Causes of Climate Change-
Natural Causes & Human Causes
Effects of Climate Change
4. DEFINITION OF CLIMATE CHANGE
“ It is a change which is attributed
directly or indirectly to human activity
that alters the composition of the
global atmosphere and which is in
addition to natural climate variability
observed over comparative time
periods”
5. CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE
NATURAL CAUSES
Volcanic eruptions
volcanoes can impact climate change. During
major explosive eruptions huge amounts
of volcanic gas, aerosol droplets, and ash are
injected into the stratosphere. ...
But volcanic gases like sulfur dioxide can
cause global cooling, while volcanic carbon
dioxide, a greenhouse gas, has the potential to
promote global warming
6. Ocean currents
Ocean currents act as conveyer
belts of warm and cold water,
sending heat toward the polar
regions and helping tropical
areas cool off, thus influencing
both weather and climate.
7. Earth orbital changes-
More tilt = warmer summers & colder
winters
Less tilt = cooler summers & milder winters
8. Solar Variation
resulting imbalance between
incoming solar radiation and outgoing thermal
radiation will likely cause Earth to heat up over
the next century, accelerating the melting polar
ice caps, causing sea levels to rise and
increasing the probability of more violent global
weather patterns.
9. HUMAN CAUSES (Anthropogenic or Man-made
causes)
Greenhouse gases
Deforestation
Coal mining
Burning of fossil fuels
Industrial processes
Agriculture

CO2 CO2Atmosphere
Ocean
“shelled-critters”
CO2 and carbonate (which plankton use to make
shells) combine in the ocean.
The ocean is already more acidic than it was 50
years ago.
