In chapter twelve, Snarr talks breakdown the global issue of health. The chapter broadens the
definition of healthcare to not only just fighting off diseases, but also takes the well being of human
being into consideration. The major problems we encounter today in the world are in nutritional
health, infectious diseases, reproductive health, and mental health issues. The chapter also breaks
down each major problem and how it might have different effects based on the regions, and the role
of education in healthcare. We see throughout the chapter how problems affect the developed
countries and the developing countries differently. Finally, the chapter shows the success of
treatment and the ongoing battle that the world is dealing with today.
Nutritional health according to Snarr has different objectives for example; N. America wants to
achieve a trans–fat free food, while Africa and S. America people are undernourished. For our
chapter, good nutrition means having good amounts of proteins, vitamins, fats, minerals, and
calories to have good health and growth. Food security is explained as ability to get and keep food
which depends on the amount of land for farming and the population of a region. Political conflicts,
disease, welfare, and climate are major factors that affect food security. Undernutrition is a key

The purpose of this article is to bring awareness to the increasing health effects global warming and
climate change have on humans. In addition, to encourage readers to consider that by reducing the
effects of global warming, they are by default improving public health. Going off of that, it's evident
that the authors intended audience is people in the medical field because in the article she addressed

The poor of Guaymas relied on this clinic for some of life's essentials, and this clinic was willing
and enthusiastic to help them. This relationship inspired me to learn more about Guaymas's
healthcare system and its willingness to assist the poor, leading me to volunteer in a free EMS
service and a public hospital during future trips to my father's hometown.
As I continued visiting Guaymas and participating in institutions that provided its citizens medical
assistance, I gained a deeper appreciation of all the factors that made this connection possible. I
became conscious of the education, the technology, and the opportunities that the providers were

underdeveloped and areas that need to achieve equality in healthcare. Throughout the world,
countries have shown their power by healthcare, government, economy and technology. By doing

Global Health Critical Reflection
Health is a complex concept, and global health adds to this complexity. When I think of health as a
concept, I view it as being absent of disease. This understanding is a very biomedical approach to
health and is a very narrow viewpoint of health. According to the World Health Organization (1948),
health is defined as a "state of complete physical, mental and social well–being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity" (a cited by Jacobsen p. 2). This definition does give a better
understanding of what health is from a broader perspective. At the University of Victoria's Global
Health class, I have become to understand better the WHO's definition and that it is linked to the
social determinants of health. In this paper, I will reflect and analyze the learning that occurred for
myself while taking the Global Health class, and how this knowledge has helped my nursing

Global health refers to all aspects of a system concerning health. It takes into account history and
political economy to help us understand "the skewed distributions of wealth and illness around the
globe" (Farmer). Medical anthropologists studying in this field analyze the contributions by such
factors and work to solve health problems with "an interdisciplinary approach" (Farmer). Describing
the forces that cause millions each year to fall ill to Malaria, a preventable and treatable disease,
requires what Farmer calls a biosocial approach – analyzing how changing social structures that

cardiovascular infections. Wildfires also account for increased fatalities.
Vector–borne infectious disease: As the climate changes, temperatures increase, and precipitation
levels rise, causing species patterns to change, such as those of mosquitos and ticks. In addition, it
too introduces new pests and pathogens into new regions, such as the Zika virus, which has shown
to be fatal to the human population.
