Situational analysis
The discussion focuses on the impact of education on children.
In it, however, the audience is mainly adults of different ages
who are attending the lecture by Ken. From the analysis, it is
clear that the audience can be grouped into from young adults to
the older adults. The lecture indeed took place in the morning
hours. It is evident from the greeting of Ken to the audience.
The lively interactive session is among the TED recordings in
the year two thousand and six. The main purpose of the draft is
to look at the argument that is brought about by Ken on the
effects of education on the creativity of children. He tries to
bring about some of the scenarios that happen in the educational
sector in an open and humorous manner. The draft gives some
of the different alternatives that have been proposed by Ken. He
believes that there are other alternatives that are better than
education
Do schools kill creativity?
In writing, an audience can be defined as anyone to whom the
writing is intended. In his speech, Ken Robinson uses humor to
engage the audience in an interactive discussion. The speech he
delivers is more understandable because he understood his
target audience, i.e. he understands what the audience knows
and what the audience doesn’t know. He also engages the
audience by asking questions such as “Why don’t we get the
best out of people?” (Robinson). Ken describes to the audience
how education has swept away the creativity out of children
using jokes, anecdotes, taglines and quotes making clear his
messages. Through his style of audience engagement, it is quite
easy to describe the audience at various levels.
In this case, Ken Robinson’s target audience includes a group of
parents with children attending primary or secondary schools,
colleges, and universities. They want a safer and a more
appropriate way of nurturing their children to become
responsible adults. These parents have spent a lot of money to
educate their children complicated courses that they end up
dropping. The speech focuses on an alternative that parents
should employ to nurture creativity in their children by
encouraging them to put more effort on their God given talents.
This is estimated to be cheaper compared to the conventional
education that is the standard practice.
The audience is typically parents aging from 25 to 45. They are
either married or single parents who want the best for their
children. The audience is averagely middle-class citizens with
at least a diploma level of education with most having a college
level of education. The educational standard of the audience can
be estimated by their understanding of the quotes that the
speaker employs to drive his point home. For example, when he
describes that all elements on earth are equally important and
quoting from Jonas Salk, who once said, "If all the insects were
to disappear from the Earth, within 50 years all life on Earth
would end. If all human beings disappeared from the Earth,
within 50 years all forms of life would flourish," (Robinson).
The audience understands the speaker and asks no questions
concerning the whole speech.
The audience is knowledgeable about the current system of
education and interested in finding the best alternative for it.
They have tried the conventional system and realized the need
for a substitute in the education system. They have tried
everything to build the future of their children but still no
change has been seen. They express their need for a change in
the system by applauding the speaker when he makes important
remarks. They know a lot about the importance of embracing
the conventional educational system but due to the increasing
level of unemployment in the country, they find it better to
introduce creativity into the traditional system.
These parents are drawing the idea that a new system needs to
be introduced that cultures the creativity of their children. They
acknowledge the fact that due to the increasing demands of the
job market, there is a need to introduce an environmentally
friendly system that puts in consideration the current national
job demands.
The audience is in dire need of a new way of ensuring that their
children get the best out of their creativity besides the quality
conventional education that they pay for. They need something
that will work for the future of their children.
The audience can be described as persuadable. This can be
demonstrated by the way they applaud the speaker when he
makes important remarks. The speech delivered by the speaker
is a persuasive speech, and it moved a large fraction of the
audience. The audience is shown to move along the speaker in
everything that the speaker proposes as an alternative to the
conventional education. The speech addresses the busy parents
who work hard to see that their children gain from their hard
work. The particular needs that are addressed are the need to
introduce methods that improve the creativity of children in the
schools who are learning by the current system of education.
This improves what the students gain from the little expenditure
that the parents invest in their studies.
The audience is empirical, and the speaker appreciates the kind
attention that he is given. The unified response that the speaker
receives from the audience shows that the audience is interested
in the message delivered by the speaker. The audience laughs in
unison indicating that they have an idea about the speaker’s
themes.
