The Nature Of Men In The Great Gatsby
Why do some people think that all men are the same? Just because some guys aren't faithful and considerate doesn't mean they're all that way. F.
Scott Fitzgerald does a great way of explaining this in the 1925 love novel, The Great Gatsby. The wives of two men in this book will become the
reason why the men are the way that they are. These men are George Wilson and Tom Buchanan. Tom is married to Daisy Buchanan but she will
go behind his back with Gatsby. Tom will follow with the same actions as Daisy but with George's wife. George Wilson is married to Myrtle
Wilson who will go behind his back with Tom Buchanan. George will remain a good man to his wife throughout the book. These two men are
clearly very different. Fitzgerald is explaining the two sides of man by showing the difference between faithful and unfaithful and the different
ways that the nature of man expresses anger. Fitzgerald uses George to show the faithful and compliant side of man but can get angry very fast.
When Nick and Tom go to George's garage, George's wife ignores him in total except to ask him to get a chair. His response is "Oh sure," without
hesitation (Fitzgerald 26). This shows how he is complaint and how faithful he is. He doesn't say anything of how his wife walks right past him like
he's invisible and he does what she asks with no thought. George is also a strong believer in God and the only character who is. When Michaelis and
George are talking about why Myrtle ran into the street, George

Of Mice and Men and the Great Depression
The 1930s in American history was an interesting period that merges strife with everlasting hope. John Steinbeck's literature takes a snapshot of this
time with realistic circumstances appropriate for the time. Of Mice and Men reflects the Great Depression Era by presenting the storyline in the
agricultural setting of 1930s California, describing the hardships of migrant field workers, and mentioning the dreams and goals of various characters.
The United States felt the reverberating effects of their failing economy during the 1930s. The decade of the 1920s was a period of a newfound
"freedom" in which urban populations discovered leisurely activities, women proved their power and equal rights with the emergence of flappers, and

Curley feels a sense of authority simply by being the field boss's son. However, he fears the workers that were larger and stronger than him.
"Curley's like a lot of little guys. He hates big guys...Kind of like he's mad at 'em because he ain't a big guy" (Steinbeck 26). This explains the
tension between Lennie and Curley that eventually swelled into a fight between them. Slim is an exception to the leading workers on the ranch;
unlike the others, he is understanding and merciful, as in when he let Lennie carry his dog's puppies and when his hands were shaking while Candy's
dog was put down by another worker. He has a good reputation among the workers because "Slim's opinions were law" (Steinbeck 45). The respect he
received and his easygoing nature allows George to befriend him at the end of the novel. (Hearle) (Shillinglaw) (Shindo) (Steinbeck) During the Great
Depression, survival was mandatory in order to get through the hardships at the time. Because of the frequent movement between each job and the
fact that migrant workers had no families or wives to care for, there was a lack of community and family within each ranch. Therefore, the mentality
of "every man for himself" was set in the mind of every migrant worker. George's and Lennie's companionship is looked as unusual by the other
workers since most traveled alone, especially since Lennie and George are complete opposites both physically and mentally. When questioned why they

Compare And Contrast The Great Gatsby And Of Mice And Men
Everyone has a dream that they want to achieve. The goal in life is to find something valuable to achieve. Many people immigrated to America for
a second chance in life. The American dream is a goal someone wants to achieve in America. F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and John
Steinbeck Of Mice and Men are two books that are prime examples of the American dream. The Great Gatsby is a story about a guy named Nick
from the Midwest moving to New York for a job in the stock market. He finds many friends along the way, including Gatsby. Nick lived next door to
Gatsby's mansion. Gatsby used this mansion to try to marry a girl he loved named Daisy. In the end, Gatsby did not get married to Daisy. Of Mice and
Men takes place during the great depression, which makes it hard for people to get work and earn money. The story is about two men in California
who have a dream of having their own ranch. George and Lennie get a job at a ranch where they buck barley. They made friends with an old man
named Candy, who wanted to help them buy a ranch house. Lennie had a mental disorder, which makes it hard for him to understand. He
accidentally killed a lady because of mental disorder. In the end, Lennie was shot by George and he was not able to live on his own ranch. These two
books are similar because characters from both books want to achieve their American dream. Although they did have their American dream, it was
difficult for them to achieve it. F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck

Essay on The Great Gatsby and The Hollow Men
The Great Gatsby has been one of the classic novels of the twentieth century. It creates a unique society that makes the story such a masterpiece.
Another magnificent work that relates to The Great Gatsby is T.S. Eliot's 'The Hollow Man.'; The lines in the poem portray the story so vividly that it
should have been an epigraph for the novel. The poem's references to hollow and stuffed men, can describe different characters in The Great Gatsby.
The hollowness of men represents ruthless barbarians with no respect for humans and no understanding of love. However, the stuffed men seem to be
educated, wealthy, and respectful. The differences in these types of men can be seen through the events of the novel. Another aspect of the poem that...

However, she is also revolting and doesn't understand the concept of love. At one point in the novel she gets frustrated and says to Jay 'Oh you want
too much, I love you now, isn't that enough?(139)'; This shows the emptiness in her heart and the depression of her life. Daisy really has a low
self–esteem and even with her possessions, she is still a disheartened lady with no motive in her life. In addition, Daisy's hollow character eventually
leads to her mental break–down and ultimately conveys her love to Tom. This occurs when she runs over Myrtle and kills her without even looking
back. Daisy then destroys Jay's love and never acknowledges his death.
Another similarity between the works is the idea of the stuffed men mentioned in the poem. There are two characters in the novel that carry this trait.
Jay Gatsby's classy demeanor and restrained behavior show what good quality he is made of. Another trait he carries is his love for others such as
Daisy and Nick. Even though he loves them as stepping stones to reach his goals, he has the decency to respect their goals in life. His persona and
character is best summed up by Nick in the beginning of the novel. He stated: ' There was something gorgeous about him that heightened the
sensitivities to the promises of life.(6)'; Another stuffed character is George Wilson. Even though he committed suicide and had a depressed life, he still

The Great Depression Isolation In Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
The Great Depression isolation " A guy needs somebody– to be near him." He whined, " A guy goes nuts if he ain 't got nobody. Don't make no
difference who the guy is, long's he's with you" (Steinbeck 72). In the 1930s through the Great Depression, many people struggled to survive. They
often became poor and fought with financial aid along with isolation. In the story "Of Mice And Men", Steinbeck has many of the characters
experience a form of isolation. Whether it is power, segregation, or discrimination. However the characters (Candy, Curley's wife and Crooks)
experience something else. Candy experiences ageism for his old age and lack of use. Curley's wife is exposed to sexism, she is not useful to the

In fact, after overhearing the plans of George and Lennie 's dream farm, candy confides in george that he " ... ain 't much good with only one hand"
(59) and "he won 't have no place to go..." (61). Pleading to be included in their dream, candy continued his attempts to convince George: " I'd
make a will an' leave my share to you guys in case I kick off, 'cause I ain't got no relatives nor nothing" (59). Understanding just how important
security is to his own future, Candy hopes he can tempt George with his life's savings and seal the deal when he mentions he had no living
relatives to either help him or benefit from his death. Scared and embarrassed, Candy never comes straight out and admits how ageism has affected
him, but he does express his feelings of fear and his desire to feel like he belongs when he comments to George, "They'll can me purty soon. Just as
soon as I can't swamp out no bunkhouses..." (60). Without any family or friends, without a job or any money, Candy latches on to the idea of owning
land together: " And' it'd be our own an' nobody could can us" (58). Unfortunately, since Candy is much older than the other ranch workers, he often
feel left out and lonely amongst a group of young, healthy men. Despite his insecurities, Candy still wants to contribute to something to society to help
provide him with a sense of purpose and to help him feel like someone still needs him. In chapter two, Steinbeck introduces a young woman who is

Great Depression In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
The drama of Mice and Men takes place in a rural time period set in the years of the Great Depression. Lennie and George were two men going from
farm to farm, town to town looking for work. The two find themselves in Salinas Valley, California when a tragic accident puts them on the run and
George to protect his best friend and partner in crime. Lennie has a mental disorder that makes him slower than others. He loves small, fluffy, soft
animals. He often keeps a small mouse in his pocket to comfort him, but his disorder makes him unaware of his strength, Lennie kills the mice he
keeps. Lennie just wants to touch and comfort these animals, but always hurts them. Lennie and George were at a near–by town when they meet Curly,
an old handyman and farmer. Curley's wife flirts with the two men. But George warns Lennie to stay away, sensing that his wife could be looking to

George knows that when the other men find out what Lennie did, they would kill him. George helps and hides Lennie to protect him. The two
men were sitting together talking and George knew exactly what he had to do. He had to step up and be a man. Lennie asks George if they were
going to own a farm with a lot of animals still, and wanted to talk about their future. George stands behind Lennie with a gun. Pointing the barrel to
the back of Lennie's skull. George takes the shot, ending Lennie's suffering and illness, while also getting justice for the young woman Lennie
killed. He told the men of the town what had happened. Only George told the men it was out of self defense from Lennie. George knew the men
would have found Lennie and have gotten justice their way, not his. George honored his best friend by ending it all. The lessons of Mice and Men
were that you have to do what is right and to take responsibility. George did what he had to do, not what he necessarily wanted to

Is There Some Good In The Worst Of Men In Great Expectations
Dickens's Claim Men and women can be in prison for doing terrible things. Although, some inmates are greeted by loved ones with happiness. It
always fascinated me how these men and women could have such loving relationships even though they are locked up for doing a crime. When I see
inmates expressing their love to visitors it really makes me think, "Is there some good in the worst of men?" In the novel Great Expectations by Charles
Dickens, any reader can see Dickens's claim that there is some good in the worst of men. The first example of Dickens's claims is Pip's first
terrifying encounter with his future benefactor. As Pip visits his mother and father he is disrupted by a thundering voice, "'Hold your noise!' cried a
terrible voice, as a man started up from among the graves. 'Keep still, you little devil, or I'll cut your throat'" (Dickens 5). As the convict threatens
Pip's life, it scares Pip for what is to come the unknown man. The convict makes Pip promise to steal food and a file to give for himself. ... Show more

he has to pardon Pip for being an ingrate to his family. Mrs. Joe saying this statement helps the reader understand that in end of her life there was some

The Great Depression is comparable to Lennie and George 's life. I would like
to give a comparison of George Milton and Lennie Small to the Great
Depression. The time that this story took place was during the Great
Depression. John Steinbeck captured the reality of this most difficult time.
During the Great Depression people needed to travel together to share
chores and duties to make a living until something better came along. That is
the way George and Lennie traveled. They traveled together to take care of
each other but George took care of Lennie the most, because he was always
getting in trouble. 'You do bad things and I got to get you out. ' (Of Mice

This sort of ties in with the attitude of the
people during the Great Depression because people were constantly unsettled.
The people in the Great Depression were losing all of the money that they had
worked so hard to earn and save. When the banks closed, they lost
everything. When someone found themselves in great difficulty on a farm or
ranch they had to seek some other opportunity. It was very important to not
let anyone know what had happened where you were previously employed.
In 1929, Herbert Hoover was elected president. Wall Street was
greatly affected by the greatest stock market crash in the history of the United
States of America. This caused everyone and especially the banks to panic.
Everyone was naturally concerned about the safety of their money. They
went to the banks to get what money they could. There was not enough
money for everyone to withdrawal. This was the beginning of the Great
Depression. During this period president Franklin D. Roosevelt was
inaugurated. President Roosevelt said, 'So, first of all, let me assert my firm
belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself––nameless, unreasoning,
unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into
advance. ' (The Great Depression An Eyewitness History p.105). His first
action of presidency was to implement what is known as the New Deal to
help the country to emerge from the Great Depression.

Similarities Between Of Mice And Men And The Great Gatsby
The novels Of Mice and Men and The Great Gatsby are two American classic novels. Though the plots of these two novels may seem entirely
different, they both include the "American dream." The "American dream" consists of having an easy life with a desired social status. Each novel
displays different "parallels" of this concept. The primary and most obvious concept is George, Lennie, and Gatsby's desire for the American
dream. Gatsby grew up in poverty, fell in love with Daisy, and did anything he could to win her heart. This included becoming one of the wealthiest
men in New York. George and Lennie were classified as "hobos" and had a dream of settling down and living off of the "fat of the land." The American

There Are Good Men And Great Men Essay
There are good men and great men. When it comes to choosing leaders, it often seems that the will of the people often will back the man they
perceive to not just be good, but great. Great in what though? Whether the people have a choice of their leader or are forced into living under the
command of their leader, people will more times than not, more willingly summit themselves to the rule of a great man rather than a man who is
simply good or on the other end a tyrant. Cyrus the Great, as portrayed by historian Xenophon in The Education of Cyrus shows perhaps one of the
greatest leaders of the ancient world, especially in the region of the modern day Middle East. Xenophon describes to his reader the renowned and
extremely loved character of Cyrus as both a conqueror and as an emperor. In seeing Cyrus as a military ruler and as a ruler over a vast nation,
Cyrus appears to be the perfect man for modern day, Republican politics. Through the dissection of the character of Cyrus, laid out by Xenophon,
both as a conquer and as an emperor, it becomes evident that Cyrus, if alive today, would prove to be the perfect leader of the people of the free
world. As president, there are two major roles that encompass all other roles that the person who takes the position must be able to balance:
commander–in–chief to the armed forces and leader of the people of the nation. These roles of the president, parallel with the roles that Cyrus played
as both conquer and emperor. In both these

Push Beyond the Limits
Between The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men, there are many different ideas and motifs that are shown throughout the novels. Both books show the
idea that achieving the American Dream can be a difficult task. Characters in both books were on their way to achieving their dreams, but something
happened that caused them to start back at the beginning with nearly nothing.
The hardships that people face during their lifetime help further their personalities, resulting in something amazing. Are the hardships faced in both
books worth the long–term goals stated by the characters?
The Great Gatsby is a book about a man who moves to New York City to achieve his dreams of living lavishly. He meets many different people
including a wealthy person named Jay Gatsby. He realizes that he knows Gatsby from the war in years past. Gatsby tells his story of how he obtained
his wealth to the main character, explaining hardships and difficulties along the way.
Of Mice and Men is a book about two guys who travel together out West, trying to earn a living working on a ranch. They get kicked off of the first
one, resulting in them having to start over once again. The novel tells of their life and how hard it was to be in their position.

To illustrate, George had been talking to Lennie about their dream when he said, "An' live off the fatta the lan'" (Steinbeck 14). George had the
original American Dream, to own land, be his own boss and have someone to share it with. Sadly, all efforts and hopes did not work on account of the
incident between Curley's wife and Lennie. When discovering Curley's wife's death, George knew that his American Dream also died with her. Not to
mention, while being comforted Curley's wife said, "Coulda been in the movies, an' had nice clothes–all them nice clothes like they wear" (Steinbeck

The Great Depression was a very negative event in human history. The economy dropped, lifestyles were being ruined, and on top of that, the Dust
Bowl wiped out crops for farmers and dried up everything. Throughout the novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck emphasizes how the Great
Depression impacted everyone's lives through their imagining of the perfect lifestyle, the bringing together of companions, and the struggle for
survival. Steinbeck uses the characters' dreams of the perfect lifestyle as a way to show how the Great Depression impacted their lives. Most people,
during the Great Depression, fantasized about the perfect lifestyle and how they would live their life with no trouble. Especially Lennie and George,
they had that plan in mind. In the novel, it says that Lennie and George were going to save enough money so they can leave, buy their own land, and
live the perfect life. Owning crops and livestock, not having to work hard labor for little pay, and most important to Lennie . . . tending the rabbits.

The American Dream In The Great Gatsby And Of Mice And Men
Have you ever wanted something extremely bad, but you simply could not afford it? In both of the novels, The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and
Men, we are shown clear examples of this idea on a much larger scale. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is about a man named Gatsby living in
the 1920s whose lifelong dream is to marry a rich girl named Daisy, who is already married. Meanwhile, in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men is about
two ranch workers named George and Lennie. Their dream is to eventually save up enough money to buy a farm during the 1930s and the Great
Depression. Although these books are different in many ways, there is one idea that is present in both books; these characters in each book think a
large amount of money is necessary if one wants to achieve the American dream.
In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby's main dream that is that he wants to eventually be with Daisy forever; and Gatsby wasn't a generic man, so he would
go through whatever he had to just to be with Daisy. Gatsby made Daisy really start to fall in love with him when he had Nick (The main character
in Fitzgerald's novel) invite Daisy over for tea, and then they went to Gatsby's enormous mansion (Fitzgerald PAGE). It became obvious as the story
went on that Gatsby's wealth was the main reason that Daisy was falling in love with him. Inside the mansion Daisy started crying tears of joy when

Scott Fitzgerald had a hollow life and so is the life of rich men. Men like Gatsby. This may have been a fictional story but it is not a fictional reality.
Men strive for pleaser and comfort. They try to use it for fulfillment. Money and fame is a hollow road that leave men hungry. Men lay sleepless
for fear that they will lose it. There is no end game. Gatsby thought that Daisy would fill him. But who or what can fill a space meant for God. Men
are vessels that are needing to be filled. F. Scott Fitzgerald understand or want to believe it. But men are dead and lifeless. Filling ourselves with
acceptance of others or sinful pleasure. We reach for false love but are really looking for God yet we don't know it. It's madness.
Gatsby was a slave to his desire. His desire was to be rich and impress Daisy so that he could live his fantasy. She still was willing to divorce her
husband whom she married for money and pleaser. Not for real love. If only they could have found satisfaction in God. If they would have just left
there money and their fame. They don't want to be with God. Which will be the worst mistake of their lives. No one can be forced to do something
they don't want to. They must have God change them. Gatsby was a fool to follow his lust. He failed. There is no silver lining in this story. Gatsby

Compare Of Mice And Men And The Great Gatsby
Let's say that there is a person who has an important goal that he wants to eventually reach, such as becoming a professional football player. He
goes to all the practices, goes to the gym everyday, and he studies all of the plays that he might do. He puts in tons of work and at the end of
highschool he gets a scholarship to play football in college. So, he is on the team, and on his first day of practice, he has a career ending injury. He
can no longer play football for the rest of his life. How do you think that made him feel? The Great Gatsby is a book about a man, named Nick, who has
a neighbor, called Gatsby, who likes a woman who he knew in the past. Of Mice and Men is a book about two men, named George and Lennie. They
are trying to get a job and enough money to buy some land, so they can "live off the fatta the land" (Fitzgerald 14–15). The Great Gatsby and Of Mice
and Men both show characters that are determined to achieve the american dream. As these characters get closer to achieving the american dream,
things start to go downhill. This shows that no matter how determined someone is to achieve the american dream, they might not be able to achieve
this dream.
In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby spent years trying to achieve his dream, but he made a bad decision and lost his chance. Gatsby met Daisy a couple
years before (Fitzgerald 74). He would hide his social class from her because he was afraid she wouldn't like him. He never forgot her, even when
he went to fight in the war. He has been formulating a plan to get Daisy back. He comes back and got a house across the lake from Daisy, hoping
to be with her some day. He did a lot of bad business to get all of his wealth, but the money wasn't enough. He wanted to be with Daisy. He
eventually gets to meet up with Daisy because of Nick's help, and Gatsby gets closer to being able to live a life with Daisy. One day, everyone
(Tom, Daisy, Gatsby, Nick, and Jordan) is in town, renting a hotel room to deal with the heat. Tom figures out that Daisy and Gatsby have something
going on. Tom gets mad and everyone starts to head home. On the way back, Gatsby lets Daisy drive his car, which was his bad decision (Fitzgerald

The American Dream In The Great Gatsby And Of Mice And Men
The American Dream is the belief that anyone, regardless of race, class, gender, or nationality, can be successful in America if they just work hard
enough. The American Dream gave hope to all Americans that they have a chance to be successful despite their backgrounds. Although the American
Dream inspired many, several people took a more negative view on it. Both F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck criticize the American Dream in their
novels: The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men. In these two novels, Gatsby and Lennie both have dreams they so desperately want to achieve. The
green light on the end of Daisy's dock is symbolic of Gatsby's dream to repeat the past and be reunited with Daisy. On the other hand, Lennie has
the dream to buy a patch of land with George where he can tend the rabbits. Although these dreams may seem harmless, Gatsby and Lennie made
some big mistakes that led things to take a bad turn. By analyzing both Gatsby's and Lennie's dreams, it will become obvious how the American
Dream ultimately fails them. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald introduces the character, Gatsby, to show how The American Dream failed him
so devastatingly. Gatsby had the dream to be reunited with Daisy and repeat the past again. Daisy and Gatsby were once in love in October of 1917.
Daisy was eighteen and Queen Bee of high society, while Gatsby was a young officer who was head–over–heels in love with her. However, Gatsby had

Compare And Contrast The Great Gatsby And Of Mice And Men
F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men are set in two close time periods, but give a different feel to the
setting in each book. In both books, women have a status lower than men. Daisy, Jordan, Myrtle and Curley's wife are seen as inferior, most likely due
to society's view of women during the time periods. In The Great Gatsby and in Of Mice and Men, the American Dream is often put aside, seen through
the actions of women characters.
The idea of the American Dream has been around since America was founded, but until 1933, it was not put into words. In the article American
Faces 1933's Realities, by James Truslow Adams, he defines the American Dream as " ...a vision of a better, deeper, richer life for every individual,
regardless of the position in society which he or she may occupy by the accident of birth" (1). The American Dream does not have to be described as
having copious amounts of wealth. To some, it is only a vision of a better life for themselves and their families.
In the 1920s and 1930s, women may have been able to vote, get a job, and be more independent, but that doesn't mean they wanted to. They earned
lower pay and worked in harsh conditions, in the 1930s. They were also criticized for taking jobs away from the men. Many of the thoughts about
how women should live still carried over from past years. In theory, they may have had more rights, but did not exercise them all (Working Women in
the 1930s).

Effects Of The Great Depression In Of Mice And Men
How does the Great Depression influence the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck? The Great Depression was an acute worldwide economic
depression that lasted from 1929 to 1939. The Great Depression greatly influences Of Mice and Men in many different ways. The Great Depression
is the time period during which Of Mice and Men takes place, it impacts the hope and dreams of the main characters, and it sets the stage for societal
values and issues in the book.
The Great Depression can be seen in the novel Of Mice and Men. The Great Depression is the time period during which the book takes place. The
influence of this time period in the book can be seen with a quote as follows, "Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world.
They got no family. They don't belong no place. They come to a ranch an' work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first

The significance of the era sets the stage for what society is like in the book. What society was like during the Great Depression can be seen with
the following quote from an informational article, "Higher education remained out of reach for most Americans as the nation's universities saw their
student bodies shrink during the first half of the decade. High school attendance increased among males, however. Because the prospects of a young
male getting a job were so incredibly dim, many decided to stay in school longer. However, public spending on education declined sharply, causing
many schools to open understaffed or close due to lack of funds." (ushistory.org 1). As you can see, the Great Depression affected the social climate
of the world. The lack of education during the Great Depression plays a role in the novel. Most of the characters are uneducated and show it through
the way they speak. The Great Depression sets the stage for the novel and what society is

Of Mice And Men : The Era Of The Great Depression
Through the movement of history gender roles of Men and Women have been extremely varied. From the standards, expectations, to the work or home
place there was a difference. Women were looked at as less than a men , the intellectual individual. Being a male was the greatest things they could be
and their masculinity was their greatest pride. In the 1930В’s the era of the Great Depression took presence. The manВ’s role in the depression was
much more refined in this era. Most views of a man in the 1930 's were of a strong, hard working man who supplied the needs of his family. While
the men were at work, women mostly stayed home to take care of the children according to To Kill a Mockingbird research hub. In the novel Of
Mice and Men we can see how an unlikely pair of two men make their journey during the era of the Great Depression trying to make a stake to own
their own land, but unfortunate events take place. As the novel takes action we can see how men exhibiting their masculinity, how they demonstrate
their masculinity, and how women are irrelevant, and only used for pleasure. Masculinity is used as a roles you have to play right. From CurleyВ’'s
history to being a boxer he still was not respected but that what drove him to try to make himself more respectable. His action didn 't quite often work
and did the opposite, he was the laughing stock to the man in the ranch.
As the novel develops it is present how many of the men try to display their masculinity throughout

Gender Roles In 'The Great GatsbyAndOf Mice And Men'
In the early 20th century, feminism was not very common thus women had less value than men in society. Two great examples in english literature that
indirectly talk about this implicitly are The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men.
The Novel The Great Gatsby, is about a man called Nick Carraway, who moves next door to a mysterious rich man called Gatsby. During the book he
finds out about the differences in society and the relationships between people in different social classes. In Of Mice and Men you learn about two
men who travel around and look for jobs in spite of buying their own farm. Throughout the story the reader learns about the differences between
relationships of different and equal gender. People of the same gender (man to man) talk and laugh whereas relationships between different genders
(man to woman) are noticeably contrasting, meaning that nobody talks to the only female person on the ranch.
Both authors develop different female characters, who are not seen as level with man but as inferior to them.
In The Great Gatsby, there are three major female roles who all show a variety of personalities and their importance fluctuates, yet they have a
similarity. All of them have worse qualities than the male characters in the book. Nick describes Daisy, one of the women and his cousin, as "a
coward" and says "you could see that she never intended to do anything at all"(FITZGERALD, 132). In the book she represents a typical image of
"woman" as shy, weak, and sneaky.

Of Mice And Men And The Great Gatsby
The two novels The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men are very similar in many ways. In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby spends his whole life
working towards a dream. He grew up dirt poor, and eventually made himself into a millionaire. However, his entire dream was centered around one
person, a married woman named Daisy Buchanan. Right when he was the closest to achieving his dream, Gatsby was shot and killed for something
he didn't do. In Of Mice and Men, Lennie and George make every decision in life with one thing in mind, their dream of owning their own ranch
someday. Lennie's life revolves around that dream; it is all he thinks about. Lennie even dies while still envisioning how he desperately wanted his life
to turn out. In these two novels,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though Lennie and George are poor, they dream of climbing up the social ladder. They don't want to be millionaires like Gatsby, they just want
a small farm with their own land to tend to and animals to raise. They want to work for themselves and be able to take off work and go to the carnival
whenever they want to. While George wants this dream also, I think that Lennie is the one who needs it the most. Lennie's entire life is centered
around this one dream, and it is all he ever talks about. George tells him the story several times throughout the novel. George and Lennie travel as
migrant workers to earn money to achieve their dream. They too want material things, however their dream is slightly more reasonable. Lennie
tells about wishing to raise chickens and rabbits and tending to their own crops. They want to better themselves from the poor workers they are
now, into comfortable and profitable farmers. Not only does Lennie want these things to live a fulfilling life, he also wants to fit in. Many other
people, like the man he works for, own their own land, and he wants to do the same. In addition to both George and Lennie wanting to fit in with
society, Lennie also wants to fit in with the other men on the ranch. He specifically wants to be accepted and loved by George, who sometimes
makes Lennie feel like a burden. At one point, Lennie offers to leave and go life on his own, but George realizes that he is hurting his feelings, so
he apologizes and they continue on with working to attain their goal. Similarly to The Great Gatsby, George and Lennie are very close to attaining
their goal when it all comes crashing down. Lennie gets himself into trouble and George is forced to make a very difficult decision, whether to shoot
Lennie and let him die peacefully, or let the other men find him first and possibly torture him. George decides to let

The Great Gatsby vs of Mice and Men
The American Dream is an idea that many Americans share and have faith in, but it can be used as a false promise of success. This notion is
explored through the texts The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men written by F.Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck respectively. The Great Gatsby
was first published in 1926. The novel is set in the summer of 1922 and follows the life of Jay Gatsby who tries to get the love of his life back,
Daisy Buchanan, through his wealth and social status. Of Mice and Men follows the lives of George Milton and Lennie Small who are migrant farm
workers. Lennie is mentally incapable but George is there to protect him. They both share a dream of one day owning a farm together. The authors have

This is evident when Tom says 'I'll be damned if I see how you got within a mile of her unless you brought the groceries to the back door. But all
the rest of that's a God damned lie. Daisy loved me when she married me and she loves me now'. Tom's view on marriage is much different from
Gatsby's. Tom sees love as a possession and marriage as a way of owning another person. Gatsby sees marriage as an expression of love. This is
evident when Gatsby responds 'You loved me too?' after Daisy had confessed her love to him. West Egg, East Egg and The Valley of Ashes have
been used to represent the three different types of classes in society during the 1920s. The construction of the setting has been used to show us the
conflict between the people who had old money with the people who had new money and how people with no money were isolated from the high
class and overlooked. The conflicts between the classes show us that the pursuing the American Dream may lead to wealth and prosperity, but it
certainly does not provide happiness among people. The Great Depression was the result of life during the Roaring Twenties. People heavily valued
materialism and hedonism which in–turn made many people try to find a way to gain a large amount of money in a short period of time. As more and
more people were intoxicated with greed and selfishness, they became more careless through their actions and made many mistakes. These mistakes led

Dreaming the Dream in The Great Gatsby, and Of Mice and Men
The American Dream has long been thought the pinnacle idea of American society. The idea that anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, or financial
status, could rise from the depths and become anything they wanted to be with no more than hard work and determination has attracted people from all
around the world. Two writers from America's past, however, have a different opinion on the once
–great American Dream. F. Scott Fitzgerald and John
Steinbeck have given the public their beliefs on the modern Dream through the novels they have written, The Great Gatsby, and Of Mice and Men,
respectively. One novel placed during the Great Depression and the other during the Roaring Twenties both illustrate how their author feels about the

In a different, yet similar way, Steinbeck also uses irony to illustrate the American Dream. He too shows the problems of the Dream with his use of
the literary device. "Before George answered, Candy dropped his head and looked down at the hay. He knew. George said softly, "
– I think I knowed
from the very first. I think I knowed we'd never do her. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would." (Steinbeck, 94)
After so much work and pain, George and Candy realize that their dream has been a lost cause. While kind, Lennie's mistakes have ended their goal of
purchasing their own land and having a better life. George still has a chance of attaining his goal, but it has been severely injured. In the honest efforts
of George, Lennie, and Candy, Steinbeck presents some form of flaw in the American Dream with his use of the brutal irony that is the downfall of the
trio's dream. Both authors have an apparent detestation towards what the American Dream has become in their time, and irony proves to be an
outstanding apparatus to capture their thoughts.
The settings of both novels also help the reader observe the authors' perspective of the faltering American Dream. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck
places the events of his novel in California during the Great Depression; years after the events of Fitzgerald's

Lennie and George end up employed on a ranch and begin to realize that every man is for himself and that nobody is truly happy. They come to

derogatory terms because of her flirtatious personality (Steinbeck 28). She approaches the other men and "stirs up trouble" (77) which in the end
leads to Lennie's death. Being the wife of an arrogant and egocentric man, Curley's wife tries to cure her loneliness by finding solace in other men.
Knowing her future is bleak, Curley's wife risks the dangers of the other men's lives by trying to find someone like her. She lures Lennie into her

The Great Gatsby And Of Mice And Men
As individuals progress in their daily lives and grow older and older, priorities change and new beginnings are created. For most people, they have an
idea in their mind on what they want to accomplish along with how they are going to go about it. The American dream states how any U.S citizen is
able to achieve success in any way they believe is best for them, making it clear that there is no right in accomplishing this task. Overall, everyone is
equal, hard work, determination, and initiatives are all factors played into as they go about their dreams. Furthermore, in the novels, The Great Gatsby
and Of Mice and Men, the authors do a prodigious job representing the many different circumstances of the American dream through the characters and
overall plot of the book.
The Great Gatsby is a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald about many diverse characters who live in a town known as West Egg, however not all of the
characters enjoy themselves here. Throughout the book, individuals like Jay Gatsby make it clear that they have their own goals for themselves.

during the Great Depression for someone to come up with a goal that they believed to be achievable. However, even the best laid out plans were

The majority of migrant workers during this time period could not make relationships last due to the constant moving around for work. The worker's
mental mindset secured them in a never ending trap of working hard and moving often. George explains to Lennie the problem about how they are
traveling from the north to the southwest for a different job due to unexpected circumstances. George clarifies this to Lennie by stating that, "Well–

The Great Gatsby And Of Mice And Men
In the novel 'The Great Gatsby' and 'Of Mice and Men' F Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck respectively explore the complex perspective of the true
outcome of the American Dream. Although set within different eras of American society, the extensive failure of dreams throughout both texts shows
how the American Dream is destined for annihilation despite the intention of hope and happiness. In its original form the American Dream
encapsulated the ideal that 'equality of opportunity is available to any American allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved'. 'The Great

Crooks however dismisses these beliefs by referencing other ranch workers, "hundreds of men", to be exact, who have the same aspirations of owning
their own land but "God damn one of em' ever gets it." The culmination of both texts simply resides that once the potential of the American Dream
becomes a reality it results in the collapse of everyone's dreams and aspirations.
The social hierarchy is influenced by the amount of money one owns which determines whether one can attain their dream. By creating apparent social
classes within 'The Great Gatsby' – old money, new money and no money, Fitzgerald strongly suggests that American society is intensely stigmatised.
Daisy, Tom and Jordan represent the elite social class of society where despite their problems and failures they are always protected and immune by
their wealth. Tom refers to Gatsby as 'Mr Nobody from nowhere" and a "common swindler who would have to steal the ring he put on her finger" as
he boasts about his hereditary wealth compared to the other distinct elite group of society who acquire their wealth through business deals, which are
sometimes corrupt. Although Fitzgerald mainly attacks the rich, by making them look judgemental, superior and selfish, evidently the lower class of
society are vulnerable within American society. This is shown where so many, like Myrtle,

by such events. Unfortunately, ranches and farms were hit especially hard during this time due to drought and uncontrollable dust storms. These

are extremely lucky to find this job, especially for the two of them. Many migrant workers in the Great Depression era did not travel with one
another or find a secure job. Living "offa the fatta the lan' " means to live sustainably off of the land by using its natural resources, growing your own
food, and raising animals. This was most migrant workers dreams too, because they did not have to pay for almost anything except their taxes.
Achieving this dream was just one of the many challenges George, Lennie, and the other migrant workers

A Comparison of "Of Mice and Men" and "The Great Depression An Eyewitness
History"
The Great Depression is comparable to Lennie and George's life. I would like to give a comparison of George Milton and Lennie Small to the Great
Depression. The time that this story took place was during the Great Depression. John Steinbeck captured the reality of this most difficult time.
During the Great Depression people needed to travel together to share chores and duties to make a living until something better came along. That is
the way George and Lennie traveled. They traveled together to take care of each other but George took care of Lennie the most, because he was
always getting in trouble. "You do bad things and I got to get you... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
George would then have to try to get Lennie out of the current predicament. This sort of ties in with the attitude of the people during the Great
Depression because people were constantly unsettled. The people in the Great Depression were losing all of the money that they had worked so hard
to earn and save. When the banks closed, they lost everything. When someone found themselves in great difficulty on a farm or ranch they had to
seek some other opportunity. It was very important to not let anyone know what had happened where you were previously employed. In 1929,
Herbert Hoover was elected president. Wall Street was greatly affected by the greatest stock market crash in the history of the United States of
America. This caused everyone and especially the banks to panic. Everyone was naturally concerned about the safety of their money. They went to the
banks to get what money they could. There was not enough money for everyone to withdrawal. This was the beginning of the Great Depression. During
this period president Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated. President Roosevelt said, "So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing
we have to fear is fear itself––nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." (The Great
Depression An Eyewitness
History p.105). His first action of presidency was to implement what is known as the New Deal to

Differences Between The Great Gatsby And Of Mice And Men
Today, it is more evident than ever that there are deep divisions within modern society along the lines of race, class and gender. These divides are
highlighted by recent protests, riots and movements. These issues are relevant in modern society as well as in two famous stories. Both F. Scott
Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men use character development to make commentary toward these points.
Fitzgerald's novel covers the tumultuous journey of Nick Carraway through the swanky social elite of the 1920's. Steinbeck's text covers the
opposite end of the spectrum, detailing the experiences of George and Lennie, ranchers during the great depression. While also providing a riveting
and captivating plot, these seemingly antithetical tales both develop their respective characters to be normal, everyday people who face difficult
problems because of their class. F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby details the tribulations that come with being immensely rich or extremely
poor. One such example is the original decision by Daisy to bypass Gatsby and instead get married to Tom. Later on in the book, it is revealed that
Daisy was in love with Gatsby and he was in love with her, but they couldn't get married, primarily because they occupy different social strata
(Fitzgerald 151). She instead marries Tom and immediately regrets it. Fitzgerald crafted this situation to make commentary on how money and the need
to be around it, can cause people to cut

The Nature Of Men In The Great Gatsby

  • 1. The Nature Of Men In The Great Gatsby Why do some people think that all men are the same? Just because some guys aren't faithful and considerate doesn't mean they're all that way. F. Scott Fitzgerald does a great way of explaining this in the 1925 love novel, The Great Gatsby. The wives of two men in this book will become the reason why the men are the way that they are. These men are George Wilson and Tom Buchanan. Tom is married to Daisy Buchanan but she will go behind his back with Gatsby. Tom will follow with the same actions as Daisy but with George's wife. George Wilson is married to Myrtle Wilson who will go behind his back with Tom Buchanan. George will remain a good man to his wife throughout the book. These two men are clearly very different. Fitzgerald is explaining the two sides of man by showing the difference between faithful and unfaithful and the different ways that the nature of man expresses anger. Fitzgerald uses George to show the faithful and compliant side of man but can get angry very fast. When Nick and Tom go to George's garage, George's wife ignores him in total except to ask him to get a chair. His response is "Oh sure," without hesitation (Fitzgerald 26). This shows how he is complaint and how faithful he is. He doesn't say anything of how his wife walks right past him like he's invisible and he does what she asks with no thought. George is also a strong believer in God and the only character who is. When Michaelis and George are talking about why Myrtle ran into the street, George ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Of Mice and Men and the Great Depression The 1930s in American history was an interesting period that merges strife with everlasting hope. John Steinbeck's literature takes a snapshot of this time with realistic circumstances appropriate for the time. Of Mice and Men reflects the Great Depression Era by presenting the storyline in the agricultural setting of 1930s California, describing the hardships of migrant field workers, and mentioning the dreams and goals of various characters. The United States felt the reverberating effects of their failing economy during the 1930s. The decade of the 1920s was a period of a newfound "freedom" in which urban populations discovered leisurely activities, women proved their power and equal rights with the emergence of flappers, and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Curley feels a sense of authority simply by being the field boss's son. However, he fears the workers that were larger and stronger than him. "Curley's like a lot of little guys. He hates big guys...Kind of like he's mad at 'em because he ain't a big guy" (Steinbeck 26). This explains the tension between Lennie and Curley that eventually swelled into a fight between them. Slim is an exception to the leading workers on the ranch; unlike the others, he is understanding and merciful, as in when he let Lennie carry his dog's puppies and when his hands were shaking while Candy's dog was put down by another worker. He has a good reputation among the workers because "Slim's opinions were law" (Steinbeck 45). The respect he received and his easygoing nature allows George to befriend him at the end of the novel. (Hearle) (Shillinglaw) (Shindo) (Steinbeck) During the Great Depression, survival was mandatory in order to get through the hardships at the time. Because of the frequent movement between each job and the fact that migrant workers had no families or wives to care for, there was a lack of community and family within each ranch. Therefore, the mentality of "every man for himself" was set in the mind of every migrant worker. George's and Lennie's companionship is looked as unusual by the other workers since most traveled alone, especially since Lennie and George are complete opposites both physically and mentally. When questioned why they travel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Compare And Contrast The Great Gatsby And Of Mice And Men Everyone has a dream that they want to achieve. The goal in life is to find something valuable to achieve. Many people immigrated to America for a second chance in life. The American dream is a goal someone wants to achieve in America. F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and John Steinbeck Of Mice and Men are two books that are prime examples of the American dream. The Great Gatsby is a story about a guy named Nick from the Midwest moving to New York for a job in the stock market. He finds many friends along the way, including Gatsby. Nick lived next door to Gatsby's mansion. Gatsby used this mansion to try to marry a girl he loved named Daisy. In the end, Gatsby did not get married to Daisy. Of Mice and Men takes place during the great depression, which makes it hard for people to get work and earn money. The story is about two men in California who have a dream of having their own ranch. George and Lennie get a job at a ranch where they buck barley. They made friends with an old man named Candy, who wanted to help them buy a ranch house. Lennie had a mental disorder, which makes it hard for him to understand. He accidentally killed a lady because of mental disorder. In the end, Lennie was shot by George and he was not able to live on his own ranch. These two books are similar because characters from both books want to achieve their American dream. Although they did have their American dream, it was difficult for them to achieve it. F. • 4. Essay on The Great Gatsby and The Hollow Men The Great Gatsby has been one of the classic novels of the twentieth century. It creates a unique society that makes the story such a masterpiece. Another magnificent work that relates to The Great Gatsby is T.S. Eliot's 'The Hollow Man.'; The lines in the poem portray the story so vividly that it should have been an epigraph for the novel. The poem's references to hollow and stuffed men, can describe different characters in The Great Gatsby. The hollowness of men represents ruthless barbarians with no respect for humans and no understanding of love. However, the stuffed men seem to be educated, wealthy, and respectful. The differences in these types of men can be seen through the events of the novel. Another aspect of the poem that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, she is also revolting and doesn't understand the concept of love. At one point in the novel she gets frustrated and says to Jay 'Oh you want too much, I love you now, isn't that enough?(139)'; This shows the emptiness in her heart and the depression of her life. Daisy really has a low self–esteem and even with her possessions, she is still a disheartened lady with no motive in her life. In addition, Daisy's hollow character eventually leads to her mental break–down and ultimately conveys her love to Tom. This occurs when she runs over Myrtle and kills her without even looking back. Another trait he carries is his love for others such as Daisy and Nick. Even though he loves them as stepping stones to reach his goals, he has the decency to respect their goals in life. His persona and character is best summed up by Nick in the beginning of the novel. He stated: ' There was something gorgeous about him that heightened the sensitivities to the promises of life.(6)'; Another stuffed character is George Wilson. • 5. The Great Depression Isolation In Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men The Great Depression isolation " A guy needs somebody– to be near him." He whined, " A guy goes nuts if he ain 't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he's with you" (Steinbeck 72). In the 1930s through the Great Depression, many people struggled to survive. They often became poor and fought with financial aid along with isolation. In the story "Of Mice And Men", Steinbeck has many of the characters experience a form of isolation. Whether it is power, segregation, or discrimination. However the characters (Candy, Curley's wife and Crooks) experience something else. Candy experiences ageism for his old age and lack of use. Curley's wife is exposed to sexism, she is not useful to the ranch is very flirtatious. Lastly,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, after overhearing the plans of George and Lennie 's dream farm, candy confides in george that he " ... ain 't much good with only one hand" (59) and "he won 't have no place to go..." (61). Pleading to be included in their dream, candy continued his attempts to convince George: " I'd make a will an' leave my share to you guys in case I kick off, 'cause I ain't got no relatives nor nothing" (59). Understanding just how important security is to his own future, Candy hopes he can tempt George with his life's savings and seal the deal when he mentions he had no living relatives to either help him or benefit from his death. Scared and embarrassed, Candy never comes straight out and admits how ageism has affected him, but he does express his feelings of fear and his desire to feel like he belongs when he comments to George, "They'll can me purty soon. Just as soon as I can't swamp out no bunkhouses..." (60). Without any family or friends, without a job or any money, Candy latches on to the idea of owning land together: " And' it'd be our own an' nobody could can us" (58). Unfortunately, since Candy is much older than the other ranch workers, he often feel left out and lonely amongst a group of young, healthy men. • 6. Great Depression In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men The drama of Mice and Men takes place in a rural time period set in the years of the Great Depression. The two find themselves in Salinas Valley, California when a tragic accident puts them on the run and George to protect his best friend and partner in crime. Lennie has a mental disorder that makes him slower than others. He loves small, fluffy, soft animals. He often keeps a small mouse in his pocket to comfort him, but his disorder makes him unaware of his strength, Lennie kills the mice he keeps. Lennie just wants to touch and comfort these animals, but always hurts them. Lennie and George were at a near–by town when they meet Curly, an old handyman and farmer. • 7. Is There Some Good In The Worst Of Men In Great Expectations Dickens's Claim Men and women can be in prison for doing terrible things. Although, some inmates are greeted by loved ones with happiness. It always fascinated me how these men and women could have such loving relationships even though they are locked up for doing a crime. When I see inmates expressing their love to visitors it really makes me think, "Is there some good in the worst of men?" In the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, any reader can see Dickens's claim that there is some good in the worst of men. The first example of Dickens's claims is Pip's first terrifying encounter with his future benefactor. As Pip visits his mother and father he is disrupted by a thundering voice, "'Hold your noise!' cried a terrible voice, as a man started up from among the graves. 'Keep still, you little devil, or I'll cut your throat'" (Dickens 5). As the convict threatens Pip's life, it scares Pip for what is to come the unknown man. When it comes to choosing leaders, it often seems that the will of the people often will back the man they perceive to not just be good, but great. Great in what though? Whether the people have a choice of their leader or are forced into living under the command of their leader, people will more times than not, more willingly summit themselves to the rule of a great man rather than a man who is simply good or on the other end a tyrant. Cyrus the Great, as portrayed by historian Xenophon in The Education of Cyrus shows perhaps one of the greatest leaders of the ancient world, especially in the region of the modern day Middle East. Xenophon describes to his reader the renowned and extremely loved character of Cyrus as both a conqueror and as an emperor. In seeing Cyrus as a military ruler and as a ruler over a vast nation, Cyrus appears to be the perfect man for modern day, Republican politics. Through the dissection of the character of Cyrus, laid out by Xenophon, both as a conquer and as an emperor, it becomes evident that Cyrus, if alive today, would prove to be the perfect leader of the people of the free world. As president, there are two major roles that encompass all other roles that the person who takes the position must be able to balance: commander–in–chief to the armed forces and leader of the people of the nation. The American Dream gave hope to all Americans that they have a chance to be successful despite their backgrounds. Although the American Dream inspired many, several people took a more negative view on it. Both F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck criticize the American Dream in their novels: The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men. In these two novels, Gatsby and Lennie both have dreams they so desperately want to achieve. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men are set in two close time periods, but give a different feel to the setting in each book. In both books, women have a status lower than men. Daisy, Jordan, Myrtle and Curley's wife are seen as inferior, most likely due to society's view of women during the time periods. In The Great Gatsby and in Of Mice and Men, the American Dream is often put aside, seen through the actions of women characters. The idea of the American Dream has been around since America was founded, but until 1933, it was not put into words. In the article American Faces 1933's Realities, by James Truslow Adams, he defines the American Dream as " ...a vision of a better, deeper, richer life for every individual, regardless of the position in society which he or she may occupy by the accident of birth" (1). The American Dream does not have to be described as having copious amounts of wealth. To some, it is only a vision of a better life for themselves and their families. In the 1920s and 1930s, women may have been able to vote, get a job, and be more independent, but that doesn't mean they wanted to. They earned lower pay and worked in harsh conditions, in the 1930s. They were also criticized for taking jobs away from the men. Many of the thoughts about how women should live still carried over from past years. In the novel Of Mice and Men we can see how an unlikely pair of two men make their journey during the era of the Great Depression trying to make a stake to own their own land, but unfortunate events take place. As the novel takes action we can see how men exhibiting their masculinity, how they demonstrate their masculinity, and how women are irrelevant, and only used for pleasure. Masculinity is used as a roles you have to play right. From CurleyВ’'s history to being a boxer he still was not respected but that what drove him to try to make himself more respectable. • 28. Gender Roles In 'The Great GatsbyAndOf Mice And Men' In the early 20th century, feminism was not very common thus women had less value than men in society. Two great examples in english literature that indirectly talk about this implicitly are The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men. The Novel The Great Gatsby, is about a man called Nick Carraway, who moves next door to a mysterious rich man called Gatsby. During the book he finds out about the differences in society and the relationships between people in different social classes. In Of Mice and Men you learn about two men who travel around and look for jobs in spite of buying their own farm. Throughout the story the reader learns about the differences between relationships of different and equal gender. People of the same gender (man to man) talk and laugh whereas relationships between different genders (man to woman) are noticeably contrasting, meaning that nobody talks to the only female person on the ranch. Both authors develop different female characters, who are not seen as level with man but as inferior to them. In The Great Gatsby, there are three major female roles who all show a variety of personalities and their importance fluctuates, yet they have a similarity. All of them have worse qualities than the male characters in the book. Nick describes Daisy, one of the women and his cousin, as "a coward" and says "you could see that she never intended to do anything at all"(FITZGERALD, 132). In the book she represents a typical image of "woman" as shy, weak, and sneaky. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Of Mice And Men And The Great Gatsby The two novels The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men are very similar in many ways. In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby spends his whole life working towards a dream. He grew up dirt poor, and eventually made himself into a millionaire. However, his entire dream was centered around one person, a married woman named Daisy Buchanan. Right when he was the closest to achieving his dream, Gatsby was shot and killed for something he didn't do. In Of Mice and Men, Lennie and George make every decision in life with one thing in mind, their dream of owning their own ranch someday. Lennie's life revolves around that dream; it is all he thinks about. Lennie even dies while still envisioning how he desperately wanted his life to turn out. In these two novels,... They don't want to be millionaires like Gatsby, they just want a small farm with their own land to tend to and animals to raise. They want to work for themselves and be able to take off work and go to the carnival whenever they want to. While George wants this dream also, I think that Lennie is the one who needs it the most. Lennie's entire life is centered around this one dream, and it is all he ever talks about. George tells him the story several times throughout the novel. George and Lennie travel as migrant workers to earn money to achieve their dream. They too want material things, however their dream is slightly more reasonable. Lennie tells about wishing to raise chickens and rabbits and tending to their own crops. They want to better themselves from the poor workers they are now, into comfortable and profitable farmers. Not only does Lennie want these things to live a fulfilling life, he also wants to fit in. Many other people, like the man he works for, own their own land, and he wants to do the same. In addition to both George and Lennie wanting to fit in with society, Lennie also wants to fit in with the other men on the ranch. He specifically wants to be accepted and loved by George, who sometimes makes Lennie feel like a burden. At one point, Lennie offers to leave and go life on his own, but George realizes that he is hurting his feelings, so he apologizes and they continue on with working to attain their goal. Similarly to The Great Gatsby, George and Lennie are very close to attaining their goal when it all comes crashing down. Lennie gets himself into trouble and George is forced to make a very difficult decision, whether to shoot Lennie and let him die peacefully, or let the other men find him first and possibly torture him. • 30. The Great Gatsby vs of Mice and Men The American Dream is an idea that many Americans share and have faith in, but it can be used as a false promise of success. This notion is explored through the texts The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men written by F.Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck respectively. The Great Gatsby was first published in 1926. The novel is set in the summer of 1922 and follows the life of Jay Gatsby who tries to get the love of his life back, Daisy Buchanan, through his wealth and social status. Of Mice and Men follows the lives of George Milton and Lennie Small who are migrant farm workers. Lennie is mentally incapable but George is there to protect him. Gatsby sees marriage as an expression of love. This is evident when Gatsby responds 'You loved me too?' after Daisy had confessed her love to him. West Egg, East Egg and The Valley of Ashes have been used to represent the three different types of classes in society during the 1920s. The construction of the setting has been used to show us the conflict between the people who had old money with the people who had new money and how people with no money were isolated from the high class and overlooked. The conflicts between the classes show us that the pursuing the American Dream may lead to wealth and prosperity, but it certainly does not provide happiness among people. The Great Depression was the result of life during the Roaring Twenties. People heavily valued materialism and hedonism which in–turn made many people try to find a way to gain a large amount of money in a short period of time. The idea that anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, or financial status, could rise from the depths and become anything they wanted to be with no more than hard work and determination has attracted people from all around the world. Two writers from America's past, however, have a different opinion on the once –great American Dream. F. In a different, yet similar way, Steinbeck also uses irony to illustrate the American Dream. He too shows the problems of the Dream with his use of the literary device. "Before George answered, Candy dropped his head and looked down at the hay. He knew. George said softly, " – I think I knowed from the very first. I think I knowed we'd never do her. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would." (Steinbeck, 94) After so much work and pain, George and Candy realize that their dream has been a lost cause. While kind, Lennie's mistakes have ended their goal of purchasing their own land and having a better life. George still has a chance of attaining his goal, but it has been severely injured. In the honest efforts of George, Lennie, and Candy, Steinbeck presents some form of flaw in the American Dream with his use of the brutal irony that is the downfall of the trio's dream. Both authors have an apparent detestation towards what the American Dream has become in their time, and irony proves to be an outstanding apparatus to capture their thoughts. The settings of both novels also help the reader observe the authors' perspective of the faltering American Dream. The Great Gatsby And Of Mice And Men In the novel 'The Great Gatsby' and 'Of Mice and Men' F Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck respectively explore the complex perspective of the true outcome of the American Dream. Although set within different eras of American society, the extensive failure of dreams throughout both texts shows how the American Dream is destined for annihilation despite the intention of hope and happiness. In its original form the American Dream encapsulated the ideal that 'equality of opportunity is available to any American allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved'. 'The Great Gatsby' follows its protagonist Jay Gatsby who sets his life around his desire of reuniting Daisy Buchanan, the lost love of his life, through the eyes of Nick ... Crooks however dismisses these beliefs by referencing other ranch workers, "hundreds of men", to be exact, who have the same aspirations of owning their own land but "God damn one of em' ever gets it." The culmination of both texts simply resides that once the potential of the American Dream becomes a reality it results in the collapse of everyone's dreams and aspirations. The social hierarchy is influenced by the amount of money one owns which determines whether one can attain their dream. By creating apparent social classes within 'The Great Gatsby' – old money, new money and no money, Fitzgerald strongly suggests that American society is intensely stigmatised. Daisy, Tom and Jordan represent the elite social class of society where despite their problems and failures they are always protected and immune by their wealth. Tom refers to Gatsby as 'Mr Nobody from nowhere" and a "common swindler who would have to steal the ring he put on her finger" as he boasts about his hereditary wealth compared to the other distinct elite group of society who acquire their wealth through business deals, which are sometimes corrupt. Although Fitzgerald mainly attacks the rich, by making them look judgemental, superior and selfish, evidently the lower class of society are vulnerable within American society. Taking his experiences of growing up in the Salinas Valley, Steinbeck tells the story of two men, George Milton and Lennie Small, who wander around seeking job opportunities on ranches. The struggle showed in the poem is a mouse working hard to create a shelter for himself and then it is plowed over by a farmer. A Comparison of "Of Mice and Men" and "The Great Depression An Eyewitness History" The Great Depression is comparable to Lennie and George's life. I would like to give a comparison of George Milton and Lennie Small to the Great Depression. The time that this story took place was during the Great Depression. John Steinbeck captured the reality of this most difficult time. During the Great Depression people needed to travel together to share chores and duties to make a living until something better came along. That is the way George and Lennie traveled. They traveled together to take care of each other but George took care of Lennie the most, because he was always getting in trouble. "You do bad things and I got to get you... This sort of ties in with the attitude of the people during the Great Depression because people were constantly unsettled. The people in the Great Depression were losing all of the money that they had worked so hard to earn and save. When the banks closed, they lost everything. When someone found themselves in great difficulty on a farm or ranch they had to seek some other opportunity. It was very important to not let anyone know what had happened where you were previously employed. In 1929, Herbert Hoover was elected president. Wall Street was greatly affected by the greatest stock market crash in the history of the United States of America. This caused everyone and especially the banks to panic. Everyone was naturally concerned about the safety of their money. They went to the banks to get what money they could. There was not enough money for everyone to withdrawal. This was the beginning of the Great Depression. During this period president Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated. President Roosevelt said, "So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself––nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." • 41. Differences Between The Great Gatsby And Of Mice And Men Today, it is more evident than ever that there are deep divisions within modern society along the lines of race, class and gender. These divides are highlighted by recent protests, riots and movements. These issues are relevant in modern society as well as in two famous stories. Both F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men use character development to make commentary toward these points. Fitzgerald's novel covers the tumultuous journey of Nick Carraway through the swanky social elite of the 1920's. Steinbeck's text covers the opposite end of the spectrum, detailing the experiences of George and Lennie, ranchers during the great depression. While also providing a riveting and captivating plot, these seemingly antithetical tales both develop their respective characters to be normal, everyday people who face difficult problems because of their class. F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby details the tribulations that come with being immensely rich or extremely poor. One such example is the original decision by Daisy to bypass Gatsby and instead get married to Tom. Later on in the book, it is revealed that Daisy was in love with Gatsby and he was in love with her, but they couldn't get married, primarily because they occupy different social strata (Fitzgerald 151). She instead marries Tom and immediately regrets it. Fitzgerald crafted this situation to make commentary on how money and the need to be around it, can cause people to cut ...
