Mental Attitude: Humans Can't Resist Puppy-Dog Eyes. Japanese scientists have found that the same hormone responsible for
helping mothers bond to their infants, oxytocin, is also produced in both dogs and their owners when they maintain eye contact. Dr.
Greg Nelson, director of surgery and diagnostic imaging at Central Veterinary Associates in Valley Stream, New York adds,
"Certainly, people who suggest their dog is part of the family are probably quite right. A dog is not merely a housed animal that
accepts food from us and tries to cohabitate. Rather, they have a relationship more as a parent and child or peer to peer."

Health Alert: Electronic Cigarette Use Rapidly Increasing Among Adolescents. A new report reveals that the use of e-cigarettes
among middle and high school students increased three-fold between 2013 and 2014. As a result, the use of e-cigarettes in this
population has exceeded the use of all other tobacco products, including conventional cigarettes. Dr. Tom Frieden, the director of the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) adds, "We're concerned that there are multiple aspects of e-cigarette use that are
concerning that includes addiction to nicotine, effects on the developing brain, and the significant likelihood that a proportion of those
who are using e-cigarettes will go on to use combustible cigarettes… Hard-hitting ads about tobacco need to continue and we need to
ensure that programs like minimum age requirements for purchase of e-cigarettes and comprehensive tobacco control programs are

Exercise: Cardiorespiratory Fitness Decreases Disease Risk in Smokers. Patients with metabolic syndrome have an increased risk
for heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. According to a new report, the risk for metabolic syndrome is lower among smokers with
above-average fitness levels. In the study, the most-fit smokers had a 48% lower risk for metabolic syndrome than participants with
the lowest fitness levels. Even those with moderate fitness levels had a 27% lower risk for metabolic syndrome when compared with
the least-fit study participants. Lead author Dr. Darla Kendzor writes, "While [this study's] findings emphasize that fitness plays a
protective role against cardiovascular disease even among smokers, the research emphasizes the importance of quitting smoking to

in the hospital work environment, in 2011 the state of California enacted a law requiring hospitals to implement safe patient-handling
policies and programs designed to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury among nurses and other hospital staff. In hospitals that
adopted policies requiring a team approach to lifting patients vs. allowing nurses to first attempt the task on their own, researchers

Wellness/Prevention: New Test Could Give Early Breast Cancer Warning. Danish researchers claim they have created a blood
test that can detect the presence of certain proteins in the blood believed to precede breast cancer development by two to five years.
Study leader Dr. Lars Ove Dragsted adds, "The potential is that we can detect a disease like breast cancer much earlier than today.
