Procrastination, and my college experiences

Monday, july 17, 2000 According to the article (Magazine: Journal do– Genetic Psychology,
December 1999), procrastination is referred as the act of needlessly delaying a task until the point
of some discomfort. This is a behavior problem that many adults experience on a regular basis. In
this paper I will be talking about two studies that researched about how procrastination hits students.
It will also talk about ways to put an end to procrastination and give stories about people who
overcame procrastination and achieved their goals. Toward the end I will talk about how
procrastination effected me in my first semester....show more content...
To stop procrastination it is necessary to have a time plan, and estimate how long an assignment
will take. Remember that your priority is the assignment that it is due first. A good idea is to
break up jobs into sessions "inch by inch, life is a cinch, yard by yard, life is hard". (Sr. Maureen's
saying to me.) Have a goal on what you want to achieve. When an assignment is done, reward
yourself!
Here are some helpful hints to help you stop procrastinating.
 Have positive statements around your room.
 Use a timer.
 Get all materials in place before you start.
 Get started!
Conclusion
As you can see procrastination is a problem to students since it will get in the way of their
schoolwork. As I said before procrastination is to put things off for later, and this is why it gets in the
way. I have talked about the different studies, stopping procrastination and some helpful hints.
Hopefully this paper will open the minds of most students out there and prevent them from
procrastinating, and show their real talent at schoolwork.

To procrastinate is to put off doing something out of casual carelessness or common laziness. It
often needlessly postpones or delays events or objectives in your life which can effect others.
Procrastination is almost like a drug in your life, because once you start doing it a little bit, it
slowly adds up to a dependency that you will find to be common habit. Although this is what we all
perceive procrastination to be bad, there are some benefits to it. It can have beneficial impact on
how you take pressure, or how well you can act when time is limited.
Procrastination is something that you don't naturally have an innate ability to do. It is often brought
on by finding ways...show more content...
But it will progressively add up in most cases, the student will start to not study like they know
they should be, but rather they go and do something else that isn't as beneficial. After a while that
people start to do this they think its not bad, even thought they are missing a few points here and
there from lowered studies and completed work. But it can eventually lean up to skipping classes,
which is one of the worse things you can do while in college, since generally there are no make
ups for missed assignments and test. This can then hurt your grades entirely, and therefore may
have you retake certain classes or take another year. This in turn can cause financial problems if it
where to happen on multiple occasions, then can effect your later life on paying off the bills or
charges that were made from it.
Procrastination is not always a very bad thing though; there are some points in your life that it
could prove to be a plus. If done enough you will be use to doing things last minute, which could
possibly help you in your career with handling pressure when you boss tells you do something
within a set amount of time. Also extended amounts of doing this bad habit could help you learn to
take pressure better, as example when you have a huge paper due by the next morning and you
need to keep your self calm or else it will show when your writing the paper. Even though these
sound like positive measures to procrastinating they are really not worth the

4. Procrastination Essay
Procrastination
Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. Procrastination has a
high potential for painful consequences. It may interfere with our personal or academic success.
There are those of us who wait until the due date is a day away. I am not talking about making sure
the money is in the bank. I am talking about putting it off because it is a tedious chore that we do
not enjoy doing.
Procrastination is a big problem for many, and one that can harm your career. Whether your
procrastination causes you to arrive late at work or late for meetings, or keeps you from turning
projects in on time, employers do not look positively upon it...show more content...
If this is the case, begin at the beginning, with the first segment, and do it extraordinarily well. But
only strive for perfection where it counts. The rest of the time, just do it. Remember, the next time
you're procrastinating and can't seem to overcome it, stop and figure out why. Is the task even worth
doing? If so, pick the appropriate solution based upon the root cause and you'll whittle away those
piles in no time.
Also procrastination can be stopped if you recognize self–defeating problems such as fear and
anxiety, difficulty concentrating, poor time management, indecisiveness and perfectionism. Identify
your own goals, strengths and weaknesses, values and priorities. Compare your actions with the
values you feel you have. Are your values consistent with your actions?
Discipline yourself to use time wisely: Set priorities. Study in small blocks instead of long time
periods. For example, you will accomplish more if you study/work in 60 minute blocks and take
frequent 10 minute breaks in between, than if you study/work for 2–3 hours straight, with no breaks.
Reward yourself after you complete a task. Motivate yourself to study: Dwell on success, not on
failure. Try to study in small groups. Break large assignments into small tasks. Keep a reminder
schedule and checklist. Set realistic goals. Modify your environment: Eliminate or minimize noise
/ distraction. Ensure adequate lighting. Have necessary equipment at hand.

5. Procrastinating Argumentative Essay
Procrastination
Procrastination is the act or habits of putting things off till the end out of laziness. Almost every
student knows this dreaded word. They know if it becomes a habit, disaster happens with a sharp
decline in school grades. But what they don't realize is that procrastinating can actually benefit you
in school. It can make you work harder, faster, and more efficiently on school assignments. Even life
skills in the real world can be created from procrastinating.
Procrastination can actually help you work harder, faster, and more efficiently. It sounds like an
impossible thing, however if you're like me or any other person that wants a fairly good mark on the
next assignment, procrastinating can help you. While your...show more content...
It actually helps you, because it gives that need of drive to actually still maintain a good mark on
it. Efficiency comes in when you have your daily homework piled on to your assignment, the need
to get the assignment done kicks in. You will feel less of a need to do other things that you normally
do, and cut down on the breaks, including the old rest up and watch TV, one.
Also essential life skills in the real world become developed through procrastinating. In the busy
world of work, everyone knows that that boss of yours will always set impossible deadlines. The
knowing of having to get it done perfectly and fast is always on the employer's mind. When
already experienced through procrastinating, you will already know the field of trying to cram a lot
of work into a very little time frame.
Procrastination can honestly boast you to higher levels of achievement. It makes you nervous and
deadlines will be hanging from your head. It helps set a planning stage for you, and makes you
aware of all the other tasks that is needed to be completed. The management of time will also be
used. Time managing of what to do first and last including dividing the assignment into steps, or
knowing what to do to get the best result within a smaller amount of time is very handy in the feature.
This habit is not so dreaded at all. I feel that procrastinating isn't all that bad, and actually benefits
you. Like I said, it gives

6. Essay about Procrastination
When you conquer procrastination, you will learn what it is, how it happens and finally experience
success by not allowing it to happen again.
Procrastination happens when a task is put off until a later time because the task is not desirable.
There are several reasons procrastination happens including, confusion and misunderstanding exactly
what needs done and how to do it. Procrastination causes lack of production, loss of time, and
decrease in revenue. "Procrastination is one main cause of poor management, lost productivity, and
lost revenue" (Ricci, 2004).
Putting something off until later can actually be more exhausting than the task at hand. Although
usually putting things off until later is not a desired action; it can be a...show more content...
Start with the most difficult tasks with a high energy level. As the energy level decreases, work
on the easier tasks. If a task is too large to complete in one setting, break it down into several
smaller tasks. Maintain discipline by not stopping until the task is complete. Allowing interruptions
at specific times will reduce the number of distractions. Organization skills are depended on to
achieve tasks easier. Creating a tidy work area will produce a positive environment. Brainstorming
can be an incredible process and give the ability to list everything that a specific task requires.
Imagine yourself doing the task and speak to yourself. Talking to yourself could result in a positive
reaction and prevent procrastination from becoming a habit. Following through and force the
completion of a task will fend falling into an unmanageable practice.
Finding a motivational reward may help to become successful in beating procrastination. Receiving
a reward at the end of small tasks will encourage the completion of the rest of the tasks, which will
in turn accomplish goals. Mistakes are not bad they are a learning tool. Without making mistakes,
the same result would happen repeatedly. Prepare for the worst possible outcome and find a
reasonable solution.
Defeat procrastination by learning what it is, how it happens and experience victory by not allowing
it to become a habit. Following simple steps

1. What am I talking about? I am the thief of productiveness and time. I sound simple, but in fact
I'm quite complex. I am a strange phenomenon. My purpose seems to make my life more pleasant,
but instead it almost always adds stress, disorganization, and frequent failure. I want to achieve
some outcome, usually something myself and others can value and respect; "I've got to start." I
delay briefly thinking of real and imagined advantages of starting to change later; "I will do it
tomorrow."

Your environment is distracting and noisy. You keep running back and forth for equipment such as
pencils, erasers, dictionaries, and etc. Your desk is cluttered and unorganized and sometimes you
even sit or lay on your bed to study or do your assignments. All of these examples that you just heard
promote time wasting and frustration which prohibits you from staying concentrated.
5. Though I've only touched on a couple, there are many more reasons for procrastinating such as
fear of anxiety or failure and even personnel or financial problems. So, you might be asking, how do
I know if I'm a procrastinator or not? Well, this brings me to my second point, symptoms of
procrastination. One of the worst aspects of procrastination is postponement. When one is
postponing an important task, it becomes very difficult to enjoy recreational activities. One is
socializing with friends or watching a film, and there is this nagging thought, "I should be
working." A dark cloud of guilt hangs over your head and dampens any pleasure you might be
extracting from the distractions of the moment. So, by not getting things done in a reasonably and
timely manner, or not done at all, precious opportunities have been lost.
6. Another symptom of procrastination is stress. What this is, is the way you react physically,
mentally, and emotionally to the various conditions, changes, and demands in

Procrastination, putting things off until the last minute, can have serious consequences on a person's
life. I fully agree with this statement because I have personally been affected by procrastination,
waiting until the last minute will never do you any good. The main reason why procrastination isn't
a great idea is because the amount of stress that comes along with doing things at the very last
minute. When you get stressed you're more prone to making mistakes than if you did it a week
before the project was due, the more mistakes the worse your grade will be. It is very hard to take
care of the small detail when you're in such hurry just to complete the project. I remember back in
high school waking up with droll stuck to my cheek it...show more content...
So my terrible day did not end at school, when I got home my dad took my xbox from me until i
was entirely done with my junior paper and until I brought my grade back up in history class. It
didn't help matters that my history teacher was a stifler on doing test its worth forty percent of
our grade. I have also procrastinated and made a really good grades too, but i may have gotten a
good grade but i was still up super late and biting everyone's head off i came in contact with. I was
as upset as a bull with a rubber band wrapped tightly around his testicles, being this upset comes
with a price however i was mentally exhausted and a lot of people were upset at me.
Sometimes procrastination can get you killed, this becomes true when you put off your medical
condition or you put off having that surgery you need just because you don't want to take the time
to do so. We as human beings tend to stray away from the thing we do not enjoy doing, that
explains why I did not want to do my junior paper because writing isn't my most favorite thing to
do. I honestly do not believe there is anything good that could come from procrastination, because
the time you spent procrastinating cannot be given back to you it is considered wasted time. Also
being a procrastinator can affect your reputation, nobody ever wants to be known as the person who
cannot keep their word. So take a word from the wise procrastination is not
