girls. All he can do admire their physical appearance, which Hemingway
catalogues in detail: "hair cut short," "round Dutch collars," "silk stockings" and so on.

Are Suspensions Worth Our Time
Are suspensions worth our time or are they just a waste valuable learning time for the students? Well, in my opinion, suspensions are not benefiting the
students in any way. Sure it keeps them out of trouble and causing havoc with their peers but it is destroying their education. If we would stop
suspending students the benefits would be, students are getting the education they need, they can get counselling in school, and can benefit their future.
Instead of suspending students, the school should be teaching or let the student study or do homework instead of doing nothing to better their
knowledge. If a student is being punished for their actions, then they should have a punishment that benefits their needs. If a student has acted up and

Life Of Our Time As A Student
In the fast paced life of our time as a student, it is easy to forget to reflect on our time here at Boston University. Through all of our exams, papers,
group projects, and late–night outings, our thoughts ebb and flow, and often we forget to reflect on all the progress that we've made throughout the
semester. As students, we're exposed to so much information, be we also find ourselves relearning the things we thought we understood all along, and
so, for this assignment I have chosen to go back and reflect on my reflections. My goal is to better understand the journey that I have gone through as a
first–semester Writing Consultant, to highlight the anticipated challenges and the unsolicited worrying that I had at the beginning of the year, and to
celebrate the progress that I've made along the way. I will draw upon my reflections, using specific quotes, as well as some of the course material, to
understand where my 'ah–ha' moments occured and where they still might need to happen. Prior to beginning my role as a consultant, I was a bit
nervous – or more accurately, I was very nervous! Although I had plenty of experience working as either a tutor or a teacher' assistant, I realized that
most of my experience dealt with teaching math and science. In my mind, I believed that math and science were less fluid and more structured, and
their clear and concrete answers made the tutor's job easy by providing the educator with an answer that was undisputable. Before my job

Title
On December 6, 1865, the 13th amendment of the Constitution was ratified, abolishing slavery in the United States. This change was just one start to
the continuing uphill battle against racism, but the end of one that had caused millions to suffer at the hands of others. On the other side of the coin, on
August 6, 1945, president Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, obliterating the city and killing hundreds of
thousands of people. As demonstrated by these two separate events in history, change and actions have the possibility to be positive or negative.Ernest
Hemingway highlights this point throughout his stories when writing about death, a topic that is usually seen as negative by putting it in a more
positive light. Ernest Hemingway uses animals to symbolize death, and does so by utilizing cowardice, weakness, and shamefulness. In "The Short
Happy Life of Francis Macomber", Hemingway uses the lion to represent the death of cowardice. Choosing to indulge their freetime on a safari,
Francis Macomber and his wife Margot take a trip to Africa, but when faced with the task of ending the lion's life on the safari, Macomber's mind
seems to be getting the better of him: "[H]e pulled until he thought his finger would break. Then he knew he had the safety on" (14). Even though he is
successful in shooting the lion, Francis still cannot let go of his cowardly behavior. His

What Is A Superfluous Man
When Mikhail Lermontov wrote A Hero of Our Time, his main character, Gregory Alexandovich Pechorin was arguably the prototype of what was to
become the "superfluous man," which would become prominent in so many other Russian novels. As most literature's subtle goals are not so easily
discernable, Lermontov subtly used Pechorin to debunk romanticism in an indirect way. He did so in a way that shocks readers out of their ordinary
idea of what a protagonist (specifically romantic) should be, because Pechorin is in fact, a superfluous man. The understanding of what Romanticism,
the Byronic Hero, and how the superfluous man came to be, shows how it can be iterated that Pechorin helps show Romanticism as the set of

It sounds glamourous in theory. Russia contracted Romanticism through Germany due to Catherine the Great's emphasis on education amongst other
things, "Few other rulers of her time who had such sweeping plans for reform."(Billlington) Catherine also brought over many other educated peoples
for her government in fact 30% of her government was not Russian (Hosking). Russia needed her youth to go to other countries to bring the education
there. Due to students traveling abroad, works were translated from French, eventually prose was introduced, as well as Gallicisms (Billington). This
seems to only point more towards where Romanticism came from. Ironically, neither Russia nor Germany spoke the romantic language, French.
Arguably, Romanticism was born of the political upheaval and empowerment of the people of France and America for that matter. After this age of
revolutions, the energy left over from the realization that people have these "undeniable human rights" probably led to a core value of Romanticism,
which is that everyone has a

Essay: "The Three–Day Blow"
Drinking is one of people's main problems. Drinking distorts self–perception and actions. There are many reasons for drinking: depression, happiness, a
social event. These incentives are developed in "The Three–Day Blow" by Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway uses drinking as a form of expression
through his character Nick and his inner conflict.

His face looked strange. He smiled at the face in the mirror and it grinned back at him. He winked and it went on. It was not his face but it didn't
make any difference." (19) This quote shows that drinking distorts perception and allows misconception, like Nick sees in his face. His face was not
the same he saw what drinking was doing to him, but it did not matter. There was no other solution to his problems. He just continued drinking.
Drinking is used as a bandage or a way to forget. It causes no self–control and therefore to speak freely. Hemingway uses drinking as a form of
expression, as Nick does realizing he lost the woman of his life: "All he knew was that he had once had Marjorie and that he had lost her. She was
gone and he had sent her away. That was all that mattered. It was all gone, finished." (20) Since Nick is drunk, it consents him to reflect and express
himself openly. This shows that drinking is seen as a form of expression.
Everything he had just withered away. At that point he realized that drinking was of no use. No matter how much you drink, it is not a solution to
your problems. It keeps going on in a cycle: "There is no use getting drunk." (22) Only after they get drunk do they realize that it is not worth it and
drinking does not help. In the end the two friends don't resolve

Big Two Hearted River Modernism Essay
Big Two Hearted River by Ernest Hemingway is a prime example of Modernist writing. The main character Nick embarks on a quest for self
discovery away from his fragmented society. After the war, Nick returns to a society with a loss of old values, structures, and beliefs. Therefore, Nick
isolates himself in the wilderness upon returning. The reader experiences Nick's post–war mentality, and sees the struggles Nick faces with anxiety
about the unknown. It is clear that Nick's journey represents the modernist search for individuality in the midst of a broken society. While alone by the
water, Nick witnesses a trout. Although it is just a simple trout, the way in which it moves provides a strong sense of meaning:
A big trout shot upstream in a long angle, only his shadow marking the angle, then lost his shadow as he came through the surface of the water, caught
the sun, and then, as he went back into the stream under the surface, his shadow seemed to float down the stream with the current, unresisting, to his
post under the bridge where he tightened facing up into the current. ("Big Two–Hearted River: Part I" 1202)
The fact that the trout swims upstream is significant in itself. This type of fish travels while fighting against current. This scene offers symbolism. The
trout represents Nick, and the water symbolizes society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nick shows that he possesses this trait when he fishes. "Nick did not like to fish with other men on the river. Unless they were part of your party, they
spoiled it" ("Big Two–Hearted River Part II" 1209). His desire for self isolation is a trait for the hero of modernism. Modernist heros are often
alienated due to the brokenness of society. Since Nick wants to fish alone, it shows how he prefers to stray away from socialization. In addition, being
alone grants Nick with a better opportunity to find himself as an individual in his fragmented

Ernest Hemingway's 'In Our Time': An Analysis
"In Our Time' is a modernist impression compiled as a collection of short stories that are set thematically to be emblematic of the experiences had
in the War. These short stories are meant to represent how the author perceived reality at the time. It is set as real life is set, in a realm of
disjointed events, that make sense overall, but for an outsider looking in, they are confusing and disconnected. The main theme in this book is that
of individual experience, which is written as if the reader was looking through the eyes of the narrator, not knowing the context, but understanding
how life is for those who have been through the experience. The first story, 'The Quai at Smyrna' is representative of this theme, where the author
describes an ordinary day in the life of a soldier participating in the war. The context of the scene has not been defined in categorical terms, but it
can be speculated to be the scenario where the Turks and the American forces were working together. The narrator is the serving doctor of a ship
docked at Smyrna, in the midst of a scene where he is keeping check on the women prisoners of war. A lot of these women were pregnant, with many
among these, giving birth to dead children. There is a possibility that these women were raped by the conquering soldiers, and were impregnated, and
were continually assaulted sexually so that their babies died in their wombs. These women were not mentally stable, and the dead children made them
scream in agony.

Times Of Our Lives Analysis
Time Perception: Screen vs. Print
We are living in a time of increasingly fast technological advances. As we become more and more advanced, people are abandoning the physical hard
copy books for E–readers in increasingly large numbers. E–Readers have several advantages over physical books. To name a few, they are smaller and
lighter, can hold multiple books at a time, and can be backlit to help read in the dark. We are interested in looking at some perceptual differences
between when a person reads a book and when they read on an E–reader and more specifically, we want to measure whether an individual's perception
of time changes based on the medium in which they are receiving information. As technology proliferates throughout our daily lives, it would be
important to understand the effect it has on our perception of time. Studying this could help to understand the relationship between perceived time
when reading a physical material and perceived time reading on a screen, which could help us efficiently use our time.
In the reading, "Modern Perception of Time and Acceleration of the Pace of Life", the author's argument is that it is essential to pay more attention to

In the essay Our Time by John Edgar Wideman, Wideman is speaking on how he and his brother's life differ even though they grew up together. The
author utilizes many distinctive literary techniques such as personification, breaking the narrative, point of view, and a couple examples of diction.
One of the literary methods Wideman uses is personification. "My senses at times tingles and itch" (Wideman). Writers use personification to trigger
the emotions of the reader. It also makes sentences additionally fascinating. It allows the reader to connect with the author on a more personal level.

Our Time is one great example of an essay that exemplifies the use of different literary devices, which helps us as readers connect with him as a writer
even better.
John Edgar Widerman's Our Time addresses the controversial nature vs. nurture argument. This essay about John and his brother demonstrates how
nurture plays a stronger and bigger role than nature. Trying not to be a product of your environment is so detrimental in making it in life. There are
so many people blame their upbringing for the trouble they get in. Just because your mom or dad was not the richest people, or honest, or even if
they were in and out of jail, drunks, drug addicts or whatever. That does not mean you should follow in their footsteps. No matter what, us as children
should always strive to be better than our parents. No matter the pigmentation of your skin there will always be stereotypes. When some people see an
African American male with a t–shirt, jeans, and a pair of Jordan's on they might instantly think he is some type of thug or drug dealer. When some
people see a single mother no matter African American or Caucasian with more than four kids some may think that they the kids might not have the
same fathers. The crazy part is that the young African American male you see might be a doctor, a lawyer, or maybe the CEO of the company you
want to work for, the single mother you see might be widowed, or anything. One goal in life should to be never to fall into the stereotype of your race,

Byronic Hero In Mikhail Lermontov's A Hero Of Our Time
Whether he is being criticized or clarified, it is clear that Mikhail Lermontov in A Hero of Our Time is challenging the archetype of the Byronic hero.
Throughout the novel, Lermontov offers a commentary on the ideals of a Byronic hero in 19th century Russia and how it has become fashionable to
imitate qualities that were once scorned, especially when compared to the age–old ideals of the classic hero. The classical hero exhibited more
traditionally exalted traits: courage, sacrifice, bravery. This is in clear contrast with the contemporary traits the typical Byronic hero exhibited: an
enigmatic sense of danger, unpredictable selfishness, and an alluring hidden past full of tragedies. Lermontov takes advantage of this clear division
between the old and new ideals by juxtaposing Grushnitsky with Pechorin to outline some of the more tangible requirements of the Byronic Hero.
Simultaneously, he also uses Grushnitsky as a source of irony, in order to show that the "heroes" of 19th century Russia are in fact hollow images
based on status and misperceptions as opposed to Classical heroes prior to them.
In "Princess Mary," Lermontov reveals how the heroes of 19th century Russia exemplified Byronic traits to such an extent that they had become
fashionable to imitate. In A Hero of Our Time, Lermontov situates Grushnitsky as a foil to Pechorin to demonstrate how Pechorin serves as an example
of the typical Byronic Hero. There are several moments where the parallelism between

Masculinity, By William Faulkner And The Death Of A Man
Masculinity is a common theme in nearly all of Hemingway's works. What makes Indian Camp unique is that it is about a young boy earning his
masculinity, and all in one very eventful night. This story is about "becoming a man" so–to–speak, through enduring and overcoming two very difficult
situations to view: the birth of a child and the death of a man. Barn Burning covers the same theme in a darker and more violent way. In William
Faulkner's story, Sarty's father teaches him to become a man by teaching him that a man should hold his family's blood above anything and everything
else. The different ways this lesson is taught in these two stories are the key differences in how the main characters come to grasp the same basic ideal.
In Indian Camp, the protagonist, Nick, is put face–to–face with uncomfortable scenarios and finally is forced to endure and triumph over these
challenges, whereas Sarty does essentially the same thing, but instead of accepting the standards put before him, he overthrows them and accepts what
he believes masculinity should be.
During the time of writing Indian Camp, masculinity may have been intertwined with the notion that white men were the dominant people of the time.
This can be taken from when Nick asks his father if there is anything that can be given to the Indian woman in labor in order to make her quit
screaming, to which Nick's father replies "her screams are not important. I don't hear them because they are not important" (Hemingway, 16).

Nick's Self–Discovery in Hemingway's In Our Time
The focus of this essay will be to analyze Nick's transition as he moves from mental isolation, to physical isolation, to maturation and self–discovery.
If Nick's life were to be chronologically ordered and analyzed, the stories Indian Camp and The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife would definitely come
first. It is these two stories that give us the first insight to what kind of character that Nick really is as a child. Because Nick is only mentioned briefly
in the latter story, I think that Indian Camp is more significant in analyzing the portrayal of his character. I suppose the one passage that truly gives

The significance of the quote, "It isn't fun any more. Not any of it" (34) is the absence of emotion and meaning in his life. Obviously, the way in
which Nick "broke up" with Marjorie is that he was searching for something in life that was not yet to be found; not in her or, as it appears, anyone.
It is this "hollowness" that I think directly relates back to his relationship with his father and is the same lack of emotion that lead Nick to go to war
and to continue wandering by himself after he returns. It is this same emotion (or lack there of) that is apparent in The Three–Day Blow, as well.
Though he expresses some remorse over his break–up with Marge ("All he knew is that he had once had Marjorie and that he had lost her" (47)), I
truly believe that there was something else that deeply troubled Nick. It is in these two stories, however, that the reader can begin to infer that Nick,
though once a content child who would never die, is now searching for something in life, whether it be adequacy or meaning. Thus, these stories are
important because they show his maturation and make a preface for the events that follow.
The Battler seems to be the culmination of Nick's psuedo–depression that is sensed in the two stories before it. The reader can infer that, whether to
leave his parents, to seek meaning in life, or just for adventure, Nick has taken on the life of a

in Kansas. He was not out of place during that time. Hemingway says, "There is a picture which shows him among his fraternity brothers, all of
them wearing exactly the same height and style collar." (185) Hemingway is telling us that by stating that Harold once fit in the town. He fit in with
his friends. He is meaning in the story that most soldiers are traumatized by the war, and when they return they are different people. Hemingway gets

Public Speaking Interview Paper

  • 1. Public Speaking Interview Paper Amber Grijalva Public Speaking Interview Pamela Stovall I interviewed Durward "Durk" Lynch he is in my field of interest where I want to work as one day. He is a Nurse Practitioner at the Vanden Bosh Clinic and at the College Clinic. He gave information on his background and what drove him to be a Nurse Practitioner (NP). He really has had a lot of experience, as I will explain to you what he has shared. Durk was 18 years old graduating from high school and at the time he didn't have the goal or even thought to be a (NP). He was volunteering in a hospital working with paralyzed patients. He was in his 1st year of college and majoring in Psychology. He really had an interest in writing on health and disease. He used to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only time he had to talk in front of people was at a commencement ceremony. He doesn't really like to talk in front of a huge crowd. The last question I asked was how important to success in your career is effective public speaking? He stated, "Public speaking is not a big event in my career. It's not really what I do maybe I shy away from it. In my career I only talk one on one with my patients and there family. Everything I discuss with my patients is private and confidential. So therefore I don't need to really give a speech among a crowd." I really enjoyed the interview listening to his experience and made me want to strive even more to become a good Nurse Practitioner. His words were really helpful and he gave me helpful tips on what route to take to get to my career goals. I thanked him for his time and thanked him for the helpful advice. That was my interview that I chose to talk about according to my field I am interested ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Our Time Wideman Summary Do you have any idea how draining it is to be black in America? Rich or poor, educated or uneducated, famous or anonymous? Do you know what it feels like to be classified as ghetto and lazy because you come from or live in the hood? Better yet have you ever been called "white washed" because you seek a higher education, and are able to actually hold a conversation without saying the word "umm" in every other sentence? Do you have any idea? I do. Not everyone is a direct result of their environment and bad choices. In the essay "Our Time" Wideman questions the idea of black life in America and uses both he and his brother's story to explain how the choices we make in life are not always easy, and how sometimes others may not always understand the reasons behind them. Throughout the essay he uses the voices of his brother Robby, His mother, and Himself to express and convey the different perspectives through Robby's eyes. Widemen has to look past his own views... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout Our Time there are several examples in which the voices of the different characters change. Widemen frequently interrupts this narrative to talk about the problems he is having as a writer. "The hardest habit to break, since it was the habit of a lifetime, would be listening to myself listen to him. That habit would destroy any chance of seeing my brother on his terms; and seeing him in his terms, learning his terms, seemed the whole point of learning his story. (p. 437) He also praises his mother's remarkable capacity for she says is "trying on the other person's point of view." He talks about Robby and how different memories of him confirm some of his actions, "won't take me no time to rob something, we stone thieves."(p. 452) One of the main focus of the story is how the family dealt with the resentment towards the ... • 3. Our Time Essay Alex Leen 9/5/12 English 110, 11:00 Final Draft of paper 1 In the essay "Our Time" by John Edgar Wideman he often takes a break from the narrative to address that he has many problems as a writer. He does this to try to consciously address these problems and hopefully solve these problems. He believes that if these problems are not rectified he would destroy any chance he has at telling a truthful account of his brother's story. To rectify these problems he employs a variety of unique techniques in his writing. Looking at these techniques it is not always 100% clear how these are fixing his problems. It is also evident that the way he is writing may be going against a lot of things we were taught in school about our writing. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first of the three is Garth's death. When Garth died he lost his best friend, one of the few people that he truly loved. After Garth died Robby got big into drugs, I think its cause he was depressed after the loss and wanted to forget. It was a major turning point in Robby's life and in my opinion the most important of the three events that could have started the story. The second one is his own birth. People may wonder why this wouldn't be the logical starting point seeing as how it's his birth and makes sense chronologically. The reason this can be seen as starting point of his troubles isn't because he was born so it could happen as you'd probably think. It's because for as long as he could remember his birthday was overshadowed. It was right after Christmas so it always felt a little insignificant compared to the biggest holiday of the year. There were also the unfortunate events of death that seemed to follow his birthday around like a cloud. All of his Grandparents died near his birthday and that has to take a toll on you. To have your birthday associated with the deaths of loved ones must be extremely hard. The third and final possible starting point is his childhood home in Shadyside. Nothing particularly traumatizing happened in this passage but it's still important none the less. In this he talks about how he grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood. He was around white people all the time and felt that they had it easier than him. Also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay about Discusses the Reliability of Specific Narrators Discuss the reliability or otherwise of specific narrators employed in the texts that you have studied on this module. When discussing the reliability of specific narrators within a text there is a need to look at the consistency of the narrators and also their trustworthiness. It is also important to assess how the author has used the narrators within a novel and to what extent this use has on a readers view of reliability. The novelsHeart of Darkness By Joseph Conrad and A Hero of Our Time By Mikhail Lermontov both contain more than one narrator. Heart of Darkness has two narrators, an anonymous passenger on a pleasure ship who listens to Marlow's story and Marlow himself. The first narrator speaks in the first person plural on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is the reader who has to decide on many occasions whether Marlow's opinions are close to the truth or way off. The reader may find it easy to trust Marlow's opinions and also what he says because of how the story is told to them. Heart of Darkness is framed by the narration of another nameless observer (which could quite easily be them). As a result, Marlow's whole story appears enclosed in quotation marks. One reason for this may be that the reader feels as if he/she is hearing the tale as well. Having Marlow in front of us on the Nellie, we feel the immediacy of his speaking voice and the actual sensation of a sailor spinning a yarn before us. If Conrad had written the whole novel in the first person, getting rid of the primary narrator, he would have needed to leave out Marlow's hesitations and digressions, which are important to the style of the novel. We would also miss the feeling that Marlow was working out the meaning of his tale as he went along and that he trusts us to be a part of that process. A writer, unlike a speaker usually has things worked out in their head before hand. This working out of things alongside the reader could be seen as a sign of reliability because it could be said that Marlow is trying hard to be truthful so he can work out a correct meaning. He would come to false conclusions if he did not use the truth to get there. Conrad lets us experience Marlow's sensations along with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Great War Of Our Time The Great War of Our Time was a pleasure to read. It was an emotional ride for me throughout the entire book. It made me laugh out loud; giggle to myself, tear up, become upset and sometimes it caused a pleasant grin to grow across my face. From the beginning of this book to the very last page, I thought was an easy read. He starts the book off talking about the three primary missions of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA): collecting secrets clandestinely, conducting all–source analysis for the president and his senior advisors, and undertaking actions covertly to further US foreign policy objectives. With this being the agency's mission statement so to speak, I was very surprised to read how it was a competition within the agency although the entire agency is suppose to be working toward one common cause, one common goal. Alec Station, arguably one of the most important CIA operational units at the time was led by an officer who was not a trained operations officer. I agreed with Morell when he basically said that he found that to be strange. Why wouldn't the CIA have put an experienced trained operations office as lead on this particular operational unit? After all, it was created to follow Bin Ladin. Another question that I had was, again, here we have an operational unit whose sole job is to follow Bin Ladin but the agency does not give the support that is needed by Alec Station to conduct its job properly. This situation brought to light for me why the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Mikhail Lermontov's A Hero Of Our Time Mikhail Lermontov's 'A Hero of our Time' is set in the 1840s, a crucial time in Russian history. Pechorin was a revolutionary character in Russian literature due to his cynical and amoral personality that alienates him from all social strata. 'A Hero of our Time' generated a large amount of outrage from the public due to Lermontov, claiming Pechorin to be the 'hero' of our its time. 'Bela' is a framed narrative portrayed from the views of an old friend, Maxim Maximych, however, the story told by Maxim Maximych suggests it is an unjust and biased view of our 'hero' thus we as readers are to depict the true 'hero' Pechorin is. Examining the chapter 'Bela,' his actions signify his capability to damage a society, demonstrating him to be the callous and manipulative character he is. The first instance we see our 'hero's' destructive instincts is when he meets Bela. Despite his high level of intelligence, he acts very much on instinct. Having met Bela on the night of 'her eldest sister's wedding,' his response was "Enchanting!". His concern isn't that she's the daughter of the chief but rather it's her physical appearance that preoccupies him. This meeting with Bela brings out Pechorin's impulsive nature. As he overhears a conversation between Azamat and Kazbich, with the former making an offer:"If you want, I'll steal my sister for you... no–one has seen such a wife..." the two characters are in negotiation over the price of Azamat's sister, 'for your Karagyoz...I'll steal my sister ... • 7. Time In The Play Our Town If a book were to tell someone's life, how could you tell if it was the next day or the next year? Usually authors have different strategies to give readers an idea of how much time has passed. However, this is especially harder in plays because the perception of time to readers is mainly dependent on the verbal script of the characters. In the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder, his usage of the concept oftime is incorporated by major life events such as their life as children, the wedding and a funeral with the help of the stage manager and the title of the acts. To begin with the play is essentially about the lives of two neighboring families, the title of the first act "Daily lives" is appropriate and telling of the beginning of the play. In the beginning of Act one it basically introduces the readers to the characters . The families are getting their kids ready for school and the mothers meet with each other. The use of school and their morning routine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The major life events are summed up that way because that's what life in the town consisted of growing up, getting married then die. The play on time by the author truly shows how many take their time alive for granted and how quickly it goes by. Such as when she chose to relive a day and she noticed how everyone wasn't really taking everything in and enjoying themselves. The stage manager was the key tool in translating the authors perspective of time to the readers and the acts being few kind of shows how quickly and empty her life was. In a nutshell she was just a young girl, then got married and died. The message I personally got from the play was to live life to the fullest because I personally wouldn't want three relatively short acts to describe my life from start to ... • 8. Analysis Of Soldiers Home By Ernest Hemingway Soldiers Home "It's a funny thing coming home. Nothing changes. Everything looks the same, feels the same, even smells the same. You realize what's changed is you." – F. Scott Fitzgerald The devastating imagery soldiers witness in everyday life is stuck with them, and those memories eventually come to the surface. There's nothing half as appreciable as coming home again. The short story presents the homecoming of an outcasted soldier following the war. Krebs, Hemingway's main character, experiences frequent lonely sensations as he concludes that he, and the young girls that had grown up were the only things that had changed in the town of Oklahoma when returning. The noticeable difference between the members of armed forces returning from overseas duty and those who remained home creates an immense conflict in the story. That is, as it lies, the fraud that is demanded for survival. In "Soldier's Home", Ernest Hemingway, the author develops a distaste for everything that had happened to Krebs in the war; which may well be a deliberation of, though not restricted to, the livelihood being taken from soldiers today, coming home from war. Hemingway reveals the short story through a narrator's voice. The narrator is not necessarily a bystander, as he recognizes, for the most part, that the war stripped the soul from Krebs. It is made clear that Hemingway understands more than what can be physically observed about Krebs, as his feelings are thoroughly detailed throughout. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. In Our Time Critical Analysis Nick's Psychological Development in Ernest Hemingway's In Our Time In Hemingway's collection of short stories, In Our Time, we follow a character by the name of Nick Adams. We are introduced to Nick in "Indian Camp" as a young boy, and follow him to adulthood in both Parts I and II of "Big Two–Hearted River". Through this we see Nick develop and learn about some major facts of life. Nick is a character who is changes through the effects of war on many different levels. This shows that due to Nick's past, he is not ready for relationships with women. He does not want to live his life in the traditional manner that Marjorie expects him to. Due to his lack of development, he cannot communicate and commit at this point in his life. It is also significant that the fish they are trying to catch will not bite onto the line. This signifies Nick trying to tell Marjorie that now is not a time for commitment. He does not want to get married, settle down, and give up his masculine life. The next interaction Nick has is with his friend Bill in "The Three Day Blow". The two spend the entire time drinking while Nick questions his decision to break up with Marjorie. "The Three–Day Blow" can also represent a time in Nick's life when only the most important things in his life are necessary. For Nick and Bill, the important thing to remain is their masculinity, including their love of sports. For him to become a tough, manly man, Nick needs to "blow" his emotions about Marjorie out of his system. Bill tries to convince Nick that he made the right decision in not wanting to get married. This is Nick's struggle to decide if he wants to be a "man's man", or a "family man". He is trying to decide what type of person he wants to become, and whether that life includes marriage, love, and domesticity. Instead of continuing to think this through, Nick and Bill ... • 10. Our Time Is Up Analysis The central aspects of documenting everyday life into a narrative that holds purpose and yet leaves the audience with a resounding message is the essence of what a short film attempts to accomplish. Film connects the two paradigms of visual and emotional appeal, while still capturing what it means to be human. From the monotonous to the exorbitant interior of the seemingly intricate parts that ultimately create the sum of our lives, the subject of death in of its parts, is insensitive to the narratives that we place on ourselves. The affair of death within its incomparable and obstinate state of the absolute is portrayed in a thoughtful way in short film "Our Time Is Up" by Rob Pearlstein, where a psychologist named Dr. Stern finds out he only has six weeks to live. The attentive matter that is due in part of death is depicted in an unconventional way in which engages the audience in a relatable and humorous way through the different yet personalized perspective of the characters in "Our Time Is Up". • 11. Summary Of Ernest Hemingway'sBig Two Hearted River Part 1 Response 1 Ernest Hemingway's "Big Two Hearted River Part 1" appears as simple tale of a man going camping. It talks about his journey through a burnt area of land. He ultimately sets up camp, has some fond memories of a friend, and then he goes to sleep. However the story, in my opinion, has a much deeper meaning. Everything that happens in the story has a reason behind it being mentioned. Hemingway, I believe, shows Nick's growth through analogies that often fly over the reader's head, including the transition from the burnt town to the river, the river conditions, and the trouts' movement in the river and the sooty appearance of the grasshoppers. Hemingway sets the location for the story as soon as Nick gets off the train "There was no town, nothing but the rails and the burned–over country. The thirteen saloons that had lined the one street of Seney had not left a trace" ( 133). A town that was once booming with people had been burnt down. Why did Hemingway point out the destroyed town? It would appear that the focal point would be the town, but Hemingway quickly transitions into Nick going to a river. As the story says, "Nick looked at the burned–over stretch of hillside, where he had expected to find the scattered houses of the town and then walked down the railroad track to the bridge over the river. The river was there" (133). He sets the reader up by talking about a once great town now being burnt to a crisp. The idea here is to have the reader thinking "man, all these people have lost their home." Despite this, it is clear that the town being burnt down is not the most important thing. Hemingway could have easily told a story about the town; instead he quickly moved onto the river. The river is a very important and recurring piece of the story. When Hemingway says, "Nick looked down into the clear, brown water, colored from the pebbly bottom" (133), Notice how he talks about water being brown–colored from the pebbles. It's clear that the water has changed due to the fire. Despite the changes, the fish were still doing just fine. Hemingway seems to drive home this point as he mentions, " It was a long long time since Nick had looked into a stream and seen trout. They were very satisfactory. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Overall, I enjoyed the novels, the lectures, and brief Russian history very much. There's a reason I never missed a class–I liked going. However, the attendance and participation was not ideal. It actually really pissed me off. Not your fault–I understand where you're coming from with having attendance not a priority, especially due to health. But it does suck when students take advantage. Yes, people get sick. Though, when students say they are simply "too busy," I don't buy it. It's a ridiculous excuse. We have a lot of time during the day. "This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen" by Tadeusz Borowski has been one of those types. A heart–wrenching short story and I hate that I love it. Why do we like reading about the past that's gone? More importantly, a past so horrific and cruel, then created into a fiction to please our curiosity of what we will never understand? • 13. In Our Time by Ernest Hemingway In Our Time, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a collection of short stories that were published in 1925 and defined Hemingway's writing style from there on. As a symbolic image of Hemingway himself, Nick Adams is faced with troubling relationships that ultimately define who he is. Life experiences from young to old define show how Nick lives his love before, during, and after World War One. These experiences strengthen his relationships, maturity, and masculinity. One of the most important themes, masculinity, is portrayed directly at the start of Hemingway'sshort story collection starting with "Indian Camp." In the first short story the reader sees the novels protagonist, Nick Adams', "response to violence and suffering inflicted on others will ultimately define his own sense of masculinity" (Frazier). Witnessing this dramatic event at such a young age will define Nick's life and change the way he views certain aspects of life just from watching a woman give birth. Nick's maturity and responsibility are also themes that are greatly exploited just as well as his masculinity. The reader first learns about Nick and his relationships with his girlfriend Marjorie in the short story titled "The End of Something." Also, Christian Science religion does not believe in medicine, which means that she has no respect for her husband's work. Nick's father decides to go hunting, where he can express his masculinity. When Nick decides to go with him, Nick is also showing an interest in male to male interaction over male to female interaction with his mother. We see Nick at the end of the story, still calling his father "daddy" and wanting to follow him around. If the family would interact more, then it is probable that Nick would be able to develop more psychologically. He is still being treated like a little child, so he is still acting like one. We next see Nick and his reactions to relationships. In "The End of Something" Nick breaks up with his girlfriend Marjorie. He expresses to her that he is bored with his life and that they cannot stay together. This shows that due to Nick's past, he is not ready for relationships with women. However as Grushnitsky stands just six paces from the unarmed Pechorin, he loses his resolve to kill and exclaims, "I can't do it"(Lermontov 123). Yet he turns back toward Pechorin and fires capriciously, merely grazing Pechorin's knee and causing him no harm. Knowing that Grushnitsky's second did not load his pistol, Pechorin has the pistol loaded and proceeds to kill the unrepentant Grushnitsky. Chance and Coincidence are thus used by Lermontov as the mode of expression of Fate in "Princess Mary." It was not fated for Pechorin to die at the hand of Grushnitsky, thus chance compelled Grushnitsky to lose his will to kill Pechorin. Additionally, chance causes Grushnitsky's random shot at Pechorin to merely graze Pechorin's leg. Because Pechorin was not predestined to die in this duel, everything unfolded precisely the way it needed to in order to insure Pechorin's continued well–being. Conversely, the events of the duel occurred in such a way that assured Grushnitsky's death, illustrating his predestination to die during the duel. I do not hold the belief that a person is incapable of changing – with the exception of a certain type of person – and those who refuse to make the necessary changes are little better then a coward who runs from an engagement with the enemy. It is not logical behavior to inflict misery upon oneself, without that misery being in the service of a higher ideal, and even then, it still runs contrary to the natural instinct for survival. The fact that a very substantial portion of the populace engages in this very sort of illogical behavior does not constitute a defense for Pechorin, nor does it make the behavior reasoned and logical. Essentially, not every foreigner that comes to the U.S is prepared to handle the stress that comes with communicating with one another, that can be experienced as a result of not knowing enough of the language to speak English and be understood. This problem is presented, creating multiple obstacles for a newcomer to achieve their goals, either to obtain a good job to support their family or hoping the money in the United States is better than what they earned in their original country. But because many lack the skill to communicate with others, people who speak fluently English may get frustrated with those who can't connect or have difficulty understanding what one is trying to get across to the other, decreasing the chance of the migratory to be granted a job, able to ace a job interview, open opportunities to find a home, make friends or even struggle with great difficulty getting the information they need. Struggling with their fluency will impact dramatically their self–esteem, causing one to feel ashamed and afraid due to them knowing they don't have the ease of speaking freely their broken English without being laughed at or criticized. Furthermore, another disadvantage new settlers have is the insufficiency of transportation. When families come in a hurry to the U.S, it's highly likely almost every newcomer doesn't have someone or a way to transit from one location to another. Therefore, Nick isolates himself in the wilderness upon returning. The reader experiences Nick's post–war mentality, and sees the struggles Nick faces with anxiety about the unknown. It is clear that Nick's journey represents the modernist search for individuality in the midst of a broken society. While alone by the water, Nick witnesses a trout. Although it is just a simple trout, the way in which it moves provides a strong sense of meaning: A big trout shot upstream in a long angle, only his shadow marking the angle, then lost his shadow as he came through the surface of the water, caught the sun, and then, as he went back into the stream under the surface, his shadow seemed to float down the stream with the current, unresisting, to his post under the bridge where he tightened facing up into the current. It is set as real life is set, in a realm of disjointed events, that make sense overall, but for an outsider looking in, they are confusing and disconnected. The main theme in this book is that of individual experience, which is written as if the reader was looking through the eyes of the narrator, not knowing the context, but understanding how life is for those who have been through the experience. The first story, 'The Quai at Smyrna' is representative of this theme, where the author describes an ordinary day in the life of a soldier participating in the war. The context of the scene has not been defined in categorical terms, but it can be speculated to be the scenario where the Turks and the American forces were working together. The narrator is the serving doctor of a ship docked at Smyrna, in the midst of a scene where he is keeping check on the women prisoners of war. A lot of these women were pregnant, with many among these, giving birth to dead children. There is a possibility that these women were raped by the conquering soldiers, and were impregnated, and were continually assaulted sexually so that their babies died in their wombs. These women were not mentally stable, and the dead children made them scream in agony. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Times Of Our Lives Analysis Time Perception: Screen vs. Print We are living in a time of increasingly fast technological advances. As we become more and more advanced, people are abandoning the physical hard copy books for E–readers in increasingly large numbers. E–Readers have several advantages over physical books. To name a few, they are smaller and lighter, can hold multiple books at a time, and can be backlit to help read in the dark. We are interested in looking at some perceptual differences between when a person reads a book and when they read on an E–reader and more specifically, we want to measure whether an individual's perception of time changes based on the medium in which they are receiving information. As technology proliferates throughout our daily lives, it would be important to understand the effect it has on our perception of time. Studying this could help to understand the relationship between perceived time when reading a physical material and perceived time reading on a screen, which could help us efficiently use our time. In the reading, "Modern Perception of Time and Acceleration of the Pace of Life", the author's argument is that it is essential to pay more attention to the influence of ongoing changes on the life and activity of an individual, on the ... • 33. Our Time John Wideman Analysis In the essay Our Time by John Edgar Wideman, Wideman is speaking on how he and his brother's life differ even though they grew up together. The author utilizes many distinctive literary techniques such as personification, breaking the narrative, point of view, and a couple examples of diction. One of the literary methods Wideman uses is personification. "My senses at times tingles and itch" (Wideman). Writers use personification to trigger the emotions of the reader. It also makes sentences additionally fascinating. It allows the reader to connect with the author on a more personal level. The example I utilized gives the reader a decent example of how Wideman gave human like actions to his senses because that is how much his outlook on life... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Our Time is one great example of an essay that exemplifies the use of different literary devices, which helps us as readers connect with him as a writer even better. John Edgar Widerman's Our Time addresses the controversial nature vs. nurture argument. This essay about John and his brother demonstrates how nurture plays a stronger and bigger role than nature. Trying not to be a product of your environment is so detrimental in making it in life. There are so many people blame their upbringing for the trouble they get in. Just because your mom or dad was not the richest people, or honest, or even if they were in and out of jail, drunks, drug addicts or whatever. That does not mean you should follow in their footsteps. No matter what, us as children should always strive to be better than our parents. No matter the pigmentation of your skin there will always be stereotypes. When some people see an African American male with a t–shirt, jeans, and a pair of Jordan's on they might instantly think he is some type of thug or drug dealer. When some people see a single mother no matter African American or Caucasian with more than four kids some may think that they the kids might not have the same fathers. The crazy part is that the young African American male you see might be a doctor, a lawyer, or maybe the CEO of the company you want to work for, the single mother you see might be widowed, or anything. One goal in life should to be never to fall into the stereotype of your race, gender, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Byronic Hero In Mikhail Lermontov's A Hero Of Our Time Whether he is being criticized or clarified, it is clear that Mikhail Lermontov in A Hero of Our Time is challenging the archetype of the Byronic hero. Throughout the novel, Lermontov offers a commentary on the ideals of a Byronic hero in 19th century Russia and how it has become fashionable to imitate qualities that were once scorned, especially when compared to the age–old ideals of the classic hero. The classical hero exhibited more traditionally exalted traits: courage, sacrifice, bravery. This is in clear contrast with the contemporary traits the typical Byronic hero exhibited: an enigmatic sense of danger, unpredictable selfishness, and an alluring hidden past full of tragedies. Lermontov takes advantage of this clear division between the old and new ideals by juxtaposing Grushnitsky with Pechorin to outline some of the more tangible requirements of the Byronic Hero. Simultaneously, he also uses Grushnitsky as a source of irony, in order to show that the "heroes" of 19th century Russia are in fact hollow images based on status and misperceptions as opposed to Classical heroes prior to them. In "Princess Mary," Lermontov reveals how the heroes of 19th century Russia exemplified Byronic traits to such an extent that they had become fashionable to imitate. In A Hero of Our Time, Lermontov situates Grushnitsky as a foil to Pechorin to demonstrate how Pechorin serves as an example of the typical Byronic Hero. There are several moments where the parallelism between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Masculinity, By William Faulkner And The Death Of A Man Masculinity is a common theme in nearly all of Hemingway's works. What makes Indian Camp unique is that it is about a young boy earning his masculinity, and all in one very eventful night. This story is about "becoming a man" so–to–speak, through enduring and overcoming two very difficult situations to view: the birth of a child and the death of a man. Barn Burning covers the same theme in a darker and more violent way. In William Faulkner's story, Sarty's father teaches him to become a man by teaching him that a man should hold his family's blood above anything and everything else. The different ways this lesson is taught in these two stories are the key differences in how the main characters come to grasp the same basic ideal. In Indian Camp, the protagonist, Nick, is put face–to–face with uncomfortable scenarios and finally is forced to endure and triumph over these challenges, whereas Sarty does essentially the same thing, but instead of accepting the standards put before him, he overthrows them and accepts what he believes masculinity should be. During the time of writing Indian Camp, masculinity may have been intertwined with the notion that white men were the dominant people of the time. This can be taken from when Nick asks his father if there is anything that can be given to the Indian woman in labor in order to make her quit screaming, to which Nick's father replies "her screams are not important. I don't hear them because they are not important" (Hemingway, 16). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Essay Nick's Self-Discovery in Hemingway's In Our Time Nick's Self–Discovery in Hemingway's In Our Time The focus of this essay will be to analyze Nick's transition as he moves from mental isolation, to physical isolation, to maturation and self–discovery. If Nick's life were to be chronologically ordered and analyzed, the stories Indian Camp and The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife would definitely come first. It is these two stories that give us the first insight to what kind of character that Nick really is as a child. Because Nick is only mentioned briefly in the latter story, I think that Indian Camp is more significant in analyzing the portrayal of his character. I suppose the one passage that truly gives insight about the innocence (and ignorance) of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The significance of the quote, "It isn't fun any more. Not any of it" (34) is the absence of emotion and meaning in his life. Obviously, the way in which Nick "broke up" with Marjorie is that he was searching for something in life that was not yet to be found; not in her or, as it appears, anyone. It is this "hollowness" that I think directly relates back to his relationship with his father and is the same lack of emotion that lead Nick to go to war and to continue wandering by himself after he returns. It is this same emotion (or lack there of) that is apparent in The Three–Day Blow, as well. Though he expresses some remorse over his break–up with Marge ("All he knew is that he had once had Marjorie and that he had lost her" (47)), I truly believe that there was something else that deeply troubled Nick. It is in these two stories, however, that the reader can begin to infer that Nick, though once a content child who would never die, is now searching for something in life, whether it be adequacy or meaning. Thus, these stories are important because they show his maturation and make a preface for the events that follow. The Battler seems to be the culmination of Nick's psuedo–depression that is sensed in the two stories before it. The reader can infer that, whether to leave his parents, to seek meaning in life, or just for adventure, Nick has taken on the life of a

We've built and moved into a new facility, been awarded a new staffing contract, seen people come and go, and transitioned over to an electronic health record. It prides me that we have been a model for growth and development. Many of you exemplify positive values that I believe make our work worthwhile. During our time together, I have advocated on your behalf and made decisions with focus toward what is best for our future and for this agency. We all recognize that change comes at a cost and that at each crossroad we have the opportunity to determine which road to follow. We can accept challenges, making them work to our benefit, or we can resist progress. For me personally, and as you probably have seen, I choose not to be held hostage by those who thwart efforts to maintain a positive and rewarding work environment. This said I also do my best to give others the benefit of the doubt, with hopes that others do the same in return. I have done this for many of you regardless of opinions or differing views and suggestions. Some of you can vouch for this as it has been at the expense of your own frustration.
