Binge Drinking In Australia
Alcohol is the most commonly used drug in Australia (The Australian Drug Foundation, 2014). The
term binge drinking is defined as drinking heavily over a short period of time with the intention of
becoming intoxicated (Druginfo.adf.org.au, 2009). Binge drinking is spreading across Australia and
is now having a greater affect on adolescents. There are things that individuals, schools, families
and governments can do in order to minimise binge drinking. The effects that alcohol has on the
body depend on a range of thing such as how often you are drinking, the strength of the drink you
drink and how much you drink (Dame, 2016). Alcohol has both short–term and long–term effects on
the body. Some short–term effects include alcohol poisoning, blackouts, ... Show more content on

Most schools offer health as a subject but binge drinking is not emphasised enough and as students
get older the subject becomes optional which means student are likely not to take it but it is in the
older ages that the children are going out to parties and binge drinking. Binge drinking is having a
large effect on teenagers across Australia.
Teenagers binge drinking on the weekends is affecting their education as some are coming to school
with bad hangovers. "Students who used alcohol and other drugs came to school late, tired, and
often with a poor attitude, the principals said". Australian teacher said that it was harder to teach
those who had big weekends (ABC News, 2014).
The Northern Territory government could look at offering talks in order to educate parents hoping
that they go away and consider their child's behaviour. If the parents aren't educated then they may
not see a problem with what their child is doing. Once they are educated they can give their child
the opportunity to live a better lifestyle with minimal drinking in order to reduce the long term
effects it could have on their

Underage Drinking
The primary idea of this paper is, how alcohol effects high school students academically. To
calculate this measure of achievement, they measured the student's grade point average. Williams
Powell, and Wechsler studied the association between alcohol consumption, and GPA. Versus
DeSimone, and Wolaver's investigated the effect of underage drinking with high school students.
Throughout the latter study, a negative association was found among drinking and high school
students. Research on adolescent brain development stated that, the physical development of the
brain structure could be affected negativity by excessive consumption of alcohol. The national
Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health employed data from a couple of waves that contained ...

Cook, Moore, and Yamada concluded that excessive drinking can affect the completion of high
school and college. Wolaver concluded that binge drinking among males and females could risk
receiving a lower GPA. A negative correlation was said to be found among females in college,
versus a positive one on females who attended high school. With the use of standard regression
analysis, by DeSimone, and Wolaver, they were able to find that GPA was lower by 0.4 for binge
drinkers. The studies on GPA effected by drinking concluded that it had negative effect. First GPA
was concluded by self–reported, second a cross sectional data was used. Add Health was used to
study health – related "behavior of adolescent in grades 7 through 12"(Balsa). The study consisted
of interviews that were done at home, and were re interviewed a year later (Balsa). "The main
interest of this study was abstracted from GPA in school transcripts, which had a linkage to the
respondents at each wave" (Balsa). CAPI/CASI questions were used during this process. Although
results in males were negative, alcohol still had an effect on GPA. However, for females the
coefficient was smaller for binge–drinking and excessive drinking. Male's excessive alcohol use of
100 drinks per month was related with an increase of 4 % probability of difficulty in school. In
"females the coefficient was positive and larger than males and out of four, five were statistically
significant"

Preventing Underage Drinking
It's both dangerous and against the law, but young people between the ages of 12 and 20 are
responsible for 11 percent of the alcohol consumed annually in the United States. Underage drinking
also accounts for more than 4,300 deaths of young people in the U.S. each year. Here are some signs
that may indicate a teenager has been abusing alcohol. Major red flags include differences in sleep
patterns, appetite, and change of friends or physical appearance. When teens fall in with a social
circle that drinks heavily, they may display a change in attitude and hang out in places and with
people they did not associate with before. They may also lose interest in activities they used to
participate in. Underage drinking can lead to increased absences ... Show more content on

Parents in particular can have either a positive or negative influence. Parents can help their children
avoid alcohol problems by talking about the dangers of drinking, drinking responsibly, if they
choose to drink, serving as positive role models in general, not making alcohol available, getting to
know their children's friends, having regular conversations about life in general, connecting with
other parents about sending clear messages about the importance of not drinking alcohol,
supervising all parties to make sure there is no alcohol, encouraging kids to participate in healthy
and fun activities that do not involve alcohol. Research shows that children whose parents are
actively involved in their lives are less likely to drink alcohol. On the other hand, research shows
that a child with a parent who binge drinks is much more likely to binge drink than a child whose
parents do not binge

Underage Drinking And Teenage Drinking
Alex Wilmore Joshua James, Instructor ENG 111 07 July 2015 Underage Drinking "With such
compelling information, the question is why haven 't we been able to do more to prevent the crisis
of underage drinking? The answer is: rising the age to 25" is what Lucille Roybal–Allard once said,
a U.S. Representative for serving in Congress since 1993. This statement has brought many to
speculate of issues and debates. This expression opened the eyes of American people that often
struggled to make this truth into a reality. It might be easy to believe that age laws lowered the
deaths of the underage but there are still signs of its dreadful company in many pieces of American
life. Families who choose to educate their children about underage drinking and driving, seem to
have a higher chance of getting through with the child. These underage teens can face jail or death
when they give drinking a chance and even attempt to drive, having a sexual intercourse or just
plain out doing something out of the teen's element. There are few different methods of controlling
the underage drinking and most of which the teachers, the parents and everyone who is willing to be
involved. The underage drinking can be narrowed to two different opinions of effective methods of
eliminating underage drinking: the first opinion being to have parental and teacher prevention
methods and the second opinion being that regulating the alcohol assumption age to 25. The goal of
this research is to take a look at some

Drinking Age Drinking
There has been an ongoing discussion in the United States on whether the drinking age should be
lowered to eighteen like most of the world or if it should stay at twenty–one. Underage drinking has
been a major questionable issue for years, yet why is it not under control? Teenagers are continuing
to buy alcohol with fake identification cards, getting into bars and drinking illegally. As a recent
teen, I have proof that these things are going on not only in college but in high school as well. There
are a lot of factors that come together to why the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen. The
most obvious reason is too many people are drinking before they are twenty–one. Liquor stores,
bars, and clubs all want to make money and if they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, these states were later essentially bribed by Congress which used fiscal blackmail and
threatened to retract funding for highway construction – to pass the National Minimum Drinking
Age Act, which forced all states to change their legal drinking age to 21. In the Equal Protection
Clause of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, it is stated that no state shall "deprive any person
of life, liberty, or property." If the Constitution clearly declares that the States cannot discriminate in
any way that will deny a person his civil rights, why is the government allowing states to create
another second–class citizen in the millions of people aged 18 to 21 unable to drink like the rest of
the adults in the country? After all, the government is ready and willing to allow its citizens to die
fighting for their country, but suddenly, a beer puts these citizens too much at risk. Lowering the
legal drinking age to 18 would make alcohol less of a forbidden fruit, taking away the thrill that
many young people get from breaking the law, make alcohol less of a taboo for adult's newly
entering college and the workforce, and make alcohol consumption a more normalized activity done
in moderation. A drinking age of 21 only forces alcohol consumption behind closed doors. Always
unsupervised, done in secret and too often excessive, this style of drinking among minors has no
doubt been responsible for the alarming rise in rates of dangerous binge drinking at colleges. In

Drinking And Driving
Drinking and driving is not always a right thing. When people drink and drive the action of it could
get extremely dangerous. Wrecks are one of the main problems that can happen when some people
are drunk because some can lose control of what they are trying to do and end up wrecking. Another
problem is driving under the influence of being on drugs. This can cause serious damage. When
people are on drugs, they lose train of thought and half of the time, they forget what they are doing.
It does not end too well. People can become abusive because they usually do not exactly know what
they are doing. Usually, people do drugs to get their minds or to make them feel better when they
are emotional, but when others do so much, they lose control ... Show more content on

Unfortunately, some of the money was spent on high school driver education, which increased
teenage driving without reducing the number of crashes per driver, thus increasing deaths"
(Robertson 296).When driving while on any kind of drug can mess up your train in thought.
Although people tend to lose what they was thinking before and everything else, but most of all
some forget about the dangerous outcome that will happen when they are on them. Throughout the
year there has been a big change in the numbers going up on crashes. There are now programs that
can help them so they can get out of everything and all the drugs that you're on (Robertson 295).
They have made vast progress: based on random stops, the number of drivers with any alcohol in
their system was 35.9% in 1973. By 2007, the figure had fallen to 12.4%, according to the

drinking and driving and doing drugs and driving. There has been so many wrecks and people dying
over this case. Some people do not really understand how dangerous it can be and they still continue
to do it. It was becoming to the point police can not really get anyone to understand even with them
being taken into prison (Gray 54). "Three published studies have examined the effects of lowered

Episodic Drinking
Furthermore, many scholars argued that heavy drinking may be associated with negative mental and
physical health. Evidence demonstrates that exposure to alcohol can cause irreversible brain
damage. After reading various research, I determined that age is an important factor in the
development of alcohol tolerance, and I also reflected on the outcome it can have on the brain.
Marisa M Silveri, an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School carried out a
research on separate age groups, and came out with the following results:
Studies using animal models have also suggested that heavy episodic alcohol exposure during
adolescence is associated with significant deficits in memory retention, greater cumulative damage
than chronic exposure and long–term changes in cognition.Heavy episodic patterns of alcohol
consumption may make the brain more susceptible to damage, particularly at a time–emerging
adulthood–when heavy episodic drinking levels peak and the brain is undergoing the final stages of
maturational refinement (Silveri). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The AMA (American Medical Association) report done on liquor repercussions on the mind
indicates that adolescence is the period where our brain goes through the most important
transformations; hence, the intake of alcoholic drinks may result to: visual spatial, memory lacks
which may produce poor school performances, social problems, depressions, suicidal thoughts and
violence (USA Today Magazine). In fact, this explains that young people who have a tendency of
consuming alcohol at a tender age have a great risk of experimenting lapses in judgement and

The video on underage drinking further highlighted information that I was already aware of. Over
the last several years, I have seen multiple news stories covering the Midwest's drinking problem.
According to Bustle.com, Lincoln was found to be one of the top ten drunkest cities in America.
This doesn't come as much of a shock to me. Drinking is part of Nebraska's culture. Small Nebraska
towns are full of drinkers; even minors are allowed to participate. Even though I am from a small
town, I didn't drink until I was in college, and even then I did so in a responsible manner. My family
and friends never encouraged or participated in drinking, so I never really felt the need to. However,
the same can't be said for many of my high school peers.

Drinking under the influence (DUI) or in other words driving while intoxicated (DWI) is a crime of
driving a transport while affected by alcohol or any other drugs, to a level that reduces the driver's
mind preventing him to function a motor vehicle safely. Driving is an integral part of our daily
routines however, the dangers that accompany driving the transport are often ignored. From the
Monash University Accident Research Centre, a study found that 13.5% of the crashes were because

Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)( n.d.), binge drinking is defined as "A pattern of drinking
that results in harm to one's health, interpersonal relationships, or ability to work". Further research
into this issue has found that more than 1,000 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die

Binge Drinking And The Minimum Legal Drinking Age

Binge Drinking and the Minimum Legal Drinking Age
In the year 1984, President Ronald Reagan enacted a law that increased the minimum drinking Age
all U.S states to 21 years. As a result, it is believed that the mortality rates due to road accidents
reduced from 5,000 in the 80's to 2, 000 in 2005 (Dean–Mooney). However, the issue of binge
drinking remains unsolved with learning institutions having to deal with it every semester. In
response to this, 134 college presidents formed the Amethyst Initiative, which is, a proposal
allowing persons aged between 18 and 20 to consume alcoholic drinks Conversely, the Mothers
against Drunk Driving (MADD), which pushed for the enactment of the law in 1984 believes that
the Amethyst Initiative is misplaced. The push for a lower drinking age is a battle between the
parental community and the student fraternity. For the drinking age too be lowered the Amethyst
Initiative must compile concrete research and facts to support its findings. Nonetheless, historical
data shows that increase in the minimum legal drinking age results in a decrease in the amount of
deaths. As argued by Barry, Stellefson and Woosley, "the MLDA clearly reduces alcohol
consumption and its associated harms" (8). In light of this, one can argue that the minimum drinking
age should remain at 21 as lowering it may cause fatal consequences.
The factors can be broadly classified as internal, such as

Teen Drinking Essay
The average American begins drinking at 15 years old, despite the fact that the legal drinking age in
the United States is 21 years old. Underage alcohol use is more likely to kill young people than all
illicit drugs combined. I believe that raising the drinking age to 25 years old can save many young
lives.
Affects of Adolescent Drinking Adolescent drinking affects a child's mind, body and future.
Adolescence is the between childhood and adulthood. During this time alcohol use may interrupt
brain development. Hippocampus, the part of the brain important forfvb fg learning and memory has
been proven to be smaller in people that have started drinking in a young age. In a recent study
where short–term memory skills in alcohol ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"The condition, delirium tremens, known primarily to heavy drinkers, causes hallucinations along
with loss of control of muscular functioning." When this condition develops and the alcoholic slows
their drinking, withdrawal syndrome can and usually does. This may include agitation, tremors,
seizures, and hallucinations.
Social Consequences Car crashes are the leading cause of death among youth ages 15 to 20 years
old. Adolescents already are at a high risk being inexperienced drivers. Drivers younger that 21 are
more likely to have alcohol–induced impairment of driving skills than older drivers. The rate of fatal
crashes among alcohol involved drivers between 16–23 is more than twice the rate for alcohol
involved drivers 24 and older. Sexual assault, including rape, occurs mostly with women in late in
late teens and early twenties, usually with a date. In a survey, approximately 10 percent of female
high school students reported having been raped. Research suggests that alcohol use by the offender,
the victim, or both, increases the likelihood of sexual assault by a male.
Adolescent alcohol use with high–risk sex (having multiple sexual partners and not using any
condoms) produces serious outcome. The consequences of high–risk sex also are common in this
age group, particularly unwanted pregnancy and

Binge Drinking In College
The perennial problem of binge drinking, especially among college students, is an important issue
that must be solved as soon as possible. Thesis: The binge–drinking–related problems in campus can
be inherently solved by building up proper drinking belief from family education. Supporting
subtopics: The gravity of binge–drinking–related problems has not been relieved in the recent
decade, although college administrators have developed prevention programs and punishment
policies to eliminate the phenomenon of binge drinking. The persistently unsolved problem should
be attributed to that the major focus of previous attempts has generally been on "preventing binge–
drinking behavior per se" (root). To solve binge–drinking related problems by prohibiting binge
drinking is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a matter of fact, binge drinking would not necessarily lead to negative consequences. For
example, "consider the individual who perceives that drinking alcohol is likely to lead to physical
harm. This individual is perhaps less likely to engage in behaviors after drinking that are highly
related to experiencing negative consequences relative to individuals who do not hold that belief"
(root). Binge drinking in campus is universally recognized as misconduct, but the degree of its
consequence is determined by the drinking belief of the drinkers. In certain occasions, such as
birthday parties, binge drinking is inevitable. But if the college students hold the drinking belief that
any immoral, illegal or dangerous activities should be avoided after binge drinking with their
friends, in all probability, they would not suffer from the potential negative consequences.
Additionally, when there exist a few fellows with proper alcohol awareness among the drinkers in a
party, they can help lower the risk of alcohol–related hazards of their friends in the party

In today's society, drinking alcohol has become the cultural norm. Since 1788, binge drinking has
been a cultural problem in Australia, since then alcohol has being a fundamental aspect of
Australian's life (Scott, 2015). It is defined as the heavily consumption of alcohol, during short
period of time with the intention of becoming intoxicated (Australia Drug Foundation, 2016).
Despite, the improvement of Australian's attitude towards alcohol, there still remains a significant
pressure not just to drink but to drink excessively (Scott, 2015). In Australia more than $7 billon of

Drinking Age Drinking Essay
In the United States, the legal age of adulthood is eighteen. When a person reaches this age, they are
capable to vote, buy tobacco products, get married without their parents' consent, enlist in the
military, along with many more privileges. One privilege that is not included is the ability to buy
and legally consume alcoholic beverages. The legal age for drinking in the U.S. is twenty–one. If
they are considered "adults" when they turn eighteen, why do they have to wait three more years to
legally drink? This very question is pondered daily by many Americans. If they are mature enough
to make the decisions that come with the privileges they gain at the age of eighteen, they should also
be able to buy and consume alcohol legally. According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, excessive drinking in underage youth is responsible for more than 4,300 deaths each
year. Lowering the drinking age to eighteen could help decrease the number of fatalities. Around
11% of all alcohol that is consumed in the United States, is consumed by underage drinkers ranging
in age from twelve to twenty. ("Underage Drinking" np) The average youth drinks more alcohol at
an occasion than adults do. Lowering the legal age to drink could help decrease these problems. The

motives; (1) Enhancement motives involve drinking to increase positive affect states or positive
moods, such as sensation seeking and pleasurable moments (Ham & Hope, 2003). Alcohol is widely
used to fulfil needs for novelty and stimulation to create the thrills or sensation over the social
situations. Reports suggested that individuals who are internally generated are more consistent
across a drinking situation in how they drink than those of with external motives, resulting in higher
levels of alcohol consumption (Ham & Hope, 2003; Loxton, Bunker, Dingle, & Wong,

alcohol poisoning. "Alcohol can enter the blood stream; binge drinkers can ingest a fatal dose of
alcohol before passing out." ("Binge Drinking Can Be Fatal"). The legal minimum age should not

First of all, alcohol is a depressant, in other words it controls how slow your body functions. It could
alter with a person's movement, emotions, and vision. Alcohol impedes messages that your brain is
trying to receive. You are more relaxed depending on how much you drink. The more you drink the
more intoxicated you are and the more sick feeling you could get. Depending on the person, you
could either be an angry, friendly or maybe a sad drunk, making you act not yourself. When you
drink, you react to things slower, that's why people should not drive intoxicated. Consuming too
much alcohol in a short period of time can have a result of alcohol poisoning; the first symptom is
usually vomiting. Resulting more symptoms such as extreme fatigue, difficulty breathing, low blood
sugar, unconsciousness, or even death. Furthermore, there are aftereffects, known as a hangover, in
other terms, it's what happens after heavy drinking. An alcohol withdrawal can usually happen after
just four or five drinks to get a hangover, which typically happens several hours after your last
drink. These symptoms include headaches, nausea, fatigue, muscle pain, or mild anxiety. "When
teenagers do use alcohol they may not just be affecting their brain for that night or weekend, but for
the next 80 years of their life." ("Henry Wechsler, PhD and Bernice Wuethrich").

Bine Drinking Vs Binge Drinking
America perfectly represents the ideals of the Enlightenment: the land of the free and the home of
the brave; a nation in which citizens can choose who they want to be and what they want to do.
Throughout the Revolutionary War, the colonists relied on each other for support and no one could
afford the luxury of a peaceful, secluded life. That emphasis on sociability became a part of the
American identity. Lung cancer has declined steadily over the last thirty years (Cancer Statistics
Report), but liver cancer incidents have tripled over that time period as Americans are binge
drinking now more than ever (Key Statistics About Liver Cancer). While, at times, smoking can be
social and drinking can be anti–social, America's emphasis on gregariousness causes society to
hypocritically scorn smoking but tolerate binge drinking because smoking is an anti–social activity
whereas binge drinking is a social activity. Advertisement posters against smoking and binge
drinking differ because of the USA's cultural values, particularly due to the solidarity of smoking
versus the camaraderie of drinking. Although binge drinking is typically considered four drinks for
women and five drinks for men in a two–hour span, this fails to account for someone's height,
weight, and food consumed, and therefore many people have no idea if they are binge drinking or
not, causing some to black out (Drinking Levels Defined). A photo of a passed out teenage girl with

Drinking on College Campuses
Drinking on College Campuses Underage students drinking on college campuses has been a
problem for countless years. Parents and professors look over the problem of students drinking and
look at their college life in a positive way. They understand the students to be studying, making new
friends, or working. Instead, an abundance of students are partying and drinking at these parties. The
transformation from high school to college causes stress to the students. Therefore, instead of the
students looking towards studying more, they start partying to solve their problems. Once they start
partying, it gets harder for them to stop and they become depressed. Students drinking at college has
become a provision for them, thinking it would help with their stress and problems rather than
causing other predicaments.
Parents would like to think that their children are doing what they're expected to do while at college
rather than drinking and partying. According to Lucy E. Napper who wrote "What Are Other Parents
Saying? Perceived Parental Communication Norms and the Relationship Between Alcohol–Specific
Parental Communication and College Student Drinking," states parents perceive their children to be
studying and making new friends. The parents presume their children to be cramming in plenty of

The Problem With College Drinking

consequences that occur from excessive drinking. Alcohol abuse takes an enormous toll on the
intellectual and social lives of male students on campuses across the country. Almost sixty percent

if clubs and bars cracked down on underage drinking the problem would not be as serious. Youth

better tools to prevent underage drinking this problem would decrease rapidly. In conclusion,
underage drinking affects should be taught at a younger age before the kids are exposed. Not only

children go into the teenage years. Alcohol is becoming a massive concern for many parents as their
kids are starting to try it out and many factors play into this. Each year approximately 5,000 young
people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking. Adolescents drinking is put out to be
exaggerated in some cases, but looking at that the statistics it is clear to see that the Medias
portrayal of adolescents drinking is accurate.
Adolescents drinking is not viewed over in the media, only a very few percentage of reported
incidents of adolescents drinking have been on the news, and the ones that go on are only the major
incidents that happen. This gives viewers the feeling that teenage drinking is rare and it isn't a vast
problem, while it actually is. 40% of alcohol related fatal car crashes involves teens and 60% of all
teen deaths in car crashes are alcohol related. Everyday an average of 11,318 teenagers try alcohol

statistics are mostly ignored or over looked upon as most people think there fake, not seeing the big

Underage Drinking Essay
Imagine killing your best friend. Imagine smashing him into a telephone
pole, crushing his bones and organs and making him bleed to death. Imagine
the pain and suffering he would go through. Imagine then going on trial for
his death, facing his family and friends and the hateful stares as you walk
in the courtroom. Imagine a verdict of guilty and being sentenced to thirty
years in prison, thirty long years to sit alone and ponder how you could have
been so stupid to kill someone you love.
How would a night like this have begun? It probably began like the night
of a typical American teenager. You would go pick up a carload of your
closest friends and head to the party scene. You have a few drinks, maybe a
beer or two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now imagine your freshman year of high school. You get invited to that
huge senior party, so of course you go. There are a million different types
of drinks there and you are offered a beer by some upperclassmen. You take
it and chug it, trying to impress them. They offer you another and another,
until finally you pass out. You are put, unconscious in a chair and the
party goes on. The next morning someone tries to wake you, but you won't
open your eyes. They call 911 and you are taken to the hospital. You are
rushed into the ER and 10 minutes later are pronounced dead due to alcohol
poisoning.
This is how alcohol affects the teenagers of America today. It ruins
lives and not only the lives of those who drink. It affects their friends
and family. It even affects people they do not know, the thousands of people
that are killed each year by drunk drivers. Many teens think they are
invincible, that nothing will ever happen to them. They will never drink too
much or be in an accident. But many lives are taken away because of underage
drinking. These people are killed in an instant, squashed like bugs on a
windshield. They never get to grow up and fulfill their dreams. They become
that bum on the street, staggering around and yelling obscene comments. They
are like the stray dog that never really finds a place in life.
So what is the solution to this problem? Stop the underage drinking.

Underage Drinking
Underage Drinking Introduction Underage drinking has long been, and continues to be, a serious
public health concern. "Teen alcohol use kills more than 4700 people each year and high school
students who use alcohol or other drugs are five times more likely to drop out of school" (MADD,
2014) than kids who do not. There have been years of underage drinking prevention programs to
curtail the use of alcohol by those under 21 years of age and yet alcohol is the most widely used
drug by adolescents in the United States (Wagoner et al. 2012). Underage drinking is a real problem
in all 50 states, even though there are laws in place to prohibit anyone under 21 years of age from

2012). Because of the growing issue of parents supplying alcohol to minors, 35 of 50 states
currently have Social Host laws in effect. This means if an adult is supplying minors with alcohol in
their home, they can be arrested and charged. These laws are an attempt to decrease the number of
adults hosting underage parties and supplying alcohol to minors (Wagoner et al. 2012). In addition
to social host laws, laws concerning restricted licenses for teens and limiting teen driving at night
seem to have had an impact on underage drinking. Additionally, license suspension laws for alcohol
violations are making kids think twice before they consume alcohol and drive (Hingson, 2014). Yet
underage drinking remains a nationwide concern and must continue to be addressed. Methodology

Abstract
This paper explores the research and find results on how drinking and driving has become a big
problem in the United States. Drinking and driving effects a person's ability to operate a vehicle and
therefore drunk drivers need to be educated on the repercussions with drinking and driving. Every
day drunk drivers are arrested, either for traffic violations, reckless driving, and random stops on the

There have been many cases of injuries due to drinking and driving. Whether it had to do with the
driver being drunk and getting injured, or being the one affected by the drunk driver. There have
even been laws that have been implemented to make it harder to get away with drinking and driving.
There are also many resources a driver who is drinking can think of to avoid drinking and driving.
Drinking and driving is extremely bad, especially if a person is thinking about operating vehicle.
Drunk drivers need to be educated on the repercussions
First off, every day drunk drivers are arrested either for traffic violations, reckless driving, or
random stops on the road etc. A drunk driver hears the siren of a cop car, sees the red flashing lights,
and a person in uniform knocking at their driver side window. An officer has pulled them over for
suspicious driving. If the officer smells a strong odor of alcohol, and the person exhibits slurred
speech or general incoherence they will be asked to exit their vehicle and move to the side of the
road where they will undergo the field of sobriety testing (Drinking and Driving Consequences and
Effects). If you fail to demonstrate that you are fine to operate a vehicle during these field tests, the
officer can then ask permission to perform a blood alcohol content test, or breathalyzer for short. If a
person is failing the tests the officers give them, the person is going to get arrested, get tickets, fines,
or even jail

Drinking Alcohol
Around the country there have been issues with the use of alcohol on college campuses. The
consumption of alcohol causes problems with the student's education, health, and behavior. Many
universities have had difficulties solving these problems. Alcohol should be banned from college
campuses. First, alcohol effects the student's education. Over half of all college students have
reported drinking between the ages of eighteen and twenty–four ("Alcohol Fact"). Of that fraction of
students, twenty–five percent of them have experienced challenges with their academics ("The
Burden of"). For most college students, drinking has become a part of their lives. Not only are these
students drinking on the weekends, they are also staying out late on school nights to party with
friends; this can result in an act of binge drinking. Binge drinking is when there is an excessive
amount of alcohol consumed in a short period of time ("Binge Drinking"). In a national survey, it
reported that students who took part in binge drinking were more likely to do poorly in a class than
those students who drank fewer times a week ("The Burden of"). By doing this they are risking the
chance of oversleeping or not being able to focus in class the next day. In college, attendance
mentally and physically is important. If a student fails at either one of them multiple times, the
chance of them failing the class is very likely. Failing a class in which the parents or students are
paying for is a waste of

Drinking: A Short Story
I grew up watching my grandfather drinking alcohol every day on the front porch of my house
during the evening. I never questioned that habit since I assumed it was something adults would
consider as a normal activity. As time passed, I began to address my disgust towards the habit of
drinking every day, it did not help, since my grandfather would step to the front porch and drink as
he would typically do. It was obvious that my attitude and beliefs towards the idea of drinking
strongly opposed my grandfather's drinking; however, this later transformed me into an open–
minded person that would welcome different perspectives that have permitted myself to contemplate
other people's beliefs. Afterwards, I discovered through research that drinking alcohol ... Show more

continued for several months until I finally felt discouraged and frustrated, since I realized that he
just did not care about what I thought. Therefore, there was no force in the world that would
effectively persuade him to quit, and I was tired of wasting my time and energy. It was obvious that
our opinions toward drinking differed in countless ways, but I could not understand how he could
not open his eyes and appreciate my standpoint. As I grew up, I initiated to realize matters that I had
never paid attention to. I found out that my grandfather was deeply suffering the loss of my

narrow–minded attitude and my lack of openness for other people's thoughts and viewpoints.

Essay On Drinking Under The Drinking Age
Teenagers use alcohol for multiple reasons; peer pressure, partys, anxiety, hard times , being
rebellious and sleep deprivation are just a couple reasons. Teenagers are in the category of "people".
The legal drinking age is currently twenty–one, but drinking underage is as low as zero. Why? This
is the question asked. I can almost garrentee you the under age drinking percentage would go down
significantly if the drinking ageI was lowered.
Just a few known reasons for under age drinking are: peer pressure, partys, etc. But the most
common reason for drinking is "breaking the law." 87% of high schoolers have drank alcohol.Alcoa

Some of them have reasons to why they drink; however others drink under peer pressure or just
because they want to. Many teens are going through a lot during their high school years and being
pressured and allowed to drink does not make it better or easier. A few reasons to drink underage
could be because of the religion that you follow or for some medical reasons. Lowering the
minimum legal drinking age might not decrease the number of underage drinkers.
When a teenager is going through a lot of changes they can be more vulnerable to bad influences
such as drinking and possibly driving under the influence. When some states' Minimum Legal
Drinking Age was moved to 21 years old in 1976, there was a decrease in fatal car accidents which
saved approximately 21,887 lives. Many lives were saved because there were less young drinkers
and less people driving under the influence. I think that's a lot of lives saved and I don't know why
people would want to risk losing more lives than we have too. If it's possible to save lives, why

The Drinking Age Should be Lowered Lowering the drinking age has been a huge controversy in

Many people believe that the drinking age was lowered because of health reasons, but it had nothing
to do with health–related problems. President Ronald Reagan gave highway funds to whoever
would sign the National Minimum Drinking Age Act (Miron). Alcohol is used for many reasons. It
is used for peer pressure, celebration, anxiety, rebellion and many other things. Although the
minimum drinking age is twenty–one, this does not stop people below that age from drinking.

Being in the war is one of the biggest sacrifices in America. In the military, one holds a great
amount of responsibility such as holding guns, flying planes and many other important jobs. It does
not make sense that eighteen year olds can have such big responsibilities, but when it comes to
drinking they aren't mature enough. Even later in life, one may experience the same effects as an
eighteen–year–old. The main question is at what age can someone be mature enough to make
decisions about their own life? Per Stefan Kiesbye, he has found a solution that would make
teenagers "mature" enough to drink. Parks, a college administrator, suggest that underage people
require a learner's permit ("Introduction..."). This permit would teach kids how to drink responsibly.
Most teenagers that drink have received no education about alcohol abuse and are usually sneaking
behind their parents backs. ("introduction..."). He says when people turn twenty–one, they do not all
the sudden become magically mature or wise about things ("Introduction..."). President John
Mcardell, also agrees that there should be a learner's permit. He has a bit of a twist on it though, he
says that people should get them if they have not been found guilty of alcohol problems in the past
(Hanson). The problem with this permit is that people would still abuse drinking, but it might help

Excessive Drinking In College
Secondly, excessive drinking can result if alcohol use becomes an integral part of peer interactions.
A recent study, which followed students throughout their college years and then reassessed them 4
and 7 years after graduation, revealed the social environment to be a highly significant predictor for
drinking in college [19]. In the context of the SLT construct of social reinforcement, both
socialisation and selection contribute to this process. Socialisation is evident when alcohol use
becomes prevalent, accepted and encouraged in peer interactions that were previously alcohol–free.
Thus, college friendships may initially develop in class or while socialising in contexts that do not
involve alcohol. The initiation and development of these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the context of SLT, this pathway can be viewed as the opposite of what occurs when peers
support heavy alcohol use. Specifically, peers encourage abstinence or light drinking through social
reinforcement (providing an environment that approves of this style of alcohol use), modelling
(peers abstain or drink lightly themselves) and cognitive processes (strong drink–refusal self–
efficacy, low expectancies that alcohol is needed to be social or popular). The little research
conducted on light drinkers and abstainers indicates that college students whose peers disapprove of
drinking or abstain report very little personal alcohol use [7,26]. In addition, freshmen whose social
networks consist mainly or entirely of abstainers are less likely to initiate alcohol use or drink
heavily (five or more drinks per occasion) than students whose social networks consist mainly of
drinkers [8,95]. Longitudinal research indicates that the alcohol–related attitudes and behaviours of
peers are significantly correlated with personal attitudes and behaviours at both low and high levels
of alcohol consumption, a relationship that is most probably the result of both selection and
socialisation [13,19]. In sum, associating with light drinkers or abstainers can prevent drinking from

In my opinion, they should not use them in their early ages because it is bad for themselves in
many ways. When they use it in early ages, it can be problem for their health and, it can be

In addition, drinking can cause some financial problems. Today, drinks are too expensive

Underage Drinking And Teenage Drinking

compelling information, the question is why haven 't we been able to do more to prevent the crisis
of underage drinking?
There are few different methods of controlling
the underage drinking and most of which the teachers, the parents and everyone who is willing to be

eliminating underage drinking: the first opinion being to have parental and teacher prevention
methods and the second opinion being that regulating the alcohol assumption age to 25. The goal of

I personally feel that breweries and distilleries should not have to give up their right to promote
sporting events and venues; this is how they keep their business alive. For example, during the 2003
Super Bowl, "fifteen of these (55) commercials were beer or malt liquor ads" (article 44: 531).
People should be allowed to kick back and have a good time while drinking a beer, but should not
allow their drinking to be an excuse for extremely stupid or violent behavior. The majority of the
ads for beer are directed towards men, showing them that "when drinking with the guys, a man can
feel close to his friends, perhaps even drape an arm over a friend's shoulder, embrace him, or tell

The Drinking Age Of 21
The drinking age in America should be lowered from 21 to 18. At 18, someone in America is legally
considered an adult, and they can indulge in things that are potentially far more harmful than
alcohol. Under certain circumstances, alcohol has already been permitted for people under the age
of 21. Furthermore, the drinking age of 21 is ineffective because people between the ages of 18 to
21 are still drinking regardless. However, this drinking often takes the shape of dangerous binge
drinking. Many college deans, who have first–hand knowledge of how ineffective the current
drinking age is, are in support of a lower drinking age. Reckless alcohol behavior of uneducated

Joining the army puts someone's life on the line. These are all serious actions that have serious
consequences.
America draws the line at drinking alcohol, which belittles 18 year olds, making them seem less like
adults. Someone could risk his or her life for his or her country, or wreck his or her body with
cigarettes, but drinking alcohol is forbidden. Some states agree that this logic is flawed, such as
Alaska, who passed a bill that allows active members of the military to drink at the age of 18, "with
the rationale that if they 're old enough to fight and die for their country, they 're old enough to have
a beer," (Brown). Being in the army is not the only time that there has been an exception for the
drinking age in America. Many young children and teenagers have had wine during communion at
Church, or during other religious ceremonies ("Frequently Asked Questions"). In over 37 states, if a
child is at home and accompanied by a parent, he or she may drink. For example, New York's stance
on underage drinking is that, "a person under the age of twenty–one years may possess any
alcoholic beverage with intent to consume if the alcoholic beverage is given... to the person under
twenty–one years of age by that person 's parent or guardian," ("Where Teenagers Can Legally

A college report showed that most kids are drinking to get drunk. In college a large sum and the
majority of students are under twenty one. This fact is showing the immaturity of the students and
more reasons the age should be twenty–one to drink. Drinking to get drunk and binge drinking are
irresponsible which those under twenty–one are continually showing that they are. Yes there are
adults who drink irresponsibly but the majority handle alcohol maturily. Some argue that there are
children who drink responsibly, how can a minor drink responsibly when drinking at all is illegal.
Binge drinking does more than harm the body , thsi is another reason the drinking age at eighteen

obtaining this goal can be a challenge. While the college life is a large part of the legal drinking age

College is often a time of discovery. Students learn educationally along with self–exploration. Many
students have not experienced living on their own exclusive of parental regulations. This new
responsibility encompasses self–accomplishments, self–discovery, and life lessons from mistakes.
Students that go to college often participate in drinking, partying, and binge drinking. This behavior
is frequently excused as what is ordinary of college students. Exploration of college student
drinking behaviors have relied profoundly on samples including majority of Europeans Americans
along with a few minorities students. This study concerns Hispanic students as the majority and
their involvement in alcohol consumption. This study's hypothesis was that both men and women's
alcohol consumption could be anticipated based on acculturation. Furthermore, the study estimated
that men regularly ingest more alcohol and participate in binge drinking compared to women. A
public university along the Texas and Mexico border had 309 students volunteer to participate in the

Binge Drinking In Australia

  • 1. Binge Drinking In Australia Alcohol is the most commonly used drug in Australia (The Australian Drug Foundation, 2014). The term binge drinking is defined as drinking heavily over a short period of time with the intention of becoming intoxicated (Druginfo.adf.org.au, 2009). Binge drinking is spreading across Australia and is now having a greater affect on adolescents. There are things that individuals, schools, families and governments can do in order to minimise binge drinking. The effects that alcohol has on the body depend on a range of thing such as how often you are drinking, the strength of the drink you drink and how much you drink (Dame, 2016). Alcohol has both short–term and long–term effects on the body. Some short–term effects include alcohol poisoning, blackouts, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most schools offer health as a subject but binge drinking is not emphasised enough and as students get older the subject becomes optional which means student are likely not to take it but it is in the older ages that the children are going out to parties and binge drinking. Binge drinking is having a large effect on teenagers across Australia. Teenagers binge drinking on the weekends is affecting their education as some are coming to school with bad hangovers. "Students who used alcohol and other drugs came to school late, tired, and often with a poor attitude, the principals said". Australian teacher said that it was harder to teach those who had big weekends (ABC News, 2014). The Northern Territory government could look at offering talks in order to educate parents hoping that they go away and consider their child's behaviour. If the parents aren't educated then they may not see a problem with what their child is doing. Once they are educated they can give their child the opportunity to live a better lifestyle with minimal drinking in order to reduce the long term effects it could have on their ... • 2. Underage Drinking The primary idea of this paper is, how alcohol effects high school students academically. To calculate this measure of achievement, they measured the student's grade point average. Williams Powell, and Wechsler studied the association between alcohol consumption, and GPA. Versus DeSimone, and Wolaver's investigated the effect of underage drinking with high school students. Throughout the latter study, a negative association was found among drinking and high school students. Research on adolescent brain development stated that, the physical development of the brain structure could be affected negativity by excessive consumption of alcohol. The national Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health employed data from a couple of waves that contained ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cook, Moore, and Yamada concluded that excessive drinking can affect the completion of high school and college. Wolaver concluded that binge drinking among males and females could risk receiving a lower GPA. A negative correlation was said to be found among females in college, versus a positive one on females who attended high school. With the use of standard regression analysis, by DeSimone, and Wolaver, they were able to find that GPA was lower by 0.4 for binge drinkers. The studies on GPA effected by drinking concluded that it had negative effect. First GPA was concluded by self–reported, second a cross sectional data was used. Add Health was used to study health – related "behavior of adolescent in grades 7 through 12"(Balsa). The study consisted of interviews that were done at home, and were re interviewed a year later (Balsa). "The main interest of this study was abstracted from GPA in school transcripts, which had a linkage to the respondents at each wave" (Balsa). CAPI/CASI questions were used during this process. Although results in males were negative, alcohol still had an effect on GPA. However, for females the coefficient was smaller for binge–drinking and excessive drinking. Male's excessive alcohol use of 100 drinks per month was related with an increase of 4 % probability of difficulty in school. In "females the coefficient was positive and larger than males and out of four, five were statistically significant" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Preventing Underage Drinking It's both dangerous and against the law, but young people between the ages of 12 and 20 are responsible for 11 percent of the alcohol consumed annually in the United States. Underage drinking also accounts for more than 4,300 deaths of young people in the U.S. each year. Here are some signs that may indicate a teenager has been abusing alcohol. Major red flags include differences in sleep patterns, appetite, and change of friends or physical appearance. When teens fall in with a social circle that drinks heavily, they may display a change in attitude and hang out in places and with people they did not associate with before. They may also lose interest in activities they used to participate in. Underage drinking can lead to increased absences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Parents in particular can have either a positive or negative influence. Parents can help their children avoid alcohol problems by talking about the dangers of drinking, drinking responsibly, if they choose to drink, serving as positive role models in general, not making alcohol available, getting to know their children's friends, having regular conversations about life in general, connecting with other parents about sending clear messages about the importance of not drinking alcohol, supervising all parties to make sure there is no alcohol, encouraging kids to participate in healthy and fun activities that do not involve alcohol. Research shows that children whose parents are actively involved in their lives are less likely to drink alcohol. On the other hand, research shows that a child with a parent who binge drinks is much more likely to binge drink than a child whose parents do not binge ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Underage Drinking And Teenage Drinking Alex Wilmore Joshua James, Instructor ENG 111 07 July 2015 Underage Drinking "With such compelling information, the question is why haven 't we been able to do more to prevent the crisis of underage drinking? The answer is: rising the age to 25" is what Lucille Roybal–Allard once said, a U.S. Representative for serving in Congress since 1993. This statement has brought many to speculate of issues and debates. This expression opened the eyes of American people that often struggled to make this truth into a reality. It might be easy to believe that age laws lowered the deaths of the underage but there are still signs of its dreadful company in many pieces of American life. Families who choose to educate their children about underage drinking and driving, seem to have a higher chance of getting through with the child. These underage teens can face jail or death when they give drinking a chance and even attempt to drive, having a sexual intercourse or just plain out doing something out of the teen's element. There are few different methods of controlling the underage drinking and most of which the teachers, the parents and everyone who is willing to be involved. The underage drinking can be narrowed to two different opinions of effective methods of eliminating underage drinking: the first opinion being to have parental and teacher prevention methods and the second opinion being that regulating the alcohol assumption age to 25. The goal of this research is to take a look at some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Drinking Age Drinking There has been an ongoing discussion in the United States on whether the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen like most of the world or if it should stay at twenty–one. Underage drinking has been a major questionable issue for years, yet why is it not under control? Teenagers are continuing to buy alcohol with fake identification cards, getting into bars and drinking illegally. As a recent teen, I have proof that these things are going on not only in college but in high school as well. There are a lot of factors that come together to why the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen. The most obvious reason is too many people are drinking before they are twenty–one. Liquor stores, bars, and clubs all want to make money and if they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, these states were later essentially bribed by Congress which used fiscal blackmail and threatened to retract funding for highway construction – to pass the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which forced all states to change their legal drinking age to 21. In the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, it is stated that no state shall "deprive any person of life, liberty, or property." If the Constitution clearly declares that the States cannot discriminate in any way that will deny a person his civil rights, why is the government allowing states to create another second–class citizen in the millions of people aged 18 to 21 unable to drink like the rest of the adults in the country? After all, the government is ready and willing to allow its citizens to die fighting for their country, but suddenly, a beer puts these citizens too much at risk. Lowering the legal drinking age to 18 would make alcohol less of a forbidden fruit, taking away the thrill that many young people get from breaking the law, make alcohol less of a taboo for adult's newly entering college and the workforce, and make alcohol consumption a more normalized activity done in moderation. A drinking age of 21 only forces alcohol consumption behind closed doors. Always unsupervised, done in secret and too often excessive, this style of drinking among minors has no doubt been responsible for the alarming rise in rates of dangerous binge drinking at colleges. In 2006, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Drinking And Driving Drinking and driving is not always a right thing. When people drink and drive the action of it could get extremely dangerous. Wrecks are one of the main problems that can happen when some people are drunk because some can lose control of what they are trying to do and end up wrecking. Another problem is driving under the influence of being on drugs. This can cause serious damage. When people are on drugs, they lose train of thought and half of the time, they forget what they are doing. It does not end too well. People can become abusive because they usually do not exactly know what they are doing. Usually, people do drugs to get their minds or to make them feel better when they are emotional, but when others do so much, they lose control ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, some of the money was spent on high school driver education, which increased teenage driving without reducing the number of crashes per driver, thus increasing deaths" (Robertson 296).When driving while on any kind of drug can mess up your train in thought. Although people tend to lose what they was thinking before and everything else, but most of all some forget about the dangerous outcome that will happen when they are on them. Throughout the year there has been a big change in the numbers going up on crashes. There are now programs that can help them so they can get out of everything and all the drugs that you're on (Robertson 295). They have made vast progress: based on random stops, the number of drivers with any alcohol in their system was 35.9% in 1973. By 2007, the figure had fallen to 12.4%, according to the Department of Transportation" (Gray 54).Police to this day are still trying to get people to stop drinking and driving and doing drugs and driving. There has been so many wrecks and people dying over this case. Some people do not really understand how dangerous it can be and they still continue to do it. It was becoming to the point police can not really get anyone to understand even with them being taken into prison (Gray 54). • 7. Episodic Drinking Furthermore, many scholars argued that heavy drinking may be associated with negative mental and physical health. Evidence demonstrates that exposure to alcohol can cause irreversible brain damage. After reading various research, I determined that age is an important factor in the development of alcohol tolerance, and I also reflected on the outcome it can have on the brain. Marisa M Silveri, an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School carried out a research on separate age groups, and came out with the following results: Studies using animal models have also suggested that heavy episodic alcohol exposure during adolescence is associated with significant deficits in memory retention, greater cumulative damage than chronic exposure and long–term changes in cognition.Heavy episodic patterns of alcohol consumption may make the brain more susceptible to damage, particularly at a time–emerging adulthood–when heavy episodic drinking levels peak and the brain is undergoing the final stages of maturational refinement (Silveri). ... The AMA (American Medical Association) report done on liquor repercussions on the mind indicates that adolescence is the period where our brain goes through the most important transformations; hence, the intake of alcoholic drinks may result to: visual spatial, memory lacks which may produce poor school performances, social problems, depressions, suicidal thoughts and violence (USA Today Magazine). • 8. Video On Underage Drinking The video on underage drinking further highlighted information that I was already aware of. Over the last several years, I have seen multiple news stories covering the Midwest's drinking problem. According to Bustle.com, Lincoln was found to be one of the top ten drunkest cities in America. This doesn't come as much of a shock to me. Drinking is part of Nebraska's culture. Small Nebraska towns are full of drinkers; even minors are allowed to participate. Even though I am from a small town, I didn't drink until I was in college, and even then I did so in a responsible manner. My family and friends never encouraged or participated in drinking, so I never really felt the need to. However, the same can't be said for many of my high school peers. ... Driving is an integral part of our daily routines however, the dangers that accompany driving the transport are often ignored. From the Monash University Accident Research Centre, a study found that 13.5% of the crashes were because of drunk driving (Australian Mobile Telecommunication Association, 2011). According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)( n.d.), binge drinking is defined as "A pattern of drinking that results in harm to one's health, interpersonal relationships, or ability to work". Further research into this issue has found that more than 1,000 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die from alcohol–related unintentional injuries every year (NIAAA, 2015). • 11. Binge Drinking And The Minimum Legal Drinking Age Karzhova Marina Erin Beaver English Composition II 5 November 2014 Binge Drinking and the Minimum Legal Drinking Age In the year 1984, President Ronald Reagan enacted a law that increased the minimum drinking Age all U.S states to 21 years. As a result, it is believed that the mortality rates due to road accidents reduced from 5,000 in the 80's to 2, 000 in 2005 (Dean–Mooney). However, the issue of binge drinking remains unsolved with learning institutions having to deal with it every semester. In response to this, 134 college presidents formed the Amethyst Initiative, which is, a proposal allowing persons aged between 18 and 20 to consume alcoholic drinks Conversely, the Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD), which pushed for the enactment of the law in 1984 believes that the Amethyst Initiative is misplaced. The push for a lower drinking age is a battle between the parental community and the student fraternity. For the drinking age too be lowered the Amethyst Initiative must compile concrete research and facts to support its findings. Nonetheless, historical data shows that increase in the minimum legal drinking age results in a decrease in the amount of deaths. As argued by Barry, Stellefson and Woosley, "the MLDA clearly reduces alcohol consumption and its associated harms" (8). In light of this, one can argue that the minimum drinking age should remain at 21 as lowering it may cause fatal consequences. The factors can be broadly classified as internal, such as ... • 15. Drinking Age Drinking Essay In the United States, the legal age of adulthood is eighteen. When a person reaches this age, they are capable to vote, buy tobacco products, get married without their parents' consent, enlist in the military, along with many more privileges. One privilege that is not included is the ability to buy and legally consume alcoholic beverages. The legal age for drinking in the U.S. is twenty–one. If they are considered "adults" when they turn eighteen, why do they have to wait three more years to legally drink? This very question is pondered daily by many Americans. If they are mature enough to make the decisions that come with the privileges they gain at the age of eighteen, they should also be able to buy and consume alcohol legally. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, excessive drinking in underage youth is responsible for more than 4,300 deaths each year. • 18. Bine Drinking Vs Binge Drinking America perfectly represents the ideals of the Enlightenment: the land of the free and the home of the brave; a nation in which citizens can choose who they want to be and what they want to do. Throughout the Revolutionary War, the colonists relied on each other for support and no one could afford the luxury of a peaceful, secluded life. That emphasis on sociability became a part of the American identity. Lung cancer has declined steadily over the last thirty years (Cancer Statistics Report), but liver cancer incidents have tripled over that time period as Americans are binge drinking now more than ever (Key Statistics About Liver Cancer). While, at times, smoking can be social and drinking can be anti–social, America's emphasis on gregariousness causes society to hypocritically scorn smoking but tolerate binge drinking because smoking is an anti–social activity whereas binge drinking is a social activity. Advertisement posters against smoking and binge drinking differ because of the USA's cultural values, particularly due to the solidarity of smoking versus the camaraderie of drinking. Although binge drinking is typically considered four drinks for women and five drinks for men in a two–hour span, this fails to account for someone's height, weight, and food consumed, and therefore many people have no idea if they are binge drinking or not, causing some to black out (Drinking Levels Defined). President John Mcardell, also agrees that there should be a learner's permit. He has a bit of a twist on it though, he says that people should get them if they have not been found guilty of alcohol problems in the past (Hanson). The problem with this permit is that people would still abuse drinking, but it might help some teenagers and maybe even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Excessive Drinking In College Secondly, excessive drinking can result if alcohol use becomes an integral part of peer interactions. A recent study, which followed students throughout their college years and then reassessed them 4 and 7 years after graduation, revealed the social environment to be a highly significant predictor for drinking in college [19]. In the context of the SLT construct of social reinforcement, both socialisation and selection contribute to this process. Socialisation is evident when alcohol use becomes prevalent, accepted and encouraged in peer interactions that were previously alcohol–free. Thus, college friendships may initially develop in class or while socialising in contexts that do not involve alcohol. The initiation and development of these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the context of SLT, this pathway can be viewed as the opposite of what occurs when peers support heavy alcohol use. Specifically, peers encourage abstinence or light drinking through social reinforcement (providing an environment that approves of this style of alcohol use), modelling (peers abstain or drink lightly themselves) and cognitive processes (strong drink–refusal self– efficacy, low expectancies that alcohol is needed to be social or popular). The little research conducted on light drinkers and abstainers indicates that college students whose peers disapprove of drinking or abstain report very little personal alcohol use [7,26]. In addition, freshmen whose social networks consist mainly or entirely of abstainers are less likely to initiate alcohol use or drink heavily (five or more drinks per occasion) than students whose social networks consist mainly of drinkers [8,95]. Longitudinal research indicates that the alcohol–related attitudes and behaviours of peers are significantly correlated with personal attitudes and behaviours at both low and high levels of alcohol consumption, a relationship that is most probably the result of both selection and socialisation [13,19]. In sum, associating with light drinkers or abstainers can prevent drinking from becoming a prominent part of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some of them try it just for one time, and they can leave them easily but the others can not overcome it. They can use them for many reasons. In my opinion, they should not use them in their early ages because it is bad for themselves in many ways. When they use it in early ages, it can be problem for their health and, it can be in a bad way. Also, it can cause some financial problems, and they can have some bad friends in their life. For me, it encourages them to be robbed because they will find the solution to take the money from the other people. Even they can steal the money from their parents.

  • 37. • 38. Drinking Arguments I personally feel that breweries and distilleries should not have to give up their right to promote sporting events and venues; this is how they keep their business alive. For example, during the 2003 Super Bowl, "fifteen of these (55) commercials were beer or malt liquor ads" (article 44: 531). People should be allowed to kick back and have a good time while drinking a beer, but should not allow their drinking to be an excuse for extremely stupid or violent behavior. The majority of the ads for beer are directed towards men, showing them that "when drinking with the guys, a man can feel close to his friends, perhaps even drape an arm over a friend's shoulder, embrace him, or tell him that he loves him" (article 44: 533). • 39. The Drinking Age Of 21 The drinking age in America should be lowered from 21 to 18. At 18, someone in America is legally considered an adult, and they can indulge in things that are potentially far more harmful than alcohol. Under certain circumstances, alcohol has already been permitted for people under the age of 21. Furthermore, the drinking age of 21 is ineffective because people between the ages of 18 to 21 are still drinking regardless. However, this drinking often takes the shape of dangerous binge drinking. Many college deans, who have first–hand knowledge of how ineffective the current drinking age is, are in support of a lower drinking age. Reckless alcohol behavior of uneducated underage drinkers also leads to drunk driving, instead of confiding in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Joining the army puts someone's life on the line. These are all serious actions that have serious consequences. America draws the line at drinking alcohol, which belittles 18 year olds, making them seem less like adults. Someone could risk his or her life for his or her country, or wreck his or her body with cigarettes, but drinking alcohol is forbidden. Some states agree that this logic is flawed, such as Alaska, who passed a bill that allows active members of the military to drink at the age of 18, "with the rationale that if they 're old enough to fight and die for their country, they 're old enough to have a beer," (Brown). Being in the army is not the only time that there has been an exception for the drinking age in America. Many young children and teenagers have had wine during communion at Church, or during other religious ceremonies ("Frequently Asked Questions"). In over 37 states, if a child is at home and accompanied by a parent, he or she may drink. For example, New York's stance on underage drinking is that, "a person under the age of twenty–one years may possess any alcoholic beverage with intent to consume if the alcoholic beverage is given... to the person under twenty–one years of age by that person 's parent or guardian," ("Where Teenagers Can Legally Drink").
