2. KERRANG – ROCK/INDIE/ALTERNATIVE MAGAZINE
The first impression of the magazine is that it is a rock music magazine, you get the feel for
this as it is quite dark and bold, this would suggest a „heaviness‟ to the magazine, which is the
genre of music it is about.
There is a picture of a band inset into the front of the magazine and they are surrounded by
what the magazine includes this would suggest that the magazine has a large coverage of the
band because they are surrounded by all the information and what is included in the
magazine.
The pictures featured on the front of the magazine of the various bands and artist included in the magazine, all the people
pictured all appear to be looking at you as they are looking straight into the camera. This is a technique used by many
magazine producers as it entices the target audience to purchase the magazine it does this by making you feel as though the
artist is looking at you and connecting with you.
There appears to be a set colour scheme for the magazine, as a reader when you first view the magazine you get
this impression because all the writing, background colours and even the pictures to a certain extent have a
rather black and white look about them and then the information the magazine wants to stand out is in a
contrasting colour or on a background.
These are separate headings for the cover of the magazine. They include what the magazine has to offer
so to attract readers.
“Poster Mag” “PLUS 45 stickers” – the fact that the word “plus” is in bold and capital letters so to stand
out gives the reader the impression that it is an added extra for this magazine and attracts you to
purchase it.
3. I BELIEVE THAT THE MAGAZINE SUCCESSFULLY CREATES A FEEL FOR THE “ROCK” THEME AND DRAWS THE
READERS ATTENTION TO THE MAGAZINE. I LIKE THE WAY THAT THE TEXT IS CONTRASTED ON THE MAGAZINE,
FOR EXAMPLE, THE WHITE TEXT “PARAMORE” ON THE BLACK BACKGROUND WORKS REALLY WELL. HOWEVER
I DO BELIEVE THAT THE LAYOUT OF THE MAGAZINE FRONT COVER COULD BE IMPROVED AND THE USE OF
COLOUR.
I THINK THAT IF THEY HAD USED BOLDER COLOURS OTHER THAN THE USUAL BLACK AND WHITE THE
MAGAZINE WOULD STAND OUT AMONGST OTHER MAGAZINES, ESPECIALLY IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY READ
THE MAGAZINE YOU COULD BE PUT OFF BY THE DULLNESS AND LACK OF COLOUR.
