How Is Personification Used In A Fable
Samuel Langhorne (1835–1910) also known as Mark Twain wrote many novels and short stories
(The Gale Group). Many of his writings have become well known in the world. Mark Twain once
wrote a story called "A Fable." In the story animals are portrayed with human qualities. The cat,
which is the main character, tells all the other animals to go see a picture that is beautiful. The
picture is a painting that was put in front of a mirror, but the cat describes it as a hole in the wall.
When all the animals go to see the painting they all see a different picture. All the animals then get
upset because everyone sees a different picture. In order to make the story Mark Twain uses several
language techniques: personification, dialogue, and imagery. ... Show more content on

The writer uses this figure of speech by adding details to a sentence in order to make the writing
more vivid or to show importance. One example is in paragraph three where the cat states how flat
the picture is. In order to amplify how flat the painting is the author uses several adjectives. Instead
of staying it was really flat the author states, "Wonderfully flat, marvelously flat, enchantingly flat"
(Twain). Whenever someone is to read that sentence they can picture in their minds how flat the
painting is. Another example is in paragraph nine when the cat was describing how the picture
looks. The author states, "So dainty and charming ad ethereal" (Twain). As I was reading this
paragraph I could picture in my head exactly how beautiful the picture was. When describing how
beautiful the painting was the writer used adjectives to enhance how nice it looked. One other
example is that throughout the whole story there is only one female. They only animal that is a
female is the cow. This is a great example on how Mark Twain used imagery in the story because by
using the cow as a female he is implying that women are weak. The author makes good use of
adjectives and giving us the readers a clear

How Does Huck Finn Criticize Civilized Society
The Two Faced Nature of Society In the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain
implements the use of satire to criticize "civilized" society and highlight the flaws that plagued its
victims. Huck Finn, the perceived vulgar misfit of society proves to be the smartest as he on his
lonesome comprehends that "Human beings can be awful" (Twain 174). He epitomizes Mark
Twain's satire because although Huck is uncivilized, he realizes the faults of society. Thus, Twain
mocks the "civilized" society as the supposed proper people are catalysts for the violence and
disorder of the time period.
Huckleberry Finn is first introduced as a young innocent boy who is unhappy with his current living
conditions. He finds it "rough living in the house all the time" (Twain 1) with the Widow Douglas
and her sister Miss Watson as they strive to civilize Huck. He is a" poor lost lamb" to them, in need
of an intervention (Twain 1).Through the sisters, Twain implements satire to exemplify the
hypocrisy of aristocrats. Although, Miss Watson gives off the illusion that she is self–righteous; that
is all a façade as it becomes ever apparent that she too is filled with flaws. Huck is clever enough to
see this as he states "They get down on a thing when they don't know nothing about it" (Twain 2).
Huck realizes that they are hypocrites. Furthermore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just as Widow Douglas believed she had the ability to civilize Huck, the new judge believed he
could cure Pap of his vice. Although Pap is well–known as the drunkard, no one strives to
understand to seriousness of his situation. The new judge simply believed that if he "dressed him up
clean and nice, and had him...with the family" that he would suddenly agoing to turn over a new
leaf" (Twain 16). Twain ridicules the new judge as he thinks Pap can be saved without any rigorous
treatment for alcohol abuse: revealing another flaw of "civilized"

Literary Techniques Of Mark Twain
Mark twain was an aspiring author during the late 19th century. He wrote many story's that created a
variety of emotions between the people who read them from his broad irreverent humor, biting
social satire to his up forth hatred of hypocrisy and oppression. During this literary time period
twain wrote about realism, relating to what was going on and what he witnessed around him or
writing how something actually is instead of covering it up, which was one of his best qualities
causing a lot of people to ban and dislike his work. Two of Twain's best works that really speak for
how he wrote that will be discussed are "The Adventures of Tom sawyer" and "The Adventures of

The Adventure of Tom Sawyer was one of Twains most loved writings and little Tom was one of his
most beloved characters. Based by the Mississippi river, young Tom and his friends constantly get in
trouble testing the whole town's patience. This story is very fun to read for its humorous tone that
Twain was so natural at producing in his works. Some literary techniques Twains uses are irony and
satire which gives his stories real character and personality. Some examples of his satire are "T'aint
thunder...."They done that last summer"...."Somebody's drowned" these examples show all the
characteristic's is satire which make the book so much more in character as he is criticizing how
Tom and his friends speak and pointing out their lack in education, it helps readers understand the
time period and lifestyle of the characters. As mentioned earlier, Twain was very big on humor and
making his story's fun and interesting. Here is an example of a humorous irony "But Tom Sawyer
haunted me up and said he was going to start a band of robbers, I might join if I would go back to
the widow and be respectable" this is irony with a little humor because robbers aren't respectable

Mark Twain's Poem: The War Prayer
During the period between the civil war's end, and about 1914, an American literary movement
occurred. This movement is known as realism for its adherence to real life, but should not be
confused with naturalism. Mark Twain played a part as one of the Literary minds of this era. In his
Poem "the War Prayer", Twain shows examples of realism about the townspeople, non–believers,
and the negative parts of the war.
In the beginning of the poem, Twain mentions all the townspeople gathering at the church. There are
volunteers, young people, glorified people and everyone is enthusiastic. He describes an organ that
lets out a sound that shakes the whole church. Following the sound, in unison, the entire
congregation rises. He says, "the house rose, with glowing eyes and beating hearts, and poured out
that tremendous invocation". He is showing realism here by the descriptions about the emotions that
are genuinely being experience by the townsfolk in this era.
Shortly after describing the hearts of the townspeople, he goes on to talk about some "rash spirits".
These spirits are described as people who would openly speak out against the war and its injustices.
These People were treated roughly, and threatened in such a way that they feared for their well–
being. Twain writes, "for their personal safety's sake they quickly shrank out of sight". In a time ...

He gives many examples of the unspoken words of all the victory prayers. Twain writes, "O Lord
our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to wring the hearts of
their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children
to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst." The realism
here comes from how terrible the aftermath of war really is. People die, wives lose husbands,

At the age of 17 Twain left the printer's job behind to become a pilot's apprentice which is where the

Here the young Twain experienced the excitement of the colorful steamboats that docked at the town
wharf, bringing comedians, singers, gamblers, swindlers, slave dealers, and assorted other river
travelers. Twain also gained his first experience in a print shop in Hannibal. He used this experience
when he went to work for a newspaper and printing firm in 1847 after his father died in debt. This is
where Twain gained much of his knowledge since he had little formal schooling. In 1853, Twain left
Hannibal, displaying the yearning for travel that he would experience throughout his life. He stayed
briefly in cities such as St. Louis, New York, Philadelphia and Cincinnati, working for low wages in
print shops. He then traveled to Keokuk, Iowa, to assist his brother with more printing business.
In 1857, Twain made plans to travel to South America, and in April of that year, he started down the
Mississippi River toward New Orleans. It was on this trip that Twain made a decision with
important consequences for his life and career. He met a pilot named Horace Bixby who revived
Twain's boyhood dream of learning the river. So, instead of traveling to South America, Twain
persuaded the riverboat pilot to teach him the skills of piloting. By April 1859, Twain had become a
licensed riverboat pilot and he continued with this job until secession of the South from the Union
closed the river. Mark Twain served briefly in the Marion Rangers, a militia company which

Mark Twain: A Man Beyond Color
For skilled labor workers in the mid–1800's, jobs were plentiful; however, most required an
apprenticeship to hone their skills to perfection as a way to secure a job (Armstrong, 2015).
Specifically, Samuel Clemens' mother decided, upon the death of her husband in 1847, Samuel was
to begin an apprenticeship with Joseph Ament, owner of the Missouri Courier (Dempsey, 2003). Just
before the death of Clemens' father, because of financial distress, his mother took a job as cook for a
local man (The Mark Twain House & Museum, 2015). Clemens' empathetic nature for black

Slaves and Twain's Life
As a very young and frail child, Twain had a nursemaid named Jennie, who at some point received a
beating from Clemons' father, and she was later sold at auction for what she had done (Dempsey,
2003). Later in his early childhood, Twain picked up several dialects from the slaves, using them as
a tool to become a successful writer (Dempsey, 2003). This almost intrinsic talent became evident
later in his career as a writer, illustrating and demonstrating the moral obligations and different
views of slaves and masters, and the racial tensions between the two (Smith, 2014).
Twain grew up with a young slave boy named Sandy. Taken from his parents, Sandy worked as a
young slave after being transported to Missouri. All alone, Sandy would sing to keep the memories
of his parents at bay, allowing him to cope with his unfortunate situation (Burns, Duncan, & Ward,
2015). Twain, being but a child, was consistently annoyed with the singing and so his mother would
remind him of the Sandy's delicate past (Dempsey, 2003). Twain's mother showed great compassion
for the slave boy and later these inherent compassionate views of slavery became more liberal and

1884, secret slavery is still going on. In this book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark
Twain was a prime example of how most children were raised to be and how it produced a wrong
perception on slaves. Mark Twain wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn because of a direct
effect off of his personal experiences in his time. Any difference in another human shouldn't
determine greeting or befriending another person was the message Mark Twain was trying to send
was due to the struggles he seen a slave go through which was put into the book. The development
of Huck, Jim, Tom Sawyer, and slavery, affected the development of the book and theme.
Huck was not only a representation of Mark, but of America too. The Characterization of Huck, Jim,
and Tom was a first hand connection on how Mark felt about befriending slavery. As a literature
expert and philosopher the author Laurence Mazzeno says "Huckleberry Finn is the sober self–
restraint with which Mr. Clemens lets Huck Finn set down." which tells the reader that Huckleberry
Finn was similar to Mark Twain himself, and how he put pieces of himself in that character. I
paraphrased another one of his quotes that explains how Mark felt about how how society portrays
slaves by the author Mazzeno saying, :"although Jim has been portrayed as ignorant throughout the
novel, he is a morally decent man who temporarily puts aside his dreams of freedom to nurse Tom

It is called "Those Annual Bills". The poem has a AABB/CCAA/DDAA rhyme scheme. This adds
some interest to the poem because there is a refrain of rhyme scheme. "AA" is contained in every
stanza. This allows for the repetition of "annual bills" to take place in every stanza as there is an
"AA" rhyme scheme to contain it. The repetition of "annual bills" adds meaning to the poem by
repeating the main focus of the poem and making it sound bad. The poem starts with a first stanza
consisting of statements of what the annual bills have done. It talks about bills as a discord, and gets
readers to think bills are frustrating. There is the personification, "...skinned by last year's lot!" This
emphasizes that annual bills are bad and disappointing. The second stanza repeats the fact that the
bills are frustrating. It makes bills sound like they take away important parts about life. The third
and final stanza focuses on the people that are affected by the bills. It states that the people that
collect the bills are duns, and that other poets will also write poems about their dislikes of bills. The

How Does Mark Twain Use Satire In Huckleberry Finn
The Satiric Adventure Through Mark Twain's South Satire is the use of comedy, exaggeration and
ridicule to criticize people for what they do, what they create, or who they are. Mark Twain uses
extensive satire in his novel to depict what he thought the ideology of the South was during this
time. Twain denounces many staples of Southern life, during the time period of the book. Racism,
religion, and family feuds were substances able to be found anywhere in the South. Twain chooses
to excoriate these things because his opinions on these topics vary vastly from what the common
mentality was in the South. Perhaps one of Mark Twain's most satirized topics in The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn is racism. In his novel one of the most racist characters is Huck's father Pap. Pap
gets frustrated when a black person is more educated than him or has nicer clothes. "Call this a
govment!...there was a free nigger there"(Twain 36). This quote tells the reader that Pap thinks part

The specific feud in the novel is between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons. These two
families have been fighting so long that the current generation do not even know why they are

"Him? He never done nothing to me." "Well, then, what did you want to kill him for?" "Why,
nothing––only it's on account of the feud" (Twain 118). There are two things Twain could have been
trying to portray. The Hatfields and Mccoys had a feud in the South for several years which directly
mirrors the book. The feud could also represent the bigger Civil War that has just ended in Twain's
time of writing the novel. The senseless violence and extremely high death toll, the Civil War was a
silly war in Mark Twain's eyes as by the end not one side really won. It just abolished the thing that
should have ended decades

Essay about Advice to Youth and Mark Twain
Mark Twain, known at the time to be a humorous author, wrote a speech on 'Advice to Youth.' Twain
gives several pieces of advice all with a twist of honesty attached. The way this speech was written
suggest that it would have been delivered at a graduation ceremony. Perhaps Twain was asked to
speak at a college graduation ceremony and was going to deliver this speech. It is the perfect speech
to relate to youth. Twain's advice begins with "always obey your parents..." (Norton, 550) which is
sound advice. The rule of obeying one's parents comes right from the Ten Commandments. Obeying
one's parents is a rule that is as old as time, engraved in everyday teachings. Twain twists this idea

Twain is relating to the target audience. Twain is getting into the shoes of a youth in their era. This is
one way to get the youth to listen and respond in a positive way. Twain writes every sentence
positively then ends sarcastically. "If a person offends you ... hit him with a brick" (Norton, 550).
This line is hilarious. Twain is telling young adults it is ok to act out aggressively, just wait for the
appropriate time and place. Also, if it is the wrong person you act out against just apologize and
everything will be fine. The lark is commonly used as a symbol in a variety of ways. Twain uses the
lark in the part about going to bed early and waking up early. Waking up with the sun is the normal
time to rise for the year this was written. Depending on the time of year the sun usually rises at
about seven in the morning. Twain says to wake up with a lark is respectable but "you can easily
train him to get up at half past nine" (Norton, 550). Meaning on average this would give you an
extra two and a half hours to sleep in. This is evidence showing that Twain is writing to teens or
college students because they are usually the ones who like to sleep the day away. Mark Twain's
advice on lying is do not get caught. Twain says "once caught, you can never again be, in the eyes of
the good and the pure" (Norton, 550) Meaning once a person lies, that person is a liar. Branded like

Although the newspaper was unprofitable, and deemed a failure by most, Orion and Samuel saw
themselves as a success. They soon changed the name to the Journal and now had the largest
circulation of any newspaper in the region. It was filled with works both original and copied from
other sources. This was acceptable in a society without copyrights. When the Journal gained
success, Orion refused to print some of Samuel's works. He, however took his writing elsewhere. He

Mark Twain Dream Dissipated Summary
Famous satirical author in the Gilded age, Mark Twain, in his "Dreams Dissipated", argues the Great
Earthquake in San Francisco in 1865 had revealed the true animal–like behavior of the elite and
other people with a following. Twain's purpose is to unveil the true nature of the elite and influential
public figures to show they are not superior than the general public, in order for his audience not to
seek guidance from the elite and view them as people with flaws. Twain adopts a mocking tone for
his audience who may blindly follow the elite and other groups, as well to an audience who may be
unaware of the 'true' effect it had on the people of San Francisco. Twain supports this claim by first

Instead of simply stating that large sums of people were fleeing from their homes, Twain gives the
houses human–like features by stating it is vomiting people. By doing so, it helps readers have a
more vivified image of the events and gain a better apprehension. The fact that the houses were
"vomiting" as the earthquake was occurring, helps create an insight for the readers that a lot of
people were attempting to escape their homes with the best of their abilities as their houses collapse.
Crowds were exiting their homes all at once to save themselves and their families, making seem as
if the house were gagging. Furthermore, Twain applied hyperbole in his writing while describing
women who had "raided" their husbands' purses to force them to buy the latest fashion because they
wanted to mimic the elite women, meanwhile the husbands "suffered" as they watched. Twain had
exaggerated the scene, by portraying the wives who had attacked their husbands, but when in fact,
they did not. In reality, women were urging their husbands to purchase certain items, not physically
attacking the husbands in the process. Whereas the husbands, were not necessarily suffering at all,
except they may have been restless due to the fact that they were waiting for their wives. Through
the use of personification and hyperbole, Twain describes the earthquake

For instance, when Tom shows off for Becky return, she scoffs, "Some people think they're mighty
smart–always showing off!" (80). Tom's heart bursts with happiness because Becky is back and
wonders if she feels the same. However, after attempting to win her heart back, she breaks and
rejects Tom. This is the final straw to both people and they have a major fall out. Mark Twain
utilizes colloquialism to show that Becky is a heartless girl when talking to Tom. Furthermore, when
Becky tries to win Tom over, she shows off to get his attention but only succeeds in losing him even
more, and the author states, "... Hid herself and had what her sex called '"a good cry"' (117). Becky
cares for Tom again when he comes back. Mark Twain utilizes colloquialism to show that Becky
loves Tom and is not mean to him anymore. Lastly, when Becky and Tom meet up, they decide to
run away to Widow Douglas's house to have fun, and Becky states, "I reckon it's wrong–but" (169).
Becky has her doubts about Tom's judgment. However, since she loves him and will trust him she
goes through with the plan and they have a lot of fun. Mark Twain utilizes colloquialism to show
that Becky is not a fully matured lady and is respectful to Tom Sawyer's judgments. Hence, Becky
changes from being a mean lover to a compassionate

Huckleberry Finn Satire Essay
"I heard an owl, away off, who–whooing about somebody that was dead, and a whippo–will and a
dog crying about somebody that was going to die; and the wind was trying to whisper something to
me, and I couldn't make out what it was" (Twain 13). Twain often ridicules American society in the
early 1800's. He pokes fun at various subjects throughout the novel, such as human brutality,
women's roles in society, and slavery within christianity. Satire plays a major role in Mark Twain's
classic novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
As the novel begins, Huck is living with a woman, Miss Watson,a religious christian figure. Upon
further research, it became clear that religion played a dominant role on views of slavery. Many

The slight change in the playbill took the women's failure, by being involved in the show, to a

by the duke when he stated, "if that line don't fetch them , I don't know Arkansaw" (Twain 161).

Mark Twain would write facing a wall so he would not get distracted by the stuff around him. Mark
Twain was a very social person who loved to be around people, and he used his personal
experiences when writing his books. Twain also allows his emotions at the time dictate his writing,
for example when his daughter died his writings became very negative and dark.
First and foremost Mark Twain was a very emotional writer. Twain arguably wrote his best pieces
during the earlier part of his career, because he enjoyed writing and he was in a good place. After

Mark Twain Mark Twain was a world renowned novelist and a beloved American Writer. He wrote
things about what was happening in the world around him and is also a huge part of American
Literature. Although Mark Twain is a famous novelist his home life, background/achievements, and
greatest accomplishments are what made him who he is today. Mark Twain was more than the man
we all know. For one thing, he was born as Samuel Langhorn Clemens on November thirtieth

Twain and Olivia, just like any happily married couple, also had children of their own. That is, little
Langdon was their first child, born prematurely and with brittle bones, only lived nineteen months
and second daughter Olivia Susan (Susy) even living up to age twenty–four had unfortunately "died
from spinal meningitis" (News, 1). Twain always had problems with his middle daughter Clara, who
overtime became distant to her family, and his youngest daughter, who he had the most struggles
with, suffered from epilepsy (nearly trying to kill the maid during her attacks) and died at the age of
twenty–nine from a heart attack. Some things that happened in Twain's home life marked as either
turning points or became the center for some of his works. Mark Twain, unlike any other famous
novelist/writer, has his very own accomplishments. The two of his greatest accomplishments is what
everyone knows him famous for. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of

Humorous Uses of Hypocrisy in Mark Twain's Novels
In Mark Twain' diary, he quotes: "I am not an American, I am the American" (Mark Twain's
notebook 1) in his notebook from his friend. His literature sense definitely proved he is the
American, and his humor is unique with irony in American society. In his novels, The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, hypocrisy is reflected well by Twain's humor.
Mark Twain claims in his letter to a friend about The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: "It is not a boy's
book, at all. It will only be read by adults. It is only written for adults" (1). Mark Twain's The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a novel about youths, but it reviews great truths and philosophy of the
society. The book is too profound for children to understand the moral. The author uses the view of a
child to express the humor of the implication of youth's behavior, the religious irony, and the
hypocritical society.
As the whole story is told by the voice of a teenager, many teenagers' behaviors are also expressed
in Mark Twain's language of humor. For example, Tom is a naughty boy and hardly ever listens to
his Aunt Polly, and there comes the punishment: Tom has to whitewash the fence. The playful boy
will never work while others are enjoying the beautiful sunny afternoon; therefore, he draws the
innocent kids into whitewash for him by pretending it is joyful. His ingenious language is described
in the following quote: "Tom employs language as a means to

Twain lived in many different places in his life time, thus his works had roots in many different
areas of American Culture. From a silver prospector to a printing press worker, he held many
different jobs in these locations. He is also regarded as one of the greatest humorists of American
Literature. In fact, his works were considered to have no place in literature by many experts until the
1910's. He is regarded as one of the greatest American authors of all time. And of course, from being
such a prestigious writer, he has and award named after him, and it is to be given to the best
humorist of the year. Mark Twain was born November 30th, 1835 in Florida, Missouri when Haley's
Comet was in sight (Aller 13). He was born two months premature, but his superstitious mother
believed that it was a good omen that Haley's Comet was in sight (Koster 42). Four years later his
family moved to Hannibal, Missouri to grow hogs and farmed wheat, tobacco, and marijuana

Mark Twain : The Father Of American Literature
What makes an author great? How does an Author achieve legendary status amongst peers? One
hundred years after his death on April 21, 1910, "Mark Twain remains as central as ever not only in
American literature but American life," writes James M. Cox, a leading Twain scholar (Greenblatt).
As an example in 1996, a set of twenty–nine books containing his work was published with
introductions by famous authors at the beginning of each volume. Each of the introductions
references how Mark Twain directly influenced the authors of each story, poem, essay or letter.
William Faulkner once said Mark Twain is "the father of American literature ... the first truly
American writer, and all of us since are his heirs. (Huso) Twain was renowned for his work with
humor and sarcasm, but he was a great deal more as a public moralist, famous entertainer, political
philosopher, travel writer, and novelist. Twain created an American point of view in literature,
bringing in aspects of real and current topics in the world; writing about the civil war, the war in the
Philippines against Spain through an anti–imperialist view and breaching topics such as slavery and
posing moral dilemmas between characters.
Mark Twain was one of the best–known storytellers of his time even though he had only received an
education until the fifth grade due to the untimely death of his father forcing him into the working
world. The icon has penned over 35 published pieces of work between 1864 and his

Is Mark Twain Racist?
Alveda King once stated, "Racism springs from the lie that certain human beings are less than fully
human." Mark Twain supports this belief when he composed his novel, The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn. In the aftermath of the American Civil War, the institution of slavery and
American Southern culture was not well understood internationally. The Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn conveys Southern culture and the social attitudes toward slavery through the plot of a young
white runaway boy named Huckleberry Finn helping a runaway slave named Jim escape to free
territory by traveling down the Mississippi River on a raft. Ever since the novel's publication, debate
amongst critics has ensued over whether Mark Twain displays his own racist tendencies in his
literary work. Twain's use of his Huckleberry Finn and Jim in the plot along with use of social satire
prove that he is not racist.
Twain fashions Jim as an admirable character who readers can relate to, which is a clear indication
that Twain did not conform to racist standards of his time. Throughout the novel, Jim displays high
moral character and gratitude toward Huckleberry through speech and actions. He sees Huck as "de
on'y white gentleman dat ever kep' his promise" (Twain 74) to him. He credits Huck for providing
him with freedom. Also, Jim gives such a heartfelt, emotional speech to Huck about how he regrets

In the novel towards the middle Huck and Jim are trying to head to free states anh Huck hits an
internal conflict. "Jim said it made him all over trembly and feverish to be so close to freedom. Well
i can tell you it made me all over trembly and feverish too, to hear him because I begun to get it
through my head that he was most free–and who was to blame for it. Why Me?" (Twain, 93). Huck
is having an internal conflict on whether a not to turn in Jim and have them send him back to Widow

friendship based on what society deems wrong it is irrational. Also during this time period Huck lies
to Jim about the whole fog situation which is also irrational because Huck is lying to one of his only
friends. The next example is in the beginning of the novel when Huck and Jim first get on the water
Hucks thinks, "Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty
free and easy and comfortable on a raft" (Twain, 90). Huck and Jim are acting irrationally because

Mark Twain Influences
Mark Twain was born with the name Samuel Clemens. Being shaped by the society in which he
lived, Twain developed a style of writing that would make him one of the most well known authors
in American Literature. Mark Twain lived during a time of overwhelming social, political, and
economic change. He developed a disdain for the rich elitist of his time and the injustice of the
recently freed slaves. These factors shaped the life and works of Mark Twain and had a profound
effect on the style of writing that would become his own. Thus, his depictions of peoples' actions,
emotions, and environment helped create a humorist of the Realism Movement in literature.

In 1853, Samuel's environment changed when he became a riverboat's pilot's apprentice. Not only
did he change his environment, but he changed his name to Mark Twain. Mark twain was the words
used to mean it was safe to navigate (Herrera 2012). Twain used the events from his experiences as a
riverboat pilot to embellish his writings. While traveling the Mississippi River,
Twain visited New Orleans. This environment caused Twain to move beyond the narrow–
mindedness of the Missouri slave culture. His work as a riverboat pilot awakened his interest and
empathy for others different from himself. These travels highlighted his feelings that the world was
a vast and complex place populated with ethnic groups with different versions of the truth
(Bush 45). Twain's days as a riverboat pilot ended with the beginning of the Civil War. Once again
his environment changed. Twain joined the Confederate Army but deserted after a brief period. He
wrote about day by day concerns including abuse (Lombardi 2016). We can witness this as Huck

The Pursuit For World Domination
In the early 20th century, world domination was a realistic notion advocated by American leaders,
specifically, then–Governor and future President, Theodore Roosevelt. Many outspoken political
commentators opposed this notion and believed world domination was excessive and unnecessary
and was not in America's best interest. One of these political commentators was none other than the
revered Mark Twain, who, in his 1901 satirical piece, "To the Person Sitting in Darkness", attempts
to expose the downsides of American expansionism. Twain accomplishes this by satirically
describing the pursuit for world domination as a "game" between coercive countries and

By using imagery and symbolism, Mark Twain attempts to demonize American foreign policy by
portraying it as dishonest and opportunistic. Twain uses the term "Christendom" to describe America
and other players of the "game" whose objective is to conquer foreign nations. Twain uses the term
"Those Sitting in Darkness" to describe the nations "Christendom" is attempting to conquer. It is
readily apparent that Twain is implying that the nations who house "person's sitting in darkness"
have not seen the light of "Christendom", which means they are non–Christian nations. To drive
home this point Twain gives the example of China, a prominently secular nation, stating it houses
countrymen who are "sitting in darkness" (Twain 3). Twain explains that in order to to gain access to
these countrymen and conquer their land, America must appeal to their trust by showing them the
"Blessings of Civilization". This is a form of religious imagery as Twain is implying that
"Christendom" is blessed by a higher power and have an appealing set of morals and virtues that
they can offer unblessed nations.
However, Twain suggests in numerous occasions that these "Blessings of Civilization" are merely a
guise to help gain the trust of "those sitting in darkness" in order to better conquer them. After
describing the "Blessings of Civilization" Twain mockingly states, "There. Is it good? Sir, it is pie. It

How Did Mark Twain Influence His Work
To begin with, Samuel Langhorne Clemons or Mark Twain is known to be one of the greatest and
most influential artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Not only is he intelligent
and influential, he is very humorist. Mark Twain's work was mostly influenced by his childhood.
Mark Twain was born as Samuel Langhorne Clemens on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri in
a small cabin which is now preserved and is a historic site in Missouri. He is the son of John
Marshall Clemons and Jane Lampton Clemens and is 1 of 7 children. In 1839, he and his family
moved to Hannibal, Missouri. Mr. John Marshall Clemens worked extremely hard as a Tennessee
country merchant to provide for his family until his passing in 1846 from pneumonia forcing the
family into financial hardship. Mark twain's tragic lost caused him to quit school and become a
printer's apprentice from 1846–1851 with Hannibal Journal in order to take the major role his father
had which was taking care of the family. Mark Twain was greatly inspired by this and is even more
inspired by his Hannibal days which were his childhood. Mark Twain was quite an intelligent
person, although he knew he couldn't finish school because of the responsibilities he had to take, he
later learned that he could be self–educated. Mark Twain learned to educate himself through life

What Is John Steinbeck Unique Style
By reading a classic, the reader will come away with a lesson that they have learned, and they will
begin questioning themselves. Authors who write classics have to have unique styles to their writing
to connect to the world, so that the reader can understand the message the book is telling them.
Three famous authors who write classics, that you may know are O.Henry, Mark Twain, and John
Steinbeck. O.Henry, Mark Twain, and John Steinbeck all write with their own unique styles in their
writing that connect to the reader's life experiences. O. Henry's unique style is shown in his work. A
style O. Henry writes with is situational irony. Situational irony is when actions have an outcome
that is opposite of what was intended. In the short story, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two of his unique styles were to put social and racial inequalities in the book. For example, in
chapter 1, Kino's child got bitten by a scorpion. They went to the doctor, which they normally never
do, because the doctor was their only hope. (CD–CX) When they arrived at the doctor's house, the
butler told the doctor about the people. Thinking about their race, the doctor said, "Have I nothing
better to do than cure insect bites for little Indians? I am a doctor not a veterinary. Has he any
money" (11)? (SPP) This passage shows how the doctor doesn't want to help, because they don't
have money. He also did not want to help because they were Indians. This is important because it
shows John Steinbeck's writing style. John Steinbeck likes to make the character go through racial
and social inequality situations. Ultimately, the reader learns that the characters are unlucky because
of their race and lack of money. Another one of John Steinbeck's unique style is used in The Pearl.
John Steinbeck likes to use symbolism in his writing. For example, in Chapter 5, Kino's house was
on fire. Because Kino did not know who burned the house down, he asked Juana. Juana said, "The
dark ones" (33). This passage is important because dark represents evil, the end, death, and
hopelessness. The pearl, which is white, represents a new beginning. The house was burned down,
so someone evil had to do that. (CD) That is why the dark ones represent evil people. This is
important because it shows John Steinbeck is using symbolism on "the dark ones." (CX) Ultimately,
the reader learns that John Steinbeck uses symbolism in his writings. To wrap up, John Steinbeck is

history, and has brought many good stories to people all over the country.
A sense of humor, a very useful thing in life, is something that Mark Twain definitely had. In the

had lots of humor in it. It would be hard to write a book with humor in it if you didn't have a sense

publishing house who published his book was brought out of debt by the sales of his fantastic book.
That is very impressive considering that debts can get very big, especially for a big company like
that. Just the sales of his book alone to be the thing that brings them out of debt must mean that it
was the most superb of books.
Lastly, Mark Twain was Honest and forgiving. Mark Twain forgave the aforementioned publisher
who would not publish his book. This shows that Twain understands that people make mistakes and
that they need to be forgiven. He is also Honest. When he accidentally plagiarized that poem, he

Almost a half–century later he wrote in Following the Equator: "all that goes to make me in me was
in a Missourian village, on the other side of the globe" (21). After leaving Hannibal, Twain traveled
about America as a printer, setting type in composing rooms in St. Louis, New York, Philadelphia,
Cincinnati, Keokuk and Muscantine, Iowa (22). Twain's letters to his family during this period, his
correspondence to the Muscatine Journal, and the Snodgrass letter reveal his social and political
thinking at this stage (22). As in Hannibal, his work as a printer kept him in touch with the literature
that went into the newspapers as "fillers" (22). On April 15, 1857, the Paul Jones, piloted by Horace
Bixby, set off for New Orleans from Cincinnati (23). On board was a young Mark Twain. From the
gulf port he planned to sail for the Amazon to make a fortune in cocoa (23). But when he walked up
the gang plank, he was headed not for South America but for a new career –– the profession of
piloting (23). This is the beginning of Twain's life on the muddy Mississippi River and many
experiences that would be put into text. On April 9, 1859, he was granted his pilot's license, and
became a co–pilot with the veteran where it all began Horace Bixby (23). The influence of the
greatest of American rivers permeates every phase of Mark Twain's development (23). As Twain
observed himself he wrote: "I got personally and familiarly acquainted with about all

How Is Personification Used In A Fable

  • 1. How Is Personification Used In A Fable Samuel Langhorne (1835–1910) also known as Mark Twain wrote many novels and short stories (The Gale Group). Many of his writings have become well known in the world. Mark Twain once wrote a story called "A Fable." In the story animals are portrayed with human qualities. The cat, which is the main character, tells all the other animals to go see a picture that is beautiful. The picture is a painting that was put in front of a mirror, but the cat describes it as a hole in the wall. When all the animals go to see the painting they all see a different picture. All the animals then get upset because everyone sees a different picture. In order to make the story Mark Twain uses several language techniques: personification, dialogue, and imagery. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The writer uses this figure of speech by adding details to a sentence in order to make the writing more vivid or to show importance. One example is in paragraph three where the cat states how flat the picture is. In order to amplify how flat the painting is the author uses several adjectives. Instead of staying it was really flat the author states, "Wonderfully flat, marvelously flat, enchantingly flat" (Twain). Whenever someone is to read that sentence they can picture in their minds how flat the painting is. Another example is in paragraph nine when the cat was describing how the picture looks. The author states, "So dainty and charming ad ethereal" (Twain). As I was reading this paragraph I could picture in my head exactly how beautiful the picture was. When describing how beautiful the painting was the writer used adjectives to enhance how nice it looked. One other example is that throughout the whole story there is only one female. They only animal that is a female is the cow. This is a great example on how Mark Twain used imagery in the story because by using the cow as a female he is implying that women are weak. The author makes good use of adjectives and giving us the readers a clear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. How Does Huck Finn Criticize Civilized Society The Two Faced Nature of Society In the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain implements the use of satire to criticize "civilized" society and highlight the flaws that plagued its victims. Huck Finn, the perceived vulgar misfit of society proves to be the smartest as he on his lonesome comprehends that "Human beings can be awful" (Twain 174). He epitomizes Mark Twain's satire because although Huck is uncivilized, he realizes the faults of society. Thus, Twain mocks the "civilized" society as the supposed proper people are catalysts for the violence and disorder of the time period. Huckleberry Finn is first introduced as a young innocent boy who is unhappy with his current living conditions. He finds it "rough living in the house all the time" (Twain 1) with the Widow Douglas and her sister Miss Watson as they strive to civilize Huck. He is a" poor lost lamb" to them, in need of an intervention (Twain 1).Through the sisters, Twain implements satire to exemplify the hypocrisy of aristocrats. Although, Miss Watson gives off the illusion that she is self–righteous; that is all a façade as it becomes ever apparent that she too is filled with flaws. Huck is clever enough to see this as he states "They get down on a thing when they don't know nothing about it" (Twain 2). Huck realizes that they are hypocrites. Furthermore, ... • 9. Mark Twain's Poem: The War Prayer During the period between the civil war's end, and about 1914, an American literary movement occurred. This movement is known as realism for its adherence to real life, but should not be confused with naturalism. Mark Twain played a part as one of the Literary minds of this era. In his Poem "the War Prayer", Twain shows examples of realism about the townspeople, non–believers, and the negative parts of the war. In the beginning of the poem, Twain mentions all the townspeople gathering at the church. There are volunteers, young people, glorified people and everyone is enthusiastic. He describes an organ that lets out a sound that shakes the whole church. Following the sound, in unison, the entire congregation rises. He says, "the house rose, with glowing eyes and beating hearts, and poured out that tremendous invocation". He is showing realism here by the descriptions about the emotions that are genuinely being experience by the townsfolk in this era. Shortly after describing the hearts of the townspeople, he goes on to talk about some "rash spirits". These spirits are described as people who would openly speak out against the war and its injustices. These People were treated roughly, and threatened in such a way that they feared for their well– being. Twain writes, "for their personal safety's sake they quickly shrank out of sight". Twain also gained his first experience in a print shop in Hannibal. He used this experience when he went to work for a newspaper and printing firm in 1847 after his father died in debt. This is where Twain gained much of his knowledge since he had little formal schooling. In 1853, Twain left Hannibal, displaying the yearning for travel that he would experience throughout his life. He stayed briefly in cities such as St. Louis, New York, Philadelphia and Cincinnati, working for low wages in print shops. He then traveled to Keokuk, Iowa, to assist his brother with more printing business. In 1857, Twain made plans to travel to South America, and in April of that year, he started down the Mississippi River toward New Orleans. It was on this trip that Twain made a decision with important consequences for his life and career. He met a pilot named Horace Bixby who revived Twain's boyhood dream of learning the river. Specifically, Samuel Clemens' mother decided, upon the death of her husband in 1847, Samuel was to begin an apprenticeship with Joseph Ament, owner of the Missouri Courier (Dempsey, 2003). Just before the death of Clemens' father, because of financial distress, his mother took a job as cook for a local man (The Mark Twain House & Museum, 2015). Slaves and Twain's Life As a very young and frail child, Twain had a nursemaid named Jennie, who at some point received a beating from Clemons' father, and she was later sold at auction for what she had done (Dempsey, 2003). Later in his early childhood, Twain picked up several dialects from the slaves, using them as a tool to become a successful writer (Dempsey, 2003). This almost intrinsic talent became evident later in his career as a writer, illustrating and demonstrating the moral obligations and different views of slaves and masters, and the racial tensions between the two (Smith, 2014). Twain grew up with a young slave boy named Sandy. Taken from his parents, Sandy worked as a young slave after being transported to Missouri. All alone, Sandy would sing to keep the memories of his parents at bay, allowing him to cope with his unfortunate situation (Burns, Duncan, & Ward, 2015). Twain, being but a child, was consistently annoyed with the singing and so his mother would remind him of the Sandy's delicate past (Dempsey, 2003). • 23. The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain Dreyson Clark Bouchey 2nd Period English 1 Honors 03/02/2016 1884, secret slavery is still going on. In this book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain was a prime example of how most children were raised to be and how it produced a wrong perception on slaves. Mark Twain wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn because of a direct effect off of his personal experiences in his time. Any difference in another human shouldn't determine greeting or befriending another person was the message Mark Twain was trying to send was due to the struggles he seen a slave go through which was put into the book. The development of Huck, Jim, Tom Sawyer, and slavery, affected the development of the book and theme. Huck was not only a representation of Mark, but of America too. The Characterization of Huck, Jim, and Tom was a first hand connection on how Mark felt about befriending slavery. As a literature expert and philosopher the author Laurence Mazzeno says "Huckleberry Finn is the sober self– restraint with which Mr. Clemens lets Huck Finn set down." which tells the reader that Huckleberry Finn was similar to Mark Twain himself, and how he put pieces of himself in that character. I paraphrased another one of his quotes that explains how Mark felt about how how society portrays slaves by the author Mazzeno saying, :"although Jim has been portrayed as ignorant throughout the novel, he is a morally decent man who temporarily puts aside his dreams of freedom to nurse Tom back to ... The repetition of "annual bills" adds meaning to the poem by repeating the main focus of the poem and making it sound bad. The poem starts with a first stanza consisting of statements of what the annual bills have done. It talks about bills as a discord, and gets readers to think bills are frustrating. There is the personification, "...skinned by last year's lot!" This emphasizes that annual bills are bad and disappointing. The second stanza repeats the fact that the bills are frustrating. It makes bills sound like they take away important parts about life. The third and final stanza focuses on the people that are affected by the bills. How Does Mark Twain Use Satire In Huckleberry Finn The Satiric Adventure Through Mark Twain's South Satire is the use of comedy, exaggeration and ridicule to criticize people for what they do, what they create, or who they are. Mark Twain uses extensive satire in his novel to depict what he thought the ideology of the South was during this time. Twain denounces many staples of Southern life, during the time period of the book. Racism, religion, and family feuds were substances able to be found anywhere in the South. Twain chooses to excoriate these things because his opinions on these topics vary vastly from what the common mentality was in the South. Perhaps one of Mark Twain's most satirized topics in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is racism. In his novel one of the most racist characters is Huck's father Pap. Pap gets frustrated when a black person is more educated than him or has nicer clothes. "Call this a govment!...there was a free nigger there"(Twain 36). There are two things Twain could have been trying to portray. The Hatfields and Mccoys had a feud in the South for several years which directly mirrors the book. The feud could also represent the bigger Civil War that has just ended in Twain's time of writing the novel. Twain gives several pieces of advice all with a twist of honesty attached. The way this speech was written suggest that it would have been delivered at a graduation ceremony. Perhaps Twain was asked to speak at a college graduation ceremony and was going to deliver this speech. It is the perfect speech to relate to youth. Twain's advice begins with "always obey your parents..." (Norton, 550) which is sound advice. The rule of obeying one's parents comes right from the Ten Commandments. Obeying one's parents is a rule that is as old as time, engraved in everyday teachings. Twain twists this idea and adds "... when they are present" (Norton, 550) saying ... Also, if it is the wrong person you act out against just apologize and everything will be fine. The lark is commonly used as a symbol in a variety of ways. Twain uses the lark in the part about going to bed early and waking up early. Waking up with the sun is the normal time to rise for the year this was written. Depending on the time of year the sun usually rises at about seven in the morning. Twain says to wake up with a lark is respectable but "you can easily train him to get up at half past nine" (Norton, 550). Meaning on average this would give you an extra two and a half hours to sleep in. This is evidence showing that Twain is writing to teens or college students because they are usually the ones who like to sleep the day away. Mark Twain's advice on lying is do not get caught. They began work on the Hannibal Western Union where Orion printed all of Samuel's essays and articles. Although the newspaper was unprofitable, and deemed a failure by most, Orion and Samuel saw themselves as a success. They soon changed the name to the Journal and now had the largest circulation of any newspaper in the region. It was filled with works both original and copied from other sources. This was acceptable in a society without copyrights. When the Journal gained success, Orion refused to print some of Samuel's works. He, however took his writing elsewhere. He wrote for the Carpet–Bag and the Philadelphia American Courier, berating his old town and the Hannibal natives. He signed each work with the initials "S.L.C." Orion left town for awhile and gave the duty of editor to Samuel. He quickly took advantage of Orion's absence. Humorous Uses of Hypocrisy in Mark Twain's Novels In Mark Twain' diary, he quotes: "I am not an American, I am the American" (Mark Twain's notebook 1) in his notebook from his friend. His literature sense definitely proved he is the American, and his humor is unique with irony in American society. In his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, hypocrisy is reflected well by Twain's humor. Mark Twain claims in his letter to a friend about The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: "It is not a boy's book, at all. It will only be read by adults. It is only written for adults" (1). Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a novel about youths, but it reviews great truths and philosophy of the society. The book is too profound for children to understand the moral. The author uses the view of a child to express the humor of the implication of youth's behavior, the religious irony, and the hypocritical society. As the whole story is told by the voice of a teenager, many teenagers' behaviors are also expressed in Mark Twain's language of humor. For example, Tom is a naughty boy and hardly ever listens to his Aunt Polly, and there comes the punishment: Tom has to whitewash the fence. One hundred years after his death on April 21, 1910, "Mark Twain remains as central as ever not only in American literature but American life," writes James M. Cox, a leading Twain scholar (Greenblatt). As an example in 1996, a set of twenty–nine books containing his work was published with introductions by famous authors at the beginning of each volume. Each of the introductions references how Mark Twain directly influenced the authors of each story, poem, essay or letter. • 57. Mark Twain 's The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn William Doolan Mrs. Shaw English 2 Honors/Pd. 8 5 June 2015 Is Mark Twain Racist? Alveda King once stated, "Racism springs from the lie that certain human beings are less than fully human." Mark Twain supports this belief when he composed his novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In the aftermath of the American Civil War, the institution of slavery and American Southern culture was not well understood internationally. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn conveys Southern culture and the social attitudes toward slavery through the plot of a young white runaway boy named Huckleberry Finn helping a runaway slave named Jim escape to free territory by traveling down the Mississippi River on a raft. Ever since the novel's publication, debate amongst critics has ensued over whether Mark Twain displays his own racist tendencies in his literary work. Twain's use of his Huckleberry Finn and Jim in the plot along with use of social satire prove that he is not racist. Twain fashions Jim as an admirable character who readers can relate to, which is a clear indication that Twain did not conform to racist standards of his time. Throughout the novel, Jim displays high moral character and gratitude toward Huckleberry through speech and actions. He sees Huck as "de on'y white gentleman dat ever kep' his promise" (Twain 74) to him. He credits Huck for providing him with freedom. Also, Jim gives such a heartfelt, emotional speech to Huck about how he regrets hitting his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Huckleberry Finn Research Paper Many times the question "Should Mark Twain have added in the last ten chapters inHuckleberry Finn" has been asked. Why did he include those? It just makes the book longer, right? Well, yes and no. The last ten or so chapters add some necessary details. It does makethe book longer and it does drag it out, but the last chapters kind of "sum it up" as well. Howshould these last chapters affect the book in such a positive and negative way? Well, let's seehow this works. The positives to the last ten chapters is very obvious when the last chapter or two hasbeen read. A detail that couldn't have been summed up in chapter thirty, was the fact that TomSawyer told Jim he was free after he had gone through all of those complications to get "freed"."Turn him loose! ... "He ain't a comin' back no mo', Huck...Doan' you 'member de house datwas float'n down de river, en dey wuz a man in dah, kivered up...dat wuz him." (Twain 292) Mr.Twain could have included that detail, but it would have felt like he was trying to cram everythinginto a couple chapters just so he could finish the book. In my opinion, I think that Mr. Twainshould have included the last chapters because it would have been to crammed of a finish tomake a good, interesting book. • 61. Freedom In Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn "The fraction of households owning slaves fell from 36 percent in 1830 to 25 percent in 1860" (Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History). Even with the decrease of slavery in America during this time period, all people of all races wanted to be free. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is about a young boy, Huckleberry Finn, and one of his best friend Jim, who is a slave, and they go wild adventures on raft on the Mississippi. In Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Freedom influences people to do things that are illogical, out of character and irrational because of the instinctual human desire to be free. In the novel towards the middle Huck and Jim are trying to head to free states anh Huck hits an internal conflict. "Jim said it made him all over trembly and feverish to be so close to freedom. Well i can tell you it made me all over trembly and feverish too, to hear him because I begun to get it through my head that he was most free–and who was to blame for it. Why Me?" (Twain, 93). Huck is having an internal conflict on whether a not to turn in Jim and have them send him back to Widow Douglas. Which shows how irrational Huck is he is willing to give up one of the only good friendship based on what society deems wrong it is irrational. Also during this time period Huck lies to Jim about the whole fog situation which is also irrational because Huck is lying to one of his only friends. The next example is in the beginning of the novel when Huck and Jim first get on the water Hucks thinks, "Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft" (Twain, 90). Huck and Jim are acting irrationally because they wanna be free. Huck and Jim left safety and security to live there live on a boat on a river in foreign land. They would rather live there life with uncertainty then to live there life confined either by loved ones or by society's morals. So in closing people act irrationally because they a humans want ... His work as a riverboat pilot awakened his interest and empathy for others different from himself. These travels highlighted his feelings that the world was a vast and complex place populated with ethnic groups with different versions of the truth (Bush 45). • 67. The Pursuit For World Domination In the early 20th century, world domination was a realistic notion advocated by American leaders, specifically, then–Governor and future President, Theodore Roosevelt. Many outspoken political commentators opposed this notion and believed world domination was excessive and unnecessary and was not in America's best interest. One of these political commentators was none other than the revered Mark Twain, who, in his 1901 satirical piece, "To the Person Sitting in Darkness", attempts to expose the downsides of American expansionism. Twain accomplishes this by satirically describing the pursuit for world domination as a "game" between coercive countries and highlighting the deceptive nature of these countries to win the "game". Also through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By using imagery and symbolism, Mark Twain attempts to demonize American foreign policy by portraying it as dishonest and opportunistic. Twain uses the term "Christendom" to describe America and other players of the "game" whose objective is to conquer foreign nations. Twain uses the term "Those Sitting in Darkness" to describe the nations "Christendom" is attempting to conquer. It is readily apparent that Twain is implying that the nations who house "person's sitting in darkness" have not seen the light of "Christendom", which means they are non–Christian nations. To drive home this point Twain gives the example of China, a prominently secular nation, stating it houses countrymen who are "sitting in darkness" (Twain 3). Twain explains that in order to to gain access to these countrymen and conquer their land, America must appeal to their trust by showing them the "Blessings of Civilization". This is a form of religious imagery as Twain is implying that "Christendom" is blessed by a higher power and have an appealing set of morals and virtues that they can offer unblessed nations. However, Twain suggests in numerous occasions that these "Blessings of Civilization" are merely a guise to help gain the trust of "those sitting in darkness" in order to better conquer them. After describing the "Blessings of Civilization" Twain mockingly states, "There. Is it good? Sir, it is pie. It will bring into camp any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. What Is John Steinbeck Unique Style By reading a classic, the reader will come away with a lesson that they have learned, and they will begin questioning themselves. Authors who write classics have to have unique styles to their writing to connect to the world, so that the reader can understand the message the book is telling them. Three famous authors who write classics, that you may know are O.Henry, Mark Twain, and John Steinbeck. O.Henry, Mark Twain, and John Steinbeck all write with their own unique styles in their writing that connect to the reader's life experiences. O. Henry's unique style is shown in his work. A style O. Henry writes with is situational irony. Situational irony is when actions have an outcome that is opposite of what was intended. In the short story, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Two of his unique styles were to put social and racial inequalities in the book. For example, in chapter 1, Kino's child got bitten by a scorpion. They went to the doctor, which they normally never do, because the doctor was their only hope. (CD–CX) When they arrived at the doctor's house, the butler told the doctor about the people. Thinking about their race, the doctor said, "Have I nothing better to do than cure insect bites for little Indians? I am a doctor not a veterinary. Has he any money" (11)? (SPP) This passage shows how the doctor doesn't want to help, because they don't have money. He also did not want to help because they were Indians. This is important because it shows John Steinbeck's writing style. John Steinbeck likes to make the character go through racial and social inequality situations. Ultimately, the reader learns that the characters are unlucky because of their race and lack of money. Another one of John Steinbeck's unique style is used in The Pearl. John Steinbeck likes to use symbolism in his writing. For example, in Chapter 5, Kino's house was on fire. Because Kino did not know who burned the house down, he asked Juana. Juana said, "The dark ones" (33). This passage is important because dark represents evil, the end, death, and hopelessness. The pearl, which is white, represents a new beginning. The house was burned down, so someone evil had to do that. (CD) That is why the dark ones represent evil people. This is important because it shows John Steinbeck is using symbolism on "the dark ones." (CX) Ultimately, the reader learns that John Steinbeck uses symbolism in his writings. Twain's letters to his family during this period, his correspondence to the Muscatine Journal, and the Snodgrass letter reveal his social and political thinking at this stage (22). As in Hannibal, his work as a printer kept him in touch with the literature that went into the newspapers as "fillers" (22). On April 15, 1857, the Paul Jones, piloted by Horace Bixby, set off for New Orleans from Cincinnati (23). On board was a young Mark Twain.
