 Geometric design of highways deals with the dimensions and layout of
visible features of the highway.
 The features normally considered are the cross section elements,sight
distance consideration,horizonal curvature,gradients,and intersection.
Horizontal Alignment:
 Horizontal alignment of a road defines its location and orientation in plan-
view. It comprises three geometric elements, including tangents (straight
sections), circular curves and transition spirals between tangents and
curves.
Vertical Alignment:
 The vertical alignment (or roadway profile) is the longitudinal section of
the road, comprising such geometric elements as crest and sag curves, and
the gradients (straight grade lines) connecting them.

Cross Section:
 The road cross section shows the position and number of vehicle and
bicycle lanes and sidewalks along with their cross slopes; shoulders,
drainage ditches, etc.
Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D:
 AutoCAD Civil 3D is a civil engineering design and documentation tool
developed by Autodesk.
 It is used for modeling, analysis and design of a variety of civil
infrastructure project types, including roads and highways, land
development, rail, airports, and water.

Autodesk Infraworks software:
 InfraWorks is civil infrastructure conceptual design software that lets
professionals model, analyze, and visualize their design concepts within a
real-world context of the built and natural environment,improving decision
making and project outcomes.
What you can do with Infraworks:
 Generate more accurate context models.Create clean terrain
surfaces,capture existing conditions like roads and bridges,and extract
linear features from point clouds.

 When performed manually, geometric design is very cumbersome, time-
consuming and highly susceptible to very costly errors. Current trends are
geared towards the use of computer programs for roadway geometry
design. The programs offer amazing precision and save lots of time and
effort.
 Therefore our research is to use Autodesk Infraworks and AutoCAD Civil
3D softwares for geometric design of road and perform it easily from office
and propose the best possible route for the road.

 Many researchers have studied and worked on the geometric design of
roads,and mainly they have used AutoCAD Civil 3D.In our project we are
going to use Autodesk Infraworks software as well for the geometric
design of road,and then compare the results achieved from both softwares.
 The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Works (FMW) Highway Manual puts it,
“geometric design focuses on the specific measures that provide for
efficient and appropriate operation of the road, as well as provide for all the
specific details that make roads safe and compatible with social and
environmental circumstances surrounding the road”.

 Golakati (2015) carried out study by considering a geometric feature of a
road such as horizontal radius, super elevation, K-value, visibility, etc. and
made a regression analysis of the study and concluded that the geometric
features have to be given more important while designing a road.
 Vayalamkuzhi and Amirthalingam (2016) studied the influence of
geometric design characteristics on safety under heterogeneous traffic flow.
It was found that operating speed, access point, median opening and
horizontal curvatures are identified as the significant factors influencing
road crashes in a divided highway under heterogeneous traffic using the
same carriageway.

 Current trends are geared towards the use of very sophisticated computer
programs for roadway geometry design that offer amazing precision and
save lots of time and effort.
 Autodesk summarizes the importance of specialized road design software
saying the tools help civil engineering professionals working on
transportation projects to: explore preliminary design options and optimize
project performance; determine optimal horizontal and vertical roadway
geometry that are constrained by design criteria; engineer roadway
geometry in the context of the existing environment more efficiently and
effectively. The tools also enable engineers to work with a more realistic
model of what truly exists at the project site thereby affording engineers
the opportunity to consider safety requirements earlier in project
development.

 Ananya and Sahimol put it, these computer applications can produce
amazing visual graphics that enable the design engineer to view the road on
screen from the perspective of the driver. They further state that “without
the use of three-dimensional modeling, highway planning experiences a
significant difficulty.
 Shah and Shinkar (2016) carried out planning and design of proposed
bypass road used civil 3D and carried out a capacity analysis by projection
traffic volume data for 15 years and concluded that the high design
precision and saving in time were achieved by using Autodesk Civil 3D.

 To perform geometric design of the road easily from office using softwares
without going to the site and performing tough surveys.
 To do the geometric design in short time and save time and economy.
 To find out the best possible proposed route for the road construction by
checking for different possibilities of design using Infraworks software.
 To compare the results of Autodesk Infraworks software with that of
AutoCAD Civil 3D.

  • 4.  Geometric design of highways deals with the dimensions and layout of visible features of the highway.  The features normally considered are the cross section elements,sight distance consideration,horizonal curvature,gradients,and intersection. Horizontal Alignment:  Horizontal alignment of a road defines its location and orientation in plan- view. It comprises three geometric elements, including tangents (straight sections), circular curves and transition spirals between tangents and curves. Vertical Alignment:  The vertical alignment (or roadway profile) is the longitudinal section of the road, comprising such geometric elements as crest and sag curves, and the gradients (straight grade lines) connecting them. Cross Section:  The road cross section shows the position and number of vehicle and bicycle lanes and sidewalks along with their cross slopes; shoulders, drainage ditches, etc. Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D:  AutoCAD Civil 3D is a civil engineering design and documentation tool developed by Autodesk.  It is used for modeling, analysis and design of a variety of civil infrastructure project types, including roads and highways, land development, rail, airports, and water.   • 12.  When performed manually, geometric design is very cumbersome, time- consuming and highly susceptible to very costly errors. Current trends are geared towards the use of computer programs for roadway geometry design. The programs offer amazing precision and save lots of time and effort.  Therefore our research is to use Autodesk Infraworks and AutoCAD Civil 3D softwares for geometric design of road and perform it easily from office and propose the best possible route for the road.   • 13.  Many researchers have studied and worked on the geometric design of roads,and mainly they have used AutoCAD Civil 3D.In our project we are going to use Autodesk Infraworks software as well for the geometric design of road,and then compare the results achieved from both softwares.  The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Works (FMW) Highway Manual puts it, “geometric design focuses on the specific measures that provide for efficient and appropriate operation of the road, as well as provide for all the specific details that make roads safe and compatible with social and environmental circumstances surrounding the road”.   • 14.  Golakati (2015) carried out study by considering a geometric feature of a road such as horizontal radius, super elevation, K-value, visibility, etc. and made a regression analysis of the study and concluded that the geometric features have to be given more important while designing a road.  Vayalamkuzhi and Amirthalingam (2016) studied the influence of geometric design characteristics on safety under heterogeneous traffic flow. It was found that operating speed, access point, median opening and horizontal curvatures are identified as the significant factors influencing road crashes in a divided highway under heterogeneous traffic using the same carriageway.   • 15.  Current trends are geared towards the use of very sophisticated computer programs for roadway geometry design that offer amazing precision and save lots of time and effort.  Autodesk summarizes the importance of specialized road design software saying the tools help civil engineering professionals working on transportation projects to: explore preliminary design options and optimize project performance; determine optimal horizontal and vertical roadway geometry that are constrained by design criteria; engineer roadway geometry in the context of the existing environment more efficiently and effectively. The tools also enable engineers to work with a more realistic model of what truly exists at the project site thereby affording engineers the opportunity to consider safety requirements earlier in project development.   • 16.  Ananya and Sahimol put it, these computer applications can produce amazing visual graphics that enable the design engineer to view the road on screen from the perspective of the driver. They further state that “without the use of three-dimensional modeling, highway planning experiences a significant difficulty.  Shah and Shinkar (2016) carried out planning and design of proposed bypass road used civil 3D and carried out a capacity analysis by projection traffic volume data for 15 years and concluded that the high design precision and saving in time were achieved by using Autodesk Civil 3D.   • 17.  To perform geometric design of the road easily from office using softwares without going to the site and performing tough surveys.  To do the geometric design in short time and save time and economy.  To find out the best possible proposed route for the road construction by checking for different possibilities of design using Infraworks software.  To compare the results of Autodesk Infraworks software with that of AutoCAD Civil 3D.
