2. Advertising is to advertise a image that best sells a product.
This is used in things like food such as McDonalds, kfc, nandos
and other food industry’s to show people the types of food
they sell and attract people to buy it.
Promotional photography is similar to advertising although it
is used to advertise things associated with people like, events,
bands and football teams.
These are often heavily edited to make it look the best it can
so with food they will make it all be put together to perfection
but in reality when you buy one it will look thrown together
and sloppy artificial light will be used often to give it a better
effect.
What type of lenses could be used?
The type of lens that could have been used for these
images are..
The lens depends on the type of things you are advertising
so for a car you might use a wide lens as it is a large object
where as for something like food you would use a
telephoto lens to capture it up close.
This affects the image because..
If you was to use a telephoto lens on the car you would
only be getting a small part of it in the shot
The purpose of using this lens is to..
The purpose is to capture the full idea of what you are
advertising and make sure it looks its best to use for the
advertisement.
My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that..

3. Image control
Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why..
This image is a controlled photo taken for clothing advert
as he is posed and it is taken to create the right photo to
represent the clothing brand/collection.
Is this image observational or candid? Explain why..
The first image is observation and candid because it is
supposed to represent he is a person going about his
daily business but it is staged to make it look like its just
a random guy when it is actually advertising the clothing
Lighting Techniques
For the images on the left, the use of..
Lighting could potentially be artificial using lamps to
create the best lighting on the top photo to get it perfect
to display the clothing, but it is in a natural environment
outside so therefore could potentially be ambient light
the second image has been taken in a small studio style
environment with a white background. Having the white
background will make the light bound around naturally
and give of a lot of ambient light but there would still
probably be some staged lights to make sure they get it
lighting up the right parts of the product.

4. Post-Production
Does post production take place? Explain why, alongside
your justification
Yes post production does take place as the image was
taken as tomatoes stacked up like the bottle and through
Photoshop is was masked to make it appear to look like
the Heinz bottle with the labels on. Tools on Photoshop
were probably used to get rid of patches and marks on
the tomatoes so that they didn’t look horrible and put
people off. The burn tool was probably used to add more
shadowing to the image and the shadow of the actual
bottle where as the use of the dodge tool is most likely
used to lighten the side in which the light is hitting the
bottle.

Alex Howe is a photographer from London that has been
photographing professionally for 10 years in 2007 he won the
AOP Fuji Superstition Competition. His main specialty is
photographing cars as seen above although he has a passion
for shooting animal.
He has worked with many big companies while shooting cars
and here are some of them, Bugatti / Mini / Aston Martin /
BMW / Bentley / Rolls Royce / Renault / Ford / Red Bull

What contexts could this image be seen?
This image can be seen in places of advertisement
like; magazines, internet, TV, billboards and more. To
show of the product- advertise it to the audience
and to sell the product.
The advantages of photographing in this style are..
It catches the audiences attention because it is a
crisp bold image that clearly shows what the
photographer and brand is trying to show and
advertise to people.
Disadvantages of photographing in this style are..
Disadvantages of using this style is it does catch your
eye but not as much as other products out there that
have a lot going on in the background to represent or
to draw the attention to the product. If this company
used things or people that would make people want
to buy this drink (role model) it would attract more
people.
Things I like about the image are..
I like the way the image is crisp and clean, it is a
simple image but very affective in the way these
colours contrast against the plain white
background to really pop out and catch the
audiences eye.
6. It is categorised by..
Fashion photography is used to sell and advertise new
clothing and promote clothing brands.
It will usually be displayed through magazines, online clothes
websites, billboards and large print outs in store. A lot of
editing is used in fashion photography and lots of artificial
lighting as clothing adverts and shoots the potential places
these photos could be taken would be a set that reflects the
clothing so if it was clothing for a younger audience they
could set it in some urban styled set. Or the photos could just
be taken in a basic set with a background that contrasts on
the thing they are wearing. So if the model was wearing black
or dark colour a light background would be chosen.
What type of lenses could be used?
The type of lens that could have been used for these images
are..
A wide lens could be used for the first photo A portrait lens or
medium telephoto lens would be used to take most of the
photos as it would capture the clothing in more detail for the
people that would like to see its little details.
The image because if it hadn't captures this detail people
might be put of it because they might not like the detail when
they get to see it up close.
The purpose of using this lens is to..
Capture the full body so everyone can see everything that is
worn in the outfit and how it fits.
My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that..
It is very classy and adds some sophistication to the image.

7. Image control
Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain
why..
This image is controlled and manipulated the model
is clearly posed in this street and that way it is
manipulated is how it looks like it has some sort of
filter on top as you can see that the sky is dark from
the top. Burn tools would probably have been used
to darken the trees and background objects.
Is this image observational or candid? Explain why..
This image is observational as the model is clearly
posing for the image but is taken to try and look
candid as if the person is going about his daily
business.
Lighting Techniques
For the images on the left, the use of..
This image has clearly used artificial lighting as the
photo is taken in a studio and it gets a clear shadow
on the white background, this was most likely done
on purpose to give the photo more character and to
give a contrast between the model.
Where as the first image looks like most of the
lighting was natural as it is taken in a environment
where artificial lighting might not be available.

8. Post-Production
Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside
your justification
Yes post production is taken place it looks like it has a dark
faint yellow filter on top and the way they have added a glare
at the back of the model has drawn all the attention to the
model and the clothing that is being sold and advertised.
Tools like dodge could have been used to add a glow to his
face to yet again draw the audience attention to the main
focal point of the image.

the same type of thing, this would be for fashion.

What contexts could this image be seen?
These images could be seen in news papers,
magazines, online clothing brands and TV. It will be
shown through these to advertise these products.
The advantages of photographing in this style are..
It shows of the clothes in the best way to attract the
audience in and make them want to buy them to
look as good as these people in the images.
Sometimes the models in the photo can be famous
people which people are inspired by and want to
follow their trend.
Disadvantages of photographing in this style are..
The disadvantage of photographing in this style is it
people might prefer to see clothes on people which
are more normal and not manipulated to look
imperfect.
Things I like about the image are..
I like the way the photographer chose a
background to contrast against the model and
clothing to draw the attention more to the
clothing as it stands out over the background.
10. It is categorised by..
Photo journalism is categorised by the news media usually on
things such as war, sport and paparazzi. Editing and
manipulating images is a big problem in the news media
because then any stories can be altered and false information
could be given out to readers/viewers. Some people thinks
small tweaks are acceptable but other strongly suggest that
there should be no post production in news stories.
What type of lenses could be used?
The type of lens that could have been used for these images
are..
This image would have been taken using a telephoto lens as it
would probably have been taken from a distance.
The second image would have been a wide angled lens to
capture what is happening in the image.
This affects the image because..
With the first image if the photographer had used a wide
angle lens he wouldn’t have been able to capture the
emotions in the face.
The purpose of using this lens is to..
Capture things close up to capture emotions and facial
expressions.

Is this image observational or candid? Explain why..

was captured through cameras of many spectators
observing the event.
Lighting Techniques
For the images on the left, the use of..
As the photos are taken live in events that cant be staged
the images are usually taken from the use of natural light
or the use of the flash from the camera.
The second image was naturally lighted from the sun.

12. Post-Production
Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside
your justification
No I don’t think this would incorporate post production as it is
a news article and people find it wrong to change and
manipulate images because it would give off false information
to readers and viewers.
I think this would be the same through all photojournalism as
people would have the same views that if it was manipulated
it would be changing the story and be fake and wrong.
Photographers in the field..
How has past photographers have used this style?
Other photographers have used similar styles to display
images of photojournalism or even for portrait images to
make them look candid.
Choose an artist and write a short biography
Henri Cartier Bresson was born on August 22, 1908 in
Chanteloup, France. He Is a big name in photojournalism and
has covered big stories such as the Spanish civil war and the
French uprisings.
This style of photography would appear..
In different news articles or magazine articles to give a image
to a story that is being told.
13. Archetype Image
What contexts could this image be seen?
Images like this could be seen through a few different ways
such news paper articles, online news articles or through the
news on the TV these are all sources that are easily accessed
by the public and that’s what the images are to taken for, to
share with people and inform them.
The advantages of photographing in this style are..
The advantages of this is that you get to travel the world and
see lots of different events that are happening.
Photojournalism is also a good source of income as people
which takes part in it usually are professionals and have
established a career in photojournalism.
Disadvantages of photographing in this style are..
The stories that you are covering can often be disturbing.
Another disadvantage is that you cant have your own touch
on the images they all have to be true to the events and have
to be clean and visible.
Things I like about the image are..
I really liked this image because it shows the lengths the
photographers are going to for this shot of the man
holding the gun and they all wanted to capture the same
moment.
14. It is categorised by..
Portraiture is used mainly to take images of the the

15. Image control
Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why..
These images are mostly controlled as they would be taken in
studios with all the technical equipment to take a nice clean
images with the perfect lighting most likely artificial to get the
image consistent all the way through.
Is this image observational or candid? Explain why..
Portraiture is never really observation or candid as they are
images the are requested to be taken and the main object
mostly a person is always aware they are having their photo
taken.
Lighting Techniques
For the images on the left, the use of..
Lighting techniques used in this style is mostly artificial as
they are often in studios that are dimly lit so they the
photographer would use lights to get the perfect lighting that
they are wanting.
16. Post-Production
Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside
your justification
Yes post production often takes place in portraiture
photography as the images are taken for clients and if they
had blemishes when the images are taken they wouldn’t want
seen on a photo that would more than likely be on display.
Things like contrast, levels and sharpness is also changed to
give the image more quality and to make it more clean.
Photographers in the field..
How has past photographers have used this style?

17. Archetype Image
What contexts could this image be seen?
This type of imagery could be seen in homes mostly as it is
the type of personal imagery that a client would keep to them
selves but photographers could also ask permission to use
these photos in portfolios of online photo sharing websites.
The advantages of photographing in this style are..
The advantage of this is that it establishes a good source of
income if people like your style also this type of photography
is mainly focused and set in studios so you don’t have to
worry about weather and lighting issues.
Disadvantages of photographing in this style are..
It is very hit and miss when it comes to getting a career in
portraiture as there is many competitors that’s style people
might prefer to yours.
You don’t have as much freedom with images as you might do
with architecture as you mostly are just taking images of
faces.
Things I like about the image are..
I like the contrast and the way this image shows what type of
character the man is just by a photo and I like how this is
shown through most of portraiture images.
18. It is categorised by..
This is categorised from different types of family photos such
as; weddings, family occasions/family portraits, individual
photo shoots baby portraits. People get these done so that
they can have them as memory usually done for special
occasions. These will then be displayed on big canvas’ or small
print outs to keep in albums.
Photographers might also use these to build a portfolio to
attract other clients.
What type of lenses could be used?
The type of lens that could have been used for these images
are..
Telephoto lens would be used for high street images and
portraits
Wide angles could also be used if the object which is being
taken of Is multiple people like a family.
This affects the image because..
Because you'd need a bigger field of view so if you was to take
a picture of a family you would have to use a wide angle to
capture them all. And for a individual person you could use a
telephoto lens.
The purpose of using this lens is to..
The purpose is to capture all the people wanted into the
picture
High Street Studio
19. Image control
Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why..
These images are all taken controlled as these people you are
taking pictures of have requested these images and are aware
they are being taken.
Is this image observational or candid? Explain why..
Although these images are controlled the style that some
photographers use could be for the family or person to pose
naturally in a candid way like they would with their family on
a daily basis this isn't used a lot but still is incorporated
sometimes.
Lighting Techniques
For the images on the left, the use of..
The lighting for this style is always artificial controlled light
this is because these images are taken indoors and you don’t
get to control where the light is coming from and this is why
high street photographers use artificial lighting when taking
their images so that they have full control of where the
lighting hits the main object.
20. Post-Production
Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside
your justification
Post production can quite often take place in high street
studio photography, like in portraiture the people in the
images could have spots or blemishes that would need
removing through Photoshop. Things like contrast and
sharpening could take place to make the images look sharp
and clean.
Photographers in the field..

What contexts could this image be seen?
High street studio photography could be seen in different
contexts one could personal use in print outs for homes. It
could also be used for things like advertising clothing so
would go on to billboards, magazines and online.
The advantages of photographing in this style are..
The advantage of photographing in this style is you are
always working indoors in a controlled environment so you
have the tech to be able to control the scene with lighting or
objects. Another advantage Is being indoors you have access
to equipment such as artificial lighting that is used a lot in this
type of photography.
This also benefits you because the weather never effects you
and shooting times.
With high street photography you can have your own unique
style.
Disadvantages of photographing in this style are..
The disadvantage of having your own style is that people
might not like that style and wont want you taking images of
them therefore losing out on money.
With you being confined indoors you don’t have much room
to experiment with different styles and ideas.
Things I like about the image are..
I like this image because the photographer has
really brought through their happiness with each
other. This creates a nice feeling to the image.
22. It is categorised by..
Is categorised into fine art and usually could be seen in
galleries, homes or online photo galleries. The most common
working use for these images are in things like brochures or
by estate agents for selling and advertising houses. These can
also implement small bits of digital manipulation to make the
houses or building look more attractive than they would with
dark dim settings. Things that could take part are sky
replacements.
What type of lenses could be used?
The type of lens that could have been used for these images
are..
Wide lens’ could be used for these types of photos because it
would get the whole subject into the image clearly and would
also give space to give a representation of the setting and
area in the background/foreground. Tilt shift lens could also
be used to fix the lines in the image which aren't parallel
which leads to the vantage point this prevents building giving
the effect that is falling over.
This affects the image because..
If you had used a telephoto lens you would be concentrating
on one spot and more detailed sections of the building that
you are photographing
The purpose of using this lens is to..
Capture the full subject that you are looking to get a image of.
My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that..
Architectural
23. Image control
Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why..
This image could potentially have been manipulated to
change things that the photographer might have wanted to
change such as the brightness or saturation. There could have
also been some sky replacement to get the perfect backdrop
to the building and this unique main focal point.
Is this image observational or candid? Explain why..
This image is observational as it is just capturing things as it
happens like the people stood around the object in this
square.
Lighting Techniques
For the images on the left, the use of..
Both of the images to the left would have used natural
ambient light as they are taken from some distance so
artificial light would be insignificant and unusable from this
distance.
The natural light comes in from different directions but is still
used in the same way.
24. Post-Production
Photographers in the field..
Yes I think post production did take place in multiple point
in these photos. The photo to the right could potentially
have been cropped down just to have the geometric
shapes on display rather than concentrating on the
background or foreground. It could have also had changes
to the brightness or saturation to bring the colours out.
The second image in the bottom left looks like the sky
could have been manipulated to make it look more
appealing and attractive it also could have been put in by
sky replacement. In this image contrast and levels could
have also been used as well as sharpening to bring out the
shades of colours and black and whites to giving some
range to the building and more detail.

What contexts could this image be seen?
This style of imagery could be seen in fine art to display them
in homes and art galleries. They could also be possibly seen in
high end photography magazines other ways that they could
be seen is in portfolios or social sharing websites.
The advantages of photographing in this style are..
The advantages of this is you get to travel around the world
and see lots of different places and interesting buildings. With
architectural photography people have their own styles and
there are plenty of ways to have your own unique styles.
If you focus on interior architecture you get the power to
control more things than you could in outdoor architecture
photography such as lighting.
Disadvantages of photographing in this style are..
Big disadvantages of this style of photography is that it is a lot
of outdoor work therefore is controlled by the weather so you
cant decide when you want sunny skies. This will then make
your images dull if you have the unwanted weather.
Things I like about the image are..
I like the way the photographer has used leading lines to
make our eyes instantly spiral down as we look at the image
I also like how he managed to capture lots of different
shades throughout the image.

Illustrations are used in various different media methods and
seen in different places they can often be seen magazines
showing off products or people. Illustrations can also be seen
in books one big one that includes lots of illustrations is this
Guinness book of records which displays hundreds of
illustrations specified to the record that will be on that page.
Another type of book that you would often see illustrations in
is wildlife or nature books that contain records of different
species inside.
What type of lenses could be used?
The type of lens that could have been used for these images
are..
The type of lens’ that could be used in illustrations really
depends on what the thing is that you are photographing, so
if you was doing some wildlife photography you might choose
a telephoto lens. Or if it was a bigger subject like a group
photo then you'd use a wide angle lens.
My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that..

Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why..

Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside
your justification
Post production can often occur to do small changes to the
images that will be used as illustrations such as sharpening of
the images and also contrast to make the images just a bit
more clean and neat looking this wont take place in all the
images as some like the Guinness book of records will like to
keep the story straight.

What contexts could this image be seen?
You could find illustrations in all sorts of different contexts
like, magazines you would find a lot all the way through
certain magazines like fashion, tech or wildlife magazines.
You could also find them online in similar categories to these.
Illustrational photography can be found in many books the
best example of this is a nature book.
Also illustrational images could be used as stock images
where people buy the rights to your image used for business
or personal use.
The advantages of photographing in this style are..
The advantages of this is that you could earn money from
doing something you enjoy another advantage is that you can
have your own style and that is what will attract people.
Also you have flexibility to choose whether you want to work
and shoot outside or inside depending on the requirements.
Disadvantages of photographing in this style are..
•Doesn’t always provide a income if you don’t take the image
which somebody is looking for
•Generally have to keep a image standard and not really
change much so you are limited to a clean image.
Things I like about the image are..
30. It is categorised by..
Fine art could be categorised by personal use for in
homes or private places. It could also be seen in
galleries by thousands of people another category
similar to this is portfolios or online sharing websites
these are like shrunk down more accessible types of
galleries which gives more people the chance to view
them.
What type of lenses could be used?
The type of lens that could have been used for these images
are..
Depending on which style you are concentrating on,
wide for landscape fine art pieces or telephoto for
nature you could use a wide lens for architecture
another less used lens could also be a tilt shift lens.
Fine Art
31. Image control
Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why..
Yes this image is controlled and is probably taken place in a
studio as the model is posed in a way in which the
photographer would have asked.
Is this image observational or candid? Explain why..
The image I think is observational as the photographer is just
taking a photo of this model in a shape and she/he is aware
that the image is being taken.
Lighting Techniques
For the images on the left, the use of..
For this image the photographer has used some sort of
artificial lighting to create shading of the man in the
background on to the white backdrop. I don’t think he tried to
focus the lighting on the woman at the front and tried to keep
it natural.
32. Post-Production
Does post production take place? Explain why, alongside your
justification
Yes post production does take place to manipulate this image
to the right to make it sharper and to make all the colours in
the image stronger and stand out more. Other things have
potentially been done is burning in shadows on the trees the
same tool would be used to add a darkness to the clouds and
lighten certain parts of it. There will also so be use of some
tool to enhance the reflection of the image in the lake. It
makes the image more eye catching.
Photographers in the field..
How has past photographers used this style?
Other photographers have used this style to create a calm and
relaxed feel to the photo when people look at it.

You can make a living through this style of work like I just said

Disadvantages of photographing in this style are..

to anyone then you are going to have a hard time selling it
and making a living from it.
If you are going to do indoor fine art then you are more than
likely going to need a really big studio which could potentially
be a very big expense if you are making no money in the first
pace, this is why more and more fine art photographers and
high street studio photographers are turning garages or
unused rooms into studios.
Things I like about the image are..
I really like his image because It is just a ordinary forest but
they have over edited the image to give it this gloomy dying
haunted forest with a nice contrast between the bright green
grass/moss and the black and grey surroundings.

capturing real emotion between the three men.

This image I think is both candid and observational as the
photographer hasn’t manipulated anything that is happening
in the image.
Lighting Techniques
For the images on the left, the use of..
Natural lighting would have been the only lighting the
photographer used for this image as he is out of his studio
and artificial lighting would be hard to provide also you can
just tell it is natural because the image is actually quite dimly
lit.
36. Post-Production
Does post production take place? Explain why, alongside your
justification
Yes I think a slight bit of post production could take place to
Make the images sharper and aesthetical things just to make
the image look better but I don’t think they would fully
manipulate the images to look like how they would want as
these images are very often used for photo journalism and
people want to see the real images.
