The Walking Dead Westerns Summary
I would consider the 'Walking Dead' a western but more of a modernized Sci–Fi type of western. In
the article by Massik, Solomon "The Walking Dead, Westerns, and the New Westerns" it describes
how the 'Walking Dead' is a western because of the guns, violence and the lawless frontier. I agree
with this because that's how I imagine most westerns be with people with guns and they were
allowed to use them more freely than what they are now. Western males always had guns at hand
just like in the 'Walking Dead' but since it's a modernized show females also carry guns. Massik also
mentioned how westerns took over land through massive killings, this is exactly what happens in the
'Walking Dead' the people in the show kill off many "walkers" from various

Essay on An Evaluation of Grease
An Evaluation of Grease
My film that I choose was Grease because it contains music, dancing and humor. It is a cross
between comedy and teen movies. It is a tribute to the Broadway show of the 1950's. It was directed
by Randal Klieser and was released on July 7th 1978. The music and dance scenes are what
attracted me to Grease. My favorite characters are John Travolta and Jeff Conaway who play Danny
and Kenickie. I like these two because they are your typical high school popular boys who are
always looking out for each other, looking good and they are always trying to get the beautiful girls
but at the same time acting cool like it doesn't bother them. I had high expectations of Grease and I

Secondly genre is the French word meaning type. Genres may be approached by way of various
critical avenues. In the Aristotelian strain we recognize genres as kinds within a system of
classification. These categories beg further definition, so there is a history of, on the one hand, the
refinement of divisions and subdivisions, and on the other a Platonic search for the 'essential'
qualities of tragedy, comedy, epic poetry, and so forth. By the recognition of genres we begin to find
our way in the universe of verbal artifacts with their feigned discourses, and to train our
expectations upon the experience that lies in wait for us. Grease's genre is a hybrid genre because it
is a cross between a comedy, a teen movie and romantic.
Lastly representation is the act of representing or the state of being represented. Also it is something
that represents an image, an account or statement, an expostulation or a presentation or production.
For example the representation of the characters in Grease varies. Sandy is portrayed as a pure and
innocent girl but on the other hand Rizzo is portrayed as a bad girl who is always getting into
trouble and won't take anything from no one. Also Rizzo is sometimes mean to Sandy

Television Genre And Style Of Mockumentaries Essay
Within the realm of television today, many of the more popular comedies have a very specific style
of production and way of capturing scenes. This style is often referred to as the "Mockumentary"
style and can be seen within examples like The Office and Park and Recreation. The popularity of
these shows alone have inspired many other different spin–offs and takes on this specific style of
comedy, but these shows shouldn't be credited as the "founders" of the mockumentary style. In fact,
for television shows the mockumentary's history goes farther back by a couple of decades. This
paper will attempt to discover the answers to three main questions regarding the television genre and
style of mockumentaries. Firstly, the definition of a mockumentary and a general understanding of
the stylistic similarities must be examined before the history of the mockumentary is to be explored.
Next, the historical background will be considered as well as the cultural significance and impact of
the shows that emulated this mockumentary style. Lastly, the paper will look to the current cultural
contexts and the social impacts of the popular, modern day televisions shows that incorporate these
styles. Through the analysis of the mockumentary style in the combination of the historical lens and
the definitional lens, modern day shows that utilize this subgenre will be better understood as well
as their impacts on society itself.
According to Oxford Dictionary, a mockumentary can simply be

Movie Analysis : ' The Wild Bunch '
The differences which indicate a film 's story and a film 's plot are the "what and the how".
The Story is "what" the film is about and the plot is "how" the writer unfolds the action in the film
relating to what the film is about (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, p. 54). In describing The Wild
Bunch story into the outlaw's themed plot of violence, director Sam Peckinpah used dramatic impact
quick action cuts coupled with slow motion aesthetic balance to create a mood of chaos throughout
the fierce gun battle scenes which advantageously draws the viewer connecting them to the story of
the film.
Peckinpah chose to bring war and violence in a new level in the action packed western using his
editing style, sound and lighting elements, camera ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because the bounty hunters were on top of a roof, several shots were taken using a tilt movement
where the camera twists up and down on a single axis (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, Sec 6.6, Table
6.6, p. 152). A dolly camera was used to film the horses riding off in the streets which gave the
viewer the magically effect as if you were riding the horse away. Slow motion shots were taken
showing the impact of bullets hitting a man and falling to the ground as two young children
witnessed the bloody, violent shootout in front of their eyes. The lighting throughout this scene is
primarily natural outdoor lighting as this scene was taken during the day. The scene transitions back
and forth, inside and outside the bank during the shootout. Inside the bank, low–key lighting was
used. Haines (2000) noted, "Cinematographer, Lucien Ballard, made use of several different
techniques including Technicolor to take advantage of the clear, vivid skies and rich earth tones of
the western scenery" (p. 415). This technique captured the true beauty of a Western genre film which
allowed the viewer to escape into the imaginary foothills of the wild blue yonder.
The town itself is a major prop in this scene and the character's helped set the mood showing off the
complete chaos by all the screaming, horses running and gun shots going off everywhere. The
special effects of windows shattering, bullets hitting wood, bullets ricocheting, loud

Rhetorical Analysis Of Ursula Le Guin's American SF And...
Science fiction as a genre has always been thought of to be in a constant state of advancing. Whether
it be with new technology, a new type of society, or new creatures, science fiction is always
progressing and growing to be more and more complex. However, even as the majority of the
contents grow and expand, there are some things that rarely seem to change, and those things are the
status of women and "the other."
Ursula Le Guin's "American SF and The Other" is a rhetorical analysis on American science
fiction's lack of growth when it comes to "The Other." Le Guin discusses that "male elitism has run
rampant," meaning that any Alien that differs from the main – and likely male – individual will
remain alien. Any sort of character that is not the main characters is practically irrelevant in
American science fiction. The author analyzes the different types of Aliens ... Show more content on

Often they are left to be sexual objects for the pleasure of men. As an example, in many science
fiction video games, the "armor" women wear is normally just some glorified lingerie that in reality,
would never be able to protect a person in battle. I'm not trying to claim that science fiction needs to
portray reality, because I think if anything, science fiction is the perfect genre to express something
different from reality. But when it gets to the point when women are only there to be pleasing to the
eye, there's a problem. I also find it horribly ironic that while this degradation is forced onto women
in the science fiction world, they still face judgement and humiliation for obeying these standards
placed upon them. At conventions, women are harassed for their cosplay of science fiction
characters, likely for their "revealing" outfit, when they are just portraying what can be found within
the genre. It's unfair that women, even when acting as they are portrayed are still judged and

Blade Runner – a Method to the Generic Madness
This paper will look at Ridley Scott's use of distinctive characteristics from both science fiction and
film noir, in the multi–generic film Blade Runner.
In order to do this, we must first establish what the main characteristics are for film noir and science
fiction respectively. These can be divided into visual style, structure and narrational devices, plots,
characters and settings and finally worldview, morality and tone. The reason why it is important to
know these genres, is because genre consists of a set of codes, that are recognized and in turn
understood by both filmmaker and audience. This set of codes, once recognized, leads to
expectations of a certain style of mis–en–scene, narrative, type of characters etc. that ... Show more

While many science fiction movies take place in the future, they can also take place in alternative
timelines or in a past that contradicts the known historical facts. As long as there is a temporal
displacement, be it past or future, it can be science fiction. In addition to the temporal displacement,
there is frequently a spatial displacement as well, the setting being outer space, on spaceships or
other worlds, or other dimensions. Here we can again use Ridley Scott's film Alien as an example,
since is set in the future, temporal displacement, and takes place on a spaceship; spatial
displacement (Doll, 92).
The technology is futuristic and generally abundant, for an example; teleportation devices, AI's
(artificial intelligence) and hover cars, and is a major theme. The theme is typically in relation to too
rapid technological progress and "...invokes a basic paradox; omnipotence of human science and the
fragility of human society." ( Doll, 92).
Characters that are either mutants, AI's, aliens, androids/humanoid robots etc. are also important
characteristics.
Rushing and Frentz state that "Most science fiction critics place works dealing with the theme of
humanity versus the machine into one of two broad categories: "utopian" or "dystopian"." (1989,
62). In broad terms this means that most science fiction involving robots, androids and the like,

Fahrenheit 451 Literary Analysis
At the beginning of the book, we were asked to define speculative fiction. I defined speculative
fiction as, "The genre of science fiction fantasy and horror." Even after researching what speculative
fiction was, I still did not have a clear understanding. After many class discussions, I was able to
grasp a better understanding. I would define this genre in which it contains basic elements of science
fiction mainly because of the setting that the book takes place in. In Fahrenheit 451, the novel takes
place in the future where society in the novel is very different from our own. Montag's society is
oppressive and totalitarian where the government takes control of the citizens by keeping them
scared and by brainwashing them into thinking that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

quickly. Television tricks you into thinking about nothing and putting false images and situations
into your head because "it becomes and is the truth" (80), the truth that the government wants to you
to believe. Speculative fiction is also shown when the technology that they have is way more
advanced than we have now. The "parlor" that contains "literally not just one wall but, so far, three!"
(41) filled with television is not anything close to what we have today, but one day it is not
impossible for us to have in the near future. Another example would be the mechanical hound that

Film Analysis: Night Of The Living Dead
The genre I picked to match up with Primitive, Classic, Revisionist, and Parodic is horror. I love
horror so the movies that I have picked would match up with all 4 of them and I also like to note that
3 out of the 4 movies I have picked are made by George Romero. For Primitive I choose the movie
is Nosferafu because at that time and from what I learn it I concluded that because of that movie it
gave the start of that dark eerie feeling in horror films which are used today. For Classic I choose
Night of the living dead (1968 version), it was one of Romero's top films that pushed him to be the
famous producer he is today. Revisionist would be dawn of the dead 1978 vs 2004 remake; I think
there are a lot of differences but also similarities between the 2 movies. Parodic would be Shaun of

Not at all like numerous other contemporary blood and gore movies, Night of the Living Dead was
shot in high contrast and is outstanding for its shocking, unsettling authenticity which looks like the
Vietnam footage that circulated each night on television. Alongside the film's grainy tasteful, regular
lighting, hand–held shooting, and its utilization of characteristic areas, these irregular methods "gave
[Romero's] gorefest the look and feel of a doc." As indicated by Romero, the film's monochromatic
cinematography was expressly used to give Night of the Living Dead a valid feeling, since "In those
days the news was in highly contrasting. It was a great deal more reasonable in those days". Indeed,
even the dialect utilized as a part of the film is like the one connected with Vietnam; e.g. at the point
when a group is out to slaughter zombies close to the end of the film, a transmission inside Night of
the Living Dead alludes to their main goal as "Hunt and annihilate", which was an infamous
Vietnam War military procedure. (wikipedia, night of the living dead,

Feeding On Fantasy By Lev Grossman
Feeding on Fantasy
'Feeding on Fantasy' is an article written by Lev Grossman. Lev Grossman was born in 1969, in
Lexington, MA. Both of his parents were English professors, so he has always read a lot, especially
in graduate school. He is himself a novelist, with several books at the number one spot on the New
York Times bestseller list. He has also studied literature, just like his parents, and is now an
experienced book critic at 'Time Magazine'.
Lev Grossman cleverly starts out his article 'Feeding on Fantasy' with telling a story. As you are
reading it, you have no clue that it is a story, until he tells the knight is an inventor from the real
world. By doing this, he quickly introduces the theme of the article, which is fantasy, just ... Show

Using all three forms of appeal is very smart, because it will ensure that he gets his point across, just
as he wants it.
The reason why Lev Grossman has written this article is maybe that he wants other people to read
fantasy too. He wants other people to feel, what he feels, when he reads fantasy. He has found the

Value Of Science Fiction
The popularity of science fiction is the consequent of high recognition in literature and
entertainment industry. Yet, still some of the scholars merely view this genre as points of departure
for critics and argument (Reider 2010, p.205). Regardless of the criticisms and argument from the
scholarly sector, an important consideration is the extent to which science fiction genre could bring
about future possibilities to the current state of the world. If we, the society as a whole could uphold
this futuristic vision, science fiction would be generally recognised as a valuable genre in all
disciplinary fields. This essay will argue that despite of the fact that science fiction somewhat

However, prior to the actual introduction of this technological devices, majority of the people
believed that the "communicator" is just a fantasy tool and has seemingly nothing in reality to which
it can relate to. This perception has now been challenged, and depicts that fantasy dramatic
technology has in fact turned into realism.
Moreover, science fiction opens space for embedding fantasy features to address contemporary
ecological issues. At the current ecology state, the present irresponsible human action towards the
natural environment could significantly impact the future generations. This concept is presented in
the movie of Avatar (2009), whereby the military and business corporation are so much capitalist
ideology driven. The main motive is to exploit natural resources for economic reasons. Specifically,
the director of Avatar aims to convey a strong theme regarding our current relationship with the
environment, and hoping that future technologies could switch its priority to natural environment
protection rather mainly focusing on capitalism. This point of perspective is indeed reflected in a
famous novelist Toni Morrison who writes in her novel that "We never shape the world. The world
shapes us" (2008, p.83). In other words, we are not the special creatures on this planet and the its
nature existence is not there to serve us or to exploit

knowledge in its plot, setting, theme, etc." goodreads.com lists science fiction as, "a broad genre of

Adolescents deal with a lot through this phase of life. They are bombarded with the many changes
that have been on their course of development and growth. In this journey, they discover new ideals

Essay on Western Movies Since 1960
A NOT–SO–ACCURATE prophet once wrote, "As recently as 1972, there were a tremendous
number of quality Westerns being made . . . and since there seems to be a ten–year cycle in Western
movie making, I'd say we'll see more in about 1982." 1 In 1982 only two Westerns were
released, and neither was exactly a major success. Barbarosa, starring Willie Nelson, drew some
respectable reviews–and some very damaging ones–but nobody went to see the film. The Ballad of
Gregorio Cortez appeared first on PBS television, then later went into general release. Today the
Western seems to be deader than the California Med–fly. Critics and aficionados of the form can
only hear, as with Arnold's sea of faith, its long receding roar.

? Obviously it couldn't. For all subsequent generations, then, the Western has to be rediscovered,
like some store of ancient literature one studies in school.
Reviewing the last twenty–five years of the Western, 1960–1985, is salutary for both aficionados
and novices. The sixties began with a great film done in the sparest, most austere classical manner,
Budd Boetticher's Comanche Station (1960). The last of the Renown cycle of seven films that
Boetticher made with Randolph Scott, Comanche Station reduces the elements of the journey
Western to create one of its purest expressions ever. Scott is an aging knight, a man "always
alone in Comanche country," who, reminiscent of John Wayne's searcher, hunts endlessly for
his wife, taken ten years previously by the Comanches. He buys a woman out of captivity–not his
wife, of course, whom he will never find–and escorts her back to her husband. The journey pits him
against a charming, evil adversary (Claude Akins), and the trip becomes the occasion for a moral
dialectic of the kind for which the Western seems the perfect vehicle. In the end the villain adopts
Scott's code, dying honorably, and Scott delivers the wife to her husband. He turns out to be a blind
man, a fact that surprises and pleases because all through the film we have worried, along with
Scott, about what kind of man would leave such a woman to another's care. It is a great film, and

Fiction 1950-1963 Rob Lapham Analysis
Fiction 1950 – 1963
Some people argue that, a step forward may bring great success by altering old ideas, such as
different means of literature, that have been accepted as a common norm for many decades.
Furthermore, advancements through new and diverse ideas may shape the world of literature and
writing on a global scale. In the article, "Fiction 1950 – 1963," by Rob Latham, it is evident that
even when popular trends become overthrown by new styles and ideas; it may still bring success and
a curious audience to a new period of the science fiction genre.

Following the downfall of the pulp genre in the late 1950's, it has sprouted a new heritage of science
fiction which would be labeled as "mainstream literature," and would also later make its way to
classrooms as legitimate objects of study. Rather than catering to magazine editors who demanded
specific ideological or accurate certainty, authors could begin to imagine themselves as
"independent professionals with their own unique artistic visions." (Latham, 3). In other words,
Latham claims that the authors who were icons in the pulp genre had fled and had their places
"taken by competent but largely second–rank talents," (Latham, 9) who bring new ideas to the table.
Despite the rapid change, the New Wave movement presented "new literary techniques and modes
of expression." (Ashley, Mike. Transformations. p251–252). The explosion of magazine markets and
the constant pressure for material to fill them made authors less cautious in their choices of what
they chose fill the market with. This inevitably opened up many doors for new genres, sparking
creativity and influence across the market. As Paul Boyer comments, "the status of the genre rose."
(Boyer 1985: 257–8, 8). Through this, Latham is able to develop his argument and demonstrate
plausible support on the advancements of the magazine market and the science fiction genre

Forgiveness Found in Poetry, Drama, and Fiction

one. Remarkably, I found in each of the genres explored insightful and supportive content from each
unit that has enabled me to hone in and accept my humanity as a parent. Connecting with characters
from each genre brought about a significant awareness and sensitivity. Regardless of geographical
location, date in time, structure of society, gender, race, or age, it is refreshingly evident in the midst
of all the contrasts there is a commonality; we are all imperfect humans. Each genre enhanced my
credence of making mistakes as we go through this journey of life, it is clear we struggle not only as
humans but more significantly, for this reader, as parents. Parents attempt do what is felt to be right

mercy is required when our flawed human nature is revealed by our mistaken repetition of the
mistake, which can create a greater burden adding regret. I find myself sympathetically identifying
with these characters, as they too walk the bumpy road of when your best isn't good enough.

have prominent careers in contemporary television. Each of these men starred together on Saturday
Night Live, a show built on parody and intertextual humor. Thus, audiences, if they are familiar with
the creators and stars, are primed to decode the episode as a similarly light–hearted parody based on
their previous knowledge. These audience expectations are reinforced by the creators' other roles on
television, which also include parodies, such as, Seth Meyers' job hosting Late Night and Fred
Armisen's other show. Portlandia, on IFC, a network known for its parodic programs. Viewers'

Voices Of California Essay
On Friday, there was an event where guest readers would read their works to the UC Merced
campus. The title for the readings was "Voices of California: Tell Me a Story". The event featured
three different readers, who were Micah Perks, Brynn Saito, and Optimism One. Each reader had
different genres of writing. Each of the readers will tell us stories that involved California, implicitly
and explicitly. They will take us on a journey that will allow us to explore the wonders in writing
and how we can use it to our benefits.
The first reader was Micah Perks who is an American writer and memoirist. The story she read was
called "There Once Was a Man Who Longed for a Child. The story focused on a man who had to

She read a variety of different poems. One of the poems was called What'll It Be. The poem is about
a woman warrior who is drinking whiskey in bar. Before this occurred her hometown was burned by
six hundred men. She eventually fled her home and found love. But, then she lost it and found
herself at the bar drowning herself in alcohol. Another poem that she read was Intergenerational.
The poem is about a woman warrior who is thinking about justice. As the woman look out to the
moon, the woman knows how slow time is, even after many years. Women continues to love men
and men continue to love. Love would continue to be a tool to mend those who are hurt. Brynn Saito
also reads a poem that she wrote about a nerve injury. The title of the poem is Things I Never Knew

Crime Drama Genre Analysis
The crime drama genre has persevered through numerous progressions since the times of 'Dickson

progression inside crime genre saw them in the end showing police procedural's. This was a first for
TV, the audience not just observed the crime and the apprehension of the criminal, yet out of the
blue, the entire crime solving network was opened for the crowd to see. Crime scene investigation
and lawful administration where displayed inside the shows. This developed into crime shows that
concentrated exclusively on these different components that were beforehand hidden. Shows, for

The Use Of Makeup In Horror Films
Many people around us and in the world use make up, on a daily basis and the reason for this is that
some people believe that it makes look more professional or more appealing than they are. And
there are many different places where makeup is used and for different purposes, one of those
purposes is in films. There are also many reasons why makeup is used in films and one of them is
because people have to look representable on television, but there is a genre of films where people
are supposed to look horrifying and those are horror films, which is what I will be focussing on.
In the early years of motion picture history, horror was often used in order to attract, frighten and
fascinate the audiences. Lon Chaney was well known for his portrayals

Artificiality In William Gibson's Neuromancer
Science Fiction provokes the audience to question their values as they are invited to a futuristic
society which resembles our modern world. Science Fiction serves as a speculative fiction based on
the composer's concerns towards modern society as referenced through William Gibson's statement
"It's a way of trying to come to terms with the awe and terror inspired in me by the world in which
we live". The fundamental values of morality and humanity have been replaced by greed and human
kind's obsession to play the role of God through science and technology. This is demonstrated
through Gibson's Neuromancer where the composer reflects Science Fiction conventions within his
composition. Gibson explores the subgenre 'cyberpunk' in examining the ... Show more content on

Everything within this world is manufactured and lacks the sensory experience of things in the
natural world. The use of onomatopoeia "She'd reached out and touched this, her artificial nails
clicking against the Lexan sandwich protecting the broken glass", emphasises the absence of
sensory experience towards natural elements due to the reliability towards artificiality. The absence
of nature and artificiality suggests that society has ruined, damaged and completely destroyed
natural resources. This is demonstrated in the visual imagery "The sky above the port was the colour
of television, tuned to a dead channel", where technology plays an essential role within
Neuromancer society, that they neglect natural elements. The world has now turned to medical
intervention, technology and Science to preserve life through artificial means. Gibson assesses the
use of technology within society, setting limitation of the extent of reliability towards science and
technology, ensuring that it doesn't intervene with morals and ethics. The people in this society are
fixated on extending their lives through a medical intervention such as the replacement of limbs.
This obsession is best represented in the characterisation of Julius Deane, "Julius Deane was one
hundred and thirty–five years old, his metabolism assiduously warped by a weekly fortune in
serums and hormones... genetic surgeons reset the code of his DNA". Greed for money has replaced
God, ethics and natural order. Attaining and preserving status and wealth has become their priority/
'God' and they are willing to do anything illegal to acquire it. In this society everyone follows the
same way of living to survive, without care for others or for a higher being. This leads to an absence
of a real connection between nature and people. The relationships between people are superficial
and lack emotional

Comparison Between The Simpsons and Futurama Essay
Comparison Between The Simpsons and Futurama
The word genre can be used to describe several things such as books, films and television
programmes. It means the theme of the book, e.t.c. and in the case of a film or programme means
either horror, thriller, comedy, romantic. It is important that a programme or film makes clear what
genre it is. For example, a horror should make you cower in fear and a thriller should keep you on
the edge of your seat. In the case of a comedy, which I have chosen to compare, it must make you
cry with laughter. What genre a piece of media is, also helps you to choose the things that you like. I

Medic Noir Gender Analysis
Over the recent years Scandinavian crime fiction have captivated television audiences around the
world. This phenomenon, known broadly as 'Nordic Noir,' is characterised by bleak, gothic
landscapes, and obsessive and socially isolated protagonists who push themselves to solve the cases
no one else seems to be able to solve. This chapter will illustrate how Nordic Noir deploys the film
noir narrative tropes, and how it reimagined its heroes and heroines. With themes of gender politics
and its role in creating representation and imagination, I will discuss how film noir deploys its
depictions of gender and how it is constructed for contemporary television that embodies feminism.

There are women in classic film noir with a similar defiant attitude, to whom the male hero often
experiences a sexual attraction: the femme fatale. These women are studied as symbols of 'peculiar'
power: carrying guns, smoking cigarettes, and going after what they want, similar to the men in
these narratives (Gledhill, 1998, p. 24). The femme fatales are mysterious, ambiguous and most
significantly: deadly. These women and their power are however mainly defined by their sexuality
and the men often still hold the voice of authority – mainly through voice overs and flashbacks
(Gledhill, 1998, p. 24). They are both desirable and dangerous to men (Kaplan, 1998, p. 16). The
film noir's femme fatale has for a long time served as a record for anxieties about female sexuality
and power, which will be discussed more deeply later in this chapter. The femme fatale fights
against the male domination and often ends op losing her life or freedom. "The resistance of these
femme fatales are always fatal, if not to herself, it will be to the men who fall for her" (Wager, 2005,
p. 4). With the dangers that her sexual performance causes, the classic genre exposed the limitations
of a female heroine. It suggests that terrible things would happen if men let these sexual women
distract them from their quest, and that the power that these particular women hold, is profoundly
dangerous. The sex and gender issues that derive from the femme fatale's presence supposedly
trigger the inevitable demise of herself and the hero, but it is nonetheless important to notice that
these early film noirs offered audiences a female character that, although destructive, is not weak,

Codes and Conventions of Genres Essay
Codes and Conventions of Genres
A genre is a particular type of commodity . It has characteristic features that are known to and
recognised by the audiences because the same formula is reproduced many times.
Genre is a French word meaning that refers to types or categories of media products. Soap operas,
situation comedies, police series, quiz shows and news programmes are just some of the genres to be
found in television. Genres are identified by the particular conventions they use which are
recognised through regular contact. Conventions are any elements which are repeated in such a way
that they become familiar, predictable and associated in their use with a particular genre. ... Show

Black or female newsreaders, for example, have been appearing more frequently in recent years
therefore representing equality in society. However if generic conventions are simply repeated over
and over the films made could be dull and too predictable. The filmmaker relies upon conventions
but also mixes them with his or her own version and ideas in order to produce a successfully
constructed form of genre.
Nearly all stories in any genre are about situations which are disrupted by a problem for e.g., a
peaceful village is wrecked by robbers and one of the children is taken hostage, the villages find try
to find ways of getting the child back the 'good guy' is used to help the narrative along and therefore
resolves the problem. The purpose of the story provides tension for the audience, as on the other
hand the audience wish the problem to be solved but on the other hand the audience want the story
to continue in order to maintain the pleasure. Narratives have to operate strategies for both moving
towards a solution and yet simultaneously putting it off by complaints.
Genres are popular because they deal with universal dilemmas and appeal to universal needs. For
example, the dilemmas could be the hero or heroine fighting to clear his or her name; good finally
overcoming evil. Genres are entertaining in their own ways

Television : The Sitcom Genre
Sitcoms have been one of the most popular and influential television genres for years on end. From
some of the oldies like I Love Lucy to some of the more recent ones like New Girl , this genre
succeeds in appealing to all people through eye catching drama, witty comedy, and lighthearted
romance. Almost all viewers are guilty of singing their favorite theme songs or throwing out some
popular catchphrases from some of their beloved characters on the show. The television show
Friends, which aired in 1994, is still one of the most watched sitcoms in history. Even though the
show ended in 2004, reruns still play on T.V and Netflix has even added the show to its database
because of its undying popularity. Even a bit older than Friends, Full House aired its first episode in
1987 and its last in 1995. This shows popularity and influence prompted a continuation of the show,
Fuller House, that is currently in production more than twenty years later. Both sitcoms of Friends
and Full House demonstrate how the sitcom genre, along with the sub–genres associated with it has
had and continues to have a tremendous influence on pop culture. One of the reasons why sitcoms
influence pop culture is because viewers incorporate aspects of the show into their personal lives.
Most Friends fans can admit to incorporating elements from the show into their lives through either
quotes, mannerisms, or styles. In fact, Friends has influenced several parts of society as a whole.

Evolution Of True Crime

been wrongly convicted to tell their story.
True crime has a long history that dates back to the Elizabethan era, where the genre was
represented in the form of biographies of prisoners before and after their executions. For the most

Essay On Cyberpunk
While science fiction was once primarily "about science," it has since evolved into a far–reaching
field that encompasses a variety of subgenres. ⦁ cyberpunk: The cyberpunk genre emerged in the
early 1980s; combining cybernetics and punk, the term was coined by author Bruce Bethke for his
1980 short story Cyberpunk. The time frame is usually near–future and the settings are often
dystopian in nature and characterized by misery. Common themes in cyberpunk include advances in
information technology and especially the Internet, visually abstracted as cyberspace and artificial
intelligence. ⦁ Time travel: Time travel stories have antecedents in the 18th and 19th centuries. Time
travel continues to be a popular subject in modern science fiction, in print, movies, and television
episodes of Stargate SG1 and the BBC television series Doctor Who. ⦁ Alternative history :
Alternative history stories are based on the premise that historical events might have turned out
differently. These stories may use time travel to change the past, or may simply set a story in a
universe with a different history from our own. ⦁ Military SF: Military science fiction is set in the

Essay about Mittell’s Television Genre Theory and Louie
Originally published in Cinema Journal 40, No. 3, Spring 2001, Jason Mittell's "A Cultural
Approach to Television Genre Theory" conceives of television genre as a cultural category rather
than merely a textual component. In the decade since the original publishing of the article, television
has evolved out of the multi–channel era and into the post–network era. In this new television
landscape, genres are no longer a fixed entity1, and there is great academic potential in the in the

Finally, this concept of genre will be applied to the development of the central questions in my final
project.
LOUIE: A GENERIC DISCOURSE
Mittell suggests that genre studies should negotiate between specificity and generality, and offers the
following as an approach: "The second way would be to start with a specific media case study and
analyze how genre processes operate within this specific instance. Such projects might isolate a
variety of starting points–an industrial formation, audience practices, a textual instance, a policy
decision, or a moment in social history. We may start with a textual case to motivate our study, but
we must still examine how genres transcend textual boundaries and operate within audience and
industry practices as well.3" Also, according to the article, "we should focus on the breadth of
discursive enunciations around any given instance, mapping out as many articulations of genre as
possible and situating them within larger cultural contexts and relations of power.4" So, any generic
discourse must begin with a full understanding of the context of a particular text–in this case, Louie.

Analyzing The Movie 'Screwball'
Movies that fall into the genre of comedy are made to amuse and entertain just in the way the movie
Tootsie did. Tootsie is a classic example of a comedy with its exaggerated situations and witty
dialogue. The director Sydney Pollack was able to bring his lead actor, Dustin Hoffman, and his lead
actress, Jessica Lange, together in this gender–bending comedy.
Tootsie is the story of an unsuccessful actor named Michael Dorsey who is told by his agent that no
one will hire him. In a desperate attempt to get a roll (and some cash), he auditions for a tv show,
but, as a woman named Dorothy Michaels. During his time acting as a woman, none suspects
anything fishy until he falls in love with an actress, Julie, from the show. In the end he has to decide

Some conventions crime dramas may conform to, are that they are usually set in well–known places,
this is because there is usually high crime rate there, this can also be related to the uses and
gratification theory where there is something being learned so it comes under the education
category. Another convention is that the titles usually give away a little bit about the programme e.g.

Similarities And Differences Between Scrooge And A...
"Bah Humbug!" Immediately, Scrooge and A Christmas Carol come to mind. A Christmas Carol,
originally written in 1843 by Charles Dickens, takes place in Victorian London where a greedy,
negative Scrooge learns that compassion and giving are more important in life. Over the years,
numerous adaptations of this classic story have been developed. One of these versions is the
dramatized version by Frederick Gaines. Another version is the 1984 television–movie directed by
Roger O. Hirson. These two versions of A Christmas Carol share similarities, however many
differences appear while delivering the theme of family and the importance of giving.
The drama and the movie may still have differences in genres but have the main similarity of
showing that Scrooge changed. Scrooge changes from being a rude and greedy man to one that cares
for the people around him. But to get to his full potential he has to take it step by step. The spirit's
help him do this. In scene 3 of The Christmas Carol The spirit of Christmas past shows scrooge
different moments of his past to show how he acted towards people and how it affected his future.
Scrooge begins to change when he sees Fezziwig, his old mentor. In scene three of the drama it says,
" I should like to be able to say a word or two to my clerk just now, that's all." By saying this it
shows that Scrooge wants to apologize to Cratchit for being rude to him. He wants to apologize to
Cratchit because of the way he could have treated him, like Fezziwig treated Scrooge. They would
show Scrooge changing in this way because he is hesitant to really admit he wants to apologize. But
is starting to see how he has really acted. In the video version of The Christmas Carol you can see
Scrooge changing by showing the good parts of his past. The 1st spirit shows Scrooge the Christmas
party with dancing and joy. They also show Belle, his sweetheart. In the movie Scrooge sees how
happy young Scrooge is and smiles. He also taps his feet to the music. They showed Scrooge

ABSTRACT
Indian English Literature constitutes the works of the Indian authors, poets and literary artists who
compose their works in English language. Indian English literature has drawn the attention from
every quarter of the country, making the genre magnificent in its own right. The writers of this genre
have skillfully made use of their own intelligence and intellect in weaving the web of their literary
works. While studying their literary works, the Indian audience finds a kind of close association

Thus, it can be said that Kamala Dass has contributed immensely to the development of modern
Indian English poetry. She has successfully been able to assert herself through her poems. She,
through her literary gift of poetry, has been able to pour her heart out; as a result of which, we,
through her poems, are able to look into her subjective, anguished, tortured and painful psyche
which in turn has rated her as one of the greatest confessional poets.
Focusing on another genre of Indian English literature, I move on to bring to the fore the
development of drama. India has the longest as well as the richest tradition in drama. It existed
during the age of Vedic Aryans, under the British rule and after independence, this genre gained
great prominence in the field of literature. It is this genre which was largely influenced by the

Reality Television Is A Genre Of Programming
When watching tv, we do not reality question what we watch or why we enjoy it. Simply, shows like
"The Bachelor" and "The Jersey Shore" are the entertaining pieces we need to watch after a very
long, stressful day. Not only is it comic relief, but these shows express drama, suspense, and
laughter while pushing the element of morally and socially acceptable situations that keep the
viewers fixated. These shows fit the definition of reality television. Going through the television
guide, it is amazing to see how many different reality shows are out there. The reality genre involves
three major categories: game shows, dating shows, and talent shows. In the United States, reality
television now accounts for almost 70 to 80 percent of television viewership (Klien, 2013).
However, reality television did not really exist until the 1900s. While there are a view shows
showing back in the 1940s, it was not until the 1990s when reality viewing was a sensation. Reality
television is a genre of programming that is unscripted real–life situations featuring individuals
during their lives and countless environments the audience can relate to. Reality tv technology is

escape back to earth inside a rocket in the film Le Voyage Dans La Lune to the story of a man
saving the human race from a famine by travelling through a wormhole to another planet that can
support the human race in the story Interstellar written by Christopher Nolan. Science Fiction has
become one of the top grossing film genres accumulating nearly 9 trillion dollars ($8,932,256,387)
worldwide. In the future moviegoers will witness filmmakers push the boundaries for what the
general public will recognize as "Science Fiction". One of the interesting discoveries we made was
that the "mid–future" (50–150 years in the future) is one of the most popular time periods when
being used in the genre. With advances in technology it is very hard not to see the progress that
these films have become and eventually will

American Vandal Satire
Mockumentaries are an over–looked current new genre of television, According to Dictionary.com
they are "a movie or television show depicting fictional events but presented as a documentary."
Most mockumentaries often overlap into the comedy genre, and are sometimes called satirical or
parody documentaries. Dictionary.com also states the word parody as, "a humorous or satirical
imitation of a serious piece of literature or writing." American Vandal and Making a Murderer are
two effectively different television shows that were released in 2016. American Vandal is a prime
example of a satirical documentary, while Making a Murderer is a clear example of a regular
documentary. Although both shows, American Vandal and Making a Murderer, shed light ... Show

All of them playing a different role in the investigation and story. Each character is investigated in a
different way, revealing things a common documentary wouldn't. Making a Murderer interviews
many different people and sheds light on their opinions and thoughts, but fails to dive as deep as
American Vandal. In American Vandal everyone who could have possibly committed the crime was
thoroughly interviewed with their side of the story and what they accounted for that day. You
quickly learn of each and everyone's backstory and how they all relate to the case. A narrator follows
the accused party, Dylan Maxwell, and asks him a serious a questions and tries to see the problem
through both sides. Throughout these questions and the show we learn who Dylan really is. He is a
loyal, confident, laidback, comedic, curious, loving, and troublemaking individual. Throughout
Making a Murder we learn very little about the accused party Steven Avery's characteristics. What
we learned was that he was a father, prior criminal, and is not the brightest individual. While you
don't completely get an idea on who Steven Avery really is throughout the ten episode series, you
get a great idea on who Dylan Maxwell really is in American Vandal's eight episode

Aren T You The Good Man Analysis
Welcome back to the Phaser–zone a podcast traversing a galaxy of texts as we endeavour to explore
the perpetual new world that is the science fiction genre.
Adam Roberts, academic, critic and novelist claimed, "Science fiction is about the encounter with
difference. At its best science fiction provides the most supple and the most popular means of
exploring diversity and difference; it opens up new possibilities; it makes us think." Today we'll be
exploring that difference as it's represented within the very genre itself, mutating from its origins in
Swift's Gulliver's Travels, to become Scott's Blade Runner, and the virtual reality of Gibson's
Neuromancer. As represented in Pohl's Day Million and Sandberg's Kung Fury, Sci–Fi as an ever–

Blade Runner's L.A. 2019 sets the scene, a sprawl of urban spires amidst fiery miasma presenting
our nightmarish future in an aerial shot. Our anti–hero is Deckard, a bureaucratic detective
confronting the world in monochrome, impassive as he methodically "retires" replicants. Riddley
Scott's euphemism sparks immediate discomfort, estranging us as we witness the progressive
humanisation of replicants throughout the film, in Rachel's tears and Roy Batty's breakdown beside
the lifeless Pris. Machines become more deserving of our empathy, whereas Deckard, a seemingly
flat character is simply there to "do his job." Blade Runner's "Voight–Kampff test" is the
quintessential exploration of Roberts' "diversity and difference" [or lack of], assisting in the testing
of individuals to discover potential artificiality. However, Scott's mise en scene establishes the
apparatus as solely measuring bodily functions such as heart rate and eye movement in response to
emotionally provocative questions. Thus, by measuring the physical to scrutinise the human, Scott
suggests replicants, though imitations of humans are virtually indiscernible in regard to emotive
response. Furthermore, emotive response being product of the human condition, "opens up new
possibilities" of technological adoption of human individuality. Scott's Rachel, and Roy Batty have
become Tyrell's vision – "more human than human" and arguably more so than our traditional hero.
Therefore, as Scott's Blade Runner gives rise to concerns regarding the distinction between human
and commodity, science fiction "makes us think" about the nature of our moral certainties,
invariably changing with interminable scientific and technological

The Walking Dead Westerns Summary

  • 1. The Walking Dead Westerns Summary I would consider the 'Walking Dead' a western but more of a modernized Sci–Fi type of western. In the article by Massik, Solomon "The Walking Dead, Westerns, and the New Westerns" it describes how the 'Walking Dead' is a western because of the guns, violence and the lawless frontier. I agree with this because that's how I imagine most westerns be with people with guns and they were allowed to use them more freely than what they are now. Western males always had guns at hand just like in the 'Walking Dead' but since it's a modernized show females also carry guns. Massik also mentioned how westerns took over land through massive killings, this is exactly what happens in the 'Walking Dead' the people in the show kill off many "walkers" from various ... It is a tribute to the Broadway show of the 1950's. It was directed by Randal Klieser and was released on July 7th 1978. The music and dance scenes are what attracted me to Grease. My favorite characters are John Travolta and Jeff Conaway who play Danny and Kenickie. I like these two because they are your typical high school popular boys who are always looking out for each other, looking good and they are always trying to get the beautiful girls but at the same time acting cool like it doesn't bother them. I had high expectations of Grease and I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Secondly genre is the French word meaning type. Genres may be approached by way of various critical avenues. In the Aristotelian strain we recognize genres as kinds within a system of classification. These categories beg further definition, so there is a history of, on the one hand, the refinement of divisions and subdivisions, and on the other a Platonic search for the 'essential' qualities of tragedy, comedy, epic poetry, and so forth. By the recognition of genres we begin to find our way in the universe of verbal artifacts with their feigned discourses, and to train our expectations upon the experience that lies in wait for us. Grease's genre is a hybrid genre because it is a cross between a comedy, a teen movie and romantic. Lastly representation is the act of representing or the state of being represented. Also it is something that represents an image, an account or statement, an expostulation or a presentation or production. For example the representation of the characters in Grease varies. Sandy is portrayed as a pure and innocent girl but on the other hand Rizzo is portrayed as a bad girl who is always getting into trouble and won't take anything from no one. Also Rizzo is sometimes mean to Sandy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Television Genre And Style Of Mockumentaries Essay Within the realm of television today, many of the more popular comedies have a very specific style of production and way of capturing scenes. This style is often referred to as the "Mockumentary" style and can be seen within examples like The Office and Park and Recreation. The popularity of these shows alone have inspired many other different spin–offs and takes on this specific style of comedy, but these shows shouldn't be credited as the "founders" of the mockumentary style. In fact, for television shows the mockumentary's history goes farther back by a couple of decades. This paper will attempt to discover the answers to three main questions regarding the television genre and style of mockumentaries. Firstly, the definition of a mockumentary and a general understanding of the stylistic similarities must be examined before the history of the mockumentary is to be explored. Next, the historical background will be considered as well as the cultural significance and impact of the shows that emulated this mockumentary style. Lastly, the paper will look to the current cultural contexts and the social impacts of the popular, modern day televisions shows that incorporate these styles. Through the analysis of the mockumentary style in the combination of the historical lens and the definitional lens, modern day shows that utilize this subgenre will be better understood as well as their impacts on society itself. According to Oxford Dictionary, a mockumentary can simply be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Story is "what" the film is about and the plot is "how" the writer unfolds the action in the film relating to what the film is about (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, p. 54). In describing The Wild Bunch story into the outlaw's themed plot of violence, director Sam Peckinpah used dramatic impact quick action cuts coupled with slow motion aesthetic balance to create a mood of chaos throughout the fierce gun battle scenes which advantageously draws the viewer connecting them to the story of the film. Peckinpah chose to bring war and violence in a new level in the action packed western using his editing style, sound and lighting elements, camera ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because the bounty hunters were on top of a roof, several shots were taken using a tilt movement where the camera twists up and down on a single axis (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, Sec 6.6, Table 6.6, p. 152). A dolly camera was used to film the horses riding off in the streets which gave the viewer the magically effect as if you were riding the horse away. Slow motion shots were taken showing the impact of bullets hitting a man and falling to the ground as two young children witnessed the bloody, violent shootout in front of their eyes. The lighting throughout this scene is primarily natural outdoor lighting as this scene was taken during the day. The scene transitions back and forth, inside and outside the bank during the shootout. Inside the bank, low–key lighting was used. Haines (2000) noted, "Cinematographer, Lucien Ballard, made use of several different techniques including Technicolor to take advantage of the clear, vivid skies and rich earth tones of the western scenery" (p. 415). This technique captured the true beauty of a Western genre film which allowed the viewer to escape into the imaginary foothills of the wild blue yonder. The town itself is a major prop in this scene and the character's helped set the mood showing off the complete chaos by all the screaming, horses running and gun shots going off everywhere. • 17. Rhetorical Analysis Of Ursula Le Guin's American SF And... Science fiction as a genre has always been thought of to be in a constant state of advancing. Whether it be with new technology, a new type of society, or new creatures, science fiction is always progressing and growing to be more and more complex. However, even as the majority of the contents grow and expand, there are some things that rarely seem to change, and those things are the status of women and "the other." Ursula Le Guin's "American SF and The Other" is a rhetorical analysis on American science fiction's lack of growth when it comes to "The Other." Le Guin discusses that "male elitism has run rampant," meaning that any Alien that differs from the main – and likely male – individual will remain alien. Any sort of character that is not the main characters is practically irrelevant in American science fiction. The author analyzes the different types of Aliens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Often they are left to be sexual objects for the pleasure of men. As an example, in many science fiction video games, the "armor" women wear is normally just some glorified lingerie that in reality, would never be able to protect a person in battle. I'm not trying to claim that science fiction needs to portray reality, because I think if anything, science fiction is the perfect genre to express something different from reality. But when it gets to the point when women are only there to be pleasing to the eye, there's a problem. I also find it horribly ironic that while this degradation is forced onto women in the science fiction world, they still face judgement and humiliation for obeying these standards placed upon them. At conventions, women are harassed for their cosplay of science fiction characters, likely for their "revealing" outfit, when they are just portraying what can be found within the genre. It's unfair that women, even when acting as they are portrayed are still judged and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Blade Runner – a Method to the Generic Madness This paper will look at Ridley Scott's use of distinctive characteristics from both science fiction and film noir, in the multi–generic film Blade Runner. In order to do this, we must first establish what the main characteristics are for film noir and science fiction respectively. These can be divided into visual style, structure and narrational devices, plots, characters and settings and finally worldview, morality and tone. The reason why it is important to know these genres, is because genre consists of a set of codes, that are recognized and in turn understood by both filmmaker and audience. While many science fiction movies take place in the future, they can also take place in alternative timelines or in a past that contradicts the known historical facts. As long as there is a temporal displacement, be it past or future, it can be science fiction. In addition to the temporal displacement, there is frequently a spatial displacement as well, the setting being outer space, on spaceships or other worlds, or other dimensions. Here we can again use Ridley Scott's film Alien as an example, since is set in the future, temporal displacement, and takes place on a spaceship; spatial displacement (Doll, 92). The technology is futuristic and generally abundant, for an example; teleportation devices, AI's (artificial intelligence) and hover cars, and is a major theme. The theme is typically in relation to too rapid technological progress and "...invokes a basic paradox; omnipotence of human science and the fragility of human society." ( Doll, 92). Characters that are either mutants, AI's, aliens, androids/humanoid robots etc. are also important characteristics. Rushing and Frentz state that "Most science fiction critics place works dealing with the theme of humanity versus the machine into one of two broad categories: "utopian" or "dystopian"." (1989, 62). • 25. Fahrenheit 451 Literary Analysis At the beginning of the book, we were asked to define speculative fiction. I defined speculative fiction as, "The genre of science fiction fantasy and horror." Even after researching what speculative fiction was, I still did not have a clear understanding. After many class discussions, I was able to grasp a better understanding. I would define this genre in which it contains basic elements of science fiction mainly because of the setting that the book takes place in. In Fahrenheit 451, the novel takes place in the future where society in the novel is very different from our own. Montag's society is oppressive and totalitarian where the government takes control of the citizens by keeping them scared and by brainwashing them into thinking that ... Television tricks you into thinking about nothing and putting false images and situations into your head because "it becomes and is the truth" (80), the truth that the government wants to you to believe. Speculative fiction is also shown when the technology that they have is way more advanced than we have now. The "parlor" that contains "literally not just one wall but, so far, three!" I have an obsession love for the genre that has spurred on my very first novel and a short story as well. Today, I'm going to give you the top 7 post–apocalyptic shows that will inspire you, make you cringe, and make you glad that you're watching events unfold across a screen and not in real life. Without further ado: Post–Apocalyptic Must–See Television 7. The Last Man on Earth – 2014 – Still Running – I begrudgingly add this show to the list because I have to admit, after watching the last episode, that I actually liked to show. It's fast– paced, and the surprise reason why the power can't be turned on is smart, interesting, and not at all run–of–the–mill. The acting is good, which I require of any show I'm going to watch for more than, say, one episode. I have very little patience for time–wasters, okay? 1. The Walking Dead – 2010 – Present and On Into The Future – This is the only one on my list that is a zombie flick, because that's not exactly my thing, to be honest. The Walking Dead is full of powerful acting, society fallen, rebuilt, broken and twisted in darkness, kids, marriage, cheating, power plays, abuse, overcoming, strength in numbers, honor, courage, and tons more. • 33. Film Analysis: Night Of The Living Dead The genre I picked to match up with Primitive, Classic, Revisionist, and Parodic is horror. I love horror so the movies that I have picked would match up with all 4 of them and I also like to note that 3 out of the 4 movies I have picked are made by George Romero. For Primitive I choose the movie is Nosferafu because at that time and from what I learn it I concluded that because of that movie it gave the start of that dark eerie feeling in horror films which are used today. For Classic I choose Night of the living dead (1968 version), it was one of Romero's top films that pushed him to be the famous producer he is today. Revisionist would be dawn of the dead 1978 vs 2004 remake; I think there are a lot of differences but also similarities between the 2 movies. Parodic would be Shaun of ... Not at all like numerous other contemporary blood and gore movies, Night of the Living Dead was shot in high contrast and is outstanding for its shocking, unsettling authenticity which looks like the Vietnam footage that circulated each night on television. Alongside the film's grainy tasteful, regular lighting, hand–held shooting, and its utilization of characteristic areas, these irregular methods "gave [Romero's] gorefest the look and feel of a doc." As indicated by Romero, the film's monochromatic cinematography was expressly used to give Night of the Living Dead a valid feeling, since "In those days the news was in highly contrasting. It was a great deal more reasonable in those days". Indeed, even the dialect utilized as a part of the film is like the one connected with Vietnam; e.g. at the point when a group is out to slaughter zombies close to the end of the film, a transmission inside Night of the Living Dead alludes to their main goal as "Hunt and annihilate", which was an infamous Vietnam War military procedure. He is himself a novelist, with several books at the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list. Yet, still some of the scholars merely view this genre as points of departure for critics and argument (Reider 2010, p.205). Regardless of the criticisms and argument from the scholarly sector, an important consideration is the extent to which science fiction genre could bring about future possibilities to the current state of the world. If we, the society as a whole could uphold this futuristic vision, science fiction would be generally recognised as a valuable genre in all disciplinary fields. This perception has now been challenged, and depicts that fantasy dramatic technology has in fact turned into realism. Moreover, science fiction opens space for embedding fantasy features to address contemporary ecological issues. At the current ecology state, the present irresponsible human action towards the natural environment could significantly impact the future generations. This concept is presented in the movie of Avatar (2009), whereby the military and business corporation are so much capitalist ideology driven. The main motive is to exploit natural resources for economic reasons. Specifically, the director of Avatar aims to convey a strong theme regarding our current relationship with the environment, and hoping that future technologies could switch its priority to natural environment protection rather mainly focusing on capitalism. This point of perspective is indeed reflected in a famous novelist Toni Morrison who writes in her novel that "We never shape the world. The world shapes us" (2008, p.83). Essay on Western Movies Since 1960 A NOT–SO–ACCURATE prophet once wrote, "As recently as 1972, there were a tremendous number of quality Westerns being made . . . and since there seems to be a ten–year cycle in Western movie making, I'd say we'll see more in about 1982." 1 In 1982 only two Westerns were released, and neither was exactly a major success. Barbarosa, starring Willie Nelson, drew some respectable reviews–and some very damaging ones–but nobody went to see the film. For all subsequent generations, then, the Western has to be rediscovered, like some store of ancient literature one studies in school. Reviewing the last twenty–five years of the Western, 1960–1985, is salutary for both aficionados and novices. The sixties began with a great film done in the sparest, most austere classical manner, Budd Boetticher's Comanche Station (1960). The last of the Renown cycle of seven films that Boetticher made with Randolph Scott, Comanche Station reduces the elements of the journey Western to create one of its purest expressions ever. Scott is an aging knight, a man "always alone in Comanche country," who, reminiscent of John Wayne's searcher, hunts endlessly for his wife, taken ten years previously by the Comanches. He buys a woman out of captivity–not his wife, of course, whom he will never find–and escorts her back to her husband. The journey pits him against a charming, evil adversary (Claude Akins), and the trip becomes the occasion for a moral dialectic of the kind for which the Western seems the perfect vehicle. In the end the villain adopts Scott's code, dying honorably, and Scott delivers the wife to her husband. He turns out to be a blind man, a fact that surprises and pleases because all through the film we have worried, along with Scott, about what kind of man would leave such a woman to another's care. Fiction 1950-1963 Rob Lapham Analysis Fiction 1950 – 1963 Some people argue that, a step forward may bring great success by altering old ideas, such as different means of literature, that have been accepted as a common norm for many decades. Furthermore, advancements through new and diverse ideas may shape the world of literature and writing on a global scale. In the article, "Fiction 1950 – 1963," by Rob Latham, it is evident that even when popular trends become overthrown by new styles and ideas; it may still bring success and a curious audience to a new period of the science fiction genre. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Following the downfall of the pulp genre in the late 1950's, it has sprouted a new heritage of science fiction which would be labeled as "mainstream literature," and would also later make its way to classrooms as legitimate objects of study. Rather than catering to magazine editors who demanded specific ideological or accurate certainty, authors could begin to imagine themselves as "independent professionals with their own unique artistic visions." (Latham, 3). In other words, Latham claims that the authors who were icons in the pulp genre had fled and had their places "taken by competent but largely second–rank talents," (Latham, 9) who bring new ideas to the table. Despite the rapid change, the New Wave movement presented "new literary techniques and modes of expression." (Ashley, Mike. Transformations. p251–252). The explosion of magazine markets and the constant pressure for material to fill them made authors less cautious in their choices of what they chose fill the market with. This inevitably opened up many doors for new genres, sparking creativity and influence across the market. As Paul Boyer comments, "the status of the genre rose." (Boyer 1985: 257–8, 8). Science Fiction serves as a speculative fiction based on the composer's concerns towards modern society as referenced through William Gibson's statement "It's a way of trying to come to terms with the awe and terror inspired in me by the world in which we live". The fundamental values of morality and humanity have been replaced by greed and human kind's obsession to play the role of God through science and technology. This is demonstrated through Gibson's Neuromancer where the composer reflects Science Fiction conventions within his composition. Gibson explores the subgenre 'cyberpunk' in examining the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Everything within this world is manufactured and lacks the sensory experience of things in the natural world. The use of onomatopoeia "She'd reached out and touched this, her artificial nails clicking against the Lexan sandwich protecting the broken glass", emphasises the absence of sensory experience towards natural elements due to the reliability towards artificiality. The absence of nature and artificiality suggests that society has ruined, damaged and completely destroyed natural resources. This is demonstrated in the visual imagery "The sky above the port was the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel", where technology plays an essential role within Neuromancer society, that they neglect natural elements. The world has now turned to medical intervention, technology and Science to preserve life through artificial means. Gibson assesses the use of technology within society, setting limitation of the extent of reliability towards science and technology, ensuring that it doesn't intervene with morals and ethics. The people in this society are fixated on extending their lives through a medical intervention such as the replacement of limbs. This obsession is best represented in the characterisation of Julius Deane, "Julius Deane was one hundred and thirty–five years old, his metabolism assiduously warped by a weekly fortune in serums and hormones... genetic surgeons reset the code of his DNA". Greed for money has replaced God, ethics and natural order. Attaining and preserving status and wealth has become their priority/ 'God' and they are willing to do anything illegal to acquire it. In this society everyone follows the same way of living to survive, without care for others or for a higher being. This leads to an absence of a real connection between nature and people. Comparison Between The Simpsons and Futurama Essay Comparison Between The Simpsons and Futurama The word genre can be used to describe several things such as books, films and television programmes. It means the theme of the book, e.t.c. and in the case of a film or programme means either horror, thriller, comedy, romantic. It is important that a programme or film makes clear what genre it is. For example, a horror should make you cower in fear and a thriller should keep you on the edge of your seat. In the case of a comedy, which I have chosen to compare, it must make you cry with laughter. What genre a piece of media is, also helps you to choose the things that you like. I have chosen to compare two cartoon comedies, The Simpsons and Futurama. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This makes the audience think that the boy is often in trouble. It is also introducing one of the main characters. The school bell then rings, so the boy rushes out and jumps onto his skateboard. This gives you the impression that he is a typical American boy who hates school and likes video games and skateboarding, e.t.c… The camera then cuts to a man who is wearing safety gloves and handling chemicals, which indicates he is working. A whistle then blows, and the mans face lights up as he exits to the left. The eagerness he expresses to leave, indicates he is related somehow to the previous boy, as he was also keen to exit and did not like working. Next, it shows a supermarket, with a mother doing her groceries. You also see the baby crawling along the belt where the food is placed. This scene indicates that the woman is a busy housewife, who looks after her children, and there is also a hint of comedy as the shop assistant "scans" the baby. Now, the audience has been introduced to two more of the main characters. After that, it changes to a shot of the school band. They start off by playing together but one girl starts to play her own, fabulous tune on the saxophone. This phenomenon, known broadly as 'Nordic Noir,' is characterised by bleak, gothic landscapes, and obsessive and socially isolated protagonists who push themselves to solve the cases no one else seems to be able to solve. This chapter will illustrate how Nordic Noir deploys the film noir narrative tropes, and how it reimagined its heroes and heroines. With themes of gender politics and its role in creating representation and imagination, I will discuss how film noir deploys its depictions of gender and how it is constructed for contemporary television that embodies feminism. Nordic Noir is a fairly recent phenomenon and travels outside of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are women in classic film noir with a similar defiant attitude, to whom the male hero often experiences a sexual attraction: the femme fatale. These women are studied as symbols of 'peculiar' power: carrying guns, smoking cigarettes, and going after what they want, similar to the men in these narratives (Gledhill, 1998, p. 24). The femme fatales are mysterious, ambiguous and most significantly: deadly. These women and their power are however mainly defined by their sexuality and the men often still hold the voice of authority – mainly through voice overs and flashbacks (Gledhill, 1998, p. 24). They are both desirable and dangerous to men (Kaplan, 1998, p. 16). The film noir's femme fatale has for a long time served as a record for anxieties about female sexuality and power, which will be discussed more deeply later in this chapter. The femme fatale fights against the male domination and often ends op losing her life or freedom. "The resistance of these femme fatales are always fatal, if not to herself, it will be to the men who fall for her" (Wager, 2005, p. 4). With the dangers that her sexual performance causes, the classic genre exposed the limitations of a female heroine. It suggests that terrible things would happen if men let these sexual women distract them from their quest, and that the power that these particular women hold, is profoundly dangerous. The sex and gender issues that derive from the femme fatale's presence supposedly trigger the inevitable demise of herself and the hero, but it is nonetheless important to notice that these early film noirs offered audiences a female character that, although destructive, is not weak, but ... It has characteristic features that are known to and recognised by the audiences because the same formula is reproduced many times. Genre is a French word meaning that refers to types or categories of media products. Soap operas, situation comedies, police series, quiz shows and news programmes are just some of the genres to be found in television. Genres are identified by the particular conventions they use which are recognised through regular contact. Conventions are any elements which are repeated in such a way that they become familiar, predictable and associated in their use with a particular genre. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Black or female newsreaders, for example, have been appearing more frequently in recent years therefore representing equality in society. However if generic conventions are simply repeated over and over the films made could be dull and too predictable. The filmmaker relies upon conventions but also mixes them with his or her own version and ideas in order to produce a successfully constructed form of genre. Nearly all stories in any genre are about situations which are disrupted by a problem for e.g., a peaceful village is wrecked by robbers and one of the children is taken hostage, the villages find try to find ways of getting the child back the 'good guy' is used to help the narrative along and therefore resolves the problem. The purpose of the story provides tension for the audience, as on the other hand the audience wish the problem to be solved but on the other hand the audience want the story to continue in order to maintain the pleasure. Narratives have to operate strategies for both moving towards a solution and yet simultaneously putting it off by complaints. Genres are popular because they deal with universal dilemmas and appeal to universal needs. For example, the dilemmas could be the hero or heroine fighting to clear his or her name; good finally overcoming evil. Genres are entertaining in their own ways ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 105. Television : The Sitcom Genre Sitcoms have been one of the most popular and influential television genres for years on end. From some of the oldies like I Love Lucy to some of the more recent ones like New Girl , this genre succeeds in appealing to all people through eye catching drama, witty comedy, and lighthearted romance. Almost all viewers are guilty of singing their favorite theme songs or throwing out some popular catchphrases from some of their beloved characters on the show. The television show Friends, which aired in 1994, is still one of the most watched sitcoms in history. Even though the show ended in 2004, reruns still play on T.V and Netflix has even added the show to its database because of its undying popularity. Even a bit older than Friends, Full House aired its first episode in 1987 and its last in 1995. This shows popularity and influence prompted a continuation of the show, Fuller House, that is currently in production more than twenty years later. Both sitcoms of Friends and Full House demonstrate how the sitcom genre, along with the sub–genres associated with it has had and continues to have a tremendous influence on pop culture. One of the reasons why sitcoms influence pop culture is because viewers incorporate aspects of the show into their personal lives. Most Friends fans can admit to incorporating elements from the show into their lives through either quotes, mannerisms, or styles. In fact, Friends has influenced several parts of society as a whole. True crime is a nonfiction literary and film genre that follows the events of a true crime. In the past decade, a record number of viewers have tuned into a number of streaming and podcast websites such as Netflix, and Itunes, allowing a light to be shone on the flaws within the justice system, and allow those who have been wrongly convicted to tell their story. Essay On Cyberpunk While science fiction was once primarily "about science," it has since evolved into a far–reaching field that encompasses a variety of subgenres. ⦁ cyberpunk: The cyberpunk genre emerged in the early 1980s; combining cybernetics and punk, the term was coined by author Bruce Bethke for his 1980 short story Cyberpunk. The time frame is usually near–future and the settings are often dystopian in nature and characterized by misery. Common themes in cyberpunk include advances in information technology and especially the Internet, visually abstracted as cyberspace and artificial intelligence. ⦁ Time travel: Time travel stories have antecedents in the 18th and 19th centuries. Time travel continues to be a popular subject in modern science fiction, in print, movies, and television episodes of Stargate SG1 and the BBC television series Doctor Who. ⦁ Alternative history : Alternative history stories are based on the premise that historical events might have turned out differently. Essay about Mittell’s Television Genre Theory and Louie Originally published in Cinema Journal 40, No. 3, Spring 2001, Jason Mittell's "A Cultural Approach to Television Genre Theory" conceives of television genre as a cultural category rather than merely a textual component. In the decade since the original publishing of the article, television has evolved out of the multi–channel era and into the post–network era. In this new television landscape, genres are no longer a fixed entity1, and there is great academic potential in the in the study of television genres. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, this concept of genre will be applied to the development of the central questions in my final project. LOUIE: A GENERIC DISCOURSE Mittell suggests that genre studies should negotiate between specificity and generality, and offers the following as an approach: "The second way would be to start with a specific media case study and analyze how genre processes operate within this specific instance. Such projects might isolate a variety of starting points–an industrial formation, audience practices, a textual instance, a policy decision, or a moment in social history. We may start with a textual case to motivate our study, but we must still examine how genres transcend textual boundaries and operate within audience and industry practices as well.3" Also, according to the article, "we should focus on the breadth of discursive enunciations around any given instance, mapping out as many articulations of genre as possible and situating them within larger cultural contexts and relations of power.4" So, any generic discourse must begin with a full understanding of the context of a particular text–in this case, Louie. Tootsie is a classic example of a comedy with its exaggerated situations and witty dialogue. A Christmas Carol, originally written in 1843 by Charles Dickens, takes place in Victorian London where a greedy, negative Scrooge learns that compassion and giving are more important in life. Over the years, numerous adaptations of this classic story have been developed. One of these versions is the dramatized version by Frederick Gaines. Another version is the 1984 television–movie directed by Roger O. Hirson. These two versions of A Christmas Carol share similarities, however many differences appear while delivering the theme of family and the importance of giving. The drama and the movie may still have differences in genres but have the main similarity of showing that Scrooge changed. Scrooge changes from being a rude and greedy man to one that cares for the people around him. But to get to his full potential he has to take it step by step. The spirit's help him do this. In scene 3 of The Christmas Carol The spirit of Christmas past shows scrooge different moments of his past to show how he acted towards people and how it affected his future. Scrooge begins to change when he sees Fezziwig, his old mentor. In scene three of the drama it says, " I should like to be able to say a word or two to my clerk just now, that's all." At its best science fiction provides the most supple and the most popular means of exploring diversity and difference; it opens up new possibilities; it makes us think." Today we'll be exploring that difference as it's represented within the very genre itself, mutating from its origins in Swift's Gulliver's Travels, to become Scott's Blade Runner, and the virtual reality of Gibson's Neuromancer. Blade Runner's L.A. 2019 sets the scene, a sprawl of urban spires amidst fiery miasma presenting our nightmarish future in an aerial shot. Our anti–hero is Deckard, a bureaucratic detective confronting the world in monochrome, impassive as he methodically "retires" replicants. Riddley Scott's euphemism sparks immediate discomfort, estranging us as we witness the progressive humanisation of replicants throughout the film, in Rachel's tears and Roy Batty's breakdown beside the lifeless Pris. Machines become more deserving of our empathy, whereas Deckard, a seemingly flat character is simply there to "do his job." Blade Runner's "Voight–Kampff test" is the quintessential exploration of Roberts' "diversity and difference" [or lack of], assisting in the testing of individuals to discover potential artificiality. However, Scott's mise en scene establishes the apparatus as solely measuring bodily functions such as heart rate and eye movement in response to emotionally provocative questions. Thus, by measuring the physical to scrutinise the human, Scott suggests replicants, though imitations of humans are virtually indiscernible in regard to emotive response. Furthermore, emotive response being product of the human condition, "opens up new possibilities" of technological adoption of human individuality. Scott's Rachel, and Roy Batty have become Tyrell's vision – "more human than human" and arguably more so than our traditional hero.
