Queen Liuokalani Research Paper
The first and only reigning Hawaiian queen and the last Hawaiian sovereign to govern the islands, her name is Queen Liliuokalani. In the
childhood of Queen Liliuokalani, there were lot's interesting facts about her childhood to her adult life. I thought she was just a great Queen of
Hawai'i and had a great life. But, after I read this, this was not true. She had lots of a hard time to defend the Hawai'i as the last Hawaiian queen. As a
queen of Hawai'i, she needs to go to jail because of what she believes is not right to take over Hawai'i. She didn't become a hero for Hawaiian people,
but, she was inspired by many Hawaiians.
The fact that I was surprised was after she got born, she immediately moved to the house of another chief and adopted. But in Hawai'ian culture,
being adopted by royal family is to secure a higher rank for that child. If I were her, I wouldn't like to be adopted, and if I get adopted, I will hate my
parents that adopt me to another family. Because I will think why will they let me live with them and grumble to them. But, Queen Liliuokalani didn't
grumble, she just lived out how her life was. I wouldn't like to leave my parents that gave birth to me because I think it's not right to make children get
adopted by another family to secure child's high rank. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, on July 2, 1857, her adopted mom died. Because of this incident, Paki and Konia, her the United States place her more under the charge of
Mr. and Mrs. Bishops. It would be hard for Queen Liliuokalani that she had lost her adopted parents and she cannot still live with her real parents.
And she gets more on a charge from Mr. and Mrs. Bishop, it will be a rough time for her youth life. Still, she has this rough incident in her youth, has
given her life for defending her people and her lands. She has overcome from the enemy that trying to make her fall, but, she still defends her people

Julia Kapiolani Research Paper
Queen Esther Julia Kapiolani Napelakapuokakae, other known Queen Kapiolani, was born on December 31,1834 in Hilo, Hawaii, and died on June
24, 1899 in Waikiki. She was married to David Kalakaua and both of them changed Hawaii. Queen Kapiolani is one of Hawaii's greatest monarchs
because of her good morals, she created the Iolani Palace, and she created Queen Kapiolani Medical Center
One of the reasons why Queen Kapiolani was such a great queen was because of her great morals. She always helped the Hawaiian citizens by
creating chants, and staying with her roots. An example of that would be when she was living in Hawaii. Queen Kapiolani was fluent in English and
Hawaiian, but she chose to speak Hawaiian, to say true to the Hawaiians. This shows the loyalty that she has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Other than only speaking in Hawaiian, Queen Kapiolani also created memorable chants for the Hawaiians. With chants like He Mele and Mele La–na'i,
Queen Kapiolani created over 15 chants for Hawaii, most of them we use today while performing hula. This is what makes Queen Kapiolani one of
Hawaii's greatest queens because this show the amount of time effort she puts into helping Hawaii. She is not only to create chants for Hawaii, but she
also was able to build monuments like the Iolani Palace.
If creating historical chants and having good morals was not enough, Queen Kapiolani also created the only palace in the United States of America.
Before the beautiful palace that we see today, the original palace had many flaws. King David Kalakaua, Kapiolani husband, has been stressing that
the palace needs repairs to show a more "appropriate" structure for the royal residence. In 1878, King Kalakaua got his wish, as funds were received
for the remodeling to commence.

Hawaii 's First And Last Queen
Hawaii's First and Last Queen The last reigning monarch of Hawaii did everything in her power to oppose the annexation of Hawaii into the United
States without the use of violent protests. Her name was Queen Liliuokalani. She came to power in Hawaii during a time when white planters ran the
economy on the main islands. She succeeded her brother, the great Hawaiian king, King Kalakaua, who also happened to her her beloved brother. She
took a stand for many things such as the Bayonet Constitution, which weakened Hawaii's monarchy and stripped its monarchs of their power; the
Reciprocity Treaty, which forced Hawaii to trade with the United States; imprisonment in the form of house arrest for her stand against the United
States citizens... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Queen Lydia Liliuokalani worked to better the schools for youths on the islands and served as the king's regent in 1881, while he was on his world
tour (history.com). While serving as King Kalakaua's regent, or a person who is appointed to administer a nation in place of an absent or underage
ruler, an outbreak of small pox caused her to close Oahu's ports, she gained the favor of the locals by doing this; however, she agitated the wealthy
sugar cane planters on the island, they believed that she had overstepped her boundaries as the absent King's regent (Biography.com). In 1887,
Kalakaua's Queen, Kapiolani, and Princess Liliuokalani served as representatives in London at Queen Victoria's Crown Jubilee. There, not only the
queen but also United States President Grover Cleveland received them. While the ladies were in London, a group of wealthy, mainly white, business
owners held King Kalakaua at gunpoint and forced him to sign the Bayonet Constitution (history.com). This document efficiently stripped the
monarchy of its power and gave wealthy whites the most power in Hawaii. Queen Liliuokalani opposed this constitution along with the reciprocity
treaty, which granted America access to Pearl Harbor and other Hawaiian ports (Biography.com). In 1891, while on a trip to the United States which
was suggested by his doctor, King Kalakaua passed away. His sister and the rest of Hawaii learned of his death as soon as the ship

Princess Ka'iulani was a bright young member of the Hawaiian monarchy, most known for her impassioned protest against the overthrown and
annexation of Hawaii, the country she was meant to rule. The young woman toured across America, speaking to both press and public about the unjust
takeover of her kingdom by American businessmen. Although this further proved to be practically in vain, history has not forgotten the
sympathy–inducing young princess who braved a country alone for the sake of her home. Crown Princess Victoria Ka'iulani Cleghorn was born on

She may have thought that her life's purpose, all of her plans, all of her work, all of her education was now pointless. Lies were being printed about

uncivilized... unable to rule themselves. [...] It was clear that the Americans were receiving incorrect information about the Hawaii situation [...]"
Ka'iulani saw little use in speaking to the press; Liliuokalani had been ignored, and she was a queen of a nation. Not to mention the humiliating and
deceitful information being spread about her and her family across America; she doubted anyone would see the truth of her character, or her education.
However, just before she set sail for America, Ka'iulani did manage to make a statement to the English press:
"Four years ago, at the request of Mr. Thurston, then a Hawaiian Cabinet Minister, I was sent away to England to be educated privately and fitted to
the position which by the constitution of Hawaii I was to inherit. For all these years, I have patiently and in exile striven to fit myself for my return this

Queen Liliuokalani confirmed with an interviewer that she had been diagnosed with cancer on the right side of her neck for over eighteen months in
the year of 1898. She knew that the end of her life was coming closer and closer each day. From 1905–1907, the queen entered claims against the Us

permitted her to receive the income of the sugarcane plantation of six thousand acres. This was private property before her brother became king. The

Overthrow: The Annexation Of Hawaii
Overthrow: Argumentative Essay
As stated by the Ke Kukui Foundation, in 1900, only 30,000 people were of pure Hawaiian blood and over the next 45 years, the population for pure
Hawaiians will come to extinction. Even back in the early development of the Hawaiian society, one's intentions and actions shaped the further growth
for their people, government, and everyday life. Although this topic is debatable about who it really benefited, the foreigners or the Hawaiians, the
finger is turned to the side of the foreigners. The Hawaiians were strong, independent individuals, that carried themselves through hardships brought
upon them, before their intruders came to their islands. The outcome from over a hundred years that missionaries had on the ... Show more content on

Today isn't any different from what happened fifty–eight years ago. The existence of the missionaries to the Hawaiian islands has scarred their form
and principle for the wellbeing and ownership of the land. Many events that happened between the Hawaiians and the missionaries came for a price,
and some didn't have the consentive for their equality. Although, one thing is for certain, the choices made by individuals, reflects their true colors,
either good or bad. The bombing during the Boston Marathon in 2013 has no exception. Even though the alleged terrorist attack on Boston and the
Committee of Safety Board in Hawaii were from two different time periods, and were 5,027 miles apart, both of these events took away any sense of
safety for their civilians (History, Boston Marathon Bombing). As announced by History News, over 23,000 runners participated, with approximately
260 wounded, and 3 fatalities. This may not seem as such a big dilemma, but having a significant amount of impact on the majority of their population,
can permanently leave cuts in loss of security, resulting in loss of friends and family. With the corresponding new issues from President Trump, their is

Hawaii
The last state admitted into the United States so far is Hawaii. Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. The Hawaiian Islands were settled by the
Polynesians first, about 2000 years ago. Then, in 1778, James Cook stopped in the Hawaiian Islands on his way to China. This is the first time the
Westerners find out about Hawaii. After that, American ships began settling there, in the early 1800's. From there, American missionaries come to the
Hawaiian Islands, and they wanted to convert the Hawaiians to Christianity. Over time, Americans became very trusted advisors for the rulers.
Eventually, in 1840, America would help Hawaii write their first Constitution. This helps them become even closer with the Native Hawaiians. 10 years

tried to limit their power, so there were American marines sent in to protect the Americans. Queen Liliuokalani gave up her throne, when faced with

Hawaiian Monarchy Pros And Cons
The Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown by the Committee of Safety in 1893 after the McKinley Tariff Act and the Reciprocity Treaty. The Hawaiian
government lost a lot of independence and power from this by America. Businessman and sugar planters forced Queen Liliuokalani to renounce the
throne, and seized power from her while she wanted to draft a new constitution and increase Hawaiian's voting rights. People were split into different
groups, who were against annexation, which were most of the Hawaiians, and who favored annexation by the United States, such as the Hawaiian
League. The U.S. eventually agreed to annex Hawaii, while different opinions were brought up. However, the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy
had a negative impact on the Hawaiian government because of Lorrin Thurston, the Annexation Club, and because Hawaii lost their traditions and
culture. Lorrin Thurston affected Hawaii in some negative ways during the overthrow. He was a lawyer and head of the reform party who went against
the monarchy and greatly supported U.S. annexation of Hawaii. After Thurston helped create the provisional government, he went back to the United

Why Is The Destruction Of The Hawaiian Island Unjustified
The overthrow of 1893 was followed by the Reciprocity Treaty and groups of people such as the Hawaiian League, The Annexation Club, and The
Committee of Public Safety tried to take Queen Lili'uokalani off of her throne. Their plan worked and the Queen surrendered her throne to the United
States of America. In 1895, the Queen was imprisoned at 'Iolani Palace and she also wrote multiple songs in the eight months that she was there. The
overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom led to Hawaii being annexed to the United States. The overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom was unjustified
because Minister Stevens ordered American troops to go to Iolani Palace to help the Committee of Public Safety and the Committee of Public Safety's
goal was to overthrow the Queen and set up a provisional government. Firstly, one reason to further understand why the overthrow was gratuitos and
unjustified was because Minister John L. Stevens illegally brought troops in from the United States of America to go to 'Iolani Palace and help the
Committee of Public Safety. Minister Stevens worked with Sanford B. Dole as well as Lorrin A. Thurston and they worked together to take the Queen

Was The Annexation Of Hawaii Justified Essay
On July 1898, Hawaii was officially annexed to the US after a valiant struggle. The first struggle came when the Reciprocity Treaty was canceled out
by the McKinley Tariff. This negated Hawaii's advantage on sugar, leaving many foreigners yearning for annexation. Queen Liliuokalani, the last
monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, was overthrown by foreigners whose main goal was to make Hawaii a US territory. Queen Liliuokalani and her
brother, King Kalakaua, strongly opposed the annexation; however, the annexationists eventually overthrew the monarchy. When the US finally took

When the McKinley Tariff made Hawaii lose its advantage in sugar, the annexation seemed like an ideal solution to foreigners. Hawaii becoming a US
territory would resolve problems with competition, and the foreigners asserted that it was favorable to everyone. Regardless, the foreigners had forced
King Kalakaua to sign the Bayonet Constitution, which set stringent requirements for voting (Pitzer). This gave many of the wealthy foreigners the
ability to vote, while it eliminated the destitute Native Hawaiian's ability to vote. This shows that Native Hawaiians' opinion was not included in the
annexation, or in anything that the foreigners desired to do, and therefore was unjustified (Potter, Kasdon, and Rayson

Annexation Of Hawaii Essay
Annexation of Hawaii
John L. Stevens came to the island of Oahu in September 1889, acting as the U.S. Minister to Hawaii. While his mission in Hawaii was not clearly
stated, his political actions on the islands clearly showed that Stevens thought that the annexation of Hawaii was proper and inevitable.
Stevens held firm beliefs about the future of Hawaii in the hands of the United States. From the start of his stay in Hawaii, Stevens made it clear
whose side he was on in the political war. He would openly criticize Hawaii's monarchy, and at times would refer to Queen Liliuokalani and her
advisors as "incompetent"(2). Stevens may have not held anything against the Queen herself or any of her cabinet members, ... Show more content on

either before or after his departure for Hawaii regarding attempts at achieving annexation in the Hawaiian Nation." (3) Stevens had many reasons of
his own to support annexation. When he arrived in the islands, he saw many great economic and military advantages to having Hawaii annexed as
a state. He realized that Hawaii in itself was a growing industry, soon to be had as a major sugar producer in the world at the time. Plus, Hawaii
offered a huge strategic position, lying in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, which could serve as a docking point for many U.S. warships. Stevens
himself felt that he was doing good in helping an expanding America grow to even greater proportions by backing annexation in the islands.
Though the final stages of annexation in Hawaii were violent to a certain extent, Stevens would have proclaimed that since there was no heavy
military action on either side of the dispute, which the annexation of Hawaii came easily and without unnecessary action involved to obtain his goal.
He would have most likely agreed to the political schemes forced upon the monarchy by those in favor of annexation were necessary and

The last Queen of Hawaii, Queen Liliuokalani, initially named Lydia Kamakaeha had a huge impact on Hawaii. Lydia was the daughter of Caesar
Kapaakea and Analea Keohokalole. She later on became a Hanai child, a tradition in which a royal family adopts the child in order to secure a higher
rank for that child (Queen Liliuokalani, 2015). Her foster parents were Abner Paki and Laura Konia. She spent most of her time with her step–sister,
Bernice. However, she was constantly reminiscing and upset about leaving home. To get her mind off of things, she studied at a royal school; Chiefs'

the Lolani Palace, and was denied any visitors other than one lady in the waiting room. She spent her days reading, quilting, crotchet–work, as well as
composing music. Queen Liliuokalani was a skilled musician who wrote more than 160 songs and chants in her lifetime. Including "Aloha Oe",
this became the national anthem of Hawaii (Blatty). Even after her release from Lolani Palace, Queen Liliuokalani remained under house arrest
for five months at her private home, Washington Palace. A year later, The Republic of Hawaii gave her full pardon and restored her civil rights.
Two years later, in 1898, the Hawaiian Islands were officially annexed by the United States (Reilly, 2012). Queen Liliuokalani lived in the
Washington Palace until her death. She suffered a stroke and died at the age of 79. Queen Liliuokalani received a grand state funeral due to her
status as a former head of state and her remains were placed in a Royal Mausoleum (Reilly, 2012). In her will, she dictated that all her possessions and
properties be sold. The funds that they raised were donated to the Queen Liliuokalani Children's Trust. In 1993, 100 years after the overthrow, President

Annexationism In Hawaii
The Overthrow was when the United State troops illegally went on Hawaiian soil and brought 14,000 rounds of ammunition, which resulted in the
Hawaii losing control of their country. The U.S minister, Stevens was responsible for illegally surrounding the palace and for threatening to kill the
Queen and destroy the palace if not signing a contract to abdicate her from the throne. The overthrow was unjustified because the Annexationists
accused Queen Lili'uokalani of plotting against the government because she wanted to write a new constitution. The reason the Annexationists found
out was because the Queen told the cabinet her plan to change the constitution, which resulted in a leak of information. Queen Lili'uokalani was heir to
the throne due to the death of King Kalakaua. This meant that if anything happened to the King, that she would be be the next in line the throne. The
Queen had a constitution drafted, but to avoid war she waited for the right moment to announce the new constitution. When she discussed this with her

No one was positive that the Spaniards set off the bomb. However, there was a lot of suspicion in the air emitting from Americans.
The people on the boat were headed towards Cuba to regulate the interests of Americans after a revolt against Spaniards. Due to the explosion America

Americans dominated the Spaniards after three months of fighting. Next the treaty of Paris was introduced causing the war to end and allowing

Rather than being killed in war, most of the deaths on the American side occurred because of malaria, yellow fever, and typhoid.
The impact of the Maine sinking let to an infamous war. Americans were victorious causing a stronger country due to overruling the Spanish's brutal

It was not fair to the Hawaiians that they couldn't vote because the Hawaiians never got the people they wanted for a king and queen for their
kingdom. The Bayonet Constitution greatly reduced the King's power, making him just a normal person. All the power the King lost went to the
Cabinet. The privilege of voting was no longer limited to the citizens of the kingdom, but extended to foreign residents if they were American or
European. Asians were not able to vote even though they became naturalized citizens. The overthrow of the monarchy made the Hawaiians lose land.
The overthrow made the Hawaiians only get 1% of land and the missionaries and the government got the rest. Since the Hawaiians got little bit of land,
most of them didn't have food so they got really hungry, and became homeless. The Hawaiians couldn't pay for taxes so it meant they couldn't buy land.

King Liuokalani Characteristics
King Kamehameha the Great and Queen Liliuokalani were both strong and effective leaders of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Kamehameha unified the
islands while Liliuokalani tried to obtain it, without both of these leader Hawai'i would not be what it is like today. Both reigned decades apart, but
had a great impact on the Hawaiian culture, kapu system, economic system, class ranking, and other components of Hawaii's life. Kamehameha reigned
from 1810 to 1819 as the first ruler of all the Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha, a strong and determined leader was led to victory for all the Hawaiian

Hawaiian Situation Explained Analysis
On The Hawaiian Situation Explained, the document is representing how President McKinley is welcoming Liliuokalani to the overthrow. Her crown
is at the top of the throne, and swords are coming out of it. The author, The World, wrote as a caption, "It is said that Queen Liliuokalani is Really Not
Eager to Return to the Throne?". That shows that Queen Liliuokalani knows that she is going to be overthrown, and is hesitant to come back to the
throne. "Hawaii, was ruled by the monarchy, from 1795, to 1893, which was 98 years. "There are two types of monarchy: absolute monarchy and
constitutional monarchy. An absolute monarchy, is ruled by only one person, and they make all of the laws and regulations. (Ex: Kamehameha the

The democratic government, is a lot more open to any problems and challenges happening, and is probably going to notice the overthrow coming.
The democracy, is also a lot more organized, having three branches: the judiciary, executive, and legislative, each with the same amount of ruling
power. "The monarchs are the supreme judicator, legislator and executor and though they are assisted by their advisors, it will still be them who have
the final say in things. This is unlike politicians who share their power with any others and who worry about the way electors perceive them." (Pros
and Cons of Monarchy) What this quote proves, is that to overthrow a monarchy, you have to overthrow one person, who has supreme authority, and to
overthrow a democracy, you have to overthrow multiple people, each with the same amount of power, making it harder to overthrow them. The
citizens of the country, will also probably help the democratic more than the monarch. The people will like the ruler more, because they got to choose
their leader. "Critics of monarchies argue that this type of government only gives control of the whole nation under selected individuals, leaving the
people's voice, whatsoever. The public is not given the freedom to meddle with making and implementing laws. They are concerned that if the monarch
is selfish and self–gratifying, this is not good for the people and yet they cannot do anything." (10 Principal Pros and Cons of

The First Documented Contact Between Europe And Hawaii
The first documented contact between Europe and Hawaii was in 1778 by British explorer Captain James Cooke. Cooke named the islands the
Sandwich Islands in honor of his financial sponsor John Montegu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. On his second visit to the islands, Cooke and his men
got into a dispute with the natives over a stolen boat and Cooke and four shipmates were killed. The remaining sailors retreated without the boat.
Because of Cooke 's discovery, many explorers, traders, and missionaries came to the Hawaiian Islands from Europe and the United States for supplies
and it 's convenient location as a stopping point on the way to Asia. The visitors introduced many new diseases to the natives causing the island
populations to decrease by approximately fifty percent. Measles killed a fifth of Hawaii's people in the 1850's. (history.com) Between 1780 and 1795,
the Hawaiian chiefs waged battle for control of the Hawaiian Islands. In 1795, the inhabited islands were unified under King Kamehameha the Great.
He and his successors ruled the Hawaiian Islands until 1872.
America began having an interest in the Hawaiian Islands in the early 1820s. The United States held an economic foothold in Hawaii through the sugar
trade and kept European powers out of Hawaii by offering generous terms to the sugar growers. American Protestant missionaries introduced and

Queen Lili'uokalani had ambitious plans for the nation of Hawaii, and wanted to see the rightful power of the monarch restored. Even though she was
doing what she thought was best for the people of Hawaii, her dream was never meant to be. She would become known as the last queen ever to reign
over the Hawaiian Islands.
In the beginning, Hawaii was unknown to any humans. Polynesians eventually came across its islands, and decided to make it their home. In the early
days, each island was ruled by a chief, and many times the islands were in conflict with each other. Centuries like this passed, but then "in 1782, [Queen

Lili'uokalani "found the school food tasteless and the portions too small." (Guzzetti 14)
Not only did the Cookes teach the children American ways, but they also taught them Christian beliefs, making them abandon their polytheistic
religious views. Lili'uokalani also learned how to speak English at the school which became an asset to her when she was later to become queen.
She studied music as well, and down the road she became a renowned Hawaiian singer and songwriter. In the mid 1880's she published the song
"Aloha Oe" meaning "Farewell to Thee," which became one of the most famous pieces of music ever written in Hawaii. (Guzzetti 14, 15, 22, 23)
"Aloha Oe" did not give Lili'uokalani all of her fame. What did, of course, was the fact that she became a queen. The monarchy began with
Kamehameha's conquering and uniting of all the Hawaiian Islands (Guzzetti 10). After Kamehameha's death in 1819, his son, Liholiho assumed the
title Kamehameha II. During a trip to London to visit the King of England in the summer of 1824, Kamehameha II and his wife, Queen Kamamalu

looking out into the sky, and seeing the faint outline of land rising in the horizon. These are the Hawaiian Islands. As you get closer, it looks like

In analyzing the causes and effects of United States Imperialism from 1870 to 1916, one finds that there are three main factors. These major factors of
United States Imperialism in this time period are: Hawaii, the Spanish–American war, and Theodore Roosevelt. In this time period Hawaiian islanders
were very happy to live traditionally, but Americans were not content with the traditional ways of the Hawaiians (Buschini, n.pag.). Even though
America seemed to be on the road to imperialism with Hawaii, the Spanish– American war actually set the United States on the new road of Imperialism

Hawaii 's Annexation Led Cultural Differences Between The...
Hawaii's annexation prompted significant ethical differences between the points of view between the American government and the Hawaiian natives.
The American Pageant is an Advanced Placement United States History Textbook written by American authors and professors, and is thus biased
towards the American government and is thus more likely to portray the annexation of Hawaii in a good light.
In 1820, New England settlers landed on Hawaii and began their mission: spreading Protestant Christianity across the eight tropical islands. Through
time, culture assimilation, and interaction with the indigenous peoples, Americans eventually regarded Hawaii as a part of America itself. They took
the liberty of using the Hawaiian islands as a commerce hotspot and a war buffer, as demonstrated by the Spanish–American War, where America used
Hawaii as a bridge in its battles with the Philippines. American warned other countries to keep their hands off of Hawaii, for they considered it already
their own. With the approvals of the 1875 commercially–reproving treaty and the 1887 treaty with Hawaii's own native government, thus guaranteeing
the Americans jackpot: Pearl Harbor naval base rights. The textbook portrays the annexation of Hawaii in a positive light, stating that America had
saved Hawaii from its numerous economic pitfalls and had thus mutually benefitted both countries. The McKinley tariff of 1890 was the fist around
Hawaii's throat, for it barred the sale of Hawaiian

Queen Liuokalani Research Paper

  • 1. Queen Liuokalani Research Paper The first and only reigning Hawaiian queen and the last Hawaiian sovereign to govern the islands, her name is Queen Liliuokalani. In the childhood of Queen Liliuokalani, there were lot's interesting facts about her childhood to her adult life. I thought she was just a great Queen of Hawai'i and had a great life. But, after I read this, this was not true. She had lots of a hard time to defend the Hawai'i as the last Hawaiian queen. As a queen of Hawai'i, she needs to go to jail because of what she believes is not right to take over Hawai'i. She didn't become a hero for Hawaiian people, but, she was inspired by many Hawaiians. The fact that I was surprised was after she got born, she immediately moved to the house of another chief and adopted. But in Hawai'ian culture, being adopted by royal family is to secure a higher rank for that child. If I were her, I wouldn't like to be adopted, and if I get adopted, I will hate my parents that adopt me to another family. Because I will think why will they let me live with them and grumble to them. But, Queen Liliuokalani didn't grumble, she just lived out how her life was. I wouldn't like to leave my parents that gave birth to me because I think it's not right to make children get adopted by another family to secure child's high rank. ... Because of this incident, Paki and Konia, her the United States place her more under the charge of Mr. and Mrs. Bishops. It would be hard for Queen Liliuokalani that she had lost her adopted parents and she cannot still live with her real parents. And she gets more on a charge from Mr. and Mrs. Bishop, it will be a rough time for her youth life. Still, she has this rough incident in her youth, has given her life for defending her people and her lands. • 2. Julia Kapiolani Research Paper Queen Esther Julia Kapiolani Napelakapuokakae, other known Queen Kapiolani, was born on December 31,1834 in Hilo, Hawaii, and died on June 24, 1899 in Waikiki. She was married to David Kalakaua and both of them changed Hawaii. Queen Kapiolani is one of Hawaii's greatest monarchs because of her good morals, she created the Iolani Palace, and she created Queen Kapiolani Medical Center One of the reasons why Queen Kapiolani was such a great queen was because of her great morals. She always helped the Hawaiian citizens by creating chants, and staying with her roots. An example of that would be when she was living in Hawaii. Queen Kapiolani was fluent in English and Hawaiian, but she chose to speak Hawaiian, to say true to the Hawaiians. This shows the loyalty that she has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other than only speaking in Hawaiian, Queen Kapiolani also created memorable chants for the Hawaiians. With chants like He Mele and Mele La–na'i, Queen Kapiolani created over 15 chants for Hawaii, most of them we use today while performing hula. This is what makes Queen Kapiolani one of Hawaii's greatest queens because this show the amount of time effort she puts into helping Hawaii. She is not only to create chants for Hawaii, but she also was able to build monuments like the Iolani Palace. If creating historical chants and having good morals was not enough, Queen Kapiolani also created the only palace in the United States of America. Before the beautiful palace that we see today, the original palace had many flaws. King David Kalakaua, Kapiolani husband, has been stressing that the palace needs repairs to show a more "appropriate" structure for the royal residence. In 1878, King Kalakaua got his wish, as funds were received for the remodeling to commence. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Hawaii 's First And Last Queen Hawaii's First and Last Queen The last reigning monarch of Hawaii did everything in her power to oppose the annexation of Hawaii into the United States without the use of violent protests. Her name was Queen Liliuokalani. She came to power in Hawaii during a time when white planters ran the economy on the main islands. She succeeded her brother, the great Hawaiian king, King Kalakaua, who also happened to her her beloved brother. She took a stand for many things such as the Bayonet Constitution, which weakened Hawaii's monarchy and stripped its monarchs of their power; the Reciprocity Treaty, which forced Hawaii to trade with the United States; imprisonment in the form of house arrest for her stand against the United States citizens... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Queen Lydia Liliuokalani worked to better the schools for youths on the islands and served as the king's regent in 1881, while he was on his world tour (history.com). While serving as King Kalakaua's regent, or a person who is appointed to administer a nation in place of an absent or underage ruler, an outbreak of small pox caused her to close Oahu's ports, she gained the favor of the locals by doing this; however, she agitated the wealthy sugar cane planters on the island, they believed that she had overstepped her boundaries as the absent King's regent (Biography.com). In 1887, Kalakaua's Queen, Kapiolani, and Princess Liliuokalani served as representatives in London at Queen Victoria's Crown Jubilee. There, not only the queen but also United States President Grover Cleveland received them. While the ladies were in London, a group of wealthy, mainly white, business owners held King Kalakaua at gunpoint and forced him to sign the Bayonet Constitution (history.com). This document efficiently stripped the monarchy of its power and gave wealthy whites the most power in Hawaii. Queen Liliuokalani opposed this constitution along with the reciprocity treaty, which granted America access to Pearl Harbor and other Hawaiian ports (Biography.com). In 1891, while on a trip to the United States which was suggested by his doctor, King Kalakaua passed away. His sister and the rest of Hawaii learned of his death as soon as the ship ... • 4. The Life and Times of Victoria Ka'iulani, Member of... Princess Ka'iulani was a bright young member of the Hawaiian monarchy, most known for her impassioned protest against the overthrown and annexation of Hawaii, the country she was meant to rule. The young woman toured across America, speaking to both press and public about the unjust takeover of her kingdom by American businessmen. Although this further proved to be practically in vain, history has not forgotten the sympathy–inducing young princess who braved a country alone for the sake of her home. Crown Princess Victoria Ka'iulani Cleghorn was born on October 16, 1875 to Princess Miriam Likelike and Scottish businessman Archibald Scott Cleghorn as the highest born ali'i (noble) of her generation and was, at the time, fourth in line for... Lies were being printed about the Hawaiian people and who they were. These articles were printed in newspapers across the United States. Hawaiians were being called barbarians... uncivilized... unable to rule themselves. [...] It was clear that the Americans were receiving incorrect information about the Hawaii situation [...]" Ka'iulani saw little use in speaking to the press; Liliuokalani had been ignored, and she was a queen of a nation. Not to mention the humiliating and deceitful information being spread about her and her family across America; she doubted anyone would see the truth of her character, or her education. However, just before she set sail for America, Ka'iulani did manage to make a statement to the English press: "Four years ago, at the request of Mr. Thurston, then a Hawaiian Cabinet Minister, I was sent away to England to be educated privately and fitted to the position which by the constitution of Hawaii I was to inherit. For all these years, I have patiently and in exile striven to fit myself for my return this year to my native country. She grew up near Waikiki Beach at Ainahau, meaning the cool place. As a child she enjoyed reading, painting, and horseback riding. Her mother later died in 1887 from an unexplained illness. In 1889 Ka'iulani, along with her half–sister Annie, was sent to England to expand her education. Her father arrived in England in the summer of 1896. He joined her on her European tours where they were received by high society. Ka'iulani's health started to fail with her migraines worsening, colds, and fainting plagued her. In 1897 she received word that her half–sister Annie had died in Hawaii at the age of 29. Ka'iulani became very depressed after all her losses. That same year Ka'iulani and her father moved back to Hawaii, but after almost a decade in Europe the heat and humidity had become too much for her and her health became even worse. Ka'iulani did manage to make public appearances and had some hope that the monarchy would be restored. However, on August 12, 1898, Hawaii was officially annexed to the United States. Overthrow: The Annexation Of Hawaii Overthrow: Argumentative Essay As stated by the Ke Kukui Foundation, in 1900, only 30,000 people were of pure Hawaiian blood and over the next 45 years, the population for pure Hawaiians will come to extinction. Even back in the early development of the Hawaiian society, one's intentions and actions shaped the further growth for their people, government, and everyday life. Although this topic is debatable about who it really benefited, the foreigners or the Hawaiians, the finger is turned to the side of the foreigners. The Hawaiians were strong, independent individuals, that carried themselves through hardships brought upon them, before their intruders came to their islands. The outcome from over a hundred years that missionaries had on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Today isn't any different from what happened fifty–eight years ago. The existence of the missionaries to the Hawaiian islands has scarred their form and principle for the wellbeing and ownership of the land. Many events that happened between the Hawaiians and the missionaries came for a price, and some didn't have the consentive for their equality. Although, one thing is for certain, the choices made by individuals, reflects their true colors, either good or bad. The bombing during the Boston Marathon in 2013 has no exception. Even though the alleged terrorist attack on Boston and the Committee of Safety Board in Hawaii were from two different time periods, and were 5,027 miles apart, both of these events took away any sense of safety for their civilians (History, Boston Marathon Bombing). As announced by History News, over 23,000 runners participated, with approximately 260 wounded, and 3 fatalities. This may not seem as such a big dilemma, but having a significant amount of impact on the majority of their population, can permanently leave cuts in loss of security, resulting in loss of friends and family. Then, in 1778, James Cook stopped in the Hawaiian Islands on his way to China. This is the first time the Westerners find out about Hawaii. After that, American ships began settling there, in the early 1800's. From there, American missionaries come to the Hawaiian Islands, and they wanted to convert the Hawaiians to Christianity. Over time, Americans became very trusted advisors for the rulers. Eventually, in 1840, America would help Hawaii write their first Constitution. Later on, in 1891, King David Kalakaua dies, and his sister, Liliuokalani becomes Queen. However, she only stayed queen for 2 years. This was because, unlike her brother, she had the courage to reject the new Constitution the Americans forced upon them. The Americans didn't like that she tried to limit their power, so there were American marines sent in to protect the Americans. Queen Liliuokalani gave up her throne, when faced with guns, to avoid any more bloodshed. So, Queen Liliuokalani only got 2 years to serve as Queen. Then, in 1898, Hawaii is annexed by President McKinley. Some people had been wanting to annex Hawaii sooner, but President Grover Cleveland did not allow it. 2 years after this, Hawaii finally becomes an American territory. The Hawaiian government lost a lot of independence and power from this by America. Businessman and sugar planters forced Queen Liliuokalani to renounce the throne, and seized power from her while she wanted to draft a new constitution and increase Hawaiian's voting rights. People were split into different groups, who were against annexation, which were most of the Hawaiians, and who favored annexation by the United States, such as the Hawaiian League. The U.S. eventually agreed to annex Hawaii, while different opinions were brought up. Their plan worked and the Queen surrendered her throne to the United States of America. In 1895, the Queen was imprisoned at 'Iolani Palace and she also wrote multiple songs in the eight months that she was there. While his mission in Hawaii was not clearly stated, his political actions on the islands clearly showed that Stevens thought that the annexation of Hawaii was proper and inevitable. Stevens held firm beliefs about the future of Hawaii in the hands of the United States. From the start of his stay in Hawaii, Stevens made it clear whose side he was on in the political war. (3) Stevens had many reasons of his own to support annexation. When he arrived in the islands, he saw many great economic and military advantages to having Hawaii annexed as a state. He realized that Hawaii in itself was a growing industry, soon to be had as a major sugar producer in the world at the time. Plus, Hawaii offered a huge strategic position, lying in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, which could serve as a docking point for many U.S. warships. Stevens himself felt that he was doing good in helping an expanding America grow to even greater proportions by backing annexation in the islands. Though the final stages of annexation in Hawaii were violent to a certain extent, Stevens would have proclaimed that since there was no heavy military action on either side of the dispute, which the annexation of Hawaii came easily and without unnecessary action involved to obtain his goal. In this note, Queen Emma does not encourage the rioters to continue, and instead she encourages them to wait to try to change the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hawaii's annexation prompted significant ethical differences between the points of view between the American government and the Hawaiian natives. The American Pageant is an Advanced Placement United States History Textbook written by American authors and professors, and is thus biased towards the American government and is thus more likely to portray the annexation of Hawaii in a good light. In 1820, New England settlers landed on Hawaii and began their mission: spreading Protestant Christianity across the eight tropical islands. Through time, culture assimilation, and interaction with the indigenous peoples, Americans eventually regarded Hawaii as a part of America itself. They took the liberty of using the Hawaiian islands as a commerce hotspot and a war buffer, as demonstrated by the Spanish–American War, where America used Hawaii as a bridge in its battles with the Philippines. American warned other countries to keep their hands off of Hawaii, for they considered it already their own. With the approvals of the 1875 commercially–reproving treaty and the 1887 treaty with Hawaii's own native government, thus guaranteeing the Americans jackpot: Pearl Harbor naval base rights. The textbook portrays the annexation of Hawaii in a positive light, stating that America had saved Hawaii from its numerous economic pitfalls and had thus mutually benefitted both countries. The McKinley tariff of 1890 was the fist around Hawaii's throat, for it barred the sale of Hawaiian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
