Nanook Of The North Documentary
A documentary is an art form pulling away from a film as it tries to create the illusion of reality by
becoming non–fiction. Film creates a great sense of escape but documentaries create a sense of
realism. The history of documentary began quite basic by just facing the mirror towards nature. But
as the years prolonged; ideologies, societies and controversies arose and documentary–makers
decided to block certain parts of the mirror to show what they want you to see, "the truth". The very
first documentary was released in 1922, Nanook of the North directed by Robert Flaherty. This
became the first sense of revealing nature and reality as itself, whilst creating a form of narrative, as
people tend to lean towards drama. In the contemporary world, ... Show more content on

Poetic documentaries are also labelled as subjective and expressionist as it involves the focus on a
topic that is very personal to the director and the interviewees. Emotional expression is another key
element as it can emphasize a person's life through use of music, camera angles, camera shots and
the certain paces of editing. Michael Moore uses this as a strategic way to lure and catch he viewer's
emotions by showing them a sensitive topic and sensitive imagery, as the Columbine Massacre is a

Documentaries Research Essay
Documentaries are a form of media that have been around for decades and have been used to display
and educate a diverse range of subject matter from the lives of animals, political controversies, to
how eating McDonalds for every meal of the day can effect your health. Because of their long
history there have been many factors that have influenced the production of documentaries such as
societal and economical changes. One of what is debatably the largest factors that has influenced
documentaries is they have been a part of and shaped by the rise and full of many technological
advancements, such as cameras, audio equipment, editing stations and even the distribution of the
films themselves. As such it is important to see the impact that these advancements have had on the
making of documentaries both stylistically and technically. It is important to first know what a
documentary is to fully understand why the development of technology has shaped them. From their
conception documentary films have been about capturing life, about the "raw material of actuality."
(Beattie; 10) Not only do the documentaries tell us the story that the filmmaker is trying to tell, but
also a deeper lesson that may be historical and or of social significance. As documentaries would
now be considered mainstream media, they are seen as being the truth, that they are capturing life
from unbiased point of view. "Of course, saying that a documentary representation makes a truth
claim is not the same as

Documentaries. A piece of multimedia produced to enhance viewers knowledge about a particular
subject or event. They purport to portray reality; strive to showcase an unbiased viewpoint;
endeavour to tell a truthful story. However, this goal is rarely achieved. Directors create
documentaries in such a way they can never portray the entire truth. Filmmakers manipulate
numerous techniques such as interviews, footage, and editing to construct their version of the truth.
They depict reality in their perspective about the topic they wish to exploit.
A remarkably influential tool filmmakers utilise to portray a version of reality is their assortment of
interviewees. These careful selections can severely influence the documentaries depiction of true–

It is foolish to believe a documentary maker merely documents events as they unfold and
incorporates everything in the final product. If this were true, documentaries would be several hours
long, repeating the same point indefinitely and they would not be as captivating. Throughout her
film, Cowperthwaite purposely applies footage of Orca's in the wild; their natural habitat;
demonstrating how they should truly live. Cowperthwaite proceeds to incorporate additional footage
of Orca's in captivity, highlighting the drastic and monstrous change in lifestyle to the viewers.
Cowperthwaite also includes in her creation, footage of employees at shows and during training.
These videos show the trainers carefully working through stunts for shows with the utmost care for
safety, discounting SeaWorld's numerous claims of workers not taking correct precautions before
attempting a command. The inclusion of this footage positions the audience to develop a further
biased opinion of the unfortunate events that took place, based on the truth the director includes.
Therefore despite not being a feature movie, a documentary maker makes deliberate decisions
regarding what footage is used in their film, eliminating an element of

The Dropbox Documentary Analysis
Different news outlets, social media accounts, and TV stations are constantly filling our minds with
information every day. Whether we are aware of it, or not, every media source will use multiple
persuading elements to create different emotions or attitudes towards the information being
presented. Three documentaries are guilty of using persuasive techniques similar to various media
outlets. The Dropbox, a documentary directed by Brian Ivie, explains how a controversial invention,
which allows mother to anonymously drop off their unwanted babies, is impacting a small
community in South Korea. Blackfish is produced by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and it shows the
harsh treatment of Orcas who live in captivity and perform shows for entertainment. Finally, in Race
to Nowhere, Vicki Abeles displays how children are becoming overworked and overscheduled by
their schools. Each one of these documentaries use the rhetorical tool of pathos in order to make the
audience feel a sense of displeasure towards those in authority.

experiences from students, parents, and teachers to compel the audience to be frustrated with the
educational system. Every director produced a feeling of displeasure by their choices of media. The
selected testimonies and visuals generated an emotional tie between the audience and the
documentary, which produced these feelings of discontent. Whether it is media outlets, social media
accounts, TV shows, or even documentaries, directors are using rhetorical tools to shape the way

Kurt Cobain Documentary Essay
'Is It Possible To Accurately Represent Reality In Film?'
"...It matters very little what the facts are; what matters is what people believe. And when it comes
to Cobain, most of what they believe is fabricated nonsense."
–Buzz Osborne, Melvins
Documentaries are often assumed to be credible and filled with factual information; they do, after
all, document reality. This is not always the case though. There are many factors that determine the
reliability of documentaries: the editing, the director's agenda, the film's style, confirmation bias,
and choice of interviewees, among other things. Documentaries are a representative medium, after
all, and although they are able to give audiences insight into people and events that they were not
able to experience first–hand, there is much ambiguity surrounding the truthfulness of non–fiction
film. While it may be possible to inform and persuade people through film, it will never be able to
accurately represent reality. By comparing two documentaries about Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, it will
become apparent that there is still a blurred line between what is fiction and what is not.

Analysis Of The Documentary ' Armadillo ' Essay
The Dutch documentary Armadillo (2010) directed by Janus Metz Pedersen takes its audience into
the world of the platoon of Dutch soldiers as they complete a tour of duty in Afghanistan against the
Taliban. Majority of the dialogue in the film was spoken in Dutch, as well as Arabic spoken by the
Afghanistan citizens, the use of English subtitles translated for understanding. The documentary
begins with 4 men and then the introduction of other comrades, the documentary moves forward as
the actions and effects of war is put into focus. This is some of the few decisions made by the film
maker, as the message intended for the audience is made through the structure decided by the
director. The narrative structure of a documentary can be explained through several modes that can
be present within the documentary. Modes include Actuality, Expository, Observational, Rhetoric
and Participatory. The use of camera work, editing, and sound can help with the narration and better
understanding of the overall documentary. All of the modes, supported by the use of visual and oral
techniques, help the director express his perspective of the Dutch troop duty tour of the Afghanistan
and the intended message.
Actuality mode of the documentary emphasises the importance of realism and facts within the
footage. The purpose is to expose the audience to the real world, or some would say 'the harsh truth'
which in the case of Armadillo, is the war and violence present. A scene in that was edited to

A Documentary On Debris Flow
In geology, it would be known as a debris flow. Debris flows amass in stream valleys and more or
less resemble fresh concrete. They consist of water mixed with a good deal of solid material, most of
which is about sand size. Some of it is Chevrolet size. Boulders bigger than cars ride very long
distances in debris flows. Boulders grouped like fish eggs pour quickly downhill in debris flows.
The dark material coming toward the Genofiles was not only full of boulders it was like bread
dough mixed with raisins. On its way down pine cone road, it plucked up cars from driveways and
the street. When it crashed into the Genofiles' house, the shattering of safety glass made terrific

that is what caused all the shaking. They still had time to get away. As soon as they had gotten in the
car lots of questions began to arise. Would the house be ok? Would the debris flow even reach them?
Where was dad? What direction should they go? Johnny decided to wing it and follow the traffic
because he assumed everyone knew where they were going. As Johnny is driving he sees his
nemesis's car in the distance as well as the mammoth debris flow. Suddenly, a crack formed in the
road and popped their front tires. "What are we gonna do?!?" yelled jenny. "Something I thought I

knowing if they would survive. They hoped Johnny's nemesis would be kind enough to spare them.

What is the purpose of the documentary? The purpose of the documentary was about implementing

quality of life for humans, nature and our planet. This film was also created to change our
perspective of how we think about reintegrating nature in dense and fully developed communities so
that it not only fits into the functionality of our infrastructure but it also can restore our plants and

What did you expect to see? I expected to see the film focus more on rooftop gardens or community

gardens all over. I also did not expect to see how much thought went into planning their parks to
make sure that they somehow connect that way wildlife has the ability to move around without
obstruction.

throughout the whole film was about how do they control pest? I know that in San Diego County

Grizzly Man Documentary Analysis
Documentaries serve as an insight for the lives of individuals striving to change the way societies
think. These individuals bring to light issues that lack coverage and rarely cross the minds of the
populous. Many documentaries illustrate their story–telling in ways that differentiate themselves
from other types of cinematography. Documentaries utilize master and close up shots to create a
close connection between the subject of the documentary and its viewers. In Herzog's Grizzly Man,
Herzog pieces together the unorganized footage left by Timothy Treadwell a grizzly bear
conservationist, into a well–composed narrative that illuminates the dedication of Treadwell to the
conservation and protection of grizzly bears in the Alaskan wilderness. While Herzog does touch
upon the need for further protection of grizzly bears ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, Herzog includes a shot of Timothy accusing a group of individuals observing grizzly
bears as poachers. In reality these bears lack any threat from poachers because they live in territories
monitored and protected by park rangers. Experts on Grizzly bears criticize Timothy because
poaching is a miniscule threat to Grizzly bears. If poaching was a problem six percent of the
population theoretically could be hunted with no repercussions. Herzog including the interviews of
these experts discredits Treadwell's paranoia that park rangers and poachers are harming grizzlies.
Timothy's goal was the conservation and protection of grizzly bears, but according to experts in the
field Timothy was doing more harm than good. Timothy was habituating the bears making them
comfortable around humans, which anticipates his death by a Grizzly. The majority of these experts
are not surprised that Timothy ended up getting eaten. Timothy treated these animals as if they were

not real life, but only a representation of the real world. There are two different types of

on observed facts and is unbiased. Whilst subjective documentaries refer to a personal interpretation
of facts or events that is not impartial. This documentary on high school relationships is subjective
as we have our own opinion which is that nobody should judge other people on their opinions for

The Real Slumdog 's Documentary
a. Globalization/pg. 29: The growing interconnections among nations due to the expansion of
capitalism
The Real Slumdog's documentary was very interesting and eye opening. The amount of businesses
that are run in the one square mile area of Dharavi affect the entire capitalism of the world. Look at
it this way, the Slumdog's as they're called make crappy money to make some very intricate
products. These products will be shipped from Mumbai to the rest of the world eventually. As the
products are marked up by middle men, the money does not filter its way back to the Dharavi slum.
Thus, the products might be ten dollars in a store, but initially the slum workers get paid barely
anything and do not get to see the profit that they could. These people work to survive. Mumbai is a
very intricate and bustling city, and has a large amount of money and products moved through it
each day. In the inner city though, it is not as cheap to make the products. There also are not the
massive amounts of laborers that are found in Dharavi. Moving away from product production we
can look at the dumps of Dharavi. A large amount of the trash from the inner city is sent to the slum
to be processed. The workers that sort through the trash are called rag pickers. The rag pickers make
very little money for what they do, but the work that they do is very important. They separate the
waste into different categories to be processed and recycled accordingly. They separate the metals
from plastics, and

Bag It : Documentary Review
"Bag It" Documentary Review
Every time my family and I go grocery shopping we end up having numerous plastic bags after
unloading the food. For the most part we save these bags, keeping them underneath the sink in case
we need to use them for something else later on. However, we have done such a great job at saving
these bags that they have begun to take up space. As such we have recently started throwing most of
them in the garbage. After watching the Bag It documentary in my English class I begin to realize
how much plastic we actually end up throwing away just in these plastic bags, and how wasteful it
is.
It has become rather common today to dismiss this danger of plastic bags to our environment. In the
documentary Bag It, Jeb ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After Berrier saw the problem, he couldn't stop seeing it, plastic was everywhere! So, he took some
time to do research and show the world what the danger truly is with all this plastic. Yes, sure there
is plastic everywhere, so what? Why is this a problem? Berrier uses this documentary to explain just
that. To bring this big problem to the light, he covers three main topics: Single use disposable items
and the effect on our environment, ocean health, and human health.
The first question Jeb answers is why there is so much plastic around the world in our environment.
It starts with the mass production of single use disposable items. A "single use disposable item" is
simply an item that you can only use once and then it is disposed of. Berrier points out how so many
of our items we buy in today's society is, or is wrapped in this kind of single plastic. For example, as
the main issue of his documentary, plastic bags are single use disposable items, and are found in
almost every single store in America. In this part of the presentation he uses logos to get his point
across. Presenting facts such as this one: "the United States uses roughly– estimates are about 100
billion plastic bags per a year", which makes his argument more convincing. However, he does not
cite his sources very well, and never tells us where these facts are coming from, making his claims a
little less credible. While discussing this, he shows how even apples can

Visualization In Documentary Film
When we think about visualization and representation, we are talking about not looking at the real
thing but at an image of the real thing. So visualization can be 'visualized' as the real thing imagined,
the real thing represented and the real thing mediated. And the documentary genre attempts to do
exactly the same thing. So in this process of visualization, there comes the creative intervention of
the documentary film maker in all phases of production. In other words, 'aesthetics' plays a vital role
in documentary film. The fact that the film maker's aesthetic concepts bring in an element of
subjectivity into the documentary film poses an important question: "in what way, then, a
documentary film is different from a feature film? Where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Examples Of Ethical Documentary
The ethical documentary is a contradiction in terms. Discuss, referring in detail to one or more
films.
An ethical documentary is meant to show an honest representation of actuality. However, the
achievement of this ethical approach is problematic as the filmmaker faces difficulties of
representation, treatment, and perception of their subject on screen. A discussion of this problem of
the ethical documentary can be separated into the filmmaker's ethical role and the ethics of the
treatment of their subject.
Firstly, the role the filmmaker has to be considered in order to determine whether a documentary can
be ethical. The involvement of the filmmaker behind the documentary always creates the problem of
subjectivity. It is inevitable that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to that, it is the filmmaker who decides what is shown although not even he can "claim
to be able to see and hear everything, or even claim to be able to notice all that truly matters" (Coles,
p.89). These decisions are affected by the filmmaker's desire to tell a coherent and interesting story,
which can be difficult to find in an observation of life, which is rarely as structured as a dramatic
story. This means that the filmmaker constructs the reality of the film, thereby distancing it further
from the actuality he is ethically obliged to represent. This ability of manipulation goes as far as the
editing of the documentary, "[offering] equal opportunities for creativity" (Winston, 2006, p.25). In
his famous documentary Nanook of the North (1922, dir. Robert Flaherty), Flaherty was very

Mission Blue : A Documentary Analysis : Mission Blue
The main thesis of Mission Blue is to raise awareness of the importance of saving the ocean, and it
is based around acclaimed oceanographer Sylvia Earle. It is a great documentary because it uses 4
techniques to reinforce the theme of environmental awareness. The first method is through code,
where they use technical codes and symbolic codes. The second approach that makes this
documentary great is their creative use of conventions. In addition to this part of expressing a
message we have great use of methods of persuasion, which includes the trio of Logos, Pathos and
Ethos. Lastly to tie everything together, the documentary provides a great path to understand and
appreciate the methods of development.
Technical codes in a documentary would be the use of actual techniques such as sounds, lighting,
and camera angles to make the film more engaging. For this I used a cartoon picture of a camera as
it symbolizes film techniques. The codes that they use in the film are the use of dynamic camera
shots, use of simple lighting, use of simple sound. In interviews with Sylvia, whom this
documentary is based on, they will zoom out of the shot and show her entire body at times and only
her head at others. The lighting is simple and so is the sound. This film has the use of symbolic
codes, which is the inclusion of things like music, settings, props and language. In the film, they
would change the music depending on the topic they are talking about. When they were talking
about the beauty

music. Music showed that Billy was bad, by when the camera man was following Billy the music
that was played in the background was very dark and unhappy music. This music was chosen
purposely to portray that Billy is the bad guy. Another convention used was framing, the directors

cared about his appearance a lot. Once Steve had beat Billy, most of his family members were

when you know exactly what is going on makes you just as guilty.
What's wrong with people?! These women are human beings. They are human beings; human being
who are being exploited, raped, groped, touched, and even murdered all because they wanted to
come to America, this great country to make a better life for themselves and their families. They live
simple lives, work jobs no one else wants to do, and for what? To be violated while the owners, the
authorities and those in the higher ups have a blind eye? Why or how can they do that? With all the
cases that were brought to the attention of the EEOC, not one of the foremen, owners, or others were
actually brought to justice or really charged. Yes, they paid
"fines" as if money could change what had happened, but no crime charges were actually brought to
them. It was horrible to

Middle School Documentary Techniques
When we made our video we incorporated a few techniques one of them was only wanting them to
reply positively. This was because we only wanted to hear the good parts of middle school. When
we came up with the topic for our documentary, we had to decide if it was going to be subjective or
objective; we decided to choose objective. This is because we thought it would be easier to work
with. The documentary is mainly objective with a little bit of subjective in it. In the documentary,
we recorded it in a way so that we couldn't be seen. We said to everyone to wave and look at the
camera so that they seemed happier. We did this to change the opinion of the person who is
watching it so that they will think that this is how people act in middle middle school but in reality,
this is not what happens. The shots of the middle school also show parts of the building and some
other teachers which talk about what they do and who they are. When the teachers were discussing
middle school, they talked about the good things which influences the grade sixes. We did this to
relate to them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We also recorded the other main buildings when you're not in the middle school. We chose a lot of
teachers that were either the main teacher of a subject, or a Year 7 specialist teacher. We did this so
that the target audience would know where to go if they had something wrong. The reason why we
recorded Mrs Deer and Mr Collins, was so then the grade sixes knew what roles they did in our
school and if they needed to discuss anything they could go to them. We showed our video in this
way so that when it is being watched, it isn't too boring watching just teachers getting interviewed,
but also other places that the grade sixes are going to be taught and different teachers that they may

Swimming South Documentary Review
Swimming South – Documentary Review
Small, unnoticeable and lurking in the waters just off the coast of some of Queensland's most
popular beaches with the power to kill a person. Tracking further south than normal are the Irukandji
jellyfish, the focus of the 60 Minutes documentary Swimming South aired by Channel 9 on the
January 19th 2017. Through first hand sting victim stories and evidence of the jellyfish being found
further south, the documentary presents to the viewer the immense threat these lethal jellyfish
provide for beachgoers and tourism to east coast Queensland beaches.
Irukandji jellyfish are a clear, very small jellyfish with a maximum body size of only twenty five

By providing footage of victims during the time they are feeling the pain and other victims
recounting the pain they felt, it provokes a concern in the viewers for their safety in the water at
Queensland beaches as they do not want to be stung and suffer the severe pain other victim has. This
furthermore leads them to see the issue as a major problem due to their safety being at risk. For the
entirety of the documentary, Irukandji jellyfish are represented in a very negative manner. Material
excluded from the documentary includes whether there are any benefits of having the Irukandji in
the waters. These jellyfish may have a crucial role in keeping their aquatic ecosystem functioning,
however, any such positive purposes are excluded throughout the documentary as this would
weaken their intended negative representation of the animal. Any people who believe Irukandji have
any positive impact are silenced as this would also weaken the documentaries negative perspective

Performative Documentary
A performative role is that which emphasizes a hidden aspect of performance in a film either as a
subject or the filmmaker. According to Bruzzi (2000), "performative documentary is a speech act; it
both describes and performs an action. A documentary only comes into being as it is performed, and
only becomes meaningful as a negotiation between performance and reality. Their role is to make
the audience feel a better sense of reality in the film and how it is being dramatized. The more a
documentary draws attention to its self, the further it gets from what it represents (Nichols, 1994:

In the documentary, "Flint Town" we are exposed to a multitude of visuals that show us the depths
of poverty that the city of Flint has devolved to. Large amounts of abandoned property is shown,
given an in–depth perspective of the poverty. We see darks and lights in multiple portions of the
documentary, symbolizing the poverty and prosperity. In "Roger and Me" we see a contrasting
visual representation with light colors being used in the entire documentary. The sounds of poverty
are shown substantially, with emphasis on crime noises and loudness. The documentary holds back
no punches when it comes to showing us the brutality of desperation. A large amount of abandoned
property is shown in, "Flint Town" and this helps convey the general mood of this documentary
which, in my opinion, is the showcasing of what a city that has been left to its own defenses and not

The ways in which the codes and conventions are used the documentaries are that many of them

also starred in the movie 'Backdraft' in which he was a fire fighter. Just after the intro it shows the
plane hitting the World Trade Centre. The title is '9/11' this is written in white on a black

In 'September Mourning' the most of the footage is hand held and sometimes on tripod. The intro to
'September Mourning' is just a view of the New York skyline and it shows emptiness in the sky line.
Throughout the documentary many different angles of the skyline are shown, they are also shown at
different times of the day. On some of the views of the skyline Roger Graef has added extra tints to
the sky. On the first image shown the sky seems to be a very midnight blue colour, it doesn't seem to
be natural. 'September Mourning' could be classified as an observational documentary because
during the whole of the documentary there is no music at all except a 'city sound' of traffic. This
seems to be threatening. In 9/11 there is a piano piece being played. The title is shown in the same
way as in 9/11 but it is shown at the bottom of the screen. Also, in 'September Mourning' you don't

Documentary Conventions
Documentary is a genre that has the ability to provide visual evidence of reality by means of filmic
treatment of actuality. Intrinsically linked to the notion of 'truth', it relies on the mechanical
capability of the camera to capture an image of likeness. In a dynamic and flexible genre, the
possibilities are endless and as such, are constantly being redefined. Advances in technological
factors have driven the genre's complexity, expanding boundaries and allowing filmmakers the
opportunity to create more precise and accurate visual representations of reality.
The motion camera was first conceived allowing the establishment of film production companies;
technological limits meant films were silent and generally less than a minute in length. ... Show

It empowered films to have a newfound freedom from the problems associated with the use of a
post–synchronized soundtrack. In 1961, a portable sound recording device called the Nagra III,
became available (Kudelski, 1). First used in an investigative film called Chronique d'un éte (Morin
& Rouch, 1961) where the filmmaker posed a simple question to their subjects, 'Are you happy?'
The ability to record both the audio and visual responses in synchrony, rather than having to
manipulate sound in the postproduction process, gave rise to new documentary styles. The device
meant documentary filmmakers could more accurately capture and portray reality and consequently,
audiences were able to experience real events, people and spaces in real time. This technological
factor shaped the documentary genre into a now reliable source of information; displaying the

The Cove Documentary Analysis
A documentary is defined as 'a nonfiction motion picture intended to document some aspect of
reality, for the purpose of education or maintaining a historical record'. Documentaries throughout
history have covered a wide range of topics, including animal rights and the issues surrounding it.
The documentary The Cove (2009), directed by Louis Psihoyos, examines and questions dolphin
hunting practices in Taiji, Japan. The film scrutinises Japanese fishing practices and the Japanese
government's involvement in the International Whaling Commission, from an ocean
conservationist's point of view. Blackfish (2013), directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, focuses on
the consequences of keeping orcas in captivity. The film highlights the story of Tilikum, a SeaWorld

Both of the films use similar styles of music to evoke similar emotions in the audience. For
example, when the animals in both The Cove and Blackfish are shown free in the wild, wondrous
music is played. Both films used a mixture of piano, harps and violin to create a feeling of elation in
the audience. The use of music in this way helps the audience to associate that feeling with seeing
animals free in their natural habitats, therefore increasing their empathy towards the animals.
Another example of the powerful effects of sound is in a scene in The Cove when a large group of
dolphins are being slaughtered. In this scene, there is no sound at all. This silence creates a serious,
sombre mood and allows the audience to feel the severity of the slaughters. Cowperthwaite used a
different style of music to create this same mood in Blackfish. Accompanying a scene showing a
mother orca separated from her daughter in SeaWorld, a single violin plays a sad, haunting song.
These examples show how filmmakers can use music to manipulate the emotions of an audience and
therefore change their

Analysis Of Documentary Storytelling By Sheila Curran Bernard
The novel Documentary Storytelling by Sheila Curran Bernard delves deep into the behind the
scenes of the development of documentary. She writes powerfully and informatively on the structure
of documentary and how time on screen can be used. In the chapter entitled Planning and Pitching,
Bernard discusses the importance of selecting a cast of experts with a wide range of viewpoints
(Bernard 148). I agree with Bernard that having a diverse range of opinions may add credibility to
the film, but I must argue that having too large an amount will undermine the direction of the film.
While having a wide range of viewpoints may balance the film, those viewpoints may contradict
each other and make the concept of the film difficult to understand. Bernard's

The Cove Documentary
The uses of documentaries have evolved throughout the decades. With new technologies and
techniques, documentaries often can have a powerful impact on the audiences. A documentary can
manipulate the audiences to evoke a specific emotion to support its cause. Such emotions can be
evoked to a particular degree. Documentaries also have the potential to change one's perspective or
even make a difference in an individual. Imagine your family and friends, safe and sound, and most
importantly, happy. Then suddenly, people with nets come and kidnap your brother and sister and

gypsy's illnesses, many people often helped the Blanchard's either financially or through
organizations. Many would describe the pair as loving, kind, and inseparable. People would never

many people were shocked to find that this family was not what they thought. The countless
diseases that Gypsy was thought to have were fictional. Depending on what type of doctor Gypsy
would see, Dee Dee would lie about Gypsy's condition and family history. Dee Dee manipulated
everyone, even doctors, into believing that Gypsy was sick. This resulted in a multitude of
redundant surgeries and medications that gypsy had to endure. And because of many medications
Gypsy had, many of the doctors thought that the symptoms they were seeing were what they were

different topics: Historical (Pirates – The Golden Age), Mystery (Vanished – The plane that

The Vanished documentary has a split narrative structure skipping from scenes of the airplane to
when the soldiers are sent up on the investigation – this is the only documentary, which is structured
this way and works very well it bounces back and forth in time. This technique is used because it
builds a suspense for the viewer and just a crucial moment is near it will switch so the viewer will
continue watching until it switches back again to the main screen, it gratifies the audience when it is
shown again. The Blue Planet has a very linear structure like the Burkitsville Seven (the beginning
of the documentary is shallow and it ends up at the bottom of the ocean) but at the end they have a
sub section demonstrating how the produced the documentary and proving its reality, this is a form
of self–reflexive filming. They do not need to build suspense because it is not that genre of
documentary. The Pirate documentary as well as the Burkitsville Seven and the Blue Planet happens
periodically but this differs as there is a much larger timescale – instead of one main focus the are
many sub plots about the different pirates of the time, this gratifies the audience as it uses a wide
range of stories and each one is different and has a wide range of events so the viewer watches for
the range of events. This is a little

in real events to provide a factual report on a particular subject. However, documentaries are much
more than that, they educate the general public and make them aware of what is going on in the
world and within our society, some are for entertainment purposes or can just be observational.
Good morning / afternoon fellow documentary filmmakers, my name is Charlotte Thompson and the

What Is A Documentary?

four chapters by capturing the multitude of processes involved in shaping my work as a freelance

My findings draw from a broad range of research material, to counter a lack of studies in the field,
and to encompass a wide range of contrasting academic and practitioner perspectives. As indicated,
this first chapter interrogates the production of my initial David Bowie documentary, Down Under
the Moonlight, the audio of which is provided for consideration as part of this submission
(appendices A, 1). This two–hour production was broadcast on the 26th of November, 2008 on
Radio Hauraki, New Zealand, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of David Bowie's album Let's
Dance and his accompanying Serious Moonlight world tour. The documentary was produced
alongside a sister–project, titled Bowie's Waiata (Coley, 2008), created for the public service
broadcaster Radio New Zealand. I interrogate both documentaries within this chapter, as the two
projects are conjoined by utilising the same collection of contributors, archival audio and music. By
comparing approaches to the same Bowie story, I identify differences and similarities which exist
between public service and commercial documentary production. I begin by outlining the origins of
the project, then consider the commissioning of both the Bowie's Waiata and Down Under the
Moonlight documentaries. I then explore production processes and assess how online technologies
have assisted in the construction and distribution of the project. I suggest that the advent of the

During this unit in Term 2, the english class has been exploring the history and development of the
documentary; exploring how people, events, cultures and ideas are represented in documentaries.
Ellen, Nawshaba, Mercedes and Mia were included in my group on the topics of Nap Rooms.
Throughout this process I have developed teamwork and leadership skills to produce a subjective

A multitude of persuasive techniques were implicated within the documentary to sway the audience.
Such devices are as follows: repetition, music, anecdotal evidence, inclusive language, rhetorical
questions, statistical evidence, jargon appeal to emotion, appeal to trust and appeal to authority.
These persuasive utensils aided in influencing the audience to agree with the documentary.
The documentary created was more subjective than objective as the group used various persuasive

Documentary And Narrative Filmmaking
What makes documentary filmmaking distinct to narrative filmmaking? There are a few contrasting
objectives for both types of filmmaking that distinguishes them from each other. Simply put,
narrative filmmaking is a movie with a pre–written script, actors and a story which is already crafted
before they start shooting. while documentaries are filmmaking where real life events are captured,
and a script is usually written afterwards. Narrative films rely on the three–act structure which goes
Setup, Confrontation and Resolution or in other words, a beginning, middle and end. The main aim
for the three–act structure is for the story to develop while the stakes get risker for our characters, so
they evolve as the movie goes on. Narrative film ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Focusing on the 9/11 terrorist attack and how the Bush administration handled it. Many believed
Moore had an agenda against President George W. Bush while making the film and edited the movie
to show the audience what he wanted them to see. The opening lines from Moore in the film are,
"We worked hard on creating a work of cinema that would move people not just politically but on an
emotional and visceral level. I hope we have made a contribution to this art form we love so much."
Unfortunately for Moore, debate sparked over Moore's true intentions while making this film. Many
believed it was to attack Bush who was running for re–election in 2004 as the movie was due for
release around the same time Bush began campaigning. "The crux of the debate surrounding the
film involved Moore's satirical styling. Some argued Moore tried too hard to make his movie
entertaining and, in the process, would often distort pieces of information." (Bryd, 2017) This is yet
another possible example of filmmakers showing the audience what they want to see and not the
complete truth. While it is not proven that Moore did bend the truth, therefore it is nearly impossible
to create a comprehensive code of ethics when making a documentary because Filmmakers can and
sometimes will break the rules to show what they want to, be it to expose the truth or a personal

Nanook Of The North Documentary

  • 1. Nanook Of The North Documentary A documentary is an art form pulling away from a film as it tries to create the illusion of reality by becoming non–fiction. Film creates a great sense of escape but documentaries create a sense of realism. The history of documentary began quite basic by just facing the mirror towards nature. But as the years prolonged; ideologies, societies and controversies arose and documentary–makers decided to block certain parts of the mirror to show what they want you to see, "the truth". The very first documentary was released in 1922, Nanook of the North directed by Robert Flaherty. This became the first sense of revealing nature and reality as itself, whilst creating a form of narrative, as people tend to lean towards drama. In the contemporary world, ... Poetic documentaries are also labelled as subjective and expressionist as it involves the focus on a topic that is very personal to the director and the interviewees. Emotional expression is another key element as it can emphasize a person's life through use of music, camera angles, camera shots and the certain paces of editing. Michael Moore uses this as a strategic way to lure and catch he viewer's emotions by showing them a sensitive topic and sensitive imagery, as the Columbine Massacre is a tragic event (Willcox, E. ... • 3. Documentaries Research Essay Documentaries are a form of media that have been around for decades and have been used to display and educate a diverse range of subject matter from the lives of animals, political controversies, to how eating McDonalds for every meal of the day can effect your health. Because of their long history there have been many factors that have influenced the production of documentaries such as societal and economical changes. One of what is debatably the largest factors that has influenced documentaries is they have been a part of and shaped by the rise and full of many technological advancements, such as cameras, audio equipment, editing stations and even the distribution of the films themselves. As such it is important to see the impact that these advancements have had on the making of documentaries both stylistically and technically. It is important to first know what a documentary is to fully understand why the development of technology has shaped them. From their conception documentary films have been about capturing life, about the "raw material of actuality." (Beattie; 10) Not only do the documentaries tell us the story that the filmmaker is trying to tell, but also a deeper lesson that may be historical and or of social significance. As documentaries would now be considered mainstream media, they are seen as being the truth, that they are capturing life from unbiased point of view. • 5. Raw Documentary Analysis Documentaries. A piece of multimedia produced to enhance viewers knowledge about a particular subject or event. They purport to portray reality; strive to showcase an unbiased viewpoint; endeavour to tell a truthful story. However, this goal is rarely achieved. Directors create documentaries in such a way they can never portray the entire truth. Filmmakers manipulate numerous techniques such as interviews, footage, and editing to construct their version of the truth. They depict reality in their perspective about the topic they wish to exploit. A remarkably influential tool filmmakers utilise to portray a version of reality is their assortment of interviewees. These careful selections can severely influence the documentaries depiction of true– to–life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is foolish to believe a documentary maker merely documents events as they unfold and incorporates everything in the final product. If this were true, documentaries would be several hours long, repeating the same point indefinitely and they would not be as captivating. Throughout her film, Cowperthwaite purposely applies footage of Orca's in the wild; their natural habitat; demonstrating how they should truly live. Cowperthwaite proceeds to incorporate additional footage of Orca's in captivity, highlighting the drastic and monstrous change in lifestyle to the viewers. Cowperthwaite also includes in her creation, footage of employees at shows and during training. These videos show the trainers carefully working through stunts for shows with the utmost care for safety, discounting SeaWorld's numerous claims of workers not taking correct precautions before attempting a command. The inclusion of this footage positions the audience to develop a further biased opinion of the unfortunate events that took place, based on the truth the director includes. Therefore despite not being a feature movie, a documentary maker makes deliberate decisions regarding what footage is used in their film, eliminating an element of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There was this one lady that they interviewed, she said she was a minor drug dealer that knew the basic, that she had to do to survive. What confused me a little bit about her situation was it showed her at a job where it seems like she was a housekeeper at a gym. So she has a job and an apartment so why is she out there risking her life to be a minor drug dealer, where it most likely going to end with her rob and shot/killed or she be in jail. Then on the legal side, they showed you inside Lexington Corrections Facility. Where they interviewed a lot of the imamates, that were either there for dealing or using. Whether we are aware of it, or not, every media source will use multiple persuading elements to create different emotions or attitudes towards the information being presented. Three documentaries are guilty of using persuasive techniques similar to various media outlets. The Dropbox, a documentary directed by Brian Ivie, explains how a controversial invention, which allows mother to anonymously drop off their unwanted babies, is impacting a small community in South Korea. Blackfish is produced by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and it shows the harsh treatment of Orcas who live in captivity and perform shows for entertainment. • 14. Kurt Cobain Documentary Essay 'Is It Possible To Accurately Represent Reality In Film?' "...It matters very little what the facts are; what matters is what people believe. And when it comes to Cobain, most of what they believe is fabricated nonsense." –Buzz Osborne, Melvins Documentaries are often assumed to be credible and filled with factual information; they do, after all, document reality. This is not always the case though. There are many factors that determine the reliability of documentaries: the editing, the director's agenda, the film's style, confirmation bias, and choice of interviewees, among other things. Documentaries are a representative medium, after all, and although they are able to give audiences insight into people and events that they were not able to experience first–hand, there is much ambiguity surrounding the truthfulness of non–fiction film. While it may be possible to inform and persuade people through film, it will never be able to accurately represent reality. By comparing two documentaries about Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, it will become apparent that there is still a blurred line between what is fiction and what is not. Kurt Donald Cobain. • 16. Analysis Of The Documentary ' Armadillo ' Essay The Dutch documentary Armadillo (2010) directed by Janus Metz Pedersen takes its audience into the world of the platoon of Dutch soldiers as they complete a tour of duty in Afghanistan against the Taliban. Majority of the dialogue in the film was spoken in Dutch, as well as Arabic spoken by the Afghanistan citizens, the use of English subtitles translated for understanding. The documentary begins with 4 men and then the introduction of other comrades, the documentary moves forward as the actions and effects of war is put into focus. This is some of the few decisions made by the film maker, as the message intended for the audience is made through the structure decided by the director. The narrative structure of a documentary can be explained through several modes that can be present within the documentary. Modes include Actuality, Expository, Observational, Rhetoric and Participatory. The use of camera work, editing, and sound can help with the narration and better understanding of the overall documentary. All of the modes, supported by the use of visual and oral techniques, help the director express his perspective of the Dutch troop duty tour of the Afghanistan and the intended message. Actuality mode of the documentary emphasises the importance of realism and facts within the footage. The purpose is to expose the audience to the real world, or some would say 'the harsh truth' which in the case of Armadillo, is the war and violence present. A scene in that was edited to ... As soon as they had gotten in the car lots of questions began to arise. Would the house be ok? Would the debris flow even reach them? Where was dad? What direction should they go? Johnny decided to wing it and follow the traffic because he assumed everyone knew where they were going. As Johnny is driving he sees his nemesis's car in the distance as well as the mammoth debris flow. Suddenly, a crack formed in the road and popped their front tires. "What are we gonna do?!?" yelled jenny. "Something I thought I would never have to do, ask my nemesis for help," Johnny said angrily. They got out of the car not knowing if they would survive. A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record. Many documentaries illustrate their story–telling in ways that differentiate themselves from other types of cinematography. Documentaries utilize master and close up shots to create a close connection between the subject of the documentary and its viewers. In Herzog's Grizzly Man, Herzog pieces together the unorganized footage left by Timothy Treadwell a grizzly bear conservationist, into a well–composed narrative that illuminates the dedication of Treadwell to the conservation and protection of grizzly bears in the Alaskan wilderness. If poaching was a problem six percent of the population theoretically could be hunted with no repercussions. Herzog including the interviews of these experts discredits Treadwell's paranoia that park rangers and poachers are harming grizzlies. Globalization/pg. 29: The growing interconnections among nations due to the expansion of capitalism The Real Slumdog's documentary was very interesting and eye opening. The amount of businesses that are run in the one square mile area of Dharavi affect the entire capitalism of the world. Look at it this way, the Slumdog's as they're called make crappy money to make some very intricate products. These products will be shipped from Mumbai to the rest of the world eventually. As the products are marked up by middle men, the money does not filter its way back to the Dharavi slum. Thus, the products might be ten dollars in a store, but initially the slum workers get paid barely anything and do not get to see the profit that they could. These people work to survive. Mumbai is a very intricate and bustling city, and has a large amount of money and products moved through it each day. In the inner city though, it is not as cheap to make the products. There also are not the massive amounts of laborers that are found in Dharavi. Moving away from product production we can look at the dumps of Dharavi. A large amount of the trash from the inner city is sent to the slum to be processed. The workers that sort through the trash are called rag pickers. The rag pickers make very little money for what they do, but the work that they do is very important. They separate the waste into different categories to be processed and recycled accordingly. For the most part we save these bags, keeping them underneath the sink in case we need to use them for something else later on. However, we have done such a great job at saving these bags that they have begun to take up space. As such we have recently started throwing most of them in the garbage. After watching the Bag It documentary in my English class I begin to realize how much plastic we actually end up throwing away just in these plastic bags, and how wasteful it is. It has become rather common today to dismiss this danger of plastic bags to our environment. In the documentary Bag It, Jeb ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After Berrier saw the problem, he couldn't stop seeing it, plastic was everywhere! So, he took some time to do research and show the world what the danger truly is with all this plastic. Yes, sure there is plastic everywhere, so what? Why is this a problem? Berrier uses this documentary to explain just that. To bring this big problem to the light, he covers three main topics: Single use disposable items and the effect on our environment, ocean health, and human health. The first question Jeb answers is why there is so much plastic around the world in our environment. It starts with the mass production of single use disposable items. A "single use disposable item" is simply an item that you can only use once and then it is disposed of. Berrier points out how so many of our items we buy in today's society is, or is wrapped in this kind of single plastic. For example, as the main issue of his documentary, plastic bags are single use disposable items, and are found in almost every single store in America. In this part of the presentation he uses logos to get his point across. Presenting facts such as this one: "the United States uses roughly– estimates are about 100 billion plastic bags per a year", which makes his argument more convincing. So visualization can be 'visualized' as the real thing imagined, the real thing represented and the real thing mediated. And the documentary genre attempts to do exactly the same thing. So in this process of visualization, there comes the creative intervention of the documentary film maker in all phases of production. In other words, 'aesthetics' plays a vital role in documentary film. • 34. Examples Of Ethical Documentary The ethical documentary is a contradiction in terms. Discuss, referring in detail to one or more films. An ethical documentary is meant to show an honest representation of actuality. However, the achievement of this ethical approach is problematic as the filmmaker faces difficulties of representation, treatment, and perception of their subject on screen. A discussion of this problem of the ethical documentary can be separated into the filmmaker's ethical role and the ethics of the treatment of their subject. Firstly, the role the filmmaker has to be considered in order to determine whether a documentary can be ethical. The involvement of the filmmaker behind the documentary always creates the problem of subjectivity. It is inevitable that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition to that, it is the filmmaker who decides what is shown although not even he can "claim to be able to see and hear everything, or even claim to be able to notice all that truly matters" (Coles, p.89). This means that the filmmaker constructs the reality of the film, thereby distancing it further from the actuality he is ethically obliged to represent. This ability of manipulation goes as far as the editing of the documentary, "[offering] equal opportunities for creativity" (Winston, 2006, p.25). Mission Blue : A Documentary Analysis : Mission Blue The main thesis of Mission Blue is to raise awareness of the importance of saving the ocean, and it is based around acclaimed oceanographer Sylvia Earle. It is a great documentary because it uses 4 techniques to reinforce the theme of environmental awareness. The first method is through code, where they use technical codes and symbolic codes. The second approach that makes this documentary great is their creative use of conventions. In addition to this part of expressing a message we have great use of methods of persuasion, which includes the trio of Logos, Pathos and Ethos. Lastly to tie everything together, the documentary provides a great path to understand and appreciate the methods of development. Technical codes in a documentary would be the use of actual techniques such as sounds, lighting, and camera angles to make the film more engaging. For this I used a cartoon picture of a camera as it symbolizes film techniques. The codes that they use in the film are the use of dynamic camera shots, use of simple lighting, use of simple sound. In interviews with Sylvia, whom this documentary is based on, they will zoom out of the shot and show her entire body at times and only her head at others. The lighting is simple and so is the sound. For example, one of the conventions used to show this was music. Music showed that Billy was bad, by when the camera man was following Billy the music that was played in the background was very dark and unhappy music. This music was chosen purposely to portray that Billy is the bad guy. • 58. Analysis Of Documentary Storytelling By Sheila Curran Bernard The novel Documentary Storytelling by Sheila Curran Bernard delves deep into the behind the scenes of the development of documentary. She writes powerfully and informatively on the structure of documentary and how time on screen can be used. In the chapter entitled Planning and Pitching, Bernard discusses the importance of selecting a cast of experts with a wide range of viewpoints (Bernard 148). I agree with Bernard that having a diverse range of opinions may add credibility to the film, but I must argue that having too large an amount will undermine the direction of the film. While having a wide range of viewpoints may balance the film, those viewpoints may contradict each other and make the concept of the film difficult to understand. Bernard's ... • 62. Wisegeek Documentary What is a Documentary? When I first heard that we would be learning in comp 2 by using documentaries, I panicked because I rarely watch television, much less do I ever watch documentaries. As I began to research what a documentary truly is, I realized this class will not be terrible considering I am actually looking forward to watching and analyzing documentaries in the coming weeks for my class. There are many different definitions of the word documentary. One definition I found is, according to wisegeek.org, "a documentary film is a movie that attempts to document reality...the scenes are carefully chosen...may rely on voice–over narration to describe what is happening" which sums it up pretty well and is very clear in my mind. • 64. The Cove Documentary The uses of documentaries have evolved throughout the decades. With new technologies and techniques, documentaries often can have a powerful impact on the audiences. A documentary can manipulate the audiences to evoke a specific emotion to support its cause. Such emotions can be evoked to a particular degree. Documentaries also have the potential to change one's perspective or even make a difference in an individual. Imagine your family and friends, safe and sound, and most importantly, happy. Then suddenly, people with nets come and kidnap your brother and sister and the rest are killed. It's hard to imagine right? But this is the life of dolphins in Taijin. Dee Dee Blanchard, mother of gypsy, was killed on June ninth two thousand fifteen. Gypsy and her mother were hurricane Katrina survivors and because of gypsy's illnesses, many people often helped the Blanchard's either financially or through organizations. Many would describe the pair as loving, kind, and inseparable. People would never see one without the other and thought they were dependent on each other. Once the case opened, many people were shocked to find that this family was not what they thought. The countless diseases that Gypsy was thought to have were fictional. Depending on what type of doctor Gypsy would see, Dee Dee would lie about Gypsy's condition and family history. Dee Dee manipulated everyone, even doctors, into believing that Gypsy was sick. This resulted in a multitude of redundant surgeries and medications that gypsy had to endure. And because of many medications Gypsy had, many of the doctors thought that the symptoms they were seeing were what they were trying to treat. Though Dee Dee was a good manipulator, Dr. Benardo Flasterstein and Dr. Marc Feldman had their doubts. Dr. Marc Feldman, a clinical psychologist, believed Gypsy was a victim of Munchausen by proxy syndrome. Stating that most of the things that Dee Dee was saying wasn't matching with Gypsy. • 68. Essay on Comparing Television Documentaries and Their... Comparing Television Documentaries and Their Gratifications In this Essay I am going to watch four different documentaries, all with different topics. I will analyse them and then work out how they offer gratifications to the audiences. I will write about what affect they have and why they are used. I watched four different documentaries with four different topics: Historical (Pirates – The Golden Age), Mystery (Vanished – The plane that disappeared), Nature (Blue Planet) and horror / mystery (The Burkitsville Seven). All are very successful and have many different ways in which they individually gratify the audience and explain the set topic. First I will explain about how the documentaries are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Vanished documentary has a split narrative structure skipping from scenes of the airplane to when the soldiers are sent up on the investigation – this is the only documentary, which is structured this way and works very well it bounces back and forth in time. This technique is used because it builds a suspense for the viewer and just a crucial moment is near it will switch so the viewer will continue watching until it switches back again to the main screen, it gratifies the audience when it is shown again. The Blue Planet has a very linear structure like the Burkitsville Seven (the beginning of the documentary is shallow and it ends up at the bottom of the ocean) but at the end they have a sub section demonstrating how the produced the documentary and proving its reality, this is a form of self–reflexive filming. They do not need to build suspense because it is not that genre of documentary. The Pirate documentary as well as the Burkitsville Seven and the Blue Planet happens periodically but this differs as there is a much larger timescale – instead of one main focus the are many sub plots about the different pirates of the time, this gratifies the audience as it uses a wide range of stories and each one is different and has a wide range of events so the viewer watches for the range of events. • 70. Food Inc Documentary (SLIDE 1) According to the Oxford dictionary, documentaries use pictures or interviews with people involved in real events to provide a factual report on a particular subject. However, documentaries are much more than that, they educate the general public and make them aware of what is going on in the world and within our society, some are for entertainment purposes or can just be observational. Good morning / afternoon fellow documentary filmmakers, my name is Charlotte Thompson and the documentary I am presenting to you is 'Food, Inc'. 'Food, Inc.' is about how the production of food has drastically changed since the 1950s, how it is controlled primarily by a handful of multinational corporations and it has changed my perspective on food consumption as it has shown the negative consequences of cheap fast food. These techniques include: camera shots, camera angles, camera movements and transitions. These techniques used effectively create a greater emotional pull. (SLIDE 3) Some camera shots used are extreme long shots, long shots, medium shots and close ups, camera movements such as panning and tilting and many more. • 72. What Is A Documentary? The following three chapters present the findings of this practice–based investigation, by interrogating the production of fourteen music documentaries I created for commercial radio between 2008 and 2013. These findings provide a narrative of discovery, which build on the first four chapters by capturing the multitude of processes involved in shaping my work as a freelance radio documentary producer. By isolating and identifying key responsibilities and technical considerations, I provide insight into contemporary freelance documentary production for commercial radio, enabling me to explore the central questions that underpin this study. I have structured my findings into three chapters, following a chronological timeline, which capture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My findings draw from a broad range of research material, to counter a lack of studies in the field, and to encompass a wide range of contrasting academic and practitioner perspectives. As indicated, this first chapter interrogates the production of my initial David Bowie documentary, Down Under the Moonlight, the audio of which is provided for consideration as part of this submission (appendices A, 1). This two–hour production was broadcast on the 26th of November, 2008 on Radio Hauraki, New Zealand, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of David Bowie's album Let's Dance and his accompanying Serious Moonlight world tour. The documentary was produced alongside a sister–project, titled Bowie's Waiata (Coley, 2008), created for the public service broadcaster Radio New Zealand. I interrogate both documentaries within this chapter, as the two projects are conjoined by utilising the same collection of contributors, archival audio and music. By comparing approaches to the same Bowie story, I identify differences and similarities which exist between public service and commercial documentary production. I begin by outlining the origins of the project, then consider the commissioning of both the Bowie's Waiata and Down Under the Moonlight documentaries. I then explore production processes and assess how online technologies have assisted in the construction and distribution of the project. I suggest that the advent of the Internet has ... • 74. Nap Rooms: Documentary Analysis Documentary Reflection Bonny Treloar During this unit in Term 2, the english class has been exploring the history and development of the documentary; exploring how people, events, cultures and ideas are represented in documentaries. Ellen, Nawshaba, Mercedes and Mia were included in my group on the topics of Nap Rooms. Throughout this process I have developed teamwork and leadership skills to produce a subjective documentary. A multitude of persuasive techniques were implicated within the documentary to sway the audience. Such devices are as follows: repetition, music, anecdotal evidence, inclusive language, rhetorical questions, statistical evidence, jargon appeal to emotion, appeal to trust and appeal to authority. These persuasive utensils aided in influencing the audience to agree with the documentary. The documentary created was more subjective than objective as the group used various persuasive techniques as mentioned before rather than absolute facts and data. However, the presentation had elements of an objective documentary. For example, the statistical evidence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 76. Documentary And Narrative Filmmaking What makes documentary filmmaking distinct to narrative filmmaking? There are a few contrasting objectives for both types of filmmaking that distinguishes them from each other. Simply put, narrative filmmaking is a movie with a pre–written script, actors and a story which is already crafted before they start shooting. while documentaries are filmmaking where real life events are captured, and a script is usually written afterwards. Narrative films rely on the three–act structure which goes Setup, Confrontation and Resolution or in other words, a beginning, middle and end. The main aim for the three–act structure is for the story to develop while the stakes get risker for our characters, so they evolve as the movie goes on. Narrative film ... Bush while making the film and edited the movie to show the audience what he wanted them to see. The opening lines from Moore in the film are, "We worked hard on creating a work of cinema that would move people not just politically but on an emotional and visceral level. I hope we have made a contribution to this art form we love so much." Unfortunately for Moore, debate sparked over Moore's true intentions while making this film. Many believed it was to attack Bush who was running for re–election in 2004 as the movie was due for release around the same time Bush began campaigning. "The crux of the debate surrounding the film involved Moore's satirical styling. Some argued Moore tried too hard to make his movie entertaining and, in the process, would often distort pieces of information." (Bryd, 2017) This is yet another possible example of filmmakers showing the audience what they want to see and not the complete truth. While it is not proven that Moore did bend the truth, therefore it is nearly impossible to create a comprehensive code of ethics when making a documentary because Filmmakers can and sometimes will break the rules to show what they want to, be it to expose the truth or a personal ...
