In 2015, less than 26% of college students devoted some amount of their time to volunteer,
according to the Corporation for National and Community Service(VCLA). That means that three
out of four college students did not give any amount of their time to help others through
volunteering. However, there are hundreds of case studies that prove that volunteering not only
helps the person receiving the service––but also the volunteer; this is a mutualistic situation and
people are in need. Just by giving an hour every month or so, the volunteer can help make people's
lives better. Volunteering benefits both the volunteer and the person or people receiving the

On February 17, 2017, my partner and I visited the Eagle's Nest pantry located near the entrance of
Seymour's. I have been at the University of Southern Mississippi for four years now and had no clue
that this campus afford food assistance to those in need. My belief for not knowing the pantry
existed is because of its location. When I approached the door, I felt like I was about to enter a
student restricted storage room; there were no visible signs indicating that it was a student approved
food assistance program. Once I entered, I was greeted by a team of Interim and undergraduate

The third consumer was an international student as well but was eager to conduct the interview. We
noticed while making his food selections, he, without hesitations skipped over the vegetables
sections. That made me believe he was a repeating guest. When we went to complete his interview I
asked him did he purposely skip the vegetables and he said yes because he was not fund of green
peas. After completing the interview, his response to the questions summed up that he was grateful
to have the food pantry because it provided him with food in his time of need. Basically all the

Introduction Throughout the semester, I have been able to volunteer for the American Red Cross
Disaster Services Team. This has been one of the most beneficial volunteer opportunities that I have
ever accomplished. As an American Red Cross of Georgia Major Gift Officer, this volunteer
experience allowed me to gain knowledge in a department that serves as the backbone of the
American Red Cross. As a nonprofit fundraiser, it is difficult to truly see the mission that your team
raises money for every single day. Fundraisers at the American Red Cross are trained as "sales
people," and before this volunteer experience I had never even been on a Red Cross disaster
response call. Throughout the duration of the semester, I was able to gain true insight into the core
of the organization and mission. This opportunity allowed me to not only enhance my career at the
American Red Cross, but gave me a 360–degree view of the entire organization and the
fundamentals of the Red Cross mission.

In July and August of 2012, I volunteered with the Nepal Volunteers Council1 for a month in
Kathmandu, Nepal, and I found that despite the NVC hired many international volunteers who
contribute a considerable amount of money to the organization, it did not disclose to any volunteer
its source of funding or where and how much was the money spent. Later on, I was informed that
there was actually a board which provides the major funding for the NVC, implying that the
organization was not as responsible for the international volunteers as I expected. However,
international volunteers are one of the most important stake holders in the perspective of this
organization and a transparent environment is important for the sustainability of the NVC in terms
of the recruitment of volunteers.
The Issue
Nepal Volunteers Council (NVC) is a non–profit organization affiliated to the Social Welfare
Council and it offers volunteer, internship programs. The objective of the NVC is to continue the
process of sustainable development and uplifting the life standard of the poor and the marginalized
community through national and international volunteer enlistment.
To volunteer with NVC, each volunteer needs to pay a not refundable $100 application fee at the
beginning of the applying process, and the program fee is $195 for the first week and $75 for every

Francisco Franco. On the 18th of July 1936 Generals of the Spanish Army led a coup against the
democratically elected
Popular Front government of Spain. Within days, the country was plunged into one of the bloodiest
wars the world had ever seen, with the Republicans battling the insurgent Nationalists for control of
the country. The Nationalists were fascist in principle, and therefore received massive amounts of
aid from Hitler and
Mussolini as a result of their shared ideology. The rest of the world turned their back on Spain and
signed the nonintervention act, which constituted a series of agreements limiting foreign
involvement in the Spanish Civil War. The Republicans were communist and received a limited

Union. However, their main source of aid did not originate from a single power, but from a group of

Regional United FC is a comprehensive soccer club based in Dooradoyle, Limerick. It was founded
in 1974 by 2 men named Seamus Ryan & Lorcan Harney. The idea for the soccer club came about
as these 2 men saw a growing need for a soccer club in an ever expanding urban area. The only
other club serving the region was Mungret Regional FC which had been founded 3 years previously
in 1971.The club is run entirely through volunteers. Regional United grew very steadily since its

St Marys holds an Inspire Science Program advocating the learning of science for primary children
(year 6 ). It was a day spent in a local primary school teaching them about DNA and Forensic
science.
The Inspire Science program involved having weekly basis school meetings in the science labs. I
attended each week working on preparing for science–related activities such as making DNA,
chromosomes from strawberries and creating a DNA model. The class was split into groups of 8
each group assigned to a classroom for the day. Furthermore splitting into pairs to work with a group
of 6 children. I lead my group teaching them interesting facts about science and how science is
involved in everyday life. I monitored my group as we worked on a forensic worksheet, DNA
booklet and DNA/ dry ice experiments. This activity increased my confidence in teaching others and
being able to involve myself in a community activity.
I participate in school clubs such as Amnesty and Girl's Club, which are social justice clubs in my

apart of our everyday lives. When you think of technology you mostly think about how it has helped

shape our society. In the book Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman he shows his concern
for how this all can effect as as a people. He does this by using three popular persuasive literary
devices to help convey his message to the reader. The three devices being: Pathos, Logos and Ethos.
All of these are used many times throughout the book,with their own effects. Logos, is the appeal to
logic. When using this device you are using logical reasoning to help appeal to the reader.This also
includes pulling facts, statics and citing other credible sources to use. The next one is Ethos, which
is showing that the author is a credible source, and is well aware of what he is talking about. Lastly
is Pathos, this is when you appeal to one's emotion to get their attention. In this book Postman does

Venezuela are also quickly reaching groundbreaking levels of economic empowerment under the
administration of President Chávez. The new Constitution set out important legal measures,
including a donation to women who work at home, eligible for social security benefits. A key factor
in the support of women's participation towards the economy is institutions. For example, Banmujer,
the Women's Development Bank of Venezuela, is the only national financial institution of its kind.
Banmujer gives small, low–interest loans to women in order to help them form businesses. The
goals of the bank are to create employment and reduce poverty among women, encourage women's
participation in the economic and social transformations that are taking place as part of Venezuela's
Bolivarian Revolution. Banmujer was established in honor of International Women's Day. On the

Change Mindset The first thing that needs to change is the professional nursing mindset of taking
the break that they are entitled to. Nurses tend to feel that it is uncommon, unnecessary, and even
wrong to take a break. Like one nurse put it: "...We don't always say, okay, go. Because they've got
the old Catholic guilt that nurses get embedded into them as part of the military training we go
through" (Happell et al., 2013, p. 644). Nurses need to realize that they are only hurting themselves
and the patients they think they are helping by not taking breaks. Leaders play a role in helping
identify the issue and using management skills to guide the unit into a healthier and more positive
mindset (Brunges & Foley–Brinza, 2014).
Communication
To assess if there is a problem with the current setup, nurse managers and leaders can try to gauge
employee satisfaction with surveys. If nurses indicate a problem with not getting their entitled break,
then action should be taken. Communication is key so meetings can be called to try to brainstorm
what the problem is i.e. are there too many patients or is there not enough coverage?
Communication should be encouraged and suggestions and problems be brought to management
attention. This can be stimulated with monthly unit meetings, having an open door policy, or even a

Persuasive Literary Devices In Could We Be Amusing...
Could We Be Amusing Ourselves to Death?
The evolution of technology has become indescribable. Technology is prevalent in our society, as
well as its portrayal in the media, a seemingly essential aspect of our everyday lives. Although many
idolize how technology has improved our lives, many fail to recognize technology's faults. By using
three persuasive literary devices (pathos, logos, and ethos), Neil Postman expresses his concern for
technological advancement and possible failure in the book Amusing Ourselves to Death. Logos
appeals to logic; when using a persuasive device such as logos, you are using logical reasoning to
appeal to the reader. When using logos, you must include facts, statistics, and citing credible
sources. By using ethos, the author conveys his ideas while being well aware of what he is talking
about by utilizing credible sources. Pathos, however, conveys the author's ideas by appealing to the
reader's emotions. Postman does an outstanding job of orchestrating a piece using the most popular
persuasive elements. Postman was able to incorporate all three of these devices into his book, but
the most prominent one in my opinion, and that helps to best convey Postman's point, is logos;
statistics and facts are two things you very rarely can fight against. Over and over Postman uses
facts on how the media is basically dumbing us down. For example, Postman pointed out that with
the rise of the televised age there was then a decrease in literacy.
