Ryan Mclean Success
In a perfect world, we would all be successful from the first day of school. However, such a perfect
world does not exist within our reality. For most of us, success is determined not by how well we
start the race of life, but how well we get back up when we fall over. Through failure and
redemption comes wisdom. That wisdom is what makes my stepfather Ryan Mclean, a networker
for Broadband, a success. When asked how he evaluated success he responded, "success is
determined by how happy you are and how little you have to worry. If you can survive without a
struggle and can find happiness in what you are doing, then you are successful". What is interesting
about Mr. Mclean's view on success is how it is applicable to any economic group. A wealthy

Case Study on Engstrom
Discussion: 14746 Re: Case Memo #1: Engstrom Auto Mirror Plant Issues: Though the Scanlon
plan was effective when it was implemented, there are now several potential issues existing in
Engstrom. The employees are no longer seeing the benefits of the incentive plan that originally
showed them bounty. They do not trust the system of bonuses, or the methods by which they are
calculated, and by extension are beginning to distrust management entirely. They are starting to
observe a lack of fairness in payment, valuing relative over concrete compensation. Ultimately,
employees as a whole are beginning to be more individually minded as opposed to having a group
mentality. This is the main cause of Engstrom's problems. The Scanlon plan is ... Show more content

Industrial Revolution : A Time Of Economic Success
Although the Industrial Revolution is widely referred as a time of economic success, and very often
benefited the rich. The Industrial Revolution occurred during the eighteenth century and was a time
of innovation, but it is clear that present time has made several improvements, especially in working
conditions. The working conditions were harsh and unlike the working conditions of present time
child labor was very prevalent in the period of the Industrial Revolution, in addition to this there
were low wages and almost no work safety as for present time, many laws and policies have been
placed in order to ensure better working conditions.
Mass production played a big role in the Industrial Revolution and its working conditions. The
Industrial Revolution was a time of progress in terms of new machines and technology being used in
manufacturing products. With a stronger demand for all kinds of products there was an even bigger
demand for a larger workforce, which also varied in gender and age. Child labor was fairly common
during this period; children were hired to perform some of the tasks the adults were unable to
perform. Such as working in mines that involved small crawl areas or in textile factories where their
small fingers could fix broken threads. Working conditions were not only harsh on children, but also
for the adults. As a result of mass production, people often worked long hours with almost no rest.
Consequently, these long working hours lead to accidents,

Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers
Like no other before it, Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers gives insight into a world of success only a
select few are able to view firsthand. Gladwell portrays date of birth, economic status, and obstacles
that are overcome by luck rather than perseverance as the key ingredients for a recipe of triumph.
Time and education seem to be the underlying factors while socio–economic status also plays a
sizable role in determining who succeeds and who does not. While I do not consider myself an
outlier currently, as so many of my peers and schoolmates enjoy what I enjoy, it is very clear that,
given the opportunities afforded to me, it may not be long before I am considered an outlier and
achieve success, both on a monetary and mental level.
Joe Flom, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From a young age, accomplishment is associated first with monetary gain and then with going to a
good college. While my peers and I are currently fixated on the latter, Outliers has shown us there is
no need to be. With Nobel prize winners coming from anywhere from MIT to Holy Cross and
Stanford to Rollins (Gladwell, 81–82), success is not determined by the higher learning institution
one chooses to go to, although it certainly does not hurt to attend a prestigious one. As I look to the
application process I am deterred by many things that should send me towards success. Being a
Caucasian, upper–middle class citizen, I am perhaps the most replaceable student in the world with
thousands just like me, hoping for the same chance I look forward too. However, I feel it is what I
have done in the summers that will set me apart. Karl Alexander realized that privileged students
tend to 'outlearn' underprivileged children over the summer, something I am beginning to see more
clearly. This past summer, I was fortunate enough to be part of the 6–percent accepted to the
Stanford Pre–Collegiate Summer Institutes for Business and Entrepreneurship. It took only a few
days to realize that I was the only true 'white kid'. With the majority coming from Asian descent, the
only other kid at the camp who may have been Caucasian came from a Panamanian family. As I
noticed this, I realized

Essay about Business Challenges
1. The most significant challenge to business success you see in this rapidly changing global
economy; One significant challenge to business success in this rapidly changing global economy is
that many business are focused on efficiency and economic of scales. Just like the example provided
by Michael H. Hugo on Chapter 1, many companies are focused on lowering operating cost as much
as possible. This is causing for executives not leave any room for unpredicted changes limiting the
company's ability to respond to customer's changing needs. 2. An organization that has been

While this is a practice enforced throughout the company, it was necessary to make sure that this

company. 3. How the Marketplace simulation incorporates these challenges into simulation game
play; The Marketplace simulation incorporates these challenges by providing student with real–
world business problems and roles. Team members are challenged to make decisions and used
critical thinking in order to solve this problems virtually. While The Marketplace gives the team the
tolls necessary to have effective communication, ultimately each team members contributes to the
overall success of the team, just like in a real business situation. 4. How your readings and
individual self–assessment work provide potential solutions to these challenges. The unit's readings
have provided many solutions to the challenges businesses encounter nowadays. To this day, there
are many companies that have business plans that concentrate strictly in lowering operating cost, cut
budgets as much as possible and overwork workers that already are overworked. Some of this
solutions include: * Thinking of the costumer's needs and being able to respond to their ever
changing needs * Management needs to be transparent and make sure to communicate with
employees, especially when the organizations is making

1). Some of the reasons customer–contact service employees are vital in a company are * They are
the service. * They are the organization in the customer 's eyes. * They are the brand. * They are

Customers
Customers also have an important role in the success of a business. A business cannot be successful
unless there are customers. Several work fields requires customer input for service creation such as
or haircuts, annual exam, and full service restaurant. The clients input customize a standard service.
The provision of the service requires the customer purchase. Customer input (information material)
is necessary for an adequate outcome, but the service firm provides the service. Jobs where
customer presence is required during service delivery are airline travel, motel stay, and fast–food
restaurant.
Customers play a variety of roles in the service experience. Some of those roles are productive
resource, contributor to quality, satisfaction and value; and as competitor to the service organization.
Customer as a productive resource for example, in contributing information and effort in the

Chinese Entrepreneurs in Singapore: Paths to Success Essay
Chinese Entrepreneurs in Singapore: Paths to Success
Due to the economic hardships and threat of Japanese invasion in China in the first half of the 20th
century, many men left their homeland in search of success and opportunities abroad. One of the
places that many of them migrated to was Singapore. This new and foreign place was fraught with
obstacles; however, some of these Chinese men eventually achieved great success. The success of
these Chinese entrepreneurs in Singapore was not only due to their personal determination, but it
was also contingent upon their social ties, and the economic and political conditions. In the
following essay, the experiences of Ng Teow Yhee and Chew Choo Keng will be referred to
extensively to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fearing for his life, Ng went abroad with the goal in mind of obtaining a stable job that would allow
him to afford three meals a day and earn enough money to send home to his parents so that they
would not have to suffer so much. Initially, he did not plan on going to Singapore because of the
negative impressions he had about it; however, since he was unable to obtain a permit in the
Philippines, he was forced to go to Singapore anyways. (Chan & Chiang,
51) Similarly, Chew had no intention of going abroad but was forced to because of the war.
However, his situation was a bit different–in
1934, he actually voluntarily registered for conscription. (Chan &
Chiang, 89) His parents disapproved and sent him abroad to earn a living. Thus, he arrived in
Singapore in 1936. By that time, he had made up his mind only to succeed and earn money to send
back to his parents in order to make them happy. (Chan & Chiang, 90–91) This shows that from the
beginning, both these men had the determination to improve their own, as well as their families'
financial situations and well–being. They had the initial drive towards economic innovation and
risk–taking, which eventually allowed them to achieve great success. However, their hardworking
disposition was not the only precondition necessary to facilitate successful entrepreneurship and
thus should not be considered to be only factor that lead to their success, since in many cases, others

Without it, we wouldn't be able to inform others around us on how we feel, what we desire or even

Capitalism: The Forefront of Global Economic Success
Arguably the most dominant economic system throughout history, Capitalism is both a political and
commercial structure in which the production as well as management of goods and services are
privately owned and operated in contrast to state or federal government. The origin of this booming
fiscal policy could be attributed to various different factors such as the Industrial Revolution and an
increasing interest in the investment of securities. The spirit of entrepreneurialism and the hunger for
profit has led corporations and businesses [whether big or small] to inadvertently create a system

The cartoon depicts the mind of a supporter for the OWS (Occupy Wall Street) movement as having

America. While it is common knowledge that the top 1% of income earners in the United States own
approximately 40% of the nation's wealth, the national median income is roughly $52,000 as
opposed to the global median income of $10,000. It appears that the advocates for the Occupy Wall

a small portion of the nation retains most of its wealth. Based on some of the demands that Occupy
Wall Street rallied for such as free education, guaranteed living wage regardless of employment and
the outlaw of credit reporting agencies, one may argue that these people desired a Marxist or more

Outliers
By Malcolm Gladwell
The Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell attempts to explain the reasons why people become successful
in both controlled and uncontrolled environment. He uses different stories and studies to explain
what makes a person who there are. For example, in chapter one Gladwell says that successful
hockey players if born early in the calendar year this will make them stand out physically among
other boys who are several months younger than they are. Gladwell says that over time, the
opportunities that these players have has help them build up to make them better players. So,
Gladwell uses a sociological perspective to try to explain the reasons for people's success. ... Show

When we look at outliers, when we look at success stories, if we look closely enough, we see lives
with opportunity from the start. To illustrate the importance of culture in success, Gladwell relates a
story of a Colombian pilot who most likely crashed a plane because, even with diminishing fuel, he
wasn't assertive enough to stand up to the intimidating control tower agents and demand to land.
Cultures that encourage passive submission to hierarchy, or who phrase their questions in subtle,
vague euphemisms, may find themselves at a disadvantage in some situations, such as the airplane
cockpit. Other times, your culture works for you. For example, Gladwell explains that Asians who
spent centuries working in rice paddies, a type of farming that requires meticulous care all year long,
passed on this work ethic to their posterity. Many of the inheritors of the rice–paddy culture apply
the same diligence in their schoolwork. This diligence, of course, brings more success.
I found this book to be an eye opener to many things that I never really paid attitude to. We all want
to believe that where we come from and who we are does not affect what we will be come. Yes all
have heard it before you can be what you want to be as long as you work hard for it. But really
many things that people would like to be are out of reached for the simple fact that you are not in the
right class of people. Even thought

Flint : A History Of Economics Success And Failure
The events in Flint, Michigan are not extraordinary or surprising by any means. The occurrences,
are not something that the world hasn't seen, heard, read or experienced before. The water crisis in
Flint has simply been displayed in another light. Flint has a history of economics success and
failure. With time, the prosperity from dirty industrial innovation, fallen under the wrong
administration and minds, has led to turmoil for those with silent voices in the political economy. As
a highly impoverished town the citizens of flint have tried to scream against the industries and
government who was meant to protect and lead flint out of turmoil, but these voices have only
echoed into a hole of environmental injustice.
Let's begin with a brief summary of the events that lead to the crisis in Michigan. On April 25, 2016
city administrators decided to switch Flint's water supply Detroit's system to the Flint river (Lurie,
2016). After only a few months, residents began complaining about foul smells and serious health
concerns, such as hair loss and severe rashes. On October 2014, general motors, the city's largest
source of revenue for decades, stops using municipal water due to its corrosive effects on auto parts
(Lin, Rutter, & Park, 2016). Despite multiple complaints and health concern reports, in March 2014,
the Veolia consultant group did not report any significant finding of lead or toxic chemicals. (need

W. E. B. Dubois Dark Princess
People, no matter their race or color, have always wanted to be successful, live comfortably, and
provide for their families. While the definitions for success and comfort have changed over time, a
constant truth is that hard work and sacrifice are required to reach these goals. Moving from an
individual to the societal or political level, for many races and nations, progress can measure
success. Ethnic groups want progress towards equality, while nations, particularly those in Asia,
Africa, and the Middle East, want progress towards economic and industrial progress towards
leveling with the West; they also wish for political respect and autonomy. Since the end of the

Examining W.E.B. Dubois' novel Dark Princess, the characters of Sammy Scott and Sara Andrews
exemplify individualism completely. The "honorable" Sammy Scott was a leading black politician in
Chicago. Dubois described Sammy's beginnings: "...in 1910 by selling the right to gamble, keep
houses of prostitution, and commit petty theft, to certain men, white and black, who paid him in
cash" (Dubois, pg. 82). Sammy is completely corrupt, wanting power and money for himself. He
misses his opportunity as a politician to help his district, make positive changes that could improve
the lives of the black people all around him. Instead he chooses to be a gangster, promoting
gambling and prostitution, and maintaining a criminal undertone in Chicago. Sara Andrews was
equally calculating. Dubois describes Sara on page 84 as having "a good intellect without moral
scruples and a clear idea of the communal and social value of virginity, respectability, and good
clothes". Dubois is saying she is cunning, and in tune with what is expected in society. She knows
what she needs to do to be successful, and like Sammy, she wants all of the power for herself.
Sammy and Sara both lived a dog eat dog existence, and were willing to sacrifice others on their
way to the top. It is important to note that Dubois recognized individualism as a major obstacle for
racial progress, and Sammy and Sara demonstrated the issues stemming from individualism in Dark
Princess. Unfortunately, others failed to capitalize on Dubois' foresight. Today there is an equal lack
of cohesiveness amongst African Americans, due to varying socioeconomic levels. At the time of
civil rights, a black middle class was able to forge ahead and have success. This professional level is
still here today, but what also exists today is the bottom of

Success In George Gladwell's Individualistic Means Of Success
Success has long been viewed as a result of an individual's determination and in some cases, innate
talent. Said individual would generally be of a less fortunate background and rise to triumph with
seemingly no assistance from others. Conversely, Gladwell argues against this individualistic
approach to analyzing success. He instead argues that "It is only by asking where they [successful
people] are from that we can unravel the logic behind who succeeds and who doesn't." Gladwell
looks deeper into the environment from which the successful spring and, using logic, thoroughly
explains every aspect that lead to their success.
Texting has revolutionized the way humans communicate in more ways than merely increasing the
speed at which they transmit information. For Instance, Common texting abbreviations such as "lol"
or "rotfl" have become ingrained into the culture of many first world countries and are now used in
everyday conversation. Though the individual speaking or typing these abbreviations is not actually
transmitting recognizable English words, there is a mutual understanding between the ones
communicating of what each series of letters means. The meanings of the words are not obscured in
any way.
When biologists examine the ecology of an organism, they observe not only that organism's traits
but also its environment. The biologist looks at things such as the surrounding organisms and how
much of a threat they are to an organism's survival, the accessibility of resources to the organism. In
short, the biologist looks at the organism's environment and sees what advantages it has had that
allowed it to survive, and in some cases, thrive. This is similar to the way in which Malcolm
Gladwell describes "Accumulative Advantage". When Gladwell analyzes a successful person's rise
to triumph, he takes into account the person's environment. He looks at things such as birth date,
social attitude, economic trends, and genealogy to try to piece together what opportunities could
have been an advantage and what advantages could have accumulated (hence the term Accumulative
Advantage) in a person's life to propel them to their current successful status.

China 's Economic Success Of The United States
In 2014, what had been predicted numerous times throughout the past decade had finally occurred.
According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), China had overtook the United States (US) to
become the world's largest economy, with their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measured by way of
Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), where GDP is adjusted to accommodate the relative prices in each
market, was estimated to be at $17.6 trillion compared to $17.4 trillion for the US (Fray 2014). This
stood testament to the success of the economic reforms in the wake of the death of Chairman Mao
Zedong, led by Deng Xiao Ping beginning in 1978, in revitalising the Chinese economy to the
superpower status that it enjoys today (Zhu, Webber & Benson 2010, p. 9). However this measure of
China's economic success is but one side of the coin. According to China's official poverty standard,
poverty fell from 65% to 10% in 1981 to 2004 (World Bank 2009, pp. iii–v) and while this marked
reduction is exceptional, the way these statistics are obtained reveals part of the problem. The
Chinese government's official poverty line is one of the lowest in the world and if poverty were to
be measured by international standards, in 2005, China would have 254 million people under the US
$1.25 poverty line set by the World Bank, the second largest number of poor in the world apart from
India, compared to 15 million under official standards. This shows that while China's tremendous
economic growth is undeniable, its

Ralph Waldo Emerson's Definition Of Success
S for Success
"To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded
(____)". This quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson captures his paradigm of success. People strive to
achieve success and create goals to obtain it; however, a single–minded interpretation of success
leads to missing out on opportunities. The presence of challenges provides the opportunity for
success and success comes with the determination to overcome the challenges.
Early in the fifteenth century, the word "success" first appeared. Developing from Latin word
"successus", it was first defined as "the fortune (good or bad) befalling anyone in a particular
situation". In the mid 1600's, the definition of success– "a prosperous achievement of something
attempted"– was altered and fits the current use of the word. Appearing in the Oxford English
Dictionary in 1978, the latest entry of the definition of success is defined as "an instance of an
achievement" ("Success"). The broadness of the term "achievement" ... Show more content on

The Economic Success Of The 21st Century
In the 21st century it is correct to claim that our interconnected world is becoming smaller. With
globalization, the nature of economy and politics is vividly transforming. United States is the best
example as the trail blazer of the new policies, changes and with that, U.S. is a role model for
world's powers. Looking from the economist's perspective of how to explain such advantage, open
door trade is one of the factors that explain its success. Great number of economists stands unified in
support of free trade. This paper will discuss some major points that revolve around the central idea
which explains that in order to achieve economic success in today's world requires free trade, which
entails liberalization to attract international ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Krugman 1987,131) Free trade supporters make a point that if we don't move toward liberalization,
the gravity of protectionism and political interests will pull us back–"bicycle theory". (Bergsten
1996, 109). The successful example of bicycle moving forward is the Uruguay Round conclusion.
(Bergsten 1996, 109). Following that NAFTA and such, have made a significant progress in
resolving debate in the international trade arena. Liberalist economists insist that with openness
toward international trade, countries benefit in multiple segments and knowledge is one of the major
exchanges which are crucial for improvement. ( O'Brien & Williams 2013,112) Therefore, it is
important to understand liberalist perspective at first. Economic liberalist view human nature acting
rational in order to maximize their self–interest. This theory strongly support the thought where
individuals when acting rationally create markets which produce, distribute and consume goods
function best free. This way international wealth is maximized with exchange of goods and services
which is also a comparative advantage based theoretical aspect. (Mingst &Toft, 2104, 310) With
Ricardo's comparative advantage, it's important to mention specialization of a commodity that a
specific country can produce more efficiently in exchange for another commodity.

A Nation 's Economic Success And International...
A nation's economic success and international competitiveness depends upon the policies it set.
These policies are dependent on a variety of factors such as foreign direct investment and trade.
According to Phillips et al (2006), the global financial platform has been showing transitional
change over the last two decades in which foreign aid as a source of capital flow is drying up.
Markusen and Venables (1998) explained that financial institutions like the IMF and the World Bank

countries. In this respect, economic policy makers in governments of both developing and

FDI plays in the economic growth process of the host country. A good number of the studies and
discussions show that there exists a strong correlation between FDI and economic progression. In
addition to being an engine for diffusion of knowledge and transfer of technology, FDI also
stimulates international trade, domestic investment, expands host nation 's domestic savings, and
increases the host country 's foreign exchange reserves adjusting its Balance of Payment post. These
factors increase the economic growth of the host nation. Exports are also regarded as a means of
economic growth. They facilitate production of goods and services efficiently by exploiting and
attaining a competitive advantage over other nations. The success stories of East and South East
Asian countries such as Singapore and Malaysia suggest that foreign direct investment is a powerful
tool to promote export for the host country. Grossman and Helpman (1993) explain that a number of

over local companies in regard to export performance. These MNCs bring intangible assets such as

Malcolm Gladwell Idea Of Success Essay
1. Judge the irony of the description on the back cover of the book as "self–help" when the book is
all about how one cannot help themselves when becoming successful. 2. Malcolm Gladwell makes
the idea of success confusing. He is constantly pointing out individuals who have it and do not yet
all individuals have do different things in their lives that might be construed as successful. What
makes Gladwell's mother as successful as Bill Gates? Explain Gladwell's ideas of success.
3. Figures show that those who go to good colleges with poor grades are just as successful. Debate
the pros and cons of affirmative action based on Gladwell's arguments in the book.
4. Marita is very self–sufficient and spends more time on her homework than doing normal kid stuff.
Gladwell says that this will make her successful in the future, but school teachers have told me that
hard worker good habits worsen as time goes along due to stress. Explain your take on the ideal.

Sustainable Economic Growth And The Success Of A Country
Abstract
Last few decades we have seen a changing notion of what constitutes a successful nation. According
to the old school approach, 'sustainable economic growth' is primarily seen as the best way to make
a "successful country". There are a few questions that arise as to what factors contribute to the
success of a country. Is sustainable economic growth the best way to get there?
A country comprises of its citizens and the two most important components contributing to the
success of a country are the health and happiness of its citizens. Wealth becomes an important aspect
only in a manner where it encourages greater well–being of the citizens.
Another aspect that we need to consider is that of sustainable well–being. The term means
maintaining a balance between environment sustainability and well–being. Thus, countries must
provide well–being within environmental limits.
Economic growth as measured by gross domestic product doesn 't really tell us much about citizens '
general well–being. Here we will be discussing about the change in approach towards what we
consider a successful nation today.

The Influence Of Roosevelt's New Deal
Success is a term that can be used in many different ways. In this case, it is stating the fact of if the
new deal helped the Great Depression and the economic drought that we were in, then it was a
success. The New Deal was a series of programs created by Franklin Delano Roosevelt designed to
help the economy. The Great Depression lasted from 1929–1939. It began with the great stock
market crash on October 27. It was the greatest economic depression the United States had ever
experienced. President Roosevelt did his best to fix the issues. After analyzing multiple primary
sources it is shown that it can be pulled both ways to whether it was a success or not. The New Deal
created by the 32nd president of the U.S was more of a failure than a ... Show more content on

People expressed their feelings or thoughts of the great depression in many different ways including
that of songs or speeches. Many songs included lyrics that symbolized wanting freedom to a place
that was not suffering. Reading the lyrics of "No Depression in Heaven" by The Carter Family
hinted some of the troubles that our nation was dealing with. Within the lyrics they stated that "In
that bright land there'll be no hunger, no orphan children crying for bread, no weeping widows toil
or struggle, no shrouds, no coffins, and no dead". They would like to go to a place with no
depression. Some would say hope played a big factor during this time period, but hope could not be
upheld if the goal is not reached. This New Deal never ended the economic drought that the U.S was
stuck in. Many programs such as the Agriculture Adjustment Administration grew taxes and led to
more starvation. "Farmers killed off certain animals and crops as they were told to by the AAA.
Many could not believe that the federal government was condoning such an action when many
Americans were starving". Although there was a counter to this issue. The WPA did provide meals
for hungry children. "In the past year and a half 80,000,000 hot well–balanced meals have been
served at the rate of 500,000 daily in 10,00 schools throughout the country"( Woodward 4). This
may have helped, but the hunger caused by the AAA could not be balanced by this act.No hope

Signet Jewelers Case Study
Signet Jewelers Limited, modern day's largest producer, distributor, and retailer of diamond jewelry,
is an extensive company spread over several branches of stores. The current Chief Executive Officer
of this company is Virginia C. Drosos, who the company appointed into her new position on the first
of August, 2017, in the place of Mark Light, who shortly prior had stepped down. Despite the fact
that Signet Jewelers is a very prominent seller in America, boasting several thousand stores both
within and without malls across the country, its center is located in Hamilton, Bermuda, putting it in
British territory. From there operates one of the most successful jewelry companies in recent history.
Signet Jewelers claims its origins as a single jewelry store in Surrey, England, first opened in 1949
by Leslie Ratner. From this small beginning point, the company slowly acquired a host of other
successful jewelry chains, making it increasingly powerful and prominent. At first, all these chains
were in England, but eventually, it branched out to America as well, the country would eventually
prove to be its most successful market, and likely saved the company when, in the early 1990s, the
company seemed to hit a dead end. After a few years of rough and dubious times, in which the
company nearly rid itself of its failing UK branch, Signet Jewelers at last resurfaced and returned to
power with a vengeance, even acquiring another jewelry chain after roughly a decade of stagnancy.

The Paradox Of Success Research Paper
Another discipline that widely displays the paradox of finding success through failure is science. In
science there have been many great success stories, where scientists have achieved their success
through failure. An example of this is Thomas Edison, who experienced many setbacks in life but
did not let that stop him from reaching his goals. "Thomas Edison was one of the most productive
inventors in American history. With 1,093 U.S. patents and more in the United Kingdom, France,
and Germany, no other inventor has come close to Edison's output" (Edison, 2007). His resiliency is
what led to him finally getting it right. On his failed attempts, Edison said,
I have not failed 10,000 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving ... Show more

Interestingly enough, Thomas Edison who also struggled with setbacks, was a close friend of Henry
Ford and urged him to pursue his dreams of manufacturing cars. Edison's past experience allowed
him to be able to give him this sound advice. It wasn't always easy for Ford, who grew up knowing
"that an individual could get ahead in the world by working hard. But social or economic conditions
were not an excuse," (Ford, 2003). He worked very hard, despite his economic status to become the
success that he was and still is today. His work ethic and mindset are what pushed him to keep
going, even when things were not going his way. He stated, "You can do anything if you have
enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars," (Ford, 2003). I really
like this metaphor of success, because it is completely true. If we are able to have enthusiasm
towards what we are trying to accomplish, we will be more likely to reach it. This is similar to what
a wise professor of mine says, " If your not having fun, you're not learning." Which goes hand in
hand with success as well, because if you are not enjoying what you are doing than you will not
have any motivation to

Cabela's: The Economic Success Of Retailers
The economic success of retailers greatly depends on their ability to reach customers and meet
customer demands in ways that is convenient for the customer. No longer can retailers expect
customers to only shop at their retail stores. Retailers are required to provide customers with the
multiple shopping channels and flexible fulfillment options that they demand. Companies who fail
to do so will see their customers take their business to competitors who are both willing and able to
serve customers based on consumer demand (xxx)
Cabela's clearly understands customer demands in this regard, and as such, the company invested in
their stores, distribution networks, information technology, and online presence, to become an

Adam Smith: Crucial To Economic Success
Throughout my short life I have experienced many of the economic down turns and some up turns.
People who have worked very hard for 30 years or more have lost their jobs and were forced to go
out into the job market to look for new employment. This proved to be difficult for many. It's not
easy to learn something new after 30 years of service in a particular industry. I have grown up in a
household that taught me if you want to be successful you have to work hard, you will not get
anywhere with a hand out. You have to start at the bottom to get to the top. Adam Smith's views and
opinions appeared to be exactly what I was taught. In the article, Growth Economics and Adam
Smith believed freedom was crucial to economic success. Being able to own your own business and
earn your profits without giving it all to the government is what keeps individuals successful, but
that was the past. Now we are largely taxed for our land, our businesses, the profits we make, as
well as our prosperity. Adam Smith also expressed the belief that those who receive an incentive
will work hard. In this day and age, you have to work hard to prosper. Many people work a couple
jobs to prosper or just to maintain a feeling of livelihood in their households. ... Show more content

Australia 's Economic Success And Growth Rates
Economic Background:
In the past two decades, the Australian economy has been, and continues to be a very strong and
steady economy because of steady GDP growth rates, with an average around 3.5% annually
(Heritage.org). Australia has also benefitted from considerably low inflation and unemployment
rates. Because of these macroeconomic values, Australia is ranked third in the ranking of regional
economies (Heritage.org). The reasons for Australia's ongoing success is mainly because of the
boom in foreign demand of importing the plethora of natural resources and minerals the country
contains, combined with the structural economic policies enacted in the 1980's (The Economist –
Australia's Economy). Australia is also one of the few countries ... Show more content on

The largest slice of Australia's exports go to China, exporting around 31.6% of its total exports,
making China Australia's biggest benefactor to its economy (DFAT). Although the exports mainly
consist of the titanic amount of minerals that Australia mines, China also imports large quantities of
wool, another heavily traded commodity of Australia. One of the leading wool industries, the
Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has said "it is easier to sell fine wool for clothes to China than to
traditional recession–hit markets in Europe" (The Economist – Hitched to the China Wagon).
The exportation of wool in conjunction with the exportation of minerals and ore to China makes
China a strong partner with Australia when it comes to resource trading. China obviously is
dependent on Australia's exportations, making Australia's relations with China a strength of the
overall Australian economy. The Australian economy however, is clearly just as dependent on
China's demand for such commodities. Although Australia greatly benefits from China's demand in
its exports, Australia needs to make sure the trade relations between them don't act as a crutch for
the Australian economy. Recent studies and articles predict China's demand for Australian goods
will be shifting leftward in the near future, possibly impacting Australia's economy, and putting it
into a recession.
Weaknesses of Economy:
When it comes to economic weaknesses, Australia is fairly unique in comparison to other

Destruction of the American Dream in Death of a Salesman...
"We may have different backgrounds, but we believe in the same dream that says this is a country
where anything's possible. No matter who you are. No matter where you come from." –– President
Obama, Commenting on the American Dream
The American Dream is a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and
success. It is the belief that, no matter how poor you begin life, you can achieve upward social
mobility for your family and children. Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, crushes the ethos of the
American Dream. Miller's ability to portray this delusional idea through the life and relationships of
Willy Loman, a typical, low income American, is exquisite. America, in 1949, was experiencing an

those who just do not make it. Willy will not face the truth though. Willy is a failure in life, but he
feels even more so because of the fact that success in the American Dream is supposed to be
available to anyone. This figure has significantly affected his family, especially his sons. He
consistently blames the world throughout the play, such as blaming the teacher for flunking Biff, and
causing his failure at getting a good paying job. He also goes on to blame Chevrolet for the
carburetor tearing up, Bernard for not letting Biff cheat, and eventually realizes it was his entire
fault all along. Once he realizes this, instead of facing the truth about his failure, he commits
suicide.
Many would say that this heart–breaking story of Willy's life epitomizes "moral law". Moral law is
"the indestructible will of man to achieve his humanity (Tragedy and the Common Man)." Basically,
it's man drive to save his pride, or gain sort of power. There is no better example of a man struggling
with moral law than Willy Loman. He not only struggles with the other characters, but with himself.
His inner conflict is exaggerated in his multiple "flashbacks."

Benito Mussolini's development of the National Fascist Party in 1919 (H, 2010) provided great hope
for a suffering nation of Italian people. Although Fascism grew quickly with an optimism of ending
great economic and social turmoil, Mussolini's Fascist ideologies eventually lead to an isolated
nation. By further exploring the history of Benito Mussolini and his radical Fascist ideologies, it is
easy to comprehend the attraction of such a concept, especially during times of immense suffrage.

This belief attempts to have the individual understand that as a group they are more stalwart than

cannot be ruled by the consultation of a majority of individuals as there is a basic inequality
amongst mankind. (Mussolini, 1932) In contrast, the Fascist State is the majority, believing that they
alone retain the best interests of their nation's success and prosperity.
The dogmas represented within the Fascist convictions are essentially erroneous! Without the say so
of the people, a government has a totalitarian reign over the people. It goes back to the concept that
as human's we desire the right for self fulfillment and self rule. When an individual is not allowed to

Benito Mussolini seized power in 1922 when he was appointed Prime Minister, following his

disliked capitalism and the free market. However, post 1922, he came to the realization that he
needed a strong economic plan to retain his office as well as to re–establish Italy as a major power.
Mussolini, like many other dictators, was not an economist and so none of his policies were without

means to them. Success can be perceived to mean achievements in a career, fame in society, quality

its different meaning to other people. These differences are what often separate individuals in their

Both Willy Loman and Troy Maxson have their own belief of what defines the American dream, but
whenever they attempt to instill the same beliefs in their sons, they introduce and repeatedly worsen
the problems of the already strained relationships between family members. The parents mean well

From the beginning pages of Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, the reader is easily able to

did receive attention in the two major Texas political parties (Republican and Democratic).
However, the political parties reveal differing positions and philosophies on ways of tackling the
issue. To be specific, the Democrats believe that infrastructure is important to the future economic
prosperity (LePatner, 2010). Further, the party argues that broadband networks, schools, water
systems, and energy are some of the infrastructures that are readily ripe for investment. As such, the
party hopes that investments in such fields may help address other related issues such as
unemployment too. Sadly, the Democratic Party does not mention how additional funding would be

Summary Of Ain 'T No Makin' It By Jay Macleod
The achievement ideology is the belief encompassed by many people in the United States that
suggest if you work hard, you will climb the ladder of social and economic success. In the novel
Ain't No Makin' It, Jay MacLeod discusses some contrasting views of this ideology between two
groups of lower class Americans living in the same public housing project. One group, the Brothers,
are mostly African American, while the other group, the Hallway Hangers, are mostly Caucasian.
The Brothers grow up in homes with parents who strictly enforce the power of education and have

Ultimately, the two groups end up with jobs that are not too different from one another,
exemplifying the faults in the achievement ideology. Throughout their whole lives, the Brothers'
consistently feel that their limited success is a reflection of their own shortcomings and has nothing
to do with the flawed class or racial systems. They recognize the systems put in place to help lower
class people of color excel, including free public education and affirmative action, but do not realize
that this is not enough to overcome their limited cultural capital and unstable economic foundations.
This also contributes to the Brothers' intersectionality, or their analysis of how factors such as race,
gender, and class interact to shape their life chances. The intersectionality of the Hallway Hangers,
on the other hand, is restricted to the core idea that no matter what they do, they can ever escape the
social binds of the lower class. This intersectionality also falls into place with the idea of habitus,
studied by Pierre Bourdieu. Habitus describes how one sees themselves and where they fit in life.
The Hallway Hangers permanently see themselves in the lower class, while the Brothers aim for
higher aspirations. While the Brothers' exhibit a higher quality of life and ultimately have less

Success to most is the highest point of your life in which you can't keep advancing. To me however,
success is an accomplishment in ones love life, economic stability to support yourself and your

surprisingly somewhat similar to motivation, both start from one small idea, or dream which we
want to become reality like. Walking into school freshman year with the drive to graduate, then

The Economics Of Happiness Is An Indicator Of Economic...
For centuries, economists have deliberated on the most effective ways to promote growth, to
increase employment, to boost consumption and to eliminate poverty, but where does this all lead?
Surely these are all means to an end? Today, some economists may define the end as happiness. This
essay will explore the potential benefits and drawbacks of using happiness as an indicator of
economic success, analyze how it can be measured and examine the current theories on whether
happiness can cause economic growth, or vice versa. Whilst economic growth first and foremost
implies an increase in GDP per capita, increasing happiness can be attributed to many different
determinants such as health, education, stability and inequality. Therefore, the economics of
happiness is a multi–layered and rather subjective area that divides economists when asked whether
happiness can cause economic growth.
To begin with, Stevenson and Wolfers (2008) propose that as countries grow richer, their citizens
report higher levels of satisfaction. This is achieved not only through higher income per capita
levels, but through the expected byproducts of an improving economy such as increases in levels of
education, access to healthcare, opportunities for employment and equality. Non–income
determinants can be weighted against GDP levels to assess whether economic growth does impact
happiness. For example, using the Corruptions Perceptions Index it was found that Sub–Saharan
Africa, one of the poorest

Ryan Mclean Success

  • 1. Ryan Mclean Success In a perfect world, we would all be successful from the first day of school. However, such a perfect world does not exist within our reality. For most of us, success is determined not by how well we start the race of life, but how well we get back up when we fall over. Through failure and redemption comes wisdom. That wisdom is what makes my stepfather Ryan Mclean, a networker for Broadband, a success. When asked how he evaluated success he responded, "success is determined by how happy you are and how little you have to worry. If you can survive without a struggle and can find happiness in what you are doing, then you are successful". What is interesting about Mr. Mclean's view on success is how it is applicable to any economic group. A wealthy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Case Study on Engstrom Discussion: 14746 Re: Case Memo #1: Engstrom Auto Mirror Plant Issues: Though the Scanlon plan was effective when it was implemented, there are now several potential issues existing in Engstrom. The employees are no longer seeing the benefits of the incentive plan that originally showed them bounty. They do not trust the system of bonuses, or the methods by which they are calculated, and by extension are beginning to distrust management entirely. They are starting to observe a lack of fairness in payment, valuing relative over concrete compensation. Ultimately, employees as a whole are beginning to be more individually minded as opposed to having a group mentality. This is the main cause of Engstrom's problems. The Scanlon plan is ... • 5. Industrial Revolution : A Time Of Economic Success Although the Industrial Revolution is widely referred as a time of economic success, and very often benefited the rich. The Industrial Revolution occurred during the eighteenth century and was a time of innovation, but it is clear that present time has made several improvements, especially in working conditions. The working conditions were harsh and unlike the working conditions of present time child labor was very prevalent in the period of the Industrial Revolution, in addition to this there were low wages and almost no work safety as for present time, many laws and policies have been placed in order to ensure better working conditions. Mass production played a big role in the Industrial Revolution and its working conditions. The Industrial Revolution was a time of progress in terms of new machines and technology being used in manufacturing products. With a stronger demand for all kinds of products there was an even bigger demand for a larger workforce, which also varied in gender and age. Child labor was fairly common during this period; children were hired to perform some of the tasks the adults were unable to perform. Such as working in mines that involved small crawl areas or in textile factories where their small fingers could fix broken threads. Working conditions were not only harsh on children, but also for the adults. As a result of mass production, people often worked long hours with almost no rest. Consequently, these long working hours lead to accidents, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers Like no other before it, Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers gives insight into a world of success only a select few are able to view firsthand. Gladwell portrays date of birth, economic status, and obstacles that are overcome by luck rather than perseverance as the key ingredients for a recipe of triumph. Time and education seem to be the underlying factors while socio–economic status also plays a sizable role in determining who succeeds and who does not. While I do not consider myself an outlier currently, as so many of my peers and schoolmates enjoy what I enjoy, it is very clear that, given the opportunities afforded to me, it may not be long before I am considered an outlier and achieve success, both on a monetary and mental level. Joe Flom, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From a young age, accomplishment is associated first with monetary gain and then with going to a good college. While my peers and I are currently fixated on the latter, Outliers has shown us there is no need to be. With Nobel prize winners coming from anywhere from MIT to Holy Cross and Stanford to Rollins (Gladwell, 81–82), success is not determined by the higher learning institution one chooses to go to, although it certainly does not hurt to attend a prestigious one. As I look to the application process I am deterred by many things that should send me towards success. Being a Caucasian, upper–middle class citizen, I am perhaps the most replaceable student in the world with thousands just like me, hoping for the same chance I look forward too. However, I feel it is what I have done in the summers that will set me apart. Karl Alexander realized that privileged students tend to 'outlearn' underprivileged children over the summer, something I am beginning to see more clearly. This past summer, I was fortunate enough to be part of the 6–percent accepted to the Stanford Pre–Collegiate Summer Institutes for Business and Entrepreneurship. It took only a few days to realize that I was the only true 'white kid'. With the majority coming from Asian descent, the only other kid at the camp who may have been Caucasian came from a Panamanian family. As I noticed this, I realized ... Chinese Entrepreneurs in Singapore: Paths to Success Essay Chinese Entrepreneurs in Singapore: Paths to Success Due to the economic hardships and threat of Japanese invasion in China in the first half of the 20th century, many men left their homeland in search of success and opportunities abroad. One of the places that many of them migrated to was Singapore. This new and foreign place was fraught with obstacles; however, some of these Chinese men eventually achieved great success. The success of these Chinese entrepreneurs in Singapore was not only due to their personal determination, but it was also contingent upon their social ties, and the economic and political conditions. Fearing for his life, Ng went abroad with the goal in mind of obtaining a stable job that would allow him to afford three meals a day and earn enough money to send home to his parents so that they would not have to suffer so much. Initially, he did not plan on going to Singapore because of the negative impressions he had about it; however, since he was unable to obtain a permit in the Philippines, he was forced to go to Singapore anyways. (Chan & Chiang, 51) Similarly, Chew had no intention of going abroad but was forced to because of the war. However, his situation was a bit different–in 1934, he actually voluntarily registered for conscription. (Chan & Chiang, 89) His parents disapproved and sent him abroad to earn a living. Thus, he arrived in Singapore in 1936. By that time, he had made up his mind only to succeed and earn money to send back to his parents in order to make them happy. (Chan & Chiang, 90–91) This shows that from the beginning, both these men had the determination to improve their own, as well as their families' financial situations and well–being. They had the initial drive towards economic innovation and risk–taking, which eventually allowed them to achieve great success. However, their hardworking disposition was not the only precondition necessary to facilitate successful entrepreneurship and thus should not be considered to be only factor that lead to their success, since in many cases, others with the same ... Capitalism: The Forefront of Global Economic Success Arguably the most dominant economic system throughout history, Capitalism is both a political and commercial structure in which the production as well as management of goods and services are privately owned and operated in contrast to state or federal government. The origin of this booming fiscal policy could be attributed to various different factors such as the Industrial Revolution and an increasing interest in the investment of securities. While it is common knowledge that the top 1% of income earners in the United States own approximately 40% of the nation's wealth, the national median income is roughly $52,000 as opposed to the global median income of $10,000. It appears that the advocates for the Occupy Wall Street movement are not aware of the benefits of capitalism and are so blinded by the fact that such a small portion of the nation retains most of its wealth. Based on some of the demands that Occupy Wall Street rallied for such as free education, guaranteed living wage regardless of employment and the outlaw of credit reporting agencies, one may argue that these people desired a Marxist or more communist environment. • 24. Outliers Elda Espinoza May 9, 2016 Sociology 101 Outliers By Malcolm Gladwell The Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell attempts to explain the reasons why people become successful in both controlled and uncontrolled environment. He uses different stories and studies to explain what makes a person who there are. For example, in chapter one Gladwell says that successful hockey players if born early in the calendar year this will make them stand out physically among other boys who are several months younger than they are. Gladwell says that over time, the opportunities that these players have has help them build up to make them better players. So, Gladwell uses a sociological perspective to try to explain the reasons for people's success. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we look at outliers, when we look at success stories, if we look closely enough, we see lives with opportunity from the start. To illustrate the importance of culture in success, Gladwell relates a story of a Colombian pilot who most likely crashed a plane because, even with diminishing fuel, he wasn't assertive enough to stand up to the intimidating control tower agents and demand to land. Cultures that encourage passive submission to hierarchy, or who phrase their questions in subtle, vague euphemisms, may find themselves at a disadvantage in some situations, such as the airplane cockpit. Other times, your culture works for you. For example, Gladwell explains that Asians who spent centuries working in rice paddies, a type of farming that requires meticulous care all year long, passed on this work ethic to their posterity. Many of the inheritors of the rice–paddy culture apply the same diligence in their schoolwork. This diligence, of course, brings more success. I found this book to be an eye opener to many things that I never really paid attitude to. We all want to believe that where we come from and who we are does not affect what we will be come. Yes all have heard it before you can be what you want to be as long as you work hard for it. But really many things that people would like to be are out of reached for the simple fact that you are not in the right class of people. Even thought ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. Flint : A History Of Economics Success And Failure The events in Flint, Michigan are not extraordinary or surprising by any means. The occurrences, are not something that the world hasn't seen, heard, read or experienced before. The water crisis in Flint has simply been displayed in another light. Flint has a history of economics success and failure. With time, the prosperity from dirty industrial innovation, fallen under the wrong administration and minds, has led to turmoil for those with silent voices in the political economy. As a highly impoverished town the citizens of flint have tried to scream against the industries and government who was meant to protect and lead flint out of turmoil, but these voices have only echoed into a hole of environmental injustice. Let's begin with a brief summary of the events that lead to the crisis in Michigan. On April 25, 2016 city administrators decided to switch Flint's water supply Detroit's system to the Flint river (Lurie, 2016). After only a few months, residents began complaining about foul smells and serious health concerns, such as hair loss and severe rashes. On October 2014, general motors, the city's largest source of revenue for decades, stops using municipal water due to its corrosive effects on auto parts (Lin, Rutter, & Park, 2016). Despite multiple complaints and health concern reports, in March 2014, the Veolia consultant group did not report any significant finding of lead or toxic chemicals. • 28. W. E. B. Dubois Dark Princess People, no matter their race or color, have always wanted to be successful, live comfortably, and provide for their families. While the definitions for success and comfort have changed over time, a constant truth is that hard work and sacrifice are required to reach these goals. Moving from an individual to the societal or political level, for many races and nations, progress can measure success. Ethnic groups want progress towards equality, while nations, particularly those in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, want progress towards economic and industrial progress towards leveling with the West; they also wish for political respect and autonomy. Since the end of the colonial era, there has been a massive struggle by previously colonized nations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Examining W.E.B. Dubois' novel Dark Princess, the characters of Sammy Scott and Sara Andrews exemplify individualism completely. The "honorable" Sammy Scott was a leading black politician in Chicago. Dubois described Sammy's beginnings: "...in 1910 by selling the right to gamble, keep houses of prostitution, and commit petty theft, to certain men, white and black, who paid him in cash" (Dubois, pg. 82). Sammy is completely corrupt, wanting power and money for himself. He misses his opportunity as a politician to help his district, make positive changes that could improve the lives of the black people all around him. Instead he chooses to be a gangster, promoting gambling and prostitution, and maintaining a criminal undertone in Chicago. Sara Andrews was equally calculating. Dubois describes Sara on page 84 as having "a good intellect without moral scruples and a clear idea of the communal and social value of virginity, respectability, and good clothes". Dubois is saying she is cunning, and in tune with what is expected in society. She knows what she needs to do to be successful, and like Sammy, she wants all of the power for herself. Sammy and Sara both lived a dog eat dog existence, and were willing to sacrifice others on their way to the top. It is important to note that Dubois recognized individualism as a major obstacle for racial progress, and Sammy and Sara demonstrated the issues stemming from individualism in Dark Princess. Unfortunately, others failed to capitalize on Dubois' foresight. Today there is an equal lack of cohesiveness amongst African Americans, due to varying socioeconomic levels. At the time of civil rights, a black middle class was able to forge ahead and have success. This professional level is still here today, but what also exists today is the bottom of ... • 30. Success In George Gladwell's Individualistic Means Of Success Success has long been viewed as a result of an individual's determination and in some cases, innate talent. Said individual would generally be of a less fortunate background and rise to triumph with seemingly no assistance from others. Conversely, Gladwell argues against this individualistic approach to analyzing success. He instead argues that "It is only by asking where they [successful people] are from that we can unravel the logic behind who succeeds and who doesn't." Gladwell looks deeper into the environment from which the successful spring and, using logic, thoroughly explains every aspect that lead to their success. Texting has revolutionized the way humans communicate in more ways than merely increasing the speed at which they transmit information. For Instance, Common texting abbreviations such as "lol" or "rotfl" have become ingrained into the culture of many first world countries and are now used in everyday conversation. The biologist looks at things such as the surrounding organisms and how much of a threat they are to an organism's survival, the accessibility of resources to the organism. In short, the biologist looks at the organism's environment and sees what advantages it has had that allowed it to survive, and in some cases, thrive. This is similar to the way in which Malcolm Gladwell describes "Accumulative Advantage". When Gladwell analyzes a successful person's rise to triumph, he takes into account the person's environment. He looks at things such as birth date, social attitude, economic trends, and genealogy to try to piece together what opportunities could have been an advantage and what advantages could have accumulated (hence the term Accumulative Advantage) in a person's life to propel them to their current successful status. • 32. China 's Economic Success Of The United States In 2014, what had been predicted numerous times throughout the past decade had finally occurred. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), China had overtook the United States (US) to become the world's largest economy, with their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measured by way of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), where GDP is adjusted to accommodate the relative prices in each market, was estimated to be at $17.6 trillion compared to $17.4 trillion for the US (Fray 2014). This stood testament to the success of the economic reforms in the wake of the death of Chairman Mao Zedong, led by Deng Xiao Ping beginning in 1978, in revitalising the Chinese economy to the superpower status that it enjoys today (Zhu, Webber & Benson 2010, p. 9). However this measure of China's economic success is but one side of the coin. According to China's official poverty standard, poverty fell from 65% to 10% in 1981 to 2004 (World Bank 2009, pp. iii–v) and while this marked reduction is exceptional, the way these statistics are obtained reveals part of the problem. The Chinese government's official poverty line is one of the lowest in the world and if poverty were to be measured by international standards, in 2005, China would have 254 million people under the US $1.25 poverty line set by the World Bank, the second largest number of poor in the world apart from India, compared to 15 million under official standards. This shows that while China's tremendous economic growth is undeniable, its ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Ralph Waldo Emerson's Definition Of Success S for Success "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded (____)". This quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson captures his paradigm of success. People strive to achieve success and create goals to obtain it; however, a single–minded interpretation of success leads to missing out on opportunities. The presence of challenges provides the opportunity for success and success comes with the determination to overcome the challenges. Early in the fifteenth century, the word "success" first appeared. Developing from Latin word "successus", it was first defined as "the fortune (good or bad) befalling anyone in a particular situation". In the mid 1600's, the definition of success– "a prosperous achievement of something attempted"– was altered and fits the current use of the word. Appearing in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1978, the latest entry of the definition of success is defined as "an instance of an achievement" ("Success"). • 44. Sustainable Economic Growth And The Success Of A Country Abstract Last few decades we have seen a changing notion of what constitutes a successful nation. According to the old school approach, 'sustainable economic growth' is primarily seen as the best way to make a "successful country". There are a few questions that arise as to what factors contribute to the success of a country. Is sustainable economic growth the best way to get there? A country comprises of its citizens and the two most important components contributing to the success of a country are the health and happiness of its citizens. Wealth becomes an important aspect only in a manner where it encourages greater well–being of the citizens. Another aspect that we need to consider is that of sustainable well–being. The term means maintaining a balance between environment sustainability and well–being. Thus, countries must provide well–being within environmental limits. Economic growth as measured by gross domestic product doesn 't really tell us much about citizens ' general well–being. Here we will be discussing about the change in approach towards what we consider a successful nation today. Many songs included lyrics that symbolized wanting freedom to a place that was not suffering. Within the lyrics they stated that "In that bright land there'll be no hunger, no orphan children crying for bread, no weeping widows toil or struggle, no shrouds, no coffins, and no dead". They would like to go to a place with no depression. Some would say hope played a big factor during this time period, but hope could not be upheld if the goal is not reached. This New Deal never ended the economic drought that the U.S was stuck in. Many programs such as the Agriculture Adjustment Administration grew taxes and led to more starvation. Despite the fact that Signet Jewelers is a very prominent seller in America, boasting several thousand stores both within and without malls across the country, its center is located in Hamilton, Bermuda, putting it in British territory. From there operates one of the most successful jewelry companies in recent history. Signet Jewelers claims its origins as a single jewelry store in Surrey, England, first opened in 1949 by Leslie Ratner. From this small beginning point, the company slowly acquired a host of other successful jewelry chains, making it increasingly powerful and prominent. At first, all these chains were in England, but eventually, it branched out to America as well, the country would eventually prove to be its most successful market, and likely saved the company when, in the early 1990s, the company seemed to hit a dead end. In science there have been many great success stories, where scientists have achieved their success through failure. "Thomas Edison was one of the most productive inventors in American history. But social or economic conditions were not an excuse," (Ford, 2003). He worked very hard, despite his economic status to become the success that he was and still is today. His work ethic and mindset are what pushed him to keep going, even when things were not going his way. He stated, "You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars," (Ford, 2003). I really like this metaphor of success, because it is completely true. If we are able to have enthusiasm towards what we are trying to accomplish, we will be more likely to reach it. It's not easy to learn something new after 30 years of service in a particular industry. I have grown up in a household that taught me if you want to be successful you have to work hard, you will not get anywhere with a hand out. You have to start at the bottom to get to the top. Adam Smith's views and opinions appeared to be exactly what I was taught. In the article, Growth Economics and Adam Smith believed freedom was crucial to economic success. Being able to own your own business and earn your profits without giving it all to the government is what keeps individuals successful, but that was the past. Now we are largely taxed for our land, our businesses, the profits we make, as well as our prosperity. Adam Smith also expressed the belief that those who receive an incentive will work hard. Because of these macroeconomic values, Australia is ranked third in the ranking of regional economies (Heritage.org). The reasons for Australia's ongoing success is mainly because of the boom in foreign demand of importing the plethora of natural resources and minerals the country contains, combined with the structural economic policies enacted in the 1980's (The Economist – Australia's Economy). One of the leading wool industries, the Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has said "it is easier to sell fine wool for clothes to China than to traditional recession–hit markets in Europe" (The Economist – Hitched to the China Wagon). Existing as an opportunity, in order to achieve an important goal and live a successful life, the American dream acts as a guideline for our own choices and pathway of life that we choose to follow. Yet, all people still have a personal definition of what success means to them. Success can be perceived to mean achievements in a career, fame in society, quality in work, essentially anything that showcases a sense of accomplishment and importance, no matter its different meaning to other people. These differences are what often separate individuals in their pursuit of the American dream while affecting the people, friends and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both Willy Loman and Troy Maxson have their own belief of what defines the American dream, but whenever they attempt to instill the same beliefs in their sons, they introduce and repeatedly worsen the problems of the already strained relationships between family members. The parents mean well and are attempting to positively impact the lives of their sons, yet each's idea produces similar conflicts of each relationship that instead elicit more challenges in shaping the lives of their children to their own liking. From the beginning pages of Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, the reader is easily able to understand the personal view from a salesman, Willy Loman, that the most important methods of achieving American dream lie in one's successes in the economic life and social life. In the opening discussion that Willy had with his wife, Linda, he talks about his son, Biff, and how Willy does not believe that Biff was trying to achieve the American dream. Despite The Tremendous Economic Success In Texas And Its Despite the tremendous economic success in Texas and its overall well–being, the state continues to face its nonstandard set of challenges that must be addressed immediately. Certainly, the most pressing issue is a deteriorating transportation infrastructure, which requires innovation, long–range planning and, of course, investment (Button & Reggiani, 2011). The following study focuses on the deteriorating transportation infrastructure as a major issue facing the state of Texas. The report will also discuss the positions of two major Texas political parties (Republican and Democratic) on the issue. It further explains the ways of their addressing it. Next, it will discuss the overall goals, the position, the level of lobbying and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the changing characteristics and the growth of the Texas population are the major causes of the transportation problem (Gravel, 2016). While it was not a major issue in the just concluded campaigns, the future of Texas ' infrastructure did receive attention in the two major Texas political parties (Republican and Democratic). However, the political parties reveal differing positions and philosophies on ways of tackling the issue. To be specific, the Democrats believe that infrastructure is important to the future economic prosperity (LePatner, 2010). Further, the party argues that broadband networks, schools, water systems, and energy are some of the infrastructures that are readily ripe for investment. As such, the party hopes that investments in such fields may help address other related issues such as unemployment too. Sadly, the Democratic Party does not mention how additional funding would be injected in infrastructure. Instead, the members weigh in on some tools that may be vital in helping Texas to fund infrastructure projects (Schiller, Bruun, & Kenworthy, 2010). The party promises to continue encouraging investments in infrastructure by state and local governments by creating a lasting edition of the Build America Bonds program. Conversely, the Republicans appear unfavorably on using government funds for sidewalks, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Summary Of Ain 'T No Makin' It By Jay Macleod The achievement ideology is the belief encompassed by many people in the United States that suggest if you work hard, you will climb the ladder of social and economic success. In the novel Ain't No Makin' It, Jay MacLeod discusses some contrasting views of this ideology between two groups of lower class Americans living in the same public housing project. One group, the Brothers, are mostly African American, while the other group, the Hallway Hangers, are mostly Caucasian. The Brothers grow up in homes with parents who strictly enforce the power of education and have slightly stable jobs, while the Hallway Hangers grow up in homes where their parents are often not present and do not value the power of education. These beliefs translate through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ultimately, the two groups end up with jobs that are not too different from one another, exemplifying the faults in the achievement ideology. Throughout their whole lives, the Brothers' consistently feel that their limited success is a reflection of their own shortcomings and has nothing to do with the flawed class or racial systems. They recognize the systems put in place to help lower class people of color excel, including free public education and affirmative action, but do not realize that this is not enough to overcome their limited cultural capital and unstable economic foundations. This also contributes to the Brothers' intersectionality, or their analysis of how factors such as race, gender, and class interact to shape their life chances. The intersectionality of the Hallway Hangers, on the other hand, is restricted to the core idea that no matter what they do, they can ever escape the social binds of the lower class. This intersectionality also falls into place with the idea of habitus, studied by Pierre Bourdieu. Habitus describes how one sees themselves and where they fit in life. The Hallway Hangers permanently see themselves in the lower class, while the Brothers aim for higher aspirations. While the Brothers' exhibit a higher quality of life and ultimately have less regrets and legal repercussions, they end with careers that are not much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Definition Essay About Success Success Success to most is the highest point of your life in which you can't keep advancing. To me however, success is an accomplishment in ones love life, economic stability to support yourself and your loved ones to live an extremely comfortable living, knowledge, and a healthy lifestyle. Success is surprisingly somewhat similar to motivation, both start from one small idea, or dream which we want to become reality like. Walking into school freshman year with the drive to graduate, then leaving the stage your senior year with a high school diploma in your hand. However motivation and success also have their differences as well, where motivation gives you a drive to do something. Success is the result of the actions you take throughout your ... That's why most successful people are not seen around that much because of the place in which they place themselves socially and economically for example, In the TV show "The Office" As the Scranton Branch and Stamford branch merge Jim Halpert (played by John Burke Krasinski) immediately gets to take the co– managerial position because not only was he Dunder Mifflin's paper company but he had increased the paper company's profit. To me this is very successful because not only did Jim have a good job but he is with the love of his life and in which they soon buy a house together with his raise. Historical examples also come into thoughts with the word success. One of the most successful people but the most hated comes into Mind . Adolph Hitler, Hitler despite his actions and damages he caused during World War 2 Hitler's rise to power was very successful. • 76. The Economics Of Happiness Is An Indicator Of Economic... For centuries, economists have deliberated on the most effective ways to promote growth, to increase employment, to boost consumption and to eliminate poverty, but where does this all lead? Surely these are all means to an end? Today, some economists may define the end as happiness. This essay will explore the potential benefits and drawbacks of using happiness as an indicator of economic success, analyze how it can be measured and examine the current theories on whether happiness can cause economic growth, or vice versa. Whilst economic growth first and foremost implies an increase in GDP per capita, increasing happiness can be attributed to many different determinants such as health, education, stability and inequality. Therefore, the economics of happiness is a multi–layered and rather subjective area that divides economists when asked whether happiness can cause economic growth. To begin with, Stevenson and Wolfers (2008) propose that as countries grow richer, their citizens report higher levels of satisfaction. This is achieved not only through higher income per capita levels, but through the expected byproducts of an improving economy such as increases in levels of education, access to healthcare, opportunities for employment and equality. Non–income determinants can be weighted against GDP levels to assess whether economic growth does impact happiness. For example, using the Corruptions Perceptions Index it was found that Sub–Saharan Africa, one of the poorest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
