The first steamboat, which came to be known as the Clermont, was constructed by Robert Fulton in
1807. This development in transportation was huge. People could now ride rivers upstream as well

The first half of Life on the Mississippi was ideally written and reading the extremely detailed and
captivating account of Twain's apprenticeship was quite enjoyable. However, the second part of the
book was not as fascinating. The short stories were frequently only two pages long and were not
very well connected to be a clear read. Though a few of the characters Twain met on his journey
were quite interesting, the majority of them merely served as an example of a certain characteristic
which he wished to further discuss. This may be due to the fact that Twain was much older by the
time he made the trip in the second half of the book, and he had grown aware of the various faults of
humanity and thus wrote more analytically and critically than he did in the first half to reflect his
change in character and the change of the times he lived in.
Judging from his detailed account of the settings, Mark Twain may have written Life on the
Mississippi in order to document and preserve the steamboat way of life, which was soon to
disappear. It is different from other books of this period because Twain was an extremely talented
writer, and his uncommonly regional approach to documenting the speech and habits of the people

with a smaller barrel containing a 150 lb charge of gunpowder (Thomas). The Turtle's task was a

York harbor (Thomas). In the end, the Turtle was deemed unsuccessful and the project was
abandoned. Years later Robert Fulton, with the knowledge of Bushnell's work, saw the torpedo as

The steamboating trade was entirely dependent on the weather which would dictate the rise and fall
of water levels and as such it was a seasonal trade. In the upper Mississippi where winter would bite
hard, rivers would freeze over for at least four months out of every year, if not longer. The ice was
not just a concern during the winter months though. When rising waters and breaking ice occurred
in early spring, it created floating hazards, which were known to cause appalling damage to vessels.
The ice would puncture the hull of a vessel like it was made of so much tissue paper and floating
masses of ice were also known to crush steamboats. As such it was not uncommon for dozens of
boats to be lost in a single year.
Captains would often weigh this risk though, leaving too early could mean damage to the vessel but
it also meant more lead and other valuable cargo would be available as the season started.
Passengers that were stranded during the winter months would often pay inflated rates during early
spring due to the lack of competition. Raw materials also fetched a higher price after the winter
months, this meant that miners were often eager to see their minerals to market to benefit from the

Growing up, I had no idea that I was part of a race. My surroundings were mostly white, the snow,

racialized other. This is reflected in the population of Steamboat, where 89% of the population is

Her work concerning the environmental racism in Los Angeles discusses white privilege and how it
functions on a systematic level (Pulido). Race is one of those social myths that we've been told for
so long that it has become a social reality, one that is situated throughout academic, political, social,

The Antebellum period is known as the period before the Civil War. However, it is described as the
periods between the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The word e "antebellum," means before the war,
and "reform," means the improvement of what is wrong. The Antebellum period made
transportation more efficient for people who traveled. The Transportation Revolution provided
several new, reliable, safe and cost–effective ways to travel to different parts of the nation, including
