Trying to get an accurate trend in polar bears is difficult due to the geographical areas polar bears
live and due to the fact that there are 5 countries that have polar bears living in their boarders and
not every country is dong scientific research on polar bear populations. The Russians, Norwegians
and Danes have never completed a full population inventory so it is impossible to know what is the
current population and what the status of those populations are. The 2008 COSEWIC Status Report
says that polar bear populations have "increased over the past few decades" but is now declining.
Out of the subpopulations in Canada, 4 are declining, 7 are stable or increasing and for 2 a trend

What will be the fate of the polar bear? The polar bear is an important keystone predator in the
Arctic and as such, their presence is crucial for controlling seal populations as well as offering a

The polar bear is the largest carnivorous bear. They spend much of their time on the Arctic sea ice
making the polar bear considered to be a marine mammal (National Geographic, 2016). The polar
bears body characteristics are adapted for the cold. Their fur is thicker than other species of bear and
the fur covers around their paws to keep traction on the sea ice (Polar Bears International, 2016). A
thick layer of blubber beneath their fur provides buoyancy and insulation for the extremely cold
conditions (National Geographic, 2016). The polar bears average lifespan in the wild is twenty to
twenty–five years. The male polar bears weight varies from 550 to 1,320 pounds while the female
polar bears weight averages from 200 to 700 pounds. From nose to tail a male polar bear is eight to
nine feet long while a female is six to seven feet long (Defenders of Wildlife, 2016). Polar bears are
highly dependent on the condition of the ice region (Stirling et al. 1999).
Polar bears are solitary as adults except when they are breeding, raising cubs, or get attracted to a

There are nineteen subpopulations of polar bears. Eight of those populations are declining, and it it

Oil and gas business is moving towards the north because the wells in the southern areas are drying
up. When the polar bears fur comes in contact with oil spills it can reduce the insulating effect of the

photographer Paul Nicklen and Sea Legacy filmmakers when they arrived on Baffin Island in late
summer. They came face to face with a shocking sight – a polar bear, starved and slowly dying.
"We stood there crying–filming with tears rolling down our cheeks," said Nicklen.
In the video, the polar bear was limping and hanging by a thread of life. The animal had a thin and
bony frame, covered with white fur, while its back legs were likely suffering from muscle atrophy

Global warming is the recent and ongoing rise of temperature on a global scale. Over the past

from escaping back into space to keep the Earth from freezing, this is called the Greenhouse Effect.

The fur of a polar bear acts as a dense insulator, preventing almost all heat loss. In fact, adult males

black, and it covers up a layer of fat that can be up to 4.49 inches thick. This thick layer of fat helps
keep the polar bear warm in the water, since wet fur acts as a poor insulator. The polar bear's small

The Ursus Maritimus, otherwise known as the polar bear, has walked this planet with their massive
webbed paws for hundreds of years. They have sustained many different difficulties in life but the
most recent issue, global warming, is one that these animals just might not overcome on their own.
