5. 1. The first step is to draw
your window and shutters.
2. Draw 2 or 3 flower pots.
3. Draw a line where the rail
will be if your window
opens onto a balcony.
4. Lightly draw in a few boats
or an island with palm trees
or a sunset over the water
or whatever you like that
you see through the
window.
5. Use a large brush to paint in
the background colors.
6. Use the same large
flat brush to paint the
shutters, the water,
the sky, and the
flower pots. We’ll put
in details later.
7. 1. Use a slightly smaller flat brush
to put in some details on your
shutters.
2. Add some details to your
water and sky.
3. Paint your boats or other
things in your window frame.
4. Finally, use the same brush to
make some little marks for
leaves. Try making different
colors of greens for your leaves.
Or even using other colors.
8. Add a few colorful
details like flowers
in the flower pots.
9. Use oil pastels to add
some details and patterns
to your picture.

Before the invention of the photograph, artists felt that they must make copies of what they saw. For a long time, artists were often paid by a patron to paint pictures of people or animals of landscapes to look like those things.
After the invention of the photograph, some artists began to think that painting should not be a copy of what was seen and that it should be more or different in some way.
Another example of artists painting what they see as realistically as possible.
Matisse was part of a group of artists called the fauves which means “Wild Beasts.” They used colors in a way that other artists had never done. They were often bright and the paintings were child-like.
This idea of making paintings with imaginative use of color was a new idea.
