Fashion Sexuality And Fashion Pornography
The act of pornography has paved the way for sexualized imagery in fashion photography. This
thesis examines the increasing sexualisation and its impact on contemporary culture in today's
society. The ever–changing definition of sexualized imagery has started from the 1970's to
contemporary culture.(___) In this research paper we will look at the historical use of sexuality in
fashion photography and its role that Tom Ford, Helmet Newton and Calvin Klein have played over
the generations within advertisements. An analysis of these advisements and its impact on society
will be addressed. The connection between fashion photography and the acknowledgment of porn

By purchasing this suit you will have women doing everything for you. By the way the female
model is standing vs. the male model is standing; the female is performing a medico task while the
male is simply reading. Contrasting this of the 1950s artist Edward Steichen, who was known for his
contributes to fashion photography; his models would wear the gowns designed by the fashion
designer Paul Poiret and his style highlighted the model, using traditional portrait style and soft
lighting to give a sophisticated look revealing to his time. (___) In comparison you can see that
throughout history the expectations of photography have changed drastically and the objectification
of women has only gotten worse. In order to sell products sex has been the most used subject and its
still existing today.
Another designer that has directly influenced fashion photography in a more sexual way is Helmet
Newton. He was referred to the "King of Kink", this influential fashion photographer made his name
by shooting models in noticeable, provocative black and white images for vogue, (_____).
Assuming he could get away with this imagery because he was a well–known artist, the nudes
where argued to be artistic more then objectifying. But in making a statement as such the expression

Sex Sells : Our World Revolves Around Sex
Nickolas Tsokas Mr Strauss E.L.A. 5–07 October 28th 2014 Sex Sells Our world revolves around
sex. Sex is used to entice the general public to buy products and invest in the brand not because of
the product itself but because of the giant sexual campaign backing the company up. We see sex in
movies, which influences teenagers to watch those movies. The media also does a horrendous job
falsifying what an average man or women should look like which then creates self–esteem and
confidence problems in many people. The multimillion–dollar companies use that approach in
advertising their products and brand because they are saying, "if you would like to look and have the
body of this man or woman, you must buy our makeup which will make you feel younger or buy our
cologne to attract the opposite sex guaranteed" sure enough people are influenced and are made to
believe the unreal, falsified perception of what a man or woman should look like. Not only does it
degrade the average person it also influences the way children perceive sex and all that has shown
an increase in the number or children in high school who are having sex. Sex, is seen almost
everywhere, from commercials, to movies and there is one reason for this; sex sells. Major
corporations hire advertising firms who's main objective is to acquire a larger consumer database.
For them to accomplish that they use erotic and provocative images that are added unnecessarily to
advertisements, which then arouses interest from

Society Is Made To Believe That There Are Natural...
Society is made to believe that there are natural distinctions between men and women in other words
men and women should act in a certain way according to the material presented in popular
magazines. Men are described as being strong and dominant and women are described as being
weak and emotional, (Hargreaves, J., 2012). Additionally magazines tell the public that men and
women must have different interests, men should be interested in getting drunk and driving cars
whereas women should be interested in shopping and wearing makeup, (Jacobson, N.S. and
Gottman, J.M., 1998). Despite that it is also clear that these fixed views are not an accurate
representation of what males and females are actually like. There is a possibility that ... Show more

Alternatively, individuals are confined to agreeing with the public's standards and acceptable
behaviours. Individuals are unable to speak openly about their sexuality because due to the media
the public does not represent certain sexualities as the norm, (DeFrancisco, V.P. and Palczewski,
C.H., 2007). Both men and women's lifestyle magazines have shown the public what the perfect
male and female is, with men's magazines representing 'laddish' behaviour and women's magazines
promoting feminine behaviour only to be able to please men, therefore excluding other sexualities as
they are not seen as the norm and are therefore not important, (BARTOŠKOVÁ, I., 2009). Foucault
would argue that these representations of the truth are due to scientific discourse and organisations
and are always being advertised in popular magazines and in the "education system and the flux of
economic and political ideologies", (Fowler, R., 2013). Therefore the debate about where popular
magazines tell the truth about magazines involves the discussion of whether magazines present the
truth or whether their representation of the truth is constructed, (Weaver, C.K., Motion, J. and Roper,
J., 2006). However, feminists would argue that magazines which promote women's sexuality and
represent men as being the dominant sex would become problematic in the long run, (Else–Mitchell,

Essay on Ways in Which Television Corrupts American Society
When the first television was first successfully shown, people thought that this invention brought
people to a new age, and that the television was a huge benefit to humanity. Unfortunately, since
then the Golden Era of television's moral and standards have fallen drastically. We are far away from
the days when Lassie and the town of Mayberry ruled the airways and were the talk of America.
What was once intended as a benefit for society has become its detrimental fall, now instead of
upholding American society's standards, television is working to corrupt the very society it intended
to help. When used on television programs that children watch, vulgar vernacular degrade society's
standards; children use the words without thinking about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This senseless use of violence desensitizes children to the use of violence, which then causes them
to respond to situations with a negative or violent action that results in adverse consequences. Two
new series, Human Target and Spartacus depict violence as the only way to solve problems in life,
because both programs depict fighting as a lifestyle that can be glorious. Another infamous example
would be the series 24 which often has scenes of "gruesome violence and torture which is consider
controversial" (Johnson). What are children supposed to learn from a show that allows the
portrayed, Secretary of Defense, to torture his son to uncover evidence of a plot of terrorism? With
this desensitization, young minds see violence as the solution to real life problems, not only
destroying and wasting our community when they are put in jail for consequences of violence, but
destroys the basic foundation of American society's morals. Yet, another thing about the media of
television that has changed in the decades that it has been around is the promotion of sexuality and
promiscuity. When television was till relatively young, sex was a taboo that was not to be talked
about, touched on, or showing. Married couples had to be shown to have "separate beds to sleep in"
(Sipe). Now, immorality has been shown in prime time slot with shows like Beverly Hills 90210,
Spartacus, and especially

A Rhetorical Analysis Of An Ad Essay

What's Being Advertised; A Hamburger or Something Else? There are many factors that contribute
to the overall influence that an advertisement can have on an audience. In May 2005, Carl's Jr.
debuted the controversial ad featuring a bikini–clad Paris Hilton writhing sensuously on an
expensive Bentley luxury car while enjoying a large burger. This ad's effectiveness relies on trendy,
sexualized imagery, and specific language choicest appeal to the young teenage to college age male.
However, we live in a society where women are being exposed by the media. Typical stereotypes
suggest that woman are suppose to be beautiful, skinny, and have flawless bodies. Carl's ... Show

Carl's Jr. is able to effectively complete this task because of a variety for factors in their
advertisement. They successfully appeal to the specific audience by using sexualized, trendy
imagery that creates an eye catching effect. Because of this initial appeal, Carl's Jr. is able to draw
the consumer's attention only using two images and three sentences. When it comes to asking if
"size matters," Carl's Jr. might repeat the same claim they used to advertise their hamburger – "She'll
tell you that size doesn't matter. She's

Within contemporary culture looking at sexuality and pornography from 1970's and contrasting it to
current context of North America society, we will explore culture through the act of visualization of
mediated images.(Contributor) Fashion imagery has become increasingly provocative during this
time period there has been a line between contemporary eroticism and pornographic images. In the
past few decades the fashion industry has capitalized off of the over–sexualization of the female
form in order to promote consumption of products by using advertisements. The designer Tom Ford
is an example of this, his advertisements such as (fig.1) you can see two figures in the scene, one is

Sexism in Television Commercials
Sexism in Television Commercials Many of us have seen a commercial and felt offended by the
sexist attitudes represented. It appears that on every channel, there is another television commercial
trying to sell its product with beautiful women. These commercials can range from selling beer to
selling cars (Sadiq). From sports to personal hygiene and home improvement products. Almost
every commercial has someone missing proper attire, or insinuating the other is dumb or not as
intelligent. These commercials make men and women feel degraded and ashamed. Remember when
the World Cup was the biggest sporting even in the world? Well, World Cup advertising and its other
choice catchphrases include "EXPLAIN YOUR FOOTBALL PASSION TO THE ... Show more

But, some people see it as a joke and laugh it off. That's the thing about this advertising campaign:
The ads can offend and entertain in equal measures (McManis). Though on the outside looking in,
we would think something would be done about it. Many of the commercials we see for home
improvement products have the routine stay–at–home mom trying to figure out a way to make her
job easier. These include Glade, Scrubbing Bubbles, Clorox, and Swiffer. The list could go on. In
these commercials, the women are seen in the old fashioned way of they're only good enough to
clean and take care of kids. What about fathers who stay at home? Or the working single mother or
father who have the same responsibilities and more? These commercials fail to show the reality of
everyday life. No men are shown with these responsibilities, making it seem as if they are incapable
of such tedious duties.
Watching a football game, we can usually find an attractive young lady being swept off her feet by a
less attractive man after he opens his beer of choice. Or, if we're lucky, we can witness several
young women on a desert island with the male drinker after, of course he opens his can of beer.
These advertisements present women as a goal, a trophy if you will, that can only be attained with
the proper beverage. These women seldom have anything to say besides "Yes" making them seem
like unintelligent objects (Sadiq). This

Gender Stereotypes In The Piano By Jane Campion
The Piano focuses on the love triangle of Ada, her husband Stewart and her lover Baines. Ada, at the
middle of two dominating male characters, is seemly quiet but her bold and manipulative moves
show a more calculating side to her character. Jane Campion's characterisation of multidimensional
characters that often bend the gender stereotypes but also play directly into them.
When Baines meets Ada, his attraction to her is instant. The audience witnesses a conversation
between Baines and Stewart whereby Baines offers to buy Ada's piano if she will give him lessons.
It is clear that Baines' intentions in this request are not honest and that he is interest in making a
sexual advance towards the newly married Ada. This level of calculating manipulation is typically a
male characteristic, and his blatant attempt at receive sex from her shows a male stereotype whereby
all men are driven by their want for sex.
During the first love scene between Ada and Stewart, Ada attempts to get Stewart into an exposed
and compromised position whereby she has power and control over the situation. Stewart ultimately
becomes uncomfortable very quickly, playing into the masculine stereotype that men do not like to
be dominated. However contrastingly, Stewart has a caring side whereby he becomes a fatherly
figure to Ada's daughter.
The next love scene between Ada and Stewart is more violent and shows the gender stereotypes or
expectations coming to the surface. Stewart becomes enraged when

Does Sex Sell?
When you go to Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), we are bombarded with huge billboards in
hope to catch the attention of passengers, which include pictures of people in lingerie or underwear.
A few months ago, there was a controversy surrounding the Philippine Volcanoes, a Philippine
rugby team, for posing too provocatively for an underwear company in EDSA. It was deemed
"inappropriate" by the mayor of Mandaluyong, Benhur Abalos and Valenzuela mayor, Sherwin
Gatchalian (Naredo & Pedrasa, 2011). Many were offended by how many innocent children can
perceive those titillating images. These scantily clad models that are in the billboards are made to

This shows how much people are offended with putting vulgar images in advertisements. However,
There is a slight problem with her research since the survey did not connect with how much demand
for products that are advertised vulgarly. This research paper will answer the question if sex does
sell among college students, both male and female gender. However, this research could be biased
since not all are comfortable about the topic of sex. Even though sex is supposedly normal, it is a
social taboo in different families, religion, sexual orientation and region. The world has a diverse
definition about what sex should be, some can be liberal and others can be conservative, hence some
college students might not be comfortable or may lie while answering many of the questions in the
survey. This may cause some errors with the study nonetheless this research still might help to
answer the question, "Does sex sells?" and what are these images gives and influence to society.
Carlos' hopes that this paper can answer the question, "If sex does sells?" I hope to determine
whether putting sexual innuendoes in advertisements help people to remember and buy the product

Sex Sells : Sexual Innuendo
Sex sells. Many advertisers and companies attempt to over sexualize their products, some in blunter
ways than others. In many of the aggressively sexual ads, advertisers create women as sex objects
and nothing else. These campaigns do not show women in their true states, but rather as parts of
women or put into positions to symbolize objects. In the Natan jewelry advertisement, the company
objectifies a woman by removing her identity and only including the image of her pristine legs. The
picture is of a woman sitting in a chair with her legs together, then transitions to her open legs. The
woman makes this transition due to the male model presenting an engagement ring. There is an
interesting display of power in this image because the man depicted has obvious control over the
woman, but the advertisers clearly show that the woman holds the man's goal (sex). The ad uses this
sexual innuendo in order to show the message of power exchange between men and women as, "... it
suggests that this particular notion may be less about sex, less about actual human sexual behaviors,
than it is about power" (Streeter). By forming the woman as a sexual object, the ad clarifies two
myths being that women lack power compared to their counterparts, and that women are open to
sexual activities based on material goods. Prior to discussing the myths found in this advertisement,
one must first understand how the woman pictured is being objectified. The advertisement only
includes the model's legs

her studies of alcohol and tobacco advertising. The first killing us softly is made in 1979 a 30 mins'

The pop culture delights in ridi–culing and mocking celebrities who have gained weight. The
yesterday's sex symbols would be considered fat by today's standards. And the fashion models keep
getting thinner and thinner. To fit the designer's new cloths. If they aren't thin enough, Photoshop
will be used o make them appear thinner. The body type that we can see in advertisements as
acceptable is fewer than 5% of American women have. Some ads even seem to encourage unhealthy
attitudes like eating disorders. Women are bombarded with ads for products that promise weight
loss. How–ever, diet products are often dangerous, and at best they do not work. 95% dieters not
only re–gain whatever weight they lose within five years, they go on to gain more. And the over
weight is a major public health problem 1/3 Americans are obese. And 2/3 are overweight. Women
have been made to feel ashamed of eating. And the more guilty women are made to feel about
eating, the more erotic the ads for food become. After watching this part, I have the same feel–ings
with Kilbourne. In the public, girls are shaped to be too thin to be obtained. I think the thinness isn't
the major part of beauty. The is balance. For example girls will looks good if they have a well–
balanced body shape. Like if you a thin body girls. Your breast will not been big. All if you have big
breast you are not supposed to be thin. Because of the body balance. So the culture should really
encourage women to have a healthy body instead over shaped morbid body. To achieve that the
celebrity should take the lead. Forming a health profiles to the public. Instead tell girls about the

to get more stupider" or what I recall hearing and still hear from kids today about the opposite sex

Audience Ethnographic Criticism
Amanda T. Smith
17 November 2015 The meanings and perceptions that viewers take from television commercials are
subjective. The purpose of a commercial and the way the audience understands a commercial has a
lot to do with the personality of the individual watching. Race, gender, socioeconomic status, age,
and religion are all factors which contribute to how given audiences understand pop culture and
Television. Audience ethnography is a tool used by television critics to describe and understand how
different groups construct meaning from television texts and mediums. This tool is useful because it
helps producers connect to their audience and allows them to assume what their implied viewers ...

The woman begins to look flustered and aggravated. As the camera focuses on the woman, we see
that her attention has moved to a bag of Doritos that is on the table in front of them. The woman,
with a smirk on her face, takes the bag of Doritos and leaves the couch. At this time, the man runs
out of Doritos and looks for the second bag. He soon realizes that the woman has taken his second
bag of Doritos and goes to find her to ask where the chips are. As he enters the room, where the
woman is, his face lights up with excitement, as he sees the woman on the bed. The woman is naked
with Doritos covering her entire body. She is in the bed eating as the man nears closer and closer. In
the background we hear the sports announcer shouting out that the football player is close to making

man jumps on the bed on top of the woman, we hear "Touchdown"! The commercial ends as we
hear the announcer say "That's excessive celebration in the end zone", and the screen goes black.
What does this ad tells us about the relationships between men and women? It tells us that the only
way to gains a man's full attention is to be naked and initiate sex. It tells us that small gestures, like

sexuality."Sex sells, honey and it knows no boundaries – certainly not in certain chick flicks.

The Negative Impact Of Women In Advertising
Advertisements have played a major role in practically everyone's life; it is a principal factor in
whether a product will sell and gives consumers a reason to buy their product. What you probably
do not notice is the way that most women are portrayed in these advertisements. Most women in
today's media are viewed as literal sex objects, and most advertisements use this as a way to sell
something. This may seem to be a harmless way of promoting a product but these sexually
provocative advertisements have had a grave effect on our society. Today's advertising industry has
used women in a negative way causing repercussions to the women all over the world. These young
adults reading Vanity Fair or Cosmopolitan magazine probably think they're just learning about chic
exercise routines and skin/beauty care, but the hidden message remains: meet this standard, or be
less than what you are. This idea is evidently present in the ever–increasing rates of eating disorders
like bulimia nervosa and binge eating.
The evolution of our society's opinion of feminine beauty has changed over the last hundreds of
years. Historically, women have always been more prone to stereotyping than men. Women who
were very voluptuous and curvy were once thought to be the most attractive than the thin, however
the trend nowadays has gone in the opposite direction where being skinny is everything a girl should
be. Women back in the day were viewed by men/everybody as the caretakers of the children, of the

Female Athletes And Male Athletes
It's pretty clear that in today's society males are the dominate figure in sports. Unlike female
athletes, men receive a tremendous amount of media attention than female athletes. Young boys
grow up watching television bombarded with heroic images of male athletes. They have something
to look up to, while young girls do not receive the same images. Male and female athletes have
many equal opportunities when it comes to playing and succeeding in sports. Yet it seems that male
sports happen to catch more of the limelight when it comes to the media and the publicity they
receive for the athletics performances. Women have been fighting this battle against the media for
many years now. The problem is that women athletes are portrayed as sex symbols and are not taken
seriously as athletes. Female athletes make up 40 percent of sports participants nationally, but only
received 8 percent of the entire sports coverage. With that being said, this literature review examines
how the sports portray the female athlete compared to how the media represents them. Since the
20th century, female athletes have made enormous strides to improve their status. Prior to these
efforts and achievements, female athletes had to play in much poorer facilities under different rules
and with stricter dress codes than male athletes. Society also ignored and discriminated against
female athletes. This discrimination portrayed them as masculine rather than feminine due to the
sport they play and the pictures

How Does A Man Clean Himself?
How often does a man clean himself? Does he do it much or barely at all? When men are around
each other, they are uncaring about whether or not they look or smell good, but if you were to throw
a female in the mix most men would try to look and smell more decent to impress. I choose to
analyze an AXE advertisement which in itself explains my theory above. Inside the ad provides two
people, a man and a woman, both of them are clearly undressed. In between shows the product the
ad is trying to sell, axe body wash. The man is applying the product to him taking a shower. The
woman on the other hand is not. Instead, the woman is applying whip cream to her chest, and she's
doing it for a reason. I noticed how the creators of the ad placed things how they wanted it to be.
The spokespeople for the ad are both in their early twenties. Both of them are positioned in the exact
same way, but the emotions they show is what gives off a difference. The man's face is relaxed and
calm while the woman's shows an expression of a sexual pleasure. At the bottom of the ad, there is a
sentence that states, "The Cleaner You Are the Dirtier You Get." All of the letters in the sentence
were capitalized. The first part, "The cleaner you are" is below the male spokesperson while the
second part, "the dirtier you get," is under the female spokesperson. What separates the two
spokespeople is the bottle of body wash its advertising. From the VALS index, I believe the

Does Sex Actually Sell?
Does Sex Actually Sell? In advertising, sex is the use of provocative imagery and erotic messages
that are specifically designed to gain interest in a particular product. Typically, in ads beautiful
women or handsome men are used to lure in the viewer or consumer. A McDonald's ad from 1977
focuses on selling their product using a family oriented scene. Forty years later, Burger King
releases an ad that focuses more on oral sex and degrading women. This illustrates that women have
gone from being nurturing figures to sex symbols in advertisements. In 1977, Jet and Ebony
featured a McDonald's advertisement in their magazines. Ebony is monthly magazine, while Jet is a
weekly magazine, but they both focus on the black community. Ebony is one of the oldest and most
successful African American magazines. Typically, women from the middle class to the wealthy
read the magazines. The magazines feature trends, advice, entertainment and news on black life in
America. In 1977, McDonald's released an ad that features an African American family of four all
sitting together in a booth. The family includes a mother, father, daughter and son. They are all
wearing casual clothing and eating a dinner that consists of French fries and cheeseburgers. Each of
them are all holding a different item off of the menu. Certain colors are used such as, dark purple,
blue, black, red, and yellow. They all seem to be very happy because they are smiling and laughing

Sell Side Process
There are several motives for owners to sell profitable companies. These can include emerging
alternative interests, elderly age and health issues. Alternatively, the sale may be a strategic one in
which they intend to gain credibility in the eye of angels and venture capitalists for further projects.

3. The Confidential Broad Auction
This confidential broad auction approach is the approach that is taken in all deals that FOCUS
Investment Banking represents. This is the most likely scenario for middle–market companies as
they lend themselves well to broad and public selling methods. Confidentiality is maintained by
taking a "blind outreach" approach coupled with confidentiality agreements (Three Types of
Auctions for Sell–Side Mergers & Acquisitions, n.d). This method will generally bring in a excess
of bidders that will be made up of financial and strategic buyers (Sale Processes, 2017). Therefore,
this process is most effective in a strong merger market such as the CRO market. Nonetheless, a
broad auction may deter potential bidders due to fears of overpaying for a business (Sale Processes,
2017). Furthermore, a broad auction can often consume a substantial amount of management 's time
and attention.

she must be bounded.' This is achieved by organization of her space, prescription of her gestures,

Essay The Commodification of Volleyball
The popularity of Volleyball has increased dramatically over past years. This is a result of
commodification. Commodification is the process of turning something into a commodity that can
be bought and sold. Over the past 20 years, Volleyball has evolved from a simple, fun and
recreational sport to a more appealing, more sexualized version, beach volleyball. As a result of this
evolution, beach volleyball has received a vast improvement in popularity, especially amongst a
male audience. The intent of this essay is to examine the sport of beach volleyball and explain why
the individuals, and the sport itself, have evolved throughout the years. Volleyball's transformation
into beach volleyball is a positive step forward for the sport in ... Show more content on

This is exactly what has happened to the sport. Males are the largest consumers of sport and are
therefore the target audience. It is doubted that the stereotypical male watches women's beach
volleyball for the sport itself, they prefer to 'watch the players'. Women's beach volleyball has
attracted a great deal of male interest purely because of the fact the women are wearing revealing
clothes. The media coverage that beach volleyball has achieved detracts from the main spectacle and
focuses on the sexual aspect of the game. This can also be a positive point as it has overthrown the
male hegemonic dominance within the sport.
The sexual nature of women's beach volleyball has ceased the male hegemonic dominance of the
sport. Now that the 'sex–ploited' version of volleyball has grabbed a greater audience, it is mainly
focussed on the female players. The male competition is does not draw as much attention as the
female one. As much as the uniforms appeal to a greater audience, beach volleyball glorifies a more
sexually attractive body, in both males and females, than one that is 'not'.
Beach volleyball requires its players to have a symbolically glorified body type, usually that of an
attractive build, in order for them to participate in the sport, this however posses a problem for the
women and men that are considered unattractive or do not align with the symbolic body image.

Women 's Representation Of Women
In a survey regarding body image, 69.3% of teenagers said they were not happy with their
appearance, and 64% of women in there sixties said they were not happy with their appearance
either. The difference between the two, however, is that the majority of the older women were
'grateful' about the way they look, while most teenagers described themselves as 'self–conscious'
when it comes to their physical appearance ("How Women Feel About Their Looks"). These
statistics prove that women of all ages are affected by women's representation in the media, as more
often than not, the women presented have unattainable physical characteristics and flawless facial
features. John Berger, a British novelist, poet and art critic, wrote Ways of Seeing in 1972, where he
focuses on how traditional, European nudist art plays a major role in the images we have of women
in our media today. Berger claims that the "social presence of a woman is different in king from that
of a man" (Berger 193) because a man's presence is determined by the potential power which he
asserts. As for a woman, the way she portrays and views her self determines how she expects to be
treated by those around her. Her presence will be reflected through her actions and physical
appearance. Berger uses the difference in social presence to explain why the spectator is always
implied to be male when looking at visual representations of females. More than forty years later,
Berger's argument is still valid and can be applied to

Importance of the Eunuchs in Elizabeth Inchbald's The Mogul Tale
The eunuch is an integral part of the 18th century play The Mogul Tale, by Elizabeth Inchbald. He
serves a historical role by being the Mogul's advisor, watchman, and, most importantly, harem
guard. Eunuchs are generally defined as castrated males and are thus excellent choices to guard the
Mogul's women – no fear of the guard taking the ladies for himself. Inchbald reinforces these noble
positions by showing the eunuch as the Mogul's "right–hand man". But with the passing of time
these traditional roles have died along with the people who embraced them. Eunuchs now exist in an
India that has all but forgotten their position as protectors. They are now part ... Show more content

survival – putting them at a high risk for AIDS11.
There are several roads that lead to a boy becoming a hijra. One way into the hijra life is to be
kidnapped. Organized gangs kidnap young boys from impoverished areas of India, or the boys are
sold by starving parents for a low sum of money. The boys are castrated and put out onto the streets
as beggars for up to forty years to prey on "religious sentiments and collective psyche of the Hindu
community"12. These hijras are given protection and shelter for a percentage of their "earnings".
There is still exist a risk today for young boys in these Mafia–style activies13. Because of the
castration process, there is no way for the boys to escape and reintegrate back into mainstream
society. They are made permanent outcast.
Those with gender identities and orientations outside of the mainstream are welcomed by the hijra
communities. In Indian society boys must exhibit their heterosexuality by puberty – if not, they are
labeled as hijras and put out of the family. There exist no place in Indian society for effeminate

Carrie Reinhard asserts that women do not feel comfortable playing as hypersexualized female
protagonists in video games, because the video game industry provides "characters modeling a body
they cannot achieve, more an object for the male gaze than female empowerment (Reinhard.
6)."Personally, seeing "the sunflower with the big breasts" did not encourage me to feel empowered.
I felt weak and insecure because of the stereotypes of women that are illuminated within video
games. Video games represent women as a typical damsel in distress, whereas men are viewed as
the hero (Brenick et. al. 3). Although, providing female protagonists in video games were supposed
to appeal to more women, it subsequently discouraged women from playing video games. Video
games do not only hypersexualize women. Although, researches have noted for years that most
video games target a male audience (Ivory. 2), the hypersexualization of men in video games has
taken a toll on their players (Greenberg et al. 3). Mass media that display hypersexualized men, and
women, such as video games, not only encourages women to become anorexic, it encourages men to
take steroids, or to excessively exercise (Barlett et al. 1). Researchers, Barlett, and Harris conducted
an experiment in which both men and women were immersed within a video game, that depicted
both women and men as hypersexualized (ibid).

Gender And Male And Gender
Throughout today 's society, almost every aspect of someone's actions is based on whether or not he
or she fits into the social norms that have been created. It is now clear that males are the dominant
figures in our society. Norms in society do not just come randomly to one 's life; they start since a
child is born. When a child is born the first question asked by the parents, family, and friends is the
gender of the child, whether it is a girl or a boy. In contrast, the terms sex and gender have always
been interdependent terms but have distinct meanings. Sex is male and female while gender is
masculine and feminine. In essence, sex refers to the biological differences and hormonal profiles.
For example females have boobs and males do not. In the other hand, gender describes the
characteristics that a society or culture present as masculine or feminine. For example, the color blue
is for boys and pink is for girls which not has always been the case. The article from the publication
Earnshaw 's Infants ' Department "The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the
girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy,
while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl". Jayme Poisson, a journalist, in

They Say Sex Sells By Looking At Tom Ford 's Advertisement...
They say sex sells. By looking at Tom Ford's 2007 advertisements for his menswear collection, sex
is not only in the forefront but represents the message in this campaign. The advertisement chosen
for this essay depicts a naked woman ironing the pants of a man whom, stylishly dressed, seems to
pay no attention to her. She, on the other hand, appears to be relentlessly hoping for just a nod of his
approval as she glares at him. The inequality within their stance, and within the very obvious
observation that he is dressed and she is fully nude, demonstrates sexism at its finest. What may or
may not be obvious is the fact that this ad is supposed to be selling menswear, but instead sells very
apparent, yet harmful gender stereotypes. In this essay, I will argue that women are depicted as
objects for the male gaze, and are over sexualized as a degradation of their value. Their value is
depicted by stereotypical femininity, impossible beauty ideals, and an apparent desire to constantly
please their master: the man.
According to John Berger, men and women have different social presences (271). Unlike a woman,
a man depends "upon the promise of power which he embodies", and this power is always employed
on others (271). A woman's presence, on the other hand, reveals itself within her voice, clothes,
expressions, and gestures, and she must constantly survey her image (Berger 271).
In the Tom Ford ad, the woman's presence is within her blank, but almost persistent expression for

A Woman 's Self Worth
A woman's self–worth is valued more than her sex appeal, especially in the world of music, where
she is given the ability to create that touches many hearts and the power to also become a role model
that many admire and aspire to be like. However, as seen in ghosts of history past and in examples
of modern times, it stands true that women in music are pushed to be submissive, sexual creatures,
incomparable to their male counterparts. Although there are some women who have step beyond the
boundaries of their expectation, others still remain behind this line. These are the women that are
pressurized by the business to exploit their bodies in order to strike it rich within the world of music.

Perfume Ad Analysis : Heat
Perfume Ad Analysis: Heat
Our entire lives, sex had been used to sell. It is only natural that we have a brain that responds to
certain primal instincts. Perfume, fashion, makeup, and many other advertisement companies have
created ads with sexual annotations. This now has become a social norm. These techniques have
been used for over hundreds of years in advertising, so now our minds are pre–programmed to look
at sexual imagery within advertisements. The more sexually provocative an ad is, the more people
will be drawn to them. For example, in the perfume ad that features Beyonce, a famous singer,
posing sexually in a provocative red satin dress with the word "HEAT" written above her head. This
ad is trying to persuade people into buying the perfume known as Heat. By using a color scheme of
mostly red and using Beyonce as the celebrity endorser of the product, helps this ad achieve pathos
and logos.
In the Heat perfume ad, Beyonce is posing in a very seductive way. Beyoncé's body language seems
as she is staring into the camera trying to seduce the audience into buying the perfume. Her legs are
slightly open wearing a revealing red silk dress that brings attention to her cleavage. The perfume is
not big or clear in this ad because they want us to focus more on the Beyonce leaning next to it. The
vibrant tones of red from her dress, background, and the perfume is a message of branding and sex
appeal. Since the product name is Heat, knowing that we associate red with things

Similarity In The Media
What is Similarity?
Have you ever truly thought about what being similar means? If not here is your chance. Similarity
means having a similar feature or aspect as another individual. How bodies look and work on the
inside is the same for all, so why does it matter what they look like on the outside? Media of all
types discriminate against both male and female bodies. Why do they do this? How come they can't
portray each individual the same? Whether it is a man or woman both body types are discriminated
against. Mainly it is due to the fact that women are discriminated against more than men are. Media
only states how women are dismembered, but they do not realize men are too. Men are considered
more sexually active and are known to make statements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Degrading men based on what we call the norms of society is completely stupid. Men are smart
when they want to be yet we call them dumb or stupid for having fun with your friends. Females can
go out and have fun why can't males. According to Kim Parker and Gretchen Livingston in their
article 6 Facts About American Fathers, it states "The public has mixed views about these changes.
While only a small share of people (18%) agree that women should return to their traditional roles in
society, breadwinning is still more often seen as a father's role than a mother's. About four–in–ten
(41%) say it is extremely important for a father to provide income for his children; just 25% say the
same of mothers. And while about three–quarters of the public say having more women in the
workplace has made it harder for parents to raise children, a majority (67%) say this has made it
easier for families to live comfortably." (Gretchen Livingston, Kim Parker). There are mixed views
as you very well can see but women should be able to go out and work if they please to, and the
same goes for men. If they want to stay home and do the feminine jobs then let them. It should not

Gender Representation in Advertising Essay
Gender Representation in Advertising
The roles of males and females in society have significantly changed, as opposed to the predominant
roles in our history. In the modern culture of today, women have begun to break out of the mold that
which society has placed her in. This much can't be said when it comes to modern gender
representation in mass media advertising. It can be safe to state that woman are seen as sexual,
fragile, exotic–whereas men are portrayed as tough, in control, and aggressive. This trend can be one
seen as an inhibitor to the advancement of our culture, because especially for women, it is hard to
pull away from the stereotypes that are continuously represented. As examples of the given trend,

When it comes to the male figure in advertisements, it is a different picture. Representations of men
in media have a different approach–they tend to focus on strength, power, physique, independence,
etc... The first ad portrays a clearly athletic, strong, male individual. His expression is one of
determination and focus–He's not going to let anyone get in his way. He is aggressive, and
overflowing with testosterone. It is unclear what the product is, something to do with athletic
performance. The next image is fitted with the caption "Always A Champion", making it simple to
realize this ad is all about the male ego. This man has a very intimidating expression, one of strength
and–almost anger. His positioning shows off his clearly muscular arms and his aura is almost
overpowering. In both images, the idea that a true man should be strong, aggressive, etc... is
presented. For any normal male individual viewing this ad, he would feel like that is what he should
be–if he was a "real man".
When pictured together, the male figure usually is portrayed as the more dominant one, unless the
female character is clearly socially superior. In this Dockers advertisement, the two individuals are a
couple. At first they seem like a happy one, but it is obvious who the domineering partner is. The

Objectification of Women
The objectification of women can simply be defined as "seeing and/or treating a
[women] as an object" instead of a human being (Papadaki). Women today are portrayed as objects
because of the overexposure of erotic images and scenarios in society's media, social networking
and their expectations.
Say someone is buying something from the local grocery store. While they are in line they notice
magazines near the cash register. They then proceed to look through the covers and pages. All there
is, is beautiful women. Weather they are clothed or not, that is all they see. Back before the internet,
magazines and newspapers were the primary source for entertainment. One of the more popular
ones for young boys and some adults was Playboy Magazine. Buy Playboy doesn't run pictures of
women, of female human beings of all ages and sizes, of the women who make up more than half of
our population.
What Playboy does, in fact, is "celebrate" one very small portion of the female gender
(Papadaki). They are usually models. Young, very pretty women of a very specific physical type
chosen to appeal to the male eyes. Playboy Magazine uses these beautiful women to sell their
magazines. And what does this country do? We buy them. Why?
Because the sex appeal is overwhelming. What man in the country wouldn't pay five to

A Great Moment In Creativity
In 2010 Diesel released their spring campaign tagged, "Sex Sells, Unfortunately We Sell Jeans."
This was a follow up on their "Be Stupid" campaign, which helped re–establish the brand amongst
consumers. The brands image was able to portray a sexy idea while still having enough humour to
be appreciated by a large audience. Although the idea of using sex appeal in advertising is not new,
Diesel ran into trouble with this campaign as a large number of the public stated that it was

Considering the belief that advertising has a strong influence over children and adolescence,
companies need to be aware of where advertisements with sexual content are being displayed, as to
not expose children to the negative effects these types of commercials can have. Numerous people
feel very strongly about sex in advertising and the repercussions these types of advertisement have
on society.
Every consumer perceives advertising differently, depending on the individuals' morals, values and
if they agree with the discourses of the current era. It is hard to appeal to all of societies ideals,
especially when using sex to sell. As some may believe that a topless women is demoralising and "a

Yet as much as "sex sells" to some consumers is also turns customers away. Both members of the
public and academic critics of advertising sometimes consider that advertising steps over the line of
decency and appropriateness in its representations. A survey in the United Kingdom found that two
thirds of women thought that advertisers were taking the sexual approach to selling products too far.
Especially when companies, like Diesel, use this approach even though their product has nothing to

The Portrayal Of Women In The Music Industry
With over 4 billion people having access to the internet worldwide, everyday people are exposed to
different types of pop culture media, one of those being the music industry. The music industry has
become one of the most popular pop culture entertainment due to its variety in music and complex
audience. Everyone regardless of race, age, gender, religion, and sexuality have access to a
multitude of different music varieties that they can listen to. However, with the music industry
growing rapidly, its audience grows along with it. With new and exciting sounds and beats, rising
artists, and catchy lyrics it is important that these songs encourage healthy ethical messages to
society due to the fact that almost everyone is exposed to music these days. Often times, especially
in Hip–Hop music we see how the portrayal of women is usually a negative one. I'm sure that you've
seen at least one song where women appear subject to men and appear as sex tools. Many hip hop
artists, through their music (whether meant to or not), emphasize how women should be seen as
tools for pleasure and they lack to show more positive attributes of women. With the music industry
objectifying and sexualizing women through derogatory language, it continues to contribute to the
present ideology that women are less that and should be inferior to men. There are numerous

An Overview On The Investment Services Industry
Industry Information and Overview:
The investment services industry is one of the fastest paced and rapidly evolving sectors of the
economy. The industry is highly dependent on the state of the economy and is highly cyclical. In
2000 when established firms in the industry began to tap the potential of the Internet, trading
volumes crashed in what is now termed the Dot–Com bubble. In 2002 when it seemed that
innovative technology and telecommunications companies would continuously improve business
productivity, the technology and telecom sectors crashed. More recently, just when the industry
thought it figured out how to rig the mortgage market to secure record profits with little to no risk,
the entire mortgage market crashed and created a liquidity crisis and a recession that would be later
described as the Great Recession. Investment services firms have learned time and time again that
they still must contend with an inevitable cycle of boom and bust.

Sex Sells, so Why Not Be Sold? Essay
It is said that Prostitution is wrong because the prostitute sells his or her body. This is no different
from professional athletes, they are selling their bodies. Models, sperm donors, and actors all legally
& consensually sell their bodies in return for a profit. Every year a prostitute is raped 19 times,
kidnapped 10 times, and beaten repeatedly; yet, the prostitute is still considered the criminal.
Prostitution should be decriminalized because the labor chore of prostitution is a form of work,
Regulated prostitution is safer for the prostitute and their client, and people have the right of
personal choice of selling their body.

Nor is there any doubt that serial killers know sex workers are afraid to seek protection from police;
or that the public believe violence is part of a prostitute's job description. Until prostitution is
legalized, these women will continue to toil down on the ocean floor, miles away from the light, in
constant fear of predators." (Mariano 3) The violence and crimes committed against prostitutes will
continue and increase until there are set laws that will make prostitution a legal profession.
Not only are the prostitutes getting abused, but they are afraid to contact police for help. "Prostitutes
avoid reporting serious crimes committed against them to the police for fear of being prosecuted
themselves. This makes them easy prey for predators looking for vulnerable targets whose absences
are less likely to be noticed or investigated." (Mann 6). These victims of abuse are not able to reach
out to police for help because they are performing an illegal act themselves. What if we considered
"sex workers" and "the community" one and the same? Sex workers are our neighbors, friends,
family, service providers and customers, after all. Much more than a possible nuisance, the murder
of women in our community seems like harm to our community. Sex workers are a part of our
everyday society and because of society's viewing of prostitutes as "lesser" or "beneath" the general
population; crimes committed against them appear to not be as serious.

Advertising: Sex Sells Essay examples
Advertising is a billion dollar market with a sole purpose to persuade the consumer to purchase
some type of product or service. Companies use many different methods to convince the public to
spend money on their products with most of their advertising focused around the idea of "sex sells".
This idea promotes a hunger in the consumer for gaining personal pleasure or acceptance of
sexuality by the eye catching effects of publicly baring flesh. These ideas are promoted through TV
commercials, billboards, magazines, radio ads, or any type of media targeted at the mass majority of
people. Every where a person looks there seems to be some type of advertising based on sex. The

An average person would look at this and attach the idea of sex appeal and the view of being
complete to a Nissan Altima. The Marxists would claim that this is just a fantasy that the corporate
economy uses to sell goods and services. This type of advertising works because people are no
longer seeing sex only as a way of reproduction, but as a way of acquiring pleasure. Another ad that
sticks out is the Calvin Klein ad for perfume which has a lady wrapped in what looks like a sheet
that is barley covering her breast leaving one to only imagine them selves creating this same image
by buying the product. From a Marxist view the argument would be that corporations are only using
sex for one thing and that is to create a desire in the consumer to buy products. They feel that the
consumers, "style, grooming, or body piercing can communicate who we are or how we want others
to think of us" (Seidman 17) so why not use this to their advantage to create an ideal self that people
will buy. In many of the ads in this magazine there is an idea of creating attractiveness, desire, love,
and a sense social acceptance that can be brought. One would argue that there is no way to buy
perfection, but the way advertising is done it makes it hard to believe. As in most advertising this
issue of Essence magazine only appears to be focused on women in sexual acts or positions to sell

This will definitely have a negative effect not only on children's attitudes but also on their sexual life
in the future. As doctor Carolyn C.Ross emphasizes in her article "The Effects of Early Exposure to
Sexual Content", when children are exposed to this sexualized content at early age, even if they do
not understand what they see, they have "a lasting" negative impression. When advertisers add those
sexual insinuations they give the children an impression of Azouz 3 "Freedom with sex" as Daniel

relations and a higher number than the normal of sex partners. Also it may contribute in making
their sexual life more violent (Ross). Women are highly affected by the sex ads as it degrades them

The Beauty Myth Phenomenon
"We say to girls, you should aim to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten
The Man." Spoke Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, an African author, about the roles in society in 2013.
The social roles between men and women were clearly distinguished in the past. However, when the
American men answered the call to arms in the Second World War, it was the American women who
took over their roles in society. Subsequently, after feminism arose, females were achieving higher
rank at work and the beauty myth emerged in attempt to control their growing power (Wolf 21).
Engulfed with television and magazine advertisements, the beauty importance issue was propagated
drastically. Furthermore, they were shown the "perfect" appearance they should aspire to; the ideal
attitude toward society and themselves they should possess. The old "wisdom" claims sex sells, and
it proved itself truthful over the time. Advertising sends a powerful message to women about how
they should look and behave, which causes severe problems in society.
After the World War II ended, the War Manpower Commission hoped the women would return to
their "social place" again, but they were wrong (Wolf 63). Still, in 1950s female magazines
redefined the housewife status, where the woman would strive for perfection in being a terrific wife,
mother and still handle the household flawlessly (Wolf 64). Betty Friedan asked: "Why it is never

advertisements portray women as having less social power than men (Springer Science). It is very
common for women to be used as models to sell products to men. Almost eighty percent of
advertisements in men's magazine present women as sex objects (Springer Science). Che's magazine
for men is an example of this statistic. Both figures below from Che's magazine advertises a better

These advertisements imply that women are sexual creatures for men. These advertisements
represent many stereotypes of the past such as a woman should be controlled by a man.
Advertisements like these can set society back rather than help us move forward. In figure two the
model is the closest object to the imagines center. This draws direct attention to her. In addition, she
has red cursive writing across her skirt. Red is often used to capture the audience's attention. In this
case, it draws attention to her buttocks. Both advertisements have text in the bottom right corner.
This text has a smaller font than the text on the models skirt in figure two. The text states, "Keep on
dreaming of a better world." It indicates that a woman is available to anyone in a better world. These
figures represent young female women as objects. Figure one features a young model in lingerie.
She is laying on the bed in a seductively manner. This is an extremely theme across advertisements
for men because nothing sells better than sex. The model also has a controller extending from her
belly button. The advertisement is not trying to sell a game, but make the model seem as if she is the
game. In other words, she is a game waiting to be played. In figure two the model is shown from
behind so that she is portrayed as an item instead of a

Fashion Sexuality And Fashion Pornography

  • 1. Fashion Sexuality And Fashion Pornography The act of pornography has paved the way for sexualized imagery in fashion photography. This thesis examines the increasing sexualisation and its impact on contemporary culture in today's society. The ever–changing definition of sexualized imagery has started from the 1970's to contemporary culture.(___) In this research paper we will look at the historical use of sexuality in fashion photography and its role that Tom Ford, Helmet Newton and Calvin Klein have played over the generations within advertisements. An analysis of these advisements and its impact on society will be addressed. The connection between fashion photography and the acknowledgment of porn explore the question: At what point does fashion photography develops into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By purchasing this suit you will have women doing everything for you. By the way the female model is standing vs. the male model is standing; the female is performing a medico task while the male is simply reading. Contrasting this of the 1950s artist Edward Steichen, who was known for his contributes to fashion photography; his models would wear the gowns designed by the fashion designer Paul Poiret and his style highlighted the model, using traditional portrait style and soft lighting to give a sophisticated look revealing to his time. (___) In comparison you can see that throughout history the expectations of photography have changed drastically and the objectification of women has only gotten worse. In order to sell products sex has been the most used subject and its still existing today. Another designer that has directly influenced fashion photography in a more sexual way is Helmet Newton. He was referred to the "King of Kink", this influential fashion photographer made his name by shooting models in noticeable, provocative black and white images for vogue, (_____). Assuming he could get away with this imagery because he was a well–known artist, the nudes where argued to be artistic more then objectifying. But in making a statement as such the expression of the women in his photos speak another story. • 2. Sex Sells : Our World Revolves Around Sex Nickolas Tsokas Mr Strauss E.L.A. 5–07 October 28th 2014 Sex Sells Our world revolves around sex. Sex is used to entice the general public to buy products and invest in the brand not because of the product itself but because of the giant sexual campaign backing the company up. We see sex in movies, which influences teenagers to watch those movies. The media also does a horrendous job falsifying what an average man or women should look like which then creates self–esteem and confidence problems in many people. The multimillion–dollar companies use that approach in advertising their products and brand because they are saying, "if you would like to look and have the body of this man or woman, you must buy our makeup which will make you feel younger or buy our cologne to attract the opposite sex guaranteed" sure enough people are influenced and are made to believe the unreal, falsified perception of what a man or woman should look like. Not only does it degrade the average person it also influences the way children perceive sex and all that has shown an increase in the number or children in high school who are having sex. Sex, is seen almost everywhere, from commercials, to movies and there is one reason for this; sex sells. Major corporations hire advertising firms who's main objective is to acquire a larger consumer database. For them to accomplish that they use erotic and provocative images that are added unnecessarily to advertisements, which then arouses interest from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Society Is Made To Believe That There Are Natural... Society is made to believe that there are natural distinctions between men and women in other words men and women should act in a certain way according to the material presented in popular magazines. Men are described as being strong and dominant and women are described as being weak and emotional, (Hargreaves, J., 2012). Additionally magazines tell the public that men and women must have different interests, men should be interested in getting drunk and driving cars whereas women should be interested in shopping and wearing makeup, (Jacobson, N.S. and Gottman, J.M., 1998). Despite that it is also clear that these fixed views are not an accurate representation of what males and females are actually like. There is a possibility that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alternatively, individuals are confined to agreeing with the public's standards and acceptable behaviours. Individuals are unable to speak openly about their sexuality because due to the media the public does not represent certain sexualities as the norm, (DeFrancisco, V.P. and Palczewski, C.H., 2007). Both men and women's lifestyle magazines have shown the public what the perfect male and female is, with men's magazines representing 'laddish' behaviour and women's magazines promoting feminine behaviour only to be able to please men, therefore excluding other sexualities as they are not seen as the norm and are therefore not important, (BARTOŠKOVÁ, I., 2009). Foucault would argue that these representations of the truth are due to scientific discourse and organisations and are always being advertised in popular magazines and in the "education system and the flux of economic and political ideologies", (Fowler, R., 2013). Therefore the debate about where popular magazines tell the truth about magazines involves the discussion of whether magazines present the truth or whether their representation of the truth is constructed, (Weaver, C.K., Motion, J. and Roper, J., 2006). However, feminists would argue that magazines which promote women's sexuality and represent men as being the dominant sex would become problematic in the long run, (Else–Mitchell, R. and ... • 4. Essay on Ways in Which Television Corrupts American Society When the first television was first successfully shown, people thought that this invention brought people to a new age, and that the television was a huge benefit to humanity. Unfortunately, since then the Golden Era of television's moral and standards have fallen drastically. We are far away from the days when Lassie and the town of Mayberry ruled the airways and were the talk of America. What was once intended as a benefit for society has become its detrimental fall, now instead of upholding American society's standards, television is working to corrupt the very society it intended to help. When used on television programs that children watch, vulgar vernacular degrade society's standards; children use the words without thinking about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This senseless use of violence desensitizes children to the use of violence, which then causes them to respond to situations with a negative or violent action that results in adverse consequences. Two new series, Human Target and Spartacus depict violence as the only way to solve problems in life, because both programs depict fighting as a lifestyle that can be glorious. Another infamous example would be the series 24 which often has scenes of "gruesome violence and torture which is consider controversial" (Johnson). What are children supposed to learn from a show that allows the portrayed, Secretary of Defense, to torture his son to uncover evidence of a plot of terrorism? With this desensitization, young minds see violence as the solution to real life problems, not only destroying and wasting our community when they are put in jail for consequences of violence, but destroys the basic foundation of American society's morals. Yet, another thing about the media of television that has changed in the decades that it has been around is the promotion of sexuality and promiscuity. When television was till relatively young, sex was a taboo that was not to be talked about, touched on, or showing. Married couples had to be shown to have "separate beds to sleep in" (Sipe). Now, immorality has been shown in prime time slot with shows like Beverly Hills 90210, Spartacus, and especially ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many factors that contribute to the overall influence that an advertisement can have on an audience. In May 2005, Carl's Jr. debuted the controversial ad featuring a bikini–clad Paris Hilton writhing sensuously on an expensive Bentley luxury car while enjoying a large burger. This ad's effectiveness relies on trendy, sexualized imagery, and specific language choicest appeal to the young teenage to college age male. In the past few decades the fashion industry has capitalized off of the over–sexualization of the female form in order to promote consumption of products by using advertisements. • 7. Sexism in Television Commercials Sexism in Television Commercials Many of us have seen a commercial and felt offended by the sexist attitudes represented. It appears that on every channel, there is another television commercial trying to sell its product with beautiful women. These commercials can range from selling beer to selling cars (Sadiq). From sports to personal hygiene and home improvement products. Almost every commercial has someone missing proper attire, or insinuating the other is dumb or not as intelligent. These commercials make men and women feel degraded and ashamed. Remember when the World Cup was the biggest sporting even in the world? Well, World Cup advertising and its other choice catchphrases include "EXPLAIN YOUR FOOTBALL PASSION TO THE ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But, some people see it as a joke and laugh it off. That's the thing about this advertising campaign: The ads can offend and entertain in equal measures (McManis). Though on the outside looking in, we would think something would be done about it. Many of the commercials we see for home improvement products have the routine stay–at–home mom trying to figure out a way to make her job easier. These include Glade, Scrubbing Bubbles, Clorox, and Swiffer. The list could go on. In these commercials, the women are seen in the old fashioned way of they're only good enough to clean and take care of kids. What about fathers who stay at home? Or the working single mother or father who have the same responsibilities and more? These commercials fail to show the reality of everyday life. No men are shown with these responsibilities, making it seem as if they are incapable of such tedious duties. Watching a football game, we can usually find an attractive young lady being swept off her feet by a less attractive man after he opens his beer of choice. Or, if we're lucky, we can witness several young women on a desert island with the male drinker after, of course he opens his can of beer. These advertisements present women as a goal, a trophy if you will, that can only be attained with the proper beverage. These women seldom have anything to say besides "Yes" making them seem like unintelligent objects (Sadiq). This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Gender Stereotypes In The Piano By Jane Campion The Piano focuses on the love triangle of Ada, her husband Stewart and her lover Baines. Ada, at the middle of two dominating male characters, is seemly quiet but her bold and manipulative moves show a more calculating side to her character. Jane Campion's characterisation of multidimensional characters that often bend the gender stereotypes but also play directly into them. When Baines meets Ada, his attraction to her is instant. The audience witnesses a conversation between Baines and Stewart whereby Baines offers to buy Ada's piano if she will give him lessons. It is clear that Baines' intentions in this request are not honest and that he is interest in making a sexual advance towards the newly married Ada. This level of calculating manipulation is typically a male characteristic, and his blatant attempt at receive sex from her shows a male stereotype whereby all men are driven by their want for sex. During the first love scene between Ada and Stewart, Ada attempts to get Stewart into an exposed and compromised position whereby she has power and control over the situation. Stewart ultimately becomes uncomfortable very quickly, playing into the masculine stereotype that men do not like to be dominated. When you go to Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), we are bombarded with huge billboards in hope to catch the attention of passengers, which include pictures of people in lingerie or underwear. A few months ago, there was a controversy surrounding the Philippine Volcanoes, a Philippine rugby team, for posing too provocatively for an underwear company in EDSA. It was deemed "inappropriate" by the mayor of Mandaluyong, Benhur Abalos and Valenzuela mayor, Sherwin Gatchalian (Naredo & Pedrasa, 2011). This shows how much people are offended with putting vulgar images in advertisements. However, There is a slight problem with her research since the survey did not connect with how much demand for products that are advertised vulgarly. This research paper will answer the question if sex does sell among college students, both male and female gender. However, this research could be biased since not all are comfortable about the topic of sex. Even though sex is supposedly normal, it is a social taboo in different families, religion, sexual orientation and region. The world has a diverse definition about what sex should be, some can be liberal and others can be conservative, hence some college students might not be comfortable or may lie while answering many of the questions in the survey. This may cause some errors with the study nonetheless this research still might help to answer the question, "Does sex sells?" and what are these images gives and influence to society. • 10. Sex Sells : Sexual Innuendo Sex sells. Many advertisers and companies attempt to over sexualize their products, some in blunter ways than others. In many of the aggressively sexual ads, advertisers create women as sex objects and nothing else. These campaigns do not show women in their true states, but rather as parts of women or put into positions to symbolize objects. In the Natan jewelry advertisement, the company objectifies a woman by removing her identity and only including the image of her pristine legs. The picture is of a woman sitting in a chair with her legs together, then transitions to her open legs. The woman makes this transition due to the male model presenting an engagement ring. There is an interesting display of power in this image because the man depicted has obvious control over the woman, but the advertisers clearly show that the woman holds the man's goal (sex). The ad uses this sexual innuendo in order to show the message of power exchange between men and women as, "... it suggests that this particular notion may be less about sex, less about actual human sexual behaviors, than it is about power" (Streeter). By forming the woman as a sexual object, the ad clarifies two myths being that women lack power compared to their counterparts, and that women are open to sexual activities based on material goods. Prior to discussing the myths found in this advertisement, one must first understand how the woman pictured is being objectified. The advertisement only includes the model's legs ... Race, gender, socioeconomic status, age, and religion are all factors which contribute to how given audiences understand pop culture and Television. The Negative Impact Of Women In Advertising Advertisements have played a major role in practically everyone's life; it is a principal factor in whether a product will sell and gives consumers a reason to buy their product. What you probably do not notice is the way that most women are portrayed in these advertisements. Most women in today's media are viewed as literal sex objects, and most advertisements use this as a way to sell something. This may seem to be a harmless way of promoting a product but these sexually provocative advertisements have had a grave effect on our society. Today's advertising industry has used women in a negative way causing repercussions to the women all over the world. These young adults reading Vanity Fair or Cosmopolitan magazine probably think they're just learning about chic exercise routines and skin/beauty care, but the hidden message remains: meet this standard, or be less than what you are. This idea is evidently present in the ever–increasing rates of eating disorders like bulimia nervosa and binge eating. The evolution of our society's opinion of feminine beauty has changed over the last hundreds of years. Historically, women have always been more prone to stereotyping than men. Women who were very voluptuous and curvy were once thought to be the most attractive than the thin, however the trend nowadays has gone in the opposite direction where being skinny is everything a girl should be. Yet it seems that male sports happen to catch more of the limelight when it comes to the media and the publicity they receive for the athletics performances. Women have been fighting this battle against the media for many years now. The problem is that women athletes are portrayed as sex symbols and are not taken seriously as athletes. Female athletes make up 40 percent of sports participants nationally, but only received 8 percent of the entire sports coverage. With that being said, this literature review examines how the sports portray the female athlete compared to how the media represents them. Since the 20th century, female athletes have made enormous strides to improve their status. Prior to these efforts and achievements, female athletes had to play in much poorer facilities under different rules and with stricter dress codes than male athletes. • 18. Does Sex Actually Sell? Does Sex Actually Sell? In advertising, sex is the use of provocative imagery and erotic messages that are specifically designed to gain interest in a particular product. Typically, in ads beautiful women or handsome men are used to lure in the viewer or consumer. A McDonald's ad from 1977 focuses on selling their product using a family oriented scene. Forty years later, Burger King releases an ad that focuses more on oral sex and degrading women. This illustrates that women have gone from being nurturing figures to sex symbols in advertisements. In 1977, Jet and Ebony featured a McDonald's advertisement in their magazines. Ebony is monthly magazine, while Jet is a weekly magazine, but they both focus on the black community. Ebony is one of the oldest and most successful African American magazines. Typically, women from the middle class to the wealthy read the magazines. The magazines feature trends, advice, entertainment and news on black life in America. As a result of this evolution, beach volleyball has received a vast improvement in popularity, especially amongst a male audience. Males are the largest consumers of sport and are therefore the target audience. It is doubted that the stereotypical male watches women's beach volleyball for the sport itself, they prefer to 'watch the players'. Women's beach volleyball has attracted a great deal of male interest purely because of the fact the women are wearing revealing clothes. The media coverage that beach volleyball has achieved detracts from the main spectacle and focuses on the sexual aspect of the game. This can also be a positive point as it has overthrown the male hegemonic dominance within the sport. The sexual nature of women's beach volleyball has ceased the male hegemonic dominance of the sport. Now that the 'sex–ploited' version of volleyball has grabbed a greater audience, it is mainly focussed on the female players. The male competition is does not draw as much attention as the female one. As much as the uniforms appeal to a greater audience, beach volleyball glorifies a more sexually attractive body, in both males and females, than one that is 'not'. Beach volleyball requires its players to have a symbolically glorified body type, usually that of an attractive build, in order for them to participate in the sport, this however posses a problem for the women and men that are considered unattractive or do not align with the symbolic body image. The difference between the two, however, is that the majority of the older women were 'grateful' about the way they look, while most teenagers described themselves as 'self–conscious' when it comes to their physical appearance ("How Women Feel About Their Looks"). These statistics prove that women of all ages are affected by women's representation in the media, as more often than not, the women presented have unattainable physical characteristics and flawless facial features. John Berger, a British novelist, poet and art critic, wrote Ways of Seeing in 1972, where he focuses on how traditional, European nudist art plays a major role in the images we have of women in our media today. Berger claims that the "social presence of a woman is different in king from that of a man" (Berger 193) because a man's presence is determined by the potential power which he asserts. As for a woman, the way she portrays and views her self determines how she expects to be treated by those around her. Her presence will be reflected through her actions and physical appearance. Berger uses the difference in social presence to explain why the spectator is always implied to be male when looking at visual representations of females. It is now clear that males are the dominant figures in our society. Norms in society do not just come randomly to one 's life; they start since a child is born. When a child is born the first question asked by the parents, family, and friends is the gender of the child, whether it is a girl or a boy. In contrast, the terms sex and gender have always been interdependent terms but have distinct meanings. Sex is male and female while gender is masculine and feminine. By looking at Tom Ford's 2007 advertisements for his menswear collection, sex is not only in the forefront but represents the message in this campaign. The advertisement chosen for this essay depicts a naked woman ironing the pants of a man whom, stylishly dressed, seems to pay no attention to her. She, on the other hand, appears to be relentlessly hoping for just a nod of his approval as she glares at him. The inequality within their stance, and within the very obvious observation that he is dressed and she is fully nude, demonstrates sexism at its finest. What may or may not be obvious is the fact that this ad is supposed to be selling menswear, but instead sells very apparent, yet harmful gender stereotypes. In this essay, I will argue that women are depicted as objects for the male gaze, and are over sexualized as a degradation of their value. Their value is depicted by stereotypical femininity, impossible beauty ideals, and an apparent desire to constantly please their master: the man. According to John Berger, men and women have different social presences (271). Unlike a woman, a man depends "upon the promise of power which he embodies", and this power is always employed on others (271). According to Kim Parker and Gretchen Livingston in their article 6 Facts About American Fathers, it states "The public has mixed views about these changes. While only a small share of people (18%) agree that women should return to their traditional roles in society, breadwinning is still more often seen as a father's role than a mother's. About four–in–ten (41%) say it is extremely important for a father to provide income for his children; just 25% say the same of mothers. And while about three–quarters of the public say having more women in the workplace has made it harder for parents to raise children, a majority (67%) say this has made it easier for families to live comfortably." (Gretchen Livingston, Kim Parker). There are mixed views as you very well can see but women should be able to go out and work if they please to, and the same goes for men. If they want to stay home and do the feminine jobs then let them. It should not matter to us as a society as long as they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Gender Representation in Advertising Essay Gender Representation in Advertising The roles of males and females in society have significantly changed, as opposed to the predominant roles in our history. In the modern culture of today, women have begun to break out of the mold that which society has placed her in. This much can't be said when it comes to modern gender representation in mass media advertising. It can be safe to state that woman are seen as sexual, fragile, exotic–whereas men are portrayed as tough, in control, and aggressive. This trend can be one seen as an inhibitor to the advancement of our culture, because especially for women, it is hard to pull away from the stereotypes that are continuously represented. As examples of the given trend, the following ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This look is what is considered "beautiful", and this is what all females should want to look like. When it comes to the male figure in advertisements, it is a different picture. Representations of men in media have a different approach–they tend to focus on strength, power, physique, independence, etc... The first ad portrays a clearly athletic, strong, male individual. His expression is one of determination and focus–He's not going to let anyone get in his way. He is aggressive, and overflowing with testosterone. It is unclear what the product is, something to do with athletic performance. The next image is fitted with the caption "Always A Champion", making it simple to realize this ad is all about the male ego. This man has a very intimidating expression, one of strength and–almost anger. His positioning shows off his clearly muscular arms and his aura is almost overpowering. In both images, the idea that a true man should be strong, aggressive, etc... is presented. For any normal male individual viewing this ad, he would feel like that is what he should be–if he was a "real man". When pictured together, the male figure usually is portrayed as the more dominant one, unless the female character is clearly socially superior. In this Dockers advertisement, the two individuals are a couple. At first they seem like a happy one, but it is obvious who the domineering partner is. The male is pulling ... Objectification Of Women : Women cResearch Paper Slavens 1 Kayla Slavens Mrs. Wiest English 131 22 October 2014 Objectification of Women The objectification of women can simply be defined as "seeing and/or treating a [women] as an object" instead of a human being (Papadaki). Women today are portrayed as objects because of the overexposure of erotic images and scenarios in society's media, social networking and their expectations. Say someone is buying something from the local grocery store. While they are in line they notice magazines near the cash register. They then proceed to look through the covers and pages. All there is, is beautiful women. Weather they are clothed or not, that is all they see. Back before the internet, magazines and newspapers were the primary source for entertainment. One of the more popular ones for young boys and some adults was Playboy Magazine. Buy Playboy doesn't run pictures of women, of female human beings of all ages and sizes, of the women who make up more than half of our population. What Playboy does, in fact, is "celebrate" one very small portion of the female gender (Papadaki). They are usually models. Young, very pretty women of a very specific physical type chosen to appeal to the male eyes. Playboy Magazine uses these beautiful women to sell their magazines. And what does this country do? We buy them. Why? Because the sex appeal is overwhelming. What man in the country wouldn't pay five to Kayla Slavens Monday, November 17, 2014 at 8:23:12 PM Central Standard Time ... This was a follow up on their "Be Stupid" campaign, which helped re–establish the brand amongst consumers. The brands image was able to portray a sexy idea while still having enough humour to be appreciated by a large audience. Although the idea of using sex appeal in advertising is not new, Diesel ran into trouble with this campaign as a large number of the public stated that it was demeaning and inappropriate. Yet others found them to be humorous, with the understanding that Diesel chose to use amateur photography and young models to appeal to the target audience of teenagers and young adults. Considering the belief that advertising has a strong influence over children and adolescence, companies need to be aware of where advertisements with sexual content are being displayed, as to not expose children to the negative effects these types of commercials can have. Numerous people feel very strongly about sex in advertising and the repercussions these types of advertisement have on society. Every consumer perceives advertising differently, depending on the individuals' morals, values and if they agree with the discourses of the current era. It is hard to appeal to all of societies ideals, especially when using sex to sell. As some may believe that a topless women is demoralising and "a failure to be creative" whereas, others may enjoy this advertisments and go on to look into the product being sold. Yet as much as "sex sells" to some consumers is also turns customers away. Both members of the public and academic critics of advertising sometimes consider that advertising steps over the line of decency and appropriateness in its representations. A survey in the United Kingdom found that two thirds of women thought that advertisers were taking the sexual approach to selling products too far. Especially when companies, like Diesel, use this approach even though their product has nothing to do with sex itself. Ever since advertisers have used sex to sell, members of society have not always agreed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The music industry has become one of the most popular pop culture entertainment due to its variety in music and complex audience. Everyone regardless of race, age, gender, religion, and sexuality have access to a multitude of different music varieties that they can listen to. However, with the music industry growing rapidly, its audience grows along with it. With new and exciting sounds and beats, rising artists, and catchy lyrics it is important that these songs encourage healthy ethical messages to society due to the fact that almost everyone is exposed to music these days. Often times, especially in Hip–Hop music we see how the portrayal of women is usually a negative one. I'm sure that you've seen at least one song where women appear subject to men and appear as sex tools. Many hip hop artists, through their music (whether meant to or not), emphasize how women should be seen as tools for pleasure and they lack to show more positive attributes of women. With the music industry objectifying and sexualizing women through derogatory language, it continues to contribute to the present ideology that women are less that and should be inferior to men. There are numerous examples of how male hip hop artists use their lyrics to deliberately dehumanize women. We see this when songs use offensive and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. An Overview On The Investment Services Industry Industry Information and Overview: The investment services industry is one of the fastest paced and rapidly evolving sectors of the economy. The industry is highly dependent on the state of the economy and is highly cyclical. In 2000 when established firms in the industry began to tap the potential of the Internet, trading volumes crashed in what is now termed the Dot–Com bubble. In 2002 when it seemed that innovative technology and telecommunications companies would continuously improve business productivity, the technology and telecom sectors crashed. More recently, just when the industry thought it figured out how to rig the mortgage market to secure record profits with little to no risk, the entire mortgage market crashed and created a liquidity crisis and a recession that would be later described as the Great Recession. Investment services firms have learned time and time again that they still must contend with an inevitable cycle of boom and bust. Every year a prostitute is raped 19 times, kidnapped 10 times, and beaten repeatedly; yet, the prostitute is still considered the criminal. Prostitution should be decriminalized because the labor chore of prostitution is a form of work, Regulated prostitution is safer for the prostitute and their client, and people have the right of personal choice of selling their body. Until prostitution is legalized, these women will continue to toil down on the ocean floor, miles away from the light, in constant fear of predators." (Mariano 3) The violence and crimes committed against prostitutes will continue and increase until there are set laws that will make prostitution a legal profession. Not only are the prostitutes getting abused, but they are afraid to contact police for help. "Prostitutes avoid reporting serious crimes committed against them to the police for fear of being prosecuted themselves. This makes them easy prey for predators looking for vulnerable targets whose absences are less likely to be noticed or investigated." (Mann 6). These victims of abuse are not able to reach out to police for help because they are performing an illegal act themselves. What if we considered "sex workers" and "the community" one and the same? Sex workers are our neighbors, friends, family, service providers and customers, after all. Much more than a possible nuisance, the murder of women in our community seems like harm to our community. Sex workers are a part of our everyday society and because of society's viewing of prostitutes as "lesser" or "beneath" the general population; crimes committed against them appear to not be as serious. Companies use many different methods to convince the public to spend money on their products with most of their advertising focused around the idea of "sex sells". This idea promotes a hunger in the consumer for gaining personal pleasure or acceptance of sexuality by the eye catching effects of publicly baring flesh. An average person would look at this and attach the idea of sex appeal and the view of being complete to a Nissan Altima. The Marxists would claim that this is just a fantasy that the corporate economy uses to sell goods and services. This type of advertising works because people are no longer seeing sex only as a way of reproduction, but as a way of acquiring pleasure. Another ad that sticks out is the Calvin Klein ad for perfume which has a lady wrapped in what looks like a sheet that is barley covering her breast leaving one to only imagine them selves creating this same image by buying the product. From a Marxist view the argument would be that corporations are only using sex for one thing and that is to create a desire in the consumer to buy products. They feel that the consumers, "style, grooming, or body piercing can communicate who we are or how we want others to think of us" (Seidman 17) so why not use this to their advantage to create an ideal self that people will buy. In many of the ads in this magazine there is an idea of creating attractiveness, desire, love, and a sense social acceptance that can be brought. One would argue that there is no way to buy perfection, but the way advertising is done it makes it hard to believe. As in most advertising this issue of Essence magazine only appears to be focused on women in sexual acts or positions to sell goods creating a concern of what is really being sold. Tom Reichert in his book "The Erotic History of Advertising" emphasizes the idea that sometimes this frequent use of the sex sells technique increases some consumer interest and builds a strong brand identity (Reichert). In fact, Sex was used to advertisements since the 1900's when the tobacco companies used some erotic images on their cigarettes' boxes (o'bar). As doctor Carolyn C.Ross emphasizes in her article "The Effects of Early Exposure to Sexual Content", when children are exposed to this sexualized content at early age, even if they do not understand what they see, they have "a lasting" negative impression. When advertisers add those sexual insinuations they give the children an impression of Azouz 3 "Freedom with sex" as Daniel cloud described. The use of sex may lead in the future to sexual addiction by having early sexual relations and a higher number than the normal of sex partners. Also it may contribute in making their sexual life more violent (Ross). Women are highly affected by the sex ads as it degrades them and decreases their self–esteem. However, when the American men answered the call to arms in the Second World War, it was the American women who took over their roles in society. Subsequently, after feminism arose, females were achieving higher rank at work and the beauty myth emerged in attempt to control their growing power (Wolf 21). Engulfed with television and magazine advertisements, the beauty importance issue was propagated drastically. Furthermore, they were shown the "perfect" appearance they should aspire to; the ideal attitude toward society and themselves they should possess. The old "wisdom" claims sex sells, and it proved itself truthful over the time. Advertising sends a powerful message to women about how they should look and behave, which causes severe problems in society. After the World War II ended, the War Manpower Commission hoped the women would return to their "social place" again, but they were wrong (Wolf 63). Still, in 1950s female magazines redefined the housewife status, where the woman would strive for perfection in being a terrific wife, mother and still handle the household flawlessly (Wolf 64).
