1. 1) In whatwaysdoesyour mediaproductuse,developorchallenge formsandconventionsof
real mediaproducts?
My mediaproduct(musicmagazine) predominantlyconformstothe formsandconventions
of a magazine.Howeverone waythatit challengesthese conventionsisthe banneracross
the top of the frontpage.Thisis somethingnottoooftenseenonmagazineshoweveris
seenissome rare cases. I chose to dothisas I saw it onan existingfrontcoverandfeltthatit
lookedveryattractive.Ialsofelt thatthiswouldbe suitable formymusicmagazine asit
meantthat I couldput some textsuchas exclusivesinthe bannerasa posedtothe restof
the front coverwhichwouldmeancoveringsome more of the image, somethingIdidn’t
wantto do as I feltthat anymore texton the image wouldmake the image hardertosee,
and makingthe image lessattractive aslesswouldbe visible. The layoutof mymagazine
conformsto whatI have seeninexistingmagazineswithaone pagedfrontcover,single
pagedcontentspage, double page spreadwithanimage onone side, anda full page
advertisement.Ichose tolayout mymagazine like thisasthisiswhat I had seendone inall
of the existingmagazinesthatIlookedatandso I replicatedthisinmymagazine asto
conformand make my magazine fitinwiththe existingmusicmagazines. The eye flow of my
double page spreadisa ‘C’withan image coveringthe entiretyof the leftsideandwriting
coveringthe right.ThisissomethingIhadseeninmost of the magazines thatI lookedatand
therefore somethingthatI replicatedinmydouble page spreadsothatitwouldfitinwith
the formsand conventionsof magazines. The imagesinmymagazine primarilyhave been
editedsothattheyare brightand have cleardefinedcolours.Howeverone of themhas
beeneditedtolookfaded.Ihave done thisto make the magazine conformtothe lookof
indie/alternative/rockasthisissomethingthatIsaw withthe imagesinmagazinessuchas
NME.
2) How doesyourmediaproductrepresentparticularsocial groups?
My magazine wastargetedat
predominantlyindie/rockmusicfans
and so thiswasthe group that I triedto
showinmy magazine throughthe
imagesandmodelsthatI usedinthe
images.Thisparticularsocial groupis
representedthroughthe clothingand
agesof the modelsinthe images.This
groupbeingall agedunder30 and
dressedpredominantlycasuallybutstill
not scruffy.Thisindie styleis
characterisedbythe casual layered
lookwithfew/nobrandnamesshown
inthe image onthe right.This is
therefore somethingthatI have
reflectedinthe imagesusedinmy
magazine where youngcasually
dressedmodelshave beenusedthroughout.
3) What kindof mediainstitutionwoulddistribute yourmediaproductandwhy?
2. The institutionthatwoulddistribute mymediaproduct
wouldbe the internationalpublishingcompany(IPCmedia
group).I have chosenthisgroupas theyare basedprimarily
inthe UnitedKingdom,meaningthatmymagazine canbe
more focusedonmusicfrom the UnitedKingdom, something
I wantedthe magazine tobe more focusedaround. This
wouldalsobe a betterstartingpointforthe magazine rather
than beingpublishedbyacompanybasedaroundthe worldas it wouldallow forthe brand
to be more easilyestablishedandfocused inone countrytostart with. I have alsochosen
thisinstitutionastheypublishthe magazine ‘NME’amagazine similartomine inthe styling
and musicthat theyfocuson,thiswouldthenmeanthat the mediainstitutionalreadyhas
experience withamagazine verysimilartomine andwouldmeanthatthisexperience would
thenhelpmine tosucceedinthe market.
4) Who wouldbe the audience of yourproduct?
The target audience formymagazine wouldbe predominantlymalesaged17to 30. Thisis
somethingthatIhave reflectedinthe magazine predominantlythroughthe coloursused,
blacksand redsand the agesand sexesof the modelsusedthroughoutthe magazine, all
beingmalesaged17-30. My targetaudience shouldnotbe definedbyincome asthe
magazine ispricedat £3.99, a reasonable price whichwouldnotexclude anyparticular
groupwithany income.Althoughthisistrue the language inmymagazine isrelativelyurban
and colloquial whichwouldtargetthe magazine more towardsthe youngeraudience, who
woulduse thislanguage ona regularbasiswhereasthe olderaudiencesmaynot. My
audience isalsolikelytohave an’E’ NRS social grade as theyare predominantlystudents
withouta source of income.Thiscouldhoweverstretchupasfar as to people inthe ‘B’
categoryas these are people withmore creative jobsinmedia, people whoare likelytobe
interestedinandmayevenhave jobsinvolvingmedia.Aswell asthisthe theme of my
magazine (indie) isall aboutcreativityandexpression,somethingpeoplewiththesekindsof
jobsinmediaand designare stronglyinfluencedby,possiblymakingmymagazine appeal to
thisaudience. The psychographicprofileof myaudience wouldbe ‘Explorers’theseare the
kindof people whoembrace individualism, somethingthe indie genre isall about. As well as
this,thisgroupof people tendstobe a youngerdemographic,usuallystudents,thisbeing
the group that I am targetingmymagazine towards.
5) How didyouattract/addressyouraudience?
I attractedmy audience,firstly throughthe pricingof mymagazine.Thiswaspricedat£3.99,
a price easilyaccessibletothe audience of studentswithoutanincome asthisisrelatively
cheapfor a magazine, especiallysince itisamonthlyissue. Ialsoattractedmy audience
throughthe use of modelsthatI usedthroughoutthe magazine. These beingpredominantly
males17-30(one female).Thisthenwouldattractmy audience of youngmalesthrough
showingthatthisiswho the magazine istargetedatand makingthe magazine more
relatable forthistargetaudience.The colourscheme alsoappealstothisaudience asitis
predominantlywhite, redandblack. These coloursare nottoo brightas to make the
magazine appearchildishandappeal toayoungeraudience howeverthere isstillalotof
colourto make the magazine aestheticallypleasingandpreventitfromlookingtooformal.
Thisthenappealstothe age group that mymagazine istargetedat as,17-30 yearolds. My
magazine wasalsoaddressedtothe targetaudience throughthe choice of advertisement.
3. Thisis as itwas for Nike trainers, anironically youngbrand.Thiswouldthenappeal tothe
youngerindie audience whothesetrainersare targetedat.
6) What have youlearntabout technologiesfromthe processof constructingthe product?
