The preparation for actual teaching will
not be complete if the teacher does not include
two important activities in actual teaching, that
of conducting the recitation and the use of
questions in the classroom. Even in college, the
teacher must plan for recitations. This plan
necessarily must include his ability to frame
questions which he will use in the recitation.
In an atmosphere conducive
to exchange of ideas,
tolerance, respect, and
consideration of the
thoughts of others.

Students should be taught
how to regard the feelings
and opinions of others.

The purposes of the
recitation can only be
achieved

the ability to accept others’
ideas,
Students should develop
open- mindedness,

This can only happen with
democratic teachers in a
democratic classroom
atmosphere.

the ability to give up their
long- cherished ideas in place
of better ideas or opinions
coming from others
All teachers have their own
style of recitations. No one
styles can be identified as
the best style.

How to achieve good
classroom recitations?
1

It must be well- planned, purposive and interesting.
It should be definite about goals and purposes.

Recitations are enlivened and made interesting by use
of devices, explanations, illustrations, and use of lifelike situations and experiences.
It should involve as many of the students as possible.
Good recitations provide for individual differences

Good recitations should provide evaluation of learning
experiences.
If test are to be used for evaluation, be sure the test
items are properly constructed according to rules.
Tests should be valid, that is, they should test
definitely what they intent to measure.
An inexperienced college teacher
may wonder how he can prepare
a class for a successful recitation.

Here is a suggested procedure to
follow:
1

Determine the objective you are to accomplish. State it in
behavioral terms. Be sure your objectives are definite,
specific, and attainable for that particular lesson.

2

Choose the subject matter that will be used in the
accomplishment of your objectives.

3

Divide your class into manageable groups and have each
group elect a chairman.

4

Submit the subject matter to the class. Write the main topic
on the board, then ask the class to suggest subtopics for the
main topic.

5

6
7

8

Ask the leaders of the group to choose one subtopic for each
group.
Conduct a buzz session. Each group will decide what format
they will use in their group presentation. Give each group
time to plan their presentation.
The leaders of the group tell the class what they had
planned.
Let the group decide the date of presentation. Give ample time for
preparations. The group leaders can always come to you for
While waiting for the date of presentation, other lessons
can be undertaken. Other formats like individual reports,
lecture, and demonstrations can be done.

Recitations
should be
conducted
with the
spirit of

Each student
should see to

everything
that is said in
the
classroom.

Students
should
refrain
from
laughing at
the
mistakes of
other
students.

Recitation
should be

Activities
must be

Formats of
recitations should
be varied. No
matter how good
group discussions
are, the same
format can be

students to have
different types of
group
presentations.

Recitations
should be
