1. The camera shot type used in this part of the video, is
called a ‘wide shot’, as it typically shows the entire
human figure (Katy Perry) and is intended to place it in
some relation to its surroundings, because Katy Perry
stands in the middle of a jungle, near a waterfall.
Mise-en-scene in this part of the video, shows the subject’s
(Katy Perry’s costume. The particular scene conforms to our
expectations of gender representations of females in the
media, as even though, Katy Perry is shown as being strong and
independent, because the shot is taken from a low angle,
emphasising that she is standing tall and confident, she is still
shown as being ‘girly’ and ‘neat’. This is because she is wearing
a colourful skirt, with a crop top, all shown to be made with
leaves, etc. In addition, her outfit displays a lot of skin/flesh,
due to her wearing a skirt and a crop top with a low neckline,
therefore this, shows her as coming across as being ‘girlish’ and
feminine, which conforms to our expectations of gender
representations of females in the media, as usually women are
seen as being a ‘sex object’ and being rather feminine and
ladylike. However, her body language and posture shows her as
coming across as being a confident and independent women,
which subverts from our expectations of the representation of
women in the media.
The use of a wide shot type, complemented well
with this scene, as the viewer is now able to see
the location/setting of the video, as the
surroundings of Katy Perry are shown clearly in a
wide frame, with more of a view of the jungle,
showing the leaves, trees and the waterfall,
which are typical objects that tend to be in a
jungle.
