End Of History Essay
Name: Peter Reddaway ID: 14135766. Paper: 200161 Question: Will there ever be an 'End of History'? Is it possible for there to ever be an 'End of
History'? While it certainly isn't impossible it's very unlikely. But to assess the likelihood of it occurring first, we must ascertain exactly what that
entails. There are several theories, the first of which comes from a French philosopher named Antoine–Augustin Cournot. His definition being "to refer
to the end of the historical dynamic with the perfection of civil society" (Mike Featherstone, "Global and Local Cultures", in John Bird, Barry Curtis,
Tim Putnam, Mapping the Futures: Local Cultures, Global Change (1993)) His definition is by far the broadest. Marx, however, theorised that the

Without this men, women and transgender people will forever live in a sense of competition, instead of working in sync. Without this, the unity
of people cannot fully be realized. In order to rectify this, we need to conceptualise gender as a social structure, this will allow us to better analyse
how individuals are affected by their gender and how this affects society as a whole. To conceptualise gender as a structure situates gender at the
same level of general social significance as the economy and the polity. Risman, B. J. (2004). To conclude, the 'End of History' is a difficult
concept to define. Many different ideologies interpret it differently and it's hard to say which is more likely. In the end I tend to think of the 'End
of History' as a time of complete equality with an excellent rate of education and standard of living. Due to low instances of hatred toward people of
different class, gender and faith. With Religion's sharper points dulled down and woven in to the political system and education as a base for social
improvement it may just be possible to advance to a point in which the 'End of History' is considered the

In 1989, Francis Fukuyama published "the End of History?" on the National Interest. Throughout the article, he attempted to account for the global
changes in the post–Cold War era including the ideological transformation of the Soviet Union by introducing a new idea of 'the end of history'. To
Fukuyama, this idea signified the main ground for the turbulence and the systematic reformation. His argument that the history will no longer evolve
has two main significations. First, the ideas or ideologies humans developed throughout the history reached their end points. The victory of the west
meant that there was no other alternative ideology to substitute for liberal democracy. Second, the western liberal democracy will be universalised as it

Therefore, Fukuyama tries to answer this question by introducing the "search for recognition." (Fukuyama, 1993) Fukuyama utilises concepts such as
'megalothymia' and 'isothymia' which root from a Greek word, 'thymos.' (1993, p. 182) The former refers to a desire to be recognised by having a
superior power or ability whereas the latter refers to the same but by maintaining the equal power or status as others. He states that other than the basic
needs of human, there is the quest for recognition that work as a source of motivation. The reason why the desire for domination arises is because the
mankind wants to satisfy the desire for recognition. Thus, the modern society is a by–product of history driven by the search for recognition, and that
is how modern capitalism came into existence. (Fukuyama, 1993) If so, the question of why capitalist society must conclude into liberal democratic
political system remains, and this is the core of Fukuyama's thesis. The rationale behind this is that liberal democracy is the only ideology that
satisfies the desire to be recognised. The history of mankind started off from the desire to dominate of 'megalothymia', and ended in the state of
'isothymia' when liberal democracy finally arrived. Hence, by satisfying the humanity's most crucial desire, the chance of progress of social ideology
will be seized, and the

English Commentary on Frankenstein
Isolation in Frankenstein This passage is taken from page 119 of chapter 19 in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Closing in on the ending of the novel, this
passage explores the self–reflecting state of Frankenstein's mind when in isolation on the Islands of Orkney. Fear arises as a critical emotion that
strikes him during his time spent on his creation. After visiting Edinburgh and a number of other cities, Frankenstein leaves his friend Henry Clerval
and settles in a remote part of the Scottish countryside to finish the work of creating a partner for the monster. He commences his new creation driven
by his fear of the monster. However, although Frankenstein has agreed to the task, he detests his work and begins to doubt the ... Show more content on

At that time, his desperate thirst of knowledge and desire for creation blocked out the visual horrors that were present around him; they went unnoticed.
This time around however, he explains "I went to it in cold blood, and my heart often sickened at the work of my hands" (Shelly 119). Contrasting to
his first experiment, the enthusiasm that there once was, is now shrouded by fear and sickness of his creation. Frankenstein now indicates negative
perceptions towards experimentation and creation of life, mostly due to the revolting nature of the monster he had created.
Furthermore, we can see him criticise his job by depicting it as a "filthy process" (Shelly 119) and "the most detestable occupation" (Shelly 120). The
diction used here suggests that what he once craved is now believed to be repulsive and disgusting. His negativity towards his work gives the
impression of a serious and sombre tone that displays the bothered nature in his thoughts. The tone darkens into a feeling of deep despair once
Frankenstein expresses his fear towards the monster. He describes his spirits as unequal and he is growing restless and nervous. Just with the mention
of the monster can strike uneasy feelings into him, emphasizing the depressive features of the tone.
Shelley emphasizes the word "fear" many times; she writes "I feared to meet my persecutor. Sometimes I sat with my eyes fixed on the ground, fearing
to raise them"

Lord Of The Flies Man Vs Society Analysis
Lord of the Flies Man vs Society, Man vs Man, and Man vs nature Illustrate Humanity
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a novel where man is fending for survival. Boys are aground on an island at the time of a war. The two
main characters Jack and Ralph, who represent civilisation and barbarism, have a strong conflict. This has an effect on the rest of the boys throughout
the book. All of the boys slowly turn into savages further into the story. Close to the end of the book Jack states "And the conch doesn't count at this
end of the island." pg. 186 When Jack says this, it represents that he does not want rules. Jack is a savage and he refuses to be civil and organized. In the
novel, The lord of the Flies, by William Golding the conflict man vs. society, man vs. man, and man vs. nature illustrate humanity. One major
conflict in The Lord of the Flies is man vs. society. Ralph is good for the island society because he concluded there need to be rules and order so
that the boys stay balanced and are concentrated on getting recaptured. " The rules! 'Shouted Ralph' You're breaking the rules!" pg. 130 Ralph is
fighting for civilization, he is trying to make everything is coordinated, all he wants is for all of them to get rescued. Society need rules in order
to be civil, because if everyone was not civil, the world would be turbulent. Ralph is the leader of the "tribe". When Jack separated from the group
and made his own tribe it all became crazy. Jack's group was chaotic; however, they did know how to hunt and they had the ability to start a fire
because of Piggy's specs. One boy states, "We did everything adults would do, what went wrong" (Golding). When boys from Ralph's tribe decided to
leave and start their own clan then everything started becoming chaotic. If they all would have stayed together they would have had trouble getting
along but at least it wouldn't be hectic. Ralph did the best he could trying to keep everyone from going insane. Ralph represents humanity, and jack
represents savagery.
Piggy has an external conflict with jack in the novel. Jack is bully's piggy; therefore, piggy has a controversy standing up for something's he would
like to say. For example, piggy states " I

The End Of History
Post–World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union were the two poles of the bipolar world; the two most powerful nations at that time. From
a neorealist's point of view, bipolarity is the ideal case scenario since both the superpowers will have fear of each other and hence there would be less
international conflicts. However, the Cold War failed to prove this point. The US (a capitalist state) and the Soviet Union (a communist state) had
conflicting beliefs about government and economics; hence, the disagreements led to the Cold War. The Cold War is believed to have lasted from
1947–1991, a span of 44 years with the Soviet Union eventually being dissolved. The war had long term effects in the years to come and different

Francis Fukuyama, another political scientist, reflected that human nature strives for supremacy and recognition, which eventually leads to conflicts
between different governances. Francis Fukuyama, the author of the book, "The End of History", considered that humans tend to move their lives
towards an end point; which in post–Cold War scenario was to eliminate communism and assert liberal democracy as the universal model of
governance. After the Cold War, communism had been overcome by democracy and hence, according to him, the history had come to an end. He also
believes that China has an efficient authoritarian centralized system with no constraint or checks and balances. This system can outperform democracy
in the short run because decisions can be made quickly hence better for investment and growth. However, the US and WesternEurope have lots of
checks and balances hence, decisions on impending plans cannot be made immediately. The question now is which system is more sustainable going
forward? He thinks that checks and balances and democracy is superior in the long run because you need to have good leadership and the right
leaders for a liberal system to be implemented properly. After all, he believed that the only form of government across the globe will eventually be
liberal democracy. I consider Fukuyama's deduction that we have reached the "End of History" as premature at this point in history. Former British
Prime–Minister, Margaret Thatcher, stated: "End of history? Beginning of nonsense." After 1990, since the end of Cold War, there have been several
wars and genocides, 9/11 attacks, the emergence of ISIS; all disproving Fukuyama's

The Use Of Diction In Oedipus The King
King uses controlling diction and animalizes Jack to illustrate his anxiety in dealing with the resurgence of the wasps, further characterizing Jack as an
unstable man who threatens his family's wellbeing through his lack of stereotypical masculinity. King animalizes Jack by constantly comparing his
behavior with that of a tiger, a stereotypically savage wild animal, indifferent to the emotions of the persons surrounding them. Through Jack's response
to the rediscovery of wasps in Danny's room, King reinforces Jack's animalistic state of mind, as illustrated in his explosive reaction, " 'Shut the fuck
up and kill them!' he roared" (King 133). By having Jack roar out in retaliation to the wasps, King draws a parallel between the behavior of ... Show

As opposed to a relaxed, more "manly" reaction to his son being swarmed by wasps, Jack immediately panics in the face of danger and fails to
keep his outer shell of masculinity on in such a high stress period of time. He screams out commands at his wife, " 'Kill them!'...'Will you do what
I say!' " (King 133), and fails to deal with the problem himself, as he quickly abandons Wendy and Danny inside the bedroom, leaving Wendy to
settle the wasp situation on her own. By implementing this commanding diction, King fully strips Jack of his masculinity, and reveals his true
character as a deranged danger to the welfare of his family. In addition to illustrating Jack's severe lack of stereotypically "manly" traits, controlling
diction is also used by King to expose a authority seeking facet of Jack's personality that is ultimately broken down by the reappearance of the wasps.
As displayed through Jack ordering his wife, Jack is throwing together a last–ditch effort to maintain control over his family, as a "real man" would.
Instead of holding a level of authority over his family through ordering phrases such as "get a

Some films make an impression on our lives that last forever, award winning film Room directed by Lenny Abrahamson, is one of those films. In
Room a young woman named Joy is locked and hidden away in a shed with her five–year–old son Jack. Joy was locked in what her and her son call

very well thought out plot, but an even more well thought out composition. The use of point of view for Jack and the opening and closing scenes of
Room stand out the most. In the film a point of view shot is used quite a few times. A point of view shot is very resounding and very remeable. A point

shot of the only natural light source in the room, a sky light. Jack then starts narrating a story his mom Joy told him about when he was born.
While this narration is going on the film cuts to a shot of Joy and Jack in bed Jack is just waking up. This releases some of the tension but there is
still some residing anxiety and one really can't make out what is really going on yet. Joy makes a plan to escape with most of the task on Jack.
After Jack completes his escape and leads the police back to his mom still locked in the room, they go live together with Joys mom. Joy and Jack

Serial Killers Of Jack The Ripper
Jack The Ripper was a serial killer in East End London, in the late 1888's. No one knows who it is to this day. There are several theories to who it
could be, most are males but there is still a little doubt that could have been a woman, maybe both? The only thing that is known for sure these women
were victims of him or her. Jack The Ripper was known for the way he murder, he left cuts on both sides of the neck and made the knees or legs of
the women up towards her chest or in the air; in some cases he would destroy the body so bad that it was hard to identify who the victim was. One
of the only reasons police knew who the victims were in because Jack would write notes to the police office or the newspaper company telling them
who was killing next but not when. Jack The Ripper was a man of pattern and rountie. His killings were all almost alike and his victims had profiles
that matched each other's.
Jack had five victims, who were all women; the women had a couple things in common, all but one of the women were in their 40s, they were all
drinkers, and most of the five women were known to be in the business of prostitution. All five victims were found dead in poorly lit alley ways or
stairways, with their necks cut on either side and other lacerations throughout the body.
According to Josh Clark, this is what happened to the five victims of Jack The Ripper. Mary Nichols was the first victim, found on August 31,
1888 at 3:45am. Mary was 44 years old who liked her drinks. She was found in a narrow side street of Buck's Row in the Whitechapel; she had an
eight inch laceration to her throat that cut both of her major arteries and she had violent cuts on her abdomen. Annie Chapman was the second
victim, she was found on September 8, 1888 at 5:45am. Annie was a 47 year old widow who was a heavy drinker and survived through prostitution.
Annie was found outside an apartment at 29 Hanbury Street with a man of "shabby genteel", a few minutes after her being spotted with the man, a
muffled scream of "No!" followed by a loud thump on the fence. Her body was found in the backyard of the apartment, with " her feet pushed up
toward her body, knees in the air and spread apart. Her throat was cut deeply from left to right,

Human Nature In Lord Of The Flies Analysis
William Golding fulfills Hobbes' ideas about man with Lord of the Flies when Ralph and Jack battle over chief authority, when Simon gets killed, and
when the boys turn savage against each other.
An example of Golding supporting Hobbes's ideas about human nature is when Jack was trying to get the boys to vote Ralph off as chief by making
his own group of hunters. Hobbes describes man's nature to be, "if any two men desire the same thing, which... they cannot both enjoy, they become
enemies; and... endeavor to destroy or subdue one another." (Hobbes). With this quote, Hobbes is saying that if two people were to want the same
thing and it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hobbes expresses his thoughts of man as, "war consisteth not in battle only, or the act of fighting; but in a tract of time, wherein the will to contend
by battle is sufficiently known." (Hobbes). With this quote, Hobbes is saying that what makes up the idea to go to war or battle isn't the actual
fighting but the choice of going into this state to solve problems rather than a different way. This is shown in Lord of the Flies with the boys, Simon,
and the beast. Simon was trying to warn the boys about the beast but was confused for the beast. When the boys thought they saw the beast, they
followed Jack's chant and order to kill it. Golding writes, "The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out
against the abominable noise something about a body on the hill. " (Golding 152). Here, Simon was trying to protect himself from the boys as he tried
to tell the boys about his encounter with the lord of the flies. Jack and the tribe were so occupied and determined to kill the beast, that they didn't tell
the difference between a creature and Simon. They don't really know why they're actually killing the beast because they're just thinking about fighting
and battling. These actions are what

Democratic Peace Theory
Intro: US Presidents have made it a goal during their term(s) in office to establish a good relationship with foreign countries and even try to improve
upon existing connections with our allies. Some believe it is to prevent conflicts between the countries while others dispute that it is a threat assessment
by the United States to pick and choose their friends and enemies. Preventing conflict between two democracies or countries that practice democracy is
called Democratic Peace Theory. However, research has begun to show that Democratic Peace Theory is ineffective and needs to be brought to an
end as a model for how international relations are formed or destroyed. Democratic Peace Theory needs to be abolished as a support for forming ...

Gleditsch asks the question if democracies really do keep the peace and he found out that they try to but also sometimes have problems within their
own house (Gleditsch 289). This could explain why rebellions within a country usually win because the government is torn if they should quiet the
rebellion or concede because they do not want to be thrown out of office.
Shouldn't leave the "football" with a passionate fan: Democratic Peace Theory cannot work as a solution for unsuccessful talks when it comes to
foreign policy because when deciding if democracies should go to war with one another, having the citizens decide is bad because the average
person does not think rationally, they think emotionally which leads to more problems. Take the Cold War of the United States against the USSR as
an example of how emotions almost destroyed two nations. People were spying on their own family members out of fear of being branded a
communist and the fear of nuclear annihilation was ever present danger that children were doing drills in case of nuclear fallout. Had it not been for
Gorbachev assuming power in Russia and letting his people see what freedom was about through his policies, we would not be here today. Mr. Layne,
author of "Kant or Can't," furthers the point by stating that Democracies behave differently against non–democracies (Layne 4). Democratic Peace
Theory cannot be a solution to resolve foreign

Frankenstein/ Blade Runner Essay
'Our interest in the parallels between 'Frankenstein' and 'Blade Runner' is further enhanced by the consideration of their marked differences in textual
form.'
Evaluate this statement in light of your comparative study of 'Frankenstein' and 'Blade Runner'
Textual form is an issue which divide many critiques and audiences. Some view texts as a form being superior and more expressive, whereas others
may view film as to be losing its credibility of expression. Never the less it is adamant that through a comparative study of two differing forms
exploring similar ideas it becomes clear that one form isn't always superior over another. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818) and Ridley Scott's Blade

Such examples of this include the pathetic fallacy of 'lightning playing on the summit of Mont Blanc' with lightning being a recurring motif in the novel
expressing how nature, whilst having to power of destruction, also has the power to illuminate and make clear. Nature also acts as a savoir to Victor in
a time of sickness 'bestowing' on him the 'most delightful sensation' therefore conveying once more his connection and dependence with nature.
Just as 'Frankenstein' glorifies nature, Blade Runner explores a world where nature has become virtually obsolete. This mirrors the public's thoughts in
the 80's of a continued deterioration and the consequences of our overuse of nature. The opening scene of Blade Runner uses filmic techniques such as
chiaroscuro to reflect the lack of nature present with the entire landscape being industrialised. The pollution of the city drowns out the suns' light,
meaning all present lighting is artificial, reflecting a world with no natural warmth or clarity. The close up fade of the eye expresses a fire burning
within, a possible allusion to Hates and the underworld. The non–diegetic music played is synthetic sounding, providing an eerie setting, further
enforcing a lack of nature.
A lack of social responsibility is evident in Victor concerning the Creature setting up a creator verse created situation in Frankenstein. The monster
reflects context of Tabula Rasa, he is a blank slate; completely

Serial Killers : Jack The Ripper
There are many serial killers that live in infamy as household names such as, Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy, and Ted Bundy, to name a few.
These killers, and others, are well known today for their actions and will forever live, known as serial killers. However, there are a few cases
where the killer is never actually caught. Often the cases grow cold and the victims, are quickly forgotten. There is a very special and bizarre case
that sticks out from the others and because of this many do remember. The case, almost as old as modern policing itself, is simply remembered by
name coined for the killer, Jack the Ripper. What makes Jack the Ripper such a mystery is the fact that he was never caught.
The five murders carried out by Jack the Ripper were located at Whitechapel. Whitechapel is a small town in London which was stricken with
poverty. Families lived in very small single room houses. These houses were cramped with as many as nine family members per room. Overcrowding
led to miserable living conditions in and out of houses. Many people threw out their trash and waste onto the street and the lack of a sanitation and
sewer system also led to dangerous living conditions. For the families that could not afford the single room houses there was another option, lodging
houses. Every night almost eight thousand people refuged in these lodging houses. When staying at these lodging houses families were often forced to
sleep in a single room with many other families. The

Isolation in Frankenstein

Isolation is something that everybody experiences at some point in his or her life. There are many different types of alienation and there are many
different things that can cause someone to be solitary or lonely. Some people choose to be alone simply because they like to reflect on thoughts and
their lives, while some people end up alone even if they don't want to be. Isolation affects individuals in many different ways and can have many
different effects and outcomes on a person, such as depression and loneliness. This is shown in Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" through the monster,
Victor Frankenstein, and Robert Walton. Mary Shelley often uses the narrative style of writing to show the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows that Victor even knows that he will not be happy while he is isolated, but he plans to return to the things that make him happy when he
is finished with his work. In this novel, we see that community is an essential part to being happy in life. Community with other people is
something that every human has, but sometimes people get rejected from society, or they choose to not be a part of society. In both cases, we see
in Frankenstein, that they have negative outcomes and only make it harder for the individual to be happy. "All the creature wants is to be loved,
but after many attempts to fit into society, it realizes that it will never be accepted by humans" (Brannstrom, 11). We see that monster that he has
been rejected so many times from society to the point where he gives up on trying to be accepted and falls into a life of misery. This shows that us
that when people want to be accepted, but they aren't, they become depressed and miserable. Both Robert Walton and Victor Frankenstein choose to
be isolated because they would rather try and quench their thirst for adventure and knowledge. Walton shows how passionate his lust for knowledge
is when he says: "There is a love for the marvelous, a belief in the marvelous, intertwined in all my projects, which hurries me out of the common
pathways of men, even to the wild sea and unvisited regions I am about to explore" (Shelley, 20). This lust is the main reason why Walton is

A signalman is a short story written by Charles Dickens. This is a story about a signalman who is driven "mad" by the environment of his work, away
from sunlight and people. But he was not alone; a supernatural ghost decides to accompany him too. He has a lot of responsibilities to shoulder.
There are only two characters that really are prominent in the short story. In fact in the story, there are only about three to five characters. The important
characters are the signalman and the narrator. Charles Dickens uses dialogue to make the characters more appealing and easier to understand. He has

The signalman seemed to love his work even if he did not love his work he was always very devoted to his work.
I believe that one's work environment or even home environment defines a person and that is what builds one's character. The signalman had nothing in
his life except his job; he had nothing to return to his home for, no wife or children. His work environment was unpleasant and seems unhealthy and the
narrator saw this as stepping into the
"unknown," "...As if I left the natural world/... entrance to a black tunnel, in whose the massive architecture there was a barbarous depressing, and
forbidding air... it had an earthly deadly smell/ His post was in as solitary and dismal place as ever I saw." A limitation was placed on the signalman

The Call Of The Wild Analysis
Did you know that a St. Bernard and Scotch Shepherd mix can be on a Alaska sled dog team? In the novel, " The Call of the Wild" by Jack London.
A St. Bernard and Scotch Shepherd mixture, named Buck, is a domesticated pet living on a California Estate happy and free. But then he gets taken and
sent to the Yukon and Klondike. Now that he's in the northland being a sleddog and traveling THOUSANDS of miles to go to a famous gold rush. In
the novel Buck goes through three different themes, but the one that stood out was the theme of Struggle for Mastery. In the novel " The Call of the Wild
" by Jack London. The theme of the novel is struggle for mastery is made throughout the book. For example, Jack London is narrating this setting in the
Eldorado Saloon, were Black Burton is getting in a fight and Buck's master, John Thornton tries to break it up, ending up getting pushed and Buck
protecting Thornton. In quotation, "Those who were looking on heard what was neither ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The novel also shows that Buck had another Struggle for Mastery moment in the book. Buck was lying near the fire and started to remember all of his
earlier memories in the North–land. Buck thought, " ... but oftener he remembered the man in the red sweater, the death of Curly, the dog fight with
Spitz, and the good things he had eaten or would like to eat" (London, 49). This relates to the theme because of Buck took mastery of Spitz, also took
mastery of the animals in the woods when he was hunting them, but the only thing he didn't take mastery of is the man in the red sweater. Buck was
transported from the south–land to the north–land and showed up at a harsh dog trainer, and Buck is struggling to get mastery. He didn't succeed
though. He was learning something new, not to go at a man with a club. "For the last time he rushed. The man struck the screwed blow he had
purposely withheld for so long, and Buck crumpled up and went down, knocked utterly

Jack Hunting Epilogue
Jack looked down at the picture of the man, and the man looked back at him from the photograph.
"Hunt", Lieutenant Winters said, but already Jack knew who he was talking about.
"Best shooter of his division. Top grades in every test. Off the charts in every single conceivable aspect an army man can be off the charts in, from his
first day", Winters completed.
Jack looked up from the file to the tired eyes of the Lieutenant across the table. "Yes", he said. "I've heard of him."
"Everyone's heard of Hunt", Winters continued. "The man has a statue of himself in front of the God damn White House, Jack."
"I don't understand", Jack ventured, careful. "Why are you showing me this, Lieutenant?"

Jack again looked down at Hunt's picture. "He's... He's alive?"
He noticed a stamp, right by the United States Army, one he hadn't noticed before.
"He's very much alive, Jack. And he's going to play a decisive role in this war, is my guess."
Jack looked up at Lieutenant Winters. "General Hunt is going to lead humanity to war?"
The stamp on the file, by the US Army Stamp, it was a NASA stamp.
Winters shook his head. "No, Jack. He's not going to lead humanity."

From the transparent glass wall on the front of the main battleship, General Hunt piped away white, thick smoke from a Cuban cigar, watching the pale
blue dot that was once his home slowly growing bigger.
"General, we need you in the control room, something about the plan of attack."
Hunt turned back to look at the translucent, thin figure by the door. He nodded slightly.
"I'll be right there", he said, taking another puff of the cigar. He turned his gaze back to the glass again, and the Chryssalid excused himself.
Out of the window, Earth stared back at General Hunt, as indifferent to him as he was to it

An Summary Of The Story Of 'Anything Is Possible'
The phrase 'anything is possible' became a mantra in Jack's life. It was easy to believe when the days were filled with ambition, prosperity, and
fortune. He became presumptuous; blinded by the belief that he was untouchable. It must have been a result of all his doubts being washed away by
the sound of trumpets and glimpses of a pretty girl's thighs. However, the allure of that lifestyle withered with the publication of each and every article
regarding the stock market. The course pages of the paper spoke of declining percentages, monetary loss, and eventually, an economic crisis. Yet during
this time, the working class were reassured by the suits; pacified with composed statures and audacious affirmations. When the truth had ultimately...

Jack held the same belief, despite the fact he would never express it vocally. The all too familiar mask of desperation was indisputably distinct on
the men and women surrounding Jack. They were hungry, for something much more than food. Jack himself could understand, he couldn't
remember the last time he felt content. The majority of his time and energy was exhausted by the apprehension of a time when he would be
incapable of feeding his family. The day's proximity was too close for comfort, especially considering he hadn't been employed for a number of
months now. He heard stories sometimes, stories of men who created problems just for a pay check. Mickey, a man he was long ago acquainted
with, was rumoured to have initiated forest fires in order to be employed by the fire department. Jack rued the day the state of his situation declined
so severely he had no other choice than to resort to such disconcerting acts. He wondered if the men and women surrounding him had ever envisioned
themselves participating in such delinquency. It was that moment Jack became conscious of the fact that these people had lives, comprised of their
own experiences, desires, and struggles. It felt surreal, being in the midst of a bustling crowd yet at the same time, being so isolated. He sliced like a
knife through everything; at the same time was outside, looking on. The people in front of Jack slowly moved

Compare And Contrast The End Of History And Fukuyama
The end of the Cold War was not just a politically significant event but also an important intellectual milestone, where academics, researchers and
intellectuals examined the consequences that its end would concur. Fukuyama's The End of History and Huntington's Clash of Civilizations are two of
such explorations but contrast each other significantly. Fukuyama predicts a future of peace, or minimal conflict, amidst the spread of Western liberal
democracy, a system of government he believes has been actualized as perfect in Hegel's realm of consciousness whereas Huntington argues that
conflict will stem from civilizational differences, owing to the rise in civilization–consciousness. I will start my essay by briefly summarizing the main
arguments of each article, after which I will attempt to critique each one before drawing comparisons between the two.

They can essentially both be viewed as imperialists in the disguise of academia. In trying to argue that fascism and communism were imperialist forces
that the West defeated, Fukuyama forgot to consider that thecapitalism itself is one of those forces, guided by capital gain, and exploitation. In that
sense, when he argues about the appreciation of American culture in other countries, it becomes a new–imperialism of culture where there is a new
global proletariat of weaker countries who can't afford to have protectionist economies to safeguard their values because then the West wont help them.
Nonetheless, neither Huntington nor Fukuyama tells us what we need to know in order to synthesize their perspectives, or to ultimately decide between

What Is The Moral Of Frankenstein
The message, merits, and moral implications of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein have been long debated and discussed. Many recurring themes which are
apt to surface in these conversations are those such as the woes of artificial creation and the "man is not God" argument. These themes have been so
thoroughly explored and exploited that this essay could not possibly generate and original thought within the realms covered by these topics. In order
to formulate something remotely fresh and at least relatively interesting, this essay seeks to shift the focus to the less explored dilemmas which Shelley
may have purposely or subconsciously woven into the classic novel. The very fact that Mary Shelley is a woman casts the already remarkable tale ...

Having shown that Shelley intended for Victor to play the role of 'mother' in her analogy, focus will now shift to the ultimate point of the novel:
The nurturing provided by a mother (Victor), is the most necessary and vital experience of a child's life and directly affects the person he becomes.
From the very beginning, Victor shirks the responsibility of nurture and literally runs from it. As the creature awakes he exclaims: "breathless horror
and disgust filled my heart. Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created; I rushed out of the room" (Shelley 58). The Monster then
immediately assumes the role of infant in the relationship as Victor says, "His eyes were fixed on me. His jaws opened, and he muttered some
inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks" (Shelley 59). In the normal human realm this situation would be met with a dozen tear–filled
eyes seeking to hold and coddle the creation. Unfortunately for the Monster, no such treatment is offered by Victor.Frankenstein leaves the Monster to
fend for himself. The horrible consequences of this lack of nurturing follow with intensity and frequency. This is proven by the rapidly building sense
of confusion and loneliness within the monster. Feelings which are only multiplied by society's general rejection of him. The Monster laments to
Victor upon their reunion on these feelings, "no distinct ideas occupied my mind: all was confused. I felt light, and

Who Is Truly Evil In Lord Of The Flies
For centuries, philosophers have debated the question of whether man is truly evil. William Golding strikes this question in his highly realistic
novel, Lord of The Flies. The story is set in a tropical island during World War 2 when a plane is shot down holding British schoolboys. No adults
survive and they are left to govern themselves until they are rescued. Through Jack, Golding demonstrates what will happen to man when law and
order are taken away, and that ultimately man will choose safe gray over civility. In the beginning, Jack shows up as head boy of the choir. Jack
thinks he should lead the boys on the island because he already leads his choir."I ought to be chief, because I'm chapter chorister and head boy,"
(Golding 22). This is the first time we see Jack's wanting of power. Jack has led before and sees how much power and strength comes with it. This
makes him want more, rather than having a civil vote, and choose who the leader should be. He becomes power hungry and always wants more. This,
Golding proves that man will choose savagery over order and decorum.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One thing he gave up was peace. When the hunters let the fire out, Piggy scolds them. Jack gets fed up and results to violence."He took a step, and
able at last to hit someone, stuck his fist right into Piggy's stomach," (Golding 71). This is the start of the break between Ralph's group and Jack's
group. Since Jack is so power hungry, he does not like it when people try to put him in his place. When they do try to bring Jack down to his place,
Jack automatically responds with violence. In this way, Golding proves that Jack had to give up things to feed his need for

Reliable Partners : How Democracies Have Made A Separate...
Charles Lipson in "Reliable Partners: How Democracies Have Made a Separate Peace," argues that Democratic Peace Theory offers an explanation as
to why democracies, in particular, have avoided the war front. In his delineation, he cites the ideals of bargaining, mutual benefit, reluctance to bear the
cost of war, and the restraint placed upon elected official as to why democracies, unlike non–democracies, have avoided conflict for as long as they
have (Lipson 10). His argument, alike to other Democratic peace theorists, consist of the idea that all areas should be a democracy, as these benefits
exist amongst democracies due to their shared values.
Although this theory seemingly has its benefits, it also has its downfalls. There are three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Democratic Peace Theory contends that there is a constant peace in society due to mutual profitability and understanding, but Realists typically tend
towards the belief that there is a perpetual security dilemma within society and that there is a constant threat of war. Permanent peace seems
improbable to Realists, as conflicts are bound to arise due to conflicting interests and opinions, and said conflicts have persisted amongst democracies
in the past. Comprehensively, the idea that neither the theory itself or alternative theories can explain Democratic Peace Theories perpetuation could
mean that there is no such thing as democratic peace. Theoretically, however, the proposal that said theory explanation is derived from an unaffiliated
source. One could argue that said cohesiveness between democracies can be based upon an imperialistic and hegemonic United States. America 's
increasing annual power presence created a sense of stability and strength that could be "democratic peace." The war part could be either coincidence
or due to fear of attacking a hegemon. The indefinency of the theory puts its legitimacy into question. If we are unsure of its origins and why it's in
existence, a question remains–is the theory admissible?
Additionally, the ideal of no war in an entirely democratic society is incomprehensible to Constructionists and Realists. Democratic Peace Theorists

Pros And Cons Of Liberal Peace Theory
Liberal or democratic peace theory has points in favor of its argument but it also counts with flaws and weaknesses. For example, the theory analyses
the relation between liberal states and between liberal states and non–liberal states, leaving aside a clear explanation of why non–liberal states have a
tendency to go to war higher than liberal ones or the relation between non–liberals. Additionally, it does not take into consideration that
"non–democracies are just as capable of establishing peace both amongst themselves and also with democracies" (Tziarras, 2012). Another flaw
identified by many critics to the theory is that there is no sufficient statistical evidence to demonstrate that democracies never, or hardly ever, go to war

Therefore, it is not about the nature of liberal democratic character, but the nature of norms itself, which evolve in time between states. Norms are
essential to International Relations as they define what actors should do, accounting for a basis so that all states follow such norms. Democratic
political culture has shown over time that it encourages peaceful means of resolution. Thus, this perception of critical–solving through peace has
become a shared norm between states since leaders in one democratic state will suppose and expect the other democratic state will act in the same
manner, smoothing the conflicts and differences between them in a peaceful way. Political ideology consequently begins to have a degree of similarity
between these states. As mentioned before hand, these norms are not fixed and can adjust within time, "cultural norms influences the creation and
evolution of political institutions, and institutions help generate a more peaceful moral culture over time" (Placek, 2012). This creates a general aspect
of what behavior ought to be between these democratic states, more than the nature of them being

Jack feels it is his duty as an American and a Jew to fight against Hitler. Jack has an older brother, Irving, who was rejected from the army because

To understand Fukuyama's theory one must look beyond the specific words. Fukuyama is not claiming that history has or will end and that occurrences
of history will cease to exist. He is saying that democracy is such a perfect and Idealistic form of rule that no major change in political philosophy can
happen in the future. Historical occurrences will still exist, but they will be within the realm of the current political philosophical thought. Fukuyama
goes even further to prove his point by showing that the new philosophies on government created since the oncoming of democracy, (Communism,
Socialism, etc.) have ultimately failed and democracy has prevailed in its place.
In the Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, Samuel Huntington argues that the primary political actors in the 21st century will be
civilizations and that the primary conflicts will be conflicts between these civilizations rather then between nation states.
Huntington Writes:
"It is my hypothesis that the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will not be primarily ideological or primarily economic. The great
divisions among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will be cultural. Nation states will remain the most powerful actors in world affairs,
but the principal conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations. The clash of civilizations will dominate

Sounds strange enough to me why did he keep the game on? He could say give up, though. I think Jack pride at stake here. He must decide what is
more important, lose his bet or his belt. Maybe that is the reason why he survived so far. Altough we know, in the end Jack made a foul to Walcott and
is disqualified.
From this quote (which was Jack said):
"I think I can last. I don't want this bohunk to stop me."
He must be thinking about something just to finish this fight before the game ends. No matter how. I think Jack thought so.
And take a look at this quote:
"He (means Jack) certainly did used to make the fellows he fought hate boxing. That was why he hated Richie Lewis so. He never got Richie's goat.
Richie Lewis always had about three new dirty things Jack could not do. Jack was as safe as a church all the time he was in there, as long as he was
strong."
I will underlined this statement: "Richie Lewis always had about three new dirty things Jack could not do. That was why he hated him so much."
And if we go back to the game between Jack and Walcott. I think he had prepared well for this "dirty thing" before the gong of the last round rang.
He had prepared to do something bad to finish this fight because he told Jerry and John that he knew he could not stand any longer in this match.
And perhaps he had made a decision or had knew the good answer about what he had to choose between his belt or his bet. So that was why he made
a foul to Walcott and is disqualified.

These curiosities should have been answer by a parent, Victor Frankenstein. However, Victor never put any effort in guiding the poor and innocent
child. Evelyn Yeo in "How Does Emotional Abuse Affect Self
– Esteem," concludes that from the time of infant–hood to childhood, a child's sense of
self is defined by how he was treated and what he was told by his parents and primary caregivers. Infants especially, have no knowledge of who they
are as a separate person so they rely heavily on their parents' feedback. From parents' trust, affection, and encouragement, the child will eventually
grow up with confidence and achieve potential to make him or her parents' proud. Overtime, self esteem will soon build upon them so they are
prepared to be set in the real world (1).
On the other hands, these stages in helping and encouraging a kid are important for them to able to become an adult. But once again, Frankenstein
never displays how a father would act. Yet, Victor only showed sign of terror by the repulsive exterior of the creature. No parent should draw final
conclusion on whether if the child will become evil or good; its final judgment will be upon how they act toward the others. Just by looking at their
communication and action, it can tell a lot of who they are as a person and how the parents has influence their belief.

Dishonesty hurts because it undermines the relationship, breaks trust and is the opposite of intimacy. The novel, The Importance of Being Earnest

the opposite, mainly Jack. The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde was mainly about a guy named Jack, who was discovered in a handbag

Essay about Democratic Peace Theory
The idea that democracies do not fight each other can be traced back to the writings of Immanuel Kant over two hundred years ago in essay 'On
Perpetual Peace', however, only in the early 1980s and with the writings of Michael Doyle was the idea consolidated. According to Doyle and other
advocates of the democratic peace theory, liberal democratic states have been able to maintain peaceful relations amongst themselves, but are prone to
wage war against non–democratic regimes. In order to prove this theory, vast databases have been constructed of historical dyadic relationships
between states as well as detailed breakdowns of incidents of inter–state war. The conclusions reached are best shown in the work of Bruce Russett who

So the theory suggests that because democracies externalise their interstate norms, they resolve disputes with other states like them in a peaceful way.
Hence domestic inner–state policies influence their foreign policies. However, this proclamation is disputed by C. Layne who argues that the 'crux' of
this theory is that if the assumption that democracies promote their peaceful inner–state norms and beliefs, then they shouldn't ever threaten other
democracies, especially not in a crisis. I will use the case study of the 'Trent affair' to provide evidence of how war was avoided. I will argue that in
this case, war was avoided not because of the domestic pacific influence on foreign policy but because of other strategic reasons. In 1861 there was an
incident when the British mail ship Trent which was transporting J. M. Mason and J. Slidell on route from America to England, was stopped by the
USS San Jacinto and the two men were arrested. This caused outrage amongst the British public, writes Layne, adding some of the reports from the
time such as "the people are frantic with rage... I have never seen so intense a feeling of indignation in my life." An ultimatum was immediately sent to
Washington and military threats were given. This indicates that the government, as much as the public, was very much bellicose. So even though both
countries were

Compare And Contrast Huntington And Fukuyama
Samuel Huntington and Francis Fukuyama
The Berlin Wall was about to fall, the Soviet Union was collapsing, and the world was clamoring for the consumerist boom in an orgy of free–market
handful experience, international politics began travelling out of a Westernized phase, and the relation between the West and the rest began to
crystallize and contest.
Huntington and Fukuyama both provide ground–breaking paradigms that explain the complexities of an embryonic post–Cold War world. Their distinct
ideologies are a result of their respective false consciousness which, stems from particular political ideas embodying different social interests.
Huntington peddles a culturalist thesis whilst Fukuyama embodies a framework of universalization of western liberal democracy in the socio–cultural
evolution to the end point of human governance.
Fukuyama presented his argument in 1992, and his teacher responded in 1993 with his theory, 'The clash of civilizations'. Not only do their theories
differ from one another, but we see a stark difference in their writing style as well. Huntington refers to his thesis as a hypothesis, indicating an
experiment rather than a mere opinion, which can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is clearly indicating how Fukuyama is an optimistic neo–liberal who favors freedom and democratic features and procedures. Fukuyama was
careful to stress that he was not implying that contestation isn't a probability, or that there would be no countries left in the world that did not conform
to the liberal democratic model. "At the end of history," he wrote, "it is not necessary that all societies become successful liberal societies, merely that
they end their ideological pretensions of representing different and higher forms of human society." (Fukuyama,

The Importance of Setting in Jack London's To Build A Fire
In "To Build a Fire" by Jack London, the setting plays a
significant role throughout the entire short story. Jack London uses
certain techniques to establish the atmosphere of the story. By
introducing his readers to the setting, prepares them for a tone that is
depressed and frightening. Isolated by an environment of frigid
weather and doom, the author shows us how the main character of the story
is completely unaware of his surroundings. The only world the man is truly
accustomed to, is his own. Never being exposed to such a harsh climate,
draws us to the conclusion that the environment is the determining factor
of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What he would do if the
inevitable happened to him, is his personal monster. This situation
causes the man to become selfish, only focusing on his present actions and
thoughts. The man's ignorance to his surroundings foreshadows a possible
downfall.
London provides us with subconscious hints in his writing, that
lead his readers to believe that the man will suffer a tragedy in the end
of the story. "Its instinct told a truer tale than was told to the man by
the man's judgment." Having only the knowledge of his previous experiences,
the man is at a disadvantage to the dog. The dog by nature, is an
animal that has an innate gift of instinct. The setting placed in this
type of habitat, is the main conflict of the story. Under the cold
conditions, the dog has the ability to survive because it has always known
how. Only using his judgment, the man can't understand how to prevent a
disaster from occurring. London has already given away the ending, as a
result of his constant focus of the effect the environment has on the man
not knowing the means of survival that the dog knows.
Lured to the plot of the story, we keep on reading always
anticipating the danger of the climate to overcome the man. "On the other
hand, there was no keen

The Importance of Companionship Essay
"In this prison it is only in human intercourse that I can pretend to find consolation" (Shelley 191), writes Mary Shelley on January 18th, 1824, to
describe her extreme state of loneliness two years after her husband's passing. This passage shows how lack of companionship can make the world
seems empty, while an abundance of companionship will fill the lives of those who are so blessed to possess it. In many novels we can see how the
protagonist always has their confidante, or someone who they will turn to when they are filled with despair and agony. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is
no different. Each character has a need for the presence of a kind and loving soul in their life, or they could be turned into creatures of misery and
anguish. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"I felt suddenly, and for the first time during many months, calm and serene joy. I welcomed my friend..." (Shelley 37) shows his happiness when
Clervel arrives, for a moment he even forgets the creature he had created. He says: "With this deep consciousness of what they owed to the being to
which they had given life... I received a lesson of patience, of charity, and of self–control..." (Shelley 16), in which you see how the parent of a child
understands that the child needs a caring, loving hand in order to grow up with a caring, loving heart. Victor seems to have forgotten this lesson that
his parents taught him when he is repulsed by his creation, of whom he was so sure that "... no father would claim the gratitude of his child as I
should so completely..." (Shelley 32), yet he rejects the monster because of its hideous appearance.
"All men hate the wretched; how then, must I be hated, who am miserable beyond all living things! Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me, they
creature, to whom thou art bound by ties only dissoluble by the annihilation of one of us" (Shelley 83). This passage is very enlightening as to how
companionship or lack thereof can affect one greatly. The monster that Victor Frankenstein created was wretched in his ugliness. He felt as if "when
[he] looked around [he] saw and heard of none like [him]" (Shelley 105). This 'monster' did not want be "a blot upon the

Othello and Frankenstein Essay
From Man to Monster When monsters are thought of a very distinct picture comes to mind. An ugly creature that is out for blood, born into a life
where causing misery is his driving force. Do these features really define what a monster is; works of literature like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and
Shakespeare's Othello tell quite a different story. Monsters are not born but made just as people are not born evil but can sometimes end up there.
Othello and the Monster start of as good men looking to be part of society but were pushed out because of what others perceived them to be. This
caused them to mentally and physically isolate themselves from everyone allowing hatred to take over. Iago and Frankenstein also helped to instill
thoughts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since Othello is being manipulated he finds it hard to be around any one causing him to separate himself from his loved ones and colleagues. When
asking to speak with Desdemona to question her on her infidelity he tells her, "Get you to bed on th' instant. I will be returned/ forth with. Dismiss
your attendant there. Look't be/ done." (Shakespeare IV, iii, 7–9). He is uncomfortable talking to her in the presence of Emilia, almost like an outsider
being involved would confuse him further. His separation from all other characters other than Iago keeps him from knowing the truth. This causes his
mind to run wild and come up with reasons that justify him in his monstrous actions that have become more frequent. However, in comparison the
Monsters physical isolation causes him to mentally isolate himself. After being abandon by Frankenstein the Monster is forced to live on his own in
the woods. Realizing that human kind will never truly accept him he asks Victor to create him a mate stating, "I am alone and miserable man will not
associate with me" (Shelley, 118). When Victor ultimately denies the Monster of companionship he becomes enraged again continuing to lose his faith
in mankind. The Monsters physical segregation fuels his mental isolation whole Othello's mental isolation fuels his physical segregation. Othello and
the Monster are also mentally isolated in very different ways. Othello's mental isolation is driven by Iago's manipulation.

Francis Fukuyama 's The End Of History
Life of Ideology, Life of Conflict: Francis Fukuyama and Samuel Huntington
In Francis Fukuyama 's "The End of History?" published in 1989, he posits that with the end of the Cold War, humanity is reaching a point where
Western liberal democracy and economic structure is the highest form of ideological development. Other ideologies (communism, fascism, etc.) are
vestigial forms of thinking destined to fail and disappear in an inevitable progression towards a liberal system (Fukuyama 1989). In "The Clash of
Civilizations?" published in 1993, Samuel Huntington writes that the world is divided into civilizations, based on culture (not ideology or economic
factors), and that the conflicts of the future (and some in the present) will be based on divisions along those lines. These include, according to
Huntington, "Western, Confucian, Japanese, Islamic, Hindu, Slavic–Orthodox, Latin American and possibly African..." (Huntington 1993, 25). While
these theories are seemingly compatible at first glance – Fukuyama 's Westernliberalism can be the victor in Huntington 's war of civilizations – there is
a major difference, and some important reasons for this difference, which we can find in the authors ' pasts.
I believe that the major difference is Fukuyama 's faith in a victory for Western liberalism. While Huntington is satisfied with showing that other
civilizations/cultures will clash with the West 's, Fukuyama is confident that the West is already on its way to victory. We can

End Of History Essay

  • 1. End Of History Essay Name: Peter Reddaway ID: 14135766. Paper: 200161 Question: Will there ever be an 'End of History'? Is it possible for there to ever be an 'End of History'? While it certainly isn't impossible it's very unlikely. But to assess the likelihood of it occurring first, we must ascertain exactly what that entails. There are several theories, the first of which comes from a French philosopher named Antoine–Augustin Cournot. His definition being "to refer to the end of the historical dynamic with the perfection of civil society" (Mike Featherstone, "Global and Local Cultures", in John Bird, Barry Curtis, Tim Putnam, Mapping the Futures: Local Cultures, Global Change (1993)) His definition is by far the broadest. Marx, however, theorised that the evolution... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without this men, women and transgender people will forever live in a sense of competition, instead of working in sync. Without this, the unity of people cannot fully be realized. In order to rectify this, we need to conceptualise gender as a social structure, this will allow us to better analyse how individuals are affected by their gender and how this affects society as a whole. To conceptualise gender as a structure situates gender at the same level of general social significance as the economy and the polity. Risman, B. J. (2004). To conclude, the 'End of History' is a difficult concept to define. Many different ideologies interpret it differently and it's hard to say which is more likely. In the end I tend to think of the 'End of History' as a time of complete equality with an excellent rate of education and standard of living. Due to low instances of hatred toward people of different class, gender and faith. With Religion's sharper points dulled down and woven in to the political system and education as a base for social improvement it may just be possible to advance to a point in which the 'End of History' is considered the ... • 2. In 1989, Francis Fukuyama published "the End of History?"... In 1989, Francis Fukuyama published "the End of History?" on the National Interest. Throughout the article, he attempted to account for the global changes in the post–Cold War era including the ideological transformation of the Soviet Union by introducing a new idea of 'the end of history'. To Fukuyama, this idea signified the main ground for the turbulence and the systematic reformation. His argument that the history will no longer evolve has two main significations. First, the ideas or ideologies humans developed throughout the history reached their end points. The victory of the west meant that there was no other alternative ideology to substitute for liberal democracy. Second, the western liberal democracy will be universalised as it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, Fukuyama tries to answer this question by introducing the "search for recognition." (Fukuyama, 1993) Fukuyama utilises concepts such as 'megalothymia' and 'isothymia' which root from a Greek word, 'thymos.' (1993, p. 182) The former refers to a desire to be recognised by having a superior power or ability whereas the latter refers to the same but by maintaining the equal power or status as others. He states that other than the basic needs of human, there is the quest for recognition that work as a source of motivation. The reason why the desire for domination arises is because the mankind wants to satisfy the desire for recognition. Thus, the modern society is a by–product of history driven by the search for recognition, and that is how modern capitalism came into existence. (Fukuyama, 1993) If so, the question of why capitalist society must conclude into liberal democratic political system remains, and this is the core of Fukuyama's thesis. The rationale behind this is that liberal democracy is the only ideology that satisfies the desire to be recognised. The history of mankind started off from the desire to dominate of 'megalothymia', and ended in the state of 'isothymia' when liberal democracy finally arrived. • 4. English Commentary on Frankenstein Isolation in Frankenstein This passage is taken from page 119 of chapter 19 in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Closing in on the ending of the novel, this passage explores the self–reflecting state of Frankenstein's mind when in isolation on the Islands of Orkney. Fear arises as a critical emotion that strikes him during his time spent on his creation. After visiting Edinburgh and a number of other cities, Frankenstein leaves his friend Henry Clerval and settles in a remote part of the Scottish countryside to finish the work of creating a partner for the monster. He commences his new creation driven by his fear of the monster. However, although Frankenstein has agreed to the task, he detests his work and begins to doubt the ... This time around however, he explains "I went to it in cold blood, and my heart often sickened at the work of my hands" (Shelly 119). Contrasting to his first experiment, the enthusiasm that there once was, is now shrouded by fear and sickness of his creation. Frankenstein now indicates negative perceptions towards experimentation and creation of life, mostly due to the revolting nature of the monster he had created. Furthermore, we can see him criticise his job by depicting it as a "filthy process" (Shelly 119) and "the most detestable occupation" (Shelly 120). The diction used here suggests that what he once craved is now believed to be repulsive and disgusting. His negativity towards his work gives the impression of a serious and sombre tone that displays the bothered nature in his thoughts. The tone darkens into a feeling of deep despair once Frankenstein expresses his fear towards the monster. He describes his spirits as unequal and he is growing restless and nervous. Just with the mention of the monster can strike uneasy feelings into him, emphasizing the depressive features of the tone. Shelley emphasizes the word "fear" many times; she writes "I feared to meet my persecutor. Sometimes I sat with my eyes fixed on the ground, fearing to raise them" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lord Of The Flies Man Vs Society Analysis Lord of the Flies Man vs Society, Man vs Man, and Man vs nature Illustrate Humanity The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a novel where man is fending for survival. Boys are aground on an island at the time of a war. The two main characters Jack and Ralph, who represent civilisation and barbarism, have a strong conflict. This has an effect on the rest of the boys throughout the book. All of the boys slowly turn into savages further into the story. Close to the end of the book Jack states "And the conch doesn't count at this end of the island." pg. 186 When Jack says this, it represents that he does not want rules. Jack is a savage and he refuses to be civil and organized. In the novel, The lord of the Flies, by William Golding the conflict man vs. society, man vs. man, and man vs. nature illustrate humanity. One major conflict in The Lord of the Flies is man vs. society. Ralph is good for the island society because he concluded there need to be rules and order so that the boys stay balanced and are concentrated on getting recaptured. " The rules! 'Shouted Ralph' You're breaking the rules!" pg. 130 Ralph is fighting for civilization, he is trying to make everything is coordinated, all he wants is for all of them to get rescued. Society need rules in order to be civil, because if everyone was not civil, the world would be turbulent. Ralph is the leader of the "tribe". When Jack separated from the group and made his own tribe it all became crazy. Jack's group was chaotic; however, they did know how to hunt and they had the ability to start a fire because of Piggy's specs. One boy states, "We did everything adults would do, what went wrong" (Golding). When boys from Ralph's tribe decided to leave and start their own clan then everything started becoming chaotic. If they all would have stayed together they would have had trouble getting along but at least it wouldn't be hectic. Ralph did the best he could trying to keep everyone from going insane. Ralph represents humanity, and jack represents savagery. Piggy has an external conflict with jack in the novel. From a neorealist's point of view, bipolarity is the ideal case scenario since both the superpowers will have fear of each other and hence there would be less international conflicts. However, the Cold War failed to prove this point. The US (a capitalist state) and the Soviet Union (a communist state) had conflicting beliefs about government and economics; hence, the disagreements led to the Cold War. The Cold War is believed to have lasted from 1947–1991, a span of 44 years with the Soviet Union eventually being dissolved. Francis Fukuyama, another political scientist, reflected that human nature strives for supremacy and recognition, which eventually leads to conflicts between different governances. Francis Fukuyama, the author of the book, "The End of History", considered that humans tend to move their lives towards an end point; which in post–Cold War scenario was to eliminate communism and assert liberal democracy as the universal model of governance. After the Cold War, communism had been overcome by democracy and hence, according to him, the history had come to an end. He also believes that China has an efficient authoritarian centralized system with no constraint or checks and balances. This system can outperform democracy in the short run because decisions can be made quickly hence better for investment and growth. However, the US and WesternEurope have lots of checks and balances hence, decisions on impending plans cannot be made immediately. The question now is which system is more sustainable going forward? He thinks that checks and balances and democracy is superior in the long run because you need to have good leadership and the right leaders for a liberal system to be implemented properly. After all, he believed that the only form of government across the globe will eventually be liberal democracy. I consider Fukuyama's deduction that we have reached the "End of History" as premature at this point in history. Former British Prime–Minister, Margaret Thatcher, stated: "End of history? Beginning of nonsense." After 1990, since the end of Cold War, there have been several wars and genocides, 9/11 attacks, the emergence of ISIS; all disproving Fukuyama's ... The Use Of Diction In Oedipus The King King uses controlling diction and animalizes Jack to illustrate his anxiety in dealing with the resurgence of the wasps, further characterizing Jack as an unstable man who threatens his family's wellbeing through his lack of stereotypical masculinity. Through Jack's response to the rediscovery of wasps in Danny's room, King reinforces Jack's animalistic state of mind, as illustrated in his explosive reaction, " 'Shut the fuck up and kill them!' he roared" (King 133). By implementing this commanding diction, King fully strips Jack of his masculinity, and reveals his true character as a deranged danger to the welfare of his family. • 10. Serial Killers Of Jack The Ripper Jack The Ripper was a serial killer in East End London, in the late 1888's. No one knows who it is to this day. There are several theories to who it could be, most are males but there is still a little doubt that could have been a woman, maybe both? The only thing that is known for sure these women were victims of him or her. Jack The Ripper was known for the way he murder, he left cuts on both sides of the neck and made the knees or legs of the women up towards her chest or in the air; in some cases he would destroy the body so bad that it was hard to identify who the victim was. One of the only reasons police knew who the victims were in because Jack would write notes to the police office or the newspaper company telling them who was killing next but not when. Jack The Ripper was a man of pattern and rountie. His killings were all almost alike and his victims had profiles that matched each other's. Jack had five victims, who were all women; the women had a couple things in common, all but one of the women were in their 40s, they were all drinkers, and most of the five women were known to be in the business of prostitution. All five victims were found dead in poorly lit alley ways or stairways, with their necks cut on either side and other lacerations throughout the body. According to Josh Clark, this is what happened to the five victims of Jack The Ripper. Mary Nichols was the first victim, found on August 31, 1888 at 3:45am. Mary was 44 years old who liked her drinks. She was found in a narrow side street of Buck's Row in the Whitechapel; she had an eight inch laceration to her throat that cut both of her major arteries and she had violent cuts on her abdomen. Annie Chapman was the second victim, she was found on September 8, 1888 at 5:45am. Annie was a 47 year old widow who was a heavy drinker and survived through prostitution. Annie was found outside an apartment at 29 Hanbury Street with a man of "shabby genteel", a few minutes after her being spotted with the man, a muffled scream of "No!" followed by a loud thump on the fence. Human Nature In Lord Of The Flies Analysis William Golding fulfills Hobbes' ideas about man with Lord of the Flies when Ralph and Jack battle over chief authority, when Simon gets killed, and when the boys turn savage against each other. An example of Golding supporting Hobbes's ideas about human nature is when Jack was trying to get the boys to vote Ralph off as chief by making his own group of hunters. Hobbes describes man's nature to be, "if any two men desire the same thing, which... they cannot both enjoy, they become enemies; and... endeavor to destroy or subdue one another." (Hobbes). This is shown in Lord of the Flies with the boys, Simon, and the beast. Simon was trying to warn the boys about the beast but was confused for the beast. When the boys thought they saw the beast, they followed Jack's chant and order to kill it. Golding writes, "The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise something about a body on the hill. " (Golding 152). Here, Simon was trying to protect himself from the boys as he tried to tell the boys about his encounter with the lord of the flies. Preventing conflict between two democracies or countries that practice democracy is called Democratic Peace Theory. Gleditsch asks the question if democracies really do keep the peace and he found out that they try to but also sometimes have problems within their own house (Gleditsch 289). This could explain why rebellions within a country usually win because the government is torn if they should quiet the rebellion or concede because they do not want to be thrown out of office. Shouldn't leave the "football" with a passionate fan: Democratic Peace Theory cannot work as a solution for unsuccessful talks when it comes to foreign policy because when deciding if democracies should go to war with one another, having the citizens decide is bad because the average person does not think rationally, they think emotionally which leads to more problems. Take the Cold War of the United States against the USSR as an example of how emotions almost destroyed two nations. People were spying on their own family members out of fear of being branded a communist and the fear of nuclear annihilation was ever present danger that children were doing drills in case of nuclear fallout. Had it not been for Gorbachev assuming power in Russia and letting his people see what freedom was about through his policies, we would not be here today. Just as 'Frankenstein' glorifies nature, Blade Runner explores a world where nature has become virtually obsolete. This mirrors the public's thoughts in the 80's of a continued deterioration and the consequences of our overuse of nature. The opening scene of Blade Runner uses filmic techniques such as chiaroscuro to reflect the lack of nature present with the entire landscape being industrialised. The pollution of the city drowns out the suns' light, meaning all present lighting is artificial, reflecting a world with no natural warmth or clarity. The close up fade of the eye expresses a fire burning within, a possible allusion to Hates and the underworld. The non–diegetic music played is synthetic sounding, providing an eerie setting, further enforcing a lack of nature. The five murders carried out by Jack the Ripper were located at Whitechapel. Whitechapel is a small town in London which was stricken with poverty. Families lived in very small single room houses. These houses were cramped with as many as nine family members per room. Overcrowding led to miserable living conditions in and out of houses. Many people threw out their trash and waste onto the street and the lack of a sanitation and sewer system also led to dangerous living conditions. He's not going to lead humanity."

  • 21. An Summary Of The Story Of 'Anything Is Possible' The phrase 'anything is possible' became a mantra in Jack's life. It was easy to believe when the days were filled with ambition, prosperity, and fortune. He became presumptuous; blinded by the belief that he was untouchable. It must have been a result of all his doubts being washed away by the sound of trumpets and glimpses of a pretty girl's thighs. However, the allure of that lifestyle withered with the publication of each and every article regarding the stock market. The course pages of the paper spoke of declining percentages, monetary loss, and eventually, an economic crisis. The all too familiar mask of desperation was indisputably distinct on the men and women surrounding Jack. They were hungry, for something much more than food. Jack himself could understand, he couldn't remember the last time he felt content. The majority of his time and energy was exhausted by the apprehension of a time when he would be incapable of feeding his family. The day's proximity was too close for comfort, especially considering he hadn't been employed for a number of months now. He heard stories sometimes, stories of men who created problems just for a pay check. Mickey, a man he was long ago acquainted with, was rumoured to have initiated forest fires in order to be employed by the fire department. Jack rued the day the state of his situation declined so severely he had no other choice than to resort to such disconcerting acts. He wondered if the men and women surrounding him had ever envisioned themselves participating in such delinquency. It was that moment Jack became conscious of the fact that these people had lives, comprised of their own experiences, desires, and struggles. • 22. Compare And Contrast The End Of History And Fukuyama The end of the Cold War was not just a politically significant event but also an important intellectual milestone, where academics, researchers and intellectuals examined the consequences that its end would concur. Fukuyama's The End of History and Huntington's Clash of Civilizations are two of such explorations but contrast each other significantly. Fukuyama predicts a future of peace, or minimal conflict, amidst the spread of Western liberal democracy, a system of government he believes has been actualized as perfect in Hegel's realm of consciousness whereas Huntington argues that conflict will stem from civilizational differences, owing to the rise in civilization–consciousness. Many recurring themes which are apt to surface in these conversations are those such as the woes of artificial creation and the "man is not God" argument. These themes have been so thoroughly explored and exploited that this essay could not possibly generate and original thought within the realms covered by these topics. In order to formulate something remotely fresh and at least relatively interesting, this essay seeks to shift the focus to the less explored dilemmas which Shelley may have purposely or subconsciously woven into the classic novel. Having shown that Shelley intended for Victor to play the role of 'mother' in her analogy, focus will now shift to the ultimate point of the novel: The nurturing provided by a mother (Victor), is the most necessary and vital experience of a child's life and directly affects the person he becomes. From the very beginning, Victor shirks the responsibility of nurture and literally runs from it. As the creature awakes he exclaims: "breathless horror and disgust filled my heart. Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created; I rushed out of the room" (Shelley 58). The Monster then immediately assumes the role of infant in the relationship as Victor says, "His eyes were fixed on me. His jaws opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks" (Shelley 59). In the normal human realm this situation would be met with a dozen tear–filled eyes seeking to hold and coddle the creation. Unfortunately for the Monster, no such treatment is offered by Victor.Frankenstein leaves the Monster to fend for himself. The horrible consequences of this lack of nurturing follow with intensity and frequency. This is proven by the rapidly building sense of confusion and loneliness within the monster. Feelings which are only multiplied by society's general rejection of him. The Monster laments to Victor upon their reunion on these feelings, "no distinct ideas occupied my mind: all was confused. • 24. Who Is Truly Evil In Lord Of The Flies For centuries, philosophers have debated the question of whether man is truly evil. William Golding strikes this question in his highly realistic novel, Lord of The Flies. The story is set in a tropical island during World War 2 when a plane is shot down holding British schoolboys. No adults survive and they are left to govern themselves until they are rescued. Through Jack, Golding demonstrates what will happen to man when law and order are taken away, and that ultimately man will choose safe gray over civility. In the beginning, Jack shows up as head boy of the choir. Jack thinks he should lead the boys on the island because he already leads his choir."I ought to be chief, because I'm chapter chorister and head boy," (Golding 22). This is the first time we see Jack's wanting of power. Jack has led before and sees how much power and strength comes with it. This makes him want more, rather than having a civil vote, and choose who the leader should be. He becomes power hungry and always wants more. This, Golding proves that man will choose savagery over order and decorum.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One thing he gave up was peace. This is the start of the break between Ralph's group and Jack's group. Since Jack is so power hungry, he does not like it when people try to put him in his place. Charles Lipson in "Reliable Partners: How Democracies Have Made a Separate Peace," argues that Democratic Peace Theory offers an explanation as to why democracies, in particular, have avoided the war front. For example, the theory analyses the relation between liberal states and between liberal states and non–liberal states, leaving aside a clear explanation of why non–liberal states have a tendency to go to war higher than liberal ones or the relation between non–liberals. Additionally, it does not take into consideration that "non–democracies are just as capable of establishing peace both amongst themselves and also with democracies" (Tziarras, 2012). Thus, this perception of critical–solving through peace has become a shared norm between states since leaders in one democratic state will suppose and expect the other democratic state will act in the same manner, smoothing the conflicts and differences between them in a peaceful way. Fukuyama goes even further to prove his point by showing that the new philosophies on government created since the oncoming of democracy, (Communism, Socialism, etc.) have ultimately failed and democracy has prevailed in its place. In the Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, Samuel Huntington argues that the primary political actors in the 21st century will be civilizations and that the primary conflicts will be conflicts between these civilizations rather then between nation states. From this quote (which was Jack said): "I think I can last. I don't want this bohunk to stop me." He must be thinking about something just to finish this fight before the game ends. No matter how. I think Jack thought so. And take a look at this quote: "He (means Jack) certainly did used to make the fellows he fought hate boxing. That was why he hated Richie Lewis so. He never got Richie's goat. Richie Lewis always had about three new dirty things Jack could not do. Jack was as safe as a church all the time he was in there, as long as he was strong." I think he had prepared well for this "dirty thing" before the gong of the last round rang. He had prepared to do something bad to finish this fight because he told Jerry and John that he knew he could not stand any longer in this match. According to Doyle and other advocates of the democratic peace theory, liberal democratic states have been able to maintain peaceful relations amongst themselves, but are prone to wage war against non–democratic regimes. I will use the case study of the 'Trent affair' to provide evidence of how war was avoided. London has already given away the ending, as a result of his constant focus of the effect the environment has on the man not knowing the means of survival that the dog knows. Lured to the plot of the story, we keep on reading always anticipating the danger of the climate to overcome the man. "On the other hand, there was no keen

  • 41. The Importance of Companionship Essay "In this prison it is only in human intercourse that I can pretend to find consolation" (Shelley 191), writes Mary Shelley on January 18th, 1824, to describe her extreme state of loneliness two years after her husband's passing. This passage shows how lack of companionship can make the world seems empty, while an abundance of companionship will fill the lives of those who are so blessed to possess it. In many novels we can see how the protagonist always has their confidante, or someone who they will turn to when they are filled with despair and agony. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is no different. Each character has a need for the presence of a kind and loving soul in their life, or they could be turned into creatures of misery and anguish. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "I felt suddenly, and for the first time during many months, calm and serene joy. I welcomed my friend..." (Shelley 37) shows his happiness when Clervel arrives, for a moment he even forgets the creature he had created. He says: "With this deep consciousness of what they owed to the being to which they had given life... I received a lesson of patience, of charity, and of self–control..." (Shelley 16), in which you see how the parent of a child understands that the child needs a caring, loving hand in order to grow up with a caring, loving heart. Victor seems to have forgotten this lesson that his parents taught him when he is repulsed by his creation, of whom he was so sure that "... no father would claim the gratitude of his child as I should so completely..." (Shelley 32), yet he rejects the monster because of its hideous appearance. "All men hate the wretched; how then, must I be hated, who am miserable beyond all living things! Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me, they creature, to whom thou art bound by ties only dissoluble by the annihilation of one of us" (Shelley 83). This passage is very enlightening as to how companionship or lack thereof can affect one greatly. The monster that Victor Frankenstein created was wretched in his ugliness. He felt as if "when [he] looked around [he] saw and heard of none like [him]" (Shelley 105). This 'monster' did not want be "a blot upon the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Othello and Frankenstein Essay From Man to Monster When monsters are thought of a very distinct picture comes to mind. An ugly creature that is out for blood, born into a life where causing misery is his driving force. Do these features really define what a monster is; works of literature like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Shakespeare's Othello tell quite a different story. Monsters are not born but made just as people are not born evil but can sometimes end up there. Othello and the Monster start of as good men looking to be part of society but were pushed out because of what others perceived them to be. This caused them to mentally and physically isolate themselves from everyone allowing hatred to take over. Iago and Frankenstein also helped to instill thoughts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since Othello is being manipulated he finds it hard to be around any one causing him to separate himself from his loved ones and colleagues. When asking to speak with Desdemona to question her on her infidelity he tells her, "Get you to bed on th' instant. I will be returned/ forth with. Dismiss your attendant there. Look't be/ done." (Shakespeare IV, iii, 7–9). He is uncomfortable talking to her in the presence of Emilia, almost like an outsider being involved would confuse him further. His separation from all other characters other than Iago keeps him from knowing the truth. This causes his mind to run wild and come up with reasons that justify him in his monstrous actions that have become more frequent. However, in comparison the Monsters physical isolation causes him to mentally isolate himself. After being abandon by Frankenstein the Monster is forced to live on his own in the woods. Realizing that human kind will never truly accept him he asks Victor to create him a mate stating, "I am alone and miserable man will not associate with me" (Shelley, 118). When Victor ultimately denies the Monster of companionship he becomes enraged again continuing to lose his faith in mankind. The Monsters physical segregation fuels his mental isolation whole Othello's mental isolation fuels his physical segregation. Othello and the Monster are also mentally isolated in very different ways. Othello's mental isolation is driven by Iago's manipulation. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Francis Fukuyama 's The End Of History Life of Ideology, Life of Conflict: Francis Fukuyama and Samuel Huntington In Francis Fukuyama 's "The End of History?" published in 1989, he posits that with the end of the Cold War, humanity is reaching a point where Western liberal democracy and economic structure is the highest form of ideological development. Other ideologies (communism, fascism, etc.) are vestigial forms of thinking destined to fail and disappear in an inevitable progression towards a liberal system (Fukuyama 1989). In "The Clash of Civilizations?" published in 1993, Samuel Huntington writes that the world is divided into civilizations, based on culture (not ideology or economic factors), and that the conflicts of the future (and some in the present) will be based on divisions along those lines. These include, according to Huntington, "Western, Confucian, Japanese, Islamic, Hindu, Slavic–Orthodox, Latin American and possibly African..." (Huntington 1993, 25). While these theories are seemingly compatible at first glance – Fukuyama 's Westernliberalism can be the victor in Huntington 's war of civilizations – there is a major difference, and some important reasons for this difference, which we can find in the authors ' pasts. I believe that the major difference is Fukuyama 's faith in a victory for Western liberalism. While Huntington is satisfied with showing that other civilizations/cultures will clash with the West 's, Fukuyama is confident that the West is already on its way to victory. We can ...
