Mental Attitude: Does Type 2 Diabetes Inhibit Creativity? MRI scans of 42 type 2 diabetics and 42 healthy controls show that
those with type 2 diabetes have reduced connectivity in the areas of the brain that make up the default-mode network. The default-
mode network is the part of the brain that activates when an individual is daydreaming, picturing the future, or recalling memories,
among other functions. Some scientists believe the default-mode network is also responsible for the generation of spontaneous
creative thoughts. This may partially explain why type 2 diabetics exhibit some reduced cognitive function and are at a greater risk for
dementia later in life. European Radiology, April 2015
Health Alert: Medical Costs Still a Problem For a Third of Americans. Even though uninsured rates fell as a result of the
Affordable Care Act, millions of Americans still find the cost of healthcare to be prohibitive. Overall, it's estimated that during the
previous twelve months, 36% of American adults didn’t seek care when sick, didn’t fill prescriptions, skipped medical tests, didn’t
schedule follow-up appointments, and/or passed on seeing a specialist due to out-of-pocket costs associated with those services.

Diet: Maple Syrup May Help Defeat Bacteria. The emergence of drug-resistant bacteria as the result of inappropriate antibiotic use
is a major public health problem. A team of researchers from McGill University suggests they have found a possible solution to this
urgent issue: maple syrup extract. According to their findings, concentrated maple syrup extract makes disease-causing bacteria more
susceptible to antibiotics. Specifically, the extract causes cell membranes of bacteria to become more porous, which makes it easier for
the antibiotics to enter the cells. Researcher Dr. Nathalie Tufenkji adds, "I could see maple syrup extract being incorporated
eventually, for example, into the capsules of antibiotics." Applied and Environmental Microbiology, April 2015
Exercise: More Exercise Education Needed in US Medical Schools. According to new research, fewer that half of physicians
trained in the United States in 2013 received formal education or training regarding exercise. Physicians play a significant role in
encouraging patients to get more exercise, but research has shown that many physicians lack the education, skills, or confidence to
counsel patients about physical activity. Co-author Dr. Marita K. Cardinal writes, "We really need to see something happen to address
this. How do we get it more institutionalized into medical school curriculum? This is a question researchers have been asking for 40
years now. It is about time we figured it out." Oregon State University, April 2015
Chiropractic: Chronic Back Pain Can Affect Leg Strength During Running. An analysis of runners both with and without
chronic low back pain shows that the presence of back pain can change the performance of the lower limbs during a run. Researchers
found that participants with low back pain had 12.2% less knee extensor strength while running than those without back pain.

Wellness/Prevention: Prevent Injury When Golfing. If you like to golf, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
recommends you take precautions to ward off possible injuries such as performing basic stretches before you start swinging clubs.
They also recommend protecting yourself from the sun by using sunscreen, sunglasses, and a brimmed hat; drink plenty of fluids
before, during, and after golfing; if using a golf cart, drive and ride safely, pay attention to your surroundings when it comes to other
players on the course; and be prepared for changing weather conditions. American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, April 2015
