Professional Identity Workshop - Scoring Professional Identiity Essays
1. The objective of this workshop is to give you the knowledge and tools to use the
Professional Identity Essay (PIE) assessment of Professional Identity Formation (PIF) in
medical education in an interactive small group setting. You will get hands-on
experience in analyzing PIE essays, writing developmental feedback for students, and
using PIE in one-on-one coaching of students in remediation. You will:
Learn about the history and background of the PIE as a holistic assessment of
PIF, and how it can contribute to a shift in medical school culture, from a fixed to
growth mindset;
Explore how PIE helps medical students build resilience to make sense of
setbacks and failures as opportunities for growth;
Learn best practices and ethical considerations of administering, interpreting, and
reporting PIE;
Gain hands-on experience in small groups analyzing PIE assessments;
Explore qualitative content analysis of themes for use in curriculum development,
course evaluation, or basic research;
Apply the principles of writing developmental feedback for students in courses
and individual coaching;
Share and discuss your school’s goals in teaching and assessing Professional
Identity Formation and contribute to forming a collective research agenda; and
Learn how schools can participate in ongoing research on PIF using PIE.
