1. How did you use media
technologies in the construction
and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
Evaluation Question 4
2. Skills developed
• I have developed many skills during making my projects from using
software and learning to use a HD camcorder.
3. SOFTWARE
• To make my film I had to use Final cut pro a programme I wasn’t completely familiar with but I had used
slightly similar programmes. Learnt how to trim clips, fade add music and sound clips. The main challenge for
me was using special effects to adding speech and thought bubbles. This was tricky because I had to use
Photoshop a programme I hadn’t used before I had to get a picture of speech bubbles crop out all edges
around the image so only what I wanted would show up on the film. After editing the picture with text I had
to then change how long the speech bubbles would appear on screen. This was a very long process as I had
to constantly go back and forth from Photoshop to final cut as I need to change text in the bubbles each
time then resize and change direct according to each character. I believe it paid off because it gave me the
freedom to change speech when ever I wanted if I didn’t like something I could go back and edit it to
improve it.
• For making my film poster I used Photoshop. The skills required for making the poster I had to learn from
YouTube tutorials. I learnt how to use masking, trimming using refine edge tools, how to properly resize and
image and colour correcting. All these skills I learnt helped me create my poster which I believe a good
representation for the film.
• I used Photoshop to make my film review as well my teacher suggested that I should use Indesign but wasn’t
familiar with it and I felt I could produce a better looking review on photoshop as I was more comfortable
using it after I made the film poster. I used empire magazine to reference my review.
4. Research & Planning
• I used prezi to present most of my research and planning I was a more interesting
way to present my ideas and made it more easier to understand.
• For research I used youtube and BBC’s website to look at short films. the BBC’s
films were more useful as they showed all directors actors pot ratting etc. it was
easier to do more research into each film. It was easy to search for specific types
of film e.g. by genre, length and director.
• Doing research for film magazine review was more difficult as to cant really get
any online I used empire magazine to research on review and learnt about
layouts and language used in reviews.
• Doing research for film posters was slightly difficult because it was difficult to find
films that had a similar storyline. But I found a couple which I thought the
individual charters relates e.g in I love you beth cooper, denis has a similar
character profile at school as Alex did in my film.
5. Cameras
I learnt how to use cameras more because in my AS piece I was the
director only and the filming was done by the other people in my
group. This year I had to be more independent and direct and film by
my self. Filming was a difficult job because I was shooting during
daytimes when lots of people are walking past and it made it difficult to
shoot. Because the weather was quite sunny I had to try shoot without
getting glare on the camera. I used a piece of paper to act as a sun
shade but I couldn’t doo this in all the clips because the paper would
show up on camera. Another difficult aspect to film was when I was
doing the panning shot when the bus appears. My hands aren’t very
steady even with the tripod but I still managed to produce a great shot.
