The Importance Of Equality In Ayn Rand's Anthem
In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand Equality leaves the harsh society to enter the forbidden forest to
leave all the rules that the council had made behind, and he would not make these rules from the
society because it would have no purpose of creating a new one. He had left his home to escape all
of the harsh rules that were put in place, and also to learn how life used to be and could be in the
future of his own society. If Equality was to have this new society he would want his children to use
the personal pronouns, and be able to think for themselves and not as a whole. The rules that were
made were made for everyone to be the same. Even though no matter what they do no one will be
the same. Everyone has to refer to them as one, they are not allowed to use personal pronouns. Then
Equality begins to realize how unfair things really are and that is when he enters the forbidden
forest. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Equality says this he wants no one to ever have to refer to everyone instead of themselves he
believes that is is a cruel punishment for something he and everyone else did not do. He wants to be
able to have his own thoughts instead of living a lie by saying definite statements for all. So, when it
comes to having a new society Equality would want everyone to be able to be their own person
instead of everyone else and not have to be controlled as much by referring to all instead of

Compare And Contrast Romeo And Juliet Movie
There were many different aspects of each Romeo and Juliet movie that made all three versions
equally different, exciting, and heartbreaking. First off, in the Zeffirelli version, the producers did a
wonderful job of setting the movie to really reflects how Shakespeare wrote his play. For example,
the movie was set in Verona during the Elizabethan Era, and the clothing and way of speaking to one
another fully represented the old times. Also the casting for this movie was excellent, Olivia Hussey
(Juliet) was very cute and fit the role perfectly, as well as Leonard Whiting (Romeo) who played his
part very well. Lastly, the balcony scene was very sweet and showed how much Romeo and Juliet
loved each other after knowing the other for less than a day. This movie was made so well that there
is really no negative aspects to it. It is simply made and beautiful, but the Elizabethan language is
quite hard to understand, as it should be. Next, in the movie starring Leonardo Dicaprio, the
producers did an excellent job of making Claire Danes (Juliet) look very young. She wore little
makeup and had a flat chest, which represents what a thirteen year old would probably look like
back then. Also, the way they filmed the scene on Romeo's death was incredible. The producers
really showed how someone would react to watching their loved one die. The only aspect that was a
little confusing, was how the characters used guns called "swords" instead of actually swords. But in
keeping their

Death-Marked Love
A Star–Crossed Review of Death–Marked Love.
Today I have just finished watching the movie Romeo and Juliet, and I'd like to give my personal
opinion of the movie. The movie has tons of love scenes and fights. The company Paramount
Pictures published the movie in 1968. The director was Franco Zeffirelli. The plot of Romeo and
Juliet is relatively simple. Romeo goes to a ball, Juliet is there, Romeo see Juliet, and he falls in
love. The same night, Juliet falls in love with Romeo. The movie takes place in Verona, Italy. The
main characters are Romeo and Juliet, two young lovers whose families have been feuding. The
story is about the two lovers trying to be together, but their families constantly get in the way.
For the most part, the actors did fairly well. I especially enjoyed the performance of Romeo, played
by Leonard Whiting. He brought Romeo to life but not in an overly exaggerated way. Juliet, played
by Olivia Hussey, also did a decent job. However, when it came to trying scenes, she did that same
crying voice and pose. It got repetitive towards the end and killed the moments that were supposed
to be heart wrenching. The Nurse and Priest did an excellent job, but I expected that from veteran
actors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not because it's a bad production, it's actually fairly good for its age, but because I just don't have
anybody I know who would enjoy watching the movie. The MPAA rating for Romeo and Juliet is
PG. I don't agree with that rating myself. I think it should be PG–13, for a couple of reasons. One,
there's that mild nudity scene that we skipped over, the multiple deaths, and lastly two people
commit suicide over each other! That is not a great message to send to kids! With PG–13, at least
kids in that age bracket would know that committing suicide over a five day romance is a dumb
idea. Also that you don't actually have to be married and have a kid by the age of

Virginia Woolf's Death Of The Moth
Virginia Woolf's essay "Death of the Moth" gave me an in depth look into how death is inevitable
and how nature "dies" just like us. Death of the Moth" thoroughly describes how she sees a month
trapped in a fragment of her window and is fighting for his life. The speaker seems willing to help
the moth, but then further leans to the idea that the moth is trying to escape death. Witnessing the
death of the moth, she feels that this is exactly what the "circle of life" entails. Despite the feeling of
loss, she comprehends that the death of the moth was bound to happen as it does with every other
creature. She also fully understands that the death of the moth is just a normal part of life. The
speaker lets us know that when we are fighting for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It shows that the speaker is starting to feel empathy for the moth when she starts realizing how
valuable life is. For us humans we believe that death is inevitable, but as we see the struggle the
moth is going to we know that the creature believes otherwise. As we begin to read further, we see
how the speaker believes that the people working hard outside the window is just as relevant and
consequential as the moth "zig–zagging" across the room. As humans, we are already accustomed to
waking up and completing our daily tasks as a ritual. We do these tasks with ignorance and
carelessly to what we may believe does not exist, death. I believe the speaker was focused and
highlighted the life of the moth to open our eyes to these signification and enjoyable moment we do
not tend to appreciate. When applying this essay into real life, we now think about those moments
where we overworked ourselves on a task or when we retrieves all these awards and honors, but the
truth is when it comes to that time it will all die out with you. Furthermore, the speaker wants us to
know that by witnessing the death of this creature, she started to realize how valuable life really is
and how we may take it for

Freedom In Ayn Rand's Anthem
"There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always
evil."– Ayn Rand author, philosopher and screenwriter. The main character of Ayn Rand's Anthem ,
Equality 7–2521 deals with a government that has destroyed all freedoms of the people and believes
everyone who is born exists only to work for the state. Equality 7–2521, also known as Prometheus
wrote this story based off of the events he experienced. Or in his eyes the "sins" he has experienced.
Equality's assessment of his sin is correct; the government has been holding the people back from
their full true potential. The very first sentence of the book comes from Equality, "It is a sin to write
this." Equality can look at his actions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He thought for himself. He thought about what he wanted and wished for the most. He had free
thought. He was different. Others viewed Equality as a disgrace. In a society where people are
supposed to be equal, ironically Equality was treated unequal. He showed many divergent traits
from the other people he lived with. He thought for himself by showing his passion for science and
discovery. The Council of Vocations is where the people go to receive their occupations "This was
the only thing which moved, for the lips of the oldest did not move as they said: 'Street Sweeper.'"
(Rand pg 29). In this quote the council is punishing Equality for being "different". Equality's dream
was to become a scholar, but since he had a love for science and was every intelligent, he was
looked at as "different". The "sin" Equality writes in the beginning also ties in with this. For
example: A God is the most powerful being humans have thought of. Gods choose and rule over all,
and since that the Council decides what is right for everyone in this case they are the

Review Of Ayn Rand's Anthem
Anthem: A Review Anthem written by Ayn Rand is a novella about Equality 7–2521 and the
dystopian society he lives in. Everything is decided by a World Council and doing anything that
makes you stand out is classified as crime, your individuality is seen as a great evil. It is a warning
of how putting others in front of yourself is a great evil. So, after all 105 pages, how good was
Anthem exactly? Plot (6/10): The plot of Anthem is quite simple, almost everything you have seen
in a dystopian novel is also portrayed in Anthem. What is unique about Anthem however, is how the
plot is given to you. Pronouns in Anthem are quite unique, replacing words like "I" or "me" to those
that refer to the group ("we" or "our"). This little change causes the story feel more unsettling, as it
gives the reader a sense that no one truly has a mind of their own. ... Show more content on

There is nothing in the book that really separates Equality 7–2521 from other characters of works
similar to his own and as such, they just feel stale. The characters in Anthem are not the focus of the
story and as such they are weakest part of the book. I wanted him to struggle with the ideals of
society and how he is shunned, but instead we get Rebellious Protagonist 7–2521. Setting

Equality In Ayn Rand's Anthem
In the dark ages many lack the intelligence of simple knowledge. The lack of knowledge leaves one
without correct judgement. In the city of Anthem numerous of rules are proposed to serve
"equality". In such place one is contained in a mental state of obedience to what they believe is
correct. Apparently the rules and regulations in the city of Anthem were to assure that no individual
is more superior than another, yet achieve justice incorrectly. Words such as "I", "him", or even
"her" were forbidden due to the fact that, that proved inequality, because if one is referring to
another or themselves as and individual you place yourself apart from society causing you to think
highly or poorly of yourself. They tried to depict a world of equality by ... Show more content on

Essay about Poetry Analysis Mezzo Cammin
Mezzo Cammin
The poem Mezzo Cammin by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow explains his regretful life and his
reasoning at why he didn't live it to its full potential and how he looks at his past. It then looks to his
future as being near and bearing a huge weight down on him. The way Longfellow talks about his
life is depressing. He doesn't speak of the good accomplishments, only the things he hasn't done
until he looks back into the past and then forward at how the future may be. In the first part of the
poem Longfellow talks about his life being halfway over and everything that stopped him from
really living his life. In the very first couple of lines he says "I have let the years slip from me and
have not fulfilled the aspiration of my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He describes it strangely, "And hear above me on the autumnal blast The cataract of Death far
thundering from the heights." These lines are very open ended and in one way he could be speaking
of death as far away by the way he describes the thundering waterfall very high up. The reference to
height could mean its at a good distance that he can see it, but its still far away. It could also mean
he has more of his life to live up to and his regretful past doesn't mean much to him anymore
because he has his future to look forward to as he is on his metaphorical hill of life. In another view,
he could be describing death as being right around the corner and him looking right at it when he
describes the waterfall. You could look at it as him having a life threatening disease and him
knowing his death is coming soon, which could also describe the way he views his past full of
regret. If he knew the end is coming soon and he doesn't believe he fully lived his life to how he
wishes, the regret is understandable and the cataract of death makes sense in this point of view.
Overall, this poem shows the past, present, and future of the writer. His life is full of regret at points
and then seems hopeful in others. This poem could be viewed in many ways but mostly you
understand it as a man who wishes he could change his past because he knows his future is near and
his life will soon be coming to an

Individualism Exposed In Ayn Rand's Anthem
The Book "Anthem" written Ayn Rand is the tale of a man with many names "Equality–7 2521" to
"The Unconquered" to "Prometheus". He is living in a dystopian world where individualism has
been eradicated. Due to the dark times technological advancement and individualism brought, in
what seems to be life after an apocalypse they have been limited those to a bare minimum. It took 50
years for the candle to be approved and the word "I" has been banned and punishable by death. In a
society where they try to suppress the aware and the main protagonist being exceptionally smart
which generates conflict. The book "Anthem" is based off of communism in Russia where people
are prison for the very simple things. No one ever tries to escape the corrective faculty because of 3
reason the prisoner never purposely betrayed the council so why would they start now. and wait to

they go, into the uncharted forest?"These men do not return. They perish from hunger and from the

killed alone from the unpredictable land. The mercy from the council is greater than the mercy from
the land. "We are walking to the fangs awaiting us somewhere among the great, silent trees. There is
not a thing behind us to regret." While in the forest he feels like he's doomed but will continued to

Theme Of Conflict In Ayn RandBy Equality 7-2521
The writing of the author's work depicts the author's purpose in the novel. With the tragic society
that Equality 7–2521 survives in, it not only proclaims the major conflicts in the story, but also
passes along Ayn Rand's writing on how it contributes to expressing the conflicts even further. The
prime conflict is individualism itself in a world that doesn't follow the philosophy of one's
attributions to be upheld. It doesn't exist because of a society that sways the course of people's lives,
coming in the way to maintain an atmosphere with no higher power than another. "We are one in all
and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever."(Rand, 1) This
is shown in the novel because Equality 7–2521 cannot go ahead with what he wants to have for
himself in life which is to be in the Home of the Scholars but instead is assigned to become a Home
Sweeper. Moreover, the style that Ayn Rand uses in her writing gives the readers the better
awareness of how strict the society is that not even the narrator can speak and refer about himself. It
is a sin for anyone to fall in love and choose their own mate as Equality 7–2521 wants and des with
Liberty 5–3000. He went to prison for writing, doing scientific experiments inside a hidden tunnel,
falling in love and most of all presenting to the council an invention that doesn't exist in a world
without advanced technology. The manner that she uses helps to spread across the message about a

Zeffirelli Versus Luhrmann's Film
Zeffirelli's film depiction of the balcony scene is superior to Luhrmann's film because it is truer to
Shakespeare's play and has a better interpretation of the play to film. The films are similar in that it's
night and Juliet looks out her balcony as Romeo leaves her house. Although the Luhrmann film
depiction during the balcony scene was in a lavish house which would have never been seen during
the time frame of when the play was written. There may have been lavish houses during the time the
play was written, but they don't come close to the setting in the Zeffirelli film. This plays a key role
in the film seeing that the accuracy of the events of the scene help to give the viewers an enhanced
feel to the original atmosphere. Another significant

Contrasts between Zeffirelli and Luhrmann’s Romeo and...
Contrasts between Zeffirelli and Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet There are many differences, large
and small, between Zeffirelli and Luhrmann's version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. After
seeing the first scene of both of these films, some notable contrasts became clear. The props used in
both films differ greatly, in the 1967 version, very dated costumes were used, it looked like the
director wanted a medieval style to be shown in the film judging by the costumes and props used.
Real swords were drawn by the Capulet's and the Montague's as the play suggests but the fighting
seemed quite unbelievable to a modern day viewer as did some of the stalls used in the small market
surroundings. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The scenery in each play also differs greatly; the 1967 version is set in a medieval village with
castles and a small market. Again its age shows as the buildings and backdrops look quite fake
against the modern scenery in the 1997 film. Good lighting is used in the older film but again the
newer one has realistic effects and buildings and overall has better quality scenery. In both films,
certain lines are missed out or changed slightly; I think the language used is basically the same but
in the market it was hard at times to hear what exactly was being said over all the noise of the
villagers. Although Luhrmann did a good job of bringing modern props into the film, the language
used in play sounded odd coming from modern people, dressed in modern clothes at a petrol station.
So I think the older film did a better job with the language despite the hearing difficulty in some
parts. The Acting quality was good in both films, but I found the style in the early 1967 version was
boring and the fight scenes were slightly unbelievable. The 1997 version was more exciting and kept
u interested but there wasn't really much between the two films in the quality of acting. Finally I
looked at the different camera techniques used, it was interesting to see that both plays had shots of
the legs or shoes of one of the families, Zeffirelli shot

Interpretation of the Balcony Scene by Baz Luhrmann and Franco Zeffirelli of William
Shakespreare's Romeo and Juliet "Romeo and Juliet" is a famous love story written by William
Shakespeare. Two interpretations were made of this text into a film by the two directors, Baz
Luhrmann (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli (1968). The films use different types of media to portray the
characters and the overall context of Shakespeare's play. I will be focusing on Act two Scene ii (the
balcony scene) where I will compare how the two directors use media in the films. In Baz

It triggers off when Romeo bumps into the statues and smashes them on the floor which makes the
dogs bark and there is an addition of rustling leaves, these are some of the sound effects that have
been used, which builds up tension and causes more of a scene. In action to this, Romeo climbs up
the wall that leads to Juliet's balcony in order to get to her. The camera shot used is a close up of
Romeo to show his emotional distress that he is feeling. The statues in this scene represent Juliet as
a goddess and that she is very important, this is a key fact to remember in Romeo's eyes. This
version is different to the text as Juliet does not say her famous lines from the balcony, but comes
down from her room to the pool outside, where she recites her lines with passion thinking of her
dear Romeo. In Zeffirelli's account of the film, Romeo is shown down below in the bushes whereas
Juliet is the higher and more powerful person out of the two of them, and she is shown as the higher
person sitting on the balcony. Once again this has been showing the higher and lower and lower
angle shots. It also shows a point of view camera shot throughout this scene, meaning that the film
would be played throughout the character's eyes, as if Romeo or Juliet were filming it themselves.

Romeo And Juliet And Franco Zeffirelli's
Timeless yet calamitous, Romeo and Juliet is the classic story of two star–crossed lovers. Written by
William Shakespeare in 1597, it has been read by many over the course of hundreds of years.
Having been adapted into plays and films several times over, the archetype of two star–crossed
lovers is prevalent in many pieces of literature and movies. Starring Olivia Hussey as Juliet and
Leonard Whiting as Romeo, the movie released in 1968 was directed by Franco Zeffirelli; Baz
Luhrmann directed his own interpretation less than thirty years later, which starred Leonardo
DiCaprio as Romeo and Claire Danes as Juliet. Both versions of the play had very diverse
screenplays, but both movies were able to keep the original storyline of Shakespeare's original play.
Franco Zeffirelli's version is more true to the original play and it is capable of capturing the essential

Found in these two characters, innocence is essential to the storyline because this element is a major
factor that influenced the character's actions. Both Romeo and Juliet are relatively young; especially
Juliet because she is said to be thirteen. Also, it is important for the actors in the movies to be able to
portray this youthful quality. Despite maturity being a desirable trait for many people, it is necessary
for Juliet to be depicted as young and naïve. Franco Zeffirelli is capable of achieving this by casting
Olivia Hussey. Acting well, Olivia was capable of playing the role of Juliet, as it would have been in
the play. On the other hand, Claire Danes playing Juliet, as seen in Luhrmann's adaptation, was
good; but could have been performed better. Her character seemed to mature to portray the naïveté
that Juliet possesses. By casting Hussey as Juliet, Zeffirelli was able to come closer to the true
nature of the play because Juliet's innocence was captured in her character more

Where Wizards Stay Up Late
Where Wizards Stay up Late
Where Wizards Stay up Late, the Origins of the Internet. Katie Hafner and Matthew Lyon walk us
through the beginnings of the Internet. The authors will talk about how a computer–engineering firm
produced the first prototypes of the "Arpanet," and how a group of men made the Internet as we
know it today. It tells the intriguing story of how the technology for the Internet was devised. In
many respects, it is very much a "behind–the–scenes" kind of documentary.
When thinking about the Internet, one always appears to assume that the development of computer
technology has been driven by a few giants of the industry. Indeed, we always assume that it is the
big people that made it. And yet, the truth is very different. The authors show us how many of the
developments surrounding the Internet were brought about with the support and often the leadership
of the government. Indeed, it was the government funding that made a lot of these realities possible.
Thus, this is basically a case study of what the development of networking achieved.
In the book, we encounter the process of "packet switching," which is a technique in which a digital
message is broken up into smaller "packets" that can be routed separately through a network to their
destination. This is how the Internet was discovered.
The two authors follow the story from the conception of the idea of "packet switching" in the early
1960s to the creation and development of the Internet. We see how one

Star Trek Racism

Star Trek and Racism
Star Trek is one of the most successful and lasting entertainment franchises of all time. While it
takes place in a futuristic society, the series explores issues that were widespread in the time of it's
making. This includes one of the most prevalent issues of our time: racism. Thanks to the, at the
time, radical philosophy of Gene Roddenberry, the show attracted a large audience. The adventurous
and utopian society made many people hope for a future where prejudice was a thing of the past,
and anyone could "boldly go where no man has gone before." After making such a lasting stamp on
society, I am interested in learning how the Star Trek series allowed viewers to learn and accept the
truth of uncomfortable social and personal matters within our society. In the 1960's, the Civil Rights
Movement in the United States had finally gained ground and much progress had been made.
However, segregation was still very prevalent in society. In an era when racism was extensive, Star
Trek featured a racially diverse crew; this included Lieutenant Uhura, an African American woman
in charge of Communications and Lieutenant Sulu an Asian helmsman. This revolutionary decision
practically guaranteed that Star Trek would have a long lasting impression on viewers.
It is interesting to note that in Critical Theory Today by Lois Tyson, it says "The virtual exclusion of
African American history and culture from American education, which began

The Importance Of Stage Directions In Shakespeare's Romeo...
In the very beginning of Act 1, Scene 1 of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, there is a fight between
the Montagues' and the Capulets' servants about them biting their thumbs at each other; biting their
thumbs at each other was a sign of disrespect. The variations in the intonation, tones, and stage
directions in the four different variations of the scene, show the viewer or the audience how
differently they were created and how each director has different ideas about how it should look and
sound. They had different ideas about how to show the emotions of the characters. The stage
directions in the first scene by George Cukor are pretty general. They show how the characters do
have a rivalry with each other. During the fight, you could tell that each person had different

It Is Stated That General Leonard Wood Never Kept Quiet
It is stated that General Leonard Wood never kept quiet in any job that he ever held during his
thirty–five years of active federal service in the United States Army. "When there was work to do,
he has done it, from chasing Indians all over our great Southwest back in the 'eighties' and over a
good slice of Mexico's northwest, to teaching Cuba how to rule herself." (Sears, 1919) He was not

concept. As a result, the Army formed its first truly combined arms divisions. This allowed the
American Army to fight as a force in the battles and campaigns of the Great War, WWI." (Homle,

The Effects Of Video Games On The Psyche Of Kids And...
Since video games are a relatively new medium of artistic expression and entertainment, not much is
known about the effects of continual exposure to them, especially at a young age. The effects of
violent media on the psyche of kids and adolescents has been a pressing concern for many years
now, as stated in a study conducted by Tortolero et al. (2014), where it is observed that most other
studies done on the subject of video games were mainly focused on aggression (p.609). In the
current attempt to identify a relationship between video games and the attitudes of youths, the
researchers have decided to instead focus on levels of depressive symptoms and the amount of time
spent playing video games through a cross–sectional analysis (Tortolero et al., p.609). The
researchers have focused on the branch of psychology focused on mental health, clinical psychology
(King, 2014, p.16), and the psychological problems associated with prolonged exposure to violent
video games, specifically in preadolescents. The study was meant to observe the levels of depressive
symptoms in children who played violent video games using the Major Depressive Disorder Scale
of the DISC Predictive Scales to identify these symptoms which included lack of pleasure, lack of
interest in activities, concentration difficulties, low energy, low self–worth, and suicidal ideation
(Tortelo et al., 2014, p.610–611).
The purpose of the study was to see if there was a correlation between the amounts of time spent

Equality 7-2521 In Ayn Rand's Anthem
Anthem 5 July 2014 The first few pages had me wonder why those rules were placed upon people.
Why was being different a bad thing, did it make people superior than others? In the first paragraph
it says, "IT IS A SIN TO WRITE THIS. It is a sin to think words no other think and to put down
upon a paper no others to see. It is base and evil" (Rand 17). The narrator explains that no one has
the right to write with Council of Vocations telling them to do so. They had many limitations. The
main character, Equality 7–2521, does not quite fit in like everyone else. He is tall and he tells us
that it is evil. It is a sin to be different from the others. He tries to fit in but it does not work.

Essay On Anthem
Ideologies are meant to be shared and learned throughout a society to encourage the spread as well
as competition of ideas. Through Anthem, Ayn Rand warned of the dangers of blindly and
unquestionably following an ideology; the dangers to society that unexamined loyalty to a belief
system cause to society are upholding oppressive and dehumanizing morals, decreased quality of
life and the government taking advantage of their citizens
Corrupt governments, such a the one in Anthem, use laws and its citizens' ignorance to dehumanize
them thus detaching them from their senses of identity. One way in which the government
influences identity is through education. As Equality quotes his teachers in his journal to describe
men's place in society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is not good to feel too much joy nor to be glad that our body lives. For we matter not and it must
not matter to us whether we live or die, which is to be as our brothers will it. But we, Equality 7–
2521, are glad to be living. If this is a vice, then we wish no virtue." (Rand 11)
The citizens of Anthem are not happy and until society changes, they can never be. Quality of life is
having something to live for and human condition is actively looking for it for yourself. In Anthem,
government tells the citizens what to believe and how to think, making it impossible for them to
have an authentic quality of life. The government taught them that their lives are disposable and do
not have much value. This decreases of life because these people cannot achieve true happiness due
to the ideologies they follow unquestionably and trust. They do not have anything to live for save
existence itself and they do not understand how much they are affected by that. Decreasing quality
of life because of blind beliefs in a society's ideologies is just as bad as these people being taken
advantage of by their system of government.
The citizens of Anthem are consistently being used by the government because they choose to
ignorantly believe their society's opinions. At the end of the story when Equality tries to analyze
why his society is so corrupted, he summarizes his thoughts by writing "What is freedom? Freedom
from what? There is nothing to take a man's

Damned In Ayn Rand's Anthem
Nowadays, individuality is perched on top of the highest pedestal. There's nothing that compares
with the ability to stand apart from each other and no one dares take that away. But in Ayn Rand's
novella called Anthem, it is the complete opposite; there are numerous Councils who are in charge
of everything for the people. Some of the things include, what jobs and what future people have and
also they regulate intelligence and inventions. Equality 7–2521, later renamed Prometheus, is a
member of this dystopian society; he isn't at all similar to his brothers. This, leads to his urge to
break away from them. The Council and the society damn him because of his actions and brain, but
after his escape, he realizes this damnation is hilarious because they are the damned, not him.

The Main Techniques of Telling a Story in Various Films
The First film I'm going to talk about is "The Blair witch project" which is a story about 3 teenagers
who are filming a documentary about The Blair Witch which is a legend told for years which is said
to be true. They act and talk in dialogue making the film seem real we can also relate to this film if
we have ever filmed ourselves hanging out with our friends as this is simply what this film does.
The characters are fun to start off with but as they get themselves into more situations they become
more miserable and dramatic.
They keep the camera rolling all the way through this which is a very unique, interesting way to tell

The casting of the actors was good and was interesting to see the Woman being the stronger of the
three giving out the orders and how her decision was always final and always looking for someone
to blame, didn't like it when she was wrong and was quite physically strong as she attacks one of her
friends as she finds out he through the map in the pond. She is also the last to crack but when she
does she loses her sense of power and is more feminism with her tears creating emotion and
weakness with the stress of the situation and losing one of the three teenagers as they wake up
they've disappeared. This role was clear and believable but didn't work very well as women are still
seen as being protected by the men like in all the "scream films" there is a woman as a stereotypical
type victim.
Propp's theory applies to this film the villain or malefactor being the Blair witch, there is no hero as
the characters end in their bloody deaths in a small house, the donor is the sources from the locals
about the Blair witch, the princess is the three teenagers, the false hero is the girl as she tries but
fails, the Blair witch is also the dispatcher. This theory clearly shows that the teenagers seek to
where they shouldn't ending with their bloody deaths so there is no hero

Act 2 Scene 2 Comparison Of Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet Act 2 Scene 2 Comparison There are millions of different well–known plays
around the world, some of these plays have been performed many times over and over again. Even
though these plays are repeatedly performed, every time there is a difference, every time something
has changed. Directors have this power and ability, to be able to change how a character looks, or
the point of view, or even just the facial expressions of the character. All of these little differences
affect the play and make it look brand new every single time. This will be shown through the
comparison of two different Romeo and Juliet production of Act 2 Scene 2, the balcony scene. One

Setting is an element which can be looked over by the viewer. Sometimes what makes a scene work
can be fully tied to its setting and props. With a setting that is realistic and well thought, you can
truly tie a scene together. In the Franco Zeffirelli version of the play, we can see that the setting is
around the Capulet mansion, by Juliet's balcony. Romeo is below hiding in the bushes. The leaves of
the bushes and how Romeo is below them show us how he is hiding and can't be seen by anyone,
the night sky and how dark it is in this scene also hide Romeo. Juliet is sitting on the ledge of her
balcony. In this production, the balcony is made very wide, so in the scene, Juliet can walk along the
entire balcony before Romeo speaks. This also gives her enough space to run away when she is
scared by Romeo's voice. The plot is not affected too much by these choices other than being able to
have Juliet almost run away from Romeo. Through these setting options that Franco Zeffirelli took
during his production, we have a medieval time period look and a more original looking production.

The Color White In Ayn Rand's Anthem
In the book Anthem, the color white is a symbol for innocence or lack of individuality of the citizens
and also symbolizes death. This is because the color white often shows up at important parts of the
plot to show the state of Equality 7–2521's belief (or lack there of) in the society that he lives in.
Anthem was written by a woman named Ayn Rand, who escaped communism and strongly believed
in the importance of individuality. Her views show up in both the surface meaning and the symbolic
meaning of Anthem. In chapter one of Anthem, Equality 7–2521 finds an old subway tunnel, and the
white glow of the iron tracks lead him to break the law even more than he already has by creating

three examples why it's effective, one reason is he adds a lot of flowers and candles around Juliet's

Similarities Between Anthem And Fahrenheit 451
Can you fathom a world where everything is peaceful and predetermined? The novella Anthem by
Ayn Rand and the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury depict futures where everything is
predetermined and violence, betrayal, and deception are virtually non–existent. In Anthem this
dystopia puts humanity into a dark age, which halts evolution and progression. This digression of
humanity is the result of Collectivist ideals as proposed throughout the novella, one instance is
where Rand writes, "There is nothing to take a man's freedom away from him, save other men. To
be free, a man must be free of his brothers. That is freedom. That and nothing else." (Rand, 70)

Comparison of Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet Essay
Comparison of Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare's play 'Romeo and Juliet' was
made into a film by two different directors. Baz Luhrmann's to Franco Zeffirelli's interpretation of
Romeo and Juliet were very distinct and they both appeal to different age group audiences. Franco
Zeffirelli's version was the first film of Romeo and Juliet. It was produced in 1968 and it was quiet
typical, exactly what the audience would have expected the film of 'Romeo and Juliet' to be. Unlike
Baz Luhrmann's version, which was very modern and appealed to a younger audience. Baz
Luhrmann's and Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet are perfect examples of the very different

The lighting of the scenes were similar, as both films portrayed the scene as lively and exciting at
the beginning. The only difference to the lighting is what was used to create the light. Franco
Zeffirelli used traditional items such as candles and torches. Baz Luhrmann used modern items such
as chandeliers and fireworks. The start of the party was similar in both films. Even though Franco
Zeffirelli's version of the scene started noisily, Baz Luhrmann's was noisier. Another similarity were
the camera angle shots. Both directors used a variety of camera shots, especially close up.
Luhrmann's production, the close ups were helping build tension by showing both families feelings
and facial expressions. Throughout the masked ball scene, there are a number of close ups on key
characters. For example, when Tybalt recognises Romeo at the party and when Romeo and Juliet
first set eyes on each other across the fish tank. Franco also uses close ups at these points of the
scene. The setting of the two films are also very contrasting. Zeffirelli's production was set in
Tuscany and Umbria because they were very authentic cities, which were a lot like the setting of
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, would have been. However, the Luhrmann version of Romeo and
Juliet was set in Mexico, Miami beach. This was

Comparing Film And Luhrmann's Film
In Zeffirelli's film and Luhrmann's film, there are many similar elements as well as many different
elements. Both the settings are based out side, make up is similar, cinematography has the same
characters, and the acting is serious as well as dramatic in both films. Some things that were
different are the costumes, props, and sounds. In Zeffirelli's film, the setting is outside in a village
shopping type area with a fountain. Mercutio and Benvoleo see the Capulets coming there way. I
think the reason why Zeffirelli decided to have them fight outside on the village area was because
there are many people who can watch the fight see who killed who. In Luhrmann's film, the setting
is at a beach, still filled with many people. Mercutio is sitting by the other Montagues when Tybalt
and the other Capulets come there way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many layers to their clothes as the main color on top is the house colors blue and orange.
For their pants, they are leggings. In Luhrmann's, the Montagues are wearing their tropical shirts
with no under layers, and the Capulets are wearing all black, a bit more formal than the Montagues.
The style costumes still represent who the two houses still are. Because of the different time
settings, the outfits are anywhere near the same style. In both of the films, the actors had lots of dirt
on their face from rolling around and fighting on the floor. In Zeffirelli's film there is less blood on
Romeo's face and Tybalt's face, but in Luhrmann's film there is a lot more dirt and blood on Romeos
face and shirt as well as Tybalts face and clothes. I think the reason why Luhrmann's film had a bit
more blood, dirt, and more tears was to show how much Mercutio mean't to Romeo as a friend. In
Zeffirelli's film there is less tears, blood, and tears but Romeo still shows how upset he is with
Tybalt by his dramatic sword fighting and

A kite is a victim Essay
The Poem titled "A Kite is a victim" written by Leonard Cohen contains multiple tropes. Through
my own analysis I propose that the author's central focus concerns life. Cohen discusses the
relationships and accomplishes that we make throughout our lifetimes. In my opinion, the kite is a
metaphor for the essence of life and living. Each of the four stanzas in the poem begins with a trope.
In every case the tenor is the kite. These tropes will be analyzed with regard to the central theme of
the poem.
The first tenor that I will discuss can be found in the first line of the first stanza. Cohen writes:
"A kite is a victim you are sure of".
This is personification. Leonard Cohen uses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"A desperate trained falcon" would be a strong bird whose desperation has altered his independence.
The kite or one's livelihood is like a desperate trained falcon in that life involves freedom and great
strength but each individual must be trained as they conform to society's expectations. .
"...In the high sweet air, and you can always haul it down..."
It is always yours to control and possess.
In the last trope in the first stanza is located in the ninth line:
"to tame it in your drawer."
This line represents a metaphor. The tenor is the taming of the falcon and the vehicle is the drawer.
In my interpretation I believe that the drawer represents the confines of society. You cannot actually
tame a falcon in a drawer but if the author is referring to the falcon as a person's independence and
freedom in life then the drawer represents the natural conformity within society.
"A kite is a fish you have already caught".
This is a metaphor. Once again he makes an interesting comparison. The kite, being the central
subject is the tenor of the trope and the fish already caught is the vehicle. In this case the kite is
continuing to represent life. Cohen describes it as being something you already have, something you
can never replace. There will never be another one coming along so you must take advantage of the
one that you have been given. Cohen continues this stanza with positive advice.

A Few Days By Michael Cunningham
The Hours, Michael Cunningham's telling of the lives of three women in the course of a few days,
reveals how the simplicity of objects can give insight into the characters, just by the way they
interact with them. His use of mirrors, water and flowers explain the disparities between Clarissa's,
Virginia's, and Laura's lives suggesting that ultimately their weakness is themselves.
The constant appearance of mirrors sheds light on superstition, helping us better understand Laura's
connection with Mrs. Dalloway. She contemplates life and whether or not it is worth living.
Constantly thinking about suicide creates a dark gloom over her that only leaves when she becomes
truly free. A lot of her reasoning behind not killing herself is because ... Show more content on

She does not allow herself to look into the mirror because "the mirror is dangerous; it sometimes
shows her the dark manifestation of air that matches her body, takes her form, but stands behind,
watching her, with porcine eyes and wet, hushed breathing." (Cunningham 30). By not looking into
the mirror, she gives into the shadow's presence instead of facing it head on. This reflection of
Virginia in the mirror seems to be her real self who she tries to hide because she fears facing her
"dark side" thinking it will take over her normal self. Here "dark side" refers to her insanity. "Do not
think of putrefaction or feces; do not think of the face in the mirror" (Cunningham 85). Virginia
battles demons she cannot face alone but she still refuses to ask for help. She feels apprehensive
about her ability to write well so she does not look in the mirror, since she might catch sight of the
shadow that will disturb her writing. Donald Winnicott, psychoanalyst in the field of object relations
theory, depicts suicide "as involving a fantasy of destroying bad aspects of the self with the
remainder of the self surviving, or as a destruction of the entire self when the true self is threatened
with exploitation or annihilation" (Winnicott 779). Virginia feels both exploited and annihilated
when she encounters the shadow that is actually her, so through psychoanalysis the motive for her
suicide becomes clear: escape from the monster that is emerging.

The Importance Of Modernism In Literature
Modernism, a constantly debated term, is a philosophical movement that emerged during the late
19th and early 20th centuries, following World War I. Painters, writers, and musicians did not
however perceive it just as a period in time, rather as a "commitment to experimentation in
techniques, freedom in ideas, originality in perceptions, and self–examination in emotions"
(Baughman, Bondi, Layman...etc,1) Writers, for example, like James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and
Ernest Hemingway broke away from the traditional and conventional techniques to create their own
literary voice. Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Woolf's Jacob's Room, and
Hemingway's In Our Time each exemplify distinctive styles in ideology, art, culture, and politics
which eventually became what the modernist movement, also known as the avant–garde,
appertained to. While their childhood's affected their writing, Hemingway's minimalistic technique
of composition in In Our Time, and Joyce and Woolf's prolific amount of attention to detail in A
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Jacob's Room affected the growth of the modernist
movement.
Virginia Woolf and James Joyce's similar upbringing shaped them into the people they are today.
English modernist writer and critic, Adeline Virginia Stephen, commonly acknowledged as Virginia
Woolf, was born on January 25, 1882 in London, England and died on March 28, 1941. Woolf was
born into a typical Victorian family, where the father of the family was the

Summary Of Ayn Rand's Anthem
To rule, a ruler needs control. It is the cornerstone of any society with a leader. The society Ayn
Rand creates in Anthem is no exception. In Anthem, the rules in the society depicted by Rand exist
for control, and were initially created for equality but spiraled out of control into a world built on
collectivism and backward teachings. The society Prometheus, or Equality, envisions in the final
chapters of the novella would never have any of the rules in his past society, as he realizes through
his journey that they are evil and damaging. The Unmentionable Times turned into the society we
see in Anthem through giving up freedom for the sake of equality. A high school teacher mailed

The Hours Theme
Michael Cunningham's "The Hours" tells the story of three women, each from different eras of
society, yet connected through the internal conflicts which they face. Laura Brown, one of the
novel's three protagonists, lives the white middle–class American dream. However, throughout the
novel her mental health begins to deteriorate due to the oppressive lifestyle which she feels society
has forced upon her. The Virginia Woolf portrayed by Cunningham, was in fact historically accurate
to the original Virginia Woolf. Wolf struggled with mental illness throughout her lifetime and the
idea of breaking the mold of traditional women's roles. Unlike Laura Brown and Virginia Woolf,
Clarissa Vaughn enjoys all of the freedoms which the late twentieth century allows, but is still left
questioning if her life of a conventional wife and mother is lacking something. Character, to some
extent is determined by destiny, however, when society places limitations on an individual's free
will, it will always create a desire to break away from the mold. Above all other characters in "The
Hours", Laura Brown challenges her destiny like no other. The post–war society of America in the
1950s clearly defined the roles in which women were expected to fill. Unlike most of the women
which share her similar suburban lifestyle, Laura feels dissatisfied with her life consisting of solely
marriage and motherhood. Throughout the course of the novel, Laura searches for an escape from

This week of class was very interesting once again. We watched several films, read our first book,
and had some class discussions. These three things provided me with a great deal of information on
the 1975 FBI shooting at Pine Ridge and on Native American/American Indian myths and legends.
In the films Incident at Oglala and Murder on a Reservation, I learned a great deal about the 1975
FBI shooting at Pine Ridge and have developed my own opinion about the incident. I learned that on
June 26, 1975 two FBI agents, Ronald Williams and Jack Coler, followed a red pick–up truck onto
the Jumping Bull Ranch. They were out on the reservation to serve a warrant, but they were in
unmarked cars so the Native American/American Indians feared that it was an attack and began

because they both hear things and struggle to connect to the world around them.
Virginia Woolf is thought to have bipolar II disorder. As a young child, her eldest brother sexually
abused her. She had three major breakdowns and was hospitalized for one of them. She endured
many deaths in her early years. The Sudden death of her mother in 1895 and two years later the
death of half–sister, Stella, in 1897, lead to Woolf's first mental breakdown from ages 13–16
(Woolf). Later in her early adult years, her father passed away in 1904 and 1907 her beloved brother,
Thoby, passes away; these deaths caused her second breakdown (Woolf). In 1913,less than a year
after being married, she falls into her third and final mental breakdown (Woolf). Woolf was said to
never fully recover from her 1913 mental breakdown. During the years of 1910–1913, Woolf sent on
a 'rest cure' in Twickenham to a private nursing home for women with nervous conditions (Woolf).
Before the final downfall of Virginia she was on her way to becoming a well–known author. She
was apart of the Bloomsbury group. A quote from her famous book Mrs. Dalloway, " It achieves it is
the vision of reality through the reception by Mrs. Dalloway's mind of what Virginia Woolf called
those myriad impressions– trivial fantastic, evanescent or engraved with the sharpness of steel"
("Virginia Stephen Woolf"). Although people raved about her novels, she could never feel the joy in
her success. In 1915 as was recorded to be considered her good years, happily married, publishes
her first novel, Leonard and Woolf have plans to make their own printing press (Woolf). Even
though to the public her life seems to be everything she could have wished, it was slowly taking it's
turn for the worst. The 26th of March in 1915 she Publishes " Voyage Out" and enters a Nursing
home for the next six months

  • 2. The Importance Of Equality In Ayn Rand's Anthem In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand Equality leaves the harsh society to enter the forbidden forest to leave all the rules that the council had made behind, and he would not make these rules from the society because it would have no purpose of creating a new one. He had left his home to escape all of the harsh rules that were put in place, and also to learn how life used to be and could be in the future of his own society. If Equality was to have this new society he would want his children to use the personal pronouns, and be able to think for themselves and not as a whole. The rules that were made were made for everyone to be the same. Even though no matter what they do no one will be the same. Everyone has to refer to them as one, they are not allowed to use personal pronouns. Then Equality begins to realize how unfair things really are and that is when he enters the forbidden forest. ... • 3. Compare And Contrast Romeo And Juliet Movie There were many different aspects of each Romeo and Juliet movie that made all three versions equally different, exciting, and heartbreaking. First off, in the Zeffirelli version, the producers did a wonderful job of setting the movie to really reflects how Shakespeare wrote his play. For example, the movie was set in Verona during the Elizabethan Era, and the clothing and way of speaking to one another fully represented the old times. Also the casting for this movie was excellent, Olivia Hussey (Juliet) was very cute and fit the role perfectly, as well as Leonard Whiting (Romeo) who played his part very well. Lastly, the balcony scene was very sweet and showed how much Romeo and Juliet loved each other after knowing the other for less than a day. This movie was made so well that there is really no negative aspects to it. It is simply made and beautiful, but the Elizabethan language is quite hard to understand, as it should be. Next, in the movie starring Leonardo Dicaprio, the producers did an excellent job of making Claire Danes (Juliet) look very young. She wore little makeup and had a flat chest, which represents what a thirteen year old would probably look like back then. Also, the way they filmed the scene on Romeo's death was incredible. The producers really showed how someone would react to watching their loved one die. The only aspect that was a little confusing, was how the characters used guns called "swords" instead of actually swords. But in keeping their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Death-Marked Love A Star–Crossed Review of Death–Marked Love. Today I have just finished watching the movie Romeo and Juliet, and I'd like to give my personal opinion of the movie. The movie has tons of love scenes and fights. The company Paramount Pictures published the movie in 1968. The director was Franco Zeffirelli. The plot of Romeo and Juliet is relatively simple. Romeo goes to a ball, Juliet is there, Romeo see Juliet, and he falls in love. The same night, Juliet falls in love with Romeo. The movie takes place in Verona, Italy. The main characters are Romeo and Juliet, two young lovers whose families have been feuding. The story is about the two lovers trying to be together, but their families constantly get in the way. For the most part, the actors did fairly well. I especially enjoyed the performance of Romeo, played by Leonard Whiting. He brought Romeo to life but not in an overly exaggerated way. Juliet, played by Olivia Hussey, also did a decent job. However, when it came to trying scenes, she did that same crying voice and pose. It got repetitive towards the end and killed the moments that were supposed to be heart wrenching. The Nurse and Priest did an excellent job, but I expected that from veteran actors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not because it's a bad production, it's actually fairly good for its age, but because I just don't have anybody I know who would enjoy watching the movie. The MPAA rating for Romeo and Juliet is PG. I don't agree with that rating myself. I think it should be PG–13, for a couple of reasons. One, there's that mild nudity scene that we skipped over, the multiple deaths, and lastly two people commit suicide over each other! That is not a great message to send to kids! With PG–13, at least kids in that age bracket would know that committing suicide over a five day romance is a dumb idea. Also that you don't actually have to be married and have a kid by the age of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Virginia Woolf's Death Of The Moth Virginia Woolf's essay "Death of the Moth" gave me an in depth look into how death is inevitable and how nature "dies" just like us. Death of the Moth" thoroughly describes how she sees a month trapped in a fragment of her window and is fighting for his life. The speaker seems willing to help the moth, but then further leans to the idea that the moth is trying to escape death. Witnessing the death of the moth, she feels that this is exactly what the "circle of life" entails. Despite the feeling of loss, she comprehends that the death of the moth was bound to happen as it does with every other creature. She also fully understands that the death of the moth is just a normal part of life. The speaker lets us know that when we are fighting for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It shows that the speaker is starting to feel empathy for the moth when she starts realizing how valuable life is. For us humans we believe that death is inevitable, but as we see the struggle the moth is going to we know that the creature believes otherwise. As we begin to read further, we see how the speaker believes that the people working hard outside the window is just as relevant and consequential as the moth "zig–zagging" across the room. As humans, we are already accustomed to waking up and completing our daily tasks as a ritual. We do these tasks with ignorance and carelessly to what we may believe does not exist, death. I believe the speaker was focused and highlighted the life of the moth to open our eyes to these signification and enjoyable moment we do not tend to appreciate. When applying this essay into real life, we now think about those moments where we overworked ourselves on a task or when we retrieves all these awards and honors, but the truth is when it comes to that time it will all die out with you. Furthermore, the speaker wants us to know that by witnessing the death of this creature, she started to realize how valuable life really is and how we may take it for ... • 6. Freedom In Ayn Rand's Anthem "There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil."– Ayn Rand author, philosopher and screenwriter. The main character of Ayn Rand's Anthem , Equality 7–2521 deals with a government that has destroyed all freedoms of the people and believes everyone who is born exists only to work for the state. Equality 7–2521, also known as Prometheus wrote this story based off of the events he experienced. Or in his eyes the "sins" he has experienced. Equality's assessment of his sin is correct; the government has been holding the people back from their full true potential. He thought for himself by showing his passion for science and discovery. The Council of Vocations is where the people go to receive their occupations "This was the only thing which moved, for the lips of the oldest did not move as they said: 'Street Sweeper.'" • 7. Review Of Ayn Rand's Anthem Anthem: A Review Anthem written by Ayn Rand is a novella about Equality 7–2521 and the dystopian society he lives in. Everything is decided by a World Council and doing anything that makes you stand out is classified as crime, your individuality is seen as a great evil. It is a warning of how putting others in front of yourself is a great evil. So, after all 105 pages, how good was Anthem exactly? Plot (6/10): The plot of Anthem is quite simple, almost everything you have seen in a dystopian novel is also portrayed in Anthem. What is unique about Anthem however, is how the plot is given to you. Pronouns in Anthem are quite unique, replacing words like "I" or "me" to those that refer to the group ("we" or "our"). This little change causes the story feel more unsettling, as it gives the reader a sense that no one truly has a mind of their own. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the city of Anthem numerous of rules are proposed to serve "equality". In such place one is contained in a mental state of obedience to what they believe is correct. Apparently the rules and regulations in the city of Anthem were to assure that no individual is more superior than another, yet achieve justice incorrectly. • 9. Essay about Poetry Analysis Mezzo Cammin Mezzo Cammin The poem Mezzo Cammin by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow explains his regretful life and his reasoning at why he didn't live it to its full potential and how he looks at his past. It then looks to his future as being near and bearing a huge weight down on him. The way Longfellow talks about his life is depressing. He doesn't speak of the good accomplishments, only the things he hasn't done until he looks back into the past and then forward at how the future may be. In the first part of the poem Longfellow talks about his life being halfway over and everything that stopped him from really living his life. He describes it strangely, "And hear above me on the autumnal blast The cataract of Death far thundering from the heights." These lines are very open ended and in one way he could be speaking of death as far away by the way he describes the thundering waterfall very high up. The reference to height could mean its at a good distance that he can see it, but its still far away. It could also mean he has more of his life to live up to and his regretful past doesn't mean much to him anymore because he has his future to look forward to as he is on his metaphorical hill of life. In another view, he could be describing death as being right around the corner and him looking right at it when he describes the waterfall. You could look at it as him having a life threatening disease and him knowing his death is coming soon, which could also describe the way he views his past full of regret. If he knew the end is coming soon and he doesn't believe he fully lived his life to how he wishes, the regret is understandable and the cataract of death makes sense in this point of view. Overall, this poem shows the past, present, and future of the writer. His life is full of regret at points and then seems hopeful in others. This poem could be viewed in many ways but mostly you understand it as a man who wishes he could change his past because he knows his future is near and his life will soon be coming to an ... With the tragic society that Equality 7–2521 survives in, it not only proclaims the major conflicts in the story, but also passes along Ayn Rand's writing on how it contributes to expressing the conflicts even further. The prime conflict is individualism itself in a world that doesn't follow the philosophy of one's attributions to be upheld. It doesn't exist because of a society that sways the course of people's lives, coming in the way to maintain an atmosphere with no higher power than another. "We are one in all and all in one. Moreover, the style that Ayn Rand uses in her writing gives the readers the better awareness of how strict the society is that not even the narrator can speak and refer about himself. Contrasts between Zeffirelli and Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet There are many differences, large and small, between Zeffirelli and Luhrmann's version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. After seeing the first scene of both of these films, some notable contrasts became clear. The props used in both films differ greatly, in the 1967 version, very dated costumes were used, it looked like the director wanted a medieval style to be shown in the film judging by the costumes and props used. Real swords were drawn by the Capulet's and the Montague's as the play suggests but the fighting seemed quite unbelievable to a modern day viewer as did some of the stalls used in the small market surroundings. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The scenery in each play also differs greatly; the 1967 version is set in a medieval village with castles and a small market. Again its age shows as the buildings and backdrops look quite fake against the modern scenery in the 1997 film. Good lighting is used in the older film but again the newer one has realistic effects and buildings and overall has better quality scenery. In both films, certain lines are missed out or changed slightly; I think the language used is basically the same but in the market it was hard at times to hear what exactly was being said over all the noise of the villagers. Although Luhrmann did a good job of bringing modern props into the film, the language used in play sounded odd coming from modern people, dressed in modern clothes at a petrol station. So I think the older film did a better job with the language despite the hearing difficulty in some parts. The Acting quality was good in both films, but I found the style in the early 1967 version was boring and the fight scenes were slightly unbelievable. The 1997 version was more exciting and kept u interested but there wasn't really much between the two films in the quality of acting. Finally I looked at the different camera techniques used, it was interesting to see that both plays had shots of the legs or shoes of one of the families, Zeffirelli shot ... Interpretation of the Balcony Scene by Baz Luhrmann and Franco Zeffirelli of William Shakespreare's Romeo and Juliet "Romeo and Juliet" is a famous love story written by William Shakespeare. Two interpretations were made of this text into a film by the two directors, Baz Luhrmann (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli (1968). The films use different types of media to portray the characters and the overall context of Shakespeare's play. In action to this, Romeo climbs up the wall that leads to Juliet's balcony in order to get to her. The camera shot used is a close up of Romeo to show his emotional distress that he is feeling. The statues in this scene represent Juliet as a goddess and that she is very important, this is a key fact to remember in Romeo's eyes. This version is different to the text as Juliet does not say her famous lines from the balcony, but comes down from her room to the pool outside, where she recites her lines with passion thinking of her dear Romeo. In Zeffirelli's account of the film, Romeo is shown down below in the bushes whereas Juliet is the higher and more powerful person out of the two of them, and she is shown as the higher person sitting on the balcony. Both Romeo and Juliet are relatively young; especially Juliet because she is said to be thirteen. Also, it is important for the actors in the movies to be able to portray this youthful quality. Despite maturity being a desirable trait for many people, it is necessary for Juliet to be depicted as young and naïve. Franco Zeffirelli is capable of achieving this by casting Olivia Hussey. Acting well, Olivia was capable of playing the role of Juliet, as it would have been in the play. The authors will talk about how a computer–engineering firm produced the first prototypes of the "Arpanet," and how a group of men made the Internet as we know it today. It tells the intriguing story of how the technology for the Internet was devised. In many respects, it is very much a "behind–the–scenes" kind of documentary. When thinking about the Internet, one always appears to assume that the development of computer technology has been driven by a few giants of the industry. Indeed, we always assume that it is the big people that made it. And yet, the truth is very different. The authors show us how many of the developments surrounding the Internet were brought about with the support and often the leadership of the government. Indeed, it was the government funding that made a lot of these realities possible. Thus, this is basically a case study of what the development of networking achieved. In the book, we encounter the process of "packet switching," which is a technique in which a digital message is broken up into smaller "packets" that can be routed separately through a network to their destination. This is how the Internet was discovered. The two authors follow the story from the conception of the idea of "packet switching" in the early 1960s to the creation and development of the Internet. While it takes place in a futuristic society, the series explores issues that were widespread in the time of it's making. This includes one of the most prevalent issues of our time: racism. Thanks to the, at the time, radical philosophy of Gene Roddenberry, the show attracted a large audience. The adventurous and utopian society made many people hope for a future where prejudice was a thing of the past, and anyone could "boldly go where no man has gone before." After making such a lasting stamp on society, I am interested in learning how the Star Trek series allowed viewers to learn and accept the truth of uncomfortable social and personal matters within our society. In the 1960's, the Civil Rights Movement in the United States had finally gained ground and much progress had been made. However, segregation was still very prevalent in society. In an era when racism was extensive, Star Trek featured a racially diverse crew; this included Lieutenant Uhura, an African American woman in charge of Communications and Lieutenant Sulu an Asian helmsman. This revolutionary decision practically guaranteed that Star Trek would have a long lasting impression on viewers. The variations in the intonation, tones, and stage directions in the four different variations of the scene, show the viewer or the audience how differently they were created and how each director has different ideas about how it should look and sound. They show how the characters do have a rivalry with each other. During the fight, you could tell that each person had different directions to follow during the fight. Anthem was written by a woman named Ayn Rand, who escaped communism and strongly believed in the importance of individuality. Her views show up in both the surface meaning and the symbolic meaning of Anthem. In chapter one of Anthem, Equality 7–2521 finds an old subway tunnel, and the white glow of the iron tracks lead him to break the law even more than he already has by creating the light bulb. This leads to the death of his belief in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Two children from opposing families fall madly and irrationally in love. They run away, but Juliet is supposed to marry Paris. The plot is to escape by pretending Juliet is dead by using a potion, reviving her, and running away but the plan doesn't work and they kill themselves because they can't live without one another. In this play the setting plays an important role because the setting can be an extremely impact of a movie and even become a part of the story. It's the setting for all that is to come and even if it's one set on stage, it can convey so much about who the people are and the way they live. In telling the story of Romeo and Juliet, Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann use different methods and make different director choices to develop the setting in the story. Franco Zeffirelli is more effective because he does an excellent job on the setting because he makes look like a modern day. Here are three examples why it's effective, one reason is he adds a lot of flowers and candles around Juliet's bed which makes it look modern because it looks like it's taking place today because a lot of people take flowers. Another reason is the bed in which Juliet lays is set up high on the altar, it has stairs leading up to it which makes it look modern as well because it looks like when the corpse is in a funeral home. The final reason is that the pathway leading to Juliet is illuminated by the lit up candles which makes it look realistic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Similarities Between Anthem And Fahrenheit 451 Can you fathom a world where everything is peaceful and predetermined? The novella Anthem by Ayn Rand and the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury depict futures where everything is predetermined and violence, betrayal, and deception are virtually non–existent. In Anthem this dystopia puts humanity into a dark age, which halts evolution and progression. This digression of humanity is the result of Collectivist ideals as proposed throughout the novella, one instance is where Rand writes, "There is nothing to take a man's freedom away from him, save other men. To be free, a man must be free of his brothers. That is freedom. That and nothing else." (Rand, 70) These collectivist ways caused children to be raised in groups and taken to school until their group is appointed a job in their society, however this causes people to pursue careers that they detest and loath. ... • 31. Comparison of Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet Essay Comparison of Two Film Versions of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare's play 'Romeo and Juliet' was made into a film by two different directors. Baz Luhrmann's to Franco Zeffirelli's interpretation of Romeo and Juliet were very distinct and they both appeal to different age group audiences. Franco Zeffirelli's version was the first film of Romeo and Juliet. It was produced in 1968 and it was quiet typical, exactly what the audience would have expected the film of 'Romeo and Juliet' to be. Unlike Baz Luhrmann's version, which was very modern and appealed to a younger audience. Baz Luhrmann's and Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet are perfect examples of the very different perspectives you can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The lighting of the scenes were similar, as both films portrayed the scene as lively and exciting at the beginning. The only difference to the lighting is what was used to create the light. Franco Zeffirelli used traditional items such as candles and torches. Baz Luhrmann used modern items such as chandeliers and fireworks. The start of the party was similar in both films. Even though Franco Zeffirelli's version of the scene started noisily, Baz Luhrmann's was noisier. Another similarity were the camera angle shots. Both directors used a variety of camera shots, especially close up. Luhrmann's production, the close ups were helping build tension by showing both families feelings and facial expressions. Throughout the masked ball scene, there are a number of close ups on key characters. For example, when Tybalt recognises Romeo at the party and when Romeo and Juliet first set eyes on each other across the fish tank. Franco also uses close ups at these points of the scene. The setting of the two films are also very contrasting. Zeffirelli's production was set in Tuscany and Umbria because they were very authentic cities, which were a lot like the setting of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, would have been. However, the Luhrmann version of Romeo and Juliet was set in Mexico, Miami beach. This was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Comparing Film And Luhrmann's Film In Zeffirelli's film and Luhrmann's film, there are many similar elements as well as many different elements. Both the settings are based out side, make up is similar, cinematography has the same characters, and the acting is serious as well as dramatic in both films. Some things that were different are the costumes, props, and sounds. In Zeffirelli's film, the setting is outside in a village shopping type area with a fountain. Mercutio and Benvoleo see the Capulets coming there way. I think the reason why Zeffirelli decided to have them fight outside on the village area was because there are many people who can watch the fight see who killed who. In Luhrmann's film, the setting is at a beach, still filled with many people. Mercutio is sitting by the other Montagues when Tybalt and the other Capulets come there way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many layers to their clothes as the main color on top is the house colors blue and orange. For their pants, they are leggings. In Luhrmann's, the Montagues are wearing their tropical shirts with no under layers, and the Capulets are wearing all black, a bit more formal than the Montagues. The style costumes still represent who the two houses still are. Because of the different time settings, the outfits are anywhere near the same style. In both of the films, the actors had lots of dirt on their face from rolling around and fighting on the floor. In Zeffirelli's film there is less blood on Romeo's face and Tybalt's face, but in Luhrmann's film there is a lot more dirt and blood on Romeos face and shirt as well as Tybalts face and clothes. I think the reason why Luhrmann's film had a bit more blood, dirt, and more tears was to show how much Mercutio mean't to Romeo as a friend. In Zeffirelli's film there is less tears, blood, and tears but Romeo still shows how upset he is with Tybalt by his dramatic sword fighting and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. A kite is a victim Essay The Poem titled "A Kite is a victim" written by Leonard Cohen contains multiple tropes. Through my own analysis I propose that the author's central focus concerns life. Cohen discusses the relationships and accomplishes that we make throughout our lifetimes. In my opinion, the kite is a metaphor for the essence of life and living. Each of the four stanzas in the poem begins with a trope. In every case the tenor is the kite. These tropes will be analyzed with regard to the central theme of the poem. The first tenor that I will discuss can be found in the first line of the first stanza. Cohen writes: "A kite is a victim you are sure of". This is personification. Leonard Cohen uses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "A desperate trained falcon" would be a strong bird whose desperation has altered his independence. The kite or one's livelihood is like a desperate trained falcon in that life involves freedom and great strength but each individual must be trained as they conform to society's expectations. . "...In the high sweet air, and you can always haul it down..." It is always yours to control and possess. In the last trope in the first stanza is located in the ninth line: "to tame it in your drawer." This line represents a metaphor. The tenor is the taming of the falcon and the vehicle is the drawer. In my interpretation I believe that the drawer represents the confines of society. You cannot actually tame a falcon in a drawer but if the author is referring to the falcon as a person's independence and freedom in life then the drawer represents the natural conformity within society. "A kite is a fish you have already caught". This is a metaphor. Once again he makes an interesting comparison. The kite, being the central subject is the tenor of the trope and the fish already caught is the vehicle. In this case the kite is continuing to represent life. Cohen describes it as being something you already have, something you can never replace. There will never be another one coming along so you must take advantage of the one that you have been given. Cohen continues this stanza with positive advice. "so you play him carefully and long, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. A Few Days By Michael Cunningham The Hours, Michael Cunningham's telling of the lives of three women in the course of a few days, reveals how the simplicity of objects can give insight into the characters, just by the way they interact with them. His use of mirrors, water and flowers explain the disparities between Clarissa's, Virginia's, and Laura's lives suggesting that ultimately their weakness is themselves. The constant appearance of mirrors sheds light on superstition, helping us better understand Laura's connection with Mrs. Dalloway. She contemplates life and whether or not it is worth living. Constantly thinking about suicide creates a dark gloom over her that only leaves when she becomes truly free. A lot of her reasoning behind not killing herself is because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She does not allow herself to look into the mirror because "the mirror is dangerous; it sometimes shows her the dark manifestation of air that matches her body, takes her form, but stands behind, watching her, with porcine eyes and wet, hushed breathing." (Cunningham 30). By not looking into the mirror, she gives into the shadow's presence instead of facing it head on. This reflection of Virginia in the mirror seems to be her real self who she tries to hide because she fears facing her "dark side" thinking it will take over her normal self. Here "dark side" refers to her insanity. "Do not think of putrefaction or feces; do not think of the face in the mirror" (Cunningham 85). Virginia battles demons she cannot face alone but she still refuses to ask for help. She feels apprehensive about her ability to write well so she does not look in the mirror, since she might catch sight of the shadow that will disturb her writing. Donald Winnicott, psychoanalyst in the field of object relations theory, depicts suicide "as involving a fantasy of destroying bad aspects of the self with the remainder of the self surviving, or as a destruction of the entire self when the true self is threatened with exploitation or annihilation" (Winnicott 779). Virginia feels both exploited and annihilated when she encounters the shadow that is actually her, so through psychoanalysis the motive for her suicide becomes clear: escape from the monster that is emerging. • 35. The Importance Of Modernism In Literature Modernism, a constantly debated term, is a philosophical movement that emerged during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, following World War I. Painters, writers, and musicians did not however perceive it just as a period in time, rather as a "commitment to experimentation in techniques, freedom in ideas, originality in perceptions, and self–examination in emotions" (Baughman, Bondi, Layman...etc,1) Writers, for example, like James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Ernest Hemingway broke away from the traditional and conventional techniques to create their own literary voice. Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Woolf's Jacob's Room, and Hemingway's In Our Time each exemplify distinctive styles in ideology, art, culture, and politics which eventually became what the modernist movement, also known as the avant–garde, appertained to. While their childhood's affected their writing, Hemingway's minimalistic technique of composition in In Our Time, and Joyce and Woolf's prolific amount of attention to detail in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Jacob's Room affected the growth of the modernist movement. Virginia Woolf and James Joyce's similar upbringing shaped them into the people they are today. English modernist writer and critic, Adeline Virginia Stephen, commonly acknowledged as Virginia Woolf, was born on January 25, 1882 in London, England and died on March 28, 1941. Woolf was born into a typical Victorian family, where the father of the family was the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Summary Of Ayn Rand's Anthem To rule, a ruler needs control. It is the cornerstone of any society with a leader. The society Ayn Rand creates in Anthem is no exception. In Anthem, the rules in the society depicted by Rand exist for control, and were initially created for equality but spiraled out of control into a world built on collectivism and backward teachings. The society Prometheus, or Equality, envisions in the final chapters of the novella would never have any of the rules in his past society, as he realizes through his journey that they are evil and damaging. The Unmentionable Times turned into the society we see in Anthem through giving up freedom for the sake of equality. A high school teacher mailed Rand her students' questions about the novella, ... • 37. The Hours Theme Michael Cunningham's "The Hours" tells the story of three women, each from different eras of society, yet connected through the internal conflicts which they face. Laura Brown, one of the novel's three protagonists, lives the white middle–class American dream. However, throughout the novel her mental health begins to deteriorate due to the oppressive lifestyle which she feels society has forced upon her. The Virginia Woolf portrayed by Cunningham, was in fact historically accurate to the original Virginia Woolf. Wolf struggled with mental illness throughout her lifetime and the idea of breaking the mold of traditional women's roles. Unlike Laura Brown and Virginia Woolf, Clarissa Vaughn enjoys all of the freedoms which the late twentieth century allows, but is still left questioning if her life of a conventional wife and mother is lacking something. Character, to some extent is determined by destiny, however, when society places limitations on an individual's free will, it will always create a desire to break away from the mold. Above all other characters in "The Hours", Laura Brown challenges her destiny like no other. The post–war society of America in the 1950s clearly defined the roles in which women were expected to fill. Unlike most of the women which share her similar suburban lifestyle, Laura feels dissatisfied with her life consisting of solely marriage and motherhood. Throughout the course of the novel, Laura searches for an escape from this traditional way of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Lakota Summary This week of class was very interesting once again. We watched several films, read our first book, and had some class discussions. These three things provided me with a great deal of information on the 1975 FBI shooting at Pine Ridge and on Native American/American Indian myths and legends. In the films Incident at Oglala and Murder on a Reservation, I learned a great deal about the 1975 FBI shooting at Pine Ridge and have developed my own opinion about the incident. I learned that on June 26, 1975 two FBI agents, Ronald Williams and Jack Coler, followed a red pick–up truck onto the Jumping Bull Ranch. They were out on the reservation to serve a warrant, but they were in unmarked cars so the Native American/American Indians feared that it was an attack and began shooting. • 39. Mrs Dalloway Character Analysis Virginia Woolf expressed herself through her characters. Her mental health and private life are shown very clear through Septimus Warren Smith, the main Character in Mrs. Dalloway. He is a war veteran who suffers from PTSD. Woolf is an author who suffers from many mental breakdowns throughout her life. In Mrs. Dalloway, Septimus and Woolf are connected through their mental state because they both hear things and struggle to connect to the world around them. Virginia Woolf is thought to have bipolar II disorder. As a young child, her eldest brother sexually abused her. She had three major breakdowns and was hospitalized for one of them. She endured many deaths in her early years. The Sudden death of her mother in 1895 and two years later the death of half–sister, Stella, in 1897, lead to Woolf's first mental breakdown from ages 13–16 (Woolf). Later in her early adult years, her father passed away in 1904 and 1907 her beloved brother, Thoby, passes away; these deaths caused her second breakdown (Woolf). In 1913,less than a year after being married, she falls into her third and final mental breakdown (Woolf). Woolf was said to never fully recover from her 1913 mental breakdown. During the years of 1910–1913, Woolf sent on a 'rest cure' in Twickenham to a private nursing home for women with nervous conditions (Woolf). Before the final downfall of Virginia she was on her way to becoming a well–known author. She was apart of the Bloomsbury group. A quote from her famous book Mrs. Dalloway, " It achieves it is the vision of reality through the reception by Mrs. Dalloway's mind of what Virginia Woolf called those myriad impressions– trivial fantastic, evanescent or engraved with the sharpness of steel" ("Virginia Stephen Woolf"). Although people raved about her novels, she could never feel the joy in her success. In 1915 as was recorded to be considered her good years, happily married, publishes her first novel, Leonard and Woolf have plans to make their own printing press (Woolf).
