Charles Dickens Ambition
The circumstances someone is exposed to can construct their ambitions and motives. The protagonist in the novel, Pip, begins the novel as a young,
common boy who desires to pursue his vague goal of becoming a gentleman because he is unhappy with his current status. Throughout his
transformation, he meets a young and heartless girl named Estella in which everything he did in his life was no longer for himself but for Estella. Once
he attains his goal, he comes to the realization that his ambition did not bring him any happiness. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Dickens
portrays how different social groups are delineated in the Victorian Era, 19th century England. In the novel, Dickens closely follows the inner growth
of a protagonist from his childhood as an indigent to middle age as he commutes with the wealthy. Dickens effectively elucidates how social class has
a direct connection to moral behavior, how one develops shame of his own roots, and the affection of wealth. Being raised in a high class can

His world used to be the marshes and Joe but now he perceives himself as inferior to the wealthy Miss Havisham and Estella. His new position of
wealth and delusive power has outgrown his love for Joe. Pip evolved an obsession with the infamous Estella. He desired becoming a gentleman only
to become worthy enough to win Estella's heart. To Pip, there was no question that Estella would love him as a poor, common blacksmith's boy. It
was Pip's duty to make his fortune or in this case, have a fortune made for him. He came to a realization that wealth and becoming a gentleman are the
only two things that will make a relationship with her feasible. In addition, not only does Pip's behavior change toward others, but other's behavior
changes towards Pip. When Pip finds out about his expectations, people in town, including Mr. pumblechook no longer treat him as a common boy, in
the hope that they too will

Charles Dickens Contributions
Charles Dickens was born on February seventh 1812. He was sent to school at the age of nine which was lucky for him, but was soon taken out
because his father, John Dickens was imprisoned for bad debt. Charles's entire family, except for Charles, was sent to Marshalsea. Charles on the
other hand was sent to work at Warren's blacking factory. During these three years he faced loneliness and despair. After these three years, he was
returned back to school but these years of his life were never forgotten, and he fictionalized them in his novels David Copperfield and Great
Expectations. He started his career as an author like many others did as a journalist. In 1833 he became a parliamentary journalist for The Morning
Chronicle. In April 1836 he married Catherine Hogarth, and in the same month came the publication of Pickwick Papers. He spent a whole lot of time
abroad, lecturing in the United States about slavery and touring Italy with his friends, Augustus Egg and Wilkie Collins. In 1870 Charles died of a
stroke, leaving his final, unfinished novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. He is buried in Westminister Abbey London.Charles Dickens work as an
author has been influenced by him having to work as a young child alone in a factory, by society's problems, and what he has seen around him. Some
of Dickens' work is inspired by the poor conditions people, especially children living in London had to deal with. His book, A Christmas Carol,
reflects this by showing all the

Charles Dickens ' Great Expectations
Charles Dickens He was one of England 's greatest authors of the 1800 's, better known as the Victorian era. The various themes and ideas of that
time are perfectly showcased in his many novels and short stories, such as Nicholas Nickelby, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two
Cities, and A Christmas Carol. Much of the inspiration for these works came from the trials and conflicts that he dealt with in his own life. His
volumes of fictional writing show the great empathy with which he regarded the poor people of his time. His name was Charles Dickens. The
Victorian Era was a time of social upheaval, booming manufacturing industries, and new worldviews on many topics. For the rich it was generally a
prosperous time, but the poor and destitute were subject to many vulgar occupations and experiences ("English Victorian Society"). Dickens himself
underwent numerous hard times, and showed his understanding for the impoverished in his collection of books. A large portion of Dickens '
inspiration for his works, namely Great Expectations, Nicholas Nickelby, and Oliver Twist, came from his own childhood and adolescence. He was
born Charles John Huffam Dickens to parents John and Elizabeth on February 7, 1812. Charles was the second of their eight children. When he was a
child, his family employed two servants. One was named Mary Weller and she was instrumental in Charles ' life. She told him

Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol
Can Charles Dickens be considered one of the "greatest writers of all time?" Many think yes, definitely. But what else could he be honored for?
Charles Dickens is one of many well known authors, and that is credited to his various books, such as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, and many
more. Through all of Dickens's momentous writings, he has influenced the modern world in many forms, from the way we see certain phrases, to the
way we see people affected by poverty. Many of Dickens's books are still studied in schools today, one of those being A Christmas Carol, in which he
talks about England being smothered in snow. As a result of the phrase "A White Christmas," Dickens has popularized the idea of a perfect, snowy

Remembering Charles Dickens Charles Dickens is a famous author who wrote numerous books which were enjoyed by many throughout the years. His
books are known xquisite characters and real–life settings. Charles experienced difficult times as a young boy ("Charles Dickens" par. 7). These difficult
times followed him throughout his life. He uses ideas from these struggles to express his feelings through the books he writes. The many struggles of
Charles Dickens' early childhood greatly influenced his writing, making him a great novelist from the Victorian times. Charles Dickens had many early

8). When his father was released from prison, Charles went to Wellington House Academy where he Broussard 2 attended school from 1824 to
1827 until his dad was imprisoned again for debt. He expresses these feelings of despair and loneliness in his novels and short stories. Many of these
pieces, like "Great Expectations" and "Oliver Twist", reference the poor and the oppressed (Merriman par. 5). Charles Dickens' novel "A Christmas
Carol" displays his feelings about being poor during Christmas time. Charles references Scrooge's nephew as a poor child, and Scrooge asks his
nephew what he has to be merry about when he doesn't have any money (Dickens, "A Christmas Carol" 4). "The forces that inspired Dickens to
create a powerful, impressive and enduring tale were the profoundly humiliating experiences of his childhood, the plight of the poor, and their
children during the boom decades of the 1830s and 1840s" (A Christmas Carol par. 5). Charles' family grew up poor and Christmas time is typically not
a good time for people who do not have money. Dickens used his story "A Christmas Carol" to voice his feelings about the poor during Christmas time
while he was growing up ("A Christmas Carol" par. 4). Charles Dickens uses people from his life as character references for his books. For example,
Charles uses his childhood memories of his father as one of the character references in "A Christmas Carol". "While Dickens'

Does One 's Environment Have the Ability to Blacken the Soul?
"With difficulty, on her knees, drew from her bosom a white handkerchief– Rose May–lie 's own – and holding it up, in her folded hands, as high
towards Heaven as her feeble strength would allow, breathed one [last] prayer for mercy towards her Maker" (Oliver Twist, Dickens 302 revised).
Throughout Oliver Twist,Charles Dickens uses his characters and props to symbolize purity, even though the environment would seem to denote
everything and everyone. Incontro–vertibly, some certainly conform to their environment; for example, as part of the lower class, Fagin and Sikes turn
to thieving, lying, and even murder, instead of earning an honest living. Throughout the first half of the book, Dickens leads one to believe Nancy
follows the same pat–tern. However, as the plot develops, the reader 's theories and opinions transform. Continuing on, the reader will find the answer
to the dispute Dickens constantly toys with; does one 's environ–ment have the ability to blacken the soul and affect one 's choices?
Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, on the Southern coast of England. He was brought up in a poor household so indebted that his father, John
Dickens, was sent to jail. In 1827, at the age of 15, Dickens was working, attending the theater, and taking acting lessons. In 1836 (age 24), Dickens
published his very first book entitled Sketches by Boz. This was the be–ginning. Dickens flourished in his new writing career

Charles Dickens ' Great Expectations
Many people say that writing is nothing more than a way of the author to express himself. This is true in many cases but none as much as in Great
Expectations. In many ways the narrator/protagonist Pip is Charles Dickens in body and mind. While there are many differences between the story
and Charles Dickens life there remains one constant. This constant is the way Pip as the narrator feels, because these feelings are Dickens 's own
feelings about the life he lead. Since Great Expectations was written towards end of Charles Dickens life, he was wiser and able to make out the
mistakes and regrets of his life, and Pip experiences them all. While Great Expectations is seen as a tragic book not many people really think about
where these themes come from, and when the book is read with the knowledge of Dickens life it truly reveals new meanings.
Charles John Huffam Dickens born February 7th, 1812, was born a poor man. When Charles Dickens was 12 his father John Dickens was sent to jail
because he had too much debt. Since Charles father was sent to jail Charles had to drop out of school and join a shoe–blacking company. When
Charles no longer had to work he felt betrayed by his parents for making him do what was their rightful job, taking care of the family. He thought that
the second he started working for that company his youth was gone. Once his father had received the family inheritance Charles was able to go to
school again and his father was released from jail. When

Charles Dickens Happiness
Charles Dickens once said: "Happiness is a gift and the trick is to not expect it, but to delight in it when it comes." Within his novels and movies,
Dicken makes his advice come true. Dickens wrote many pieces based on the Victorian Era. The Victorian Era is a period of Queen Victoria's reign
in Britain. This era is made up of great prosperity and peace, as well as change. There are many distant characteristics that make up the Victorian Era:
some of which are marriage and family values, education, and class distinction. With remembrance of the quote above––through many of these
characteristics, happiness was not a factor until it slapped the characters in the face. Eventually, they delighted in the happiness that they were given.

In Dicken's Great Expectations, Pip knew how to read and write; however, his guardian, Joe, did not. This was shown when Pip tried to teach Joe
how to read while sitting near a river. He would write on a chalk board and help Joe to try to sound out the words. Also, these schools were
creativity–free zones. Even the windows were placed high on the walls so that the children could not look out of them! In Hard Times, Mr.
Gradgrind created a school. His main goal was to base the school primarily on facts. Creativity and wondering were never allowed. The novel
opens with Mr. Gradgrind's words: "NOW, WHAT I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts" (1). Many children are in this
school and they are taught based upon absolutely nothing but facts. With this in mind, creativity and wondering are limited, resulting in the lack of
knowing how to deal with feelings. Louisa drastically portrays the terrible effect of this teaching, She cries to her dad saying, "I do not know that I
am sorry, I do not know that I am ashamed, I do not know that I am degraded in my own esteem. All that I know is, your philosophy and your
teaching will not save me" (164). She also says "What I have learned has left me doubting, misbelieving, despising, regretting, what I have not learned"
(162). Because Louisa was taught a philosophy of fact and fact only, she does not know emotion.

The Life of Charles Dickens Charles Dickens, a man of good humor, once said: "If there were no bad people, there would be no good lawyers"
(Charles Dickens quote). Throughout his novels Dickens wove humor and wit, as well as including messages of poverty and charity that remain
relevant to modern society. These themes came from childhood experiences such as, his father's sentence to Marshalea debtor's prison,
consequently forcing Charles into the role of the head of his household. Making the very fast and unexpected transition from childhood to
adulthood impacted his writing and is where he derived inspiration for novels such as, David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol, and Great
Expectations. David Copperfield's, Mr. Micawber is based off of Dickens's father, John; both were arrested for debt. Also, the main character,
David, and Charles both held jobs placing labels onto bottles as children. Only Charles pasted labels onto pots instead of bottles. As a result, Dickens
felt his innocence was prematurely taken. He later reflected, "How [he] could be so easily cast away at such a young age" (Charles Dickens

goodness. This most likely the reason as to why Dickens allowed him to realize his selfishness and greed after seeing spirits from the past, present, and

Charles Dickens Issues
Charles Dickens was a champion of the abused poor on account of his repulsive experience when he was compelled to work in a processing plant as
a child.[citation needed] (His dad, John Dickens, ceaselessly lived past his methods and in the long run went to indebted individuals' jail. Charles was
compelled to leave school and started working ten–hour days at Warren's Blacking Warehouse, acquiring six shillings a week.)[citation needed] His
sensitivities, in any case, lie with the progressives just to a limited degree; he censures the crowd franticness which soon sets in. At the point when
lunatics and ladies slaughter eleven hundred prisoners in one night and hustle back to hone their weapons on the grindstone, they show "eyes which
any unbrutalized viewer would have given a quarter century life, to petrify with an all around coordinated firearm". The reader is demonstrated that the

The lower classes don't have any organization in this similitude: they essentially respond to the conduct of the gentry. In this sense it can be said that
while Dickens sympathizes with poor people, he relates to the rich: they are the book's group of onlookers, its "us" and not its "them". "Pulverize

Scrooge doesn't give him enough coal for a bigger fire. Scrooge's nephew, Fred, pays his uncle a visit to say Merry Christmas and invite him to his

dreary, cold chamber, Scrooge receives a chilling visitation from the ghost of his dead partner, Jacob Marley. As punishment for his greedy and
self–serving life his spirit has been condemned to wander the Earth, weighted down with heavy chains. Marley hopes to save Scrooge from sharing

Charles Dickens's Effect On the Lives of Millions
Charles Dickens wanted his novels to impact the aspects of life for the people at the time, not just in the classroom today. In order to execute this
process, we must answer two questions. How much did Dickens novels effect the people and quality of life at the time? We need to know how the
novels were perceived then, using sources such as secondary literature, we can glean a greater understanding. The second question is that we must
explore how this compares to his novels decades later. Charles's works were, to say the least, extremely impactful, creating many points for the critique
of his society.

Even Queen Victoria read his novels with furor. He wrote books such as the previously mentioned Oliver Twist, Little Dorrit, David Copperfield, Hard

Commission of Inquiry into children's employment in 1840. In the early stages of the copious quantities of labor reform for children, there were many
dissenting opinions. Factory Owners concurred that factory work was beneficial to both the children and their families, who were usually nonexistent
or dirt–poor. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, recommended child labor as a means of preventing youthful idleness and vice.
Dickens was able to live long enough to see all of his work come to fruition. The two laws that heavily attacked the child labor industry, The
Regulation of Child Labor Law of 1833 (which established paid inspectors to enforce the laws) and the Ten Hours Bill of 1847 (which limited
working hours to 10 for children and women) both bolstered the wellbeing of all people of the time. They provided jobs for the Inspectors, and saved

Charles Dickens Utilitarianism
Charles Dickens was not just an author of the book "Hard Times" which is a sequel of three books during the Victorian period. Dickens illustrated a
utilitarian lifestyle of hardship in an industrial world. The literature and contextual realism of the book gives fact of real world issues though a fictional
work. He wrote to not only show the effects of the utilitarianism and industrialism demonstrated in the novel, but he also shows that there can be change
in this ordainment through individuals. Although all of the characters are psychologically distorted and damaged in some way without respect to the
fumes of the industrial factories, Louisa provides the means of change through her own struggle and hardship. Louisa shows the means of change
through her family household, but this does not aide the society of change of the utilitarian control and education. Charles Dickens, "born on February
2, 1812, in Portsmouth, England" according to The Critical Companion to Charles Dickens, grew up in agonizing poverty. This was in the very midst
of child labor and parents would often send their children to work by age 3–5. (Davis 3). Moreover, at 12 years old, Charles Dickens "was sent to work
at a shoe polish factory" and worked there for less than a year. (Davis 3). There was no room for childhood play and laughter as he was working day
in and day out for support of his family with little wages. In Critical Insights, Eugene Goodheart presumes that "the humiliation and disgust

Charles Dickens Struggles
During the Victorian era, which spanned from 1837 to 1901 under the reign of Queen Victoria, there was a great growth in the industry and in
prosperity for Great Britain, and coupled with this growth was another in the social classes, particularly with an emphasis on the fine upper class. This
growth of focus on the upper class and subsequently the lack of focus on the poor lower class were brought to the attention of author Charles Dickens,
and he, one of many times, chronicles the ideals of social classes in his acclaimed 1860–1861 work entitled Great Expectations. The novel follows the

In the Victorian era, poverty became due to many reasons; a population increase, the search of employment, and a depressing state of the shortage of
housing. All of these points had a direct impact to why there was the less fortunate in an English society. The nineteenth century saw a huge growth
in the population of Great Britain, and this brought the poverty line lower and lower in cities such as London. Dickens, being affected by this, had a
great impact on helping the less fortunate in the Victorian time period by bringing to life the realism of the problems that the paupers, criminals, and
just plain poor people had. He did this through showing how the wealthy treated the poor with no respect and with cruelty through his characters such
as Mr. Bumble and Mrs. Sowerberry in Oliver Twist. Although, Dickens brings attention to how not all upper or middle class people were always
cruel to the poor, through his characters in Oliver Twist such as Mr. Sowerberry, who was quite kind to Oliver and was uneasy about being cross with
him. Along with poverty being such an issue, there were also the unwealthy dysfunctional families of the Victorian time period.
Charles Dickens grew up in a home where money was never a concern, until his father went bankrupt and he was abandoned by his family which
ultimately led to Dickens being a poor orphaned boy. Dickens's dysfunctional family must have led to such families as

Unlike most radical newspapers such as the Poor Man's Guardian and The Gauntlet, the True Sun did pay the 4d. stamp duty.
Despite having to charge the heavy tax imposed on newspapers, the True Sun sold 30,000 copies a day. In his articles, Dickens used his considerable
knowledge of what went on in the House of Commons to help promote the cause of parliamentary reform. Charles Dickens was pleased when
Parliament eventually agreed to pass the 1832 Reform Act, however, like most radicals, he thought it did not go far enough. The new reformed House
of Commons passed a series of new measures including a reduction in newspaper tax from 4d. to 1d. As a result, the circulation of the True Sun
increased to over 60,000.
In 1833 Dickens had his first story published in the Monthly Magazine. Using the pen–name of 'Boz', Dickens also began contributing short stories to
the Morning Chronicle and the Evening Chronicle. These stories were so popular that they were collected together and published as a book entitled
Sketches by Boz (1836).
The publisher, William Hall, now commissioned Dickens to write The Pickwick Papers in twenty monthly installments. This was followed by Oliver
Twist, published in Bentley's Miscellany (1837–38) and Nicholas Nickleby (1838–39), also published monthly. Dickens was now the most popular

Dickens loved plays and theatre and therefore incorporated them into Pip's life. Dickens died happy in the middle class and Pip died happy in the

It wasn't just friction anymore, there was an intense fire burning. Dickens returned the insults through a character in an new novel, Mrs. Gamp. His
resentment was expressed in harsh humor as Mrs. Gamp was a brutalized victim of society. As a result of the unsophisticated public fighting Dickens'
publishers reduced his year off salary (Swisher). Dickens' personal life is not to be forgotten. He married Catherine Hogarth, his co–worker's daughter,
in 1836. Together they had ten kids but separated in 1858 after he slept with her sister ("Biography of"). However, while they were happily married
Dickens made a point to fill his home with daily pranks and practical jokes. In 1836 he started getting his family together and performing plays for
friends in his home. Each year the plays became more elaborate and finally they started offering them to the public; all profits were donated to
charities (Swisher). Dickens had a pet raven he named Grip. When Grip died in 1841 Dickens stuffed the bird to keep him around. He also had a secret
study (Carswell). The door was painted and made to look like a bookcase. By 1852 his plays were so big he was able to perform for Queen Victoria
and all profit went to the Guild of Literature and Art (Swisher). The 60's were difficult for Dickens and his health began to decline. His public

Anton was born January 29, 1860, in Taganrog, Russia. While growing up his father, Pavel had problems keeping money while his mother stayed
at home and read stories to Anton and his five siblings. Fifteen years in 1875 later Anton's family moved to Moscow for the closer of his business
although, Anton stayed in Taganrog to finish his schooling. A short four years later in 1879 Chekhov had moved to Moscow to join his family.
While living in Moscow Anton's father was still having financial issues. This problem pushed Anton to try and help his family with money. Anton
started freelance writing for a local magazine for money. In the early 1880's Anton decided to practice medicine in Moscow while publishing
fictional stories. His novel "The Steppe" was awarded the Pushkin Prize in 1888. Chekhov's most famous short stories that he wrote while in
medical school are "Ward No. 6," "An Anonymous Story" and "Peasant." Anton was a very dominant figure in Russia for his realism writings. Anton
Chekhov's greatest work was in the 1980's when he wrote about the understanding of human nature and how ordinary events have deeper meanings.
While into his late years of writing Anton realized that theater and plays was a passion in which he liked to write about. Plays that he wrote are

Charles Dickens
Charles John Huffam Dickens was born February 7, 1812, in Ports Mouth,
Hampshire. In his infancy his family moved to Chatham, where he spent his happiest years and often refers to this time in his novels (1817–1822).
From 1822 to 1860 he lived in London, after which he permanently moved to a quiet country cottage in Glads Hill, on the outskirts of Chatham. He
grew up in a middle class family. His father was a clerk in the navy pay office and was well paid, but his extravagant living style often brought the
family to financial disaster. The family reached financial "rock bottom" in 1824. Charles was taken out of school and sent to work in a factory doing

Within a few months Pickwick was the rage and Dickens was the most popular author of the day. During
1836, he also wrote two plays and a pamphlet, he then resigned from his newspaper job, and undertook the editing job of a monthly magazine,
Bentley's Miscellany, in which he serialized Oliver Twist (1837–1839). By this time, the first of his nine surviving children had been born, He had
married Catherine, eldest daughter of a respected journalist George
Hogorth (April 1836).
Novels
His first major success was with The Pickwick Papers. They were high spirited and contained many conventional comic butts and jokes. Pickwick
displayed, many of the features that were to be blended in to his future fiction works; attacks on social evils and the delight in the joys of
Christmas. Rapidly thought up and written in mere weeks or even days before its publication date, Pickwick contained weak style and was
unsatisfactory in all, partly because Dickens was rapidly developing his craft as a novelist while doing it. This style of writing in a first novel, made
his name know literally overnight, but created a new tradition of literature and was made one of the best know novel's of the world.
After The Pickwick Papers were published in 1837, he put together another novel, Oliver Twist. Though his artistic talent is very much evident, he
refrained from using the successful formula used in The

Great Expectations By Charles Dickens
In the movie series Star Wars we see many different characters. Some of the characters have weird names, and can fight with a light saber. Others
can fight with a blaster, and can speak in strange languages. One thing about the characters is that they are mostly male with a few exceptions. Some
female characters like Leia and Padme tend to play a big role in the adventures that the male characters go on. This seems to be relevant in a lot of
movies and books like the story Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. In Great Expectations there are multiple female characters like Estella, Biddy,
and Miss Havisham who all play a large part in the main character, Pip's life. One of the first that we meet the character Estella in Charles Dickens'
Great Expectations is when Pip goes to Miss Havisham's to play with her. The two kids play the game beggar my neighbor when Estella decides to
express her opinion on Pip's looks. " 'He calls the knaves jacks, this boy!' said Estella with disdain, before our first game was out. 'And what course
hands he has! And what thick boots!' " (Dickens 34). Estella looks down on Pip as he is, a common boy unlike her. She feels superior, and thinks that
she has all the right in the world to treat him like dirt. Pip takes this rather harshly, especially coming from Estella, whom he thinks is very pretty.
Estella's insults hurt Pip at first, but then they encourage hime to become a gentleman. We see many instances of this throughout Great Expectations,

The Childhood of Charles Dickens
"I do not write resentfully or angrily: for I know
all these things have worked together to make me what I am" – Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens's tumultuous childhood did indeed shape the person he became, as
well as have a definite impact on his literary career. There are shades of
young Dickens in many of his most beloved characters, including David
Copperfield, Oliver Twist, and of course, Great Expectations' Pip. Like
Dickens, all three of these characters came from humble beginnings and were able
to rise above their respective circumstances to achieve success. Similarly,

19). This is a lofty pronouncement coming from a lowly government employee, with
neither money nor title to lay claim to. Due to this, Charles "considered
Friday his lucky day, needing to believe he had been born with great
expectations and the talent and will to realize them" (Kaplan 19).
In January of 1817, the Dickens family was transferred to Chatham, in the county
of Kent. It was here that Dickens formed his earliest recollections, residing
there from the ages four through ten. The formative years spent at this place
would later have an impact on his literary career, resurfacing as the setting
for Great Expectations. It was during this time, too, that he first saw Gad's
Hill Place, what would become his future home. He recalls his father telling
him that if he "were to be very persevering and were to work hard [he] might
some day come to live in it" (qtd. in Kaplan 23). He was unaware how prophetic
those words would be. He began his education in Chatham, and soon was
transferred to a local academy run by a clergyman. According to Kaplan, school
"fed his aspirations toward gentility . . . his sense that Gad's Hill Place and
what it represented could be his one day" (31–32). Unfortunately for Charles,

Charles Dickens And The Victorian Era
Charles Dickens and the Victorian Era The various themes and ideas of the Victorian era are perfectly showcased in the many novels and short stories
of Charles Dickens. The writers of the Victorian era produced an enormous amount of the greatest novels to ever be written– those that were "realistic,
thickly plotted, crowded with characters, and long." They, more often than not, showed the characteristics of the different social classes in society.
Generally humorous, most books were targeted to the middle, as they could relate to them the most easily. Dickens ' own works have extensive
plots woven throughout each of them, one in particular being that of Bleak House. That novel is considered to be Dickens ' longest and contains a
grand total of fifty characters, all of which are interconnected by some standard. Its plot surrounds a mysterious murder and lawsuit. A large portion
of Dickens ' inspiration for his works came from his own childhood and adolescence. He was born Charles John Huffam Dickens to parents John and
Elizabeth on February 7, 1812. Charles was the second of their eight children. As a child, the family employed two servants. One was named Mary
Weller, and she was instrumental in Charles ' life. She told him and his siblings made–up stories, which she swore were true, and thus stretched his
imagination and fascination for storytelling. His father was employed as a clerk in the

Fog In Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens diplomatically uses symbolism throughout the novel to portend upcoming conflicts. The horses with "drooping heads and tremulous
tails"(16) struggled to march up the harsh conditions of the lofty hill. The horses embodies King Louis XIV, Queen Marie Antoinette, and aristocrats of
France. The rulers and aristocrats eventually face death due to the dissatisfaction of the people about the dying economy. The horses' drooping heads
epitomizes the King, Queen, and the aristocrats' heads under the guillotine, which leads to their appalling death. As the passengers of the carriage,
along with the horses, trudged up the the precipitous hill, they had to walk through a curtain of fog that was "enough to shut out everything from the
light" (16). The fog best exemplifies the unpredictable future of the aristocrats because they... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the passengers and company hiked up the steep hill, they "mashed their way through the thick mud" (16). The thick mud prefigures the difficulties
and conflicts the aristocrats have to face in the end for ignoring the suffering and poverty of the people around them. The story takes place on a "Friday
night in November, one thousand seven hundred and seventy–five" (17). Dickens chose a night in November because the month has more dark and
gloomy weather and color during the day than luminous and radiant. The month's gloom and darkness foreshadows the many deaths of the aristocrats
and the depression feeling of the lower class. On the Friday night of November, the passengers were "lumbering up Shooter's hill" (17) to get the the
Dover Mail. Shooter's hill is steep, muddy, and sufficient with many obstacles. The hill presages the tough obstacles the upper class will encounter
because of their money and arrogance towards the lower class. The setting is a strategy used by the author to foretell future events and and set a

Dickens, at the beginning of his life, was very optimistic, his novels having "serious themes and plots" but also having "enough humor to keep
[them] entertaining" (Collins). Later on in life, however, Dickens writing became less lighthearted, with his "view of Victorian society, and
perhaps of the world, [having grown] darker" and his "character and plots seem[ing] to emphasize the evil side of human experience" more and
more (Collins). Since Dickens style of writing was mostly influenced by his experiences, this change in style most likely resulted from negative
experiences in his life which every person tends to experience as they get older. Dickens had to abandon some of the optimism that he had held on
to in youth, which is something that usually happens as one experience life more and the weight of the world is felt more on one's shoulders. In
Dickens case, this weight was Victorian society and all its vices which he had high hopes to escape from when on "on January 4, 1842, Dickens
and his wife boarded the steamer Britannia" to go to Boston in America (Lepore). Dickens, like most people at the time, probably had an ideal
picture of America and most likely saw the country as a paradise against some of the old world's plagues and problems. When he arrived at America
his fantasies were not met, and he would often write home saying things like "this is not the Republic [he] came to see" and how "this [was] not the
Republic of [his] imagination"(Lepore).

Charles Dickens Beliefs
Charles Dickens is a well known name, most commonly associated with the classic Christmas novel, A Christmas Carol. However, there are numerous
elements about him not as widely known. For instance, Dickens' view of Christianity were eccentric, and he was passionate about social reform in his
time. Some of his lesser known writings and works attest to this. Regardless of his beliefs, he has had an enduring impact on the world.
Charles Dickens was a different type of Christian. Contrary to most, he saw no importance in tradition and scripture. He disliked every form of
organized Christianity, especially evangelicalism and Roman Catholicism. His writing consisted of only the most generic form of Christianity,
never specifying denomination or other. This is because Charles Dickens himself only believed that there was God, as in a higher authority. He
also viewed Jesus as a comforter of the distressed, not as the savior of mankind. Due to his beliefs, Charles Dickens took it upon himself to write
The Life of Our Lord, his own simplified translation of the Gospels. His beliefs and actions were far from what is considered Christian today. Though
Dickens' beliefs may not have been traditional in his time or the modern era of today, he proved to be morally strong and stood out as a passionate
social reformer. Dickens' views on society were established at a young age. Beginning at age 12, Dickens was forced to work at a shoe–blacking

Charles Dickens Doubling Quotes
The motif of doubling has been repeatedly shown throughout the book. Charles Dickens finds numerous ways to show the constant pattern of
doubling from using children, to using exact metaphors. Life could either be one way or the other. Factors in life an either duplicate themselves
or oppose themselves. He uses this repeated motif to emphasize the theme of life being a parallel universe. The prominent quote in Book 1, is the
perfect example of how he does it" it was the best of times, it was the worst of times." This well known quote continues on by saying " it was the
age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season
of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we have nothing before us...." Everything Dickens
describes opposes the other. Another way dickens shows doubling is by comparing their children to their parents. The first pair he compares is
Jimmy Cruncher and his son. Jerry Cruncher, also known as the resurrection man is a grave robber in the book. His son Young Jerry follows him
one night and sees what Jerry does. The next day he asks his father and informs that he wants to be like his father when he grows up. This shows
doubling in more than one way. Initially, his name is Young Jerry. Secondly, he wants to follow in his father's footsteps. Another child to parent pair is
Young Lucie Manette and her mother Lucie. Lucie Manette grew up without a father, he was in prison. When he was released she was all grown up,
however she didn't let that affect their father–daughter relationship. As Lucie grows up and marries a man named Charles Darnay, they have a girl
named Lucie, in other words, Young Lucie. Charles Darnay flees to France and ends up in prison, trying to resolve the issue the Manettes beg for
mercy but none is granted. This shows the pattern of doubling because now Young Lucie will experience growing up without a father, just like her
mother did. Dickens also shows the compare and contrast side of doubling by comparing Lucie Manette and Madame Defarge. Both characters have
completely different life styles. Lucie lives is London and is

Charles Dickens Ambition

  • 1. Charles Dickens Ambition The circumstances someone is exposed to can construct their ambitions and motives. The protagonist in the novel, Pip, begins the novel as a young, common boy who desires to pursue his vague goal of becoming a gentleman because he is unhappy with his current status. Throughout his transformation, he meets a young and heartless girl named Estella in which everything he did in his life was no longer for himself but for Estella. Once he attains his goal, he comes to the realization that his ambition did not bring him any happiness. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Dickens portrays how different social groups are delineated in the Victorian Era, 19th century England. In the novel, Dickens closely follows the inner growth of a protagonist from his childhood as an indigent to middle age as he commutes with the wealthy. Dickens effectively elucidates how social class has a direct connection to moral behavior, how one develops shame of his own roots, and the affection of wealth. Being raised in a high class can transmute someone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His world used to be the marshes and Joe but now he perceives himself as inferior to the wealthy Miss Havisham and Estella. His new position of wealth and delusive power has outgrown his love for Joe. Pip evolved an obsession with the infamous Estella. He desired becoming a gentleman only to become worthy enough to win Estella's heart. To Pip, there was no question that Estella would love him as a poor, common blacksmith's boy. It was Pip's duty to make his fortune or in this case, have a fortune made for him. He came to a realization that wealth and becoming a gentleman are the only two things that will make a relationship with her feasible. In addition, not only does Pip's behavior change toward others, but other's behavior changes towards Pip. When Pip finds out about his expectations, people in town, including Mr. pumblechook no longer treat him as a common boy, in the hope that they too will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Charles Dickens Contributions Charles Dickens was born on February seventh 1812. He was sent to school at the age of nine which was lucky for him, but was soon taken out because his father, John Dickens was imprisoned for bad debt. Charles's entire family, except for Charles, was sent to Marshalsea. Charles on the other hand was sent to work at Warren's blacking factory. During these three years he faced loneliness and despair. After these three years, he was returned back to school but these years of his life were never forgotten, and he fictionalized them in his novels David Copperfield and Great Expectations. He started his career as an author like many others did as a journalist. In 1833 he became a parliamentary journalist for The Morning Chronicle. In April 1836 he married Catherine Hogarth, and in the same month came the publication of Pickwick Papers. He spent a whole lot of time abroad, lecturing in the United States about slavery and touring Italy with his friends, Augustus Egg and Wilkie Collins. In 1870 Charles died of a stroke, leaving his final, unfinished novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. He is buried in Westminister Abbey London.Charles Dickens work as an author has been influenced by him having to work as a young child alone in a factory, by society's problems, and what he has seen around him. Some of Dickens' work is inspired by the poor conditions people, especially children living in London had to deal with. His book, A Christmas Carol, reflects this by showing all the ... • 3. Charles Dickens ' Great Expectations Charles Dickens He was one of England 's greatest authors of the 1800 's, better known as the Victorian era. The various themes and ideas of that time are perfectly showcased in his many novels and short stories, such as Nicholas Nickelby, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, and A Christmas Carol. Much of the inspiration for these works came from the trials and conflicts that he dealt with in his own life. His volumes of fictional writing show the great empathy with which he regarded the poor people of his time. His name was Charles Dickens. The Victorian Era was a time of social upheaval, booming manufacturing industries, and new worldviews on many topics. For the rich it was generally a prosperous time, but the poor and destitute were subject to many vulgar occupations and experiences ("English Victorian Society"). Dickens himself underwent numerous hard times, and showed his understanding for the impoverished in his collection of books. A large portion of Dickens ' inspiration for his works, namely Great Expectations, Nicholas Nickelby, and Oliver Twist, came from his own childhood and adolescence. He was born Charles John Huffam Dickens to parents John and Elizabeth on February 7, 1812. Charles was the second of their eight children. When he was a child, his family employed two servants. One was named Mary Weller and she was instrumental in Charles ' life. She told him ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol Can Charles Dickens be considered one of the "greatest writers of all time?" Many think yes, definitely. But what else could he be honored for? Charles Dickens is one of many well known authors, and that is credited to his various books, such as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, and many more. Through all of Dickens's momentous writings, he has influenced the modern world in many forms, from the way we see certain phrases, to the way we see people affected by poverty. Many of Dickens's books are still studied in schools today, one of those being A Christmas Carol, in which he talks about England being smothered in snow. As a result of the phrase "A White Christmas," Dickens has popularized the idea of a perfect, snowy Christmas throughout ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Charles Dickens ' A Great Writer Alex Broussard Broussard 1 Coach Masson English 2/ hour 3 8 October 2015 Remembering Charles Dickens Charles Dickens is a famous author who wrote numerous books which were enjoyed by many throughout the years. His books are known xquisite characters and real–life settings. Charles experienced difficult times as a young boy ("Charles Dickens" par. 7). These difficult times followed him throughout his life. He uses ideas from these struggles to express his feelings through the books he writes. The many struggles of Charles Dickens' early childhood greatly influenced his writing, making him a great novelist from the Victorian times. Charles Dickens had many early life struggles. His father was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 8). When his father was released from prison, Charles went to Wellington House Academy where he Broussard 2 attended school from 1824 to 1827 until his dad was imprisoned again for debt. He expresses these feelings of despair and loneliness in his novels and short stories. Many of these pieces, like "Great Expectations" and "Oliver Twist", reference the poor and the oppressed (Merriman par. 5). Charles Dickens' novel "A Christmas Carol" displays his feelings about being poor during Christmas time. Charles references Scrooge's nephew as a poor child, and Scrooge asks his nephew what he has to be merry about when he doesn't have any money (Dickens, "A Christmas Carol" 4). "The forces that inspired Dickens to create a powerful, impressive and enduring tale were the profoundly humiliating experiences of his childhood, the plight of the poor, and their children during the boom decades of the 1830s and 1840s" (A Christmas Carol par. 5). Charles' family grew up poor and Christmas time is typically not a good time for people who do not have money. Dickens used his story "A Christmas Carol" to voice his feelings about the poor during Christmas time while he was growing up ("A Christmas Carol" par. 4). Charles Dickens uses people from his life as character references for his books. For example, Charles uses his childhood memories of his father as one of the character references in "A Christmas Carol". "While Dickens' ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Analysis Of Charles Dickens 's ' Dickens ' Does One 's Environment Have the Ability to Blacken the Soul? "With difficulty, on her knees, drew from her bosom a white handkerchief– Rose May–lie 's own – and holding it up, in her folded hands, as high towards Heaven as her feeble strength would allow, breathed one [last] prayer for mercy towards her Maker" (Oliver Twist, Dickens 302 revised). Throughout Oliver Twist,Charles Dickens uses his characters and props to symbolize purity, even though the environment would seem to denote everything and everyone. Incontro–vertibly, some certainly conform to their environment; for example, as part of the lower class, Fagin and Sikes turn to thieving, lying, and even murder, instead of earning an honest living. Throughout the first half of the book, Dickens leads one to believe Nancy follows the same pat–tern. However, as the plot develops, the reader 's theories and opinions transform. Continuing on, the reader will find the answer to the dispute Dickens constantly toys with; does one 's environ–ment have the ability to blacken the soul and affect one 's choices? Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, on the Southern coast of England. He was brought up in a poor household so indebted that his father, John Dickens, was sent to jail. In 1827, at the age of 15, Dickens was working, attending the theater, and taking acting lessons. In 1836 (age 24), Dickens published his very first book entitled Sketches by Boz. This was the be–ginning. Dickens flourished in his new writing career ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Charles Dickens ' Great Expectations Many people say that writing is nothing more than a way of the author to express himself. This is true in many cases but none as much as in Great Expectations. In many ways the narrator/protagonist Pip is Charles Dickens in body and mind. While there are many differences between the story and Charles Dickens life there remains one constant. This constant is the way Pip as the narrator feels, because these feelings are Dickens 's own feelings about the life he lead. Since Great Expectations was written towards end of Charles Dickens life, he was wiser and able to make out the mistakes and regrets of his life, and Pip experiences them all. While Great Expectations is seen as a tragic book not many people really think about where these themes come from, and when the book is read with the knowledge of Dickens life it truly reveals new meanings. Charles John Huffam Dickens born February 7th, 1812, was born a poor man. When Charles Dickens was 12 his father John Dickens was sent to jail because he had too much debt. Since Charles father was sent to jail Charles had to drop out of school and join a shoe–blacking company. When Charles no longer had to work he felt betrayed by his parents for making him do what was their rightful job, taking care of the family. He thought that the second he started working for that company his youth was gone. Once his father had received the family inheritance Charles was able to go to school again and his father was released from jail. When ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Charles Dickens Happiness Charles Dickens once said: "Happiness is a gift and the trick is to not expect it, but to delight in it when it comes." Within his novels and movies, Dicken makes his advice come true. Dickens wrote many pieces based on the Victorian Era. The Victorian Era is a period of Queen Victoria's reign in Britain. This era is made up of great prosperity and peace, as well as change. There are many distant characteristics that make up the Victorian Era: some of which are marriage and family values, education, and class distinction. With remembrance of the quote above––through many of these characteristics, happiness was not a factor until it slapped the characters in the face. Eventually, they delighted in the happiness that they were given. Within Charles... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Dicken's Great Expectations, Pip knew how to read and write; however, his guardian, Joe, did not. This was shown when Pip tried to teach Joe how to read while sitting near a river. He would write on a chalk board and help Joe to try to sound out the words. Also, these schools were creativity–free zones. Even the windows were placed high on the walls so that the children could not look out of them! In Hard Times, Mr. Gradgrind created a school. His main goal was to base the school primarily on facts. Creativity and wondering were never allowed. The novel opens with Mr. Gradgrind's words: "NOW, WHAT I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts" (1). Many children are in this school and they are taught based upon absolutely nothing but facts. With this in mind, creativity and wondering are limited, resulting in the lack of knowing how to deal with feelings. Louisa drastically portrays the terrible effect of this teaching, She cries to her dad saying, "I do not know that I am sorry, I do not know that I am ashamed, I do not know that I am degraded in my own esteem. All that I know is, your philosophy and your teaching will not save me" (164). She also says "What I have learned has left me doubting, misbelieving, despising, regretting, what I have not learned" (162). Because Louisa was taught a philosophy of fact and fact only, she does not know emotion. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"He had no further intercourse with Spirits, but lived upon the Total Abstinence Principle, ever afterwards; and it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. Charles Dickens Research Paper Early Life Charles John Huffam Dickens was born at 13 Mile End Terrace, Portsea, Portsmouth, the 4th day of the second month as the second child to John and Elizabeth Dickens (EBSCOhost). Dickens sadly became the eldest child when his older sister died in 1820 (Britannica). In the year 1822, the whole Dickens household moved their belongings to Camden Town, London (Biography.com). Charles schooling was interrupted in 1824 when his father was put in prison for his unpaid debt (Dickens Fellowship). Because of this, Dickens was forced to pick up the slack (British Library). Dickens earned 6 shillings a week at his new job (Biography.com). When Dickens' father was released from prison, his mother asked him to keep working because he gave them good money. Because of this, Dickens grew to despise his mother (Britannica). Dickens went back to school and is getting a good education, for the meantime (Dickens Fellowship). In the year ... • 11. Charles Dickens Research Paper The Life of Charles Dickens Charles Dickens, a man of good humor, once said: "If there were no bad people, there would be no good lawyers" (Charles Dickens quote). Throughout his novels Dickens wove humor and wit, as well as including messages of poverty and charity that remain relevant to modern society. These themes came from childhood experiences such as, his father's sentence to Marshalea debtor's prison, consequently forcing Charles into the role of the head of his household. Making the very fast and unexpected transition from childhood to adulthood impacted his writing and is where he derived inspiration for novels such as, David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol, and Great Expectations. David Copperfield's, Mr. Micawber is based off of Dickens's father, John; both were arrested for debt. Also, the main character, David, and Charles both held jobs placing labels onto bottles as children. Only Charles pasted labels onto pots instead of bottles. As a result, Dickens felt his innocence was prematurely taken. He later reflected, "How [he] could be so easily cast away at such a young age" (Charles Dickens –Biography). All of these points had a direct impact to why there was the less fortunate in an English society. The nineteenth century saw a huge growth in the population of Great Britain, and this brought the poverty line lower and lower in cities such as London. Dickens, being affected by this, had a great impact on helping the less fortunate in the Victorian time period by bringing to life the realism of the problems that the paupers, criminals, and just plain poor people had. Some female characters like Leia and Padme tend to play a big role in the adventures that the male characters go on. " 'He calls the knaves jacks, this boy!' said Estella with disdain, before our first game was out. 'And what course hands he has! And what thick boots!' " (Dickens 34). Estella looks down on Pip as he is, a common boy unlike her. She feels superior, and thinks that she has all the right in the world to treat him like dirt. • 34. Charles Dickens And The Victorian Era Charles Dickens and the Victorian Era The various themes and ideas of the Victorian era are perfectly showcased in the many novels and short stories of Charles Dickens. The writers of the Victorian era produced an enormous amount of the greatest novels to ever be written– those that were "realistic, thickly plotted, crowded with characters, and long." They, more often than not, showed the characteristics of the different social classes in society. Generally humorous, most books were targeted to the middle, as they could relate to them the most easily. Dickens ' own works have extensive plots woven throughout each of them, one in particular being that of Bleak House. That novel is considered to be Dickens ' longest and contains a grand total of fifty characters, all of which are interconnected by some standard. Its plot surrounds a mysterious murder and lawsuit. A large portion of Dickens ' inspiration for his works came from his own childhood and adolescence. He was born Charles John Huffam Dickens to parents John and Elizabeth on February 7, 1812. Charles was the second of their eight children. As a child, the family employed two servants. One was named Mary Weller, and she was instrumental in Charles ' life. She told him and his siblings made–up stories, which she swore were true, and thus stretched his imagination and fascination for storytelling. His father was employed as a clerk in the ... • 35. Fog In Charles Dickens Charles Dickens diplomatically uses symbolism throughout the novel to portend upcoming conflicts. The horses with "drooping heads and tremulous tails"(16) struggled to march up the harsh conditions of the lofty hill. The horses embodies King Louis XIV, Queen Marie Antoinette, and aristocrats of France. The rulers and aristocrats eventually face death due to the dissatisfaction of the people about the dying economy. The horses' drooping heads epitomizes the King, Queen, and the aristocrats' heads under the guillotine, which leads to their appalling death. As the passengers of the carriage, along with the horses, trudged up the the precipitous hill, they had to walk through a curtain of fog that was "enough to shut out everything from the light" (16). The fog best exemplifies the unpredictable future of the aristocrats because they... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the passengers and company hiked up the steep hill, they "mashed their way through the thick mud" (16). The thick mud prefigures the difficulties and conflicts the aristocrats have to face in the end for ignoring the suffering and poverty of the people around them. The story takes place on a "Friday night in November, one thousand seven hundred and seventy–five" (17). Dickens chose a night in November because the month has more dark and gloomy weather and color during the day than luminous and radiant. The month's gloom and darkness foreshadows the many deaths of the aristocrats and the depression feeling of the lower class. On the Friday night of November, the passengers were "lumbering up Shooter's hill" (17) to get the the Dover Mail. Shooter's hill is steep, muddy, and sufficient with many obstacles. The hill presages the tough obstacles the upper class will encounter because of their money and arrogance towards the lower class. The setting is a strategy used by the author to foretell future events and and set a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He would have people killed for rebellious things that they had done. He even killed people because they believed in somethings that he didn 't approve. When they were killed, he would hang them from the light poles so that the people could see what he would do. So, when they killed him they stuffed his mouth with grass and hung him for the light pole just like he did to the loved ones of many people. "Defarge arrives bearing news of the capture of Foulon, a wealthy man who once declared that if people were starving they should eat grass" (Dickens 295). Even though he did kill all the people whether it was a direct death or it was by an action he didn 't deserve to die because of revenge. He should have been put in jail or he should have been hung. That would have been the proper way to get revenge. Third, the plot against Lucie and Little Lucie. There was a plot against Lucie and little Lucie because they were aristocrats. The plot against them was because Lucie was the daughter of Doctor Manette who then married Charles Darnay and the had a girl named Little Lucie. The plot against them is significant because Charles is put on trial for being an emigrant aristocrat, but is quickly taken out of jail because of Lucie's father being Doctor Manette. This is frowned apon by many people during this time and it is a reason why people would want to get revenge because he had a big secret kept from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dickens, at the beginning of his life, was very optimistic, his novels having "serious themes and plots" but also having "enough humor to keep [them] entertaining" (Collins). Later on in life, however, Dickens writing became less lighthearted, with his "view of Victorian society, and perhaps of the world, [having grown] darker" and his "character and plots seem[ing] to emphasize the evil side of human experience" more and more (Collins). Since Dickens style of writing was mostly influenced by his experiences, this change in style most likely resulted from negative experiences in his life which every person tends to experience as they get older. Dickens had to abandon some of the optimism that he had held on to in youth, which is something that usually happens as one experience life more and the weight of the world is felt more on one's shoulders. In Dickens case, this weight was Victorian society and all its vices which he had high hopes to escape from when on "on January 4, 1842, Dickens and his wife boarded the steamer Britannia" to go to Boston in America (Lepore). Dickens, like most people at the time, probably had an ideal picture of America and most likely saw the country as a paradise against some of the old world's plagues and problems. When he arrived at America his fantasies were not met, and he would often write home saying things like "this is not the Republic [he] came to see" and how "this [was] not the Republic of [his] imagination"(Lepore). ... • 39. Charles Dickens Beliefs Charles Dickens is a well known name, most commonly associated with the classic Christmas novel, A Christmas Carol. However, there are numerous elements about him not as widely known. For instance, Dickens' view of Christianity were eccentric, and he was passionate about social reform in his time. Some of his lesser known writings and works attest to this. Regardless of his beliefs, he has had an enduring impact on the world. Charles Dickens was a different type of Christian. Contrary to most, he saw no importance in tradition and scripture. He disliked every form of organized Christianity, especially evangelicalism and Roman Catholicism. His writing consisted of only the most generic form of Christianity, never specifying denomination or other. This is because Charles Dickens himself only believed that there was God, as in a higher authority. He also viewed Jesus as a comforter of the distressed, not as the savior of mankind. Due to his beliefs, Charles Dickens took it upon himself to write The Life of Our Lord, his own simplified translation of the Gospels. His beliefs and actions were far from what is considered Christian today. Though Dickens' beliefs may not have been traditional in his time or the modern era of today, he proved to be morally strong and stood out as a passionate social reformer. Dickens' views on society were established at a young age. Beginning at age 12, Dickens was forced to work at a shoe–blacking factory due to his father's imprisonment in ... • 43. Charles Dickens Doubling Quotes The motif of doubling has been repeatedly shown throughout the book. Charles Dickens finds numerous ways to show the constant pattern of doubling from using children, to using exact metaphors. Life could either be one way or the other. Factors in life an either duplicate themselves or oppose themselves. He uses this repeated motif to emphasize the theme of life being a parallel universe. The prominent quote in Book 1, is the perfect example of how he does it" it was the best of times, it was the worst of times." This well known quote continues on by saying " it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we have nothing before us...." Everything Dickens describes opposes the other. Another way dickens shows doubling is by comparing their children to their parents. The first pair he compares is Jimmy Cruncher and his son. Jerry Cruncher, also known as the resurrection man is a grave robber in the book. His son Young Jerry follows him one night and sees what Jerry does. The next day he asks his father and informs that he wants to be like his father when he grows up. This shows doubling in more than one way. Initially, his name is Young Jerry. Secondly, he wants to follow in his father's footsteps. Another child to parent pair is Young Lucie Manette and her mother Lucie. Lucie Manette grew up without a father, he was in prison. When he was released she was all grown up, however she didn't let that affect their father–daughter relationship. As Lucie grows up and marries a man named Charles Darnay, they have a girl named Lucie, in other words, Young Lucie. Charles Darnay flees to France and ends up in prison, trying to resolve the issue the Manettes beg for mercy but none is granted. This shows the pattern of doubling because now Young Lucie will experience growing up without a father, just like her mother did. Dickens also shows the compare and contrast side of doubling by comparing Lucie Manette and Madame Defarge. Both characters have completely different life styles. Lucie lives is London and is ...
