1. The tagline of the poster tries to set the genre of
the film, it also makes the viewer wonder what the
‘thing’ is which keeps them in suspense. Also by
saying ‘thing’ it shows us that it is non-human. This
starts to define the genre of the film as being sci-fi.
Also the word ‘us’ suggests that it is the people of
the city. In addition the colour of this text blends in
well with the colours of the poster and its
presentation.
The statue of liberty is the first thing the
viewer sees, this is because it is the most
shocking image in the poster, it also poses
questions like ‘how did this happen?’ It also
shows the viewer where the film is set,
obviously New York as the statue of Liberty is
the icon of New York. Furthermore with the
burning buildings in the background it suggests
that an attack has happened, possibly denoting
that it is a thriller film.
The dominant colours of the poster and blue and
green, the blue is quite misty and murky, this
could be from the destruction. The green in the
poser is similar to the statue of liberty which is
the main attraction of the poster. Also the colour
of green is Iconic to aliens which could suggest
this alien theme.
2. The logo of the film has a blurred effect,
this hints the genre of sci-fi as it has an
extra-terrestrial feel to it, it also has a
slight green tint, this again relates to the
colours used in the poster. The lightness of
the text could refer to beams of lights
which are conventional to the alien, sci-fi
genre and the distortion of the text could
symbolise how the city has been distorted
because of the destruction. The font itself
is large and easy to read therefor capturing
the viewers attention easily.
The target audience for this film would
be older teens and adults, perhaps
between 15 to 40. Under this age bracket
children could find it too scary due to the
realistic images, however older than 30
could find it to be a bit too unrealistic.
Beneath the poster in small font further
information is provided such as release
date, website URL and actors, this allows
people to find out more about the film
and get them more excited about it.
