Project Examples:
• Converted Client A from Windows 2000-based member server architecture to Windows
Server 2003 Active Directory architecture. Installed 5 new workstations, re-purposing 4
more. Installed and configured Windows 2003 Server on Dell server platform hardware
with RAID array. Developed network backup strategy. Designed and installed multiple
access point WiFi network, with remote access capabilities provided by Linux-based
routing hardware. Installed and currently maintain virus-protection system for 15
machines on network, as well as Active Directory and Group Policy management.
• Provide Client B with desktop support of machines running mixture of Windows ’98, XP,
Vista and 7 operating systems in stand-alone configuration. Currently managing project to
refresh all workstation clients to Windows 7, with Windows Server 2008 backend, and a
Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP web server to handle reservations and credit card processing.
Project also entails the installation of wired network plant and configuration of WiFi
access points, as well as designing Active Directory schema and Group Policies, and
integrating a new POS system into network.
• Client C is a small financial services firm that had relegated IT support to one of the
managing partners. This partner’s departure from the firm prompted a technology review,
through which I repurposed hardware to replace a failing fileserver and developed
network backup services.
• Client D is a not-for-profit organization for which I provide desktop software support, WiFi
network design and configuration, as well as hardware platform power-tuning to extend
the productive lifespan of legacy computers.
• One-off clients that need hardware or software support to return computers to functional
operation and/or power-tuning machines to support additional workloads and extend
their usefulness.
2. Verizon Business (formerly MCI), Ashburn, VA
Senior Network Engineer, Enterprise Network Services 2000 – 2009
Primary responsibilities included network troubleshooting and design on an enterprise scale, management of
Cisco Access Control Lists to provide secure access for vendors and internal reps using Citrix desktops.
Telecommuting position, requiring some travel to perform hardware installations or disconnects.
• On one $24M project, ensured that all Access Control Lists were put in place to allow the reps to
traverse two Virtual Private Networks and take over network management and helpdesk
responsibilities for the client.
• Routinely got ACL changes implemented in 1 or 2 days, when the standard Service Level Agreement
turnaround time was 11 business days.
• Directly managed the conversion of 5 facilities from 3Com network gear to Cisco gear.
• Single-handedly disconnected and shipped network gear back to storage facility while
decommissioning 8 facilities.
Operations Lead, Outsource Operations 1998 – 2000
Acted as Operations Manager and Point-of-Contact for US-based outsource vendors to MCI, including APAC
Customer Services, Inc., PeopleSupport and Reese Teleservices. Telecommuting position, when not on site.
• Received Circle of Excellence award for providing 24x7 Operations support of 3 outsourced facilities.
• For several months, on location every other week.
• Developed the standard for reporting operational concerns to business management on a daily
basis.
• Spear-headed the implementation of VPN connectivity for telecommuting support personnel.
Network Administrator, MCI Wichita Telemarketing Center 1994 – 1998
Provided IT support to manager laptops, sales rep and supervisor desktops, administering an NT Domain
security infrastructure and the servers that provided it. Oversaw the growth of the network in the center from
an outdated, mainframe-centered system to a 465-seat client/server domain.
• Received a Destination Ovation award for managing the conversion of the Wichita Telemarketing
facility network from a two-segment Thin-Net implementation to a network consisting of 4 high-
density 3Com hubs and Cisco Catalyst switches with fiber-optic links between wiring closets.
• Developed the process by which the 450+ machines rolled-out in the conversion process were
received into local inventory, loaded with NT Workstation, and placed on the tabletop. This was
completed in one weekend.
