The Microeconomics of the Video Game Industry Essay

The Microeconomics of the Video Game Industry Video games have been around for years with many different types of consoles and games. The
video game industry has grown into a $20 billion dollar industry over the past ten years, and it only shows signs of growing larger in the years to come.
In the United States alone, the market has grown considerably where 60% of all Americans play video games, 40% are women, and 60% of all gamers
are between the ages of 25 through 44 years old (games–advertising.com). According to an article on Gamespot.com, analysts estimate that the video
game category will have about 50 to 55 more square feet of shelve space in Best Buy by the year 2007. The video game ... Show more content on

Stores immediately sold out the day the Xbox 360 came out. According to Wikipedia.org, "Microsoft was not able to supply enough systems to meet
initial consumer demand in Europe or North America. Many potential customers were not able to purchase a console at launch and the lack of
availability led to Xbox 360 bundles selling on eBay at grossly inflated prices, with some auctions exceeding $6,000. It was reported that 40,000 units
appeared on eBay during the initial month of release, which would mean that 10% of the total supply was resold. By year's end, Microsoft had sold
1.5 million units; including 900,000 in North America, 500,000 in Europe, and 100,000 in Japan." Another example of this tactic being used is with
the release of Nintendo's Wii. A total of four million Wii consoles were to be released worldwide with the majority of that number going to North
America alone. On November 19 of this year, the consoles sold out immediately. Some stores passed out cards for the console to people who were in
line the night before. Circuit City had people camping out early in the day, but gave out tickets to people later in the evening. They even had a sign
that stated they only had thirty Nintendo Wii's, yet people were still hopeful and stubbornly stood in line. Sony's Playstation 3 was released on
November 17, 2006 with an even shorter supply than the Nintendo Wii; some consumers camped outside of the

(Yahoo Finance, 2013). Figure 1 Figure 2 (Parker, 2013) (D'Angelo, 2013) 3 Threat of New Entrants The three dominant players have taken the early
mover advantage to grow their businesses. High level of adoption and efficient production are essential in this industry because consoles are
traditionally sold at a loss and revenues are made up by licensing games to developers. This makes it very a difficult industry for new entrants. New
technology incurs high cost of capital in research and development (R&D) and low product differentiation requires advertising and marketing. Their
brand establishment, together with their capabilities to make high investments in required fields have helped the three firms to gain industry specific
expertise, fast paced technological capability, and strong brand loyalty which keep the threat of new entrants moderately low (Wingfield, 2013). Power
of Suppliers Each firm generates revenues from the profit margins on hardware (gaming consoles) and software (game) sales, both suppliers are
therefore integral. Suppliers of the main hardware components, such as AMD and Foxconn, supply to all three companies but also to other industries
e.g. for personal computers and smartphones. While not solely dependent on the industry, gaming currently represent the majority of

The Indian video games sector in 2011 was driven by the urban middle class/upper–middle class population, who adopted both static and handheld

as growth in retail chains were primary factors driving the demand for video games in India.

Responding to the Wii Group Case Writeup

In the Harvard Business Review case Responding to the Wii, Kazuo Hirai was faced with an interesting dilemma. Hirai, the chief executive of Sony
Computer Entertainment Inc. faced pressure due to Sony's Playstation 3 video game console losing market share to the Nintendo Wii. Hirai faced a
major business decision in deciding how Sony should respond to the cheaper, more interactive, family oriented Nintendo Wii.
The Video Game Industry at a Glance
From an industry analysis standpoint, the videogame console industry in 2008 was not very attractive. The industry was, and still is, structured as an
oligopoly in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is especially prevalent within the companies that own the majority of the market share. While continuous improvement is necessary on current
products, it is also crucial to be bold and thinking outside of the box.
As mentioned, the common theme across the video game industry has been creating an innovative product and then simply improving the system over
time. While that has been proven to work in instances in the past, there is a lot to learn from the creation of Nintendo's Wii. Nintendo, like the rest of
the company's used the same ideology of continuing improvements to an already developed product until they took a bold move of introducing a
whole new game console. When Nintendo introduced the Wii, they took a risk because it was not similar to their previous game consoles. They saw an
opportunity to bring something new to the video game industry that could create value to not only the originally targeted market, but also a much
larger market.
The Nintendo Wii is a prime example of how a company can serve their already targeted market and also see the opportunity to expand into additional
segments. Much of Wii's success was due to the fact that it appealed to a large audience. Nintendo gained a market advantage as 'first movers' in this
new era of technological and conceptual change in the video game industry. The now enabled users to be more active and engaged which
revolutionized the way consumers thought about gaming systems.

It allows a player to turn and tilt in three–dimensional space to steer driving or flying games. Although I have yet to experience this, I bet that it could
be very fun and interesting. It is lighter than the previous controllers for Playstation and Playstation2. There is only one controller present when
purchasing the console, but for a second controller it cost $50. So if you get bored playing alone there is room for others to play. The console supports
up to seven players at a time. And if that's not enough, join online gamers through the Gigabit Ethernet.
Yeah that's right! You can play, chat, message, or even shop at the specialty gaming stores online with the Gigabit Ethernet. Similar to the PS2,
Sony has made this service available on the PS3. The difference between the two is that there is more to offer on the PS3's Ethernet service then
the PS2's Ethernet service. It is also considered faster to connection then the PS2. So if you enjoy playing sport games or army games, Ethernet
makes it way more fun. Instead of playing the same people or computer over and over again, play millions of others from across the world online. I
have join many groups playing Rainbow Six (strategic army game) and NCAA 09 (college football game). I have played with and against people from

Xbox One X Persuasive Essay
There has been a heated debate for many years around which console was superior. Both the Xbox One X and the PlayStation 4 Pro have been the
leading contenders for the majority of the debate. To close the debate and finally crown a console the greatest, both Microsoft and Sony took giant

Microsoft promised the gaming community a gaming console that would exceed expectations, reality, and the competition. Together in the journey, we

If you've never touched a video game controller in your life, but do have avid players in your household, you may be in for a bewildering month.
That's because we're on the verge of what the gaming industry excitedly calls 'a new console generation'. In short, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, once
the most powerful games machines on the planet are being replaced – the former by the Xbox One, the latter by the PlayStation 4 (PS4).
All you really need to know is that both the PS4 and the Xbox One represent a significant leap over their predecessors. Some people in the industry are
suggesting that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both offer advanced online functionality. The use of cloud computing, which connects your console to remote servers on the internet, may mean we
see a new era of games which have huge online worlds that players can explore together, and that seamlessly grow and evolve over time. We may see
game processing tasks like physics and artificial intelligence being 'outsourced' to the cloud, meaning we see much more advanced simulations and
life–like computer–controlled enemies. It's a truly exciting time.
Right now, it looks like PS4 is the most powerful console, but developers may well learn to exploit the Xbox One in new ways. It's unlikely you'll be
making your buying decision on hardware specifications alone.
Xbox One and PS4 are promising lots of entertainment options that will let you watch movies and listen to music on your console, as well as playing
games. They both have deals with video–on–demand providers like LoveFilm and Netflix, and there will be "free" TV services like YouTube, iPlayer
and 4oD.
Right now, Microsoft seems more ambitious in this area. It has been showing off how you'll be able to connect your cable or satellite set–top box to
Xbox One, letting you control your live TV viewing pleasure through your console and also adding new social and interactive features to the
experience. However, right now, a lot of those options are only

Video Gameplay Of The Games Consoles
The industry that I have chosen to analyse within this essay is Games Consoles; this particular industry was chosen because I have a personal
interest and knowledge of the market, which I believe, will help me towards analysing it. The Games consoles industry includes both static and
portable consoles, static consoles being devices which are played through a television as opposed to portable devices which can be played on phones
and tablets. According to (Mintel 2014) there is currently a 'big three ' who dominate the static games consoles – Xbox, PlayStation and Wii. All three
of these games consoles are owned by separate companies. Xbox is developed by Microsoft, PlayStation developed by Sony and Wii developed by
Nintendo. Currently within the market there are two consoles for each of Xbox and PlayStation, as 2014 sees the first year that the Xbox One and
PlayStation 4 have been on sale since it was released in November 2013. These join the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles which have now been on
the market for many years. In the diagram below on the left from (Mintel 2014) by VGChartz we can see it illustrates that the big three currently
control 100% of the static console industry with Xbox having a market share of 44%, PlayStation 47% and Wii 9%. Although as we can see above to
the left Nintendo is in much difficulty within the static console market with its Wii and Wii U consoles, the company still dominates the portable
console market. The market includes two

1. What, if anything, should Sony do to turn around the sales of the PS3? * Instead of focusing on one particular target segment (18 to 35 year–old
male gamers with above average–education and high degree of comfort with new technology) further target segments should also be focused (e.g.
women, children, occasional gamers and non–gamers). Some of the further customers require games which are easy to play because they have a low

With the video game industry being the fastest growing sector of the growing entertainment industry, the industry's revenue has now reached $26
billion in annual revenue and there is currently no indication of decline in the industry. So, in order to identify how the revenue is distributed, it's
essential to look at the supply chain of the entire PS3 business. As seen in the supply chain, there are opportunities in many aspects of the console
business, coming from the actual console sales as well as extras such as games.

5.3 Business Models
There are several business models contributing to the revenue income for the PS3. Obviously, sales of the actual console initially generate the
biggest revenue. But, as reported by several news agencies, Sony actually makes a loss on each console bought by a consumer. [26] As reported by
several sources, a PS3 costs between $725 and $905 to manufacture, but is sold for $599 in the US market. The reason for the high manufacturing
price is the high cost of components such as the Blu–Ray DVD, XDR memory etc. (More on that chapter 8).
To support several streams of revenue there are three business models for distribution supported by the PS3. Since the console is making a loss per
sold unit, there are other ways for Sony to catch up on the income and make a profit in the console business through other business models. The
business models are:
However, comparing the business models for the PS3 tells us that there are several possible models for generating revenue and profit for the console.

There is no though that the Playstation 2 shows well and has improved since the Playstation. Yet thePlaystation 3 has really taken it to another level

The Playstation 2 allowed DVD's to play in the console, but it has nothing on the PS3's play of DVD's. The PS3 is able to play DVD's and also
Blu–ray DVD's. With Blu–ray DVD's you are able to receive a more crisp and sharp image quality. There is more depth and more details that are

How Micro Transactions Can Use For Play And Paid Games Are...
Micro–transactions
Background
The use of micro–transactions in free to play and paid games are the norm nowadays. The different types of micro–transactions in games can range
from simple color changes, buffs, buying items, and account transfers. The concept behind micro–transactions is to let the consumer choose what they
want, and it lets the developer earn extra money on the side. The problem with using micro–transaction in games is that the developers will stop
making good games, and instead make games revolve around the necessity of using micro–transactions (Rybicki, 2006).
Revenue
The amount of money a free to play game earns will shock most people. According to SuperData, a marketing intelligence firm, Riot Games in 2013
earned $624 million from League of Legends (Jarvey, 2014). League of Legends is a free to play game that has micro–transaction. The appeal of
generating money through micro–transactions in gaming are stronger than ever with profits reported by the likes of Riot Games. The following chart

Compare And Contrast Playstation Vs Xbox
Playstation vs Xbox: which is better? "What started as a simple two horse race between the PS4 and Xbox One back in 2013 now consists of a
massive six different pieces of hardware (Matt and Jon)." The Xbox is a gamer console that is fighting against Playstation over the best selling. Based
on statistics the Xbox One has taken the lead for the past 2 years over the PS4. Sony's PS4 is trying to beat the Xbox on everything that they can.
Overall, Xbox is better than Playstation because they have better graphics in gaming, cheap, and better entertainment.
First of all, in these two amazing products we can contrast their best features. The 4K, which in consumer terms means a resolution of 3,840 x
2,160 pixels, has long been familiar for movies and TV shows and is now appearing as the default on most new gaming hardware. Consumers are

PS4 Situational Analysis
INTRODUCTION: Sony is a Japan based company that operates in over 180 countries worldwide. (Company Profile for Sony Corporation, 2011) Sony
was co–founded by Masaru Ibuka and Aki Miruta in 1946 and since then has grown into an international multimillion dollar company (Sony
Corporation, 2014). Ibuka and Miruta originally started out manufacturing measuring equipment (Sony Corporation, 2014), and have expanded into
more complex technological solutions, such as laptops, gaming consoles, and communications devices. One product in particular is the PlayStation 4.
The PS4 is the most recent of Sony's gaming consoles and since its release at the end of 2013 has sold 7 million units (Plafke, 2013), raking in 45

The company is competing with Microsoft in the computer and gaming consoles product area, then with Panasonic in the television and music
department and with LG's communications products. A second threat Sony faces relates to most of its production being in Japan. The company is
susceptible to a fluctuating currency rate. For example the Japanese Yen has been steadily rising against both the US dollar and the Euro since
November 2013 and experienced a 5% increase against the US dollar in December 2013. (OANDA, 2014). This made Sony's imports to these
countries from Japan seem relatively more expensive than products made locally. Another threat Sony faces is one relating to the specific product
being discussed in this report. Recently the PS4 network was hacked, allowing users' credit card details and other private information to be taken.
(MacManus, 2012). Being vulnerable to attacks from hackers is a very big threat for the Sony Corporation. Opportunities: The Sony brand has been
given many opportunities. One of these is that Blu–ray is become increasingly more popular, which gives Sony the opportunity to make these players as
cheaply and efficiently as they can. A second opportunity is their partnership with the big gaming franchise Fifa. This enhances Sony's corporate value.
Weaknesses: One weakness of the Sony Corporation is its location. Almost its entire manufacturing takes

Xbox's are rather interesting pieces of machinery don't you think? They let us play games, enjoy movies,

Lets discuss the graphics and price difference first. While some would call it expensive the Xbox–one if

Play Station is better than Xbox. PlayStation has always been the best selling console. Even the original ps1 sold more the Xbox one ever did. All 4
PlayStations are ranked in the top 10 most sold consoles of all time. The ps2 was even the most sold console of all time with 158 million sales.
Another reason that PlayStation is better is that it has better graphics. The ps1,2,and 3 all had better graphics than the Xbox and Xbox 360. The ps4 and

Threat of new Entrants:
The possibility that there will be a new entrant into the game –console industry is quite unlikely, for many reasons. The technological know –how is
quite high, and would require significant capital to invest into, in order to be able to compete with current competitors; the fixed costs to produce such
consoles would also be quite high (When
Sony first launched the PS3 the manufacturing costs amounted to roughly 800 USD per unit, meaning Sony had to accept losses on each console
sold. Now however they managed to reduce the costs by 50%)8. Sony also holds an impressive portfolio of patents, which would make it hard for any
new comer to compete without making some sort of arrangement with Sony.9 Since the PlayStation brand has been around for over fifteen years, Sony
has the advantage of long –term branding as well as high customer loyalty towards their brand.10 Therefore the threat of new entrants is: Relatively
Low.
Rivalry within Industry:
As there are currently three companies in the game –console market, the industry growth rate is quite low, however now with the threat of mobile
gaming , this rate has slowed down even more, reaching a saturation point in 2009. 11

Persuasive Essay On Ps4 Vs Xbox 1
PS4 vs. Xbox 1
Did you know that the PlayStation 4 (PS4) outsold the Xbox 1 by 2:1? That may not seem like a lot now, but the actual amount of units sold are
22.3:12.8 (Million)! That's a big difference. The company that makes the PS4 is Sony. The PS4 is a slim console that is black and costs $400. The
PS4 is the better console because it is a better quality console, it has exclusive DLC and bonus content for free, and PlayStation Plus is a must have.
First of all, the PS4 is a quality console because it is sleek and light compared to the Xbox 1. While PS4 weighs 6.17 pounds, Xbox 1 weighs a
whopping 17.3 pounds! Not only that PS4 is slimmer compared to the big bulky box that is Xbox (Techradar 1). Another reason PS4 is higher
quality is because the graphics and processing speed of the PS4 is better. The graphics is the quality and details in the game. While the difference
isn't obvious, you can see the slight difference side by side. The processing power is the flow and speed that the console has. It also means faster
download times (Techradar 3). So the PS4 is slimmer and lighter and it has higher processing speed and graphics compared to the Xbox 1. ... Show

Xbox 4 Vs Xbox One The Showdown
PlayStation 4 vs Xbox One the Showdown Shigeru once said, "The Obvious objective of video games is to entertain people by surprising them
with new experiences." Since, the early 1990's, there has only been two heavy weight gaming consoles: PlayStation and Xbox. Over the years,
they both have tremendously evolved into impressive gaming consoles. A gaming console is a device which outputs a video image onto a screen.
The term "gaming console" is used to distinguish them from arcade machines and computers. Currently, the latest models are the PlayStation 4
(PS4) and Xbox One. Even though, the PS4 and Xbox One are both excellent gaming consoles. They do have a few differences such as price,
exclusive games, and exterior/interior design. When buying a gaming consoles, be prepared to spend a lump sum of cash. The PS4 used to cost
400 dollars since being first released back on November 14, 2013, but recently it has dropped down to 350 dollars. The Xbox One price has
fluctuated since first being released on November 22, 2013. When it first launched in the United States, the original price was 100 dollars more than
that of the PS4's original price of 400 dollars. In todays society, people or perhaps only me, tend to buy the cheaper options of things. So of course,
people brought the PS4 over the Xbox One. Microsoft must have thought their gaming console was far superior than Sony's gaming console so they
made it cost more. This action by Microsoft weakened the Xbox One sales. In

Psychological Aspects of Homosexuality
The Playstation 360
In today's entertainment market, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony dominate the interactive entertainment medium, with Macintosh's i–devices rapidly
cornering the handheld market. Now, if one was interested in owning a home video game console, they need to weigh the positives and negatives of
their options heavily because the current generation of home consoles is frightfully expensive and once you make your choice, you're virtually stuck

If any of the above descriptors apply to you then know that buying a 360 means supporting an American company, Microsoft.
Another exclusivity aspect to consider is the 360 and PS3's motion sensing systems. After the popularity and financial success of the Nintendo Wii,
Sony and Microsoft created motion sensing supplements to cash in on the family friendly party game crowd. The PS3 and 360's motion sensing
controller systems are more precise than the Wii's, but because they are supplements and don't come with the console, they increase the price for
access to a relatively small library of motion control based games. However the market is growing of course and the library shall also grow.
Between the PS3 and the 360, the PS3's motion sensing system is the most expensive. In order for the system to be effective you must by the motion
sensing wand and its navigation supplement as well as the camera to read the movements (Some single player games even require you to have two
wands.). Traditionally, if one is getting a motion sensing game they are getting party games or family games which require more controllers which
increases the price significantly, making the overall package more expensive than the already pricey 360's motion sensing camera the Kinect. After the
price, personal preference is all that matters. The

Marketing Analysis Of Sony Playstation 3
Introduction
I chose to conduct a marketing analysis on the Sony PlayStation 3 because it is a product that I am very familiar with. I have been a PlayStation
consumer since 1994 when the first PlayStation was established. Therefore, since I am a frequent consumer of this product, I have gained some
knowledge of this product over time. When an individual is a frequent consumer of a certain product, the consumer will eventually become aware or
at least have some knowledge of the marketing mix of that product. However, besides from being a dedicated consumer, I was also involved in
selling this product as a sales associate and this gave me some insight on the marketing mix of this product. As a sales associate, I also received some
training from marketers from the Sony Corporation on how to position the PlayStation 3 in an electronics store. Furthermore, I feel knowledgeable
about this product due to the exposure that I have had with it.

By growing their business operations, Sony has possessed the capacity to settle their income every year as they are not "over reliant on a specific item

Nintendo, The Oldest Video Game Company
Consider the situation faced by Nintendo, the oldest video–game company in the world. The company had positioned its line of developing good
games for all age stages and strongly opposed to violence and pornography. In 1985, shortly after the company's introduction of Nintendo Entertainment
System to the United States, Nintendo met its match when Japanese entertainment giant Sony and American tech behemoth Microsoft entered the
field with the PlayStation and Xbox. Despite the new competition, Nintendo still held strong. However, Sony and Microsoft had more resources to
produce advanced devices. Nintendo released Gamecube in 2001, however, the Xbox and Playstation 2 offered popular franchises, such as Final
Fantasy and Gran Turismo. At end of the year, The Gamecube just sold 7 million, and Playstation 2 sold 17 million. In 2006, Nintendo sold about 22
million Gamecubes, Microsoft sold about 25 million Xboxes, and Sony sold 150 million Playstation 2s. Clearly the result of that match–up showed that
Nintendo was the last place, as it was outsold by both of the other companies. Nintendo's share of the market and sales seemed likely to shrink in the
round of console. As this situation, how can Nintendo maintain their quality brand image and regain their lost market share, given limited funds for
advertising and sales promotion?

Nintendo's Wii Strategy
Nintendo has pursued a fundamentally different strategy and business model with the Wii console than that of its competitors, the Microsoft Xbox 360
and Sony PlayStation 3. The heart of Nintendo's strategy was the assumption that consoles do not necessarily require leading–edge power and
performance. This is a radical stance since the gaming industry traditionally competed on technological performance, graphic quality, and game realism:
factors valued primarily by die–hard gaming fans. Nintendo shifted its focus to providing a new form of player interaction targeted at a wider
demographic than the traditional avid game audience.
Nintendo's new business model has the following characteristics: 1) a shift from hardcore to casual gamers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Production costs can be high, there is a major learning curve, and access to distribution channels and inputs can also create challenges. In this
technological advancement driven industry, the possession of proprietary technology, partnerships with the best but cheapest suppliers can be
considered high barriers to new entrants. Once a game console is on the market, more money needs to be invested into games and accessories as well
as production due to the fact that most of the profits come from game sales rather than console sales.
From the economies of scale standpoint, given that both Microsoft and Sony had traditionally been operating at a loss in hopes of making significant
profit gains in software and game sales, even though both were taking steps to reduce their production costs later in 2008, a new entrant may need to
either enter on a large scale or accept a cost disadvantage and consequently lower profits.
The current three rivals are large global companies and put large amounts of resources into their consoles, indicating that a new and small firm would
find it extremely difficult to compete in the video game industry. Therefore, the threat of new entrants is relatively low.
Threat of Substitute Products – High
All three major players offer competitively priced products with similar features, as well as other forms of entertainment such as personal computers,
music, films, live events, and participation in sports. Therefore, the

Video Game And The Game
In November, 1971 the first commercially targeted video game was released in America as an arcade machine called 'Computer Space' in which
the aim of the game was to fly through 2D space avoiding UFO's firing upon you and destroying them. The game sold poorly and was notoriously
difficult to grasp as it was only played on university campuses. This however inspired other programmers to make more games and the following
year Atari released 'PONG' as an upright arcade machine, the aim of the games is to score points in a simulated tennis style match. It was the first
game to reach mainstream audience and is fairly well known within popular culture and subsequently went on to spawn a home edition of the game to
played on TV sets 3 years later. This generated larger sums of money as each of the 100,000+ arcade machines in America were generating between
$35–$40 a day and the home edition sold 150,000 units through the 1975 holiday season. This would mark the start of the gaming industry and in
the years to follow the industry would expand to Japan and Europe with year on year profits in the excess of $2 billion by 1982. It would survive
the video game crash of 1983 in which most of the American developers would become bankrupt because of lack of innovation and the flooded home
console market to name a few. Japan would emerge as the dominate market after the crash which in turn lead to the rise of Sega and Nintendo in 1989,
with the release of their own home consoles

Innate needs are 'biogenic' or 'physiological needs' which refer to needs such as air, food water, shelter, clothing etc. While acquired needs are those
we learn from our culture and surroundings, also known as 'psychological' or 'psychogenic needs' i.e. affection, power, learning, prestige and

Even though these are considered secondary needs, but they are as much as important as the innate or necessary needs. 'Achievers' seek to excel
and value continuous recognition of how well they are doing. Playing Wii games is an advanced way to make the user feel a sense of
achievement in a way that first it attracts the user to play, thrive to win and when one does the user walks out with a feeling of success and
achievement. Then there are the 'affiliation seekers' who look for company and relationships. Such a 'psychological need' is essential for an
individual, both for those who are outgoing and like to mingle, and for those who are shy or believe in close network. Nintendo games help people
connect and value relationships. It's an effective way not only for kids but also for adults, parents, workers etc. basically everyone. Who wouldn't

it suits all sorts of people and their psyche. For those who are 'power seekers' Wii games help them take control and achieve higher goals by

Why Do Gamers Buy the Video Games They Buy?
Video games might have started out as a very small market. But today, this market has grown even bigger than the movie or music industry. Each year,
millions and millions games fly off store shelves. Grand Theft Auto V broke sales records of the fastest selling entertainment property ever. While this
game and others such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Assassin's Creed sell millions of copies every year, other games don't sell so well and just sit in
store shelves. So, why do gamers rush out to stores to buy some games and pass by others? The answer is not so simple as "good games sell and bad
games don't." If this were the case, then a game like Persona 4, a critically acclaimed game, would have sold millions of units. While Call of ... Show

Word of Mouth advertising has the biggest impact on what gamers choose to buy out of all of these. This was shown by University of Southern

firms to attract customers to a new product or service. Penetration pricing is the practice of offering a low price for a new product or service during

become aware of the new product due to its lower price in the marketplace relative to rivals. It can often increase both market share and sales volume.

Analysis of Video Game Systems
The consumer video game systems offer an exciting opportunity to discuss and analyze the design of technology based on the strategy of each of the
players within the industry. We will focus our analysis on the next generation of video consoles: Nintendo's Wii, Microsoft'sXbox 360 and Sony
PlayStation 3 (PS3).
First, we will analyze the targeted customer and the proposition designed by each company to attract them. In this part, there is a description of each

Target Customers and Industry Proposition.
Microsoft introduced the new console (Xbox 360) one year before Sony, the industry leader, unleashed the PS3. Microsoft with the first mover
advantage built a large customer base and has the largest library of games. The PS3 console has the best raw power and blue–ray capabilities.
Nintendo, although with the less advanced console (Nintendo Wii), has successfully distinguished itself from their competitors with an innovative
controller whith motion–sensor capabilities.
Overall, the market response to these three consoles has been surprising. Nintendo Wii, has outsold its rivals and more surprisingly, Sony's PS2 has
outsold PS3. This has let Microsoft and Sony with the enormous challenge of competing with a rival possessing two key advantages: a lower cost
console and a product with a sound response in the market.
Both Sony and Microsoft focused their efforts on hard–core gamers and offering processing power and cutting–edge features to attract them. On the
other hand, Nintendo has been trying to attract new customers that traditionally are non–gamers. The

A Case Study With Sony On Penetration Pricing As Global Pricing Strategy Meaning of Penetration Pricing This is a marketing strategy used by
firms to attract customers to a new product or service. Penetration pricing is the practice of offering a low price for a new product or service during
its initial offering in order to attract customers away from competitors. The reasoning behind this marketing strategy is that customers will buy and
become aware of the new product due to its lower price in the marketplace relative to rivals. It can often increase both market share and sales volume.
Additionally, the high sales volume can also lead to lower production costs and higher inventory turnover, both of which are positive for any firm...

The Microeconomics Of The Video Game Industry Essay

  • 1. The Microeconomics of the Video Game Industry Essay Tommy Deen November 28, 2006 ECO 201 The Microeconomics of the Video Game Industry Video games have been around for years with many different types of consoles and games. The video game industry has grown into a $20 billion dollar industry over the past ten years, and it only shows signs of growing larger in the years to come. In the United States alone, the market has grown considerably where 60% of all Americans play video games, 40% are women, and 60% of all gamers are between the ages of 25 through 44 years old (games–advertising.com). According to an article on Gamespot.com, analysts estimate that the video game category will have about 50 to 55 more square feet of shelve space in Best Buy by the year 2007. The video game ... According to Wikipedia.org, "Microsoft was not able to supply enough systems to meet initial consumer demand in Europe or North America. Many potential customers were not able to purchase a console at launch and the lack of availability led to Xbox 360 bundles selling on eBay at grossly inflated prices, with some auctions exceeding $6,000. It was reported that 40,000 units appeared on eBay during the initial month of release, which would mean that 10% of the total supply was resold. By year's end, Microsoft had sold 1.5 million units; including 900,000 in North America, 500,000 in Europe, and 100,000 in Japan." Another example of this tactic being used is with the release of Nintendo's Wii. A total of four million Wii consoles were to be released worldwide with the majority of that number going to North America alone. On November 19 of this year, the consoles sold out immediately. Some stores passed out cards for the console to people who were in line the night before. Circuit City had people camping out early in the day, but gave out tickets to people later in the evening. They even had a sign that stated they only had thirty Nintendo Wii's, yet people were still hopeful and stubbornly stood in line. Sony's Playstation 3 was released on November 17, 2006 with an even shorter supply than the Nintendo Wii; some consumers camped outside of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Figure 1 Figure 2 (Parker, 2013) (D'Angelo, 2013) 3 Threat of New Entrants The three dominant players have taken the early mover advantage to grow their businesses. High level of adoption and efficient production are essential in this industry because consoles are traditionally sold at a loss and revenues are made up by licensing games to developers. This makes it very a difficult industry for new entrants. New technology incurs high cost of capital in research and development (R&D) and low product differentiation requires advertising and marketing. Their brand establishment, together with their capabilities to make high investments in required fields have helped the three firms to gain industry specific expertise, fast paced technological capability, and strong brand loyalty which keep the threat of new entrants moderately low (Wingfield, 2013). Power of Suppliers Each firm generates revenues from the profit margins on hardware (gaming consoles) and software (game) sales, both suppliers are therefore integral. Suppliers of the main hardware components, such as AMD and Foxconn, supply to all three companies but also to other industries e.g. for personal computers and smartphones. Hirai faced a major business decision in deciding how Sony should respond to the cheaper, more interactive, family oriented Nintendo Wii. While continuous improvement is necessary on current products, it is also crucial to be bold and thinking outside of the box. As mentioned, the common theme across the video game industry has been creating an innovative product and then simply improving the system over time. While that has been proven to work in instances in the past, there is a lot to learn from the creation of Nintendo's Wii. Nintendo, like the rest of the company's used the same ideology of continuing improvements to an already developed product until they took a bold move of introducing a whole new game console. When Nintendo introduced the Wii, they took a risk because it was not similar to their previous game consoles. They saw an opportunity to bring something new to the video game industry that could create value to not only the originally targeted market, but also a much larger market. The Nintendo Wii is a prime example of how a company can serve their already targeted market and also see the opportunity to expand into additional segments. Much of Wii's success was due to the fact that it appealed to a large audience. So if you get bored playing alone there is room for others to play. The console supports up to seven players at a time. And if that's not enough, join online gamers through the Gigabit Ethernet. Yeah that's right! You can play, chat, message, or even shop at the specialty gaming stores online with the Gigabit Ethernet. Similar to the PS2, Sony has made this service available on the PS3. The difference between the two is that there is more to offer on the PS3's Ethernet service then the PS2's Ethernet service. It is also considered faster to connection then the PS2. It's a truly exciting time. Right now, it looks like PS4 is the most powerful console, but developers may well learn to exploit the Xbox One in new ways. It's unlikely you'll be making your buying decision on hardware specifications alone. Xbox 4 Vs Xbox One The Showdown PlayStation 4 vs Xbox One the Showdown Shigeru once said, "The Obvious objective of video games is to entertain people by surprising them with new experiences." Since, the early 1990's, there has only been two heavy weight gaming consoles: PlayStation and Xbox. Over the years, they both have tremendously evolved into impressive gaming consoles. A gaming console is a device which outputs a video image onto a screen. The term "gaming console" is used to distinguish them from arcade machines and computers. Currently, the latest models are the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One. Even though, the PS4 and Xbox One are both excellent gaming consoles. In todays society, people or perhaps only me, tend to buy the cheaper options of things. So of course, people brought the PS4 over the Xbox One. Microsoft must have thought their gaming console was far superior than Sony's gaming console so they made it cost more. This action by Microsoft weakened the Xbox One sales. In ... If any of the above descriptors apply to you then know that buying a 360 means supporting an American company, Microsoft. Another exclusivity aspect to consider is the 360 and PS3's motion sensing systems. After the popularity and financial success of the Nintendo Wii, Sony and Microsoft created motion sensing supplements to cash in on the family friendly party game crowd. The PS3 and 360's motion sensing controller systems are more precise than the Wii's, but because they are supplements and don't come with the console, they increase the price for access to a relatively small library of motion control based games. However the market is growing of course and the library shall also grow. Between the PS3 and the 360, the PS3's motion sensing system is the most expensive. In order for the system to be effective you must by the motion sensing wand and its navigation supplement as well as the camera to read the movements (Some single player games even require you to have two wands.). When an individual is a frequent consumer of a certain product, the consumer will eventually become aware or at least have some knowledge of the marketing mix of that product. However, besides from being a dedicated consumer, I was also involved in selling this product as a sales associate and this gave me some insight on the marketing mix of this product. • 35. Nintendo, The Oldest Video Game Company Consider the situation faced by Nintendo, the oldest video–game company in the world. The company had positioned its line of developing good games for all age stages and strongly opposed to violence and pornography. In 1985, shortly after the company's introduction of Nintendo Entertainment System to the United States, Nintendo met its match when Japanese entertainment giant Sony and American tech behemoth Microsoft entered the field with the PlayStation and Xbox. Despite the new competition, Nintendo still held strong. However, Sony and Microsoft had more resources to produce advanced devices. Nintendo released Gamecube in 2001, however, the Xbox and Playstation 2 offered popular franchises, such as Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo. At end of the year, The Gamecube just sold 7 million, and Playstation 2 sold 17 million. In 2006, Nintendo sold about 22 million Gamecubes, Microsoft sold about 25 million Xboxes, and Sony sold 150 million Playstation 2s. Clearly the result of that match–up showed that Nintendo was the last place, as it was outsold by both of the other companies. Nintendo's share of the market and sales seemed likely to shrink in the round of console. • 36. Nintendo's Wii Strategy Nintendo has pursued a fundamentally different strategy and business model with the Wii console than that of its competitors, the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3. The heart of Nintendo's strategy was the assumption that consoles do not necessarily require leading–edge power and performance. This is a radical stance since the gaming industry traditionally competed on technological performance, graphic quality, and game realism: factors valued primarily by die–hard gaming fans. Nintendo shifted its focus to providing a new form of player interaction targeted at a wider demographic than the traditional avid game audience. Nintendo's new business model has the following characteristics: 1) a shift from hardcore to casual gamers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Production costs can be high, there is a major learning curve, and access to distribution channels and inputs can also create challenges. In this technological advancement driven industry, the possession of proprietary technology, partnerships with the best but cheapest suppliers can be considered high barriers to new entrants. Once a game console is on the market, more money needs to be invested into games and accessories as well as production due to the fact that most of the profits come from game sales rather than console sales. From the economies of scale standpoint, given that both Microsoft and Sony had traditionally been operating at a loss in hopes of making significant profit gains in software and game sales, even though both were taking steps to reduce their production costs later in 2008, a new entrant may need to either enter on a large scale or accept a cost disadvantage and consequently lower profits. The current three rivals are large global companies and put large amounts of resources into their consoles, indicating that a new and small firm would find it extremely difficult to compete in the video game industry. • 37. Video Game And The Game In November, 1971 the first commercially targeted video game was released in America as an arcade machine called 'Computer Space' in which the aim of the game was to fly through 2D space avoiding UFO's firing upon you and destroying them. The game sold poorly and was notoriously difficult to grasp as it was only played on university campuses. This however inspired other programmers to make more games and the following year Atari released 'PONG' as an upright arcade machine, the aim of the games is to score points in a simulated tennis style match. It was the first game to reach mainstream audience and is fairly well known within popular culture and subsequently went on to spawn a home edition of the game to played on TV sets 3 years later. This generated larger sums of money as each of the 100,000+ arcade machines in America were generating between $35–$40 a day and the home edition sold 150,000 units through the 1975 holiday season. This would mark the start of the gaming industry and in the years to follow the industry would expand to Japan and Europe with year on year profits in the excess of $2 billion by 1982. It would survive the video game crash of 1983 in which most of the American developers would become bankrupt because of lack of innovation and the flooded home console market to name a few.
