Mental Attitude: Type 2 Diabetes May Increase Dementia Risk. A review of data from twenty published studies
indicates that patients with type 2 diabetes have reduced gray matter volume in regions of the brain associated with social
cognition, contemplating distance, recognition of known faces, accessing word meaning while reading, face and body
recognition, and processing of color information. The authors of the review note that their findings may suggest that type
2 diabetics have an increased risk for dementia later in life. Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications, December 2017
Health Alert: Patients Not Thrilled When Doctors Use Computers During Office Visit. Electronic medical records
have become commonplace in the healthcare setting, which has led to doctors entering data into a computer when talking
with a patient. A new study that included 120 patients found that 75% preferred their doctor to take notes with pen and
paper during the encounter versus typing their findings into a computer. Lead author Dr. Ali Haider explains, "Most
patients found doctors who used computers were less compassionate, had poorer communication skills, and were less
professional than the doctors who didn't use computers."

Diet: Healthy Eating Reduces Premature Death. Just a small improvement in diet over the long-term may significantly
lower oneβs risk for an early death. In a recent study, researchers analyzed the association between changes in diet quality
and the risk of dying among almost 74,000 adults over a twelve-year period. They found that participants who consumed
more whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and fish, as well as less red and processed meats and sugary drinks had up to a
17% lower risk of dying during the course of the study. New England Journal of Medicine, July 2017
Exercise: Yoga Benefits Those with Lung Cancer Too! In a new study, researchers assigned 26 advanced lung cancer
patients to either yoga classes or a waitlist for future yoga instruction to serve as a control group. Following the
intervention, they found that the patients who practiced yoga had significantly better physical function, better stamina to
perform work or daily activities, and improved mental health than those in the control group.

Chiropractic: Risk Factors for Episodic Neck Pain⦠French researchers followed 3,710 workers from a variety of
industries for five years and found that 10.4% of the men and 14.6% of the women in the study developed episodic neck
pain during the course of the study. The research team notes that two factors they identified that increased the risk for
episodic neck pain among participants included a high physical workload and working in awkward postures.

Wellness/Prevention: Vitamin Supplements May Slow Macular Degeneration? Vitamin and mineral supplements
may not prevent macular degeneration, but they may help slow its progression. A research review has found that macular
degeneration patients who took supplements that contained anti-oxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc had a
28% lower risk of progressing to late stage macular degeneration. Cochrane Collaboration, October 2017
