Arranged Marriage Research Paper
In the next 10 years, more than 100 million girls are going to be married before the age of 18. In
most cases, girls already are married off to older men when they are still children. There are so
many reasons as to why the United States has already banned child–arranged marriages. Today, 20
countries around the world still allow child arranged marriages. The points I will be discussing
today are; what child arranged marriages are, the emotional and mental effects it has on women, and
lastly how the girl's health is at serious risk. The past couple of days I have researched this topic to
give me credibility, and I have come up with some valid points as to why I believe arranged
marriages are wrong and should be banned globally.

There are many complicated reasons they claim as to why these countries still perform arranged
marriages and at some points, I can see where they are coming from. However, the things that
people do not talk about and the things that people do not really see that is what I am talking about
here. So maybe it is a lot to ask that child arranged marriages be ban, but at least raising awareness
to expose the truth behind it. Works Cited bureau, The idea. Girls not brides . 2002. 17 march 2017 .

Essay On Arranged Marriage
In the year of 2016, 26,250,000 arranged marriages occurred annually worldwide. In another
perspective, 52.25% of marriages were arranged as of 2016 ("Arranged/Forced"). Arrange marriage
has many customs and traditions, and requirements for the future bride or groom.Refusal to this type
of marriage can cause many problems on sides of the family and child. These requirements and
consequences of refusal can be shown in the short story "Marriage is a Private Affair" by Chinua
Achebe.
Arranged marriages are highly common but yet many people do not know the customs and
traditions of arranged marriage. In arranged marriages, parents choose their son or daughter's future
spouse with only a little input from the soon to be newly–weds. If either the son or daughter refuses
the choice, the parents tend to respect their wishes and will find someone else ("Traditional").
Sometimes, in other cultures it varies and the consequences of refusal to arrange marriage are: "...the
consequences for both men and women were they would be considered a burden to their family and
if the parents went to extreme measures then the child could be disowned, beaten, or even be given
the death penalty" ("Consequences"). Additionally, in arranging the girl and boy have to be of the
same religion, have a good social status, and have the same culture/traditions. Anyone that does not
follow these requirements is seen as an unfit match. Advantages of arranged marriage are they
shorten the time of dating, let

Humans, regardless of their location in the world have many aspects of their lives that are similar to
one another. From daily life to traditions humans share a lot of attributes with one another in which
they do not realize. One of the greatest parts of life would be finding a person out in the world that
you are privileged to spend the rest of your life with. An equal half to you, someone who bares all
the grueling and breath taking moments that life has planned. The practice of marriage has been
around since the earliest civilizations. To this day still continues just as strong. However the
possibility of finding the potential other person to spend the rest of your life can find you or can be
found through an outside connection. As a result of modern social constructs and the methodology
of traditional arranged marriages, they do not possess the marital requirements essential to succeed
in the western culture.
An arranged marriage can be defined as the union of two individuals to be married, brought together
by a third party individual outside of the relationship. Throughout the course of history, arranged
marriages have had a substantial role in shaping it, originally dating back centuries before and were
considered a common practice around the majority of cultures. Marriage, for example in Hinduism
is considered a coming together of two souls, and the longevity of it can extend into their next lives.
In addition, it is also seen as a dharma meaning a mandatory

Stereotypes Of Arranged Marriages
Arranged marriages are traditional in Africa, South–east Asia, The Middle East and Latin America.
Due to migration the practice has been extended today to western world countries. Many families
choose their daughters' husbands according to wealth, so converting the woman into a tradable

Arranged marriage is a marital union where a third party matches the bride and the groom; arranged
marriages were common globally until the 18th century. In modern times, arranged marriages are
common in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. In more developed countries,
arranged marriages are still common in royal families, various parts of Japan, and in minority ethnic
groups.

The Movie Arranged Marriage
Some people follow arranged marriages through religious beliefs. Each era of their family tree has
passed this down to one another in hopes to continue culture. This marriage started in India and later
expanded into different countries like Japan, Islam, etc. In the movie "Arranged" it shows the
perspective of a different culture. There are two women name Rochel and Nasira. One woman is
Jewish the other Muslims and finds out plenty of similarities they share. Both families were strict on
rules and worried about other people opinions on their family names. They were two diverse
families, but different religion and culture went through the same arranged marriage process. I also
learned more about the clothing that is worn by Muslim, and this is important in their culture.
Women wear a scarf that is called "hijab." In the U.S culture, it is not recommended to wear
anything on your head, but you have the option to follow any religion. According to "American
Culture: Traditions and Custom of the United States" Zimmermann states "Nearly every known
religion is practiced in the United States, which was founded by religious freedom." I was raised
upon the Christian religion, and the differences between Rochel and me from the movie is not
getting matched up with someone for marriage or wearing clothing due to belief. Another thing I
learned is the henna tattoo dye these women put on their hands and feet, and each pattern is
meaningful to their culture, and the U.S culture doesn't

The Marriage Of Arranged Marriage
For Better or for Worse My parents had a choice to marry for love, but, unfortunately, their parents
did not. Imagine the world where family members or close friends chose your spouse based on their
expectations. Should this be the way to go about marriage, or does this hinder a person's ability to
live for themselves? In India alone, around 90% of marriages are arranged by their families (CNN).
They would choose who ever they believe would best fit the person, but not necessarily love them
(Queano). Although arranged marriage is a custom in many countries, is it the right thing to do?
People deserve the right to choose for themselves whom they will marry. Marriage is about love and
finding the right person that makes you the happiest, rather than someone who's just there for your
benefit. According to Asia–Pacific Economic Blog:
An arranged marriage is one where the families have pre–decided on a spouse for the child. The two
people getting married often do not know each other, and have no choice in the matter. It is a highly
traditional practice in many Indian and Asian cultures, and has been practiced for centuries. The
debate on this issue is difficult because the views differ greatly depending on your culture.

Arranged Marriage Sociology
When comparing many sociological perspectives and theories against the idea of arranged marriages
in India there are many conclusions that can be drawn. In specific, feminism, functionalism, and the
conflict theory all point out very interesting facts. Some of these theories do a much better job in
terms of accounting for this phenomena; which is not surprising as we looks at the long and detailed
history of the subject. However, there is no sole theory that can truly be linked to account for the
total occurrence of such a subject. As you will see, there are many factors that come into play when
an arranged marriage takes place. Not only are the couple being married affected, but the families of
both the man and the woman are traditionally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theory is focused on the inequalities of different groups in a society, and on the level of power
associated to these groups (Mooney, 2000). In the case of arranged marriages in India, there can be
said to be many groups that both contribute and are created with unequal power through the process.
To begin with, the parents potentially hold the future of their child in their hands as they are the ones
who choose the significant other (Sandhya, 2013). In the interest of wealth, power and security,
most families choose a person with a significant amount of higher status in the society because
through the marriage, ties between the families strengthen and so do both of their overall prestige
(Sandhya, 2013). It can be said that families marry into one another, and this creates economic
inequalities as these groups are formed. This idea of marriage being a family affair all starts with
people who hold more power than others, the parents versus the child, and end by creating an even
larger group that differs from many other others in that country (Sandhya, 2013). Overall, I believe
that the conflict theory can be said to best describe the idea of arranged marriages because of the
nature that encompasses the

Did you know, in some cultures such as India, Korea, and Orthodox Jews allow arranged marriages?
Arranged marriage is when two families agree to marry their kids, usually without the child's
consent. In the article "Arranged Marriage" by Sanjay Kali, it talks about the positive and negative
things about arranged marriages. I strongly believe that arranged marriages are a negative idea since
the majority of arranged marriages never end well. In arranged marriages there are many negative
things. Such as making the decision to marry someone who you have only met, and is a complete
stranger to you. Another negative thing is not knowing much about the person, such as what their
dislikes and likes are. Sanjay Kali said "There is no work involved

Arranged Marriage:
In the broadest sense, marriages have been divided into two general categories; arranged marriages
and love marriages. As the name implies, an arranged marriage is defined as a marriage where the
bride and groom are exclusively selected by a third party (usually their parents), while in a love
marriage, people choose their marital partners based on their feelings or attraction for one another.
In America and Western Europe, marriages based on love, have dominated their cultures for a long
time and, as a result, when it comes to arranged marriages, most American's first reaction would be:
"Oh! This kind of marriage is so relentless and incredible, because we have no voice." However,
times are changing, and so is the attitude toward marriage. America is a "melting pot," which means
it is a multicultural society, and there are so many immigrants from other countries in America. Due
to international migration, both arranged marriages and love marriages have co–existed in peace and
affected each other. Although some argue that arranged couples don't have a choice in choosing their
life partner, we can't deny the benefits of arranged marriages, as it can help them obtain full and
complete support from their families, better understand each other and provide a high possibility for
a successful and happy marriage.
First of all, an arranged marriage can help the bride and the groom gain the acceptance and support

Divorce rates in America have reached a high of 40 to 50 percent. Arranged marriages in today's era,
even in America, is based on the foundation of wanting to find someone to love and have given up
on finding someone themselves, or have let their parents set up an arrangement with another person
to possibly marry. The difference with older traditions and modern arranged marriages is the
purpose. Modern arranged marriages are set up on the foundation of finding the perfect match but
the the pair can decide if they actually want to get married or not, however, older traditions did not
allow the rejection of a spouse. A muslim couple in America had an arranged marriage, they didn't
want an arranged marriage at first but, they let their parents intervene and arrange a set up because
that was traditional of their culture.

Marriage
Marriage is a union between a man and woman. Selecting a husband and wife is one of the most
important decisions of a person's life because a marriage can bring either a happy or unhappy life.
Choosing the best partner is one of the keys to get a happy marriage. For some people they may
choose to get married with the person whom they love, which is love marriage. Actually, there are
two kinds of marriage that are love marriage and arranged marriage. Arranged marriage is when the
parents or family will choose the partner of their child or relatives. Arranged marriages occur in
around the world especially in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. In many cultures believe that
marriage is not always love. Those people claim that the couple who are getting married still young
and have less experience. In this sense, some cultures believe that the best choice of the child's
partner is made by his or her parents. However, it is still controversial among people that choosing
arranged marriage is the same with forced marriage. In this sense, the couple do not have a freedom
of choice to choose their own partner. They have to follow their parents decision to get married with
the person. In some countries, people do not agree with arranged marriages, especially for the
Western people. They believe that every person has their own choice to choose their partner in a
marriage. Adults seem always think that love before marriage

Arranged Marriage Vs Love Marriage
The debate amongst love marriage and arranged marriage will never stop. That is not the goal.
Everyone goes about marriage a different way. Having the choice between an arranged marriage and
a love marriage is helpful for many people. There are many more advantages to an arranged
marriage than a love marriage. In the past, arranged marriages were the most popular, but modern
times have shifted the view to more love marriages despite the disadvantages accompanying it.
Family is so important. An arranged marriage is accepted by the bride and groom as they believe
their elders are able to make the best decision when it comes to who the marry. An arranged
marriage focuses on family union. This establishes trust amongst family members and automatically
the new addition to the family has immense approval, something a love marriage may not have. For
example, say a woman goes out and marries a man. She shows him to the family and they
disapprove of him. They say he is not right for her. This upsets the daughter and the husband, and
creates a family divide. This creates a situation where the woman must choose between two things
she loves. This could all be avoided by arranged marriage. Arranged marriages presuppose that two
people are perfectly matched because they belong to the same culture, share the same religious
upbringing, speak the same language, and raised in more or less the same socio–economic class.
These identical backgrounds make it easier for the couple to communicate with each other and
understand where each is coming from. Decisions in the upbringing of future children and their
education leave little room for disparities in their thinking because of this likeness. The preapproval
of the spouse solves a plethora of unnecessary issues. Divorce is so common in America. It has
gotten to a point that staying together for life and honoring your vows is rare. This causes severe
emotional trauma and is such a hassle. The actual statistics for divorce in a love marriage in America
is 45%. This is saying almost half of love marriages fail. When you look over to the statistics of
arranged marriage in India there is an enormous difference. The percentage of arranged

Arranged Marriage : A Type Of Marriage
The definition of an Arranged Marriage is; a type of marriage that is established before a lengthy
relationship. To make the definition more clear, it is the opposite of a love marriage. Typically in a
love marriage, the final step in the relationship is marriage. That is not the case in an arranged
marriage. One of the first steps besides meeting your new spouse, is getting married. The main
factor of an arranged marriage are the parents. The parents are what makes the marriage possible
because they are the ones who pick the spouse. The tradition ties back in history and has operated
through many years within communities and many countries.
Arranged Marriages have a rich history. It has been found that ancient societies in the West helped
shape this type of marriage. It has also been discovered that early societies have started as early as
1500 AD and during Victorian Europe. Back in the Chinese culture, arranged marriages started with
the initial relationship between families. Even though the two people planning on marrying get to
pick their own spouse, it must slide with the two families. Before the wedding happens, the two
families must meet on a official traditional dinner or supper, and ask each other man questions. One
example is when the bride's family meets the groom's family, they have to make sure the groom is
coming from wealth and good status. If the bride's family feel as if the groom is not a good match
then simply the wedding will not take place. On the other

One of my sources titled, Confluence of Influence: Indian–American Youths' Perception,

Arranged Marriages Within Modern Society
Often times, the words arranged marriage evokes fear or even anger in one's heart. For many people,
especially those with a western mindset, the liberty to choose one's own spouse remains utterly
important and even a human right in our society today. While I strongly believe that every human
owns the freedom to choose whether or not they want to marry someone, I also believe
misconceptions form in some mind's and in certain situations when the words, "arranged marriages"
are spoken. While in no way are all arranged marriages just and fair throughout the world today,

Having the same values throughout marriage remains crucial and arranged marriages often draws
two people with shared values together. When others besides the couple themselves search for
potentially good matches, shared values often proves itself important. Often, parents search for
spouses for their children with good values and morals. For example, while the child might not
always put strong values firstly in finding a spouse, Christian parents would always search within a
community of believers with the same values to look for a potential spouse for their child. When
values and morals become an important deciphering point in marriage through arrangements by
wise elders, the marriage often holds potential to last much longer than a marriage without shared
values. Young couples without wiser counsel might end up head over heels in love yet not always
discuss issues such as values which end up crucial to lasting marriages. While arranged marriages
never reach perfection like any normal matrimony, the sharing of values holds great likelihood when
orchestrated and guided by wise seniors.
Arranged marriages often start off with solid foundations especially within career and professional
potentials. When searching for a good mate for their child, parents typically also list one's ability to
provide for others as a top characteristic in a person. Parents would typically look for someone

What is an arranged marriage? Well in the Webster's dictionary it is defined as a marriage where the
marital partners are chosen by others based on considerations other than the pre–existing mutual

This habit has been very common in noble families, especially in reigning ones, at the scope of
combining and perhaps enforcing the respective strengths of originary families (and kingdoms) of
the spouses. A relevant part of history has been influenced by these unions. Arranged marriage is

Now during mid–evil England, Woman's out look on marriage was based on social status and they
believed that they should marry higher class in order to be recognized in society. While as the men
during this era looked at women as more of an object designed for their amusement and didn't hold
women in high regard, this of course was different when referring to the King, he held his queen
with the highest respects and didn't lower himself to such acts. Also arranged marriages were also
used in a manner of keeping peace among enemies by offering their daughters to the opposing

Arranged Marriages In America
Throughout society, marriage is seen as a special symbol of two people becoming one.
In the eastern side of the world, arranged marriages are very common. It is not like the western
world where couples date to know each other then choose whether they are the perfect match.
Arranged marriages are often chosen by the elders in the family. This practice has been handed
down for centuries. Throughout the marriage process, there are certain procedures that must be
followed in eastern matchmaking. Once a match has been chosen, the couple will learn over time
that commitment and acceptance comes prior to emotions and happiness. Even though our western
ways may seem normal to us, the traditions of eastern marriages are custom through procedure,
commitment and acceptance within their society.
While every traditional marriage may be different, the eastern custom has chosen to abide by long–
established procedures. These procedures consist of family members who decide on what is best for
their offspring. The decisions which are considered range from family values, education, wealth, and
physical appearance. This practice has worked well for the union of marriage for the two chosen
individuals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Marriage And Arranged Marriage
An arranged marriage can be defined as "the arrangement of a marriage exclusively by a third party
or by a joint venture of the third party and the child/person getting married" (Bowman and
Dollahite, 2013). Most marriages in the world are arranged by parents or matchmakers and in many
cultures in the non–Western world, love is believed not to be a requirement for marriage (Epstein,
Pandit, & Thakar, 2013). In some of these cultures, arranged marriages are not only accepted, but
are considered a normal part of life and it is believed that falling in love with someone who has a
different upbringing and background does not produce a successful relationship (Houghton, 2011).

These shows incorporate practical ideas that can be derived from arranged marriages of other
countries and focus on compatibility of partners and the larger picture of the nature of marriage and
relationships (Davé, 2012). In modern times, an arranged marriage can mean anything from the
family facilitating the first date to a marriage match up that is created without any input from the
bride or groom (Davé, 2012). These types of marriages offer a more thoughtful and intellectual
approach to a long term relationship rather than a passionate and lustful approach that love
marriages often have (Davé, 2012).
American View of Arranged Marriages
In the United States, 18 years old is the minimum age for marriage, however every state's marriage
law includes exceptions that allow minors to marry with parental or judicial concent, proof of
pregnancy or childbirth (Landau, 2016). These exceptions are tremendously broad and are
undefined. The parental exception provides an opportunity for parents to force their child to marry
against their will and it is often overlooked (Landau, 2016). In recent years, the recognition of
forced marriages in the US has increased and a national response is needed to protect and empower
victims (Landau, 2016). Research has revealed that about 3,853 minors were married between 2000

Think of all the time wasted concerning ourselves with the rules and necessities required to maintain
a relationship – the effort involved in looking for the "right" someone to spend the rest of our lives
with. Think of all the time that was wasted if they were the wrong person – the anguish endured
while married to the wrong person. All that time, effort, and emotional stress could certainly have
been put to better use by studying and preparing for the responsibilities of life. Our mating rituals
seem flawed and risky compared to those cultures that practice arranged marriages.
For most young Americans, relationships are a part of everyday life. However, for the majority of
Indians, they are only an afterthought. More attention is given to studies than the opposite sex. The
practice of arranging marriages has both practical and cultural rationales. Marriages are meant to
carry on a family's status and secure the family's financial future. Many Indians are not concerned
that love is absent at the onset of marriage. They feel it will happen along the way. Love is not a
major factor. Stability is the concern. Education and careers come first so there is not a lot of time
for the opposite sex. Trust is put in the wisdom of parents who rely on their life experiences to
ensure that a partner is socially and economically suitable for the family.
American marriages are based on the dream of meeting someone and falling head over heels in love.

Ethics Of Arranged Marriages
Arranged marriages have been a practice that has been around for a long time. It has been
predominantly common in third world countries where the income gap is significantly obvious
between the wealthy and the poor. By definition, arranged marriage is a marriage that is arranged by
the parents of the man and woman getting married, instead of the man and woman choosing to date
and marry each other. Shafer–Landau states that cultural relativism claims that the correct moral
standards are relative to cultures, or societies, where as ethical subjectivism claims that the correct
moral standards are those endorsed by each individual. The practice of arranged marriages and
similar scenario of forced marriages alike are both controversial and up for discussion. ... Show

As the writer, personally I think that arranged marriages are against my personal culture and ethnic
moral standards. Growing up in a society where young individuals like myself are constantly
exploring our minds and bodies, arranged marriages are out of the equation. We want to meet and
find people that fit our niche and personality, and hopefully find a significant other to spend the rest
of our lives with. The topic of arranged marriage is not in our dictionary, such an approach in
dictating our dating lives is out of the question. With social media outlets and numerous social
reforms such as gay marriage being recently legalized, it has allowed this millennial age to become
more liberate and free in the way we feel and want to express our thoughts. Personally, if I was
given an arranged marriage proposal, I would probably be angry and violate of my right as an
individual to be even given that

Arranged Marriage In America
Americans should consider a less conventional way of meeting a potential partner that would one
day be their future husband/wife. An arranged marriage is another option people should consider
when finding a person to settle down with. Such arrangement is not forcing anyone into marriage
instead it is a mutual decision. A professor of Sociology conducted a study that showed 35% of 200
married couples in America would press a button that could dissolve their marriage if they were
given the chance to (Folsom 1). Marriages that suffer a serious dissatisfaction are due to the
premature knowledge of their spouse and impulsive actions. It is safe to say, that over one–half of
all marriages in the United States are unhappy. Thus, Americans should ... Show more content on

Agreeing to an arranged marriage is no different from going online and signing up for matchmaking
services or online dating sites. In fact, since 2013 online dating sites have tripled for adults in their
20s, 40s and 50s. With the use of technology, people can register online to dating sites, and after
including their values and interests, they get instant results on their perfect match. This process is no
different from having parents and family members introduce a person to their son/daughter. Online
dating sites are an evasion of privacy. It requires for members to have personal information available
for thousands of people to see –true or false. In addition, online dating sites require for the person to
do their own research to find someone. This may easily again lead to a relationship based purely on
physical attractiveness and information that may be false, instead of the foundation of a successful

So this topic that I have been wanting to address for awhile. I was talking to a friend the other day
about the whole dating aspect of BYU–Idaho as well as just in the Mormon community. Now my
friend grew up outside of the church and so she has seen both the Mormon culture of dating as well
as the way that the world does it. Now she pointed out to me something that I never really thought
of before. She told me that it almost seems like we are so focused on the aspect of dating and getting
married because in our culture that is something that we strongly believe in because of the covenants
that we make with marriage. She said that we are in a sense having these arranged type of marriages,
in the sense that everyone around us is telling us to date this person or that person or get married
because it is a commandment and we are making these decisions not because we truly love this
person or we even truly believe that we want to get married, or even fully understand the promises
we will be making to that person and also to God. We aren't fully making this decision because we
truly believe that it is a good choice but because others around us think so and to me that does seem
a little bit like an arranged marriage.
I'm not totally knocking arranged marriages because there are a lot of people out there who make
them work, even more than people who choose the person that they marry. The only thing I disagree
with arranged marriages is the fact that agency is taken out of marriage,

Arranged Marriage And Love-Based Marriage
Faced with evidence of an increasingly globalized and progressive human society, many Americans
mistakenly assume the established universal predominance of the "love–based" marriage institution,
often believing that the "antiquated" practice of arranged marriage has become outmoded in a
modern age hallmarked by prevailing Western conceptions of individuality, personal liberty, and
gender equality. This ethnocentric perspective grossly misrepresents the reality of the heterogeneous
and heavily culture–dependent tradition of marriage, as the majority of marriages in India are still
arranged and follow adapted mores of traditional, ancestral marriage praxes (Angeloni 85). In
conducting a cross–cultural comparison of love marriages and arranged marriages, it is tempting to
select the "better" of the two marriage forms–this, however, is an ideographically and culturally
subjective parameter by which to analyze the potential merits and drawbacks of these two modes of
marriage. Ultimately, the notion of cultural relativism–that "every culture is to be judged by its own
premises [and] its own axioms" (Bohannan 33)–crucially pertains to the objective study of arranged
marriages and love–based marriages which, upon reflection, appear equally well–suited and sensible
within their own separate cultural contexts. Love–based marriages in the United States typically
entail the wedding of two individuals after a prolonged courtship based on their mutual romantic
affection for one another

Importance Of Arranged Marriage
For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, til death do us part. The social
institution of marriage is principally defined as a formally sanctioned union between two individuals
by which certain rights and responsibilities are established for and between the spouses. Although
marriage is observed as a cultural universal amongst all human populations on the globe, the
institution of matrimony still differs in its definition according to particular cultures, regions, and
religions. In the governing traditions and customs by which a life partner is selected, America
wholeheartedly embraces love marriages where one's life partner is personally selected by an
individual based on his/her desires, whereas modern–day India continues to uphold its ancient
traditions of arranged marriages by having close family and kin influence the selection of the
spouse. As the Western world contests the Eastern practice of arranged marriages as a violation of
rights and a loss of independent experience in the dating world, marital unions by modern–Indian
arranged marriages are, however, morally and ethically acceptable because they ensure a satisfactory
married life, preserve culture but also peace between the families, and are arranged in the belief that
parents know what is best for their child.
Modern–day Indian arranged marriages are ethically appropriate because it guarantees that an
individual will get married and increases the likelihood of long–term

marriages, 11,250,000 involve girls under the age of 18 years old (STATS). The practice of arranged
marriage has been very prevalent in most cultures throughout history. For many women arranged
marriage is a way to stay safe and protected in countries where they are given very few rights, and in
others cultures it is used to created slaves for men to use however they wish. In countries, such as

In "Marriage is a Private Affair" by Chinua Achebe, the main character struggles with admitting to
his very traditional father that he will not take part of their tribes tradition of having an arranged
marriage: "He turned over in his mind different ways of overcoming his father opposition"
(Achebe). The main character, Nnaemeka, wants to marry a girl from the city where he lives and not
the girl who his father has chosen for him. He does not know the girl who his father has chosen and
is in love with Nene, the girl from the city. He is afraid of how his father is going to react and knows

The Marriage Of Arranged Marriage
Arranged marriage is a form of marital union in which family members or matchmakers select
spouses for someone based on cultural background, financial status, dietary habits, religion and
other key factors. This type of marriage is mostly practiced in the Middle East, South East Asia,
Africa and some South American countries. In contrast, love marriage (free will) is a form of
marriage that is used in countries that practice arranged marriages to define a marriage in which
partners are allowed to marry someone of their own choice; this diverges from an arranged
marriage, which is considered the norm in this culture. Free will marriages are considered to be a
taboo among many families in the Indian culture, whether it is in India or American. According to
them, marriage is a bond that two people should tie only with the consent, blessings and approval of
their parents and family members. In the Western culture there is no such thing as arrange marriage
since usually couples have the free will to marry someone based on their own liking.
Introduction
Roughly 40–50% of marriages result in divorce in the United States today (Kazdin, 2000). In lieu of
this disturbing number, what is the secret to upholding a happy marriage? A satisfying married life is
essential for the mental and physical well being of a person. A disgruntled or unhappy marriage can

Arranged marriage is a bad decision
Marriage is defined as legal or religious union of two person in which they live together. There are
different kind of marriage but mostly arrange marriage and love marriage is talked. "In many
cultures, marriages are arranged by the parents, sometimes with the couple having little or no say.
Such arranged marriages are often found within societies with a high degree of hierarchy and
awareness of social rank" (BOOK). People often say arranged marriage are highly traditional and
renowned, protect values and so on but what about in the life of bride and groom? Will they be
happy protecting values and culture? Thus, Arranged marriage is a bad decision because they lack a
freedom to choose and interference from extended family, lack of trust, understanding and love is
not a first priority, and social problem.
Arranged marriage takes place in different part of the world. "A recent research conducted by a
post–graduate student of Amity University, New Delhi has brought to light the finding that arranged
marriages in India originated during the Vedic period of Indian history" (Chettri). It is the period (c.
1500 – c.500 B.C.E) during which the Vedas, the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism were composed.
Similarly, Helena Minchew, program officer in International Women's Health Coalition wrote in her
article, "The Human Rights Council in Geneva on 2nd July 2015 adopted its first substantive

Compare And Contrast Arranged Marriage And Arranged Marriages
When you think of arranged marriages you will probably have an image of a 16th to 19th century
picture going on in your head since that's when it was really common and normalize back then, but
that's not always the case because even now in modern times arranged marriages are still practiced
throughout other places and countries such as India, Japan, and China. Some keep up these old
traditions for their religious beliefs and others for their own personal reasons. As we step into
modern times though, a new type of forming a relationship has had an uprising for the past decade
or so which has come to be known as online dating. Some may feel like online dating is different
from arranged marriages and in a way it is but in many ways, online dating and arranged marriages
have the same structure just with fewer people involved.
Arranged marriages viewed by people with American standards will probably feel like those
involved in an arranged marriage are being forced into something they have no say in because their
parents want to marry them off to some stranger and while that may be the case for some, not many
involved feel that way. What many people do however is confuse forced marriages and arranged
marriages as the same thing when that is not the case and those with negative feelings towards
arranged marriages will always see those two types of marriage as the same thing. Forced marriage
is a marriage in which one or more of the individuals is married without his or her consent

Definition of culture is a wide range. Culture is language, art, food, cloth, lifestyle, and believe. I
was born and lived in Japan 19 years. When I came to the United States, I was surprised how
Japanese and American culture is different. Japan and America is different language, food and
lifestyle. There is a Japanese culture that American culture should adapt for social benefit. That is
arranged marriage. There were many countries that arranged marriage is popular around the world.
However, recently, arranged marriage is no more popular because society, and people's idea

marriage is very popular since long time ago. A few decades ago, arranged marriage was forced
marriage, and wealthy people do that for keeping family well–off. However, definition and style of
arranged marriage changed recently. Arranged marriage is more like matchmaking. Parents do not
force marriage anymore. They encourage to find good partner for daughter or son. "Arranged

Marriage is a bond between a male and a female that binds together two families, and it constitutes
the base of the society. Every culture has its own definition of marriage, however all cultures agree
that understanding, care, honesty, trust, love, patience and respect are the factors of having a

never the less I believe that love marriage is better because the couple get a chance to know each
other before the marriage, and know what they both like and dislike. Love marriage makes different

Arranged Marriages Cultures and countries around the world have differing views on many topics
such as whether or not babies should be baptized, vaccinations, abortion and marriages. One topic
that has been of controversy and is viewed differently in many countries is marriage and whether or
not arranged marriages are better than love marriages. There are several different reasons why
people in India believe that arranged marriages are the best; likewise, people in Western countries
such as the United States believe that love marriages are best. Most westerners have a
misconception on arranged marriages. An arranged marriage is a marital union where the groom and
the bride are chosen by a third party, such as a mother, father, grandfather or grandmother. Most
often confused with a forced marriage, which is where the bride and groom are chosen by a third
party and are forced to marry each other or suffer the consequences. In western countries, marriages
are considered "love marriages" where the bride and groom select each other and decide to get
married based on their love and affection for one another. Even though arranged marriages and love
marriages greatly differ from one another and each has advantages and disadvantages, neither one is
better than the other in the long run. The primary difference between a love marriage and an
arranged marriage is the person who selects the spouse. "In an arranged marriage, parents

Due to that, the couple might end up with suffering and divorce. In case of love marriage, people
might expect more from their partner, largely because they have fallen in love before marriage. This
leads to lesser compromises, as the person expects more from his or her partner. On the other hand,
this shows that in an arranged marriage, the couple will not expect anything from the partner instead
give a full commitment to adjust themselves with their partner." Furthermore, world divorce statistic
illustrates that India records the lowest rate of divorce which is 1.1% compared to the other
countries such as United States which records 54% of divorce rate – leading the most high divorce
rate (American for Divorce Reform, 2002. Retrieved from: http://divorcerate2011.com/divorce–

Western countries, the practice of arranged marriage may become one of the factors that contribute
to this significant statistic. In fact, arranged marriage somehow reduces the divorce rate. Therefore,
these prove that arranged marriage is more stable than love marriage.

The Marriage Of Arranged Marriage
How often have you allowed someone to choose your clothes, shoes, food, holiday, school, career?
Not that often, so how about letting someone choose your husband or wife? That is how arranged
marriages work, someone else choses your spouse for you. We are now living in a generation where
we are highly influenced by what we see in the media. Cultures that practice arranged marriage are
now shifting toward the Western norms of marriage. Many people are not familiar with arranged
marriages and come to judge to quickly without having any knowledge on the topic. Arranged
marriage is a marriage that is organized by two families for the marriage of their son or daughter, it
is an old tradition that has many flaws and errors due to todays standards (Medora, Larson, Hortacsu
& Dave). Several people look past these flaws and continue to practice this repetitive area of life.
Arranged marriages tend to have tradition and cultural issues behind them, these marriages also fall
inline with Marx' theory of social class. Lastly, arranged marriages are not the same as they once
were due to the rapid growth in technology and changes in social norms.
Arranges marriages have been evolving over the years and becoming less strict due to the different
social values Canadians have. The Canadian society finds it odd that one has to marry someone else

Renaissance Arranged Marriage
Arranged marriage in the Renaissance era was very popular among Florentine families. This was the
way of life for multiple different reasons. Arranged marriages were the way things were run in order
to bring two families together. The two families hopes were to gain an alliance and more importantly
gain wealth. Another objective was producing offspring more specifically boys that could eventually
inherit the family wealth and power. Although there were many positives with arrange marriage,
there were also a numerous amount of negatives with this lifestyle. Arranged marriage was a
complicated business. The girls were usually anywhere from fourteen to seventeen years of age with
a difference of fifteen to twenty years to their husbands or even greater if it were his second
marriage. Girls were young because with they way society worked they wanted the girls to be able
to produce as many children as possible. The goal was to have the young girl pregnant every other
year until she was done ovulating. Although this seems like it would end with an enormous amount
of children that was not the case because many children did not survive. On the other hand, men
were older when married because society wanted them to have a social network and wealth and
such. With the wife being young and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

History Of Arranged Marriages
In India arranged marriages have had a huge impact on the world's society since the Elizabethan Era
, this is why America should and is getting involved. Arranged marriages are most commonly found
in eastern cultures like India or Japan. Arranged marriages are when relatives, close friends, or
priests arrange for a couple to get married. The marriages are used for purposes like gaining wealth,
allies, or power even if that means the marriage is unfair. In order for both families to be benefited
with wealth they must both participate in arranging the marriage Think of it as more of an alliance
between families, not a Union of couples (source 2). Getting married this way gives women very
little choice in who they marry and why. Along with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One Indian girl stated, "It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Shadi, the word for marriage in many
Indian languages, is the first word a child understands after mummy and papa" (source 7). Women,
in arranged marriages, were to treat their husbands like gods and be obedient. Young brides have
even been treated abusively, by husbands, to get more money from the bride's father or because they
weren't obedient enough. Girls feel objectified because ads are sometimes placed in the newspaper
or websites about them looking for husbands and the price that must be paid for them. The two
hardest parts of being in an arranged marriage is the fact that couples have to give up their freedom
of choosing a spouse. Also, the fear that love may never grow between the couples;however, love
sometimes can occur after the marriages. The sad truth is, families sometimes kill women for not
accepting the partner that was picked for them and women can be forced into unwanted marriages.
America has begun to address arranged marriage through new laws and policies concerning forced
marriage victims. It is now illegal for the parents of the bride or groom to stop the couple in love
from marrying who they want to marry. However, parents can still threaten their children by taking
them out of the will. Dowries are also prohibited by law in India so the women can no longer be
bought. This law helps prevent unnecessary deaths or injuries. Arranged marriages can sometimes
fall into the category of violation of human rights, health endangerment, and education lose if done
improperly. Pregnancy and childbirth complications are the leading cause of death for girls ages 15
through 19 in developing countries. One thing America has done to help with arranged marriages is
come up with the Tahirih Justice Center organizations. These organizations help in protecting
women and girls fleeing

Arranged Marriage Research Paper

  • 1. Arranged Marriage Research Paper In the next 10 years, more than 100 million girls are going to be married before the age of 18. In most cases, girls already are married off to older men when they are still children. There are so many reasons as to why the United States has already banned child–arranged marriages. Today, 20 countries around the world still allow child arranged marriages. The points I will be discussing today are; what child arranged marriages are, the emotional and mental effects it has on women, and lastly how the girl's health is at serious risk. The past couple of days I have researched this topic to give me credibility, and I have come up with some valid points as to why I believe arranged marriages are wrong and should be banned globally. An arranged marriage is the process of the bride and groom's parents/guardians ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many complicated reasons they claim as to why these countries still perform arranged marriages and at some points, I can see where they are coming from. However, the things that people do not talk about and the things that people do not really see that is what I am talking about here. So maybe it is a lot to ask that child arranged marriages be ban, but at least raising awareness to expose the truth behind it. Works Cited bureau, The idea. • 3. Essay On Arranged Marriage In the year of 2016, 26,250,000 arranged marriages occurred annually worldwide. In another perspective, 52.25% of marriages were arranged as of 2016 ("Arranged/Forced"). Arrange marriage has many customs and traditions, and requirements for the future bride or groom.Refusal to this type of marriage can cause many problems on sides of the family and child. These requirements and consequences of refusal can be shown in the short story "Marriage is a Private Affair" by Chinua Achebe. Arranged marriages are highly common but yet many people do not know the customs and traditions of arranged marriage. In arranged marriages, parents choose their son or daughter's future spouse with only a little input from the soon to be newly–weds. If either the son or daughter refuses the choice, the parents tend to respect their wishes and will find someone else ("Traditional"). Sometimes, in other cultures it varies and the consequences of refusal to arrange marriage are: "...the consequences for both men and women were they would be considered a burden to their family and if the parents went to extreme measures then the child could be disowned, beaten, or even be given the death penalty" ("Consequences"). Additionally, in arranging the girl and boy have to be of the same religion, have a good social status, and have the same culture/traditions. Anyone that does not follow these requirements is seen as an unfit match. Advantages of arranged marriage are they shorten the time of dating, let ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. AArranged Marriage Humans, regardless of their location in the world have many aspects of their lives that are similar to one another. From daily life to traditions humans share a lot of attributes with one another in which they do not realize. One of the greatest parts of life would be finding a person out in the world that you are privileged to spend the rest of your life with. An equal half to you, someone who bares all the grueling and breath taking moments that life has planned. The practice of marriage has been around since the earliest civilizations. To this day still continues just as strong. However the possibility of finding the potential other person to spend the rest of your life can find you or can be found through an outside connection. As a result of modern social constructs and the methodology of traditional arranged marriages, they do not possess the marital requirements essential to succeed in the western culture. An arranged marriage can be defined as the union of two individuals to be married, brought together by a third party individual outside of the relationship. Throughout the course of history, arranged marriages have had a substantial role in shaping it, originally dating back centuries before and were considered a common practice around the majority of cultures. Marriage, for example in Hinduism is considered a coming together of two souls, and the longevity of it can extend into their next lives. In addition, it is also seen as a dharma meaning a mandatory ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Due to migration the practice has been extended today to western world countries. Many families choose their daughters' husbands according to wealth, so converting the woman into a tradable good. Arranged marriage is a marital union where a third party matches the bride and the groom; arranged marriages were common globally until the 18th century. In modern times, arranged marriages are common in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. In more developed countries, arranged marriages are still common in royal families, various parts of Japan, and in minority ethnic groups. • 9. The Movie Arranged Marriage Some people follow arranged marriages through religious beliefs. Each era of their family tree has passed this down to one another in hopes to continue culture. This marriage started in India and later expanded into different countries like Japan, Islam, etc. In the movie "Arranged" it shows the perspective of a different culture. There are two women name Rochel and Nasira. One woman is Jewish the other Muslims and finds out plenty of similarities they share. Both families were strict on rules and worried about other people opinions on their family names. They were two diverse families, but different religion and culture went through the same arranged marriage process. I also learned more about the clothing that is worn by Muslim, and this is important in their culture. Women wear a scarf that is called "hijab." In the U.S culture, it is not recommended to wear anything on your head, but you have the option to follow any religion. According to "American Culture: Traditions and Custom of the United States" Zimmermann states "Nearly every known religion is practiced in the United States, which was founded by religious freedom." I was raised upon the Christian religion, and the differences between Rochel and me from the movie is not getting matched up with someone for marriage or wearing clothing due to belief. Another thing I learned is the henna tattoo dye these women put on their hands and feet, and each pattern is meaningful to their culture, and the U.S culture doesn't ... • 11. The Marriage Of Arranged Marriage For Better or for Worse My parents had a choice to marry for love, but, unfortunately, their parents did not. Imagine the world where family members or close friends chose your spouse based on their expectations. Should this be the way to go about marriage, or does this hinder a person's ability to live for themselves? In India alone, around 90% of marriages are arranged by their families (CNN). They would choose who ever they believe would best fit the person, but not necessarily love them (Queano). Although arranged marriage is a custom in many countries, is it the right thing to do? People deserve the right to choose for themselves whom they will marry. Marriage is about love and finding the right person that makes you the happiest, rather than someone who's just there for your benefit. According to Asia–Pacific Economic Blog: An arranged marriage is one where the families have pre–decided on a spouse for the child. The two people getting married often do not know each other, and have no choice in the matter. It is a highly traditional practice in many Indian and Asian cultures, and has been practiced for centuries. The debate on this issue is difficult because the views differ greatly depending on your culture. (Economic Blog ) We the people of America have the freedom to make our own decisions. Unfortunately, this is not the case for many people worldwide. These people are limited to the choices they are allowed to make. I believe marriage is a very important stage ... • 13. Arranged Marriage Sociology When comparing many sociological perspectives and theories against the idea of arranged marriages in India there are many conclusions that can be drawn. In specific, feminism, functionalism, and the conflict theory all point out very interesting facts. Some of these theories do a much better job in terms of accounting for this phenomena; which is not surprising as we looks at the long and detailed history of the subject. However, there is no sole theory that can truly be linked to account for the total occurrence of such a subject. As you will see, there are many factors that come into play when an arranged marriage takes place. Not only are the couple being married affected, but the families of both the man and the woman are traditionally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This theory is focused on the inequalities of different groups in a society, and on the level of power associated to these groups (Mooney, 2000). In the case of arranged marriages in India, there can be said to be many groups that both contribute and are created with unequal power through the process. To begin with, the parents potentially hold the future of their child in their hands as they are the ones who choose the significant other (Sandhya, 2013). In the interest of wealth, power and security, most families choose a person with a significant amount of higher status in the society because through the marriage, ties between the families strengthen and so do both of their overall prestige (Sandhya, 2013). It can be said that families marry into one another, and this creates economic inequalities as these groups are formed. This idea of marriage being a family affair all starts with people who hold more power than others, the parents versus the child, and end by creating an even larger group that differs from many other others in that country (Sandhya, 2013). Overall, I believe that the conflict theory can be said to best describe the idea of arranged marriages because of the nature that encompasses the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. 'Arranged Marriage' By Sanjay Kali Did you know, in some cultures such as India, Korea, and Orthodox Jews allow arranged marriages? Arranged marriage is when two families agree to marry their kids, usually without the child's consent. In the article "Arranged Marriage" by Sanjay Kali, it talks about the positive and negative things about arranged marriages. I strongly believe that arranged marriages are a negative idea since the majority of arranged marriages never end well. In arranged marriages there are many negative things. Such as making the decision to marry someone who you have only met, and is a complete stranger to you. Another negative thing is not knowing much about the person, such as what their dislikes and likes are. Sanjay Kali said "There is no work involved ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Arranged Marriages And Love Marriages Wufeng Yuan Patricia France English 1A 5 May 2015 Arranged Marriage: In the broadest sense, marriages have been divided into two general categories; arranged marriages and love marriages. As the name implies, an arranged marriage is defined as a marriage where the bride and groom are exclusively selected by a third party (usually their parents), while in a love marriage, people choose their marital partners based on their feelings or attraction for one another. In America and Western Europe, marriages based on love, have dominated their cultures for a long time and, as a result, when it comes to arranged marriages, most American's first reaction would be: "Oh! This kind of marriage is so relentless and incredible, because we have no voice." However, times are changing, and so is the attitude toward marriage. America is a "melting pot," which means it is a multicultural society, and there are so many immigrants from other countries in America. Due to international migration, both arranged marriages and love marriages have co–existed in peace and affected each other. Although some argue that arranged couples don't have a choice in choosing their life partner, we can't deny the benefits of arranged marriages, as it can help them obtain full and complete support from their families, better understand each other and provide a high possibility for a successful and happy marriage. First of all, an arranged marriage can help the bride and the groom gain the acceptance and support ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Advantages Of Arranged Marriages "I didn't want to disappear into a forced marriage. I wanted my freedom" Sabatina James. One of today's societal norms is having the choice to marry who you desire. The long–age tradition of having arranged marriages in other countries and even in cultures in america today, arranged marriages have different meanings and circumstances. Some countries like China and India have modernized their tradition of arranged marriages, while other countries still use arranged marriages for wealth and status in society. Are arranged marriages more effective to keep couple's together? Divorce rates in America have reached a high of 40 to 50 percent. Arranged marriages in today's era, even in America, is based on the foundation of wanting to find someone to love and have given up on finding someone themselves, or have let their parents set up an arrangement with another person to possibly marry. The difference with older traditions and modern arranged marriages is the purpose. Modern arranged marriages are set up on the foundation of finding the perfect match but the the pair can decide if they actually want to get married or not, however, older traditions did not allow the rejection of a spouse. A muslim couple in America had an arranged marriage, they didn't want an arranged marriage at first but, they let their parents intervene and arrange a set up because that was traditional of their culture. "Theirs was a match with an American twist. They got to meet each other first and see if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Argumentative Essay On Arranged Marriage Sylvia Welch English 101 Dr. Jones 26 June 2017 Essay 3 Marriage Marriage is a union between a man and woman. Selecting a husband and wife is one of the most important decisions of a person's life because a marriage can bring either a happy or unhappy life. Choosing the best partner is one of the keys to get a happy marriage. For some people they may choose to get married with the person whom they love, which is love marriage. Actually, there are two kinds of marriage that are love marriage and arranged marriage. Arranged marriage is when the parents or family will choose the partner of their child or relatives. Arranged marriages occur in around the world especially in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. In many cultures believe that marriage is not always love. Those people claim that the couple who are getting married still young and have less experience. In this sense, some cultures believe that the best choice of the child's partner is made by his or her parents. However, it is still controversial among people that choosing arranged marriage is the same with forced marriage. In this sense, the couple do not have a freedom of choice to choose their own partner. They have to follow their parents decision to get married with the person. In some countries, people do not agree with arranged marriages, especially for the Western people. They believe that every person has their own choice to choose their partner in a marriage. • 23. Arranged Marriage Vs Love Marriage The debate amongst love marriage and arranged marriage will never stop. That is not the goal. Everyone goes about marriage a different way. Having the choice between an arranged marriage and a love marriage is helpful for many people. There are many more advantages to an arranged marriage than a love marriage. In the past, arranged marriages were the most popular, but modern times have shifted the view to more love marriages despite the disadvantages accompanying it. Family is so important. An arranged marriage is accepted by the bride and groom as they believe their elders are able to make the best decision when it comes to who the marry. An arranged marriage focuses on family union. This establishes trust amongst family members and automatically the new addition to the family has immense approval, something a love marriage may not have. For example, say a woman goes out and marries a man. She shows him to the family and they disapprove of him. They say he is not right for her. This upsets the daughter and the husband, and creates a family divide. This creates a situation where the woman must choose between two things she loves. This could all be avoided by arranged marriage. Arranged marriages presuppose that two people are perfectly matched because they belong to the same culture, share the same religious upbringing, speak the same language, and raised in more or less the same socio–economic class. These identical backgrounds make it easier for the couple to communicate with each other and understand where each is coming from. Decisions in the upbringing of future children and their education leave little room for disparities in their thinking because of this likeness. The preapproval of the spouse solves a plethora of unnecessary issues. Divorce is so common in America. It has gotten to a point that staying together for life and honoring your vows is rare. • 25. Arranged Marriage : A Type Of Marriage The definition of an Arranged Marriage is; a type of marriage that is established before a lengthy relationship. To make the definition more clear, it is the opposite of a love marriage. Typically in a love marriage, the final step in the relationship is marriage. That is not the case in an arranged marriage. One of the first steps besides meeting your new spouse, is getting married. The main factor of an arranged marriage are the parents. The parents are what makes the marriage possible because they are the ones who pick the spouse. The tradition ties back in history and has operated through many years within communities and many countries. Arranged Marriages have a rich history. It has been found that ancient societies in the West helped shape this type of marriage. It has also been discovered that early societies have started as early as 1500 AD and during Victorian Europe. Back in the Chinese culture, arranged marriages started with the initial relationship between families. Even though the two people planning on marrying get to pick their own spouse, it must slide with the two families. Before the wedding happens, the two families must meet on a official traditional dinner or supper, and ask each other man questions. One example is when the bride's family meets the groom's family, they have to make sure the groom is coming from wealth and good status. If the bride's family feel as if the groom is not a good match then simply the wedding will not take place. On the other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of my sources titled, Confluence of Influence: Indian–American Youths' Perception, Negotiation, and Transformation of Arranged Marriage Traditions in Modern American Society, written by Dianne Laura Fabii, talked about the opinions of second–generation Indian–American youth on arranged marriages (show visual). Their parents, grandparents, and past generations all had one, but since they are growing up in the United States, a western country where individualism and freedom are highly valued, they decided that the tradition will not apply to their futures (Fabii, 2017). In addition, I came upon an article which was a real–life story rather than a collection of data. It was from National Public Radio written by Jamie Tarabay, titled, Arranged Marriage: Trapped Between Two Cultures. It focused on a 25–year–old female named Mediha Sandhu (show visual) who is dealing with her parents wanting her to move to Pakistan to have an arranged marriage, as opposed to her wanting to stay in New Jersey. The article dives deep into her story and explains her feeling trapped between two completely different cultures. For many people, especially those with a western mindset, the liberty to choose one's own spouse remains utterly important and even a human right in our society today. While I strongly believe that every human owns the freedom to choose whether or not they want to marry someone, I also believe misconceptions form in some mind's and in certain situations when the words, "arranged marriages" are spoken. Having the same values throughout marriage remains crucial and arranged marriages often draws two people with shared values together. When others besides the couple themselves search for potentially good matches, shared values often proves itself important. Often, parents search for spouses for their children with good values and morals. For example, while the child might not always put strong values firstly in finding a spouse, Christian parents would always search within a community of believers with the same values to look for a potential spouse for their child. When values and morals become an important deciphering point in marriage through arrangements by wise elders, the marriage often holds potential to last much longer than a marriage without shared values. Young couples without wiser counsel might end up head over heels in love yet not always discuss issues such as values which end up crucial to lasting marriages. While arranged marriages never reach perfection like any normal matrimony, the sharing of values holds great likelihood when orchestrated and guided by wise seniors. Arranged marriages often start off with solid foundations especially within career and professional potentials. Well in the Webster's dictionary it is defined as a marriage where the marital partners are chosen by others based on considerations other than the pre–existing mutual attraction of the partners. • 33. Arranged Marriages In America Throughout society, marriage is seen as a special symbol of two people becoming one. In the eastern side of the world, arranged marriages are very common. It is not like the western world where couples date to know each other then choose whether they are the perfect match. Arranged marriages are often chosen by the elders in the family. This practice has been handed down for centuries. Throughout the marriage process, there are certain procedures that must be followed in eastern matchmaking. Once a match has been chosen, the couple will learn over time that commitment and acceptance comes prior to emotions and happiness. Even though our western ways may seem normal to us, the traditions of eastern marriages are custom through procedure, commitment and acceptance within their society. While every traditional marriage may be different, the eastern custom has chosen to abide by long– established procedures. These procedures consist of family members who decide on what is best for their offspring. The decisions which are considered range from family values, education, wealth, and physical appearance. The parental exception provides an opportunity for parents to force their child to marry against their will and it is often overlooked (Landau, 2016). In recent years, the recognition of forced marriages in the US has increased and a national response is needed to protect and empower victims (Landau, 2016). Now my friend grew up outside of the church and so she has seen both the Mormon culture of dating as well as the way that the world does it. Now she pointed out to me something that I never really thought of before. She told me that it almost seems like we are so focused on the aspect of dating and getting married because in our culture that is something that we strongly believe in because of the covenants that we make with marriage. She said that we are in a sense having these arranged type of marriages, in the sense that everyone around us is telling us to date this person or that person or get married because it is a commandment and we are making these decisions not because we truly love this person or we even truly believe that we want to get married, or even fully understand the promises we will be making to that person and also to God. • 49. Arranged Marriage And Love-Based Marriage Faced with evidence of an increasingly globalized and progressive human society, many Americans mistakenly assume the established universal predominance of the "love–based" marriage institution, often believing that the "antiquated" practice of arranged marriage has become outmoded in a modern age hallmarked by prevailing Western conceptions of individuality, personal liberty, and gender equality. This ethnocentric perspective grossly misrepresents the reality of the heterogeneous and heavily culture–dependent tradition of marriage, as the majority of marriages in India are still arranged and follow adapted mores of traditional, ancestral marriage praxes (Angeloni 85). In conducting a cross–cultural comparison of love marriages and arranged marriages, it is tempting to select the "better" of the two marriage forms–this, however, is an ideographically and culturally subjective parameter by which to analyze the potential merits and drawbacks of these two modes of marriage. Ultimately, the notion of cultural relativism–that "every culture is to be judged by its own premises [and] its own axioms" (Bohannan 33)–crucially pertains to the objective study of arranged marriages and love–based marriages which, upon reflection, appear equally well–suited and sensible within their own separate cultural contexts. The social institution of marriage is principally defined as a formally sanctioned union between two individuals by which certain rights and responsibilities are established for and between the spouses. Although marriage is observed as a cultural universal amongst all human populations on the globe, the institution of matrimony still differs in its definition according to particular cultures, regions, and religions. In the governing traditions and customs by which a life partner is selected, America wholeheartedly embraces love marriages where one's life partner is personally selected by an individual based on his/her desires, whereas modern–day India continues to uphold its ancient traditions of arranged marriages by having close family and kin influence the selection of the spouse. As the Western world contests the Eastern practice of arranged marriages as a violation of rights and a loss of independent experience in the dating world, marital unions by modern–Indian arranged marriages are, however, morally and ethically acceptable because they ensure a satisfactory married life, preserve culture but also peace between the families, and are arranged in the belief that parents know what is best for their child. This type of marriage is mostly practiced in the Middle East, South East Asia, Africa and some South American countries. In contrast, love marriage (free will) is a form of marriage that is used in countries that practice arranged marriages to define a marriage in which partners are allowed to marry someone of their own choice; this diverges from an arranged marriage, which is considered the norm in this culture.
