The following slides are on my graphic layouts.
This shows 2 DPS and 2 Front Cover layouts for
each magazine, both AMP and ENDURE. They
are a representation of how the magazine will
look. They include features such as the main
image, headline, masthead, interview, quote
from interview, magazine credits, strapline,

13. Interview Of Inspiration
This is my interview
of inspiration. I like it
because it is clearly
laid out and the
colour scheme of red
and black works really
well. The big picture
on the right hand side
is really good and I
like the title because
it is very big, bold and
easily readable.
14. Draft Interview
Hi Declan, how have you been since the last time we met?
Yeah I’ve been busy but pretty good thanks. Got the album coming out in a couple weeks which I’m really exited for, yeah life is going really well thanks. How are you?
Good thanks. I hear there is a new album coming out, is that true?
Yes of course, it is true. I'm so exited. Its coming out in a few weeks on the 21st. Will you be listening?
Of course I will. What can we expect from the new album?
In the new album people can expect more of the same music but more upbeat. Why? Well I just think that’s the way music is going these days. People like faster, dance kind of music.
Which is your favorite song on the new album?
Oh that’s a hard question, if I'm honest with you I don’t know because I think they are all very good and have a chance of being number one singles.
Is there any possibility in the future for joining with another artist to make bigger songs?
Yeah well, there has been many rumors about Jay-Z, Eminem and Beyoncé but I'm not giving anything away. All will be revealed in the upcoming months.
Are their any festival performances next summer we can look forward to?
I believe so. I wont say which ones as we are still waiting for them to confirm us. However it is pretty safe to say there will be one or two.
Whilst working on the new album have you been keeping up with Tottenham Hotspur FC?
Do I exactly want to keep up with them? Haha. Haha well, yeah. In all seriousness, yes I have but they haven't been performing to their best potential lately. I guess we’ll see how the season goes
on though think they will push through to get champions league.
What is next for you that we have to look forward to?
Well, there's of course the new album but most importantly, I'm really looking forward to my world tour next year.
When do you think you will settle down and stop making music?
Never, I cant ever do that. Music is my life. When you have had one dream your whole life, you should aim to fulfill that as much as you can for the rest of it.
How long have you been into music for?
I have always been into music since I was very young. Had all the latest sing star and was playing all the singing games. I had so many friiends that would get annoyed with me for singing every
where we went. I sang in the shower, saying while playing football and I was always that kid that sang better and louder than everyone else when we had singing practice.
Did you do many school concerts or karaoke when you were young?
Of course I did loads. At first I had a confidence problem in front of hundreds of people. However after I did a small solo and the crowd was cheering you know, I realized I love it and people
called me a natural performer even at the age of 12. There was about 2000 people at a consert I sang in when I was 14 which was nerve wrecking. Then when I was 18 I played the drums for a
band who were performing to 25,000 people which was easily the best night of my childhood.
How was it, performing on stage with Madonna at the 02 Arena last year?
Incredible. There are no other words to describe. She is such a born natural performer. Shes amazing, she has such a varied ocal range and without a doubt I aspire to be like her.
Okay well thank you for coming in. I look forward to the album and I hope to see you soon.
It’s a pleasure, thank you for inviting me. See you again.
15. Test Photography
These images of Declan were taken in a
hallway at school. I took more than one
photo so I could find one which stood out
from the rest and one that looked the
best.
16. Final Hand Drawn Draft
I like my hand drawn front cover because it has a big image and a clear strapline at the top. I
think this is good as it gives the magazine an identity. For example if the strapline and masthead
is the same every time, the magazine becomes more consistent.
I like my hand drawn double page spread
because it has a big image which will draw allot
of attention to the reader. Additionally it has a
quote from interview which I think can work very
effectively a it it is usually the first thing people
read and so it can draw the reader in if they find
it interesting.

I chose this Double Page Spread (DPS)
because I like the layout and I think it is
important to have a big image as this is what
draws the readers attention the most.
Additionally, I like how there is a big area for
the title and also for the actual interview.
I also like my front cover as it is well laid
out and there is competition and events at
the top. This means there is more contents
to put on the page which generally makes
it look more professional.
18. Step by Step guide – Front Cover
1. Create a canvas on Photoshop and save it ‘AMP- Front Cover’.
2. Secondly, I added a big box using the tool to drag it from the top left hand
corner to the bottom right. I then coloured it a light blue.
3. Next I added in ruler lines at the edges of the magazine. This was so
everything stays in line and you can create texts and conventions around it.
Additionally, I added one for the bar code.
4. To create this image of a barcode I found a picture of the traditional black
and white code on the internet. I then had to add ruler lines for the date,
social media icons and website. Ctrl+t is too add text which can be resized
and you can change the font.
5. Next you can add your main image in. to do this you can drag it across from
your files straight into the Photoshop window. Edit things like coloring and
lighting to make the image stand out. For example, I used the dodging tool
to brighten up the face.
6. Once this is done you can add more text using Ctrl+t and you can write the
name of the artist and any other texts around the image. To change colour
click on the little icon in the bottom left hand corner. Then choose from all
the colours it shows you as shown on the left.
7. Don’t forget to add your masthead as this is one of the most important
aspects of the magazine. This must go in the top right hand corner.
8. Finally, make sure your magazine looks professional and well presented.
This includes, making all the fonts work well together, every convention is
straight, the colours work well together and mainly it is in high quality
(pixelated images looks unprofessional).
19. Step By Step Guide - DPS
1. First of all you need to open up InDesign and save a double page template
as an IDML.
2. Then you need to create the columns for the text to go in on the right
hand side of the page. Next you need to insert the text into it. Change the
colours, size and font style of the text so it suits your magazine and looks
professional.
3. Next you need to create a pull quote and stand first. A pull quote is an
enlarge piece of writing in the middle of a block of text to make it stand
out (this is shown on the right). To do this you need to click on paragraph
on the right hand side of the page
4. A drop capital is an enlarge capital letter at the beginning of the text. This
is shown in the image on the right. It is there too allow the reader to know
where to start reading.
5. Next you need press ctrl+t to add a text box and create a title on the the
left hand page. Make sure you include a bold font, colour and size that will
stand out.
6. Next add the image and send it to back. This is for the page on the left and
should be a shot of the same artist on the front of the magazine.
7. Add a background to the other side too, this could be a colour ir a gradient
to match the rest of the magazine. I did this by creating a large box and
sending it to the back. Alternatively, you could create something on
photoshop.
8. Finally, add magazine credits, website, date and page by pressing ctrl+t
and creating little text boxes at the bottom of the page. This must be in an
appropriate font, a small size and a colour that suits your magazine.

business you need to budget and know how much you are spending on staff and salaries so
you can workout potential profits. Additionally, you can later on use the information to work
our profit using the calculation (revenue – cost).
26. Printing Quotes and Costs
It would cost about £9,700 to print my magazine and I
will print 15,000 in total.
http://print24.com/uk/product/magazines/
27. Retail Outlets
You can buy most
magazines in many shops
and stores. For example
some stores that sell them
is WHSmith, Sainsbury's,
The Co-operative, Tesco
and smaller corner shops.
28. Advertising Revenue
I am going to charge £3,025 for a full page advert and £1,512 for a half page advert.
For 10 full page advertisements in the magazine, the cost would come too £30,250.
http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/uploads/Kerrang!-MediaPack-2011.pdf
29. How else are you going to market your magazine?
Using social media is a very easy and efficient way for promoting things. This is
because millions of users use Facebook every day therefore the target
audience is very large. Additionally it is free to use and very simple to set up.
Below, is a facebook page I set up for AMP Magazine where I can post photos,
videos, news and events about my magazine.
30. Profit And Loss Breakdown
To calculate profit you need to use the following calculation.
(Total Revenue- Total Cost) = Profit
Total Revenue= £67,600
Advertising – £30,250
Magazine Sales – £37,350
Total Cost= £210,649.36
Printing - £9712.19
Equipment – £55,473.17
Salaries - £145,500
Therefore, £210,649.36 - £67,600 = - £143,049.36
I am selling my magazine for £2.49.
31. Role of Relevant Regulatory
Bodies
The Editors’ Code of Practice sets out the rules that
newspapers and magazines regulated by IPSO have
agreed to follow. The Code is written and
administered by the editors code committee and
enforced by IPSO. The Editors' Code of Practice
Committee writes, reviews and revises the Code of
Practice to keep it fresh, responsive and relevant.
The latest version of the Editors’ Code of Practice
came into effect on 1 January 2016.
Source: https://www.ipso.co.uk/IPSO/cop.html
32. Ethical & Legal Issues
The Editors’ Code of Practice sets out the many rules that newspapers and magazines regulated by IPSO have
agreed to follow. To the left are three examples of the rules; Accuracy, Discrimination and Confidential Sources.
This relates to my magazine as AMP magazine must follow these rules before publishing a magazine. For example,
number 12, Discrimination. Q magazine must double check the whole magazine including images and texts to
ensure there is no prejudice against ‘race, colour, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation or any physical or
mental illness or disability.
33. Copyright
Copyright is when there is a legal right which lasts
for a certain amount of years so you can’t print,
publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic or
musical material that already exists.
There is no copyright symbol on the front page of
the hard copy of the magazine itself. However this
does not mean there is no copyright within the
magazine. Throughout the content of the magazine
there are copyright laws and even copyright within
advertisements.
Since the copyright law changed in 1998, the
employees gave their own rights for photocopying
from a paper version and reproduction in a book.
For example this could be a writer or a
photographer. Then the employer(s) have rights for
everything else.
Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and
symbols, names and images used in commerce. There is evidence of other intellectual property (IP) being used in
the magazine. Above is the types of protection and what examples of intellectual property are associated with
them.
Source: http://www.wipo.int/about-ip/en/
34. Royalties
Royalties is when a magazine has included content which is copyrighted and if
someone else includes this information then they have to pay the original magazine.
Copyright Infringement
The use or production of copyright protected material without the permission of the
copyright holder. Copyright infringement means that the rights given to the copyright
holder, such as the exclusive use of a work for a set period of time, are being breached
by a third party. Music and movies are two of the most week-known forms of
entertainment that suffer from significant amounts of copyright infringement.
For example, if my magazine were to post a music playlist online. You would not be
allowed to copy it and play it else where for your own beneficial, advertising purposes.
However, if you were to break the law and do so, a penalty would be put in place
depending on how serious the crime is.
Source: http://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/copyright-infringement.asp
35. Regulatory Issues
IP/Watermark
Things that tend to have copyright can be also known as Intellectual
Property (IP) and this is protected by the law. IP can be divided into two
categories which are; Industrial Property and Copyright. As well as IP on
printed work for example on an image on google that has been printed, you
can get a digital watermark which protects any copyrighted content from
any magazine online and in any digital format. It is very significant to have
this because it means people will have to pay you to use your ideas and
information.
For example, particularly on my magazine, if you find an online copy of the
content then you cannot use it if it has a watermark on it. Additionally, you
have to contact me and either ask for permission or pay for it. This is good
for me as it is another source of income.
An IP/Watermark is demonstrated to the image on the right .
36. Regulatory Issues
Data Protection Act (1998)
The Data Protection Act (DPA) is a law designed to protect personal data stored on
computers or in an organized paper filing system.
During the second half of the 20th century, businesses, organisations and the
government began using computers to store information about their customers,
clients and staff in databases. For example; names, addresses, contact information,
employment history, medical conditions, convictions and credit history.
The 1998 Data Protection Act was passed by Parliament to control the way
information is handled and to give legal rights to people who have information stored
about them.
Other European Union countries have passed similar laws as often information is held
in more than one country.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/ict/legal/0dataprotectionactrev1.shtml
37. Calendar Events
The release date of my Magazine is the 19th of
November. This is after 4 weeks of production and
on the very last day on a Saturday because this is
when most youngsters are free to go out. Since the
magazine is coming out on a Saturday it gives a lot
of young readership a chance to go out and buy it
on the first day of release.
Additionally, the magazine will be released in
November as it is only a month off christmas. This is
good as many parents will be thinking about buying
their children the magazine as a Christmas present.
38. Photoshop Versions
I am going to distribute AMP as I think It
looks more professional. Additionally,
the colour scheme of blue, red and
black works very well together.
39. Form & Style
My magazine will have a red, white and blue colour scheme. This is because they
are bold colours and may stand out more. This attracts the readers and increasing
the chance of a purchase. This is good as it generates more profit for my company
allowing it to expand in the future.
My front cover will be set out the same in every edition. Every edition has the mask
head at the top and strapline at the top right corner. There is always a big image
and main story in the center of the magazine with additional stories up the left or
right hand side. By making the magazines similar allows customers to repeat
purchase easily and find the magazine they want.
The font styles will always be big, bold and colourful which is good as it grabs the
readers or passing, potential buyers attention. Therefore this increases the
circulation figures as more people are willing to buy them.
Some colour house style examples are black blue and red.
40. Target Audience
The target audience of both magazines would be teenagers up to 40. We will do this by featuring and
displaying current, yet popular artists. They even feature artists that are older or less well-known artists
to cater for an older target audience.
The Socio-Economic Needs is a B because the magazine is for middle class people who don’t earn that
much money but enough to afford this magazine every month.
Katz Uses & Gratification Theory would be to Inform and Educate, this is because the magazine tells us a
lot about upcoming artists, albums and songs. It also educates on what's new so we keep up with the
latest trends.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs would be Caregivers because you sympathies with the characters
situation. This could be because the artist on the front cover has had a rough time in the past and is
recovering.
Hartley's Subjectivities:
1. Age- 15-40
2. Gender- male
3. Class- Middle Class (B)
4. Ethnicity- UK/British
5. Nation- UK
41. Spending Power
Spending power is how much money a customer can pay on a
product or service.
My target audience would be in the category of B as this is
high up on the socio – economic needs table they will have a
higher spending power compared to C2 and E groups,
therefore I have priced my magazine at £2.49.
42. Magazine Market Place
As my magazine will be new on the market, it will have to
compete with the current, magazine companies. This means
that the magazine will need a USP (unique selling point) that
will attract a variety of readers.
One main way in which the magazine is going to be marketed
is through the the high quality and unique content that will be
displayed in every addition of my magazine. Also, this can be
supported in social media and competitions.
Alternatively, you could lower the price. Will attract more
customers as a price drop, pleases the customers needs and
wants. Then once the magazine has become popular, the price
of the magazine can be raised slightly.
43. Endure Proposal
The format of what I am going to create is a magazine. I am going to create a new
form of a front cover and double page spread (DPS) as part of a larger marketing
project for Endure.
My working title is Endure which means something is going to go on for a long time.
This is because the magazine will be very professional and will be able to keep up or
even dominate the market. The font style is very big and bold to show off the logo of
the magazine. Also it is going to be black grey and yellow so people know it's my
magazine. The title of my magazine will be placed on the top left hand corner of my
magazine on the front colour and the colours will be black, grey and yellow.
The genre is rap as this is one of he most popular genre. In the market, my magazine
will complete with NME and Q because they are also formed from this genre.
The name of sub genre entitled ‘Endure’ magazine will be full of pictures, news,
articles, albums gig reports and song lyrics. Mainly because this is what the public are
interested in. The magazine will also feature artists that are New up and coming who
may only have small record labels. This is to publicise them and music is always
changing and moving forward.
The colour red was chosen for Endure because it is a bold colour and it appeals to
both genders and all ages. The colour red connotes love and happiness which will have
a positive effect on my magazine when people see and read it.
44. AMP Proposal
The format of what I am going to create is a magazine. I am going to create a new form of a front cover
and double page spread (DPS) as part of a larger marketing project for AMP.
My working title is AMP which is short for amplify. This is because the magazine is loud and outgoing
just like the connotations of an amplifier. The font style is very big and bold to show off the logo of the
magazine and create a brand image. Also it is going to be blue and red so people know it's my magazine.
The title of my magazine will be placed on the top left hand corner of my magazine.
The genre is rap as this is the most listened to genre. In the market, my magazine will complete with
NME and Q because they are also formed from this genre.
The name of sub genre entitled 'AMP' magazine will be full of pictures, news, articles, albums gig
reports and song lyrics. Mainly because this is what the public are interested in. The magazine will also
feature artists that are New up and coming who may only have small record labels. This is to publicise
them and music is always changing and moving forward.
The denotation of the colour scheme for the magazine front cover will be red and blue.
The colour red was chosen for AMP because it is a bold colour and it appeals to both genders and all
ages. The colour red connotes love and happiness which will have a positive effect on my magazine
when people see and read it.
46. Front Cover Corrections - AMP
The feedback I gained front my front covers were ‘Your main image on both are small and positioned very low. Also, your writing
doesn’t show up well on both.’
Therefore, I changed the main
image and made it bigger. I also
moved the image down to fit
more of the artists head in the
photo.
I also noticed that the white
writing on the page was hard to
read. Therefore I made the
background slightly darker. This
made the writing easier to read
as it does not blend in as much
with the background.

different things such as proposals, photo-shoot
plan, front covers, regulatory issues, production
plan and interview of inspiration.
